- 0:00Speaker 1: What's going on?
- 0:00Speaker 2: Guys?
- 0:01Speaker 1: Welcome back to On Base Live and your Bleach Report.
- 0:04Speaker 1: I am your host, Mookie Vetts, And today we got
- 0:08Speaker 1: a eight time All Star.
- 0:11Speaker 2: You have to go to all that.
- 0:12Speaker 1: I know you don't like that. Eight time All Star,
- 0:15Speaker 1: twenty eighteen World Series Champion, twenty twenty four cy Young
- 0:19Speaker 1: Winner Chris Sale.
- 0:23Speaker 2: How you doing, brother, I'm good man, glad to be here.
- 0:26Speaker 1: Yeah, I know you had a tough time coming through
- 0:29Speaker 1: is hot hot Atlanta. You know what I'm saying, it's
- 0:31Speaker 1: it's starting to warm up.
- 0:32Speaker 3: I was on the West Coast for a week, so
- 0:34Speaker 3: I'm I'm not used to the commitdity yet. So coming
- 0:36Speaker 3: back it gotta good.
- 0:38Speaker 1: You gotta get back, Okay, all right? So bro, starting off,
- 0:42Speaker 1: we played this game called on base and off base, right,
- 0:45Speaker 1: and it's whether you're in or out. And so the
- 0:48Speaker 1: first one is more teams should collab with other pro
- 0:52Speaker 1: teams in their city. So the Hawks and the Braves
- 0:56Speaker 1: for the city connect jerseys. What do you think? So
- 1:01Speaker 1: the White Sox did it, which is your former team.
- 1:04Speaker 3: Yeah, so I'll be honest, I kind of like those jerseys.
- 1:07Speaker 3: I know there's it's you're very on it or you're
- 1:09Speaker 3: very off it. I kind of like it because I
- 1:12Speaker 3: think I think that teams should support each other, right,
- 1:16Speaker 3: and I think that if you know, you got more
- 1:21Speaker 3: of that, it kind of brings the sports together, I
- 1:23Speaker 3: think a little bit more so when I originally saw
- 1:26Speaker 3: the jerseys, I liked the jerseys. Now, whether or not
- 1:29Speaker 3: you think that that might look a certain way, I
- 1:32Speaker 3: don't know, but I think they look good.
- 1:34Speaker 1: I agree. I think it brings the cities together. I remember,
- 1:37Speaker 1: you know, obviously being in LA and the Lakers, and
- 1:40Speaker 1: then obviously Boston and the Celtics. When when you are
- 1:45Speaker 1: when you know those guys, it feels like, okay, you
- 1:49Speaker 1: know there's some guys that are like us that are
- 1:51Speaker 1: trying to bring out home to the city.
- 1:53Speaker 3: Yeah, and I think it again too. It's like the
- 1:56Speaker 3: camaraderie of like like pro sports, like when you when
- 1:59Speaker 3: we got guys that come out, like when guys were
- 2:02Speaker 3: cool you bring Yeah it is and you know they're
- 2:04Speaker 3: coming through the clubhouse and there's just like a mutual
- 2:07Speaker 3: respect from athlete to athlete because we don't really know
- 2:10Speaker 3: exactly what they're going through, but we kind of have
- 2:12Speaker 3: an idea based on like what we did so listen,
- 2:16Speaker 3: I'm in on.
- 2:16Speaker 2: That and on it.
- 2:17Speaker 1: Okay, So what about this? You could pitch a you
- 2:20Speaker 1: could pitch a game after having twelve express espressos.
- 2:25Speaker 2: Out out you know me, I don't need more.
- 2:29Speaker 1: So did you see Alvarado, Jose Alvarado, Yeah, he said
- 2:34Speaker 1: he drinks twelve express So I want to say it's twelve.
- 2:37Speaker 2: It's doing one hundred and five out there. Ay, man,
- 2:41Speaker 2: I I can't do it.
- 2:42Speaker 3: I need I need, I need less, like if I
- 2:47Speaker 3: can't get more riled up than I already get.
- 2:49Speaker 1: So do you you drink? Did you drink? How much
- 2:51Speaker 1: coffee do you drink a day?
- 2:53Speaker 2: I drink. I have like one cup in the morning
- 2:54Speaker 2: and I stop in the morning.
- 2:55Speaker 1: Do you have the Starbucks app?
- 2:58Speaker 2: No?
- 2:58Speaker 1: So you're not like a go on the road and
- 3:02Speaker 1: order it. Because Freddy like he needs his coffee in
- 3:04Speaker 1: the morning to get him going. And so I noticed
- 3:07Speaker 1: his routine is, you know, go and uh I see
- 3:11Speaker 1: a Starbucks coffee uh on the where the hosts are.
- 3:16Speaker 1: When you come in, I know that's Freddy's that's you know,
- 3:19Speaker 1: I know that's about to go up to Freddy's room.
- 3:21Speaker 3: So I'm not a coffee stop no, not not to
- 3:24Speaker 3: call him out like that, but like.
- 3:25Speaker 2: I can, I can go hotel coffee.
- 3:27Speaker 3: I just I just need something in the morning, on
- 3:30Speaker 3: the bus ride or on the way into the yard
- 3:32Speaker 3: or whatever. But no, I'm I'm I'm not fancy when
- 3:35Speaker 3: it comes to coffee. I am about some things, but
- 3:37Speaker 3: not Okay, we'll find out what those are.
- 3:40Speaker 2: What about.
- 3:42Speaker 1: What about this? You could score at least two points
- 3:45Speaker 1: if you played a full NBA game all day. I
- 3:48Speaker 1: got that two points?
- 3:49Speaker 2: I think.
- 3:50Speaker 1: So you you well, I mean you're six, and what
- 3:53Speaker 1: are you gonna get to the lane? How are you
- 3:54Speaker 1: going to get this buck? No?
- 3:55Speaker 3: They're bigger than me. I don't know if I'm driving,
- 3:58Speaker 3: if I'm getting to the right.
- 3:59Speaker 1: But you think you can knock down at three? I
- 4:01Speaker 1: mean I left he I think so, yeah, And not
- 4:04Speaker 1: to be racist, but I left the white dude this six,
- 4:07Speaker 1: he's got it. Look at this, Look at your jumper here.
- 4:10Speaker 2: Well, okay, so this maybe that was that was as
- 4:18Speaker 2: a joke.
- 4:19Speaker 3: Okay, okay, because okay, so if I remember correctly, he
- 4:25Speaker 3: got hurt. Yep, that's when he heard it. So they
- 4:27Speaker 3: sent me a jersey the like, hey, let's you know,
- 4:29Speaker 3: pick him up, you know, do something nice for him.
- 4:31Speaker 3: So that was basically like a I'm going to try
- 4:35Speaker 3: to take the worst possible shot so this guy comes back,
- 4:38Speaker 3: so I don't have to go play.
- 4:39Speaker 2: Okay, okay, but I actually I play well.
- 4:42Speaker 3: I used to play a lot of basketball in the
- 4:43Speaker 3: off season, and then once I started getting older.
- 4:46Speaker 1: I had to Yeah, the mouths, the miles put that.
- 4:49Speaker 3: On ice, but not my oldest son plays basketball. So
- 4:52Speaker 3: I'm out there with him a lot o nice. So
- 4:54Speaker 3: you say it's coming back, Yeah, it's coming back.
- 4:56Speaker 2: Not competitive, but well we'll mess around out there.
- 4:59Speaker 1: Okay, what about this, A hundred men would win against
- 5:06Speaker 1: one gorilla. Okay, you've seen this obviously.
- 5:10Speaker 3: We had very extensive conversation about this on the bus
- 5:15Speaker 3: two nights ago. So when we came in from Denver,
- 5:18Speaker 3: it was one hundred men versus gorilla, one hundred men
- 5:20Speaker 3: versus grizzly bear versus a lion shark in the water,
- 5:24Speaker 3: and we got we got into it. I think if
- 5:29Speaker 3: we got to hand pick the people, yes, but if
- 5:33Speaker 3: you just go pick like a hundred random people, I
- 5:35Speaker 3: think it's just a conveyor belt of just just nothing.
- 5:38Speaker 1: You don't think you don't think a hundred men could
- 5:40Speaker 1: like out smart one gorilla and it's to get him down.
- 5:44Speaker 3: Well, the way I was presented to me is like
- 5:46Speaker 3: we're in a room yep. So like if you're in
- 5:49Speaker 3: a room without anything, like it's just a.
- 5:51Speaker 1: It's okay, yeah, so you got to like beat this dude.
- 5:56Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 5:57Speaker 3: And I think if you if you took like a
- 6:00Speaker 3: hundred of the most skilled fighters on the planet, like
- 6:03Speaker 3: you go to the UFC, you get you get kabeeb,
- 6:05Speaker 3: you get you get all the all the big dogs
- 6:07Speaker 3: John Jones, and put them in a room. And then
- 6:11Speaker 3: I brought up the fact that Mike Tyson tried to
- 6:13Speaker 3: fight a gorilla, a gorilla that he gave he tried
- 6:16Speaker 3: to pay somebody because he saw one of them messing around,
- 6:18Speaker 3: I swear, And I was like, dude, Mike Tyson and
- 6:21Speaker 3: his probably might be able to go one on one.
- 6:22Speaker 1: But if Mike Tyson could do a one on.
- 6:24Speaker 2: One, that's what I'm saying.
- 6:27Speaker 3: I think if I think could yeah, I do, but
- 6:31Speaker 3: not any hundred people.
- 6:33Speaker 2: It would have to be specific.
- 6:35Speaker 1: And maybe I'm just like not thinking clearly, but I'm thinking, Okay,
- 6:40Speaker 1: one hundred men, we should be able to at least
- 6:42Speaker 1: put together some type of plan.
