- 0:07The Chicago Cubs faced the San Francisco Giants at Candlestick Park for opening day on Tuesday, April 3rd, 1984.
- 0:15The Cubs were led by new manager Jim Fray, who was looking to put some life into the Cubbies after five straight seasons finishing no better than fifth place in the NL East.
- 0:24San Francisco was managed by Frank Robinson in his fourth year as skipper.
- 0:28The Giants had been an average team at best in each of his first three seasons, but was looking to make some changes in 1984 by acquiring some new All-Stars that included a trade for Al Oliver and the signing of free agent Manny Trieu.
- 0:40This audio recording is from the Chicago Radio broadcast featuring announcers Milo Hamilton, Lou Boudreau, and of course Harry Carey.
- 0:48And we're anxious to get going, and here we go. Bob De Nair is the hitter. The first pitch of the game, but a left-hander is flung on and a bullet up the middle for a paint-pitch.
- 0:58And Bobby De Nair sniped it off with a solid single, whizzed right by the ear of Davis. Aggressiveness, that's what I'd like to see.
- 1:06The Cubs showed it in batting practice. Let's hope it continues right through the cage.
- 1:11So Bob De Nair is on, one pitch, one single. And Ryan Sandberg.
- 1:18Now, when we're out there talking to Davis and the plate on Kyle Wendell's that's gone out, he's had his first duty today other than taking in the lineup car and say, hey, there's only one pitch, this is not the end of the world.
- 1:31This is right, and I didn't think Davis had too much on that ball as far as velocity. It looked like he was just aiming the ball over the plate. Open to get that first pitch in and get things underway.
- 1:41Well, here's Ryan Sandberg with an old teammate of his three years through the minor league system. Big lead, pitch on the way, low inside of the ball, and it's one and 0 to Sandberg and Carey Matthews is due up next.
- 1:54And it'll be Ron Say. One ball, no strikes. They play Sandberg with a big hole in right center. The center fielder's playing him to full.
- 2:05That's a little unusual. Throw to first, not close. Usually, Sandberg. But of course, some of this will go into how Brenley and Davis have talked about tracking to him.
- 2:15But you still don't see many center fielder's playing him to full as much as Davis is. Now offensively, Sandberg can see that setup so he will know how they're pitching to him.
- 2:25Now, time called to near, wants to smooth out that dirt where he's trying to get in his own sliding blocks down there.
- 2:34We talked about defensive maneuvers and that soft clearance. The offensive running game may be held up a little.
- 2:42Edging not going, strike call to Sandberg, good softball, and it is one and one.
- 2:47John Zmukovic in his third year with the Cubs is coaching at first. John Zimmer, up by himself, is coaching at third. It's great to have him back.
- 2:56He was a player with the Cubs several years ago. His manager was, was a five, the old number five.
- 3:03Good bounce. All right. Let me tell you, he was the closest to A. I brought up Sandberg in 1960 and told Zimmer, you make a third base put out of him. And he did a great job.
- 3:20Hey, I guess he did. Two balls and a strike to near with the lead. I think he was going that time. And Davis went over that way.
- 3:34Jack Clark, he's a little toward the line. There is a big hole in right center for Sandberg. Runner going, pitch out.
- 3:43The throw down will be, it's right in the down pocket field. A great job by Wimley calling for a successful pitch out. Jim Fry did not think he would do it.
- 3:55Not to put on the field, but with that pitch out, he had a perfect shot. You don't see double pitch outs on a two one count to go to three and one very often.
- 4:05And the element of surprise was there from their standpoint. Absolutely. So now it's Sandberg with a three one count. Wimley really got rid of that ball and put it right down there from a master right on the bag.
- 4:19Swinging high, bounce his third, big hop, young blood, fires in the dirt. But Oliver comes up with that play. Oliver made a good play on a tricky hopper into the dirt.
- 4:29And that's not Oliver. He has no sense of making that play. It was an overhand pass throw from young blood that hit right on the edge of the grass.
- 4:38And Oliver makes the play protecting himself, I believe. All right, here is Gary Matthews. He's only played one game with a gun, but with a trinket.
- 4:47He's a veteran who's being counted upon to come over here and provide some stock. Add some more leadership as well. He stands deep in the batter's box.
- 4:57Leads out over the plate straight away, stands down the little ball and it's one and oh, nobody on and two down. Cubs and Giants.
- 5:06Milo Hamilton and Lou Boudreau with you on Cubs radio from Candlestick. And here is the one oh to Matthews. Off speed, tried to check it, couldn't.
- 5:16Swinging strike one and one. Straight change. He changes off the fastball. One ball, one strike. And here is the pitch down low and it is two and one.
- 5:31Gnerst started it off with a solid single back through the middle. With caught stealing, then Sandberg bounced the third. So it's two down and nobody on. The two one pitch. Low inside, he's gone to three and one on the second straight hitter.
- 5:46Now this pitch will tell us whether they are going to make Matthews try to go after an off speed or a breaking pitch. They've kept the fastball low and away to him.
- 5:58Now he's ready again looking in to get his sign from Brenly. Outfield playing into full in all three positions. Three balls and a strike. Pitch on the way.
