- 0:00Let me ask you a question. So right now, what are you
- 0:03feeling? Not what are you thinking, not
- 0:08what happened today, but what are you actually feeling?
- 0:12Most men that I work with or a lot of men that I work with can
- 0:15answer the question with one of three words, fine, feeling
- 0:20stressed or I'm feeling tired. And that's the problem.
- 0:23Because if you can't identify what you're feeling, you can't
- 0:27respond to what you're feeling. And if you can't respond to what
- 0:31you're feeling, you'll eventually escape what you're
- 0:33feeling. So for many men, that's where
- 0:37addiction begins. OK, that's where compulsive
- 0:39behavior ends. That's where it begins that we
- 0:42start to lose track of what our values are.
- 0:48Welcome to Beyond the Facade podcast.
- 0:50I'm your host, Luke Gordon, and I'm thrilled to have you join me
- 0:53in this space today. What we're going to be doing is
- 0:55diving deep into the trials and triumphs and truths of seeking
- 0:59authenticity. Becoming your true self isn't
- 1:02about a single action or a moment.
- 1:04It's a relentless pursuit, a commitment to self that reveals
- 1:07a rich connection and meaning that our life has to offer.
- 1:10So whether this is your first time tuning in or you're a
- 1:12regular listener, know this. What you're building here goes
- 1:16beyond a conversation. You're here to challenge, to
- 1:18change, and to celebrate the incredible journey of becoming
- 1:22your authentic self. Because when you dare to show up
- 1:24fully, the rewards are immeasurable.
- 1:26So welcome to Beyond the Facade. Let's get started all.
- 1:31Right, Anyway, let's jump into this.
- 1:33So men aren't emotionally unaware because they're broken.
- 1:37They're emotionally unaware because nobody taught them.
- 1:40So let's talk about this. You got a family system that
- 1:42they grew up in and then the thing that was told which was
- 1:45man up, get over it, don't cry, but let's perform, do better.
- 1:52Their performances praised good grades, doing well in sports,
- 1:56not so much being aware of what you're experiencing performance.
- 2:01So I spent years believing that I was self aware because I could
- 2:06explain my problems, right? So being able to explain your
- 2:11emotions isn't the same thing as experiencing them and thoughts
- 2:15are not feelings. So this is where you could have
- 2:18this is where we can have some fun when we talk about this
- 2:20guys. So again, let's talk about this.
- 2:23What are you feeling? What are the common answers I
- 2:26get back? In fact, it happens often inside
- 2:29of our phase two groups where we show up and the check in is, is
- 2:33what mood meter feelings will. What are you feeling?
- 2:37Some of the common answers are as I feel like nobody
- 2:39understands me. I feel like my partners having
- 2:43big feelings and my partner's frustrated with me.
- 2:47I feel like things aren't getting better.
- 2:49And then I just want to point out none of those things are
- 2:52feelings. Those are thoughts.
- 2:55Actual emotions are different than that.
- 2:57The actual emotions are more like I'm feeling.
- 3:00I'm fearful right now, I'm feeling shame, I'm feeling
- 3:03grief, I'm feeling lonely. Boy, that one never gets
- 3:06mentioned in Group shame and loneliness.
- 3:09That's the one that isn't really so much like, hey, what are you
- 3:13feeling today? I'm feeling rejected, I'm
- 3:16feeling disappointed, I'm feeling helpless.
- 3:19A lot of men live there, live in their heads because their
- 3:23emotions world feels very unfamiliar.
- 3:26And I experienced this so much in myself.
- 3:28This has been so much of my journey.
- 3:30A lot of talks a lot about I want to move you from up here
- 3:34being like rational thoughts into feeling getting inside your
- 3:37body and the reason why men don't want to get inside their
- 3:41body. The reason why the guys that I
- 3:43work with only get inside the body, including myself as it
- 3:46feels unfamiliar. I don't know what I'm feeling.
- 3:48I can't put words on and I can't express.
- 3:51I can't name what I'm feeling. So why emotional awareness
- 3:56matters in recovery. This is the heart of what we're
- 3:59talking about today, guys. Most men think in this order.
- 4:03Trigger, acting out. OK, trigger acting out and often
- 4:08it's a sexual trigger and then I act out sexually.
- 4:11Reality often looks like something else.
- 4:15Emotion, distress, escape, then acting out.
- 4:20Notice how different that is? Trigger acting out, emotion
- 4:25distress, escape, then acting out, right.
- 4:29So I'll just give you an example.
- 4:31Somebody comes home, their partners distance.
- 4:35They don't know why he doesn't recognize it.
- 4:38He views it as like rejection or I'm not enough.
- 4:41There's a ton of fear there. He only notices the discomfort.
- 4:44So what does he do? He escapes from it.
- 4:47So you cannot regulate an emotion unless you identify that
- 4:51emotion. And it's scary to like notice
- 4:56fear, right? I'm scared being able to name
- 4:58it. In fact, I want to share this
- 5:01with you guys sometimes. But in the Rocky Three movie,
- 5:04there's one where Rocky's giving up.
- 5:07I hope this makes sense to you guys.
- 5:08Maybe you want to go back and check out the movie, but he's on
- 5:11the beach. And then Rocky three, I watched
- 5:14the my boys this last weekend. But in the movie, he's running
- 5:19on the beach and he's training because he just barely got beat
- 5:21by Mr. T Clubber Lang. And also Mick just died his
- 5:25trainer. So he's a like at the bottom and
- 5:29he he's giving up. And then his wife really just
- 5:33like she's frustrated. She's like, don't give up.
