- 2:04Speaker 2: you hired that look perfect on paper but turned out
- 2:07Speaker 2: to be a walking disaster. Uh, you know the missed
- 2:10Speaker 2: background check that blew up in your face.
- 2:12Speaker 4: Or you know the cuddling wasn't nustling cat?
- 2:17Speaker 5: Yeah, every episode till we finished, Yeah, we.
- 2:21Speaker 2: Find somebody who the shirtless nestling cat. Yeah, teams called
- 2:27Speaker 2: the person who slipped past the background check with a
- 2:29Speaker 2: surprise sister, or that hire who costs the company way
- 2:32Speaker 2: too much money. Happens too too often. And yes, we'll
- 2:35Speaker 2: change the names of the of of the folks. You
- 2:38Speaker 2: can surely change the names of who you're talking about
- 2:40Speaker 2: in the company. I will keep it anonymous. So that's
- 2:43Speaker 2: that's cool.
- 2:44Speaker 5: Want to really.
- 2:46Speaker 3: The team, Yeah.
- 2:48Speaker 4: But surely give us juicy details, spill the tea. Yeah.
- 2:52Speaker 3: Plus we do what well. Plus we're having people on
- 2:55Speaker 3: like if you're if you want to come on the podcast,
- 2:57Speaker 3: tell your story? Yeah, great story.
- 2:59Speaker 2: Yeah if you if you submit a story and it's awesome,

- 3:05Speaker 2: come on the show and tell your story, and then
- 3:08Speaker 2: you know, maybe read some other ones.
- 3:09Speaker 4: That'd be cool too.
- 3:09Speaker 2: We'd love to we'd love to have some great guests
- 3:12Speaker 2: that have have had some bad hire fails and you know,
- 3:14Speaker 2: really folks who are having huge successes too. You know,
- 3:17Speaker 2: we we talked about this last episode. You know it's
- 3:20Speaker 2: we we we talk about bad hires because we spend
- 3:23Speaker 2: all of our time trying.
- 3:24Speaker 4: To prevent them.
- 3:24Speaker 3: Yeah, and uh, and.
- 3:26Speaker 2: So do all these folks in recruiting and CEOs and
- 3:29Speaker 2: people who care about talent trying to find really great people,
- 3:33Speaker 2: and but bad hires happen, and uh, you know, we
- 3:35Speaker 2: we we literally go to work every day giving people
- 3:38Speaker 2: the tools to make great hires, but they do happen
- 3:42Speaker 2: and and so oftentimes it leads to tough consequences, and
- 3:46Speaker 2: so we just tell stories about them and and remind.
- 3:49Speaker 4: People that make you know the next time you make
- 3:51Speaker 4: a bad hire.
- 3:52Speaker 2: Uh, you know, it's not the end of the world,
- 3:55Speaker 2: but you know there's things you can do to prevent it.
- 3:57Speaker 3: So it's funny when it's not your company. That's what
- 4:00Speaker 3: we tell them. Yeah, if it was all about.
- 4:03Speaker 4: And it's funny afterwards, maybe, you know, maybe depending on
- 4:06Speaker 4: how bad it is. Yeah, I mean I talk to
- 4:10Speaker 4: recruiters all the time. Sometimes you know, it's just learning.
- 4:13Speaker 2: You know, you learn well, you know you should have
- 4:16Speaker 2: picked up there were some red flags or something you
- 4:17Speaker 2: should have picked up on.
- 4:18Speaker 3: And sometimes it's a freak accident like last episode, somebody
- 4:22Speaker 3: attacked by a squirrel, you know. So, I mean, I
- 4:25Speaker 3: don't know, it could happen to anybody. It's funny and
- 4:28Speaker 3: telling up to see you.
- 4:29Speaker 5: I don't work because of a squirrel attack. I want
- 4:32Speaker 5: to get mine.
- 4:35Speaker 6: Don't use that one on kids.
- 4:36Speaker 2: All right, here we go, so I'll start here. I
- 4:40Speaker 2: haven't read these, so these are this is my first time.
- 4:43Speaker 3: Yes, good good luckly stories.
- 4:45Speaker 4: So I worked with special needs kids. I don't even
- 4:48Speaker 4: like the way that starts. So I worked with special
- 4:50Speaker 4: needs kids.
- 4:50Speaker 2: We heard someone said to one of the kids, if
- 4:53Speaker 2: you don't shut up, I'll cut your tongue off. And okay,
- 4:59Speaker 2: this is really bad. It was apparently the guy's first
- 5:03Speaker 2: day on the job.
- 5:04Speaker 5: He said that to the kid. Apparently, so on the
- 5:08Speaker 5: first day.
- 5:10Speaker 3: Oh my gosh, did he have a background check. I
- 5:15Speaker 3: just don't understand.
- 5:17Speaker 2: Yeah, that's it, just it was the guy's first life.
- 5:20Speaker 2: I'm assuming first and last day. But you know, in
- 5:24Speaker 2: all these companies with vulnerable populations, there's like people who
- 5:27Speaker 2: serve kids and and patients just super super sharp, really
- 5:32Speaker 2: tough vetting has to happen.
- 5:35Speaker 4: You got it.
- 5:35Speaker 2: You gotta run, you know, super in depth background checks.