- 6:09Swinging and a foul back to the right. First souvenir for the fans and it's a full count to Matthews. They do up next.
- 6:18The Biro's in off date. We'll be back Thursday night. Rainey will go against Kruko. Three balls, two strikes, two down. Pitch on the way. Low when he walks in.
- 6:31Kept keeping that ball down on Matthews. But he kept it too low and ends up walking him and it will bring up third baseman Ryan Say. And these fans remember how he used to punish them when he was with the Dodgers.
- 6:43He gets booed as he gets to the batter's box.
- 6:51Want to welcome one of our new network stations coming aboard this year. KFBT in Davenport, Iowa. They'll be carrying all of our games.
- 7:02Little sentiment there for me. That's where it all started.
- 7:06Well I started in Iowa too. Cedar Rapids.
- 7:10Little wild fish. He threw it in the dirt. And Matthews will get the suck it easily.
- 7:17It's great to have the folks out in Davenport and the Quad City area and KFBT joining our CUB network.
- 7:24And if we're going to pass out of OK, we've got a chance right here good kid. As Herms Durette comes out to stock to the Gen Westies.
- 7:32This CUB network today with 44 stations. That's triple what it was when Jack Rosenberg and Vince Lloyd started setting this thing up.
- 7:41And it's great to see the job they've done and have all these stations on with us and know that all these folks will be listening around the middle west.
- 7:49Seven states are involved. It's by west. It's Coolidge, Arizona. Omaha. And it's great to have all the new stations with us this year.
- 7:58And they want to welcome them. All right the conference over. Herms Durette is back into the dugout.
- 8:07Ron Stay waiting. One ball no strike. Gary Matthews second base.
- 8:11Let's see if we can take advantage of the wild fish. A hit to get you on the board.
- 8:15High and away with his fastball. And it's 2-0 to the Penguins. Keith Wharland due up next.
- 8:24If you're in the sun here it's very comfortable. Big clouds. Not much wind at the moment. It's not three o'clock yet.
- 8:35Whoa and he falls behind him 3-0. Only the fine decision by Friendly on the count of 2-1 to Sandberg to throw out to near has kept the Cubs from scoring thus far.
- 8:49All right here we are on a 3-0. Now they're going to put him on. This will go as an intentional pass even though they didn't elect to do it until the board won.
- 8:55The giant is going to come this break. Fry has been with the type of manager that has been letting his ball crook go after the 3-0 pitch.
- 8:59I think they thought that with this cozy left field fence and power alley they weren't going to give him a chance to go after a 3-0 pitch.
- 9:05So Robinson knowing that felt that the 3-0 pitch green light was on for safe and the Cubs were going to be in the lead.
- 9:12Fry has been with the type of manager that has been letting his ball crook go after the 3-0 pitch. So Robinson knowing that felt that the 3-0 pitch green light was on for safe with two outs here in the first inning so they decided to walk it.
- 9:28Marlin with a chance to get the run home now. Matthews second, Bay first. A walk and an intentional walk and a wild pitch in between strikes to Marlin.
- 9:38Marlin ended up with the eighth hitter in the league last year with 3-0-2, 16 homers, 70 RBIs.
- 9:45He's starting today since Bay are starting a lefty. When the right hander crook goes 30 Mel Hall will be in right feet.
- 9:520-1 to Marlin. Swinging, line drive left. Right at Leonard. Side retire. Hit hard, but right at it. If he got under that a little we'd have had some cheer in him.
- 10:04It would have been gone. We play the half an inning. Cubs do not score one hit. They leave a couple. So after a half an inning the Cubs are strong with one hit and the Giants are just now coming into bat.
- 10:20Chevrolet, picking charge. Chevrolet invites you to take charge of one hot car. The hottest selling Chevrolet today. The new 84 Cavalier. Take charge in a two foot front drive way.
- 10:37With a fun to drive Chevrolet for today. Cavalier. Zero in on the new styling that gives it a clean shape and even cleaner look for 84. It's hot.
- 10:50Fire up two liters of high compression electronically fuel injected power. More horsepower than the three leading imports.
- 10:58Get up knowing Cavalier's onboard computer is constantly working to keep your engine in tune. Feel the performance of the hottest selling Chevrolet today.
- 11:07Picking charge. See the hot Cavalier with a cool low price. And the other new Chevrolet that's your Chevy dealer's now.
- 11:16Chevrolet. And you. Hi, I'm Dr. John Pontilloni, a Digestive Specialist from Chicago. Believe me, I get plenty of chances to see what stress can do to our well being.
- 11:32That's why we all need a balanced diet of nutrient dense foods like pork. Because pork gives us lots of protein, key vitamins, and trace elements our body needs to cope with everyday stress.
- 11:43So take my advice. Enjoy it all.
- 11:46America, you're leading us all.
- 11:50Delicious thoughts from the National Pork Producers Council.
- 11:59Ready to work.
- 12:14Their coaches Danny Ozarks. Third base. Don Hufford at first. And the leadoff hitter is Johnny LaMouser.
- 12:30And it's in for a strike right across the letters.
- 12:33And he really uses those other pitches to set it up. Yes, indeed. That was a good fastball.
