- 0:49Hi, everyone.
- 0:49Welcome to any talks.
- 0:50Uh, happy see everybody here.
- 0:52We didn't, uh, have any talks long time.
- 0:56Uh, first of all, want to, uh, say that we got Alex, uh, Goldschmidt with us today.
- 1:01Welcome, Alex.
- 1:03Hi, Lou.
- 1:04Hi everybody.
- 1:05Uh, good to be on.
- 1:06Thanks for the invitation and really looking forward to a good chat over
- 1:10the, the next few minutes or so.
- 1:12Yeah.
- 1:12Thank you so much for being here with us.
- 1:14Uh, guys, want to remind you that, uh, for screen to speed, we're going
- 1:17to have upcoming event on April 19th, uh, with Sned and informal one 600.
- 1:23So if you're interested to watch this race, uh, with us.
- 1:26So please, uh, follow the channel and, uh, let's start Alex.
- 1:30Uh, so how did your love for racing first start?
- 1:33Like was it car or like you watched some races or something else?
- 1:38Um, I go back to, I'm, I'm gonna really show my age here, Lou.
- 1:43Uh, I go back to the mid 1980s.
- 1:45Um, my dad and a few of his friends were big petrolhead and we got the opportu,
- 1:51well, myself and my best friend at school at the time, we ended up going to
- 1:54Brands Hatch, and this was back in the day when Formula One had pre-qualifying.
- 1:58We missed pre-qualifying by 20 minutes.
- 2:01Ended up watching Formula forward, uh, from then.
- 2:05Dad made it a usual thing.
- 2:06I think the first Grand Prix we watched together was the iconic 1988 Monte
- 2:11Carno Grand Prix when Sena was trying to lap frost, put it in the, uh, in
- 2:15the barriers just before the tunnel.
- 2:18But it was that sense of, um, how Aton drove the car.
- 2:23Like he, it was like it was his tango partner on the dance floor.
- 2:27It just captivated me, the sound, the noise, the, just the
- 2:30visceral nature of motorsport.
- 2:32And then I became a really, really big fan.
- 2:34We, we were watching as many Grand Prix as we could, depending
- 2:37on what the family was doing.
- 2:39And, uh, it just went on from there.
- 2:41Uh, after every single, you know, like four one was part of my life,
- 2:45uh, the best part of two decades.
- 2:48And then I. Started enjoying other motor sports.
- 2:50So like sports cars, feeders, single seaters, uh, single seaters.
- 2:55Uh, DTM was another one.
- 2:57Um.
- 2:58That I really got into.
- 2:59And then most recently, in the last decade, you know, ims, a world sports, uh,
- 3:04you know, the World Endurance Championship and, and there's so much more motor
- 3:08sport out there to, to really enjoy.
- 3:12And I've become a lover of all, all things that's got an engine note and burns tires,
- 3:17burns fuel, and provides great racing.
- 3:20So you're really passionate about racing all the noises and all
- 3:24the stuff that's really cool.
- 3:25So I think we all, uh, we hear, uh, all really like, uh, that in racing.
- 3:30Definitely.
- 3:31Uh, do you remember the first time you realized like that.
- 3:35Really your thing.
- 3:37So not like you like watching races and, uh mm-hmm.
- 3:41You know, go for events.
- 3:42Uh, you realize that you, uh, can jump into industry and be in it.
- 3:47Um, I sort of got an itch that I wanted to scratch back in the late
- 3:50two thousands, so like 2008, 2009.
- 3:54And I wanted to be like the best F1 reporter going, you know, formula One
- 3:59was what I really, really loved, and it was, it was like at that level a
- 4:03little bit higher than everything else.
- 4:05Um, so I got in touch with some people.
- 4:08Um, I didn't really have any experience, uh, but my mom always told
- 4:12me that when I was younger, she said.
- 4:15You found it, uh, that I would find it better to communicate on,
- 4:19uh, a pen and a piece of paper rather than speaking to people.
- 4:24And through that I made some connections with, say, a pop culture website that
- 4:28needed a, uh, a motor sports writer.
- 4:31I then ended up going through multiple different websites, um, whereby it
- 4:37was voluntary work so you weren't getting paid for what you loved doing.
- 4:41Uh, and it was then when I got to like 2015 where commentary became on my radar.
- 4:47Mm-hmm.
- 4:48And I got the opportunity to do some voluntary work on, uh, downforce radio.
- 4:54Uh, a channel that was founded by a good friend who was still
- 4:57a good friend to this stage.
- 4:58Jake Sanson and I ended up doing the four hours of funk up, ran Hatch indie.
- 5:02We had every single chaotic situation.
- 5:06We had multiple safety cars.
- 5:07We had.
- 5:09Slippery surface flags.
- 5:10The weather came in 30 minutes before the end of the race and we were
- 5:13red flagged with 90 seconds to go.
- 5:15'cause the Rangers went completely ballistic.
- 5:18And then I thought after that I just went, you know what?
- 5:22I'd rather do the commentary because you're able to provide
- 5:27your personality, but also.
- 5:29Tell the story the way that you see it mm-hmm.
- 5:33To the general viewers or listeners out there.
- 5:35And so I got bitten by the bug and commentary is now my livelihood.
- 5:40I I, I travel around so many places I. I think I did 80,000 kilometers worth
- 5:45of travel last year, 43 flights, and that's every single kilometer measure.
- 5:50So from like driving to the airport, flying in the plane to a location, I
- 5:54think my longest trip last year was London Heathrow to Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia to
- 6:01commentate at the Sang karting circuit.
- 6:03And that was about a good 18,000 kilometers travel there and
- 6:08back with a stop off in Doha.
- 6:10On each journey, so, mm-hmm.
- 6:12It was, um, it's crazy how chaotic my life has been at weekends.
- 6:19But the good thing is I've got a very, very close family and it's always nice
- 6:23to come back home and sleep in your own bed when you've been away for three to
- 6:27four days and you're just like that.
- 6:29I just need the comforts of home.
- 6:31Mm-hmm.