- 5:37And he is scared. And finally he's able to voice
- 5:40I'm afraid I am afraid, right. So completely irrational to that
- 5:45and blaming a bunch of different things, but he can't name his
- 5:47emotion. And finally he does.
- 5:49But what happens, he turns a corner, he gets back in the
- 5:52fight. He doesn't give up.
- 5:54So you can't regulate an emotion you can't identify.
- 5:57So the difference between managing behaviour and
- 5:59understanding behaviour is really important.
- 6:02So let's talk about the why behavioural tools matter but
- 6:05aren't enough, right? So we have these things, we have
- 6:08filters, we have accountability, we have boundaries, we have
- 6:11recovery plans, all very important.
- 6:14But eventually, men, they're going to have to ask, what am I
- 6:18trying to not feel? Why am I using?
- 6:21Why is my drug a choice, even an option?
- 6:24What does it give me? What am I trying not to fill?
- 6:27And this connects beautifully to, I think so beautifully to
- 6:31Tinza. I'm going to keep going back to
- 6:33Tinza over and over again. Trauma induced sexual addiction
- 6:36by Doctor Barta because it really emphasizes emotional
- 6:40regulation. The root of the problem is I
- 6:42don't know how to regulate. I don't know how to calm down.
- 6:44So I go to maladaptive ways. All right, so let's introduce a
- 6:49practical exercise right now, something concrete.
- 6:52Here's my invitation for next week.
- 6:54I want you to do a few different things.
- 6:56Three times a day. I want you to ask, what am I
- 7:00feeling? OK, Use only emotion.
- 7:04Word. OK.
- 7:05No stories, no explanations, just feelings.
- 7:08Then ask where do I feel it in my body?
- 7:11I could feel like I feel you rolling your eyes right now.
- 7:13Like I don't want to do that, doesn't matter.
- 7:15Will it work? What's the outcome?
- 7:18Just recognizing where do I fill it in my body?
- 7:21This gives a small bridge into some somatic awareness and that
- 7:24is healing the somatic work without making, without really
- 7:28doing somatic work. You're going to have a small
- 7:30bridge into it. So I just want to share with
- 7:33you, most men don't act out because they want pornography.
- 7:37They don't act out. Most men don't act out because
- 7:39they want an affair. Most men don't act out because
- 7:42they want compulsive behaviors. They act out because they don't
- 7:45know what to do with what they're feeling.
- 7:49And you can't heal what you can't name.
- 7:52So if the work seems vague and it's kind of confusing, like why
- 7:55to be able to name my emotions and maybe you're focusing right
- 7:57now. I want to have empathy for my
- 7:58partner and I need to have feelings, but you don't know
- 8:00why. Maybe this episode has some
- 8:02Nuggets in there for you. The reason And the moment you
- 8:05begin to identify his emotional experiences is the moment you
- 8:08stop becoming a victim of them. OK, Because yeah, guess what?
- 8:12If I'm fatigued and I'm tired, I'm going to find a way to wind
- 8:14down. I'm going to find a way to to
- 8:16chill out. But it might be a really
- 8:19destructive pattern. So just again, you're this
- 8:22awareness you have, it's not going to solve anything.
- 8:25But nothing gets solved without it, OK?
- 8:28Nothing gets solved that awareness.
- 8:30It doesn't solve everything. OK, so for next week, we're
- 8:35going to stop asking why do I keep doing this?
- 8:37Instead, you're going to ask yourself, what am I feeling
- 8:39right now that I haven't named yet?
- 8:42So you might be surprised how much changes when you stop
- 8:46focusing on the behavior and start paying attention the
- 8:49emotion underneath it. So anyway, looking forward to
- 8:52spending more time with you in these concepts we're sharing and
- 8:56take care. Hey, so let's talk about our
- 8:59reclaimed intensive coming up. I know we have some buzz around
- 9:01it and I'm hoping we get to see you there, but let me tell you
- 9:03what it's about. Have you ever felt like a part
- 9:06of you genuinely wants recovery while another part of you keep
- 9:09sabotaging it? Where one part wants like
- 9:12connection to another part wants escape?
- 9:14Where one part wants honesty and another part wants to hide?
- 9:18And let me give you one more. Where one part wants to be
- 9:21present with your kids, your partner, and your life, but
- 9:25another part you wants to numb out, wants to check out, wants
- 9:28to disappear all together. Many men spend years fighting
- 9:32this internal battle without even understanding what's
- 9:35actually happening beneath the surface.
- 9:37The truth is, you're not broken. You're not.
- 9:40Crazy. You're not fighting against
- 9:41yourself by accident. You're carrying a system of
- 9:45parts that were developed for a reason.
- 9:47That's why we create the reclaimed intensive.
- 9:50So Reclaim is a four day men's intensive built around internal
- 9:53family systems and parts work and other American tools of
- 9:55recovery. So together we want to identify
- 9:58these different parts of you and we want to understand the wounds
- 10:02and what they're protecting and how to be LED through your
- 10:06internal system so you can find some clarity and confidence and
- 10:09self energy that you haven't had before.
- 10:11Because this isn't about trying harder, it's about understanding
- 10:14what's happening inside of you. So if you're struggling and you
- 10:19want to move beyond managing some of the systems and start
- 10:22addressing it, please join us from August 18th to the 21st in
- 10:26Spanish Fork, UT. So go ahead and visit
