- 0:01Welcome to authentic living with Roxanne, a place where we have as conversations about
- 0:08things that really matter in our lives.
- 0:11And now here's your host, Roxanne Durgesh.
- 0:36Hi, everyone.
- 0:37It's, Roxanne Durges of Authentic Living with Roxanne.
- 0:39Today, I have a special guest that I've known for who are just discussing it before we got on
- 0:45about, 16 or 17 years ago.
- 0:47That's Mister Martin Buckland.
- 0:48Martin, thanks so much for coming on today.
- 0:51Oh, it's a pleasure.
- 0:52I'm very honored.
- 0:52Thank you very much for inviting me.
- 0:55So, Martin, years ago, when I was, getting in the corporate game, 16, 17 years ago, Martin
- 1:02was highly recommended back then, and my resume was done.
- 1:05And I I don't know if I've ever shared this with Martin, but, at the time that he did my
- 1:10resume, I got 3 or 4 offers within putting it out to the market, of which 1, global
- 1:17consultant consulting firm said you walk in, I'm gonna give you a $5000 bonus.
- 1:22You could pick it up and leave, because back then, the the, you know, the the the level of
- 1:27what Martin did along with the market that, I was in, which is health and wellness was
- 1:32really, quite high.
- 1:34So Martin, I've I've never told you that, but that's No.
- 1:37I'm astounded.
- 1:38Thank you.
- 1:38Yeah.
- 1:39My my heart's going now.
- 1:42And, you know, hence, you know, years years later, and I stayed with that, that company for
- 1:46a long time.
- 1:47So a bit about Martin's back background.
- 1:48He's a global executive curve management practitioner, and he works, his specialty is
- 1:55working with, resume writing and CB writing.
- 1:59He has clients in over 31 to 32 countries, just Internationally, works with people, and he's a
- 2:06you know, knowledgeable at central profound level on culture, and and one of his
- 2:11superpowers is, or should I say 2 is the ability to network and connect and 2 vitally,
- 2:18vitally important, things in this economy as we sit.
- 2:22So Martin, let's talk let's jump right into, what you're seeing out there as, as an
- 2:30executive coach with people, and we, we were talking a little bit about it, but I know
- 2:35everybody's bracing themselves now that we're into stage 3, you know, thinking the next 6
- 2:41months to, to a year, you don't really see the impact, the economic impact.
- 2:45What are you seeing now already in the last 4 to 5 months with people, executives and things
- 2:51like that.
- 2:52That's a very interesting question.
- 2:54So this is my 3rd, recession for work through and help people nurture and coach them through
- 3:00the career transition.
- 3:02This came all of a surprise.
- 3:03Just like the last recession with the mortgage meltdown, this came just like that many many
- 3:10people, doesn't matter where they are in the world's work, are totally unprepared.
- 3:15People don't manage their careers.
- 3:18And, my messaging and you follow me on various platforms of social media, is you manage your
- 3:25career and people, it came through like that.
- 3:29And then people were being laid off left, right, and center And I know from my network of
- 3:35economists and whatever, we haven't hit rock bottom yet.
- 3:37We got a long way to go.
- 3:38I think here in Canada where we are, right now, there's gonna be another million, people that
- 3:44loops in the next 2 or 3 months.
- 3:46And who knows what COVID 2 is gonna be bring So people need to manage their careers.
- 3:51Even in good times, they need to manage their careers because they can give more they get a
- 3:57career advancement faster and they get more money.
- 4:01They're more satisfied.
- 4:02More money means, earlier retirement or more investments.
- 4:07They can give more money to their investment adviser in March or April whenever they meet
- 4:11them.
- 4:12It has more satisfaction.
- 4:14So many people, as you know, Roxanne, I mean, you've worked with many executives.
- 4:18So many people are unhappy in their jobs.
- 4:21And, you know, today, we don't get the chance to move around a lot because we're very limited
- 4:27because there aren't too many jobs.
- 4:29It's now an employer's market over an employee's market, which it was prior to COVID.
