- 0:00Hi, a.j. here with top employers, and I want to kind of
- 0:04give an overall perspective on the world of work Trends report
- 0:082022. The top employers put out I
- 0:11believe a couple days ago here. Now for those that don't know,
- 0:15actually need to make an official announcement.
- 0:18I've done it in a couple different ways, I think via
- 0:20LinkedIn, I may have loot, alluded to it via certain times
- 0:24certain podcast episodes, but I'm proud to announce that I
- 0:28have joined the top Employers in should Institute team, I will be
- 0:32helping form a partnership perspective from a sales
- 0:35perspective from a standing up the North America region
- 0:41perspective. I'm going to be helping drive
- 0:44home the importance of HR best practices inside of
- 0:48organizations, making sure that companies realize the importance
- 0:52of having those best practices, operationally baked into the
- 0:56company. And I believe in that the most
- 0:59and I think what I'm looking forward to is helping
- 1:04organizations, do two things either, raise their hand and say
- 1:08we have these best practices in place.
- 1:11We're doing these best practices.
- 1:13We're living Our Truth through and with these best practices
- 1:17and we deserve for the world to know about that.
- 1:21We deserve for our applicants to know about that, we deserve for
- 1:23our current employees. You know, about that, we
- 1:25deserved from an employer branding perspective, we deserve
- 1:27it from a potentially even Even on marketing and sales
- 1:31perspective. Like I think, what we're
- 1:32realizing is that having Having a company that is doing the
- 1:39right thing on behalf of the employees.
- 1:41And frankly, just doing the right thing period, from an HR
- 1:44perspective or an employee experience perspective from just
- 1:49like a from just, a experience perspective can really drive
- 1:53home. The bottom line can really Drive
- 1:55sales can really drive impact, right?
- 1:59I think, what a lot of organizations fail to realize
- 2:02and understand is that coffee. Dinner table lunch, you know,
- 2:09Friday night, happy hour conversations around.
- 2:12Hey how you been, what are you working on?
- 2:14What company are your at those things?
- 2:16Still exist? Even in a 2023 world is much.
- 2:20We at, as much as we are, in a digital world.
- 2:23As much as we are in a world where people are, maybe
- 2:26potentially, not seeing each other in person as much.
- 2:29Trust me, those things. Still exist.
- 2:32The colleagues that haven't seen each other in six months due to
- 2:36family. Obligations and the kids and
- 2:38busy schedules. Finally getting together for
- 2:40that brunch or that lunch. They're still checking up on
- 2:42each other. They're still saying, hey, how
- 2:44are you doing at your job? Oh, my job's miserable.
- 2:47Well, how have you been doing? Well, I'm at top employers
- 2:49Institute. This is how we do our culture
- 2:52here, and this is how we do this and that, or oh, I'm at Google.
- 2:55Oh, I'm at Amazon on that DHL, whatever it's going to be.
- 2:59There are still people that meet up in person and talk about
- 3:02their experiences at work and those experiences that were
- 3:06kindred I've those people that are talking to to apply for open
- 3:10roles those experiences and that overall macro awareness can
- 3:15drive people to buy more of their product.
- 3:17Because now, it's brand recognition now, it's maybe the
- 3:21ninth time that they thought about the brand and different
- 3:24ways, there's a lot there and so I think I think at the end of
- 3:28the day for for everyone involved to kind of get there
- 3:34ahead of wrapped around the importance of Of that is doing
- 3:38the right thing. Operationally not only drives a
- 3:40bigger bottom line that only drives more Revenue, not only
- 3:43can drive more sales. Not only can drive more
- 3:45awareness, not only can drive better talent to your
- 3:49organization, but it's the right thing to do.
- 3:52So, I'll get off my high horse here and actually, I'm getting a
- 3:57call from a colleague. Let me put a pause to this
- 4:00episode. I'm going to come right back and
- 4:02I'm going to give you my overall breakdown of the world of work
- 4:05Trends report. 20:22. Little break in the episode
- 4:17today. Sorry about that had to take a
- 4:18personal business call here. Let's hop back into the episode.
- 4:26All right, I'm back. So let's hop into these Trends
- 4:28quickly here. So, the very first trend is
- 4:30Unleash the Power of the involved employee.
- 4:32Now, employees need to be involved in a couple different
- 4:35areas of the business. Employees can be involved in,
- 4:37should be involved in organizational change.
- 4:40I've talked about this a scale and I'll continue to do.
- 4:42So if you were going to change anything change, process change,
- 4:46product change, roadmaps change, Focus change initiatives,
- 4:51change, whatever, you're going to change, you should bring.