- 6:32Uh, let's talk a little bit about your travels.
- 6:35Uh, do you remember any.
- 6:36Pan things, uh, which happened also.
- 6:39Uh, good to know that you visited, uh, Sipan.
- 6:41I race here a lot of times, uh, with formal BMW, then with formal war,
- 6:47um, just in love with the circuits.
- 6:48Uh, conditions are tough, but, uh mm-hmm.
- 6:52Sipan is, is great one.
- 6:54Um.
- 6:55Yeah.
- 6:56Um, funny travel stories.
- 6:58Actually, most recently, uh, we're talking probably within the last
- 7:02month, if anyone might remember that London Heathrow was shut down
- 7:05due to the, the sub power station.
- 7:08Three miles south bursting into flames.
- 7:11Uh, well I was due to, I was due to fly to Brussels to go to Kati
- 7:16Dian in southern Belgium, right off the Franco Belgian border.
- 7:21So there's been no notifications on my smartphone, no notifications
- 7:25on the N 25 leading to e throw.
- 7:27And I rock up to the car park and they go, uh, the barrier's up.
- 7:31So like, instantly you think, what's going on here?
- 7:34And they said, um, he throws clothes today.
- 7:40Like this.
- 7:40And I go, what are, are you kidding me?
- 7:43I, I've got a business trip.
- 7:46And like, he looked me up and down.
- 7:47He said, you didn't like look, look like you're going on business.
- 7:50I said, am a motor sports commentator?
- 7:51Come on.
- 7:52I said, don't judge appearances by, by the, by the cover.
- 7:56You know?
- 7:56Um, and so I said, well, what's the situation?
- 8:00Oh, well, the.
- 8:02The, the, the parking provider will get in touch with you.
- 8:05Obviously your flight provider will get in touch with you, which I have
- 8:08to give shout out to British Airways.
- 8:10They were absolutely spot on.
- 8:12Um, flight was canceled and I was able to reboot my flights for another time.
- 8:17So.
- 8:19The good thing is being in the southeast of the United Kingdom, you are not
- 8:23that far away from the Euro tunnel.
- 8:25Mm-hmm.
- 8:25So, and this is like 20 past five in the morning, Luke, and I've just gone.
- 8:30Right.
- 8:31The only way I, so I looked on flights for Gatwick direct to Brussels.
- 8:35None.
- 8:36Lutin none.
- 8:37Stan Stanzi, no.
- 8:39Uh, London City Airport.
- 8:42No.
- 8:42And I went, okay.
- 8:43Right.
- 8:43The only way I can do this is, uh.
- 8:46I've gotta book the Euro tunnel and rebook the flights for another time.
- 8:49So, which luckily enough, I had an event mm-hmm.
- 8:51To the same location two weeks later.
- 8:54So there I was at seven o'clock in the morning booking euro tunnel, uh,
- 8:59Euro tunnel, uh, crossings to and from Bruss, uh, to and from Cali.
- 9:05And I was communicating with my assistant.
- 9:07She'd gotten up early because my.
- 9:10Um, my nephew Austin, who's the apple of our eye here, um, he's five years
- 9:15old, he's turning six in August.
- 9:17He's fully autistic, nonverbal, um, and is very, very sensory sensitive.
- 9:24So like, say noise, light, um, sudden sounds, um, sudden movement even.
- 9:31Um, she'd kept my sister up a little bit during the night from about
- 9:35three until five that morning, and I said, right, okay, I need
- 9:39to book the Euro tunnel ticket.
- 9:40She said, well, you've gotta do the work.
- 9:42You've gotta do it, so just get it done.
- 9:44I then had to stop off at the local, local, um, cast spares
- 9:48place to pick up a first aid kit.
- 9:50'cause that was the only thing I was missing.
- 9:51So I had the, the high visibility vest, the hazard triangle, the bulb kit.
- 9:56Um, and then the first aid kit was the only thing I needed, and I think
- 10:01I drove about 1400 kilometers in total there and back and all these, mm-hmm.
- 10:05Surrounding mileage.
- 10:07Um, so that was, um, that was a, my most recent, uh, funny experience.
- 10:14Other things that have happened to me, um, I've had higher car companies,
- 10:20major higher car companies actually say we've run out of vehicles.
- 10:24Like literally you are having, then you have to find another provider
- 10:27and then you find that provider's more expensive, yada, yada, yada.
- 10:31So it's like minor things, but it, when I got to Marburg, um, I
- 10:36spoke with a couple of the team.
- 10:37They said, how are you feeling?
- 10:39And I just started laughing and they said, why?
- 10:43What's happened?
- 10:44And I went.
- 10:46If I tell you the journey that I've had just now, you'd probably tell
- 10:50me to go away and just say, shut up.
- 10:52That's not true.
- 10:54Um, and we just all had a laugh, uh, over dinner and a drink over it.
- 10:57So that has been, I think, the most, um, in terms of funny travel stories.
- 11:05Uh, the, there was also one in 2020.
- 11:10I'm just trying to think now.
- 11:12Uh, 2023, I was due to go over to the Bahrain International Carting circuit,
- 11:17uh, for work for Rotax, and I get a phone call the week before I'm due to fly.
- 11:23Oh, uh, what's your availability like?
- 11:25And it was the dates for the week after and I said, well,
- 11:27you realize I'm in Bahrain.
- 11:29Um, so then.
- 11:32Uh, the deal, the, the agreement was made pretty, pretty quickly within
- 11:3648 hours of the initial discussion.
- 11:39And then I remember having to wait three hours because the flight
- 11:43for, for British Airways to London, Heathrow from Bahrain was delayed.
- 11:47So there I was on my smartphone watching Motorsport TV for about three hours
- 11:51waiting until I could check my bag in.
- 11:54But the, the, the recent travel to, to Belgium, I think is
- 11:57the worst sort of problematic.
- 12:01Journey, but you just have to, it's, it comes with the territory.
- 12:05It's first world problems as the hashtag suggests.
- 12:09Um, and it is what it is.