- 6:44Speaker 3: So I think the problem is you don't have one
- 6:47Speaker 3: hundred people's power fighting this thing at because you can
- 6:50Speaker 3: only have so many people on this thing at one time. See,
- 6:53Speaker 3: you're probably and this is I can't believe we're talking
- 6:55Speaker 3: about this this long, But dude, I'm telling when we
- 6:59Speaker 3: were on the bus other night, we were probably delirious too,
- 7:01Speaker 3: because it was late.
- 7:03Speaker 2: We were we were we were getting into this discussion.
- 7:06Speaker 1: So okay, So I think so I want to kind
- 7:09Speaker 1: of switch switch gears real quick. I want to uh
- 7:12Speaker 1: talk about a little bit about last year and you
- 7:14Speaker 1: you want to cy Young and how was it, How
- 7:18Speaker 1: was it going through the going through that year, Like
- 7:21Speaker 1: was there any failure at all? Did you or did
- 7:23Speaker 1: you just cruise all year?
- 7:25Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 7:25Speaker 1: Failure, but like you know, you know what I'm saying.
- 7:27Speaker 2: I hit a couple couple of rough patches. So where
- 7:31Speaker 2: do we start out?
- 7:32Speaker 3: We started out in Philly, then we went to Chicago,
- 7:34Speaker 3: came back Arizona.
- 7:35Speaker 2: I think it was my third start.
- 7:37Speaker 3: I went down to Miami and it was just like
- 7:39Speaker 3: kind of one of those weird day games where it was.
- 7:41Speaker 2: Like I gave up a bunch of runs, but I
- 7:43Speaker 2: still didn't.
- 7:44Speaker 3: Like pitch bats. I gave up five, but I went seven,
- 7:47Speaker 3: So it was like okay, okay, okay. It was just
- 7:49Speaker 3: like a couple of lapses, like a couple of weird innings,
- 7:51Speaker 3: walked a couple guys. So that was like the first
- 7:55Speaker 3: like misstep, and then I go through May and I
- 7:59Speaker 3: just kind of cruise through May.
- 8:00Speaker 1: I how were you cruising? Like? It was it like
- 8:03Speaker 1: do you just find a mechanic or something or what.
- 8:05Speaker 3: Yeah, it was just kind of like where when you're
- 8:07Speaker 3: on a baseball field, you're not thinking.
- 8:09Speaker 2: A whole lot. That's that's the sweet spot.
- 8:11Speaker 3: Right when you're just you're just doing what you do
- 8:14Speaker 3: because you know how to do it. When things are
- 8:16Speaker 3: off a little bit, you start tinkering and sometimes you
- 8:19Speaker 3: can overanalyze, you can over try to overperform and try
- 8:22Speaker 3: to get too much, and you actually take a step back.
- 8:26Speaker 3: And I think even before all that, like I had
- 8:28Speaker 3: a really good off season. Getting traded it was kind
- 8:32Speaker 3: of I've said this before, it was kind of a
- 8:34Speaker 3: breath of fresh air, kind of getting a clean slate.
- 8:37Speaker 3: You know, a lot of stuff had happened in Boston
- 8:39Speaker 3: with me so I think I think getting to Atlanta
- 8:42Speaker 3: being you know, being able to take that like kind
- 8:44Speaker 3: of kind of an exhale for the first time. And
- 8:47Speaker 3: then so so May comes, I have a really good May,
- 8:50Speaker 3: feeling good. I'm like, I get a win picture of
- 8:53Speaker 3: the month in May and I'm like.
- 8:55Speaker 2: All right, I might have it back.
- 8:59Speaker 1: It usually don't pay attention to stuff like this, like
- 9:01Speaker 1: you don't care, no, but if you know, if you
- 9:03Speaker 1: noticed it, that means you were pitching, like you felt
- 9:06Speaker 1: like you were doing that good.
- 9:08Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 9:08Speaker 3: And so it was just like start after start, I'm like,
- 9:11Speaker 3: you know, just kind of gaining gown, gaining ground.
- 9:14Speaker 2: My first start in June was against the A's.
- 9:18Speaker 1: Eight runs of course, yeah, and you know it was
- 9:24Speaker 1: one of those things and you know me like I
- 9:25Speaker 1: I after a game like that, I can get kind
- 9:28Speaker 1: of hot. Oh yeah yeah.
- 9:30Speaker 3: And I just remember after that start, it was just
- 9:33Speaker 3: like a very humbling feeling and it was like, all right, man,
- 9:36Speaker 3: like just take this one off the chin and get
- 9:39Speaker 3: back to it. I remember Ozuma, man, he came up
- 9:41Speaker 3: to me. He's like, hey, that happens, don't worry about it.
- 9:44Speaker 3: You'll get right back to it. And then after that
- 9:47Speaker 3: it was just the hardest part was just kind of
- 9:50Speaker 3: maintaining my schedule and not again like the putting those
- 9:56Speaker 3: blinders on, not paying attention to like the outside noise,
- 9:58Speaker 3: because you know, you get to a and point in
- 10:00Speaker 3: the year and people are starting to talk about things.
- 10:02Speaker 3: Oh yeah, of course things are coming up. And even
- 10:05Speaker 3: in interviews, you know, your postgame interviews, people are bringing
- 10:08Speaker 3: stuff up and you're like, man, I wish you would
- 10:10Speaker 3: just shut up good.
- 10:12Speaker 1: I mean, it's it's inevitable, like there's no way to
- 10:15Speaker 1: there's no way to do well or do bad and
- 10:18Speaker 1: it not come to you, you.
- 10:20Speaker 3: Know, and you look at you look at like Judge
- 10:22Speaker 3: right now, and you know, I'm doing exactly what I
- 10:25Speaker 3: say I don't want to do. But like how many
- 10:28Speaker 3: times does he face that every day? The numbers and
- 10:32Speaker 3: like can he do it? And all this stuff, and
- 10:33Speaker 3: so it's like you just try to block that stuff
- 10:36Speaker 3: out as much as possible.
- 10:38Speaker 1: And so tell me a little bit because I'm thinking
- 10:41Speaker 1: cy Young winners, MVP winners, you know, the greatest right
- 10:46Speaker 1: especially in the season or whatever, typically do like a
- 10:51Speaker 1: lot of work, Like there's a lot of work behind
- 10:53Speaker 1: the scenes, and not that you don't do a lot
- 10:55Speaker 1: of work. But when it comes to like game planning,
- 10:57Speaker 1: watching film, X, Y and Z, that's not that may
- 11:00Speaker 1: not what I from what I know, that's not necessarily
- 11:03Speaker 1: like a cup of tea of yours. No, Like you
- 11:06Speaker 1: may watch and understand and I think, I think you
- 11:08Speaker 1: watched the game. You know, I watched the game as
- 11:11Speaker 1: it unfolds, and I've known that you've been doing that
- 11:13Speaker 1: since you were in college? So why why is that?
- 11:16Speaker 1: How is that even possible?
- 11:18Speaker 3: The simplest form is, I've never called a pitch of
- 11:21Speaker 3: my own. So like when I'm in high school, my
- 11:23Speaker 3: high school coach is calling pictures, right, Oh, okay, you
- 11:26Speaker 3: get to college, and like if you shake off your
- 11:29Speaker 3: college coach, the coach is college pitch. Yeah, I'd still
- 11:32Speaker 3: be running if I shook him off, right, Like you're
- 11:34Speaker 3: you're in trouble, right, Like that is just like a
- 11:36Speaker 3: no no. And then I get drafted. I'm a first rounder.
- 11:40Speaker 3: I show up to Pro ball, and like, you don't
- 11:42Speaker 3: want to you don't want to like assert yourself too much,
- 11:45Speaker 3: especially as a first rounder when you knew and all
- 11:46Speaker 3: this stuff, and so I was just kind.
- 11:49Speaker 2: Of went with the flow.
- 11:50Speaker 3: And then like I got to the big leagues really quick,
- 11:53Speaker 3: and my first catcher was a J. Perzinski, So I'm like,
- 11:55Speaker 3: can't shake him off, right, Nope. So I mean I
- 11:58Speaker 3: had gone from the time that I had ever first
- 12:00Speaker 3: started pitching to all the way to a major league
- 12:04Speaker 3: mound and never shook off a pitch, not that I
- 12:07Speaker 3: not that I know of anyways. And it's weird because
- 12:09Speaker 3: I'll sit in the dugout and I'll watch you know,
- 12:12Speaker 3: Holmes pitch or I'm watching you know whoever it is
- 12:15Speaker 3: out there on the mound, and I'll call pitches for them.
- 12:18Speaker 3: I'm watching the game. I'm like, Okay, go here right now.
- 12:21Speaker 3: And so it's like I feel like I have the
- 12:23Speaker 3: ability to do.
- 12:24Speaker 2: It, but.
- 12:25Speaker 1: You don't want to. You don't want to like exercise
- 12:28Speaker 1: that though. You don't want to say, hey, like how
- 12:30Speaker 1: many times has it happened to where like he's called
- 12:34Speaker 1: slider or whatever and you have disagreed with it, but
- 12:37Speaker 1: through it anyway.
- 12:39Speaker 3: I don't know if there's ever a time I've disagreed
- 12:41Speaker 3: with a pitch, because I like, for me, no matter
- 12:43Speaker 3: what he calls, in my mind, I just I just
- 12:47Speaker 3: hit a gear where I'm like, hell, yeah, okay, I'm
- 12:49Speaker 3: stuffing this thing. Okay, like okay, two seamer in heater up,
- 12:53Speaker 3: change up away, no matter what it is in any
- 12:56Speaker 3: count I just go basically hammered down, just throw the
- 13:00Speaker 3: best pitch you can.
- 13:01Speaker 2: So and another thing too.
