- 0:00Maybe we could deal with it together, maybe we can
- 0:02brainstorm together. Maybe we can hold each other
- 0:04through that together. That sounds nice,
- 0:20Hello, my love lies. God, I got to say, I'm going to
- 0:23be honest here. I'm feeling a little
- 0:27trepidatious and I'm a little shy.
- 0:29I'm a little shy this afternoon. But here we are and I want to
- 0:34share something a little vulnerable.
- 0:36I think you're probably getting used to that at this point.
- 0:38I've gotten a lot of feedback from a lot of people saying they
- 0:41really value my vulnerability and they thank me for it.
- 0:44So you're welcome. I don't know how to be any other
- 0:48way, so I'll just be this way. But I told somebody recently
- 0:54that I was scared of being too complicated.
- 0:58This was in a romantic context. And she paused a beat, quite a
- 1:04long beat. And then she said, if I thought
- 1:07you were too complicated, I would not be a good partner for
- 1:10you. And I've been thinking about
- 1:12that ever since she said it. And it's leading me to think
- 1:17about this concept of I will date when I'm more XYZ.
- 1:25And in my case, I will date when I'm less complicated, when I
- 1:30have things figured out. I mean, OK, the reality with me
- 1:34right now is that I'm in a big transition.
- 1:38And maybe I think that if I weren't in a transitional space,
- 1:42I would be easier to date. It would be less complicated.
- 1:46And maybe you've experienced some version of this, right?
- 1:49You will date when you lose the weight.
- 1:53You will date when you get the job.
- 1:57You will be ready to date when you move out of your parents
- 1:59place. You will be ready to date when
- 2:02the divorce is finalized, or when you heal more, or when you
- 2:07feel ready or complete. When you are more of a catch.
- 2:14When there is more of a reason for somebody to want to date
- 2:18you. This is pretty common, right?
- 2:21It sounds wise. It sounds like self improvement.
- 2:26It sounds like the right thing to do.
- 2:29Don't show up messy. Don't show up unprepared, don't
- 2:35show up half assed. And who wouldn't want to put
- 2:40their best foot forward? Who wouldn't want to put their
- 2:44most curated, confident, ready version of themselves out on the
- 2:51dating market? It doesn't even have to be
- 2:54dating, huh? It could be like, I'll ask for
- 2:56the promotion when I get these new skills.
- 2:59I'll launch the course. When I finish this whatever
- 3:04training, I'll start dating. Once I finish this course, once
- 3:08I listen to all 165 episodes of the Love Drive podcast, then
- 3:12I'll start dating. Which I actually think is really
- 3:14good advice, but I also think that you can do it while
- 3:19listening to all 165 episodes of the podcast.
- 3:23We've heard this before, right? Like put your best foot forward.
- 3:26Show up on dates the way you want others to show up.
- 3:30And you don't want some fucking messy person showing up on a
- 3:33date, you know, some unhealed, half assed version of somebody.
- 3:40The reality is that like most of us are, I mean, we're all
- 3:43unfinished until, until we're dead.
- 3:45It's funny this like this ideal, this idea is bringing me lots of
- 3:49joy. It's actually, it's just making
- 3:51me laugh of like the things that we put in place to protect us
- 3:59from being seen, because that's what this is.
- 4:03I'll date when I lose the weight because I don't want to be seen
- 4:07how I currently AM. I'll date when I get the job
- 4:10because I don't want to be seen as someone who doesn't have a
- 4:12job, or who's underemployed, or who lives at home, or who's
- 4:16still triggered by their downstairs neighbor, or who
- 4:20doesn't have it figured out, or who's not in transition.
- 4:23Because if you dated or you showed up or you opened up just
- 4:28the way you are right now, someone might see you in a place
- 4:32that you don't really want to be seen in a place that you're not
- 4:37super comfortable being. Speaking personally, I am in a
- 4:41lot of transition right now and it is very uncomfortable.
- 4:44I am relaunching this podcast and that is scary.
- 4:47I am moving back to a city that I know and I'm, and I'm having a
- 4:52lot of feelings about it, feelings of inadequacy, feelings
- 4:55of like failure. For some reason, a lot of them
- 4:58don't make sense. But I don't want to be seen in
- 5:01this vulnerable space. And so my version is, you know,
- 5:05when I'm not in transition, then I'll then I'll be open to
- 5:08falling in love. Or if I weren't so complicated,
- 5:12if I weren't so disorganized, if I didn't get triggered so
- 5:16easily, if I didn't struggle with conflict the way that I do
- 5:21currently. More on that some other time.