- 12:11It's just part and parcel of it.
- 12:12You just have to roll with punches.
- 12:13And if you're gonna be running a little bit behind you just tell the organizers
- 12:16saying, look, this is the situation.
- 12:18I'll be with you soon as I can.
- 12:20Mm-hmm.
- 12:22Well, we got a really, uh, busy life and a lot of adventures in it.
- 12:27Definitely.
- 12:28Yes, that's, that.
- 12:30That's very, very true, Lou.
- 12:31I mean, um, yeah, it's 43 flights last year, I think already we're,
- 12:37we're now what coming up to.
- 12:40I've got three.
- 12:40Oh, well, um, just for you folks out there that do follow me on socials,
- 12:45I've got Super GT Motorsport TV for Saturday and Sunday, Porsche Switzerland,
- 12:52Saturday all day Dutch, uh, Dutch karting championship season over the in Bergham.
- 12:58So I think probably by the time I get home at about midnight on Monday morning,
- 13:04I'll have done just 5,000 kilometers worth of traveling alone that weekend.
- 13:11So, yeah, it's really hard to be a commentator for motor sports events.
- 13:16Definitely.
- 13:17Yeah.
- 13:17It, it, it is, especially when you are, you are one person that's, uh, in demand.
- 13:22I mean, especially with the, uh, the carting because the week
- 13:25next weekend I do the first round of the German car championship.
- 13:28Fun enough, inbo, which means I've got flights of Brussels again.
- 13:31Mm-hmm.
- 13:31Heath.
- 13:32Don't let me down.
- 13:33Please don't let me down.
- 13:35So it's, it's the case.
- 13:37You have to be on a bit of a wing and a prayer.
- 13:39Like I say, Lou, it's just, um, you roll with the punches, but there's, apart
- 13:43from the travel, there's just so much more involved in, in being a commentator.
- 13:47You are, you are constantly researching and like, like for
- 13:50instance, this is my Bible.
- 13:53This goes everywhere with me and it's got all my notes that I've spent the last.
- 13:59Like literally entry.
- 14:00Well, from, from what people can see, there's like entry lists.
- 14:04I've got notes underneath.
- 14:05Mm-hmm.
- 14:05I've got track maps, um, championship standings.
- 14:10Like literally that has taken me multiple conversations to sort out, because people
- 14:17might say, oh yeah, well, you know, all this information as a commentator.
- 14:21Yes, but you've got to be fully prepared.
- 14:24And if you can't get the information before the event, if you are there
- 14:28the day before or two days before, you can try and find the drivers,
- 14:32um, and speak to them and say, right.
- 14:35Okay.
- 14:35I dunno much about your past history.
- 14:37Can you tell me a little bit about yourself in the next couple of minutes?
- 14:41And then what you also need.
- 14:46A good old note because, well, just in case with a pen.
- 14:49I mean, I never go, I never leave home with any, without any of that.
- 14:52It's just, um, part and parcel of of, of being in this industry.
- 15:00You know, definitely if you got different events, like you said, you got Porsche,
- 15:04you got carting and, uh, different drivers completely in this series.
- 15:09Uh, so you need to be up to date every time and yeah, that's good
- 15:13that you got this folder and you're well prepared every time.
- 15:17That's great.
- 15:18Uh, can you tell me what's your favorite, uh, part about, uh, mentating
- 15:23outside of, uh, travels, some funny, uh, situations which happened with you?
- 15:28Um, to be honest with you, I think the, one of the biggest things for me is.
- 15:35When you travel, uh, this is aligned with the travel side of it.
- 15:38When you meet people in the paddock and you get to know not just the
- 15:42driver, but you get to meet the people that work with the driver, like
- 15:46the engineer, the mechanic mm-hmm.
- 15:48The team boss.
- 15:49You get to, you get to spend time with people.
- 15:53And uh, that's the thing, as a commentator, you are the person
- 15:57that is the voice of that.
- 15:58Championship or one of the voices of that championship.
- 16:01So you've got to be a little bit, uh, on the mic.
- 16:04You could be a bit more of an extrovert, a bit more outgoing with your personality.
- 16:09Uh, but you've got to be that people person.
- 16:12You've gotta be that, you know, professional, but you still have
- 16:17that positive mental attitude.
- 16:19And, and that's one of the biggest things that I love about real life motor sport.
- 16:23Um.
- 16:24Is the, the, the, the people that you work with as part of the
- 16:29organization, the people that you meet.
- 16:32And it's not just the teams and the drivers, it's also the families.
- 16:35Mm-hmm.
- 16:35You know, let's say younger sister, younger brother, elder sister, elder
- 16:39brother, mum, dad, grandparents.
- 16:42Um, I've, I've had it where four generations were in the
- 16:47same paddock at one time.
- 16:48So you had daughter mm-hmm.
- 16:51Racing driver, mom.
- 16:54Grandmother.
- 16:55And then because of the, well, because of the, the genetics in the
- 17:00family, from what I was told, the great grandmother was there as well.
- 17:03Wow.
- 17:04Uh, which was, which was mind blowing.
- 17:08Um, but it's, it's more the case of it is about the people and it is about the,
- 17:15you know, when everything's calmed down on the track loop, it's more the case of,
- 17:18it's the, the ambiance, the atmosphere.
- 17:21Like everyone has just gone.
- 17:23Right, the racing's done.
- 17:26Time to chill out, get to know people.
- 17:30Uh, and there's been times when families or teams have invited me out for
- 17:34dinner and I've accepted because I.
- 17:37You wanna make sure that, okay, yes, people might say, well, you
- 17:41are, you might just be freeloading.
- 17:42No, it's, it's about the spirits of community.
- 17:46And it doesn't matter whether it's sim racing or real life, there is a
- 17:51big community aspect about what we do.
- 17:55And you cannot, you cannot deny that because we're all
- 17:59part of the human condition.
- 18:01Yeah, that's really true.
- 18:02So this is exactly what I really like about sim racing and, uh,
- 18:07doing my streams on Twitch, uh, and I racing community as well.