- 5:38Speaker 2: But it's just not worth it.
- 5:39Speaker 3: Like we'll come across companies who just don't have any
- 5:42Speaker 3: kind of screen process at all. Like we'll learn like, oh, yeah,
- 5:45Speaker 3: we hire hundreds of people a year whatever how many
- 5:48Speaker 3: people and there's no vetting at all. Just whoever, in
- 5:51Speaker 3: especially when it's working with kids, working with people like that,
- 5:53Speaker 3: that's insane.
- 5:55Speaker 2: Yeah, you know a lot of times the the folks
- 5:58Speaker 2: who are responsible for her, and it's esp Actually, some
- 6:00Speaker 2: of the smaller organizations that do big.
- 6:02Speaker 4: Care and things like that, even home health.
- 6:04Speaker 2: Care for elderly is they become smaller companies and they're
- 6:10Speaker 2: less sophisticated and how they think and know about background checks.
- 6:13Speaker 2: And it's really really tough because then you know they
- 6:17Speaker 2: don't know, you know that they're not screening well, you know,
- 6:22Speaker 2: somebody sold them something told them it was great, and
- 6:24Speaker 2: they don't have any idea, and so you know, certainly
- 6:28Speaker 2: encourage folks to.
- 6:29Speaker 4: Yeah, it's one of the reasons I started that that course.
- 6:32Speaker 2: Our masterclass was to masterclass on it was to just
- 6:35Speaker 2: make people smarter, because you got to be you gotta
- 6:37Speaker 2: be smart when it comes to this background screening. All right,
- 6:39Speaker 2: here's another one. I hope this one doesn't hurt my
- 6:42Speaker 2: heart as much as the last one. I worked in
- 6:45Speaker 2: a university library. They hired a new librarian to manage
- 6:49Speaker 2: the cataloging department. Apparently, he sat in his office for
- 6:53Speaker 2: his ninety day probation period and did nothing, not one thing.
- 7:00Speaker 2: He played on his computer all day. There were piles
- 7:03Speaker 2: of books all around his desk that had never been touched.
- 7:06Speaker 2: He was a brand new grad with a fresh master's degree.
- 7:10Speaker 2: He refused to leave the building when he was fired,
- 7:13Speaker 2: and campus police had to escort him out. He torched
- 7:17Speaker 2: his entire career in ninety days.
- 7:21Speaker 3: So he spent ninety days doing nothing, and they're like
- 7:23Speaker 3: it's time to leave. It's like, I'm not leaving. I
- 7:25Speaker 3: got my games to play. So that that's the whole story.
- 7:28Speaker 4: I stayed ninety one. It's too late.
- 7:29Speaker 3: Yeah, that's right. I passed my ninety days. I'm in Yeah,
- 7:32Speaker 3: that's crazy.
- 7:33Speaker 7: I know, the ninety days where you're supposed to impress
- 7:36Speaker 7: your employer, like not just screw it all up.
- 7:39Speaker 2: Yeah yeah, yeah, I'm just shocked that d would like
- 7:44Speaker 2: get out of grad school and like you just should
- 7:46Speaker 2: be like super eager to go.
- 7:47Speaker 3: Crushing to go, crush hard, worked hard in college, worked hard,
- 7:50Speaker 3: and for his masters, he gets into his jobs like
- 7:53Speaker 3: time to relax, professional student.
- 7:56Speaker 5: Did nobody notice.
- 8:01Speaker 4: Like how do you how do you make it ninety days?
- 8:04Speaker 3: Yeah, you're done. That's a long time. I mean think
- 8:06Speaker 3: about day forty five. If somebody would have said.
- 8:08Speaker 5: Something, yeah, well maybe they didn't do an education clarification.
- 8:15Speaker 4: Apparently is apparently at Master.
- 8:19Speaker 3: Made the holding up.
- 8:20Speaker 2: Well, you know again, it's not sometimes just not about
- 8:23Speaker 2: skills or the degree. You know, a lot of times
- 8:25Speaker 2: it's about you know, the soft skills or you know,
- 8:29Speaker 2: the type of person you are that makes that decides
- 8:32Speaker 2: whether or not you're going to be a great employee.
- 8:35Speaker 6: You know.
- 8:36Speaker 2: I love talking to recruiters and how they how they
- 8:39Speaker 2: ask questions and and interview folks to try to tease
- 8:42Speaker 2: that out of people and get that information from them
- 8:44Speaker 2: so they can try to make an assessment, you know,
- 8:47Speaker 2: because it's easy to assess skills, that's super that's that's
- 8:50Speaker 2: that's super easy. Harder harder to do. It's harder to
- 8:52Speaker 2: find the hard stuff that really creates a lot of
- 8:55Speaker 2: the problems that we read about in these bad hearts.
- 8:58Speaker 2: All right, another here, I'm a cant. I had a
- 9:01Speaker 2: candidate running late for an interview, parked in the Employee
- 9:06Speaker 2: of the Month parking space.
- 9:08Speaker 3: Give it to himself, that's me.
- 9:12Speaker 2: As the employee was returning to lunch, she ended up
- 9:15Speaker 2: in a fistfight in the parking.
- 9:17Speaker 3: That's my spot. Which one? Which one is the bad high?
- 9:23Speaker 6: Yeah?