- 12:45Little low outside for the breaking pitch. And the count is even in one and one. The Cubs open their home season against the Mets with a big three game series on Friday, April 13. Saturday, April 14. Sunday, April 15. Calendar weekend. Breaking pitches in and he took it for a strike in his one and two.
- 13:06Every fan who attends the Saturday or Sunday game and opening weekend will receive the Cubs 84 calendar.
- 13:13One ball, two strikes. LaMouser waiting. Right hand hitter. Straight away stance. The pitch from Ruthven. Low of all. And it's two and two.
- 13:23This handsome calendar features the 84 home and away schedule. Ticket info. Great action photography. Much more.
- 13:30So include Cubs calendar weekend. Your plans on April 14 and 15. Be sure to get your tickets in advance.
- 13:37Low outside and he's gone full with LaMouser.
- 13:43All right, now he's showing that breaking stuff low and away. Let's see if he goes to the fastball for his out pitch here.
- 13:50He got one by him for an opening pitch.
- 13:53He does. You'll probably come up and in on him.
- 13:56But he's had a breaking ball and he hung in a little. LaMouser went right with it to right field for a line drive single.
- 14:02He's out in front of that ball, but he changed up on his own and that's where he's placed it. He just poked it to right.
- 14:10So both lead off hitters reach.
- 14:14The master at first with a single. Manny Trio.
- 14:18Former Cubs. Philly. Cleveland Indian. Montreal Expo.
- 14:24Good solid ball player.
- 14:27The players will not wait long. They're both aggressive so we can look for a hit run at any time here with Trio at best.
- 14:36Threats went over. LaMouser fakes a break, doesn't go and Trio fakes a bust, took a strike.
- 14:43Now that brought Stay moving up a little bit at third base.
- 14:48To a couple of years ago and the Cubs didn't as much as anybody they ran on him, but he's really shortened up that stretch.
- 14:58And a breaking pitch inside. He barely comes to the letters.
- 15:02We're in a set position now. This is right. He holds that club with a in hand with a ball in it almost in front of his face.
- 15:10One ball, one strike to Trio. Jack Clark two up next.
- 15:13LaMouser with a lead off single has it. Lead at first. Durham holding against him.
- 15:19Now Ruthven will step away because LaMouser was yacking around and moved back toward the bag.
- 15:25And Ruthven wants Jody to slide over with the sign.
- 15:29Runner going. Pitch on the way. Jody's throw will be way in the center field.
- 15:34LaMouser's up. He may try to come to third. He will be there.
- 15:39LaMouser near came in hard. Fired. But LaMouser got up quickly. LaMouser hesitated at all.
- 15:46They might have had a shot at him. But once the ball went on in the center, LaMouser got up and came right over.
- 15:52The throw was high and it went off of Stanberg's glove.
- 15:55Had Stanberg missed that ball and the near was in the proper spot he would have thrown LaMouser out.
- 16:02When he reached up that hand and grabbed that high throw by Davis, it just paramed off of his glove and floated up getting good in the air.
- 16:10So they've got a runner at third and nobody out. Jody Davis muscled up on that throw and it stalled.
- 16:17Took off. And as a result, stolen base and an E2 runner third, nobody out.
- 16:23A baby hit in the right field. A 2-1 pitch at 3-0 who goes that well as anybody in this league went right there again.
- 16:35Yes, yes. He saw the hole over there. Get the fastball and then once again the two hitters for the Giants here in the first inning going to the opposite field on Rufus.
- 16:48They're going to be topping San Francisco. Wark the batter.
- 16:55Wark and manager Robinson have had their differences.
- 16:59They've tried to patch them up even to the extent of doing some comical commercials for the ball club that we've been seeing here the last couple of days.
- 17:08He's the kind of a player who can carry a club and the first pitch to him high inside of all.
- 17:16He was a great hitter in the summers last year. He had a great spring, 375 average.
- 17:23That was an unlimited play because he was hurt early in spring training.
- 17:32A stretch pitch by Ruthven. Hit him on the fifth, popped him over to the right. Durham has the play and Durham squeezes it.
- 17:39Boy, what a pitch and a power hitter.
- 17:41Well, the first two hitters that we mentioned went to the opposite field with Ruthven's curveball.
- 17:48So now he comes in and jams that powerful hitter with a good fastball.
- 17:54Bring up Al Oliver.
- 17:59He's been a great player with the Pirates, the Texas Rangers and Montreal.
- 18:04He's come over here now and he gives them some stock at first base.
- 18:09He's a veteran who can still run, might be in as good a physical shape as anybody playing baseball today.
- 18:16An off-speed pitch for an opener, Oliver looks at it up high of all.
- 18:21Oliver had a 435 spring. He is certainly a great hitter.
- 18:27Won a batting title two years ago with the Montreal Expos.
- 18:31He's a dangerous left-hand hitter. He can pull it, he can spray it.
- 18:36Line fouled on the left side above the start, short of our bullpen.
- 18:40And the count is one and one.
- 18:43A single by LaMaster, stolen base throwing Aragiotti.
- 18:46Trio got LaMaster home. Clark popped up. So it's one to nothing Giants.
- 18:51The runner at first is Manny Trio and the count to Al Oliver, a bull and a strike.
