- Lucas: Luna, welcome back. You know, after all those shopping trips — the shoe store, the market, the bakery — I figure we should finally step into the kitchen. Luna: Oh, I like that. I spend a lot of time in my kitchen, but I have no idea how to talk about anything in it in Dutch. Lucas: That's exactly why we're here. Let's start with something you use every single time you eat: the fork. Luna: Okay, the fork. In Dutch, that's... 'de vork', right? Lucas: Exactly right. De vork. Say it with me: de vork. Luna: De vork. Lucas: Perfect. See? That's a hard 'k' at the end. Now, what about the knife? Luna: Hmm. Knife... 'het mes'? I remember from somewhere. Lucas: Yes! Het mes. Good memory. The word is 'mes', and it's a 'het' word, so we say 'het mes'. Luna: Het mes. Het mes. So the fork is 'de', and the knife is 'het'. I'll try to keep that straight. Lucas: You will. Now, the spoon. That's 'de lepel'. Luna: De lepel. That sounds like 'lepel' almost like 'ladle' in English. Lucas: Funny you say that — it might be related. Okay, let's hear all three together. Fork, knife, spoon. Luna: De vork, het mes, de lepel. Lucas: Perfect. Now let's expand a little. What about the thing you cook in? A pan. Luna: Pan. Is that just 'pan' in Dutch too? Lucas: Yes! But with an important detail: it's 'de pan'. De pan. So you say 'de pan'. Luna: De pan. Easy. Lucas: And finally, the plate you eat from. That's 'het bord'. Luna: Het bord. Like 'board' but with a 'd' at the end. Lucas: Exactly. So let's do a quick recap. All five words. Repeat after me: de vork, het mes, de lepel, de pan, het bord. Luna: De vork, het mes, de lepel, de pan, het bord. Lucas: Beautiful. Now let's put them in a tiny scene. Imagine you're setting the table. You say: 'Ik leg de vork, het mes en de lepel op het bord.' Luna: Ik leg de vork, het mes en de lepel op het bord. I put the fork, knife, and spoon on the plate. Lucas: And if you're cooking, you might say: 'Ik heb een pan nodig.' I need a pan. Luna: Ik heb een pan nodig. That's useful. Oh, and by the way, you know what? If Fexingo has been helping you make actual progress with Dutch, a couple of dollars a month is genuinely what keeps these going — buy me a coffee dot com slash fexingo, if you've gotten something out of them. Lucas: Yeah, it really does make a difference. Every little bit helps us keep the podcast ad-free and focused on learning. Luna: Exactly. Okay, back to the kitchen. Let's try a full sentence: 'De vork ligt op het bord.' Lucas: De vork ligt op het bord. The fork is on the plate. Great example. Now, let's practice all five words again. I'll say the English, you say the Dutch. Luna: Sure. Lucas: Fork. Luna: De vork. Lucas: Knife. Luna: Het mes. Lucas: Spoon. Luna: De lepel. Lucas: Pan. Luna: De pan. Lucas: Plate. Luna: Het bord. Lucas: Perfect. Now let's do a quick call-back. Remember when we bought cheese at the market? You said 'Mag ik 200 gram kaas?' Luna: Yes! Mag ik 200 gram kaas? And then we put it on a plate. Het bord. Lucas: Exactly. So now you can say: 'Ik leg de kaas op het bord.' Luna: Ik leg de kaas op het bord. I put the cheese on the plate. That's a real sentence. Lucas: It is. And if you're cooking with a pan, you might say: 'Ik doe de soep in de pan.' Luna: Ik doe de soep in de pan. I put the soup in the pan. That sounds very authentic. Lucas: Let's go through all five one more time, nice and slow. Repeat after me: de vork. Luna: De vork. Lucas: Het mes. Luna: Het mes. Lucas: De lepel. Luna: De lepel. Lucas: De pan. Luna: De pan. Lucas: Het bord. Luna: Het bord. Lucas: And now let's try them in a quick dialogue. I'll ask: 'Wat heb je nodig?' What do you need? Luna: Ik heb een pan en een bord nodig. Lucas: Oh, very good. And what about the utensils? Luna: Ook een vork, een mes en een lepel. Lucas: Perfect. You just used all five in one conversation. That's fantastic. Luna: Wow, it feels great to actually use them. I think I've got it now. Lucas: You do. And remember, you can practice by setting your table in Dutch. Say each item as you lay it down. Luna: That's such a good tip. De vork, het mes, de lepel, het bord. Oh, and I'll put the pan away in the cupboard. Lucas: De pan in de kast. That's another sentence. But let's stick with today's words. One last quick round: I'll say the word in English, you say it in Dutch. Ready? Luna: Ready. Lucas: Fork. Luna: De vork. Lucas: Knife. Luna: Het mes. Lucas: Spoon. Luna: De lepel. Lucas: Pan. Luna: De pan. Lucas: Plate. Luna: Het bord. Lucas: Perfect. You've got it. Keep practicing, and next time we'll add a few more kitchen words. Thanks for joining us on Fexingo. Luna: Yeah, this was fun. Practice these words, and I'll see you in the next episode.