- 4:36But, they can still move around.
- 4:38There's still jobs out there.
- 4:39But people have to be a detective like my old trade and, go and hunt those jobs down because
- 4:46here in Canada, Only 8% of jobs that are advertised.
- 4:51It's the lowest percentile of any country in the world.
- 4:54You go to the US.
- 4:55It's about 19.
- 4:56And then you go to, the UK and it hits about 26, 27, 28%.
- 5:02And then the further east you go across the world, And I've got clients all the way through
- 5:07to, Asia.
- 5:08The the higher that advertised jobs gets, but people need to get out there.
- 5:13You need to have their resume their CV up to date because I never know even in today's
- 5:19economy when it's pretty brutal.
- 5:21I must admit it's pretty brutal out there.
- 5:23People are really hurting.
- 5:25People are aching.
- 5:26People are screaming and asking why me?
- 5:30You could you can find jobs, but you always need to have your your resume, your CV out up
- 5:35to date.
- 5:35You know, I had one client this morning.
- 5:37We're only early in the morning.
- 5:39I need my resume by tomorrow for a job.
- 5:42Well, it doesn't happen that way.
- 5:45He said I've been following you on LinkedIn.
- 5:49All the time, and I've been watching your messages.
- 5:51And now I need a a a a resume.
- 5:53Well, I said, well, why didn't you activate it earlier on?
- 5:56I can't do that.
- 5:57I'll be doing you this justice as a professional resume writer.
- 6:02I can't dilute my service.
- 6:04So he said, okay.
- 6:06Yeah.
- 6:06So let's, I said, well, who's the name of the recruiter?
- 6:09I mean, I know that recruiter, and we've managed to extend it a little bit, but still,
- 6:14it's a very push, timeline for both us both.
- 6:20Because the resume is your marketing tool along along with, along with your your LinkedIn
- 6:27profile?
- 6:27And even now Facebook is becoming a huge search engine for talent hunting.
- 6:32So, yeah, it's pretty brutal out there, but people should manage their career in good times
- 6:39and in bad times.
- 6:41And they should be on LinkedIn.
- 6:43I mean, that's the if you're not on LinkedIn, my my phrase, it's pretty brutal.
- 6:47It's pretty tough is, if you're not on LinkedIn, you're committing career suicide.
- 6:52That's it.
- 6:53Yeah.
- 6:54Absolutely.
- 6:55And, you know, way back when I started to work with you, I I was new into the corporate kind
- 6:59of arena.
- 7:00I was, you know, into, big company in Toronto.
- 7:03And back then, it wasn't as much, but, like, when I got into my business, I was one of the
- 7:07first, pieces of, information, guidance I got by business coaches we need to get on LinkedIn.
- 7:13But even since it was the importance of making sure that the LinkedIn spoke to the pain points
- 7:19of the clients that I'm trying to attract.
- 7:21Right?
- 7:22It's not about me.
- 7:23It's not about me.
- 7:24It's about, they need to be the hero.
- 7:26I need to be the to offer the solution to their pain points.
- 7:30And my my LinkedIn needs to speak to that because ultimately, people are looking for
- 7:35they're looking for people like URI or anybody else all the time.
- 7:39And if your LinkedIn is just all about you and what you've achieved, It doesn't speak to them
- 7:45the same as if you're kind of trying to speak to them about what problems that you can, you
- 7:50can solve for them.
- 7:51Yeah.
- 7:52It's all about putting a personal branding.
- 7:54I mean, personal branding, I'm fascinated in.
- 7:56I hold some certifications in personal branding.
- 7:58Personal branding is your unique promise of value.
- 8:00What is so special about Roxanne?
- 8:03What is so special about Mark?
- 8:04What is so special about Ron or Mary?
- 8:07Everybody has their unique promise a value, but they don't know their value.
- 8:13And and people don't they they soul search, but they They need to dig deeper to find their
- 8:20value and their personal brand.