- 18:11That's all about people who into this industry and, uh, all my streams also,
- 18:16I'm all the time happy to see them and, uh, they all got, uh, different stories
- 18:21in their lives, but we connect here, uh, with some racing with, uh, streams
- 18:26and, and that's a really good thing.
- 18:28Definitely.
- 18:29Um.
- 18:30Do you have a race, uh, which, uh, you've called that you will never
- 18:34forget in your, uh, commentary career?
- 18:38Um, well, as the surname suggests, ladies and gentlemen, I act, I'm
- 18:42actually, uh, I'm part German by descent.
- 18:44Uh, my grandfather was born in the suburbs of Bergen, Berlin, uh, not too far away
- 18:51from the Alexander Platz and the Belling Temple Health Airport, which is now,
- 18:55uh, used predominantly for Formula E.
- 18:59Uh, 2023, uh, I was the circuit commentator for the circuit experience
- 19:04for Formula E for that round of the championship and completely in German.
- 19:09I was commentating the whole weekend on every free practice session, qualifying
- 19:13and both races, and just to think that, um, I was only 25 minutes away by taxi.
- 19:22From the place where my grandfather was born was quite a seminal
- 19:25and quite an emotional moment.
- 19:26Luke and I remember our broadcast director, uh, Del Brown, he
- 19:32said, Alex, for the final time this weekend, well done.
- 19:36You may stand down.
- 19:38So, um, I, uh, I, I basically, I cried by I, my tear ducks
- 19:45dry for about five minutes.
- 19:47Mm-hmm.
- 19:47Just because of the realization of how.
- 19:52From my grandfather Habb, who passed away when I was five.
- 19:57He legally immigrated to the United Kingdom before the Second World War and
- 20:03had to go to the local constabulary in London every six months with a document
- 20:06called the Aliens Order, where they would interview him, ask him where he
- 20:10is been, what he is been doing, and then they would stamp the book and say, okay,
- 20:13you're good for another six months.
- 20:16And to have that.
- 20:19Where you've got grandfather to father to son, uh, to son.
- 20:22Mm-hmm.
- 20:22And having that sort of full circle, I, I got really emotional and like people
- 20:27could see that my eyes were like red.
- 20:30Mm-hmm.
- 20:30Not, not on the pupils or anything, but like the, like my tear ducts
- 20:34were dry, my face was bright red and they, they, they wondered why.
- 20:39And so I told them and they went, that's just really, really awesome.
- 20:43And it, and it was quite nice because, um, I. Oh God.
- 20:47Yeah.
- 20:47Now, now I've reminded myself of another bad journey home and it was funny enough,
- 20:51it was that weekend, but, uh, I'll give you the version of that in a second.
- 20:55But it was, it was just like.
- 20:57People connected on that emotional level.
- 20:59Mm-hmm.
- 21:00And, and that again, goes to that community side of things.
- 21:04But that weekend, Berlin had an air, uh, had a airport
- 21:07strike at Berlin Brandenburg.
- 21:09So I had to take the train to Hamburg, got delayed by an hour and half,
- 21:14leaving Ha Hamburg hub, bun Hor, got to the hotel at one in the morning,
- 21:18thought okay, his flight's at six 30.
- 21:20I'll get up at, I'll get up at like four 30 and have a shower.
- 21:24My alarm woke me up at five o'clock and I just went.
- 21:27Ah, I've gotta get through security and I made it by last call.
- 21:30Uh, and then I was quite happy to get back to home, uh, to UK soil at
- 21:35London Gatwick, even though I'd flown from E. But yeah, it, it that, that to
- 21:40me, um, is the most emotional moment.
- 21:43I will, I. Never forget at all.
- 21:46Mm-hmm.
- 21:47Yeah, I think it, it's really good to, you know, return back to places, uh,
- 21:51would give you some emotions and you share this emotions with other people.
- 21:55And also that makes, uh, like easier situation by the end, uh, for you.
- 22:01So it's really cool.
- 22:01Mm-hmm.
- 22:02Definitely.
- 22:03Um, let's pick about, uh, formal EA little bit so I know that you're
- 22:08doing some commentary on them.
- 22:10Um, so tell me more about this.
- 22:14Well, it was, um, I. It was, uh, I'm, I'm part of the Loudspeaker Agency, which is
- 22:19run by Gemma Scott and Louise Beckett.
- 22:21Two women that have made their careers as presenters and pit lane reporters
- 22:25in Motorsport most nightly GT World Challenge, powered by AWS for Gemma.
- 22:29And Louise Beckett was the Pit Lane report and for the World Endurance
- 22:32Championship, uh, for the World Feed, um, for many, many years.
- 22:36And, um, about five years ago, uh, they set up a loudspeaker agency, which is to
- 22:43help other talent get the opportunity.
- 22:46To, uh, commentate or present or be involved within, not just
- 22:51Motorsport, but other sports beside it.
- 22:53'cause some of the commentators that I know, such as Chris McCarthy,
- 22:57who's just become the, uh, world Feed commentator for FIA Formula two,
- 23:01following in the footsteps of Alex Jakes.
- 23:04Um, Chris was their first ever client, and I've known Chris since 2017.
- 23:09He was the one that gave me my start in this business as a commentator.
- 23:13Um.
- 23:14Ha records racing saying that's convenient.
- 23:16I'm heading to Miami.
- 23:17Yeah.
- 23:18Miami on Saturday for Formula E. Have to give a shout out to my
- 23:21good buddy who's now the World Feed commentator, Tom Brooks.
- 23:24Um, it's quite funny how a lot of people that I know in the industry
- 23:28that are going, you know, that are making these stride strides forward,
- 23:33are now getting that recognition.
- 23:36Um, so for me, I, I just was, uh, I got contacted by Gemma,
- 23:40I think it was late 2020.
- 23:41Two or early 2023 and she said, you, you are being shortlisted
- 23:46for the Formula E gig in Berlin.