- 13:05Speaker 3: When I was young, we would go to these pitchers meetings,
- 13:07Speaker 3: right and I was when I first came up.
- 13:09Speaker 2: I was in the bullpen.
- 13:10Speaker 3: So it's like you're you're you're in the bullpen group
- 13:12Speaker 3: and you're just going over hitters, and I mean, I'm
- 13:15Speaker 3: just sitting around just like I'm just looking around.
- 13:18Speaker 2: I'm not.
- 13:18Speaker 3: It was tough for me to like pay attention to that.
- 13:21Speaker 3: So then when I became a starter, Don Cooper was
- 13:24Speaker 3: my pitching coach and we would have these it was
- 13:28Speaker 3: me Flowers or me and AJ and Coop and we
- 13:32Speaker 3: it was before the game, and he would he we'd
- 13:34Speaker 3: be going through hitters, and I think he noticed me
- 13:36Speaker 3: just kind of I'm over here.
- 13:39Speaker 2: So we did that.
- 13:40Speaker 3: I forget how many times we did that, but he
- 13:41Speaker 3: finally came up to me, was like, hey, man, just
- 13:43Speaker 3: just don't come anymore. Like I'll take care of it
- 13:45Speaker 3: with the catcher. You just get prepared. And I was
- 13:48Speaker 3: like perfect. I remember another time I went to the
- 13:52Speaker 3: video room to go watch hitters, right and I was
- 13:55Speaker 3: down there for probably forty five minutes. Was Cleveland. I
- 13:57Speaker 3: was getting ready for to face Cleveland, and I remember
- 14:01Speaker 3: just watching all this video and saying like okay, like
- 14:04Speaker 3: this was the setup pitch.
- 14:05Speaker 1: And I walked out of.
- 14:06Speaker 3: That room and I remembered nothing. You know, I'm like,
- 14:09Speaker 3: all right, like let's just get back to the norm.
- 14:12Speaker 3: Let's just like, for me, the most important thing about
- 14:15Speaker 3: this game is competing. If you go out there and
- 14:18Speaker 3: you put yourself out there, and you put it on
- 14:19Speaker 3: the line, and you leave everything out there, more times
- 14:22Speaker 3: than not you'll be successful.
- 14:25Speaker 1: And so I wholeheartedly agree with that. But I do
- 14:29Speaker 1: have another question. So if because you see so many
- 14:32Speaker 1: guys shake and it's like Okay, the catcher suggests this
- 14:37Speaker 1: pitch and they shake because they are fully convinced in
- 14:42Speaker 1: this other pitch, does that come from the flow of
- 14:47Speaker 1: the game or some work that they maybe remember watching
- 14:50Speaker 1: video or something like what does that come from?
- 14:53Speaker 3: So I think that's more like scattering report, Like all
- 14:55Speaker 3: those guys it's like okay, this guy, And it's like
- 14:59Speaker 3: percentages game too, because sometimes you get into one one
- 15:01Speaker 3: counts and this guy's going to throw a fastball seventy
- 15:04Speaker 3: two percent of the time or whatever it is, right,
- 15:06Speaker 3: so it's like, okay, look out for this. And sometimes
- 15:10Speaker 3: guys just have holes, and like, especially when you're in
- 15:13Speaker 3: a when you're in a jam, you just kind of
- 15:15Speaker 3: hammer that, you know, or if you have like an
- 15:18Speaker 3: unbelievable pitch, like you have just a really good strength
- 15:21Speaker 3: and it's a weakness of his, you just hammer that
- 15:24Speaker 3: until you know he gets out or.
- 15:25Speaker 2: You walk them.
- 15:26Speaker 1: Yeahah, okay. So and I do want to ask this
- 15:30Speaker 1: question because you want to say young last year and
- 15:36Speaker 1: this year, like what was your thought? How how did
- 15:40Speaker 1: you feel coming into the year, because I remember when
- 15:43Speaker 1: I won MVP in eighteen and coming into nineteen because
- 15:48Speaker 1: it was like, Okay, you've done it, You've played, You've
- 15:51Speaker 1: played great, you had a great season, X, Y and Z.
- 15:55Speaker 1: It was almost like I put my new stand. This
- 15:59Speaker 1: is like a new standard for me, Like I raised
- 16:02Speaker 1: the bar for myself, and I remember like not living
- 16:08Speaker 1: up to that bar, especially early. I'm like, man, I gotta,
- 16:12Speaker 1: I gotta, I gotta get back. I gotta get back.
- 16:15Speaker 1: And it was like it I think it made it
- 16:17Speaker 1: tougher for me because I put that expectation on myself.
- 16:21Speaker 1: Obviously on the outside there was expectations as well, and
- 16:24Speaker 1: so I remember going through that season like I was,
- 16:28Speaker 1: I had this this unreal thing instead of just being
- 16:32Speaker 1: who I was before I got there because I didn't
- 16:34Speaker 1: have that expectation. And so now you create that expectation
- 16:37Speaker 1: in some way, form or fashion, and it gets hard.
- 16:40Speaker 1: And so I want to hear you like your perspective.
- 16:41Speaker 3: When it when when when you do something like that,
- 16:44Speaker 3: Like I remember that season you had. I mean that
- 16:46Speaker 3: was it was ridiculous. So like, but like, who are
- 16:50Speaker 3: we as athletes or who we as even people? To
- 16:53Speaker 3: where our baseline now is just being the best?
- 16:55Speaker 2: Right? Like what? What?
- 16:57Speaker 3: Like that's an unbelievable spot to be in. And that's
- 17:00Speaker 3: that's where I would encourage people to want to be.
- 17:03Speaker 3: Like you always want to be like when you show
- 17:05Speaker 3: up on a daily basis, you want to be the
- 17:07Speaker 3: best version of yourself, and that's what we do every day.
- 17:11Speaker 3: But what I've noticed is it takes a little bit
- 17:14Speaker 3: of the fun away from the game when you put
- 17:17Speaker 3: that kind of pressure on yourself. And I mean my
- 17:21Speaker 3: first month of the season, I've I've been very below average, and.
- 17:24Speaker 1: You said it, you said you just hate sucking, and
- 17:26Speaker 1: so yeah, that's why I wanted to hear.
- 17:29Speaker 3: So it's it's it's something where this game is a
- 17:32Speaker 3: fine line of being very intense but loose at the
- 17:35Speaker 3: same time if that even makes sense, right, Like you
- 17:38Speaker 3: have to be locked in. You can't be aloof you
- 17:41Speaker 3: can't not be focused on like what you're doing. But
- 17:45Speaker 3: you have to have a sense of like trust in
- 17:47Speaker 3: yourself and the ability that you bring to the table.
- 17:49Speaker 1: So it's like can be hyper focused on.
- 17:51Speaker 3: Yeah, because again, when when you try too hard, that's
- 17:54Speaker 3: when you cut. Sometimes you take a step back, and
- 17:56Speaker 3: it's like you have to you have to be able
- 17:59Speaker 3: to still have fun playing this game. And when it
- 18:02Speaker 3: turns into like, man, I have to do this, I
- 18:04Speaker 3: have to do this like that sometimes you trip and
- 18:07Speaker 3: fall and you're not focusing on the right things.
- 18:09Speaker 1: It gets hard, man, it get it gets It gets
- 18:11Speaker 1: so hard. And so what did you do or what
- 18:14Speaker 1: thoughts have you had really to uh to kind of
- 18:18Speaker 1: keep you not in that same space that I was
- 18:20Speaker 1: talking about as far as not putting that hot extra
- 18:23Speaker 1: high expectation on yourself.
- 18:25Speaker 3: So I just focus on like my in between days,
- 18:27Speaker 3: because I know my start day, like I have to
- 18:29Speaker 3: be the way I am and I have to.
- 18:31Speaker 1: But you're pretty loose on start day though. Before the game, Yeah, yeah,
- 18:34Speaker 1: you're pretty normal.
- 18:35Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 18:35Speaker 3: I would say before the game, about about an hour
- 18:40Speaker 3: before the game is when I start getting kind of
- 18:41Speaker 3: focused on my routine and stuff like that. But even then,
- 18:44Speaker 3: like if you came up and asked me, it was like, hey,
- 18:46Speaker 3: do you want blah blah blah, or like what do
- 18:48Speaker 3: you think about this? Like I still have conversations. It's
- 18:50Speaker 3: not like one of those people that like you can't
- 18:52Speaker 3: talk to.
- 18:55Speaker 2: I don't. I don't know how they do that.
- 18:56Speaker 1: I don't know either.
- 18:57Speaker 3: I would be sleep in the third inning if I
- 18:59Speaker 3: lock done at two o'clock in the afternoon. So I
- 19:05Speaker 3: think I just focused on on the in between stuff,
- 19:07Speaker 3: having more fun at the field. There were a couple
- 19:11Speaker 3: of things I had to do mechanically that I wasn't doing.
- 19:13Speaker 3: My armslot was a little lower, some of the things
- 19:15Speaker 3: with my lower body that I wasn't like. There are
- 19:17Speaker 3: certain cues that I have to hit to get to
- 19:20Speaker 3: the end result, and a couple of things early were
- 19:22Speaker 3: just kind of kind of unwinding me before I got
- 19:26Speaker 3: to letting it rip. But I just focused on having
- 19:30Speaker 3: fun on my in between days, like no matter like
- 19:33Speaker 3: if I'm pitching good, if I'm pitching bad, like I
- 19:35Speaker 3: have to be the same guy and I still want
- 19:36Speaker 3: to have fun doing this. I don't want to show
- 19:38Speaker 3: up to the park every dawn, major League baseball player.