- 8:22It's their it's their competitive age because in good times and bad times, you're right now.
- 8:26You're in a in a job search or a career transition.
- 8:29You are, in a competition and you need to be number 1 in people's eyes.
- 8:33So you're a pro I tell people you're a product and you're sending that product to the market.
- 8:39So the package is your resume and your LinkedIn profile.
- 8:44It's not just use having a LinkedIn profile.
- 8:46You've got to be proactive on a LinkedIn profile.
- 8:50I call myself a self proclaimed LinkedIn junkie.
- 8:54I'm always, always on LinkedIn.
- 8:56And, I because I teach people how to use it, so I have to use it myself.
- 9:00And there's so much there.
- 9:02It looks like a pretty bland site that actually go behind the scenes and what you can do is
- 9:07amazing.
- 9:08So you need to share.
- 9:09You need to it gives you a platform to market yourself as an authority as well.
- 9:15And, an ex that and share articles from people like, us and and other people and, comment and
- 9:25then create articles as well.
- 9:27But don't have, I see something.
- 9:30Well, I've got a LinkedIn profile, but yeah, it's very basic.
- 9:33The further the deeper you go, the more you fill LinkedIn out, the more Google will get,
- 9:39you know, algorithms are constantly going over Google and, more people will be attracted to
- 9:46you.
- 9:46As we speak, executive recruiters and HR professionals are sourcing talent just like
- 9:52the, viewers of this, webcast, right now on LinkedIn.
- 9:58And if you haven't got a a fully complete LinkedIn profile.
- 10:02The chances of you being found are limited.
- 10:06So let's let's talk a little bit, and I know know, when we worked together years ago, I'm
- 10:10it's coming back to me now.
- 10:12You were able to look at me and what I've done so far in my career and from an aerial shops.
- 10:19You were able to almost link things thematically that I had done, you know, because
- 10:23you, you know, I remember the one word you kept saying Roxanne is transferable skills,
- 10:28transferable skills, like how what have you done?
- 10:31So with someone listening and, you know, or even executives that they think, oh, boy, I'm
- 10:35not so sure how this is gonna go in the next, you know, the ideal a client right now should
- 10:41be already thinking.
- 10:42Like you said, even before that, we should always have an updated CV.
- 10:46What kind of things should people be thinking if they're trying to make a pivot at this point
- 10:52in their prayer?
- 10:53That's a great question too.
- 10:54I mean, that's a that's a real long question, but I just wanna say something.
- 10:58I'm a great believer in the day you land your next job is the day you should start your next
- 11:03job search.
- 11:04Interesting.
- 11:05And that is very tough for people to engage to kind of get their mind around that.
- 11:11They they they find it, but, you know, what your career plays off as we all know, in your
- 11:19personal life as well.
- 11:21So if you're unhappy or you're in career transition, your spouse, your kids, and other
- 11:26people around you gonna feel your anger, your rage, and what is, what's going on in your own
- 11:33mind.
- 11:34So, yeah, but you you need to, come back original question you need to really focus on,
- 11:42exactly who you are.
- 11:44Do an assessment.
- 11:45There's various career skills or career assessments out there, but you can, you you can
- 11:53assess.
- 11:53I I'm not I'm not a I I I have associates who are, I can assess those, and then I can read
- 12:01and coach from them.
- 12:03But, you know, look at yourself and look at yourself and see who you are.
- 12:06Take the negatives and build on the negatives and build on the positives and learn exactly
- 12:12who you are inside and the value you can bring the big wide world out there.
- 12:18And that's so important, Martin, because I'll give you an example.
- 12:21When I, was in executive positions and it shifted where they wanted me to do microscopic
- 12:27It was like root canal daily for me.
- 12:29Yeah.
- 12:30Just because my that's my personality, and I used to always because of the not get get
- 12:36getting the proper guidance from the environment at that time, I would be like, you
- 12:39know, why can't I do this?
- 12:41It would take me three times as long to do something just because it wasn't it wasn't my
- 12:45thing.