- 9:24Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 9:24Speaker 6: Is it?
- 9:24Speaker 5: The current best employee of the month or is it
- 9:26Speaker 5: the new one?
- 9:27Speaker 3: Right I should be employe of the month.
- 9:30Speaker 4: I don't know.
- 9:30Speaker 2: If I if I had an employee the month who
- 9:32Speaker 2: ran into a potential new hire and they're like, I
- 9:35Speaker 2: just couldn't find a parking space. I was running late,
- 9:36Speaker 2: I would hope that, like my employee the month would
- 9:39Speaker 2: be like rock on, it's okay, it's totally good, let's
- 9:41Speaker 2: get you in here. Scrap like, ay, bro, that's my spot.
- 9:47Speaker 4: You know. That's kind of like the opposite reaction I
- 9:50Speaker 4: would want.
- 9:52Speaker 3: I just thought it was first come, first served, Like, oh,
- 9:54Speaker 3: whoever gets this spot first, they're the employee of the
- 9:56Speaker 3: month music, Yeah I win.
- 10:03Speaker 2: Speaking of fist fights, another one. Okay, I worked in retail.
- 10:08Speaker 2: I watched someone get hired for I watched someone get
- 10:12Speaker 2: hired for back room, come to orientation, come to orientation,
- 10:17Speaker 2: go outside on a smoke break, and immediately threaten someone
- 10:21Speaker 2: with their new box cutter.
- 10:26Speaker 5: Well, that's worse than what could happen.
- 10:28Speaker 2: What could happen on a smoke break that makes you
- 10:30Speaker 2: want to Yeah all right? They got taken out of
- 10:33Speaker 2: the store and cuffs and didn't even make it to
- 10:36Speaker 2: lunch on their first day.
- 10:39Speaker 3: It's always first days.
- 10:40Speaker 5: Yeah, first day.
- 10:43Speaker 3: At least they found the problems early on. He couldn't
- 10:45Speaker 3: give me.
- 10:46Speaker 4: This is the ones that people write about more. You know.
- 10:48Speaker 2: Others are like slow, slow burn bad hires.
- 10:54Speaker 4: That's what it was.
- 10:55Speaker 5: I cut somebody that's crazy. Let me use your lighter.
- 10:59Speaker 6: Not okay, nah, not even fight box better fight.
- 11:07Speaker 4: I think it's worse. Yeah, that's kind of worse than
- 11:11Speaker 4: I don't. I don't know.
- 11:12Speaker 2: Maybe that maybe my employee of the month out there
- 11:14Speaker 2: going to fist fight the parking lot over someone that
- 11:16Speaker 2: I don't know, box cutter. Okay, last last one here.
- 11:19Speaker 2: We we hired and fired a manager under two weeks
- 11:24Speaker 2: because his linked.
- 11:25Speaker 3: Long what they made a little bit longer.
- 11:28Speaker 2: Than yeah, well yeah, because his LinkedIn profile was public
- 11:34Speaker 2: and he was actively commenting on multiple posts about how
- 11:38Speaker 2: he was still looking for a job. Oh yeah, and
- 11:41Speaker 2: it only taking this one for temporary benefits to hold
- 11:45Speaker 2: him over until he found a better one.
- 11:47Speaker 3: So we're seeing that much detail in his comments. So
- 11:51Speaker 3: I'm just like, hey, I'm looking for the.
- 11:52Speaker 2: Job, and also I'm going to start actively monitoring the
- 11:55Speaker 2: LinkedIn of everyone we hire, at least for two weeks afterwards.
- 11:58Speaker 3: I don't understand that because I'll see on link then
- 12:00Speaker 3: people will be in a job and they have like
- 12:03Speaker 3: their open to work thing, like yeah, yeah, I'm actively
- 12:06Speaker 3: looking to get out of this job right now, and
- 12:08Speaker 3: it's like.
- 12:09Speaker 6: Your boss, I'm working, but I'm also open to work.
- 12:12Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 12:13Speaker 2: Well you know, I think, well, it's every it's every
- 12:15Speaker 2: company's responsibility to make to create an environment where people
- 12:20Speaker 2: want to work there.
- 12:21Speaker 6: Right be where I'm close to quitting. I might be
- 12:25Speaker 6: quitting in the next.
- 12:27Speaker 4: Oh you're saying that. Are you saying that to me? Okay?
- 12:32Speaker 3: That was the.
- 12:33Speaker 4: Seriously, everyone just got quiet as them.
- 12:38Speaker 6: I announced sas is not say open to work. I'm
- 12:42Speaker 6: just assuming that if someone did say that that, they're like,
- 12:48Speaker 6: I might be quitting soon.
- 12:50Speaker 2: Well, I mean, I just want to have a place
- 12:52Speaker 2: where people don't do that, right, That's that's a responsibility.
- 12:54Speaker 2: Have a good culture, you know, where people want to
- 12:56Speaker 2: stay there. All right, So before we move on to
- 12:59Speaker 2: more stories, we've got a sponsor message. So this podcast

- 13:43Speaker 4: do you got, Nathan?
- 13:44Speaker 3: All Right? I got a couple quick ones today, you
- 13:46Speaker 3: guys ready, Yeah, Yeah, I got Chicki's time. I had
- 13:50Speaker 3: a co worker get mad at a resident and he
- 13:53Speaker 3: punched him several times in the face. He was escort
- 13:55Speaker 3: out in handcuffs, and I think he'd been working for
- 13:58Speaker 3: about three months.