- 4:56In those that are actually going to be carrying out and
- 4:58implementing the change and getting their feedback, getting
- 5:01their perspective, making sure the points of views they have
- 5:04around the change, the points of view around how to attack their
- 5:07change are heard and recognized. You have to do that for one
- 5:11simple reason. And one simple reason only if
- 5:13they are more engaged, if they feel more fulfilled and happy
- 5:17and heard and understood, I guarantee the outcome of their
- 5:21implementation of that, change will dramatically increase very
- 5:24simple. The second thing is you want to
- 5:27involve employees around town attraction.
- 5:30I've talked about this again at scale.
- 5:33When employees involved in Italian attraction phase it's
- 5:37one actually subtle way to do that.
- 5:39Treat them really really well. Make sure every single piece of
- 5:44the employee experience is built contextually around them.
- 5:48And so when they're having again, there are coffee chats
- 5:51there. They're happy our chats.
- 5:53When they're bumping into former colleagues that they haven't
- 5:56seen in six years hanging out with family.
- 5:59Those speak about the organization at a very, very
- 6:02high level that will inevitably create a macro pass of
- 6:07Attraction of talent perspective, and moment, that
- 6:10will be really good for the brand that I a lot of
- 6:12organizations are not taking seriously.
- 6:15Think the last one here is in involve employees around the D&E
- 6:19eye movement, as well as sustainability movement.
- 6:22Let's focus in the D EI moving for a second.
- 6:24If you are very clear and understood around what diversity
- 6:27means for the employee and really at an individual level,
- 6:31you putting your leaders of teams of eight in charge to
- 6:35understand how each and every person wants to wants to
- 6:39experience work experience there.
- 6:41All experienced this department and experience the organization
- 6:46and a very different and diverse way, if you can look at all that
- 6:49data and again have your managers of a team of eight go
- 6:53in and have those one-on-one conversations, take all that
- 6:55data, take all that insight and look across all the team that
- 6:58you have the city of 25 teams of eight inside of a larger
- 7:02company. And then you're looking at all
- 7:04that data. And you know, lots of Trends
- 7:06understand the trends because the trends and the data and the
- 7:09Insight around what to do from a DEA.
- 7:11Why perspective will be driven from your employees and not
- 7:14driven from the market will be driven from your employees and
- 7:18not driven from what you heard about.
- 7:20The other brand will be driven from your employees and not
- 7:23driven from Best Practices that maybe some of your leaders did
- 7:27at a different company that was at a different skill that I was
- 7:29at that that was at a different size.
- 7:31It had different complexities that had different people.
- 7:34If you're going to do something from a d EI perspective, you
- 7:37want to do it, you want to do it from the lens is really going to
- 7:41be contextually fitting for your people today.
- 7:46So just to wrap that up Trend. Number one is unleashing the
- 7:49power of your involved employee and getting her employee
- 7:52involved. Andy and I getting them involved
- 7:54in sustainability and well-being, getting them
- 7:56involved in the town and the town of traction process, and
- 8:00employer branding process, and then getting them involved in
- 8:03organizational change Trend. Number two, people agility
- 8:07through digital ability, this is something that's huge.
- 8:10The employee experience digital the employee experience, and
- 8:14looking at the technical I can be involved in that and
- 8:16obviously the the candidate digital experience.
- 8:20Anyone that's been listening to this podcast, you know, I
- 8:23believe in this a lot there's a lot that can be done around HR
- 8:26Tech. I think I had a podcast maybe 20
- 8:29or 30 episodes ago. Where I said in 2023, the HR
- 8:33Tech stack and the companies that have the best HR Tech stack
- 8:37is actually going to be the companies that dominate over the
- 8:40next 10 years. Each, our text acts, I mean
- 8:43they're they're they're the lifeline of your company
- 8:46companies that have the best ETS company of the had to have the
- 8:49best HR. Companies that have the best
- 8:52data to be able to read and understand and manage internal
- 8:56behaviors and skill sets and Alan d employer, branding talent
- 9:02I you know Alex position recruit.
- 9:05I mean the companies that have the best tech stack in those
- 9:09areas that really can impact someone's overall day-to-day
- 9:12from a workflow and experience perspective and someone's
- 9:16candidate experience coming into the organization.
- 9:19Those that can do, Do that those companies that can make?
- 9:22That happen is incredibly incredibly incredibly incredibly
- 9:25incredibly, amazing and important and impactful and
- 9:30those companies that are not focusing on that text, that I
- 9:33think are going to lose in a 10-year window.
- 9:35And so I would have to agree a trend here in 2022, 2023.
- 9:39Moving for the next frankly, 10 years, you want to make sure
- 9:42that's in place, you want to make sure that things are built
- 9:47in a way that is the most Progressive than most nuanced
- 9:50the most Well in the most impactful to give you the data
- 9:53that you need that so that you can Trend that data out and make
- 9:56really thoughtful decisions. The last Trend here, taming the
- 10:00wild west of work and they put a little few up, put a little
- 10:05subtitles here so they have working from home.