- 5:25The problem with this I'll date when XYZ happens is that the
- 5:31goal posts always moves. You will hit one condition and
- 5:36then the next one appears. You'll lose the 10 lbs and then
- 5:39something else will happen because things never stop
- 5:42happening. We're never our fully realized,
- 5:46fully fulfilled best self. We're always a work in progress.
- 5:50So there's always a reason or an excuse for why you won't put
- 5:53yourself out there. And I don't don't really want to
- 5:55make this all about dating because it can be really, really
- 5:58anything. I'll do this when this thing
- 6:01happens because it's not really about the weight, it's about the
- 6:06fear of being seen as you are. Unfinished work in progress,
- 6:11less perfect than you could be ready is usually code for
- 6:17something like small enough or perfect enough or good enough
- 6:23that no one could reject me. If I was less complicated, I
- 6:27wouldn't be scared of showing up in a really complicated way and
- 6:31so I wouldn't get rejected by this person for being so
- 6:34complicated. And the risk of me showing up
- 6:37just the way I am, super complicated, a little conflict
- 6:41adverse, a little unskilled in certain relational areas that I
- 6:45wouldn't get rejected for that I wouldn't be seen in this like
- 6:49half baked state, which is hard. I think it's hard.
- 6:54I think a lot of us struggle with being seen.
- 6:56I also want to say that there's, you know, there's an exception
- 6:59to this stuff, right? I think the line in the sand is
- 7:02probably like acute grief in crisis, not transition.
- 7:06I think there are times where maybe it's OK to not put
- 7:11yourself out there. It's OK to retreat and lick your
- 7:14wounds. It's OK to take time to heal,
- 7:17right? If you're in a raw grief from a
- 7:19death, if you're in a breakup that's still bleeding, if you're
- 7:24in a serious health crisis, active addiction recovery, your
- 7:29nervous system probably needs a little bit of grounding before
- 7:34it can safely be vulnerable with somebody new.
- 7:36So I don't think that's avoiding putting yourself out there.
- 7:40I think that's just wise. But things like, I just moved in
- 7:45between jobs, I'm in therapy, I live with roommates, my career
- 7:49isn't where I wanted to be. I'm broke.
- 7:51Those aren't reasons to wait, right?
- 7:54That's just life and half the people you know are in that same
- 7:58soup right now. You probably have more in common
- 8:01with others than you think. Also, what's nice is that, you
- 8:05know, a lot of these things, they, they change and some of
- 8:09these things heal in relationship, like my, you know,
- 8:13complex attachment system, my rusty conflict resolution
- 8:20skills. Those things can actually get
- 8:22better in a relationship. Your financial or career
- 8:27transition can be something that a new person can support you
- 8:32through within reason. You know, as long as you have
- 8:34other avenues of support, your weight loss journey, you know,
- 8:39this new person could be like, oh, hey, I play pickleball on
- 8:42Wednesdays and I go and I do a running club on Fridays.
- 8:44You're you're welcome to join me if that's something that would
- 8:46be interesting to you. I remember being in LA last year
- 8:50and I went for a physical and I told the doctor I wanted to lose
- 8:5310 lbs and he goes, everybody needs to or I said I need to
- 8:57lose 10 lbs and he goes, everybody needs to lose 10 lbs.
- 9:04I really like that. I thought that was cute Russian
- 9:06guy. The test isn't is anything hard
- 9:10right now that would prevent me from showing up.
- 9:12It's do I have the capacity to actually show up for someone or
- 9:17am I in a season where the honest answer is no because it's
- 9:22totally valid for it to be no, You are not in a place to show
- 9:27up for someone because that's what meeting people people is,
- 9:31right? People showing up for each
- 9:34other, taking turns cheering vulnerably, supporting each
- 9:38other, having fun, going on dates, going on adventures,
- 9:42deepening. If you honestly think that you
- 9:45don't have the capacity for that, that's OK.
- 9:49Most people are in that season. You know, the season of like, I
- 9:52really cannot show up for anybody.
- 9:55They just feel like they are because the the bar they've set
- 9:58is have everything together and no one has everything together.
- 10:04Some people look like they have everything together.