- 12:46And I used to think, well, I have to get better at it.
- 12:48And what I recognized was, in fact, the company wasn't giving me the support that I needed to
- 12:53be able to do the job that they paid me for, which was higher level of strategy.
- 12:56Right.
- 12:56And so once I did one of those assessments, what allowed me to do say, okay, it's accepted.
- 13:02These are my gifts.
- 13:03These are not my gifts.
- 13:04Yes.
- 13:04Should I get a little bit better at them?
- 13:06Absolutely.
- 13:07But at the end of the day, I'm not gonna source out a job.
- 13:10That has microscopic elements to it that keeps me in an office somewhere in the back of the
- 13:15corporation.
- 13:15That would be that that mentally, I would be going stir crazy.
- 13:19So I think that knowing to your point, who am I?
- 13:22What are my gifts?
- 13:23And even what kind of things do I need to get better at, but it may not be my main skills is
- 13:28something that I learned kind of along the way.
- 13:31Yeah.
- 13:32Continuing and Tathan is very, very important.
- 13:34And as you know, I'm I'm considered the v global expert in executive master of business
- 13:39administration.
- 13:40I've worked with business schools across the world you don't have to do in the E MBA, even a
- 13:44short course.
- 13:45And today, you can just do them online.
- 13:47You can do from a university.
- 13:49You see We're here in Canada.
- 13:51You can see a a university in UK or the other side of the world in Australia.
- 13:57And there are so many courses And one thing a decision maker in your next career is looking
- 14:03at is your continue continuing education.
- 14:06So they're not looking at at finishing in 2011.
- 14:09So what have you done for education wise since 2011 to 2020?
- 14:15And now is the perfect time.
- 14:16There's some great offers, universities, colleges, and other institutions have
- 14:21discounted some of their courses and some of the courses are amazing.
- 14:25So, you know, digital transformation is the way of the world.
- 14:29Change management.
- 14:30So think about the way the world is is going.
- 14:33Who what skills do corporate world need now?
- 14:36They need digital transformation.
- 14:36They need change management.
- 14:42They need continuous improvement.
- 14:44They need anything to do with lean.
- 14:46So 6 Sigma, Kaixan, Kanban, Pokeyokey, Hoshinkan, so you're enhancing your skill set,
- 14:55not just for now, but for for later on as well.
- 14:58Because People look for red flags in resumes and CVs and LinkedIn.
- 15:04And, if you haven't been to college or university for 10 years, Please stop the
- 15:10question then.
- 15:12That's a good point.
- 15:13So just kinda looking at where you're at, looking at your industry, and potentially
- 15:17saying, what kind of things should I be demonstrating?
- 15:20Should I have to make a change?
- 15:22Even if I'm not ready to make a change, what kind of things would an employer be looking out
- 15:27for somebody with my skill sets, if I'm looking to say, let's say I'm trying to, go into
- 15:31organizations to, do corporate consulting around change management, I should be up up and
- 15:37ready with everything most recent in that arena so that I would even get to the top of the
- 15:42pile.
- 15:42And we we know how big those piles can be, Sure.
- 15:45Yeah.
- 15:45They can be huge.
- 15:46I'm sure.
- 15:47Like, I know when I would, you know, be involved in in hiring, sometimes the the piles
- 15:52with people with graduate degrees 20 years experience sometimes could be as much as 300,
- 15:57400, and how how and how do you how do you get vendors all really, really skilled people, how
- 16:03do you get them, you know, to the point where you get down into the last subset of being
- 16:08interviewed?
- 16:08It's it's a tough go.
- 16:10Yeah.
- 16:11And of course since I wrote your resume many years ago, the world of, resume processing has
- 16:17changed dramatically.
- 16:18It's now you're assessed by the ATS, the applicant tracking system.
- 16:24So it's not a human being initially.
- 16:26Generally, It's not the human being, screening your resume.
- 16:31It's the, the robot or the scanning machinery.
- 16:34So, you're on the board to have a mistake in it.