- 23:48Two weeks before the event I got the call, I was, uh, sitting down having dinner
- 23:52with my family and I've seen her number and I've gone, I need to answer this.
- 23:56And they said, is it what we think it is?
- 23:58I said, now we find out.
- 24:00So I walked away from the table and she said, yeah, you got the gig.
- 24:03Mm-hmm.
- 24:03It's the only time I've done for me to read commentary, but um.
- 24:07One of the funniest things, one of the funniest stories there, I got
- 24:10the brightest, um, you know, like where you get these mo, you know,
- 24:15these really, really brightly colored like, uh, Caribbean style hoodies.
- 24:20Well, I had the one that maybe looked like I'd come from Barbados
- 24:23only and needed a tan on my face and it had formulary and pink letters.
- 24:27And one of the things that was happening was that after qualifying one of the
- 24:32presenters, either Toby or Kayana would come into the, the Porter cabin.
- 24:37Which is literally just off the start, finish rate and asked me, well,
- 24:41you know, what a great qualifying, and then I was getting, I was, I'd
- 24:44like, I'd become a mini celebrity.
- 24:46I was like, thinking why are, why aren't people in, uh, interested in,
- 24:50you know, like say Nico Miller or maybe even Daniel Apt, who is mm-hmm
- 24:55testing the new Gen three car I said.
- 24:57Why am I getting, uh, and then I end up on someone's Instagram story and
- 25:01my picture with them is above Daniel, uh, Danny Fiat of all people mm-hmm.
- 25:06Who was doing the young driver test the following week in Berlin.
- 25:08And I was like, thinking.
- 25:11This is really, really crazy.
- 25:13And then the amount of comments for people that had actually been there either on
- 25:17the Saturday or the Sunday, they either messaged me personally and said, thanks
- 25:20for, thanks for doing such a great job.
- 25:22Really enjoyed your commentary.
- 25:24Hopefully you're back next year.
- 25:26Unfortunately it didn't happen.
- 25:27Um, but you know, you have to take these opportunities whilst you get the chance.
- 25:33Yeah, sure.
- 25:33I, I think that was great experience for you anyway.
- 25:36And, uh, would like to ask you, because you mentioned, uh, before that you
- 25:41like about racing and motorsport, the sound of engine and all this stuff.
- 25:46So what do you think overall about, uh, electric racing and, uh, we
- 25:51would have a future and maybe we'll go on to see like more serious, uh.
- 25:55Like this.
- 25:57Well, based on 25 years of automotive experience, I was in the auto
- 26:01industry until September 1st, 2020.
- 26:04I think electric is part of the future.
- 26:07It is not the complete solution.
- 26:10Uh, you're seeing championships like DTM, uh, super, GT over in
- 26:14Japan, rot on sustainable fuels, you know, so they're using these CNFs,
- 26:18which are carbon neutral fuels.
- 26:20You are seeing total energies.
- 26:22For instance, for the crowd, for, for the 24 hours of spa and for the world,
- 26:26you know, like part fuel partners are now going into sustainable fuels, like say
- 26:33Total energies for the 24 hours of Lamar.
- 26:37The, they, they did, they, they did something which I thought
- 26:40was quite quirky, but actually was a quite good marketing ploy.
- 26:44They did the total energies based their sustainable fuel
- 26:48on, uh, wine grape residues.
- 26:51Mm-hmm.
- 26:51And then they did, uh, then they had the 24 hours of Lamar Virtual powered
- 26:55by Total Energy Energies energy bars, which were made from the same residues.
- 27:02Mm-hmm.
- 27:02So you can see that how, uh, the, the technological advances we are, we.
- 27:09Uh, I'm looking at electric as a, as as a partial solution.
- 27:13Fuel cell technology is so underrated.
- 27:18It is obscene, uh, I mean like Hyundai with the IX 35 fuel cell
- 27:22vehicle back in late 2000 tens.
- 27:25Then they came out with the, the nexo, which was the second generation of it,
- 27:29BMW with the ix, uh, with the X five.
- 27:32They've had like multiple.
- 27:35Uh, hydrogen fuel cell cars being trialed by companies.
- 27:40Um, carbon neutral fuels definitely the way to go.
- 27:43If Porsche can set, spend over 150 million Euros mm-hmm.
- 27:47On a planted Chile to keep the nine 11 they halo car alive.
- 27:51Well, you could be damn sure that other fuel partners like,
- 27:55say, shell, like, say total.
- 27:58Um, so, you know, all the big brands I think have.
- 28:03You know, yes, they've drilled for so many years, but it's now, it's
- 28:07their time to help keep internal combustion engine cars on the road.
- 28:14We, it is.
- 28:15I think it's just that they're from when, like say people were
- 28:19saying we are gonna be net zero by.
- 28:23Formula.
- 28:23Formula One is a perfect example.
- 28:25They wanna be carbon neutral by 2030.
- 28:28Mm-hmm.
- 28:29Not all of their production team is on site at the circuits.
- 28:32They're located at FOM headquarters in Biggin Hill.
- 28:35Like say Chris McCarthy, Alex Brandle, some of the other commentators,
- 28:40they will go to Biggin Hill.
- 28:41They will not be flown on site because that CO2 being pumped into
- 28:46the air by more people flying.
- 28:49And it's easier on the environment.
- 28:52You know, a hundred percent sustainable fuels will be coming in I think for 2026.
- 28:56And now you are seeing a lot more motorsports are doing it.
- 29:00So if the motorsport industry can do it, why can't the automotive industry mm-hmm.
- 29:06See behind, see past the end of their, is my honest opinion as a, having been a
- 29:11professional, I saw so much technology.
- 29:14Like say when, if anyone might remember the old Mark four golf GT
- 29:17TDIs with, what was the Pomper Doer Direct injection diesel technology,
- 29:23which revolutionized the market.
- 29:25Um, that, that was, that was a, a fantastic technology.
- 29:30It's only Euro six emissions that basically said Volkswagen
- 29:33you can't do, or Euro five Volkswagen couldn't do it anymore.
- 29:36But I think it's, it's more the case of motorsport can
- 29:39lead the way for automotive.
