- 0:18Speaker 1: Return to Glory podcast Hunter Zarberniki here on my own
- 0:23Speaker 1: doing a solo pod without Austin and Dak. I am
- 0:26Speaker 1: in Seattle for a work trip here before the big
- 0:30Speaker 1: game on Saturday. Dak and Austin will be going in
- 0:33Speaker 1: the morning on Thursday mornings, so by the time you
- 0:36Speaker 1: listen to this, theirs will be at the end of
- 0:39Speaker 1: the podcast. And we just couldn't make time changes work.
- 0:43Speaker 1: Now we know how it feels to play in the
- 0:45Speaker 1: Big Ten. But anyways, big game, Big game Saturday, coming
- 0:51Speaker 1: to Lincoln the Michigan Wolverines. I do want to point
- 0:55Speaker 1: out it's a big game, and I'm not trying to
- 0:59Speaker 1: understand the importance of this for our season, but if Nebraska,
- 1:05Speaker 1: if we were to lose this game, our season is
- 1:08Speaker 1: not over. The Cincinnati game beginning of the year, different story,
- 1:16Speaker 1: that was a big game for different reasons. But the
- 1:19Speaker 1: magnitude of what this could mean for Matt Rule and
- 1:23Speaker 1: his future at Nebraska, the ceiling that he could climb
- 1:29Speaker 1: and how soon he could get there after a win
- 1:31Speaker 1: like this, that's why it's a big game. And it's
- 1:35Speaker 1: also the first conference game of the year, so keep
- 1:38Speaker 1: that in mind. Non conference games best case scenario, you
- 1:41Speaker 1: go three to zero.
- 1:43Speaker 2: Check that box. We did that.
- 1:46Speaker 1: But now it's conference conference schedules here, and we got
- 1:49Speaker 1: a tough opponent to start out in the Michigan Wolverines.
- 1:53Speaker 1: Here's my take. I still want to see it to
- 1:57Speaker 1: believe it. I know this year's been very very good
- 2:01Speaker 1: so far for many reasons. Cincinnati game, you know, maybe
- 2:04Speaker 1: some disappointment coming out of some people, but we found
- 2:08Speaker 1: a way to win.
- 2:08Speaker 2: That game of one score game.
- 2:11Speaker 1: Last two games, taken for what they're worth, we've had
- 2:15Speaker 1: to kind of claw away through the talking points here
- 2:18Speaker 1: with some of the different players that we're getting in
- 2:20Speaker 1: the game. But now the show starts and we are
- 2:26Speaker 1: going to see what this team is made of and
- 2:29Speaker 1: what the rest of this season is going to look like.
- 2:31Speaker 1: Right now, I think every game is going to be
- 2:34Speaker 1: a close game. I think we're going to be in
- 2:37Speaker 1: a lot of one score battles. As Matt Rules said,
- 2:40Speaker 1: you win those one score battles when you just have
- 2:43Speaker 1: a little bit, just a little bit better players. And
- 2:48Speaker 1: what we want to believe is that we do. We
- 2:51Speaker 1: were against Cincinnati just a little little bit better. We'll
- 2:56Speaker 1: see against Michigan. And my initial gut reaction does not
- 3:02Speaker 1: feel great. I've got a chance to watch a little
- 3:04Speaker 1: bit of Michigan against Oklahoma earlier this week. They're just
- 3:09Speaker 1: a better football team than Cincinnati, and it's gonna be
- 3:13Speaker 1: a battle. I do not think, and I could be wrong.
- 3:16Speaker 1: I do not think this is going to be a
- 3:20Speaker 1: two or three possession game. It's going to come down
- 3:23Speaker 1: to a few plays in the game. And so far
- 3:27Speaker 1: we have not shot ourselves in the foot. We've done
- 3:29Speaker 1: a very good job of that. But this game, we're
- 3:34Speaker 1: gonna see. Last time Michigan came into Lincoln, we almost
- 3:38Speaker 1: had him, We had him on the ropes. Then an
- 3:40Speaker 1: Adrian Martinez fumble led to a Michigan win.
- 3:47Speaker 2: Here's what we need to do, in my mind, to
- 3:50Speaker 2: stop Michigan's offense. The run game.
- 3:55Speaker 1: Is very, very concerning, and that's the key talking point.
- 3:58Speaker 1: Can we slow down Michigan run game? Rule mentioned it
- 4:01Speaker 1: in his press conference, the players have mentioned, the assistant
- 4:04Speaker 1: coaches have mentioned it. That is the message, how to
- 4:08Speaker 1: stop Michigan's run game. Bryce Underwood very mobile quarterback, although
- 4:14Speaker 1: apparently not many designed runs, but neither did Brandon Sooresby.