- 16:36It's a computer.
- 16:37And you can never be the computer.
- 16:39You can try and match it.
- 16:41So one, just one character wrong, one line wrong, one underline.
- 16:46You can't underline on the resume.
- 16:48You can't have shading.
- 16:49You can't all sorts of different things.
- 16:51Can count you out of an opportunity when you're the perfect candidate.
- 16:56Well, I did you know what?
- 16:57Obviously, I'm I I'm dating myself because I haven't done one in a while because I've been
- 17:02in my own business.
- 17:03But that's interesting to know.
- 17:05Mark and I, you and I started to talk a little bit about, the coaching that you've been doing
- 17:10through the pandemic.
- 17:10So I wanted to talk a little bit anybody that's in that space.
- 17:14So we're talking to people that still have jobs.
- 17:17Maybe they're concerned about their jobs.
- 17:18Absolutely.
- 17:19You need to reach out, sooner than later and get that CV where it needs to be.
- 17:24What about the individual, that's recently out of a job?
- 17:27I know you've been coaching a lot of people, what what are you seeing?
- 17:32And what are some of the trends of some of those things and some advice that you may be
- 17:37able to give executives?
- 17:38And, obviously, some of these executives, like you said, they, have high level positions.
- 17:45So getting those positions might be a little bit longer.
- 17:47Because of what's happening with the economy.
- 17:49What kind of tell tell us a little bit about, some of the executives that you've been,
- 17:54coaching?
- 17:55Well, I'm very lucky.
- 17:56I mean, I hold multiple certifications in coaching, executive coaching, career coaching,
- 18:00job search coaching, personal brand coaching.
- 18:02This goes on.
- 18:04And I enjoy coaching.
- 18:06However, this recession, people are being laid off all of a sudden.
- 18:13And they've been really, really distraught.
- 18:16And so it's tried me as a person, as a coach.
- 18:21And it's gone beyond the traditional coaching arrangement into a more, becoming a
- 18:27psychologist or psycho helping them more mentally cope with the situation they're in.
- 18:34And, so it's been for me as a very upbeat person.
- 18:39I'm a I'm an extrovert.
- 18:41It's very it's been very, very, trying for me, but there I'm trying to roll them around and
- 18:48using their skills and, whatever, to try and bring them around to to realize that they have
- 18:56a place to, place place in in corporate Canada, corporate UK, corporate US, or wherever.
- 19:03There is a place for everybody, even in a recession, but it's just getting their mindset,
- 19:09to into that that area.
- 19:11I didn't tell you in the original just before the precursor to our the the webcast is that I
- 19:17actually had somebody who threatened to commit suicide and they managed to divert him and go
- 19:23on another phone and call them the the the police here and they, they managed to The
- 19:30police officer who was at his house.
- 19:31I heard the bell while I was coaching this client, said he was a he had the the the the,
- 19:39ativan or whatever it was, in his hand, and he was going to do commit suicide.
- 19:43So it's it's a tough world.
- 19:46Tough for us all in the career business, managing people.
- 19:50I mean, I hear executive recruiters, and I want a job tomorrow.
- 19:53Well, it doesn't work like that.
- 19:55You know, executive distributors have their set clients and they have a process and, yeah,
- 20:00you're right.
- 20:00It takes It can take a job, C suite right now.
- 20:03It can take up to a year to find a job.
- 20:06You can get jobs fast.
- 20:08And intern management is huge right now.
- 20:11So, you know, you can get a job that we're on Thursday right now.
- 20:14You could get a job on Monday for a CFO or a CEO, injury management.
- 20:19And that's just an area, a special area of executive recruitment that's recruitment that's
- 20:24like growing.
- 20:25But yeah, it doesn't happen to everybody and it's you've gotta go when you're downsized, you
- 20:29have to create transition terminated canned or whatever you wanna call it.
- 20:33You've got to go through that emotion.
- 20:35You gotta clear that out the way.