- 29:40Mm-hmm.
- 29:41And we see that with the technological advances at the mall.
- 29:44Especially with the the LMDH cars, we now see there's a varying amount of solutions,
- 29:49different power plants, like a twin turbo V eight, and the Lamborghini squatter.
- 29:53Across the 63, you've got the four liter.
- 29:56Uh, now this is an interesting bit of information.
- 29:59I didn't know this until I found out about the spec of the car,
- 30:02the B-M-W-M-V eight hybrid.
- 30:05The engine that's in it is the original four liter V eight that's now got two
- 30:10turbo chargers on it, and it's the engine that powered the original returning
- 30:15BMWM three when BMW made its return to the DTM in the early 2000 and tens.
- 30:22So there are solutions to every problem and I, I think that these, you know,
- 30:27the governments in some respects have.
- 30:31Try to, try to look into their crystal ball that's obviously broken and go,
- 30:38well, okay, we, we need to make sure all cars are, you know, uh, all new cars are
- 30:43electrified, fully electrified by 2035.
- 30:47That will never happen.
- 30:48Mm-hmm.
- 30:48Because the amount of r and d, the amount of development, the time crunch
- 30:53that the, the manufacturers are under.
- 30:55You know, and that's why you are seeing Mercedes going away from the two
- 31:00liter four cylinder turbo charge C 63.
- 31:04They're bringing back the V eights.
- 31:06So you are now seeing that government, government forcing restrictions
- 31:10on manufacturers are hurting the reputations of said manufacturers.
- 31:15I don't, and.
- 31:17I'm glad that they are bringing back the v eights.
- 31:19It's what Falta bark is known for.
- 31:22So I think t the automotive industry with the help of their motorsport arms can
- 31:27really progress the technologies further.
- 31:30And if Motorsport can develop tech, uh, get like say l and DH cars on the road in
- 31:36a couple of years, who's not to say they can help accelerate the r and d programs.
- 31:41Of their automotive cousins, like say at Munich for BMW.
- 31:45Stu Guard for Mercedes-Benz.
- 31:47English stuff.
- 31:48For Audi and so on and so forth.
- 31:50There is a i I think that if you let the motor sport arms help the development
- 31:54race, we'd be along a lot better than we would be now at this point.
- 32:00Yeah, I think I agree with you because, uh, all the best technologies we can
- 32:04test like in motor sports and then apply them to, um, like normal cars and, uh,
- 32:11I kind of agree that uh, electric cars not only one solution so we can, um.
- 32:17Use different options, uh, for this to make mm-hmm.
- 32:20Environment better.
- 32:21And it's also to have, uh, like opportunity for people to choose,
- 32:26uh, what the best for them.
- 32:28Uh, because not, not really, uh, all people are crazy about all
- 32:32electric cars and, uh, they can be a little bit hard to travel, uh, by.
- 32:38Long distance.
- 32:40Uh, that's still a problem, I think.
- 32:42Uh, so yeah, I think that you, that you're on point with this.
- 32:47Definitely.
- 32:48I, I think also coming on to, you know, in some respects trying to,
- 32:54I. Look at my own carbon footprint.
- 32:57You know, I do.
- 32:57I uh, I do drive a lot.
- 32:59I do fly a lot, but most recently, um, I've actually been embracing using
- 33:05electric vehicles as higher cars.
- 33:07Um, when you've got, like, say the Polestar two, the Polestar three, you look
- 33:12at what BMW's now doing with the I five.
- 33:14Um, I, um.
- 33:17I think it was January, late January of this year, I was going to a
- 33:20carting event, and six actually also upgraded me for no additional cost.
- 33:25So I like books.
- 33:26Uh, I think it was the IX one, which is their entry level SUV electric vehicle.
- 33:31Mm-hmm.
- 33:31And then I'm waiting for, 'cause this, I think this is, yeah, this is
- 33:35another thing that happened this year.
- 33:37We had a problem where Belgian air traffic control was, uh, the compute,
- 33:40the main mainframe computer had, um.
- 33:43Bone gasket and shut down.
- 33:45So, uh, I looked and I ended up in A-B-M-W-I five E Drive 40
- 33:51M Sport Touring, which had 340 brake horsepower rear wheel drive.
- 33:58I. But it had a range of about 480 kilometers.
- 34:02Mm-hmm.
- 34:02Which, for a car that weighs nearly two tons is pretty good.
- 34:06I think it's just that when cars, like the Nissan Leaf came back, came out
- 34:11when Carlos go, was in charge of rental in Nissan and, and tried to spearhead
- 34:15the electric rev vehicle revolution.
- 34:18The technology wasn't at that point where we could say, yes, you can do 10 to 80%.
- 34:27In 20 minutes, and that will give you 300 kilometers of range, meaning
- 34:32that if you are 210 kilometers away, you know you've got that window.
- 34:36Mm-hmm.
- 34:36Back then, electric vehicles were probably, if you were lucky, getting
- 34:41a hundred, 110 kilometers from a full choice, full state of charge, which
- 34:46in my money is about 7 62 to 72 miles.
- 34:50Per, per full charge.
- 34:52But now the technology is accelerating to the point where Tesla is not
- 34:56gonna be the big power player.
- 34:58The, the automotive big brands are catching up.
- 35:02Mm-hmm.
- 35:02And it's just about finding all these alternatives.
- 35:05I think it's just, but I, and I actually enjoy, I'll be honest with
- 35:09you, I love any kind of motor sport.
- 35:12Even Formula E, when they went gen, now they've gone Gen four, four wheel drive.
- 35:18Can do nearly 200 plus miles an hour on a city street.
- 35:21Mm-hmm.
- 35:22Now you've captured my attention, but now I'm worried as sort like thinking.
- 35:26Does Formula E have to move away from city circuits?
- 35:30Uh, from City Street circuits to actual tracks?
- 35:33Um.
- 35:34That's the big hurdle that, that I think they've, they've gotta overcome
- 35:38extreme E the rally cross series has now become extreme HH standing for hydrogen.