- 19:41Speaker 3: This should not be miserable. This should not be like
- 19:45Speaker 3: you know, like so it's like, okay, take the expectations away,
- 19:49Speaker 3: focus on your work, focus on being a good teammate,
- 19:52Speaker 3: and have fun, try to have a good time out there.
- 19:53Speaker 3: And I think that's that's kind of loosened it a
- 19:56Speaker 3: little bit to get back to being successful.
- 19:59Speaker 1: Nice, nice, And of course you're back to doing what
- 20:02Speaker 1: you always do. Okay, so let's go. Let's go back,
- 20:05Speaker 1: because I haven't gotten to talk a whole lot about
- 20:10Speaker 1: twenty eighteen and like that year, that's something that I
- 20:16Speaker 1: feel like we can talk forever about. I remember going
- 20:20Speaker 1: into spring training and like, you know, we're pretty good,
- 20:24Speaker 1: but you know whatever, Cora Core had just gotten there
- 20:28Speaker 1: and he come he came in and it was awesome,
- 20:32Speaker 1: you know, but you know, I didn't really know anything,
- 20:36Speaker 1: and I'm sure you know he would. There wasn't much
- 20:39Speaker 1: really to think about. And then we started playing spring
- 20:42Speaker 1: training and I think we like we won a lot
- 20:46Speaker 1: of games in the spring. We won a lot of games,
- 20:48Speaker 1: and we had just a really good team. And then
- 20:50Speaker 1: we started off that season. Well, I think we started
- 20:53Speaker 1: off that season in Tampa. In Tampa.
- 20:55Speaker 3: That's like one of that is like the one thing
- 20:57Speaker 3: I think of that, Like, the very first game of
- 21:00Speaker 3: that season didn't go our way?
- 21:02Speaker 1: Did it not? At all?
- 21:03Speaker 2: We are ohero and.
- 21:04Speaker 3: One we are we are three hours into this season
- 21:07Speaker 3: and people are dropping el losing from the mine. Oh yeah,
- 21:13Speaker 3: because I remember that because after we won, they had
- 21:17Speaker 3: like okay, like read these mean tweets after game one
- 21:19Speaker 3: of the season and people were letting it.
- 21:21Speaker 1: Rep that that was but that that was the beauty
- 21:24Speaker 1: of Boston because it kind of kept you, you know,
- 21:29Speaker 1: it kept you accountable at all times. And so then
- 21:33Speaker 1: we ended up going I think we won like twenty games.
- 21:36Speaker 1: We went like twenty and four, twenty and five or
- 21:38Speaker 1: something like that, and I just remember showing up to
- 21:42Speaker 1: the park and every day it was like we're gonna win.
- 21:46Speaker 2: Yeah, that was the expectation every day.
- 21:49Speaker 1: And I remember seeing I remember a stretch did you
- 21:54Speaker 1: get did you get three hundred strikeouts that year?
- 21:56Speaker 2: That was in seventeen.
- 21:59Speaker 1: I remember a stretch when it was just like every
- 22:04Speaker 1: day we just came and we beat the brakes off
- 22:07Speaker 1: of them, and we went home every day, and Kora
- 22:10Speaker 1: had it to where like we were just hanging out.
- 22:12Speaker 1: I don't know if you remember hanging out in the
- 22:14Speaker 1: clubhouse and all these other things. And and we get
- 22:19Speaker 1: go through, get through playoffs, get to playoffs, right, we're
- 22:22Speaker 1: just steamrolling, steamroling and that going through that playoffs. And
- 22:29Speaker 1: not that anything's ever easy, nothing's ever easy in this game,
- 22:34Speaker 1: but relative to this game, that was one of the
- 22:39Speaker 1: smoothest easiest playoffs I have ever been a part of.
- 22:43Speaker 1: As far as like.
- 22:44Speaker 3: So easy is a tough word to use them Yeah, yeah,
- 22:47Speaker 3: I get what you're trying to say, Like it there
- 22:49Speaker 3: was there was really no panic, no at all. And
- 22:53Speaker 3: the playoffs are very pressure. Oh yeah, I mean it's
- 22:56Speaker 3: a tense environment. And I think I think there's the
- 23:00Speaker 3: way a c ran that team, you know, like there
- 23:03Speaker 3: there were a couple of points throughout the year where.
- 23:08Speaker 2: Like you look up and you're like, man, we're we're
- 23:10Speaker 2: the nastiest team in the league right.
- 23:12Speaker 3: Now, like like that, Like we're like we're looking down
- 23:15Speaker 3: at second place, like by a distance, and it like
- 23:17Speaker 3: just I remember, like to your point, we showed up
- 23:21Speaker 3: every day and we're like it didn't matter who was pitching,
- 23:24Speaker 3: didn't matter who we were playing.
- 23:25Speaker 2: Like, we got we got you leading off, we.
- 23:28Speaker 3: Got JD bringing the heat, we got young Raffiew Devers, Bogue.
- 23:31Speaker 3: I mean it was just name after name after that.
- 23:33Speaker 3: That lineup was relentless. Our starting rotation held it down,
- 23:38Speaker 3: and our bullpen had we had fuel out there, and
- 23:42Speaker 3: but I think just in the way Ac kind of
- 23:45Speaker 3: handled it and to our credit, we put ourselves in
- 23:48Speaker 3: a very good position as a team. But as kind
- 23:52Speaker 3: of the captain of the ship, you got to kind
- 23:53Speaker 3: of know when to you know, how to navigate that,
- 23:57Speaker 3: and he was able to kind of rest our starters
- 24:00Speaker 3: and give some of our everyday guys a blow here
- 24:03Speaker 3: and there down the stretch. Uh, you know, you get
- 24:06Speaker 3: to August September, it's it's a grind and it gets rough. Yeah,
- 24:09Speaker 3: and like it's rough the fact where you can kind
- 24:11Speaker 3: of ease off the gas but still be in the
- 24:14Speaker 3: lead and know like stay focused.
- 24:18Speaker 2: Man. That was that was, that was.
- 24:22Speaker 1: It was unbelievable. Then we get to the World Series
- 24:25Speaker 1: and then I remember because towards the end we had
- 24:30Speaker 1: gotten thinned down in the bullpen. I remember, I think
- 24:32Speaker 1: somebody gotten hurt or something. I don't remember. I don't
- 24:35Speaker 1: remember exactly what happened, but I remember seeing in the
- 24:40Speaker 1: World Series you come out and in the ninth inning
- 24:45Speaker 1: and I'm like, first of all, when I saw you
- 24:49Speaker 1: go down there warming up, I'm like, if he if
- 24:51Speaker 1: he touches this ball, the game is over, you know,
- 24:54Speaker 1: because I mean, like the game look at that. I
- 24:56Speaker 1: remember seeing you come out and I'm like, we want
- 25:00Speaker 1: it's over with. There's nothing they can do about it,
- 25:02Speaker 1: because I played ping pong with you, and I know
- 25:06Speaker 1: when you smell blood, it's over with. And so that
- 25:10Speaker 1: time I remember, I just remember all I mean standing
- 25:14Speaker 1: in right field and I mean you just took it
- 25:18Speaker 1: over by yourself. You're like, guys, we could have sat
- 25:20Speaker 1: Indian style and everything would have been everything would have
- 25:24Speaker 1: been just fine. And uh, I remember after that that
- 25:29Speaker 1: moment was like wow, that was that was a beautiful thing.
- 25:38Speaker 1: But like that was like the most stress free baseball
- 25:43Speaker 1: I played. And maybe because obviously yes it was very stressful, right,
- 25:49Speaker 1: but like with the team and the camaraderie was like, man,
- 25:53Speaker 1: we had fun even in that moment. I remember you
- 25:56Speaker 1: yelling at us, take me through that. Remember you, you screamed,
- 26:00Speaker 1: So I do remember that.
- 26:02Speaker 3: So and and to further the point too, is even
- 26:06Speaker 3: our even our front office was locked in because you
- 26:08Speaker 3: look at the guys we brought in. They they had
- 26:12Speaker 3: their hands all over that, all over the second half
- 26:15Speaker 3: push that we made. And you know, Nate, Nate had
- 26:18Speaker 3: one of the most legendary outings in postseason history was
- 26:21Speaker 3: the m v P and he he was up there.
- 26:25Speaker 2: Swinging a freaking boat or so.
- 26:30Speaker 3: I remember in Game three, right, we we had played
- 26:34Speaker 3: that marathon game.
- 26:35Speaker 2: What was it sixteen innings?
- 26:37Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, sixteen something crazy, and I just remember we
- 26:41Speaker 3: we lost that game. And again, just to point out
- 26:47Speaker 3: chorus feel, I remember coming in that clubhouse. I mean
- 26:50Speaker 3: we were there for five outs and we walk in.
- 26:53Speaker 3: I mean that was that was a tough, tough loss
- 26:57Speaker 3: to a really good team in the World Series on
- 26:59Speaker 3: the road. I mean, we put we had we had
- 27:04Speaker 3: spent every bullet. I remember asking Ac after every extra
- 27:07Speaker 3: inning game like when am I going to the bullpen?
- 27:09Speaker 2: When am I going to the bullpen?
- 27:10Speaker 3: He's like, we need you for tomorrow, Like we have to,
- 27:12Speaker 3: we have to, we have to keep something. I can
- 27:16Speaker 3: keep asking, like it was every inning, like when am
- 27:18Speaker 3: I going out there?
- 27:19Speaker 2: When do you need me out there? You just kind
- 27:20Speaker 2: of kept like, hey, keep keep it down.
- 27:24Speaker 3: But I remember coming in after that, and I remember
- 27:27Speaker 3: just being so like hot after that game, and AC
- 27:31Speaker 3: had that meeting with the with the whole squad and
- 27:33Speaker 3: and basically was like, hey, what what just happened was unbelievable.