- 4:18Speaker 1: It's gonna be a lot of maybe broken down plays
- 4:20Speaker 1: off our secondary desert job. Can we contain Underwood on
- 4:24Speaker 1: the second, third, and fourth efforts that he's gonna be
- 4:26Speaker 1: giving when scrambling. My most important key thing on defense
- 4:33Speaker 1: is if we're gonna lose this game and we're gonna
- 4:36Speaker 1: get beat, Bryce Underwood better have three hundred to three
- 4:39Speaker 1: hundred and fifty passing yards. It better be because we
- 4:43Speaker 1: sold out on the run. We loaded the box up,
- 4:46Speaker 1: and he proved himself as a true fresh freshman on
- 4:50Speaker 1: the road in a hostile environment and Lincoln, Nebraska that
- 4:54Speaker 1: he can go out and be a dude and just
- 4:57Speaker 1: make throws against our very experience and deary, that's how
- 5:02Speaker 1: I would attack it. And yeah, it might look goofy
- 5:05Speaker 1: at times when there's no safeties over the top and
- 5:07Speaker 1: we just have extra guys in the box. Because if
- 5:09Speaker 1: we can't stop their base run game, good night, and
- 5:14Speaker 1: we're gonna know if this is the approach we're taking
- 5:17Speaker 1: very very early on in this football game, so we'll see.
- 5:23Speaker 1: I think that's the concerning piece, that's the talking point
- 5:26Speaker 1: on that side of the ball.
- 5:28Speaker 2: How are we gonna slow them down?
- 5:29Speaker 1: Do we think it's gonna be a higher scoring or
- 5:31Speaker 1: lower scoring game. If we do it right, hopefully it
- 5:36Speaker 1: sits right in there in that twenty to seventeen, twenty three, twenty.
- 5:40Speaker 1: But I also don't think we're too scared of a
- 5:42Speaker 1: shootout if it needs to go that way. I don't
- 5:45Speaker 1: think we do. I don't think any Big ten team does.
- 5:48Speaker 1: But our offense seems very capable of doing that. And
- 5:53Speaker 1: I heard this on a pregame pod here this week.
- 5:56Speaker 1: Nebraska's strength on offense is there past game, and their
- 6:01Speaker 1: strength on defense is their past defense. Michigan's strength on
- 6:03Speaker 1: offense is their run offense, and their strength on defense
- 6:07Speaker 1: is their run defense. So think about that like, who's
- 6:11Speaker 1: gonna win out when they're going when supposedly every team
- 6:15Speaker 1: is gonna be better on that one aspect of the
- 6:17Speaker 1: side of the ball.
- 6:18Speaker 2: What's gonna win out?
- 6:21Speaker 1: Our offense has clearly shown that we could be dynamic
- 6:24Speaker 1: and explosive. We have some players and yes asterisks who
- 6:28Speaker 1: we played that can go make some plays, and we
- 6:32Speaker 1: haven't had that in a long time in Nebraska.
- 6:35Speaker 2: And I say that as I think we do.
- 6:37Speaker 1: I think this game is gonna show whether we do
- 6:39Speaker 1: or not against an opponent to that is a lot
- 6:43Speaker 1: more talented. Yeah, not I shouldn't say a lot more talented,
- 6:46Speaker 1: but more talented. Michigan has more talent than we do.
- 6:51Speaker 1: That's that's maybe my opinion. But I do think that they,
- 6:54Speaker 1: player for player, are better. So then it comes down
- 6:57Speaker 1: to how can our coaching staff scheme around that and
- 7:02Speaker 1: find a way to win this game at home? Back
- 7:05Speaker 1: to the offense here, Dylan, it's your time. This is
- 7:12Speaker 1: your game. You are the quarterback that is in your
- 7:16Speaker 1: second year. You've learned a lot from year one, your
- 7:21Speaker 1: freshman year, making some mistakes and growing from those. This
- 7:25Speaker 1: is your team, clearly in year two, even though it
- 7:28Speaker 1: probably already was in year one. It's your time now
- 7:31Speaker 1: to step up and go win a damn football game
- 7:34Speaker 1: when it matters most for Husker Nation. I think he
- 7:39Speaker 1: has a tool set. I think he has the mentality
- 7:41Speaker 1: to do it. I really do. And that is my
- 7:44Speaker 1: belief of why I think if we win this game,
- 7:47Speaker 1: it's because Dylan said, nope, uh huh, Bryce Underwood, You're
- 7:50Speaker 1: not coming in here and getting more hype and recognition
- 7:52Speaker 1: than I am.
- 7:53Speaker 2: This is my team, this is our stadium.
- 7:55Speaker 1: We're winning this football game, and we're gonna find a
- 7:57Speaker 1: way to do it, and so Dylan.
- 8:00Speaker 2: Ultimately I think it's gonna have to have a damn
- 8:01Speaker 2: good game.
- 8:02Speaker 1: And he's proven that he can do that last year.