- 35:44So there are people that are willing, like, uh, Alejandro a gag.
- 35:49He is the biggest catalyst.
- 35:51For this revolutionary change in motor sport.
- 35:54Mm-hmm.
- 35:54And when Lucas Degrassi was the first test, you know, Lucas Degrassi has
- 35:57been a part of Formula E from day one.
- 36:00He was the first employee that a gag wanted him on board.
- 36:04They knew each other very well, and people laughed at formulary.
- 36:09I don't see people laughing now.
- 36:10And now we're in, I think it's season 11 and they're off to Miami.
- 36:16It's, it's always about the doubt, the naysayers, and
- 36:19just carry on your own path.
- 36:21And that's exactly what Alejandro gag and so many other people have done.
- 36:26Yeah, definitely world, uh, changing and, uh, good alternatives to have.
- 36:31Uh, that's a great thing.
- 36:33Definitely.
- 36:34I also noticed that I, we, we got a lot of, uh, electric
- 36:37cars, uh, outside, uh, and um.
- 36:41It's, it's great.
- 36:42It's great.
- 36:43And, uh, good to see that formal e finally, um, you know, taken the
- 36:47reputation from people and people really enjoy, uh, racing this cars and that.
- 36:53That's great.
- 36:54Um, I really like about formal E. That's, uh, I think they running the same chassis.
- 36:59I really like series like this, uh, like IndyCar for example.
- 37:03Uh, because I think that drivers can show their skills, uh, here.
- 37:07Of course, formula One is good in its own way, uh, with all this, um, you know,
- 37:13fights between teams and, uh, engineers.
- 37:16It's really cool also.
- 37:17But, uh, as a driver, I really like Sirius, where you can
- 37:21show your driving skills.
- 37:25I, I, I think that's also another thing that, um, is very
- 37:29much overlooked these days.
- 37:31Um.
- 37:33It's just a case of, um, showcasing talent rather than needing a budget.
- 37:39Mm-hmm.
- 37:40Um, so it's, uh, it's just one of those things where I.
- 37:47You just have to sort of like, say back in the seventies, back in the eighties,
- 37:52drivers got drives because they, they earned it or they were picked up.
- 37:57Now it's all about academies.
- 37:59And I can understand motor sport is a business.
- 38:02We're in a very, very different time.
- 38:04Things have evolved so quickly.
- 38:07Um.
- 38:08And now I would rather see drivers given the benefit of the doubt through what
- 38:13they've achieved, rather than how much money they have to bring to the table.
- 38:18Yeah, absolutely Agree with you in this.
- 38:20And, uh, let's move on and speak about your own podcast.
- 38:24I know that you're doing it.
- 38:26Uh, so tell me more about, uh, how you want to start your own podcast.
- 38:31What actually lead you to this?
- 38:35Um, well, my podcast, uh, which is on my own YouTube channel,
- 38:38is called Commentators Corner.
- 38:40Uh, it's to give an insight of the personalities behind the people who
- 38:43have certain roles within the industry.
- 38:45So from commentators, presenters, uh, driver, coaches, drivers,
- 38:50uh, personalities, let's say.
- 38:53And it's more to, you know, uh, it's a bit of a, more of an
- 38:57anecdotal podcast, if you will.
- 39:00Um.
- 39:02And it's, it's about finding about characters, about people, um, talking
- 39:07about the community and talking funny stories going off on tangents.
- 39:11And I think the longest episode was with my good friend Adam Weller,
- 39:15which was about the best part of nearly two hours we were talking for.
- 39:19But it was one of those conversations where you just had to let it flow.
- 39:24Um, it is available on YouTube, so if you go to youtube.com at Alex Gold.
- 39:31You should find me.
- 39:32Um, and then it's available on, I'm now doing, uh, the vid, well, the video
- 39:37version is not only on YouTube, but now on Spotify, uh, it's on Apple Podcasts.
- 39:43And, um, I'm really enjoying doing something whereby I get to speak to
- 39:47people that I know or people who, I dunno in the industry, find out about them.
- 39:51A bit like what you people do here at, at eSports with the unit
- 39:55talks, it's really, really good to.
- 39:59Find out about, um, different personalities, different individuals.
- 40:05Yeah.
- 40:05That's, uh, why we got this, uh, podcast to show people who's
- 40:09in motor sports, uh, who can.
- 40:12Inspire people to jump into this industry and be a part of it.
- 40:16Definitely.
- 40:17Um, can you tell me what's different, uh, for you and
- 40:20what's the preparation for you?
- 40:22Um, like, uh, what's different, uh, with commentary and, uh, with podcasts?
- 40:27So, uh, what are you doing differently for this one podcast is basically let it flow.
- 40:34Just get the guest I, I, I think you can.
- 40:39You can have a set line of questioning, but it doesn't
- 40:42make the podcast feel natural.
- 40:43Mm-hmm.
- 40:44In my, in my eyes, I, I look at it rather than, rather than quantity.
- 40:48I look at qua quality and you're talking about the personality of the individual?
- 40:53Individual, sorry, trying to get my words out right.
- 40:56Sorry.
- 40:56I, I know, I know we're gonna be short on time in a second because I've got a
- 40:59sim racing broadcast to do very shortly.
- 41:02Um, but it's basically let the conversation flow, but
- 41:06with the commentary is.
- 41:07Have so much information that your mind is, uh, is swamped by it, but
- 41:14it helps you to do your job right.
- 41:17And it's a famous saying here in the United Kingdom, and I know
- 41:20quite a few people will, uh.
- 41:23Will, will definitely be on the, the, the same wavelength as me, which is called
- 41:28the seven Ps. Piss pull preparation promotes piss pull performance.
- 41:33And I stand by that mantra every single time because if I don't
- 41:37prepare, I don't feel I've done enough to make sure that my job is safe.
- 41:42Mm-hmm.
- 41:43Um, commentary is a cutthroat business.
- 41:46Um, a lot of us are, are good friends, but we are all out for a specific goal.