- 13:59Speaker 4: Wow, what the word resident? Like?
- 14:03Speaker 3: I think this person worked at like an apartment complex. Okay,
- 14:06Speaker 3: And so imagine you're at the first because.
- 14:08Speaker 2: When I heard resident, I immediately thought like of like doctor,
- 14:12Speaker 2: like like elder care kind of.
- 14:13Speaker 4: I was like, oh my god, either way is bad? Well,
- 14:16Speaker 4: either way is bad?
- 14:18Speaker 3: Well, face punching is kind of going south. Yeah, but
- 14:21Speaker 3: I think this person literally worked at the apartment complex
- 14:23Speaker 3: and it's like one of the people who live there. Yeah,
- 14:26Speaker 3: like I'm out at you, let me punch in the face.
- 14:27Speaker 3: There's a lot of people just resort the violence right away, which,
- 14:30Speaker 3: as we know, it's never the answer, right, Okay, next
- 14:33Speaker 3: one a little bit less violent, but probably even worse.
- 14:36Speaker 3: I worked with lady who clipped her fingernails at her
- 14:39Speaker 3: desk with scissors. She was a tempt and she did
- 14:42Speaker 3: not last two days.
- 14:44Speaker 5: How long were her nails? Do you use scissors?
- 14:46Speaker 3: Long enough for scissors? I guess she's a temp, so
- 14:50Speaker 3: just a bad tempt.
- 14:52Speaker 2: Yeah, there's there's gotta be some we gotta put together,
- 14:56Speaker 2: like a class for workplace attice or something. And then
- 14:59Speaker 2: it's like people should.
- 15:00Speaker 6: Well these are things that you think you don't have
- 15:02Speaker 6: to put in the handbook, but yeah.
- 15:05Speaker 3: They're cutting. Yeah, yeah, we can also start several times.
- 15:09Speaker 4: Don't leave your nail trimmings on your desk.
- 15:11Speaker 3: We started the bad hire, the bad temp, the sad hire.
- 15:14Speaker 7: We got like a yeah, yeah, thank you guys for
- 15:17Speaker 7: inspiring us.
- 15:18Speaker 3: Exactly. That's all I got.
- 15:20Speaker 4: Anyway, who's up? Who else? Are you ready? Yeah? Gom,
- 15:23Speaker 4: what's up? What did you find this week that you loved?
- 15:27Speaker 6: I start with a couple of short ones, and then
- 15:28Speaker 6: I'll end on like a longer one. Here we go.
- 15:32Speaker 6: I once had an employee who is seemingly a reformed convict,
- 15:37Speaker 6: but ended up later robbing a bank and tried to
- 15:40Speaker 6: take the money north into Canada. I'm in Colorado. He
- 15:44Speaker 6: took two of our employees with them, and they were
- 15:46Speaker 6: caught about halfway through Wyholming and honesty ended up being
- 15:50Speaker 6: funny because he signed his real name on the bank's
- 15:53Speaker 6: welcome booklet before he proceeded to rob them.
- 15:57Speaker 5: Here's my autograph, shows a good time to be honest
- 16:00Speaker 5: when I get arrested here in a little bit.
- 16:03Speaker 4: Oh my god.
- 16:06Speaker 2: Well, I believe in second chances. Big believer in second chances.
- 16:11Speaker 3: I feel like most people, like you know, get out
- 16:13Speaker 3: of the country, but like not always to Canada. I
- 16:15Speaker 3: don't know.
- 16:15Speaker 2: It's kind of random, is It's kind of I don't know,
- 16:18Speaker 2: It's like something in movies, like We're headed to Canada,
- 16:20Speaker 2: Like Canada's gonna.
- 16:21Speaker 4: Harbor you Canada Harbor's Argentina bank croppers. Yeah, we'll get
- 16:28Speaker 4: that story.
- 16:29Speaker 2: Is He says he took two employees with him, So
- 16:31Speaker 2: not only was this a bad hire, but he actually
- 16:33Speaker 2: recruited people to his gang.
- 16:35Speaker 6: Yeah, it looks like it's three bad hires.
- 16:38Speaker 4: It turns out the one bad her.
- 16:40Speaker 6: Yeah, I wish you would have given given a little
- 16:43Speaker 6: bit more detail. I would like to know more about this.
- 16:48Speaker 5: That's all I got.
- 16:49Speaker 4: Yeah, that's true story. That's crazy.
- 16:51Speaker 3: I wonder how many of these are made up? Also,
- 16:54Speaker 3: like for the contest, some of them don't just make
- 16:56Speaker 3: up a story.
- 16:57Speaker 4: Yeah, seriously, we did a bet.
- 17:00Speaker 2: Real life is like tough enough, you know, it's real.
- 17:04Speaker 2: Real life is full of enough hiring disasters.
- 17:07Speaker 3: Maybe for the winning story, we'll have to like go
- 17:09Speaker 3: in and ask their co workers to verify, make sure
- 17:12Speaker 3: they weren't just taken up.
- 17:13Speaker 4: You got to dig in. Yeah, you guys think about that,
- 17:16Speaker 4: Like submit it. Submit.