- 8:05Speaker 1: So far this year he's been very, very good. I've
- 8:07Speaker 1: seen him in top two or three of the Big
- 8:09Speaker 1: ten quarterback rankings everywhere on social media. So Dylan is
- 8:13Speaker 1: going to be the guy that just has to get
- 8:16Speaker 1: us going. There's going to be adversity. It's not gonna
- 8:19Speaker 1: look perfect like it almost has the past couple of weeks.
- 8:23Speaker 1: We've had to nitpick and claw and find stuff to
- 8:25Speaker 1: pick hunt, which is not normal for what we've done
- 8:28Speaker 1: on this podcast or as Husker fans in general the
- 8:32Speaker 1: last ten or fifteen years. It's going to be a battle.
- 8:36Speaker 1: Things aren't gonna look good. But can Dylan Royola in
- 8:39Speaker 1: this offense find a way to overcome adversity. Hopefully not
- 8:43Speaker 1: overcome a turnover or two, but we might have to
- 8:46Speaker 1: and find a way to win this game on offense.
- 8:50Speaker 2: Emmett is gonna have to have a good game.
- 8:52Speaker 1: He's shown to be a strong back, but he's going
- 8:55Speaker 1: to have to stay healthy one and he might have
- 8:57Speaker 1: to get twenty to twenty five carries depending on how
- 8:59Speaker 1: the goes. He's shown to do that against Cincinnati. Everybody says, well,
- 9:03Speaker 1: eventually injuries come into conversation. We'll see receivers got to
- 9:09Speaker 1: step up. But most importantly, most importantly, offensive.
- 9:13Speaker 2: Linemen do your damn job.
- 9:17Speaker 1: And I do think we've heard a lot of good
- 9:21Speaker 1: things about this group. Their experience, they got depth. Run
- 9:27Speaker 1: blocking is important, but past the blocking too. We cannot
- 9:29Speaker 1: have a strip sack fumble because our offensive line whipped
- 9:33Speaker 1: on a block.
- 9:33Speaker 2: We've done that enough in the past. Uh Hu, this
- 9:37Speaker 2: time's over.
- 9:38Speaker 1: It's time to take a step here, Husker Nation. It's
- 9:41Speaker 1: time to move this program forwards. Beating a ranked team
- 9:44Speaker 1: Matt rules two and twenty something against top twenty five
- 9:47Speaker 1: teams in his career. Throw all these stats and numbers away.
- 9:51Speaker 1: Let's find a way to win this week and move
- 9:54Speaker 1: this program to take the next step.
- 9:56Speaker 2: Under Matt rule.
- 9:59Speaker 1: Keep in mind, if we don't, the world's not gonna collapse,
- 10:04Speaker 1: at least not yet. But this is a big point.
- 10:09Speaker 1: Like I said, I think there's more to win here
- 10:13Speaker 1: than there is to lose. If this coaching staff is
- 10:16Speaker 1: what we think they are and the program is at
- 10:18Speaker 1: a state where we think it's at. If a loss
- 10:22Speaker 1: like this causes things to fall off the rail, that's
- 10:26Speaker 1: a different story. That's a topic of conversation for another day.
- 10:30Speaker 1: But I don't want to have to get there if
- 10:32Speaker 1: I don't have to score prediction. I'm fired up high
- 10:39Speaker 1: on emotion. This is a big game, but let's see
- 10:43Speaker 1: a win first. I know I picked Cincinnati in Week one.
- 10:48Speaker 2: And we overcame that.
- 10:51Speaker 1: Let's see, let's win another big one at home in
- 10:56Speaker 1: front of the fans before I can believe in I
- 11:00Speaker 1: really think that we're gonna win.
- 11:02Speaker 2: So with that all that.
- 11:04Speaker 1: Being said, and what I think we need to do
- 11:06Speaker 1: to win the game, and what I want to happen
- 11:10Speaker 1: and really make Nebraska football take that next step. Unfortunately,
- 11:15Speaker 1: I'm gonna pick a loss and then probably get some.
- 11:18Speaker 2: Booze from that.
- 11:19Speaker 1: But I'm gonna take Michigan thirty Nebraska twenty, and we'll
- 11:25Speaker 1: see how we respond adversity if that truly were to happen.
- 11:28Speaker 1: So with that being said, we will listen to Austin
- 11:38Speaker 1: and Dak here how they break down the game and
- 11:43Speaker 1: cheer it lo out on Saturday two thirty Fox Sports. Also,
- 11:50Speaker 1: by the way, before I Go. Dylan did a phenomenal
- 11:54Speaker 1: job of pointing himself out on social media some silhouettes
- 12:01Speaker 1: between him and Patrick Mahomes. He knows it's not. He's
- 12:04Speaker 1: not trying to mimick him. He knows who he is
- 12:06Speaker 1: and he knows who Mahomes is. Anyways, Go Bagrad B
- 12:10Speaker 1: Michigan gb r.
- 13:12Speaker 2: R round back