- 18:57Jeff Leonard is due up next. Ruthven ready.
- 19:00Stretch pitch, swing and a foul. Boy, he sawed the bat off right in his hands with that baby.
- 19:05This fastball has been his best pitch here early this fall game.
- 19:08I wish he'd have thrown one to LaMaster.
- 19:10Right. He's strong and he's fooled the Giants on fastballs and consequently Davis is staying with him.
- 19:18One ball, two strikes. Oliver waiting, batting from the left side.
- 19:24Trio at first doesn't take a big lead. Now he's etched away another step.
- 19:30Ruthven ready, stretching, looking back, runner not going, pitch on the way.
- 19:36And that pitch rolled in and hit Oliver.
- 19:39And he wanted to. He was trying to pitch him tight again and just rolled right in on him and got him.
- 19:45That was a fastball inside. It just paid Oliver for quite a while.
- 19:51New York Yankees are playing at Kansas City. They've played eight innings in Kansas City for the Yankees 2.
- 20:02Remember, we'll have our scoreboard after the game.
- 20:06Trainer out, Oliver trying to walk it off.
- 20:17Right above the knee maybe, huh?
- 20:19Yes.
- 20:24Jeff Leonard the batter. Really came on strong for this club a year ago. 21 homers and 87 runs batted in.
- 20:32Ball lanky outfielded.
- 20:36Line drive hitter who obviously found himself some power last year with 21 homers.
- 20:42Bouncer deep short. Bolo will go to second. Go to first.
- 20:46No, it really wasn't a good double play and I want to mention something that really took it away from a double play that Lou and I talked about before the game.
- 20:55Bolo going to the hole, had no chance to set up. You saw his feet flip in that horrible infield.
- 21:01Absolutely. He could not get his footing consequently. He could not throw the ball with any speed at all to Sandberg. It cost us a double play.
- 21:12So you've got runners on the corners. Oliver was erased on the force from Bolo to Sandberg.
- 21:18Leonard's at first and Manny Trio is the runner at third. The batter, center fielder.
- 21:26Well, they've got Youngblood hitting in front of Davis. They made a change here.
- 21:30And the scoreboard operator doesn't even know it. The lineup card out there doesn't even know it.
- 21:36This is Youngblood. That had to happen when they handed in the lineup card, didn't it? Yes, indeed. The only way it could have happened.
- 21:44So Youngblood is the batter. And the pitch to him is a ball. Shilly Davis then is on deck.
- 21:55Runners at first and third. Giants are leading 1-0. Ruthven having a long, troublesome inning here.
- 22:01Two hits and an error. It, Batsman, pitch on the way. High inside with a breaking ball with something off of it.
- 22:08That is two balls, no strike.
- 22:14Ruthven taking a look around before he goes down in to get the sign from Jody Davis.
- 22:19Trio third. Leonard first. Pitch on the way. Swing and they miss. A good swifty down and away from him.
- 22:28If you're going to throw Youngblood a fastball, you really got to keep it down and away because if you get anything up in the middle of the plate, he'll hurt you.
- 22:39Go to first, not close. Leonard dives back safely.
- 22:45Moreland shading Youngblood a little toward right center. Durnier a little toward left center. And Matthew's playing him to pull all the way.
- 22:55Two one fifth. Swinging. Bouncer's toward third. Sadie long throw across. Got him. And with all that trouble, out-subtle for the one run.
- 23:03Oh, indeed.
- 23:07The Giants get on the board with one run. Two hits, one error. It, Batsman, they leave a couple. And after one inning, it's the Giants one and the Terrence nothing.

- 24:05Dial 434-4426. That's 434-4426. Or contact the Taulman Home Regional Lending Office at 55th and Ketchy, 4901 West Irving Park, or in this plane, Oakland or Peoria.
- 24:24Dictaphone makes a complete line of professional portable dictating machines. They're incredibly small, amazingly versatile, and make working on the run a lot less of a runaround.
- 24:38Call your Dictaphone representative today, because when it comes to portable dictation, Dictaphone stands alone.
- 24:45We have a way of working, standing alone with Dictaphone.
- 24:55All right, we go to the second inning. Jody Davis will be leading it off to the Cubs. She'll be followed by Durham and then Larry Boa.
- 25:12Lionel Hamilton and Lou Boudreau with Cubs baseball from Candlestick in San Francisco. We've got a final from Kansas City. The Royals beat the Yankees 4-2. The Yankees only got three hits in that ballgame.
- 25:27Black was the winning pitcher, Miles. Susan Berry ended in the eighth to shut the Yankees out for the last inning.
- 25:34Downster, shortstop, over to his left. LaMaster picks it, had a little trouble with it, threw it away, and Oliver fell down and almost got hurt. If Jody Davis hadn't hurtled him, there would have been a heck of a collision right there.
- 25:47Here again, LaMaster losing his footing. At second base, he moved over, caught the ball, and when he tried to straighten up and set his back foot, his right foot's a throw, it flipped on him.
- 25:59They're scoring it as a hit.
- 26:05With Jody Davis down for the leadoff single, the bat is the bull, Leon Durham.
- 26:15Durham last year played in only a hundred games. Injuries kept him from seeing a lot of action.