- 17:17Speaker 2: The story's got to be real, you know, because it's
- 17:20Speaker 2: gotta it's gotta, you know, forget to write ten tels
- 17:23Speaker 2: dark track.
- 17:23Speaker 4: It's got to fit a little scrutiny.
- 17:25Speaker 2: Yeah, otherwise we'll get a bunch of made up chat
- 17:28Speaker 2: GPT stories from people, right, And that's what I don't want.
- 17:31Speaker 3: That real and bad and real bad.
- 17:33Speaker 6: Yeah, this one's really really short, but it's it's kind
- 17:37Speaker 6: of funny. I had an employee quit because he was
- 17:40Speaker 6: afraid of the dark. Oh but what's funny is that
- 17:45Speaker 6: his job was he was a security guard on the
- 17:48Speaker 6: night shift. Quit halfway through his shift.
- 17:55Speaker 3: I was taking the day shift.
- 17:58Speaker 5: I applied for the day shift. You're gonna make me
- 18:00Speaker 5: go on night in the door.
- 18:05Speaker 4: I was sick, right, that's what was good.
- 18:08Speaker 2: I'm just I'm just in all because I'm like, well,
- 18:11Speaker 2: he's an adult, right, he's afraid.
- 18:13Speaker 3: Of breaking down. Like the only thing you have to
- 18:16Speaker 3: do to get past the security system is just turned
- 18:18Speaker 3: the lights off and then you're all right, Like, I'm good.
- 18:21Speaker 4: Let you Roberts says, turn the lights off. He leaves.
- 18:27Speaker 3: Oh my gosh, you're all ready to the next one.
- 18:30Speaker 4: You find funny ones.
- 18:32Speaker 5: I like the funny ones.
- 18:33Speaker 6: This one is a little bit longer.
- 18:36Speaker 4: Here we go.
- 18:37Speaker 6: I was a supervisor for a high end quote unquote
- 18:40Speaker 6: high end retail store that we were preparing for grand opening.
- 18:44Speaker 6: We had hired one guy, we'll call him Tom. Tom
- 18:48Speaker 6: that was in his early that was in his early
- 18:51Speaker 6: to mid twenties. Over the course of a couple of weeks,
- 18:55Speaker 6: I noticed that I barely ever saw Tom during his
- 18:58Speaker 6: shifts after I sent him off to do something thing.
- 19:01Speaker 6: One day, I sent him onto the sales floor with
- 19:03Speaker 6: a cart of merchandise to stock and realize that it
- 19:06Speaker 6: had been over twenty minutes and all the other employees
- 19:08Speaker 6: had already been back two to three times. I was
- 19:12Speaker 6: the only manager on, so I knew he didn't get
- 19:14Speaker 6: sent to another task, so I asked if anyone had
- 19:16Speaker 6: seen him. One girl turned to me and said, he's
- 19:19Speaker 6: probably in his cubby, and then proceeded to show me
- 19:21Speaker 6: where it was. Apparently Tom had created a cubby for
- 19:25Speaker 6: himself about three to four feet wide behind some old
- 19:29Speaker 6: shelving units. He had stolen a heated blanket, pillow, and
- 19:34Speaker 6: various food items off of the sales floor, and that's
- 19:36Speaker 6: where he had been hanging out for the majority of
- 19:38Speaker 6: his shifts for over a month, checking in with various
- 19:41Speaker 6: managers at thirty to forty five minute intervals so as
- 19:45Speaker 6: to be seen by somebody. This was his third or
- 19:48Speaker 6: fourth offense, so he fired him. He proceeded to rip
- 19:52Speaker 6: his shirt in half and start crying while screaming why
- 19:57Speaker 6: over eaking.
- 19:58Speaker 3: My cobby at the top his lungs.
- 20:01Speaker 6: We then escorted him out of the building, where he
- 20:05Speaker 6: continued screaming and crying while beating his chest what and
- 20:09Speaker 6: spitting on the windows of the building.
- 20:13Speaker 3: Just keeps going, Yeah, yeah, yeah, Tom, what's going on?
- 20:21Speaker 3: That's pretty good?
- 20:22Speaker 5: That is that the girl was like, he's probably in this.
- 20:26Speaker 2: Covey, right, just co workers find bad hires so much
- 20:33Speaker 2: faster than managers, don't they. I guess it was just
- 20:35Speaker 2: like this guy is terrible. They just no one says anything,
- 20:40Speaker 2: just keeps on going. You know, it's like, Okay, we're
- 20:43Speaker 2: just gonna let him sleep over there.
- 20:44Speaker 3: And spitting spitting on the window. That's crazy. That just
- 20:47Speaker 3: it just kept going.
- 20:48Speaker 4: I don't know the whole hulk move of ripping his
- 20:51Speaker 4: shirt in half, beating on his chair. Tom, I have
- 20:57Speaker 4: one more, all right, okay.
- 21:00Speaker 5: Also kind of long.
- 21:01Speaker 6: It's a little bit longer than the last one, but
- 21:03Speaker 6: not too long. This one's actually local Charlotte way.
- 21:11Speaker 5: It doesn't say it anyways, but a.