- 27:37Speaker 3: And I know we weren't on the right side of it,
- 27:39Speaker 3: but I remember like we left that game almost feeling
- 27:42Speaker 3: like we didn't even lose that. It was like a
- 27:46Speaker 3: sense of like all right, like we just lost the game. Whatever,
- 27:49Speaker 3: let's show up tomorrow. Well when we showed up tomorrow
- 27:51Speaker 3: off like that. The next day game four, Brian Johnson
- 27:56Speaker 3: actually came up to me and was like, dude, we're
- 27:59Speaker 3: flat right now. This is this is a freaking World
- 28:02Speaker 3: Series and we're flat.
- 28:03Speaker 2: He's like, I.
- 28:05Speaker 3: Feel like someone someone's to say something like something we
- 28:08Speaker 3: had he wasn't going to get something going. Yeah, So
- 28:13Speaker 3: I remember we were down in the tunnel, and I
- 28:16Speaker 3: forget exactly like what moment it happened where I was like, okay,
- 28:21Speaker 3: like the two wires in my brain touched, the spark
- 28:24Speaker 3: went and I'm.
- 28:24Speaker 2: Like and I just lose it.
- 28:26Speaker 3: And it was basically just along the lines of like, hey,
- 28:29Speaker 3: let's let's pick it up, like, let's let's be who
- 28:33Speaker 3: we are. This is not where we're playing flat right now.
- 28:36Speaker 3: And you know, there's some more maybe character words behind it,
- 28:42Speaker 3: but it was basically like, hey, let's this is not
- 28:45Speaker 3: who we are. We're playing flat, this is not what
- 28:48Speaker 3: we've done the whole year, the whole playoffs, or even
- 28:50Speaker 3: in these first few World Series games, like pick it up,
- 28:54Speaker 3: let's let's be the team we are.
- 28:55Speaker 1: And did did It was just you and BJ. You
- 28:58Speaker 1: didn't run this by anybody else.
- 29:00Speaker 3: Not that I remember. I remember him. He came up
- 29:03Speaker 3: to me like earlier in the game, and then it
- 29:07Speaker 3: was another time and we just kind of like we're
- 29:09Speaker 3: like looking back at each other, and I was finally
- 29:11Speaker 3: like all right, man, like this is is going down.
- 29:13Speaker 2: It is going down.
- 29:14Speaker 1: I remember, and I remember when you started yelling because
- 29:17Speaker 1: I think rich Hill was pitching.
- 29:18Speaker 2: He was just shoving.
- 29:21Speaker 1: And I remember when you started yelling, I'm like, why
- 29:27Speaker 1: is he yelling? If he's yelling, something's really going on
- 29:31Speaker 1: because you never did that. You know, you're always chill,
- 29:34Speaker 1: You're always chill. And I was like, man, well, yeah, exactly,
- 29:42Speaker 1: you weren't yelling for nothing. And I just remember we
- 29:47Speaker 1: and we did. And I don't know that I can't
- 29:49Speaker 1: say it was all because of that, but you know,
- 29:51Speaker 1: I think it did get us going, like, damn, you know,
- 29:54Speaker 1: this is the World Series. I think we were just
- 29:56Speaker 1: so used to just cruising that it was going to
- 29:58Speaker 1: happen that you know, we needed a little, a little
- 30:01Speaker 1: you know, smack in the face for a second to
- 30:04Speaker 1: wake up.
- 30:04Speaker 2: Well.
- 30:05Speaker 3: And sometimes there's there's a there's there's a couple of
- 30:09Speaker 3: different avenues of how you can deliver information to people.
- 30:12Speaker 3: And sometimes it's like hey man, like what do you got,
- 30:15Speaker 3: Like what's going on? And it's like it's a conversation
- 30:18Speaker 3: between two people, and sometimes you need someone to come
- 30:20Speaker 3: up to you and just kind of like you know,
- 30:22Speaker 3: grab you by the shirt and say hey man, like
- 30:24Speaker 3: let's go, let's let's go, and like different people respond
- 30:27Speaker 3: to different things, uh differently obviously, but I just felt
- 30:31Speaker 3: like in that moment, it was like, okay, like everybody
- 30:34Speaker 3: in this clubhouse knows who I am and knows what
- 30:37Speaker 3: I how I operate, And I wouldn't do this if
- 30:40Speaker 3: I didn't feel like it was necessary, because I that
- 30:42Speaker 3: was That's probably the first time I've ever yelled in
- 30:44Speaker 3: a dugout like at my teammates, not you know, at
- 30:48Speaker 3: myself or about a situation. But yeah, I mean what
- 30:53Speaker 3: happened after that was obviously pretty special. Beautiful was a
- 30:57Speaker 3: beautiful thing as Mitch as Mitch's boss yet I don't know.
- 31:01Speaker 1: But that was that Homer was, So I want to
- 31:06Speaker 1: go back to a young you a little bit because
- 31:08Speaker 1: I know people know somewhat about your upcoming up bringing.
- 31:12Speaker 1: Should I say, so, where are you from?
- 31:15Speaker 2: Lakeland?
- 31:16Speaker 1: Lakeland, Florida, Lakeland, Florida and fishing? Did you grow up fishing?
- 31:22Speaker 1: How are you from Florida? And don't fish? Like? How's that?
- 31:26Speaker 3: Because when I was a kid, all I ever wanted
- 31:29Speaker 3: to do is play sports, And I remember going fishing
- 31:32Speaker 3: as a kid, and just is all we're doing?
- 31:36Speaker 2: Like I was not?
- 31:37Speaker 1: That was it?
- 31:38Speaker 2: I was down. I was not down with like the
- 31:40Speaker 2: relaxing part, like for fishing.
- 31:42Speaker 3: It's more of like, oh you're it's very leisurely. I
- 31:45Speaker 3: was not leisurely when I was a kid, all sports
- 31:48Speaker 3: all day. It was either on a bike, playing basketball, soccer, baseball.
- 31:53Speaker 1: What did you play football? I mean just I'm tiny too,
- 31:57Speaker 1: but I put on some pads.
- 31:59Speaker 3: No, I was so I was always really really skinny
- 32:02Speaker 3: as a kid. So I got snapped in half.
- 32:05Speaker 2: On a football field. So, especially in.
- 32:07Speaker 3: Florida, you got to understand like Florida and where I
- 32:09Speaker 3: went to high school, like we were we were nasty,
- 32:12Speaker 3: and so it was like all right, I'll show up,
- 32:15Speaker 3: but I'm not going.
- 32:15Speaker 1: To play so baseball and basketball.
- 32:18Speaker 3: Uh So it was mostly baseball and soccer as a kid.
- 32:21Speaker 3: I never played basketball like in a league or anything. Yeah, no,
- 32:28Speaker 3: never organized. And then I played golf growing up a
- 32:30Speaker 3: little bit. But then like once I got to high school,
- 32:32Speaker 3: it was it was literally all baseball.
- 32:34Speaker 1: Why did you you didn't want to do anything else
- 32:37Speaker 1: or that was.
- 32:38Speaker 3: No, So baseball again, like I've played baseball since before
- 32:41Speaker 3: I can remember, like I don't even have my first
- 32:44Speaker 3: memory of baseball because it was I was three, four
- 32:47Speaker 3: or five years old, whatever it was, and I just
- 32:49Speaker 3: I loved the game. Like I'm telling you, I would.
- 32:52Speaker 3: I would come home from games and go in my
- 32:54Speaker 3: backyard and play. I would wake up in the morning
- 32:56Speaker 3: and play before school as soon as my dad. My
- 32:59Speaker 3: dad would walked through the door and I would be
- 33:01Speaker 3: standing there at the garage with his glove and my
- 33:04Speaker 3: glove and we were out in the backyard.
- 33:06Speaker 2: I mean it was. It was NonStop.
- 33:08Speaker 3: When my friends came over, we were playing in the
- 33:10Speaker 3: backyard with souvenir bats and tennis balls hand I mean
- 33:15Speaker 3: it was. It was literally twenty four to seven.
- 33:17Speaker 1: So you got to high school, and were you good
- 33:22Speaker 1: in high school? I mean, I mean obviously relative.
- 33:26Speaker 2: Right, Yeah, I mean I was.
- 33:27Speaker 3: I was good enough, But I was I was I
- 33:30Speaker 3: guess you could say more of like a late bloomer
- 33:32Speaker 3: when it came to like figuring out like how this
- 33:34Speaker 3: whole thing worked, because I played JV for two years
- 33:37Speaker 3: and then I was on varsity for a couple of
- 33:39Speaker 3: years and was still probably not even the best player
- 33:41Speaker 3: on my team.
- 33:42Speaker 1: And you hit in high school, are we? Yeah? Okay,
- 33:44Speaker 1: so were you a good hitter?
- 33:45Speaker 2: I was all right?
- 33:46Speaker 1: You're all right, yeah, And did you when you went
- 33:48Speaker 1: to Guy recruited what schools? Did you get recruited by?
- 33:52Speaker 2: Gulf Coast?
- 33:52Speaker 1: That was the only one that was it?
- 33:53Speaker 2: That was the only Division I school that I know
- 33:55Speaker 2: of that recruited me.
- 33:57Speaker 1: And you went there? And how was it? I know,
- 34:01Speaker 1: I don't know if I ever asked, how was it?
- 34:02Speaker 1: Having spring training right in like your your backyard quote
- 34:06Speaker 1: unquote your backguard.
- 34:07Speaker 2: It was the best. I basically made two moves.
- 34:10Speaker 3: So when I was in Chicago I still live down
- 34:13Speaker 3: in Fort Myers Naples area. When I was with Chicago,
- 34:16Speaker 3: and it was like we're moving from here to Arizona
- 34:19Speaker 3: to Chicago. So like it was just like this big
- 34:21Speaker 3: triangle of moving stuff. Like when I got to Boston,
- 34:24Speaker 3: it was like I get to stay at my house
- 34:25Speaker 3: for two extra months, and I have two moves. It's
- 34:28Speaker 3: from here to here and from here back to here.