- 10:06And the problem is once you start comparing yourself to
- 10:09those people, well, you've heard me say it before, but what
- 10:11you're doing is you're comparing your insides, the way you feel
- 10:15on the inside to some of these outsides, the way somebody
- 10:18looks. We don't know what's going on
- 10:20with them really, you know, unless they're a close, close
- 10:23person to you. So this person, this new person
- 10:27didn't say, oh, Sean, you're not complicated.
- 10:31She said that complexity isn't really the disqualifier.
- 10:35Capacity is the disqualifier. If someone needs you simplified
- 10:42to love you, or if they need you smaller, richer, with a bigger
- 10:46apartment, less complicated, more healed, then maybe they're
- 10:51not the person to show up for you and to love you right now,
- 10:54just the way you are. Maybe they want to love a
- 10:57smaller version that won't hold up over a lifetime.
- 11:01The right person will see my complexity or your complexity or
- 11:06your current state as the thing that they're signing up for.
- 11:10Not something to manage, not something to live through.
- 11:15You don't get ready and then date.
- 11:19You date as you are. And that's how you find people
- 11:23who can actually hold you so you can start right now, you know,
- 11:27mess and all, unemployed, wishing your body were a
- 11:31different thing. By the way, everybody wishes
- 11:34their body was a different thing.
- 11:36Even people who are like objectively super fit are still
- 11:41impacted by today's unrealistic standards for beauty.
- 11:46You can have roommates, you can be in a complicated Co parenting
- 11:51dog situation with your ex. You could be launching a new
- 11:54podcast and really not sure where income is going to come
- 11:57from. You could be partially homeless
- 11:59in the Bay Area waiting for something to open up or develop.
- 12:04You could have a relationship that's complicated with your
- 12:06parents. You can be healing from
- 12:08childhood trauma. You can be living with mental
- 12:12health challenges, anxiety, depression.
- 12:16You can date in all of those states because everybody's doing
- 12:21that and everybody's got some version of that.
- 12:23Everybody's got something that they're not super proud of.
- 12:26And I will say that it is quite healing to share that with
- 12:28somebody and say, hey, you know what, this thing, let's super
- 12:31proud of it. And then they can go, oh, that I
- 12:34think that's cute. I don't think that's a problem.
- 12:37They might go, oh, that I have that.
- 12:39I have that too. Maybe we could deal with it
- 12:42together. Maybe we can brainstorm
- 12:44together. Maybe we can hold each other
- 12:46through that together. That sounds nice, right?
- 12:50But you can't, you can't, you can't get that unless you open
- 12:54up. You can't get that unless you
- 12:58boldly show others who you are. Slowly over time, of course, I'm
- 13:03not saying, you know, RIP the jumpsuit off on the first date,
- 13:08slow and steady wins the race. But, you know, slowly and
- 13:11steadily opening yourself up to somebody else who is hopefully
- 13:16also slowly and steadily opening themselves up to you.
- 13:19That sounds nice, right? And the truth is that I'm still
- 13:24figuring this thing out, and that's kind of the point.
- 13:28So I hope this pep talk was helpful.
- 13:30I don't have AQ and A today, but you're always welcome to leave
- 13:331-415-494-9559 The next episode, the next solo episode is sort of
- 13:43the flip side to this one. A listener wrote in about a guy
- 13:47she's been seeing. Great connection, real long term
- 13:50potential, but the sex feels awkward.
- 13:53Then he's clearly in his head. By the way, I can totally relate
- 13:56to this. He's just out of a 15 year
- 13:59relationship where intimacy never really deepened and she's
- 14:03wondering, is this workable? How long do I give it?
- 14:06How do I invite him into more without making him feel bad
- 14:09about where he is? And the question I really can't
- 14:12wait to answer is, can you actually teach an adult to be a
- 14:15better kisser? That's the next solo episode and
- 14:19next episode. I'm really excited.
- 14:21We are sitting down and talking to Debbie Barish, who is has a
- 14:25lot of letters at the end of her name.
- 14:29Let's see DNPMSWHNPBC OK, so sexual and reproductive health
- 14:34nurse practitioner and we are talking all about herpes, her
- 14:38journey, my journey, how to protect yourself, how to talk
- 14:40about it. This is like the definitive
- 14:43guide to herpes and probably other St. is I'm really, really
- 14:47pumped. Debbie is knowledgeable,
- 14:51authentic, kind of whip smart. She left a voicemail for the
- 14:56podcast and I reached out to her and I said, yo, I need more than
- 14:59a voicemail. I need a whole episode with you.