- 21:13Speaker 6: Few years ago, I was a kitchen manager at a
- 21:15Speaker 6: place in Charlotte, North Carolina. I don't know if it
- 21:19Speaker 6: is common knowledge or not, but drug use in kitchens
- 21:21Speaker 6: is very common and most of the time accepted that.
- 21:26Speaker 6: Being said, I had a line cook who came in
- 21:31Speaker 6: who was on drugs. He came to me, explained the situation, apologized,
- 21:36Speaker 6: asked if he could run somewhere and come in a
- 21:38Speaker 6: little later in quote unquote better shape. It was slow
- 21:42Speaker 6: and most of the prep was done, so I said
- 21:44Speaker 6: he could have an extra hour. He comes back forty
- 21:48Speaker 6: five minutes later and has calmed down, stopped shaking, and
- 21:52Speaker 6: had a grin on his face. He was one of
- 21:55Speaker 6: my better line cooks, so I was glad to see
- 21:57Speaker 6: that I didn't have to reprimand him. We begin then
- 22:00Speaker 6: service and everything is running smoothly when I look across
- 22:03Speaker 6: the line and he begins to look as if he's
- 22:05Speaker 6: falling asleep while working the grill. He assured me that
- 22:08Speaker 6: he was fine. Fifteen minutes goes by and I see
- 22:11Speaker 6: him collapse, landing with his face and arm on the grill.
- 22:15Speaker 6: He did not wake up. I run across the kitchen
- 22:18Speaker 6: and push him off, skin literally melted to.
- 22:21Speaker 3: The what skin melted to the grill?
- 22:24Speaker 6: He hits the ground. He wakes up and simply says, oh, shoot, chef,
- 22:28Speaker 6: may I go to the hospital.
- 22:31Speaker 3: So I've been cooked? Please go to the hospital.
- 22:34Speaker 5: That's not all okay, gosh, the smell was horrific.
- 22:39Speaker 6: On a Friday night, we closed the restaurant, opened all
- 22:41Speaker 6: the doors and windows and cleaned up the cleaned up
- 22:44Speaker 6: the mess. As I'm doing my order for the next day,
- 22:47Speaker 6: around ten pm, he comes back in bandaged up and says, Chef,
- 22:51Speaker 6: can I help with anything? Astonished, I couldn't reply, and
- 22:56Speaker 6: he continued to explain that he went to his dealer's
- 23:00Speaker 6: house and got a lot of said drug, snorted it
- 23:06Speaker 6: so he could calm down and just knotted out. And
- 23:10Speaker 6: then he says, but it's okay. They gave me morphine
- 23:13Speaker 6: so I can still work, and I'm dumb, so don't
- 23:15Speaker 6: worry about workers comp I.
- 23:17Speaker 3: Just wanted to have a job, He's persistent.
- 23:21Speaker 4: Well, I thought he was.
- 23:22Speaker 2: You know how they in the kitchens they call you know, chef.
- 23:25Speaker 2: They used the whole chef. Yeah, so, you know, I
- 23:27Speaker 2: thought it.
- 23:28Speaker 4: Was stunning that after he woke up from being cooked
- 23:31Speaker 4: on the grill, he wakes up and says, chef, chef.
- 23:34Speaker 3: You know, chef.
- 23:35Speaker 5: Here's the end.
- 23:37Speaker 6: Two weeks later, he returned to work sober and hasn't
- 23:39Speaker 6: touched a drug or had a drink since I arranged,
- 23:43Speaker 6: so that his hospital bills were paid, but he had
- 23:45Speaker 6: no paid time off, and then at the bottom says
- 23:50Speaker 6: after he like stopped working there. Whatever, it's been about
- 23:53Speaker 6: three years. He contacted him years later, this guy he
- 23:57Speaker 6: met his now fiance.
- 23:59Speaker 4: And tell me it's a good story.
- 24:01Speaker 6: Okay, expect And they're now expecting a daughter in a
- 24:04Speaker 6: few months. And was just called about becoming the Sioux
- 24:07Speaker 6: chef at a restaurant opening in Atlanta.
- 24:10Speaker 3: Wow.
- 24:11Speaker 6: And he said that he moved there because Charlotte is
- 24:14Speaker 6: too dangerous for him.
- 24:16Speaker 4: Wow, Charlotte story it actually, you know, that's actually heartwarming.
- 24:23Speaker 4: I actually like the story.
- 24:26Speaker 2: It's like a bad hire turns the hire to risky
- 24:30Speaker 2: hired a good hire to then.
- 24:33Speaker 4: Like, I love it.
- 24:35Speaker 5: I love that at the end of the tunnel sometimes
- 24:38Speaker 5: I love that.
- 24:39Speaker 4: And good good for good for the chef for keep
- 24:42Speaker 4: hanging on to the dude realizing the checking in with
- 24:45Speaker 4: him later. Yeah do that that chefs Like the.
- 24:48Speaker 2: Guy who runs that was like really a good dude
- 24:51Speaker 2: on the podcast, right, I mean, so the bad had
- 24:54Speaker 2: a you know, the guy had a bad a bad
- 24:56Speaker 2: day local.
- 24:57Speaker 5: Maybe I can find him, yeah.
- 24:59Speaker 4: Figure out where he's working.
- 25:00Speaker 3: Yeah, man, that's crazy.