- 26:23Still has 12 homers and 55 ribbies, swing and a miss with a breaking ball. With the left-handers starting, more San Francisco, Durham dropped down to the seventh spot.
- 26:33Oh, a due effect. Our ballgame is in the second. The Giants 1-1, 2 hits, the Cubs are scoreless with two hits.
- 26:44Davis, nice agreement, stretches, looks to first, swinging, a shot to second, double play ball. Trillo clips LaMaster one, first base, wins, a double play.
- 26:53Taylor May, double play. Trillo, LaMaster, Oliver, they turned it perfectly.
- 26:59They could have asked for a better double play ball as it was hit solidly right to Trillo. He didn't have to move.
- 27:06And his Trillo flip, LaMaster made it easy.
- 27:12Now here is Larry Boa. Boa has switch hitter.
- 27:20Got a fine here last year. Golden Globe Award.
- 27:26And here's the first pitch to Boa. Swing and a foul up to the right side.
- 27:32I should like to have Boa get on here. If for no other reason than to have Ruthland bat in the innings so that you can start with the top of your order in the next inning, if it turns out that way.
- 27:44Here's the 0-1 to Boa. Cubs captain looks at a high fastball and the count is even at 1-1. The hits are even at 2, the Giants lead 1-0.
- 27:53What error belongs to the Cubs in the help of the Giants 2, the 1-0 lead?
- 27:59Fastball missing outside. Two balls and a strike.
- 28:05Mark Davis. Blue talked about opening day and butterflies. You can bet he had some.
- 28:13Here's the 2-1. Fly ball out into left center. That ball's pretty well stroked. It's going to carry over Billy Davis.
- 28:21The Cubs are still aheading for second and as he looks at the ball being brought in, he will take a short turn at second and hold with a double.
- 28:29First extra base hit of the season for the Cubs by Larry Boa.
- 28:37Got a little more pop when he bats from the right side.
- 28:42Now here is Dick Ruthland. This Dick can help himself.
- 28:48He's playing with the runner at second. Two down. Giants leading 1-0. First game of a two game series.
- 28:54First game of a seven game road trip. Two here, three in San Diego over the weekend and two early next week with the Dodgers.
- 29:01The Cubs will be home Friday the 13th to open against the Mets followed by the Cardinals and then the Pirates.
- 29:11Stretch looks back. Pitch to Ruthven. Swing and a foul. He was up there ripping. He was looking for the fast ball.
- 29:18He got the fast ball right down the middle and just fouled it back. He'd like to have that pitch back.
- 29:28No balls. One strike. Ruthven waiting. Look back by Davis. Pitch on the way. Big swing and a miss.
- 29:37I think that was his flair. It could have been. He moved on Ruthven. He couldn't believe it.
- 29:45No balls. Two strikes. Hope that the folks at Newcastle, Indiana, join the game on WJNZ FM. Swing and a miss.
- 29:55Ruthven strikes out. First strike out for Davis. Side retires. No runs and a couple of hits.
- 30:03No errors. Double plays. Four who doubled was left. But after an inning and a half, Giants won Cubs nothing.
- 30:11Before Frank's my yard was such a mess. Even the squirrels were embarrassed to be seen in it.
- 30:18The grass was too ashen to show its face. The trees turned their backs to me.
- 30:24And the garden was so bad even the bees wouldn't sprout. It was a nightmare.
- 30:31And then I went to Frank's.
- 30:38After Frank's your gardening nightmares will be gone.

- 31:01Makes your lawn come up rich and full now just $9.74.
- 31:05To be followed by Brenway and then the pitcher, Martin.
- 31:09Side of our season of Wrigley Field will be entertaining three Eastern Division clubs.
- 31:14The Mets open our home season with a big three game weekend series beginning on Friday, April 13.
- 31:19Whitey Herzog and the Cardinals come to town for three midweek games beginning through the April 17.
- 31:25The first home stand concludes with a three game weekend series with the Pirates.
- 31:29Plenty of action that first home stand. Should have made you glance out of it with us.
- 31:33And to first hit your ticket in advance.
- 31:35First pitch to Chili Davis is a strike call.
- 31:47In September of Kansas City, his two home runs, one home run, it was his first.
- 32:00And I guess he figured if Davis could hit one for the Reds yesterday, he'd hit one for the Royals today, good kids.
- 32:11They only had 10,006 for that ball again?
- 32:17Isn't that unbelievable?
- 32:18Isn't that unbelievable in Kansas City with the Yankees? 10,006 opening game.
- 32:24Well they got rained on yesterday, maybe that hurt them.
- 32:27Strike call right across the knees.
- 32:30Boy, I tell you, you talk about a buzz bomb in a perfect place.
- 32:34He just simply blew the ball by, Chili Davis.
- 32:37Look out, my observation that this is the best fastball that Bruce has had all spring.
- 32:43Even though he's trailed one to nothing.
- 32:46Well with that little nip out here, the pitcher's got to feel strong, doesn't he?
- 32:51Yes, indeed.
- 32:53Here's Bob Friendly, the catcher.
- 32:56Friendly bounding with nobody on and one away.
- 32:58We're in the bottom of the second, Giants bounding leading one to nothing line.