- 10:08Getting the balance right? Growth of the networked
- 10:12organization, potential fit, pitfalls, trust, and
- 10:15transparency in a remote World. I'll lock it on the remote work,
- 10:19the remote work. And work from home structure
- 10:21here. I'll keep it very simple.
- 10:24You have to trust your people and companies that are that hire
- 10:29companies that do two things on this companies, that hire
- 10:32leaders that naturally trust that naturally, give that setup,
- 10:38really good communication and Trust structures.
- 10:41In the beginning of a employee to manage a relationship, right?
- 10:46The, the leaders that do that best in the first two, to three
- 10:48weeks of getting to know their employees, in their Seems I
- 10:51think will bode well and have success long-term, right?
- 10:55I think my manager here at top employers does an amazing job.
- 10:59I think there are so many other managers that I've had in my
- 11:01life and I would like to think myself as a leader and a
- 11:03manager, I've done that. You have to if I have to get
- 11:07tangible and and really, really detail with this tip.
- 11:11If you are a manager and you have a team, I believe in the
- 11:15first three to six weeks, understanding how they work,
- 11:18understanding how they want to be communicated to.
- 11:20To understanding their workflow desires understanding how
- 11:25involved they want to be from a decision-making perspective.
- 11:28Just understanding everything about the way that they will
- 11:32experience and run their day-to-day and, and, and
- 11:35understanding their strengths and their weaknesses.
- 11:37So when you are putting objective tasks and and moments
- 11:42in their, in their, in their purview, and their focus, and
- 11:46making sure it's done in a way that, you know, they can Excel
- 11:48those variables, you know, they can crushing down.
- 11:50Those variables and you can blindly trust them to a certain
- 11:53degree. It's going to be the best idea
- 11:56and that's how you can build a lot of trust in the beginning
- 11:59stages. Now the transparency and Clarity
- 12:02part come from also setting up those structures sending up
- 12:05those one-on-one setting up those internal communication
- 12:08systems and processes that can have everyone inside the company
- 12:12and you directly with your employee on the same page.
- 12:15So making all decisions visible you as a leader showing and
- 12:20being Very transparent around how you're coming to decisions
- 12:23what processing information that you go through when making
- 12:26decisions that may impact that employee.
- 12:28So, trust and transparency. Definitely in every boat world's
- 12:32going to be a trend and I think it's going to be a staple of
- 12:35organizations for the next probably 50 to 100 years.
- 12:41I just, I just don't see the country, the world going
- 12:44backwards. I think we're always going to be
- 12:46in a hybrid World either. We're always going to be in a
- 12:48remote world and I think that's just something that is going to
- 12:51In place, moving forward. And then the last thing I'll say
- 12:55is working home and getting the balance, right?
- 12:58I think the companies that are going to do this, best of the
- 13:01companies that really figure out the nice balance that works for
- 13:05the team members. So I think not only having a
- 13:09policy in the standard at the org-wide but I've seen companies
- 13:13department-wide set up their own policies, set up their own
- 13:17structures, set up their own systems set up.
- 13:20Our own expectations where I've seen product and marketing teams
- 13:24going to the office one day a week, I've seen, I've seen I've
- 13:28seen sales teams and Partnerships teams going to the
- 13:30office three days a week. I've seen HR teams going to the
- 13:34office One Week, full full, five days off, two weeks.
- 13:38Go up. The point that I'm making is the
- 13:41leadership and the employees within their team, should have
- 13:44the right to make the decision, that's best for them, based off
- 13:48of the moments in each individual employee.
- 13:50Life based off of the deliverables on the that are on
- 13:54the, on the plate of the team at the moment based off of the
- 13:57focus of the team based off of the deliverables of the of the
- 14:00team, there's many different factors around.
- 14:04Making sure the remote structure is built in a way that behooves
- 14:08the inevitable outcomes of the team that the manager wants that
- 14:12the organization wants but is also in a way that is
- 14:14contractually beneficial of each and every employee that lives
- 14:19inside of that company. Do you want them to remain
- 14:21engaged? You want them to have the
- 14:23flexibility they need, but you also want them to be on task and
- 14:26get things done. And I think companies that find
- 14:30a way to get that balance, right?
- 14:32Are obviously going to win over the next 10 years.
- 14:34So, I just wanted to give my macro point of view on the world
- 14:39of work. Trends report here, are top
- 14:41employers Institute. My name is AJ, I'm excited to be
- 14:45a part of this company. I'm excited to be able to bring
- 14:47value and perspective and you'll be hearing a lot more.
- 14:50More from me soon, regarding top employers regarding my
- 14:53perspectives on these Trends and we'll talk soon.
- 14:57Thanks so much. Oh, and as always just a few
- 15:00thoughts, just a few perspectives.
- 15:03Yeah, we'll talk soon.