- 25:02Speaker 4: I love that story.
- 25:03Speaker 3: Oh I got yeah that actually had.
- 25:06Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, I love the fact that it came around. Yeah,
- 25:12Speaker 4: so I have a couple.
- 25:13Speaker 7: The first one actually is about a background check. So
- 25:16Speaker 7: we're going to get into love to hear it, love
- 25:17Speaker 7: to hear it, and read it all right. I worked
- 25:19Speaker 7: with a guy who got an awkward call from HR
- 25:21Speaker 7: about six months after he'd started working because the results
- 25:25Speaker 7: of his background check.
- 25:26Speaker 5: Had to finally come back.
- 25:28Speaker 4: Okay, six weeks to get a background check, I've heard.
- 25:31Speaker 2: I've heard complaints about long background checks, like weeks, people
- 25:35Speaker 2: complaining about days, days and weeks months.
- 25:39Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 25:40Speaker 4: Wow.
- 25:41Speaker 7: It showed that he had an outstanding warrant from another
- 25:43Speaker 7: state that he did not know about, so HR wanted
- 25:47Speaker 7: to fire him on the spot as a matter of process.
- 25:50Speaker 7: But he was really good at his job, so the
- 25:52Speaker 7: boss lobbied for him. He was able to clear his situation.
- 25:55Speaker 7: Of course, the way he told it, the whole thing
- 25:58Speaker 7: had been a misunderstanding, but his version of the story
- 26:00Speaker 7: seemed to be a lot of plot holes. In my
- 26:02Speaker 7: honest opinion, they never would have hired him in the
- 26:06Speaker 7: first place if the check.
- 26:07Speaker 5: Had come back quickly.
- 26:09Speaker 4: Wow. Yeah, So I don't know.
- 26:12Speaker 7: It's kind of like a double edge stort because he
- 26:13Speaker 7: ended up being a good hire Like, he was a
- 26:15Speaker 7: good employee, but if they had screened him and saw
- 26:18Speaker 7: that he had a warrant, they never would have hired
- 26:20Speaker 7: him and they never would have known.
- 26:21Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 26:22Speaker 2: But also it's warrants, right, that's just a rest. Yeah,
- 26:26Speaker 2: so that's like a dicey subject actually. I mean, you know,
- 26:31Speaker 2: when someone's got a warrant doesn't mean they're guilty. It
- 26:33Speaker 2: just means they're just going to get arrested.
- 26:35Speaker 3: How do you get a warrant out for your arrest
- 26:38Speaker 3: without knowing about it?
- 26:39Speaker 7: I don't know.
- 26:40Speaker 6: Yeah, I was about to ask, like, what.
- 26:42Speaker 5: Do you mean he didn't know?
- 26:43Speaker 4: Yeah, I think it's probably possible.
- 26:45Speaker 2: I mean, someone could allege something you did and you
- 26:47Speaker 2: didn't know about it, right, And so in someplaces, no, no,
- 26:51Speaker 2: you didn't do it, right, someone just names you and
- 26:54Speaker 2: calls you out, and next time they make a warrant
- 26:56Speaker 2: for your arrest, and then you know, there you go,
- 26:59Speaker 2: or whatever whatever it might be. There's the important thing
- 27:02Speaker 2: in those types of situations is to recognize that warrants
- 27:07Speaker 2: aren't convictions and they are arrests. And he asked the question.
- 27:11Speaker 2: You just asked, like, hey, how does how did that happen?
- 27:13Speaker 2: And listen to them tell their story, and then you
- 27:16Speaker 2: got to make a judgment call. As an HR pro recruit,
- 27:19Speaker 2: you got to make a judgment call on whether or
- 27:20Speaker 2: not you know you can live with that, you know,
- 27:23Speaker 2: with the with the uncertainty, and a.
- 27:24Speaker 4: Lot of a lot of times you can.
- 27:25Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 27:26Speaker 3: So wait, what was the end?
- 27:28Speaker 4: But what the big part of that story? Nathan is
- 27:30Speaker 4: six months to get the background check.
- 27:32Speaker 6: I guess they kept him on so I mean didn't
- 27:35Speaker 6: say they fired him after they got the results.
- 27:36Speaker 4: Don Oh it didn't Oh no, no, he said no.
- 27:39Speaker 4: He says like he was doing good work, so the
- 27:41Speaker 4: boss lobbied for him. Good for the good for the boss.
- 27:45Speaker 5: Yeah, just so to keep them all right.
- 27:47Speaker 7: This next one is really short and sweet, as little
- 27:49Speaker 7: one sentence. This fire added urine to their ramin in
- 27:53Speaker 7: the break room.
- 27:53Speaker 3: At lunch, What what what hold on?
- 27:58Speaker 4: To start over?
- 27:59Speaker 5: The current employee added urine to their ramen, and the
- 28:02Speaker 5: break room my launch.
- 28:04Speaker 6: To their own ramen.
- 28:06Speaker 4: Yes, okay, I don't know.
- 28:09Speaker 5: I don't either. That's it. That's all I said. Yeah,
- 28:16Speaker 5: I would like to know the end of that story
- 28:19Speaker 5: at the beginning.
- 28:19Speaker 4: A new employee. Yeah, is it new employer or new habit?