- 33:02He's up off the top of the glove of a leaping dog, goes down into the bullpen.
- 33:07Orland has to go over to get it, and Friendly is standing for the double.
- 33:11He's twice a hard line drive to the right side.
- 33:14Durham leaps as high as he could, might have just hit that big first baseman's claw.
- 33:19Then it's spun over into the right field bullpen and scatters the Giants bullpen numbers, and it's a double for Friendly.
- 33:25Another good fastball, there's an indication how a defense will set up now early in this ball game.
- 33:32With Ruthland using that good fastball, right-handed hitters are not pulling him.
- 33:37The left-handed hitters will go to the opposite field.
- 33:40Now maybe in the fifth, sixth, or seventh inning, if Ruthland is still out there,
- 33:45he may change his style of pitching and go to the breaking pitch.
- 33:49Mark Davis, the pitcher with the runner at second, swings away and does his job right there
- 33:55because he bounced it to the right side where Friendly can get over easily
- 34:00and will bring up LaMaster with a runner 90 feet away from home.
- 34:08So Sandberg throws out Mark Davis.
- 34:12It advances Friendly from second to third, and LaMaster, who had a base hit in the first inning,
- 34:18still with a, what's a third on the throwing error when Davis couldn't throw him out
- 34:23and Goad on a Manning 3-0 single is stepping in.
- 34:29The Lewis-Harris family of San Mateo out here cheering for the Cubs, obviously former Chicagoans.
- 34:39They're going to see several of our games on the west coast, and we'll see a lot of that when we're out here.
- 34:43A lot of transplanted Chicagoans and Midwesterners when we play in San Fran, San Diego, and Los Angeles.
- 34:52LaMaster, one for one, a pitch to him, a breaking ball in for his strike goal.
- 34:58Manning 3-0 on deck.
- 35:07Hits are even at 3. Giants lead in the score 1-0. Ruthman winding, delivering.
- 35:13A little outside. Good stop of that ball in the dirt by Jody.
- 35:17Jody followed that ball to the right, went to his knees to be sure that it didn't get away from him.
- 35:25The runner had to remain at third base.
- 35:28One ball, one strike. Friendly up the line at third.
- 35:32Here's the pitch from Ruthman, swinging a bouncer. Good stop, charging. Bowers right in the bag.
- 35:37Myers got him by a step, and the side has been retired this way by Larry Bowers.
- 35:42With LaMaster, who runs pretty well, nifty with the wire. No runs, one hit.
- 35:48No errors, one left.
- 35:50We have played two innings in the 84 opener for these two props, and the Giants lead the Cubs 1-0.
- 36:20In the third inning of Candle 6, Bob DeNear leaps it off against Mark Davis.
- 36:38The first pitch to him shows Bunt takes the strike.
- 36:43Bob DeNear will be a special project of Jimmy Fry, who has been known as a good hitting instructor.
- 36:51Here's the pitch. And high inside with a fastball, one and one.
- 36:56He'll leave him alone for a few days, see what he does on his own.
- 37:01Here's a ball and a strike.
- 37:04LaMaster waits back with a fastball running, but still got him by a step. Good throw by LaMaster.
- 37:13Here is out George the First, LaMaster to Al Oliver.
- 37:16The infielders will have to do just what LaMaster did.
- 37:20Wait for that ball, and gamble on getting rid of it quickly and throwing, instead of trying to move in on that soft stand.
- 37:28Because both yard stops have shown us already that it's going to be tough for those spikes to dig in for you here today.
- 37:35Ryan Sandberg bounce the third in the first inning.
- 37:39Ryan will up here 0-1.
- 37:42Low inside with a fastball, and it is 1-0 to Sandberg. Matthews due up next.
- 37:48WJNCFM, Green Castle, Indiana, among our network stations with us for this opening game.
- 37:59Forty-four stations on the Cuff Network as we get underway today.
- 38:05All over the Midwest.
- 38:08And we have a few room for some more.
- 38:11Why, it's their joint. Please look to have your joint.
- 38:15One ball, one strike. Go fish. High outside with a fastball. 2-1.
- 38:27Now he's ready again. Young left-hander, 23 years old, earned that starting assignment with a great spring and finish.
- 38:35Bounce the foul off here to the left, Sandberg, and it's 2-2.
- 38:40Well, there's a constant buzz here today because this place is nearly full.
- 38:492-2. Sandberg, after fouling it off, steps back up in there straightaway.
- 38:54The Golden Gloves second baseman of a year ago waiting on Mark Davis.
- 38:59The left-hander kicks the deal to 2-2.
- 39:02Off she goes, followed it up to the right side.
- 39:06Get it out of the box over there where Tom Haller, the general manager of the Giants.
- 39:13Old sport.
- 39:17Tell you one thing about Tom Haller, he's willing to make a move, isn't he?
- 39:22Yes, he is.
- 39:232-2, swinging, bouncer, right of trio, backhand, throws in the air.
- 39:29Safe! Sandberg, beat it out.
- 39:32The trio credit for a great effort, but they just didn't figure going that far to the right that trio could throw out Sandberg.
- 39:39No, not at all. Sandberg's going down that line very fast.