- 20:37And, you know, discuss it with your friends, your family, maybe see people like you and
- 20:41there are many other people and then coaches like me to get all that emotion.
- 20:47It's okay to say, well, why me and I'm angry and outraged and whatever?
- 20:51That's human nature.
- 20:53But, you know, it's gonna happen a lot.
- 20:56The statistics are that, somebody graduating out of university and then I think the most
- 21:02recent statistics are here in Canada, the 2016, they're gonna be terminated six times in their
- 21:08career.
- 21:09So the transition, you gotta be prepared for it.
- 21:13And and we've and like you said, you've seen a couple of them, you know, these different
- 21:16economic downturns and we recover.
- 21:20Everybody recovers Yep.
- 21:22You know, I think of my time when I I got severed.
- 21:24So my job as a as an executive in health and wellness was to all always, you know, set up
- 21:31the times where companies would be downsizing, rightsizing, whatever.
- 21:35I at any given point in a normal economy, what was happening in my career is I was setting up
- 21:42these, you know, days where, you know, the casino would let let go 500 people, and I would
- 21:48be the one that would send them in.
- 21:50Well, Martin, when my time came, I was like, woah.
- 21:53So what happened is my company was downsizing My I'm telling you, and I you know, what I with
- 22:00my background, I walked in.
- 22:02I was told, it was a it was an acquisition that was pretty, you know, obvious acquisition, and
- 22:07I was part of the the original company.
- 22:10I was devastated.
- 22:12I was like, I've worked here and given, you know, everything I had for 10 years, I walk in.
- 22:18I think I'm having a performance evaluation.
- 22:20And guess what?
- 22:21It was my Nice to have you.
- 22:23Unfortunately, it's no longer a fit.
- 22:25And, you know, I was rocked that day.
- 22:28I walked out.
- 22:29They would not let me go back to my desk.
- 22:31No.
- 22:31Sure.
- 22:32And they took my laptop, and they took my I'm I'm gonna date myself my blackberry at that
- 22:37time.
- 22:38I had no I had nowhere to communicate.
- 22:40Because I was the only, device I had.
- 22:43And I was like, I think I have to buy a pay phone.
- 22:45Try to buy a pay phone in Toronto.
- 22:49That's funny.
- 22:50Yeah.
- 22:51Yeah.
- 22:51You know, and and then, of course, I got the whole, you know, I think it was Feldman Jackson
- 22:55back then.
- 22:55They gave me that and all that.
- 22:58And I struggled with what do I do?
- 23:00Now now I'm a, you know, mid career as an executive.
- 23:03What do I do?
- 23:04And and you're right.
- 23:05If you take that time, you get get angry, you get upset, and then you have to say, okay,
- 23:10where do I go from here, right?
- 23:11And, at which point I went off and I would start to consult and stuff, So it's a hard time
- 23:16having been through it myself because you think what did I do?
- 23:19First place you go is what did I do wrong?
- 23:21Yeah.
- 23:21Exactly.
- 23:21And then, you know, and then you realize it's, you know, it's business at the end of the day
- 23:25nothing to do about who I was and all those things.
- 23:28So it's, it's, I could see how some of the people that you're coaching or go through tough
- 23:31times It's so unfortunate.
- 23:34You know, but the reality to your point in the economists of saying this is that we're gonna
- 23:38see even more of it 6 months to a year from now.
- 23:40Yeah.
- 23:41Exactly.
- 23:41Yeah.
- 23:42You know?
- 23:43So so with, with this this space that we're in and the fact that we know more is coming, what
- 23:51guidance should are you should you for people listening with, for that
- 23:56are looking for transitioning or looking to think
- 23:57I may not have a job Again, what are some of the steps that they should take starting today,
- 24:04Martin?
- 24:05Well, they they they should be it's like the old boy scout's motto.
- 24:08Be prepared.
- 24:09So I I I would I would say we'll review exactly who you are.
- 24:13Get your resume up to date.
- 24:15Make sure it's that ATS friendly, the applicant tracking system because that's a very, very
- 24:21specific type of a resume and software.