- 34:31Speaker 3: So it worked out. It worked out perfectly.
- 34:33Speaker 1: And so how often did you, knowing that we were
- 34:37Speaker 1: in Fort Myers, how often did you go over to
- 34:42Speaker 1: the college to to like watch games or.
- 34:45Speaker 3: Just actually I mean we had a couple of you know,
- 34:48Speaker 3: outings over there. We went Watston basketball games. I keep
- 34:51Speaker 3: in touch with the with our with the head because
- 34:53Speaker 3: the head coach that's there now is the only one
- 34:55Speaker 3: that's ever been there.
- 34:57Speaker 2: Oh wow. Yeah, Dave Tillet's been there since day.
- 35:00Speaker 1: So that means he's like he's a legit coach. Like
- 35:03Speaker 1: for a coach to stay for somewhere that long, you
- 35:06Speaker 1: have to be a really really good coach.
- 35:07Speaker 3: Well, and every time he went to the next level,
- 35:11Speaker 3: he got better. Like our first two years. So the
- 35:14Speaker 3: first year that I went there was our first year
- 35:16Speaker 3: of Division one. Okay, so the as a D two
- 35:18Speaker 3: school before I got there. My freshman year, we were
- 35:21Speaker 3: Division one and we stame rolled.
- 35:24Speaker 2: I mean we wow.
- 35:25Speaker 3: I mean we went like twenty eight and five or
- 35:27Speaker 3: something like that in conference. I mean it was it
- 35:30Speaker 3: was a smaller conference, but yeah, no, he was. That
- 35:34Speaker 3: guy's getting a statue somewhere around that university when he's done.
- 35:39Speaker 1: So I will I'll tell you a story a little
- 35:42Speaker 1: bit about FGC. So I obviously I was with Boston,
- 35:47Speaker 1: you know, the whole beginning of my career. So I
- 35:49Speaker 1: was in Fort Myers. I watched Fort Myers and obviously
- 35:53Speaker 1: you you as well, but you remember when nothing was
- 35:55Speaker 1: around there.
- 35:56Speaker 2: Yeah. Oh yeah, old Coach Town Center wasn't even like
- 35:59Speaker 2: all the way built out.
- 36:00Speaker 1: Yeah, when I first it wasn't like it was on
- 36:02Speaker 1: a couple of restaurants like and now it's a whole
- 36:05Speaker 1: new city. But I remember going over the FGCU man
- 36:09Speaker 1: and you know, I was nineteen twenty eighteen, nineteen twenty,
- 36:15Speaker 1: going over there and hoping all the time out.
- 36:18Speaker 2: On the outdoor courts by the tennis courts.
- 36:20Speaker 1: Yeah, outdoor courts by the tennis courts, hoping all the time,
- 36:24Speaker 1: and after after spring training games or whatever, I will
- 36:28Speaker 1: go over there and play, and we ended up going.
- 36:30Speaker 1: We ended up making it inside. We hoped so much
- 36:32Speaker 1: that we got in contact with one of the guys,
- 36:35Speaker 1: one of the players or whatever. We ended up hooping
- 36:36Speaker 1: in in the gym and everything.
- 36:38Speaker 2: So or did they have the auxiliary?
- 36:40Speaker 1: We both Okay, I felt like I went to FGC.
- 36:45Speaker 2: Well you're moving bed, so I'm sure you can pull
- 36:47Speaker 2: some strings.
- 36:48Speaker 1: So but yeah, then I remember going to a game
- 36:51Speaker 1: over there, and so FGCU that was a It seemed
- 36:55Speaker 1: like if you went to that school, you loved it,
- 36:58Speaker 1: you really loved you know what I'm saying. And so
- 37:01Speaker 1: obviously you did and you, I know you've told the
- 37:04Speaker 1: story a million times. But uh, for the people that
- 37:07Speaker 1: don't know, de Graham went to a school similar to yours.
- 37:11Speaker 3: Right, he went to Stetson, so we were in the
- 37:13Speaker 3: same we were in the same conference, same.
- 37:15Speaker 1: Conference, so same conference. And he was he de Grom
- 37:18Speaker 1: then or not not yet?
- 37:20Speaker 3: No, so not that I remember. I don't remember that,
- 37:23Speaker 3: you know, I'll say this about de Grom.
- 37:25Speaker 2: Yeah, there it is.
- 37:26Speaker 3: I think that was his only high school or only
- 37:28Speaker 3: college home or two. And he went bro when I
- 37:31Speaker 3: tell you he went way back. I hope they show
- 37:34Speaker 3: where this ball lands. So that's a road that's that
- 37:37Speaker 3: was that Lipscomb Oh yeah, yeah, yeah, that's okay. I
- 37:41Speaker 3: mean that ball. I mean he absolutely knew that ball. So,
- 37:45Speaker 3: I mean he was playing short then, right, yes, And
- 37:50Speaker 3: I don't remember him pitching like he I mean obviously
- 37:54Speaker 3: like he's pitching now. I'll say that, pound for pound,
- 37:56Speaker 3: that might be the baddest dude I've ever seen on
- 37:57Speaker 3: the mountain, like pure stuff. I mean, it's it's pretty incredible.
- 38:03Speaker 1: But I mean you're you're pretty up there too, though. Yeah,
- 38:06Speaker 1: but you're pretty up there. I don't know, man, especially
- 38:09Speaker 1: when you like get mad, because usually you don't pitch mad,
- 38:12Speaker 1: starting off like you pitched it with a calm head,
- 38:15Speaker 1: and then somebody gets on base. Then you start getting
- 38:18Speaker 1: not I wouldn't call it mad, but I guess hyper
- 38:20Speaker 1: focused whatever it is.
- 38:21Speaker 2: And then you hit just get that different gear going.
- 38:24Speaker 1: So why do you do that? Why do you go
- 38:26Speaker 1: because you didn't used to do that pitch at ninety
- 38:28Speaker 1: three ninety four and then run up to seven to eight,
- 38:32Speaker 1: Like is it just because of like wearing tear or
- 38:35Speaker 1: just something like you know what I'm saying, Yeah, because
- 38:38Speaker 1: I remember that year in seventeen bro, oh my god,
- 38:44Speaker 1: oh my goodness.
- 38:45Speaker 3: Oh man, that was my That was a good arm too.
- 38:49Speaker 3: I didn't have this guy then.
- 38:50Speaker 1: But for those who don't know, look up Chris Sels
- 38:54Speaker 1: twenty seventeen numbers please.
- 38:57Speaker 2: Yeah, that that was.
- 38:58Speaker 3: That was probably my most dominant year in terms of
- 39:01Speaker 3: like just going out there and just I mean that
- 39:04Speaker 3: that was. That was different. That was it was different.
- 39:08Speaker 3: And now I think I think now it's just I
- 39:11Speaker 3: know I can't. I don't think i'll I wouldn't make
- 39:14Speaker 3: it a full season redlining the whole time, right, Like
- 39:18Speaker 3: I use this example a lot too, and I think
- 39:20Speaker 3: that's why guys are getting hurt a lot. Now, I mean,
- 39:22Speaker 3: that's that's a whole different discussion. But like everybody or
- 39:26Speaker 3: most of the time, we're pitching at max effort, and
- 39:29Speaker 3: I just I don't think that that. Like I just
- 39:32Speaker 3: know I can't maintain max effort balls to the wall
- 39:36Speaker 3: one hundred percent for thirty plus starts, one hundred pitches
- 39:40Speaker 3: per it, you know, game all that stuff, so you
- 39:43Speaker 3: kind of have to pick your spots. And and again,
- 39:46Speaker 3: like sometimes I do get get hot out there. My
- 39:49Speaker 3: motor starts running hot, and you know, you got guys
- 39:51Speaker 3: on second and third and you got one out. It's like, okay, well,
- 39:55Speaker 3: now's the time, you know. So it's like, okay, let's
- 39:57Speaker 3: let's strand these runners here, and then you go back
- 39:59Speaker 3: out for the next inning and you start pitching a
- 40:02Speaker 3: little bit. But yeah, I just wouldn't be able to
- 40:05Speaker 3: maintain that level of intensity through an entire year and
- 40:10Speaker 3: stay healthy, I believe.
- 40:11Speaker 1: So what what would you say the difference between twenty
- 40:14Speaker 1: seventeen Chris sail is in twenty twenty four, twenty twenty
- 40:19Speaker 1: five Chris Sail And for me, I would say facing well,
- 40:23Speaker 1: I think I guessaid in face you in seventeen, but
- 40:25Speaker 1: prior to like sometimes you would just out stuff whoever
- 40:30Speaker 1: the hitter is, Like, you know, I would just I'm
- 40:32Speaker 1: just gonna beat you because I'm throwing ninety nine from
- 40:34Speaker 1: the side with a sweepy slider in a nasty changeup
- 40:38Speaker 1: and you just can't hit it. And it's like, now
- 40:42Speaker 1: what I see is like, yeah, I can do that
- 40:46Speaker 1: same thing at ninety two though, like and and make
- 40:49Speaker 1: more starts or you know or whatever. And so now
- 40:51Speaker 1: it's like instead of me just aiming down the middle
- 40:53Speaker 1: and throwing my ninety nine, now I'm gonna take my
- 40:56Speaker 1: ninety three and stuff it and you're still not going
- 40:59Speaker 1: to be able to hit it. So I want to
- 41:00Speaker 1: from you know what you feel like the difference between
- 41:03Speaker 1: you is between these two years.