- 39:43I was looking for a trio to flip it to Lamaster who cut in front of them.
- 39:48Four hits for the Cubs. They lead in the hit column 4-3, but are down 1-0 in the score, and here is Gary Matthews.
- 39:56Matthews walked in the first inning.
- 39:58Faye is on deck, third inning, Candlesick Park, San Francisco, first game in a two-game series.
- 40:05Open day tomorrow, we play here Thursday night.
- 40:09Stretch looked the first, hits to Gary Matthews, strike called over the outside corner.
- 40:13Matthews started right here at the Giants, went to Atlanta, then on to Philadelphia, became a Cub a few days ago.
- 40:23In the opening day lineup in left field.
- 40:26Sandberg with a big lead, and I'll tell you, I had to figure a kill down over there, if you'll tell me please.
- 40:33With that kind of a lead, he just wasn't going to let him stay out that far.
- 40:37Not many ball clubs have it in here, or Sandberg getting 1-2, Shiloh.
- 40:42Now, let's throw to first base.
- 40:44Boy, if DeNiro can do it and play every day, we'll see those two manufacture some runs.
- 40:51Oh, yes indeed.
- 40:53No balls, one strike, look over again, and a throw over that way, close, he dives back and makes it.
- 41:00Sandberg slipped somewhat, trying to get back.
- 41:04Just what you said, it not only affects the defensive infielders with this shot going, but it also affects that base, would-be base stealer.
- 41:13Zip hit, swinging, bounce it toward third, young blood in, Glockman, got to go to first base, out at first.
- 41:19On the play, Sandberg moves to second.
- 41:23The young blood charges, throws out Gary Matthews, third to first.
- 41:28And while we're waiting for Say to step in and friendly have a little chat with Mark Davis, we'll pause right here on the WGN Chicago Cubs Baseball Network.
- 41:39This is WGN Radio Chicago, is the Northwest Toeway driving in us, we're flying off to Jim Cavanaugh and John Camden, report on traffic 23 times a day.
- 41:51Ross Say taking some time stepping back in, Milo Hamilton and Lou Boudreaux with you in the early innings.
- 41:57Harry Carey will come along later.
- 42:01Milo, the first three innings, we've had a man in scoring position.
- 42:05We've got to start picking up those men, get some runs, can't let those opportunities slipping by continue.
- 42:11And Say looks at an off-speed pick for one, didn't miss by much.
- 42:19Sandberg with good speed at second, Say was walked intentionally in the first inning, Davis fell to behind him, 3-0, and then the bench ordered to go ahead and walk him.
- 42:29Here's the fifth, swinging in a high hop, hop behind first, second baseman going over Oliver now as he is about 10 feet off the line, has it, and the side has been retired.
- 42:41Say popping in foul ground about 60 feet behind first and about 10 feet foul, and so it's no runs, one hit, no errors, and Sandberg left.
- 42:53We're in the middle of the third at California's Candlestick Park for the Giants, and the Giants lead the Cubs 1-0.
- 43:00Say ended spring with a string batting swing right now.
- 43:04At Evans, all the string dressing needs, plus with 15 coats too, are now at Evans, the 10th of May.
- 43:18In the bottom of the third, Manny Creo, who drove in the only one in the game to this moment with an RBI single in the first inning, will step in to lead it off.
- 43:29Straightaway stance, looks at the pitch down and away, ball one.
- 43:34Creo will be followed by Clark and then Oliver.
- 43:42Here's the 1-0 from Roosman, and a strike call to good fastball up around the letter.
- 43:48Frank Robinson, I don't think it's that he has helped to in the defense by firing Creo, and he's helped his offense by training Bateson.
- 43:581-1, bounce it right back down, knocked down by Roosman, grass throws, got him, ball hit hard, didn't bounce into Roosman's glove plainly,
- 44:08got a ball out in front of him, but he gets it and throws him out, and of course the play for Oliver.
- 44:13Here's Jack Clark, he pops up to the first base of the door in the opening inning.
- 44:24Remember after the game, we'll have our scoreboard, and in Chicago there should be some time left for Uncle Bobby.
- 44:31Oh yes, boy I wish we could hear that.
- 44:35Are you leading Goose?
- 44:38He used to lead.
- 44:42Yes, a great temptation when we're on the road to have him save Bobby Collins-Kill and Nailor too, because it's customary.
- 44:49Swing and a miss.
- 44:51We listen to him every day when we leave Chicago, when he's on and when he's off too.
- 44:57No ball, two strikes.
- 45:00No matter, Roosman has moved out in front of his dangerous right fielder Jack Clark.
- 45:06Here is the 0-2 pitch.
- 45:08Swing and a ball, and up the middle he hit it out to the pitch.
- 45:11Roosman would like to have that ball.
- 45:13They made it a state.
- 45:15Tired the ball, lit it high over the plate.
- 45:20Even at four, Clark is on with a single, and it brings up now Oliver, who was hit by a pitch to move time up.
- 45:35John Buford having a close shot with Clark at first.
- 45:40Now Oliver the batter.
- 45:42Guy has one run, four hits, cuts scoreless with four hits.
- 45:46Roosman's in the stretch, pitch on the way to Oliver, swing sends a high pop left side.