- 24:24And we're in a performance driven world.
- 24:27So they they're looking for you to perform.
- 24:29They're looking for your hard skills.
- 24:30They're looking for your soft skills.
- 24:31They're looking for your personal brand in a resume.
- 24:34So get your resume up to date.
- 24:35Make sure your LinkedIn profile is up to date.
- 24:37Make sure you have your photograph on there.
- 24:39Make sure you've customized your LinkedIn URL because Google gives you a 400 percent uplift
- 24:45as soon as you take those numbers and letters out after your name.
- 24:49And then, you know, I'm more than happy.
- 24:51I'll be thrilled to arrive anybody with a free, no obligation resume critique.
- 24:56I say it as it is because you only get one kick of the can.
- 25:00And so I know when you're wandering out of that ATS and even though you may be applying for the
- 25:06job, you know, you you you might not land because, your resume is not the right format.
- 25:13So I'm not happy to to help people nurture and coach them through that.
- 25:16To always be prepared and have a career plan.
- 25:20You know, who are the companies you wanna go and work for?
- 25:23We all have companies we hold in higher steam.
- 25:26It may be because of the product, may be because of their service, may be because of
- 25:31their corporate culture, maybe their startup, and they may be going, I doubt it in this
- 25:36economy, but they may be going IPO to the market.
- 25:40Then you can benefit financially.
- 25:42Who are the companies you wanna go and work for?
- 25:44And, you know, think of the geographic region, look at the geography and go visit the if
- 25:49you're in career transition, this is a good tip.
- 25:52In Canada and the UK and to a certain degree depending on the state and the US.
- 25:57Everybody, all the municipalities or the regions have or States, counties in US, have,
- 26:05economic development commissioners.
- 26:07So they are the people who know of all the companies in their area and the companies that
- 26:13are coming to that area.
- 26:15So if a company is coming to your area, like you are in Niagara.
- 26:19I'm in Cinco County.
- 26:22They will know.
- 26:23And, you know, they're starting to fill up their human resources.
- 26:28So be very proactive.
- 26:31Don't just think either a job's gonna fall in your lap.
- 26:34I mean, I got people who I say, well, you know, you're in career transition.
- 26:38What are you doing for your career?
- 26:40Oh, I'm just 1 hour a day.
- 26:42That is a foolish thing.
- 26:43You need to treat this, career transition as a full time gig that I as a job subjects, but I
- 26:50tell my clients give more to, more hours to your job search because the long it's like
- 26:55anything.
- 26:56The more more you put into it, the more rewards will come your way.
- 26:59So you're not gonna get any rewards at 1 2, 3 or 4 hours or very limited.
- 27:03The more you put into it, the better it's gonna be and be very persistent and and be very
- 27:10prudent in the way you distribute your resumes is actually better to distribute 10 targeted
- 27:13resumes.
- 27:17Than it is to distribute 120 targeted resumes.
- 27:21And that's, you know, the benefits on my my skill set.
- 27:21I know how to to do, get route and navigate all, all those difficulties.
- 27:30There's lots of obstacles out there.
- 27:32I know how to eradicate those, obstacles.
- 27:34And I'm here.
- 27:35Help my clients.
- 27:36I nurture and I coach them through.
- 27:38I listen to them and, you know, you're not gonna get a job just like that.
- 27:41It's gonna take a long while.
- 27:42You're gonna have to deal with that.
- 27:44Anguish, why was I rejected for that particular job?
- 27:48Because not everybody can win.
- 27:50Right.
- 27:51So just be patient.
- 27:52So, Martin, I know, this has been valuable, and you and I probably could talk for a couple more
- 27:57hours.
- 27:58Oh, sure.
- 27:58What I I know there's, you have a book that you'd like to let people know about.
- 28:02So let them know where they can get a hold of it and where else they where they can reach
- 28:06you, if they're needing your services.
- 28:08Yeah.
- 28:08Sure.
