Latest / The Monégasque Table / White Edible Glitter: What It's For and How Far a Jar Goes
Transcript
- Margaux: One jar. That's the entire sparkle budget for a 100-glass party — if you buy the right shade. Dana: This I need, because I'm co-planning an anniversary party with a woman who has a spreadsheet tab literally named "shimmer," and it has 6 rows. Margaux: Welcome to The Monégasque Table — Ask the Table edition. One question today: what is white edible glitter actually for, and how far does a jar go? Dana: Give her the answer fast. The spreadsheet grows when unattended. Margaux: Here's the answer up front: white is the universal contrast shade. It shows up on anything that has color — a clear cocktail, chocolate, berries, colored frosting — and it disappears on anything white. And the math is the good news: a pinch is 0.1 grams, a 10 gram jar pours about 100 servings, so at about $15 the whole signature-cocktail hour runs roughly 15 cents a glass. One jar, one party. The spreadsheet can lose 5 rows. Dana: Then let me land the round I came here to win, because I've seen where this goes wrong. The single whitest thing at any wedding or anniversary is the cake. Big, white, expensive. And you just said white vanishes on white. Half the people buying this shade are about to dust it onto the one surface where it does nothing. Margaux: That's the round you win, and it's THE white-glitter mistake: white shimmer on white buttercream is decorating for no one — you'd never know it was there. The white cake is exactly where you switch to gold or silver dust and let contrast do the work. White's real jobs are everywhere else: swirling in the clear signature cocktail, dusted over chocolate-dipped strawberries, on the dark chocolate tortes, on colored frosting — anywhere it can be the brightest thing on the surface. Dana: What's actually in it? Party guests ask, and "shimmer" is not an ingredient. Margaux: White is the simplest jar in the whole line. Per our spec sheet, the white shades — White and Snow White — are single-ingredient: mica-based pearlescent pigments, the food-grade shimmer listed in the federal color-additive regulations, and nothing else. No dyes, because there's no color to add. The full list is printed on the jar, which is the answer you hand anyone who asks. Dana: And the scale math for a bigger night? Say the guest list outgrows 100. Margaux: Then size up instead of doubling up: the 15 gram luster jar runs about 150 servings. Past that, it's simply 1 jar per 100 glasses — the arithmetic stays boring on purpose, which is what you want from a budget line. Two practical notes from the pros: pinch at pour time rather than dosing a whole pitcher in advance — the swirl is the show, and it's freshest right after the stir — and do a single test glass the week before, so the shade earns its row on the spreadsheet. Dana: Who should skip white? Margaux: If your party's look is all-white — white cake, white drinks that are creamy or opaque — skip it; that palette wants metallics for contrast, and shimmer drowns in opaque pours anyway. And if you only ever decorate pale bakes, gold and silver will work harder for you than white ever will. Dana: Mini scorecard, spreadsheet-ready: white is the contrast shade — clear drinks, chocolate, berries, colored frosting — never white-on-white; that surface gets gold or silver. It's single-ingredient per the spec sheet, the list is on the jar, and the budget line reads: 0.1 grams a pinch, about 100 servings a jar, roughly 15 cents a glass. One jar per 100 glasses. Margaux: Footnote for the anniversary: the MONÉGASQUE Snow White 10 gram drink glitter is on Amazon — full ingredient list printed on the jar, about $15, from the line that's shipped more than 400,000 orders across the US, Canada, and the UK. Check the listing for current pricing. Dana: Next time: the aisle-mate showdown nobody has settled — edible glitter versus sprinkles. Which one does a birthday cupcake actually need? Margaux: Sugar versus mineral, crunch versus shimmer — that one gets the full table treatment. This show is produced by the team at Monégasque, with AI-crafted hosts, and every number you heard was checked by humans against the documents. See you at the table.