- 41:53Um, I look at my, my commentary career so far that I've, I, I've been very, very
- 42:01fortunate to work with some great people.
- 42:05I continue to work with some great people, and there's other people that I've, I've
- 42:09worked, I mean, I've got to know Steffi Bow really, really well, and I love her.
- 42:14You know, let's just roll with it.
- 42:16Um, and, and that's how my podcast is.
- 42:19It is basically on, it's now based more on her mantra of what she said to me,
- 42:24uh mm-hmm When we finally met in person.
- 42:26Hopefully, uh, uh, Steffi, we get to catch up very, very soon.
- 42:28So chow, uh, over to California.
- 42:32Um, it's more, it's more the case of the podcast needs to
- 42:36be a living, breathing entity.
- 42:39And if you strangle that with.
- 42:42Predetermined questions, which I did for the first 15 episodes, and I just went,
- 42:46it doesn't feel, you know, when you just get that, that, that feeling of the pit of
- 42:51your stomach where it doesn't feel right.
- 42:54Mm-hmm.
- 42:55And that's exactly what I felt.
- 42:57Um, there is one person that everyone will know in the sim racing
- 43:00commentary space, uh, George Morgan.
- 43:04Um, he's the only guest that I've interviewed twice, and it was mainly I
- 43:09wanted to, uh, I had a rebrand of the show, so new graphics, new look, and
- 43:15I thought, right, who can I bring on?
- 43:18That was one of my original guests, and we talk about what's changed
- 43:24since that interview and now mm-hmm.
- 43:27And George.
- 43:29Wonderful, wonderful guy.
- 43:32Absolutely passionate.
- 43:34Um, and he, he was up for it.
- 43:36And it was, it was, I mean, I looked back between after I'd recorded that
- 43:40episode, uploaded it, premiered it.
- 43:43I looked at the first episode and I just went, I.
- 43:46Just look how far you, Alex, not anybody else.
- 43:50You, through passion, through grit, determination, have managed to get
- 43:54this podcast to where it is now.
- 43:57Mm-hmm.
- 43:57And now I'm looking at thinking, okay, so I've done another further
- 44:01revision of the graphics that where I'm talking to my guests.
- 44:04Um, it just makes so much more sense.
- 44:07And I'm looking at other ways in which, okay.
- 44:10How can I, how can I change it up?
- 44:12And I'm, I love the format because it just means it's completely 100% natural.
- 44:19It's not forced, and it's my podcast.
- 44:22Mm-hmm.
- 44:23And no one can take that away from me, which is, which is
- 44:26one of the wonderful things.
- 44:28Yeah, that's, uh, good that you mentioned.
- 44:30You can have a look on yourself, uh, like on four first, uh, videos, which you made.
- 44:36And it's really cool opportunity actually to have, uh, because, uh, sometimes I
- 44:40watch my first dreams and also like, oh, you've come really long way to
- 44:45where you are now, so it's really cool.
- 44:49Yeah.
- 44:50Yeah, definitely.
- 44:51Uh, I, I couldn't agree more.
- 44:53And, um, yeah, I'm still, uh, still commentating on sim racing.
- 44:57Like I said, uh, in about 10 minutes time, I've got a bit, we're going
- 45:00live with the radicals at Suzuka.
- 45:03Mm-hmm.
- 45:03Um, as much as I'd love to continue this conversation, Lou, I think, uh, I need
- 45:08to skid out because, uh, my producer's call, uh, trying to call me as we speak.
- 45:12Bless him.
- 45:13Okay.
- 45:13But it's.
- 45:16I've got one bit of advice for you people out there that want to do commentary.
- 45:21Um, from my perspective, make sure that you work hard, but you enjoy every
- 45:27single step of the journey because if you don't enjoy it, you're gonna be
- 45:34basically falling flat on your face.
- 45:36If you don't have, you know, the, if you don't have the relevant.
- 45:42Know how, in how to get into this industry.
- 45:46Find one of us, talk to one of us, see how we can help.
- 45:51I've given, um, I mean as of you'll, you'll know this lady
- 45:56as well, Lou Ash, van Deley.
- 46:00She came to me and asked me for advice, which then led onto the
- 46:04SRO job in the United States.
- 46:07She came to me for a, for, and I said, Ash.
- 46:12If you know what you're worth, go and get what you're worth.
- 46:15It's like a famous saying from Rocky Balbo.
- 46:17From Rocky Balbo in one of his movies.
- 46:19And when you have to look at these monologues, they're
- 46:21actually quite powerful.
- 46:23But there's also a very, very interesting answer that David Croft
- 46:29lead commentator for Skyport F1, said to me when I interviewed him at
- 46:33the Autosport Show, which is never give anyone a reason to tell you no.
- 46:41He started from hospital radio, and now he's been in Formula One
- 46:44as the lead commentator for Sky Sports for the best part of over
- 46:47two decades alongside Martin Brule.
- 46:49And if that's not, uh, a way of saying, don't let people tell you no.
- 46:54Mm-hmm.
- 46:55David Croft is the epitome of that.
- 46:59Yeah, I think main thing, just to be passionate to what you're doing and uh,
- 47:04this is what will lead you and motivate you to go forward and improve, uh,
- 47:09like step by step and go to the future.
- 47:12Uh, so yeah.
- 47:14Yeah, ex exactly.
- 47:16Um, so really I have to say, Lou, it's been an absolute pleasure.
- 47:19Uh, Johnny you here on, on Init talks and, uh, yeah.
- 47:23Um, I'm.
- 47:25I'm just looking forward to what, not just in eSports, but also uh, screen to speed.
- 47:30Uh, it's gonna be doing obviously a lot coming up, uh, so I'll be keeping
- 47:33my eyes on it and, uh, don't worry, you've definitely got a cheerleader in
- 47:37this corner here in the United Kingdom.
- 47:40Okay, I'll thank you so much for being here.
- 47:42It was a pleasure to talk with you and, uh, also get a lot of, uh, new things.
- 47:46Uh, for myself.