- 28:09So, I have this book which was in the offering prior to the recession that, of course, I had
- 28:15to expedite it when the recession.
- 28:17So it's look after number 1, which is you.
- 28:21So you need to, look after yourself so there's tips and tricks for a recession proof for your
- 28:26career.
- 28:27So this is available on my, on my website, www dotaneliteresume.com.
- 28:35So ananeliteresume.com.
- 28:38That's my main website.
- 28:40I do have other websites, but you know, just Google me here.
- 28:43We should all Google everybody.
- 28:45And, you know, just a final tip here when you get an interview.
- 28:50Google the interviewer because you never know.
- 28:53They may have gone to the same school or they may have worked for the same employer.
- 28:57So there's instant synergy as a conversation point because, interview is a it's not a it's a
- 29:04two way street as well.
- 29:05It's a conversation.
- 29:06It's just to see whether you're a fit.
- 29:08And, you know, this other synergy, and I have to jump in there because this is another one
- 29:12that, shows you.
- 29:13So I met Martin 16, 17 years ago on a professional basis.
- 29:17We stayed connected.
- 29:18And he had kept talking about writing, chapter in the book.
- 29:22And we chatted.
- 29:23We didn't talk.
- 29:24You know, and then, you know, we kind of, you know, it came up, and I And then he said, oh,
- 29:281, I get invited to this book launch.
- 29:31I'm I'm in Niagara.
- 29:32It's it's a wine and cheese event.
- 29:35It's a colleague that I've just recently met, not connecting to the the dots.
- 29:40So 16, 17 years later, I'm walking in because of another colleague, who I work with,
- 29:46presently, who is supposedly writing this chapter in this book.
- 29:48And I in the back of mine, I'm thinking, is this what Martin said he was writing in?
- 29:52Didn't think about it.
- 29:54Walked in, and I I've never met Martin back then.
- 29:58It was that was about, 2, 3 years ago now.
- 30:00It was.
- 30:01Yeah.
- 30:01And then I said, oh my god.
- 30:02There's Martin Buckland.
- 30:03So it shows you that connection.
- 30:06So I met somebody else who had met somebody else that knew him, even though we hadn't met.
- 30:10So here we are at this vineyard, at this event such as this book launch that he had written a
- 30:15chapter in, 16, 17 years later with other people now that I've known that connected us.
- 30:21So it's it shows you again the value of those connections that you talked about there, are
- 30:26from the networking and connection and all those things.
- 30:29It's so, so very valuable.
- 30:30Yeah.
- 30:31You have to network these days.
- 30:32I mean, what is interesting is you know, the path system underneath the, Toronto buildings
- 30:37that in downtown.
- 30:39They they, I mean, I bet it's empty right now.
- 30:42It's probably very sad to be down there, but I used to host networking meetings down there and
- 30:47I used to go down there, before the networking meeting to site myself up for my presentation
- 30:51and whatever.
- 30:52And I'll virtually guarantee as I walk through those underground tunnels, I would meet four to
- 30:57five people I knew.
- 31:02Yeah.
- 31:04I mean, I mean, I
- 31:05I, yeah, I can't go anywhere.
- 31:07I mean, I've I've bumped into people I know in, this is really funny in San Francisco.
- 31:12I was checking into a hotel.
- 31:14There was this guy watching me from the other side, and I was, he's like, we'll see what you
- 31:18mean.
- 31:18So I go off.
- 31:19I got tried to go up my room.
- 31:20He said, tapped on my shoulder.
- 31:21He said, are you Martin Buckland?
- 31:23This was in San Francisco, and he said, I'm your client from London, UK.
- 31:29Amazing.
- 31:30Amazing on that note, connection and just, networking is is I think that's one of the the
- 31:36things that in this economy more than ever, you know, that's so very, very vitally important to
- 31:42invest that time.
- 31:43So, Martin, thanks again for, sharing all these fantastic information, with us, with anyone,
- 31:50that may be struggling around the element of resilience through this time I work with,