- 41:05Speaker 3: So I would say I just try to be a
- 41:07Speaker 3: little bit smarter with with how I operate just in general,
- 41:11Speaker 3: like I would say last year, I slept more last
- 41:14Speaker 3: year than I slept any other like, so I worked
- 41:17Speaker 3: really hard on recovery when I was twenty five twenty
- 41:20Speaker 3: six years old.
- 41:22Speaker 1: Taco Bail, I didn't need to sleep.
- 41:24Speaker 2: It didn't matter what I ate, Like it didn't matter
- 41:28Speaker 2: what my routine was. Like I'd literally go like this three.
- 41:31Speaker 3: Times, hand me the ball and just start flinging that
- 41:34Speaker 3: thing at ninety five ninety six, and like it was
- 41:35Speaker 3: just it just came easier. Now there's a lot of
- 41:40Speaker 3: things that I have to do throughout the week to
- 41:42Speaker 3: get back to one hundred percent, and I'm just smarter,
- 41:47Speaker 3: you know, Like there were times where you know, I
- 41:50Speaker 3: was very much trying to put you know, the square
- 41:53Speaker 3: peg in the circle hole, and I was just trying
- 41:55Speaker 3: to I'm going to force this to happen, as opposed
- 41:59Speaker 3: to like, hey, let's take a step back, take a
- 42:01Speaker 3: look at like what the situation is. And sometimes sometimes
- 42:05Speaker 3: you going with a game plan, you got to switch
- 42:06Speaker 3: it up. And I was like, you know, like you said,
- 42:09Speaker 3: it was it was everything I got all the time.
- 42:13Speaker 3: And you're right, like I was lucky enough to be
- 42:15Speaker 3: able to go out there sometimes and just flat just
- 42:18Speaker 3: beat people without having to really compete, you know what
- 42:23Speaker 3: I mean. And now it's like, okay, like you got
- 42:26Speaker 3: to pitch sometimes, Like in my last start, I mean,
- 42:28Speaker 3: I'm rearing back. I was in Denver and there's a
- 42:31Speaker 3: day game, you know, I'm rearing back for like ninety
- 42:36Speaker 3: three that day. So it's like, hey, man, right, Like
- 42:39Speaker 3: I mean, I'm I'm like grunting on this thing.
- 42:41Speaker 2: It's ninety four and I'm like, all right, man, Like
- 42:44Speaker 2: it's just not one of those days.
- 42:45Speaker 3: So like you have to adjust, you have to make
- 42:47Speaker 3: some different changes in how you operate, and I think
- 42:51Speaker 3: I'm better at that now than I was.
- 42:53Speaker 1: Then. Do you think somebody like, you know, these young
- 42:57Speaker 1: guys coming up all throwing, you know, sitting a hundred
- 43:01Speaker 1: all game and I'm not saying your advice to them
- 43:05Speaker 1: or X Y and Z, but like, do you think
- 43:08Speaker 1: how long is that really sustainable for them? You know,
- 43:11Speaker 1: without because I feel like I feel like guys like
- 43:15Speaker 1: the grom as well, like now that he's you know,
- 43:19Speaker 1: his second tej or whatever, he's come back. Now he's
- 43:22Speaker 1: throwing ninety five ninety six, and he was like the
- 43:25Speaker 1: same guy, Like obviously his his command is elite. Yeah
- 43:29Speaker 1: it was at one hundred and hundred and two, but
- 43:32Speaker 1: like now he's gonna have to move it around a
- 43:34Speaker 1: little more, X Y and Z because now he's amongst
- 43:37Speaker 1: the normal people throwing ninety five. You know what I'm
- 43:39Speaker 1: saying he's amongst the normal people. Now, can't he still.
- 43:42Speaker 3: Sit just like this normal that's a Toyota Corolla now exactly.
- 43:48Speaker 1: And so I feel like guys like him, you guys
- 43:51Speaker 1: like to have the power, but choose not to because
- 43:57Speaker 1: I'm going to maneuver my way through the game. It's
- 43:59Speaker 1: almost like I'm not gonna say it's better, but maybe
- 44:03Speaker 1: more efficient in the long run for health. What do
- 44:06Speaker 1: you think about that?
- 44:07Speaker 2: No? I agree. I think.
- 44:10Speaker 3: It's just it's it's a tough thing because it's once
- 44:13Speaker 3: once the cat's out of the bag and never goes back.
- 44:15Speaker 2: In, right.
- 44:16Speaker 3: And I think with all the analytics, all the numbers
- 44:20Speaker 3: that we have, you're always again like we talked about earlier,
- 44:24Speaker 3: you're always chasing that elite number. You're always chasing your
- 44:29Speaker 3: best fastball. You're always wanting the best, the most spin
- 44:33Speaker 3: on your breaking ball. And you know, if you have
- 44:36Speaker 3: a guy that's got that throw, that can throw ninety
- 44:38Speaker 3: eight ninety nine, you're not gonna really you're not gonna
- 44:42Speaker 3: want them to get beat with ninety two ninety three.
- 44:45Speaker 3: And not only that, just just the way this game
- 44:48Speaker 3: is kind of operating now, like you can lose your
- 44:51Speaker 3: job and a handful of outings and so it's like
- 44:55Speaker 3: you're always you're always wanting the premium of what you
- 44:59Speaker 3: can produce.
- 45:00Speaker 1: Yeah, and it's just hard to sustain being premium.
- 45:03Speaker 3: Well, and that's the problem, right is is Yeah, And
- 45:06Speaker 3: I use this, I use this analogy. Right like you
- 45:08Speaker 3: go buy go, buy a brand new car today. Whatever
- 45:10Speaker 3: card does, it doesn't matter. And every time you put
- 45:13Speaker 3: that thing in drive, just put it to the floor,
- 45:16Speaker 3: just pedal to the metal, redline it and go. I
- 45:19Speaker 3: mean you can you it might break the first time
- 45:23Speaker 3: you do it. You might get a couple of years
- 45:25Speaker 3: down the road before it breaks, but like it's something
- 45:27Speaker 3: is going to happen, Like that's not sustainable, and it's
- 45:31Speaker 3: I think it's very similar to Pitcher's arms, where it's
- 45:33Speaker 3: like when you're young and you're strong and you you
- 45:37Speaker 3: have that ability, you can do it for a little while,
- 45:39Speaker 3: and you might even be able to do it for
- 45:42Speaker 3: quite a while, but eventually like it's going to stop,
- 45:45Speaker 3: and then you got arm problems and then you come
- 45:47Speaker 3: back and then it's you know, it's it's effort. Yeah,
- 45:50Speaker 3: and it's tough to learn how to pitch, you know,
- 45:52Speaker 3: seven years into your career, you know, as opposed to
- 45:55Speaker 3: learning how to pitch and then gaining arm speed after that.
- 45:58Speaker 1: I got a question, like, what's next for you? So
- 46:03Speaker 1: you want to say young one, m v P or
- 46:07Speaker 1: MVP uh World Series. You've won pretty much all awards.
- 46:13Speaker 1: I mean, what what what keeps you coming to the
- 46:15Speaker 1: park every day.
- 46:18Speaker 3: I still like it, I still have fun, and I think,
- 46:23Speaker 3: you know, knock on wood. The worst part about this
- 46:26Speaker 3: game for me was being hurt and I went.
- 46:29Speaker 2: I spent a lot of.
- 46:30Speaker 3: Time being hurt and and that, and it really kind
- 46:32Speaker 3: of sucked the life out of me. And it becomes
- 46:37Speaker 3: playing baseball is fun. Showing up to the yard every
- 46:41Speaker 3: day expecting to win with the boys is a lot
- 46:44Speaker 3: of fun. Showing up every day to put needles in
- 46:48Speaker 3: your elbow or you know, do some kind of rehab
- 46:51Speaker 3: or whatever it is, it's not fun. And you know,
- 46:54Speaker 3: I got to a point where it was like, man, this,
- 46:58Speaker 3: I don't know if I want to do this anymore.
- 46:59Speaker 3: Like this is it was just like one thing right
- 47:01Speaker 3: after the other. And then like right when I saw
- 47:03Speaker 3: a light at the end of the tunnel, that light
- 47:05Speaker 3: was headlights to a bus, So I I it just
- 47:12Speaker 3: became this like okay, when's it gonna happen again type
- 47:14Speaker 3: of thing, and then you know, I was able to
- 47:17Speaker 3: kind of get over that hump and it was like, man,
- 47:19Speaker 3: this is this is fun again. So I've I've I've
- 47:21Speaker 3: kind of come to the to my place of like, okay,
- 47:24Speaker 3: you know, if something were to happen again, or if
- 47:26Speaker 3: I can't compete, you know, it's time to go home.
- 47:29Speaker 3: If you're not having fun, and if you can't stay healthy,
- 47:32Speaker 3: and if you're not doing your team a service, it's
- 47:35Speaker 3: probably time to pack it up.
- 47:36Speaker 1: That that's I I agree with that because it's like
- 47:39Speaker 1: now is you know, once you win and at first
- 47:42Speaker 1: when you come into the league, like everybody wants to win.
- 47:45Speaker 2: It's how young.
- 47:46Speaker 1: Everybody wants to win a VP, everybody wants to win
- 47:48Speaker 1: these awards. And it's like, well, once you kind of
- 47:50Speaker 1: do that, like your your your your brain has to
- 47:53Speaker 1: come has it really shift and find something and really
- 47:58Speaker 1: it's like love. It's gonna have to be love in
- 48:00Speaker 1: some way form or fashion, whether you love the game,
- 48:02Speaker 1: love being around the boys, you know, just just love competing,
- 48:07Speaker 1: you know, whatever it is. And I really found, like,
- 48:11Speaker 1: you know, for me, I really just love being around
- 48:17Speaker 1: the boys and coming to the yard in the preparation.
