- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean. Here it is.
- 0:14Monday. It's the 10th of March and if
- 0:17you're in my part of the world, happy public holiday to you.
- 0:20I think it's 8 hours day or one of those clever public holidays
- 0:23that means we don't even have to work 8 hours.
- 0:25Oh fantastic. We are coming into the very
- 0:30final stanza, should we say, of the book of Second Kings.
- 0:34We've only got 5 more chapters to go and unfortunately today
- 0:38we're going to hear about two very poor kings ruling this tiny
- 0:43little vulnerable nation. So the nation of Israel was
- 0:48small, right? It was small, surrounded by
- 0:50these mega powers, and now the teeny tiny one tribe of Judah
- 0:57that got detached from that small nation of Israel, that's
- 1:00all that remains, surrounded on either side by these enormous
- 1:04empires. And let us see how they're going
- 1:07to fare. Yeah, this week we're going to
- 1:08see couple of dodgy kings, one outstanding king, and then sadly
- 1:13a downhill slide until God says enough is enough and Babylon
- 1:18will come and do its thing. But we have got a few days to go
- 1:21until we reach that part of the story, so let us hear.
- 1:24After the wonderful reign of Hezekiah, his son and grandson
- 1:29sadly choose not to follow in his great footsteps.
- 1:33So let us hear that story as we read together Second Kings
- 1:37chapter 21. Manasseh was 12 years old when
- 1:50he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem 55 years.
- 1:56His mother was Hefsipah. He did what was evil in the
- 1:59Lord's sight. Following the detestable
- 2:01practises of the Pagan nations that the Lord had driven from
- 2:04the land ahead of the Israelites.
- 2:07He rebuilt the Pagan shrines his father Hezekiah had destroyed.
- 2:11He constructed altars for Baal and set up an Asherapol, just as
- 2:17King Ahab of Israel had done. He also bowed before all the
- 2:22powers of the heavens and worshipped them.
- 2:26He built Pagan altars in the temple of the Lord.
- 2:29The place where the Lord had said, My name will remain in
- 2:33Jerusalem forever. He built these altars for all
- 2:37the powers of the heavens in both courtyards of the Lord's
- 2:40temple. Manasseh also sacrificed his own
- 2:44son in a fire. He practised sorcery and
- 2:47divination, and he consulted with mediums and psychics.
- 2:51He did much that was evil in the Lord's sight, arousing his
- 2:55anger. Manasseh even made a carved
- 2:59image of Asherah and set it up in the Temple, the very place
- 3:03where the Lord had told David and his son Solomon.
- 3:07My name will be honoured forever in this temple and in Jerusalem,
- 3:12the city I have chosen from among all the tribes of Israel.
- 3:16If the Israelites will be careful to obey My commands all
- 3:20the laws My servant Moses gave them, I will not send them into
- 3:25exile from this land that I gave their ancestors.
- 3:29But the people refused to listen, and Manasseh LED them to
- 3:33do even more evil than the Pagan nations that the Lord had
- 3:37destroyed when the people of Israel entered the land.
- 3:40Then the Lord said through His servants the prophets, King
- 3:45Manasseh of Judah has done many detestable things.
- 3:49He is even more wicked than the Amorites who lived in this land
- 3:53before Israel. He has caused the people of
- 3:56Judah to sin with his idols. So this is what the Lord the God
- 4:01of Israel says. I will bring such disaster on
- 4:05Jerusalem and Judah that the ears of those who hear about it
- 4:09will tingle with horror. I will judge Jerusalem by the
- 4:13same standard are used for Samaria, and the same measure
- 4:17are used for the family of Ahab. I will wipe away the people of
- 4:21Jerusalem as one wipes a dish and turns it upside down.
- 4:25Then I will reject even the remnant of my own people who are
- 4:29left, and I will hand them over as plunder for their enemies,
- 4:34for they have done great evil in my sight and have angered me
- 4:38ever since their ancestors came out of Egypt.
- 4:43Manasa also murdered many innocent people until Jerusalem
- 4:46was filled from one end to the other with innocent blood.
- 4:51This was in addition to the sin that he caused the people of
- 4:53Judah to commit, leading them to do evil in the Lord's sight.
- 4:58The rest of the events in Manasa's reign and everything he
- 5:01did, including the sins he committed, are recorded in the
- 5:05Book of the History of the Kings of Judah.
- 5:09When Manasa died, he was buried in the palace garden, the garden
- 5:13of Uzza. Then his son Amon became the
- 5:16next king. Amon was 22 years old when he
- 5:20became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem two years.
- 5:24His mother was Meshalameth, the daughter of Haraz from Jotba.
- 5:29He did what was evil in the Lord's sight, just as his father
- 5:33Manasseh had done. He followed the example of his
- 5:36father, worshipping the same idols his father had worshipped.
- 5:40He abandoned the Lord, the God of his ancestors, and he refused
- 5:45to follow the Lord's ways. Then Amon's own officials
- 5:50conspired against him and assassinated him in his palace.
- 5:54But the people of the land killed all those who had
- 5:57conspired against King Amon, and they made his son Josiah the
- 6:00next king. The rest of the events in Amon's
- 6:04reign and what he did are recorded in the Book of the
- 6:08History of the Kings of Judah. He was buried in his tomb in the
- 6:12garden of Ooza. Then his son Josiah became the
- 6:17next king. Our Lord, we hear these stories
- 6:30of old where you used your prophets to speak your words of
- 6:34truth and warning and sometimes encouragement, but certainly not
- 6:38in this chapter. To your people, Our Lord, thank
- 6:42you that we now live in a world that is under a new covenant
- 6:47where you, Jesus, you rule, and you have given us your Holy
- 6:52Spirit that lives in US and prompts us, but it's still quiet
- 6:57Voice our Jesus. Help us be more and more attuned
- 7:03to the Spirit's voice. Create in US a perception of
- 7:08your prompting, of your encouragement, of your
- 7:12redirection, so that we can truly live lives that bring
- 7:16about your Kingdom in this world, this fallen, broken
- 7:20world. Come, Holy Spirit, grow in US
- 7:25and shape us to be more like you.
- 7:28We pray all of this in your saving name, Jesus, Amen.