- 28:24Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 28:24Speaker 2: Just one sentence, all right, Okay, we'd always kunt Morgan
- 28:29Speaker 2: for the like shock value, like.
- 28:32Speaker 3: Short Yeah, no details, No, that was it?
- 28:35Speaker 6: No context?
- 28:36Speaker 4: All right?
- 28:36Speaker 5: This one is years ago. I was doing a rehire.
- 28:39Speaker 7: The guy stated he had left the company to take
- 28:41Speaker 7: care of his dad, who had terminal cancer. He was
- 28:43Speaker 7: gone about eighteen months. He refused to follow an application
- 28:46Speaker 7: and a background check paperwork. He told me he didn't
- 28:49Speaker 7: have to contest, he just wanted to use his previous paperwork.
- 28:52Speaker 7: This was for an aircraft mechanic position. So once you're
- 28:55Speaker 7: gone for over thirty days, you have to reapply and
- 28:57Speaker 7: get a fresh background check, drug screen, et cetera.
- 29:01Speaker 4: Absolutely, Yep.
- 29:02Speaker 7: He went to my boss who he was friends with,
- 29:04Speaker 7: and previously my boss had stated that for the rehiring process,
- 29:08Speaker 7: HR would take care of it, so he didn't need
- 29:10Speaker 7: to worry about it.
- 29:11Speaker 5: So I get him started.
- 29:12Speaker 7: Background check came back because he was forced to do it.
- 29:15Speaker 7: He was in jail for that period of time and
- 29:17Speaker 7: his father had passed away years ago. Needless to say, hes.
- 29:21Speaker 5: A rehire process.
- 29:22Speaker 6: So he was about to say. First red flag should
- 29:25Speaker 6: have been him refusing to fill out the paperwork.
- 29:27Speaker 5: Yeah, exactly.
- 29:29Speaker 4: Hey, it's just easier for use my stuff from a
- 29:31Speaker 4: couple of years ago.
- 29:32Speaker 5: It's too much.
- 29:33Speaker 3: Work to do a whole nother y.
- 29:35Speaker 5: Yeah, so this is my last story of this episode.
- 29:38Speaker 7: But this kind of relates to our first or I
- 29:41Speaker 7: guess second episode, when we said that there was a
- 29:43Speaker 7: second person who showed.
- 29:44Speaker 5: Up for the interviewed.
- 29:45Speaker 4: Oh yeah, yeah, yeah the person.
- 29:47Speaker 5: This one's similar, but this one's a little bit more
- 29:49Speaker 5: I guess, kind of wholesome.
- 29:50Speaker 4: Maybe, Okay, good, it's nice to see you doing something wholesome.
- 29:54Speaker 7: So this applicant filled out his application with his name,
- 29:58Speaker 7: but after a rather pleasant interview, divalve that he was
- 30:02Speaker 7: actually for his girlfriend or his boo that had got
- 30:06Speaker 7: out of jail the following week.
- 30:07Speaker 4: Wait, he was applying for her.
- 30:09Speaker 3: Yes, he interviewed for her, and use his information for
- 30:12Speaker 3: people do apply on other people's behalf or interview on
- 30:15Speaker 3: I have.
- 30:16Speaker 2: I saw some stuff the other day of some survey
- 30:20Speaker 2: work where uh, interviewees were having their parents come to
- 30:24Speaker 2: the interview with them, Like people kids out of college
- 30:27Speaker 2: were having their parents attend an interview, like can I
- 30:30Speaker 2: bring my parents?
- 30:30Speaker 4: Can I bring my mom?
- 30:32Speaker 3: There's the references taking bash for me, some recruiter, some
- 30:38Speaker 3: recruiter needs.
- 30:39Speaker 2: Some recruiter needs to post under this episode where they've
- 30:41Speaker 2: ever had a request for a parent to come.
- 30:44Speaker 3: Yeah, I'm sure or their boo Yeah.
- 30:47Speaker 7: He said that all of her answers would be the
- 30:49Speaker 7: same as his, so I should know she's legit. So
- 30:56Speaker 7: he was just trying to do his boothing a favor.
- 30:58Speaker 6: That's real love right there.
- 31:00Speaker 5: He said, don't worry, I got you.
- 31:01Speaker 4: Was like, I like him.
- 31:04Speaker 5: He went to jail. She's a good girl. You don't
- 31:07Speaker 5: worry about it.
- 31:08Speaker 4: You know she would be Yeah, the boo hire.
- 31:12Speaker 3: Yeah that's our Halloween theme.
- 31:16Speaker 5: Yeah, next episode Halloween season.
- 31:19Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 31:21Speaker 4: Wow, I don't know.
- 31:23Speaker 2: I think that's I think that's a little great. I
- 31:25Speaker 2: still I think today's favorite for me is the Full
- 31:30Speaker 2: Circle you know ended beautifully movie the Chef. You know
- 31:35Speaker 2: that the drug using cook ends up ends up with
- 31:39Speaker 2: his life turned around and a kid on the way.
- 31:41Speaker 4: Yeah. I love that good stuff. No, I don't love
- 31:49Speaker 4: that part. I love the I love the redemption part
- 31:52Speaker 4: of that story. One that was so bad.
- 31:57Speaker 5: I really do like that he checked up on him.
- 31:59Speaker 4: You find more, find some more stories that made me