- 48:19Speaker 1: I really love preparing the game. The game itself is
- 48:23Speaker 1: like it's cool. You know, the game is cool when
- 48:25Speaker 1: we're playing the game, like it might having.
- 48:27Speaker 2: Fun sure some but you're still like I'm locked in.
- 48:30Speaker 1: I'm locked in. But the fun part for me is
- 48:32Speaker 1: like when I'm taking ground balls and when I'm hitting VP,
- 48:34Speaker 1: and like, I don't know, maybe that that that part
- 48:37Speaker 1: is just I just love love coming to the park
- 48:40Speaker 1: to do.
- 48:40Speaker 3: And so when you got to you gotta you gotta
- 48:42Speaker 3: find a way to not get lost. And you know, again,
- 48:46Speaker 3: like you win an MVP, you win a World Series
- 48:49Speaker 3: of cy Young, you know, you get these big contracts,
- 48:51Speaker 3: like you have to keep finding a way to like okay,
- 48:55Speaker 3: like that's not the end result that I'm looking for.
- 48:58Speaker 3: You know, like the chase never stops until you're done, right,
- 49:02Speaker 3: and you know, you you see, I'm sure you've seen
- 49:05Speaker 3: people kind of get caught up and like, oh, I've
- 49:07Speaker 3: already done this, so they kind of they ease off,
- 49:09Speaker 3: right or you know, whatever whatever it is that they
- 49:13Speaker 3: were chasing they get and then it's and then it's
- 49:15Speaker 3: like okay, now, the chase is over, and it's like
- 49:17Speaker 3: you you you kind of have to run that race
- 49:19Speaker 3: every year. And to your point, loving this game is
- 49:24Speaker 3: probably going to fuel that more than anything, because if
- 49:27Speaker 3: you if you, if you have a bunch of money,
- 49:29Speaker 3: there's no there's no amount of money that's going to
- 49:31Speaker 3: get you to be competitive again. And and if and
- 49:35Speaker 3: if winning the MVP was the most important thing to you,
- 49:38Speaker 3: then it's gonna be hard to bring you back after
- 49:40Speaker 3: something like that. So you know the passion that you
- 49:43Speaker 3: have for this game, and just to respect you have
- 49:45Speaker 3: for your teammates too, knowing like, Okay, these guys are
- 49:47Speaker 3: still counting on me, Like I've got this stuff, but
- 49:49Speaker 3: like these guys.
- 49:49Speaker 2: Still need me.
- 49:50Speaker 3: So it's like you know, you that that brotherhood kind
- 49:53Speaker 3: of keeps bringing you back to exactly exactly.
- 49:55Speaker 1: So before we wrap up, I want to play a
- 49:58Speaker 1: game called Battery Up. I would I would say I'm
- 50:04Speaker 1: cold at this game, like I'm I mean leading at
- 50:06Speaker 1: this game. All right, this is my game. So this
- 50:09Speaker 1: podcast at this game, this is for you. I want
- 50:13Speaker 1: you to, uh, I want you to. I want to
- 50:16Speaker 1: see if you know about it since you don't really
- 50:18Speaker 1: watch guys and so you may not be all the
- 50:21Speaker 1: way up to all the new swings. You watch the game,
- 50:23Speaker 1: so you'll probably know something. But look at who is that?
- 50:30Speaker 2: Mmm mm hmmm.
- 50:32Speaker 1: You got these guesses. I already know who it is.
- 50:42Speaker 1: I know who it is.
- 50:47Speaker 2: You ready?
- 50:48Speaker 1: No, No, that's a guest.
- 50:50Speaker 2: Though.
- 50:51Speaker 1: How many guesses does he get? Guys?
- 50:56Speaker 2: Okay? Oh I got none of them?
- 50:58Speaker 1: Yeah you you?
- 50:59Speaker 2: Yeah? Oh so this is I've seen this game. I
- 51:02Speaker 2: don't play this game, but you.
- 51:03Speaker 1: Can guess all the age position.
- 51:08Speaker 2: So what is that? What is that lie? So that
- 51:09Speaker 2: means he doesn't play for the Dodgers.
- 51:12Speaker 1: His number, Yeah, you didn't get any of those rights,
- 51:15Speaker 1: so he doesn't. So his number is the first category?
- 51:20Speaker 1: Then yeah team? Then uh oh that's the vision and
- 51:26Speaker 1: then he was narrows it for me right exactly. Yeah, yeah,
- 51:30Speaker 1: you got nothing, so you got you're starting with a
- 51:32Speaker 1: clean slate.
- 51:32Speaker 2: You got a note like that bat.
- 51:36Speaker 1: He gets six guesses, so you got so now you've
- 51:39Speaker 1: got five guesses.
- 51:40Speaker 3: But so he's not on the Dodgers not so okay,
- 51:44Speaker 3: so I gotta go.
- 51:47Speaker 1: You're not gonna go. You're not gonna get his number,
- 51:50Speaker 1: You're not going to get his age.
- 51:53Speaker 2: He's still playing. Yeah.
- 51:59Speaker 1: Oh yeah, that's a sweet swing too.
- 52:01Speaker 2: It is a nice swing.
- 52:03Speaker 1: Golly, you don't know that. Yeah, you don't watch me.
- 52:06Speaker 2: Yeah, sometimes I don't even know who I'm facing.
- 52:10Speaker 3: I'm being I'm being completely serious. I'll go through a
- 52:12Speaker 3: whole lineup and be.
- 52:14Speaker 1: Like, that's what it is. That's how the league is
- 52:18Speaker 1: now though there's so many there's so many young guys
- 52:20Speaker 1: up and coming.
- 52:21Speaker 2: Is he a young guy? No, No, this guy's not.
- 52:27Speaker 1: Yes, you definitely have. You definitely have.
- 52:30Speaker 2: Oh no, you have, dude, I'll be honest.
- 52:35Speaker 1: Okay, okay, okay, okay, okay, all right, so I help you.
- 52:40Speaker 1: He's that he's with the Astros.
- 52:44Speaker 2: Oh Alvarez.
- 52:45Speaker 3: Yeah, he'd have a few less homers if I didn't
- 52:48Speaker 3: face them.
- 52:52Speaker 2: That he That is a that is a you're not
- 52:55Speaker 2: very very powerful swing.
- 52:57Speaker 1: That is a very powerful swinging up. They can't stump
- 53:01Speaker 1: me on this. So sorry, guys, I mean, nice try,
- 53:04Speaker 1: but uh, you got him though, you got him.
- 53:07Speaker 2: I was I was stumped.
- 53:10Speaker 1: Like he does.
- 53:12Speaker 2: Like once it wasn't Fridday.
- 53:13Speaker 1: They wouldn't put Freddie in here because that would be
- 53:15Speaker 1: that would be too easy. But anyways, right now, so
- 53:18Speaker 1: but Anyways, my man sell it. Thanks for coming on
- 53:21Speaker 1: the show.
- 53:22Speaker 2: Bro.
- 53:23Speaker 1: You know, I feel like we have a special bond
- 53:26Speaker 1: obviously from playing this beautiful game of baseball together, winning
- 53:30Speaker 1: the World Series together. I feel like we're like, quote unquote,
- 53:35Speaker 1: we did, We're going to do life together because you know,
- 53:38Speaker 1: through this game you build so many relationships with people,
- 53:42Speaker 1: and you know, the kids and seeing seeing everybody. I
- 53:46Speaker 1: want to see Ryland. How old is he now?
- 53:48Speaker 2: He turns fifteen and two days and he's.
- 53:51Speaker 1: I don't remember the other baby's names, but Ryland was
- 53:54Speaker 1: always there.
- 53:55Speaker 3: Well, Ryland was the only he was the only one
- 53:57Speaker 3: you know that that you saw. I guess when Brace
- 53:59Speaker 3: was born in eighteen, like late in the year, so
- 54:02Speaker 3: he would you have only met him in spring training?
- 54:04Speaker 3: And then Camden he's five. Yeah, three boys. Man, It's
- 54:08Speaker 3: it's crazy.
- 54:09Speaker 1: That's like that's that's a household. Do they all they
- 54:12Speaker 1: all play like yes, sports.
- 54:14Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 54:14Speaker 3: My youngest son is more of like swimming, riding his bike,
- 54:17Speaker 3: like more adventurous type of stuff. But the other two
- 54:20Speaker 3: it's it's baseball, it's basketball, pickleball, golf, every everything.
- 54:25Speaker 2: We got everything outside.
- 54:26Speaker 1: You and you're gonna like how much longer you want
- 54:29Speaker 1: to play? Do you know, do you want to be
- 54:32Speaker 1: the forty two year old you know what I'm saying,
- 54:33Speaker 1: forty three up there or you don't know yet.
- 54:36Speaker 3: If if my arm stays together and I can still
- 54:39Speaker 3: go out there and compete, I'm ill. I'll play until
- 54:42Speaker 3: someone says they don't want me on their teams. So
- 54:44Speaker 3: I mean and and maybe that might be a little exaggerated,
- 54:47Speaker 3: but I again, like I had, I had this game
- 54:51Speaker 3: and then I got it taken away. I just got
- 54:52Speaker 3: it back last year, so you know, so it's like
- 54:54Speaker 3: I'm I'm this is fun for me again, and I
- 54:57Speaker 3: kind of want to do this, you know, if I'm
- 54:59Speaker 3: serviceable when someone thinks I can do it and no
- 55:02Speaker 3: crazy injuries, I'm in.
- 55:05Speaker 1: All right, brother, Yes sir, Well, I will see you
- 55:07Speaker 1: at the field again. Thanks for coming. Tell Breed tell everybody,
- 55:10Speaker 1: I said, Well, hopefully she got to watch so but anyways,
- 55:15Speaker 1: we'll see you guys next time on on base