- 45:51Coming back to coach's box, Bob Faye, he squeezes it, the pen went and came right over,
- 45:57made the play, a very high pop up, a good pass ball right on Oliver's pitch.
- 46:03Good thing those clouds that were around here yesterday weren't here today,
- 46:07if you want to know how high that pop up was, that might have brought Wayne up to work out yesterday.
- 46:12Here's how it'll bring up Jeff Leonard.
- 46:16I thought for a moment they wouldn't make the Cubs work out because of the condition of the field.
- 46:24Well Dallas Drain came with the club and we walked out of the field waiting for the players to dress,
- 46:31and he walked over that end field, but it's just as bad as they wrote that it was.
- 46:40The two way runner at first point went into batter, hits by Roosman, swing, high drive left,
- 46:46coming over to Matthew, he'll grab it on the line and the side is the inside.
- 46:50Well hit ball by Leonard, Matthew's got a good break on it, going toward the line,
- 46:55holds it in, so runs, one hit, now there's one left.
- 47:00Alright good kid, hold it down here, I'll see you a little later on.
- 47:04Very bad. We played three innings and the Jazz Weed the Cubs 1-0.
- 47:27Gentlemen, gentlemen.
- 47:29We're at score, and five of those teams are very slight groups.
- 47:41Combinations.
- 47:48Have you received a bonus weight of interest on the individual assignment account at Calvin Hall
- 47:53with a new deposit of $2,000, agitated for either the 1980s or 1984 Jazz Weeds.
- 48:00Calvin will give you a bonus of one half of one percent when you open a one year IRA,
- 48:05or a bonus of one quarter of one percent when you open a longer term IRA.
- 48:10So come in, make your IRA deposit at Calvin Hall.
- 48:26Hello again everybody, now it's time for the good news all.
- 48:30As we go down to the top of the board, one minute off the stand, and the Giants losing it off
- 48:34with a deep baller behind Howard Jua and Ethel Mersimmi.
- 48:40One's enough for the Jazz Weeds to pitch a fast ball running away from the right hand hitter.
- 48:46Half a count, two balls and a strike, bounce on half.
- 48:50Beautiful afternoon in San Francisco.
- 48:54Opening day 1984.
- 48:57Two balls and a strike, here's Patricia Morley.
- 49:01One ball, nine drops, let's see if that even works.
- 49:06Beautiful ball.
- 49:10Very nice catch by Leonard DeBauw.
- 49:13Looked like they were going into the corner.
- 49:16It stayed up for him and he had to make the great backhand attack.
- 49:20He had a good jump on that ball, it was in hard into the corner, but he made the catch easily.
- 49:27The winner, Portland's hit, the two hardest balls of the day, is Jody Davis.
- 49:36The Harry were getting minutes scoring position, but we just can't get that pace hit at the right time.
- 49:42That's a very familiar and sad lament, isn't it, too, in baseball lore.
- 49:51And that's the difference between winners and losers, that it's when it counts.
- 49:57One arm over the yard, there's no long way to go.
- 50:01One to nothing Giants, the pitch on the way.
- 50:05Jody Davis takes the strike off.
- 50:08That evens it up a ball from the stripes, it comes around the arm one week from Friday.
- 50:14Friday the 13th against the Mets.
- 50:17We have a weeklong swing on the West Coast.
- 50:21Ground ball up the middle, Lamaski's got it over the first of the yard.
- 50:27And I tell you, Mark Davis, who was in trouble in the first inning, has really settled down now,
- 50:33whatever the opening day EBJV is, he's overcome him.
- 50:39That's right, and the rest of the pitching coach went up in to settle him down.
- 50:44One play in that first inning.
- 50:48With a speeding Dernier at first, and a count, two balls and a strike on Sandberg.
- 50:53A natural hit-and-run pitch.
- 50:56Now the delivery, a little bit high to Durham.
- 50:59I say natural because seldom will a catcher call for a pitch out, which would make the count three and one.
- 51:06Now the delivery, low and outside, but that's exactly what Bob Brenley did, and Dernier was thrown out.
- 51:13That's the difference of this ball game.
- 51:16Instead of having a big first inning, the Cubs got nothing.
- 51:20There's a pitch into the dirt.
- 51:23Ball three.
- 51:25Three balls, no strikes, two out, nobody on, Larry Bowe up next.
- 51:30Bowe had doubled over Chilly Davis' head his first time up.
- 51:35One to nothing, the Giants are leading the ball game on the top of the fourth.
- 51:40Here's the pitch.
- 51:42It's a little low and away.
- 51:46And that is the second base on balls given up by Davis, a 23-year-old left-hander who, too, used to be with the Phillies, makes up the third base on balls.
- 51:58One was intentional.
- 52:04He has sanded only one and that was Ruffin.
- 52:08There now is Larry Bowe up, two minutes out.
- 52:16Now the pitch, here it is, swung off, five balls, right center field, nobody doubles.
- 52:21That ball's going to go to the wall.
- 52:23Here's the time, run around third base.
- 52:25He's racing for the plate.
- 52:27Bowe has come through again.
- 52:29Hey, nice going there, hey.
- 52:30With his second double of the afternoon to tie up the ball game one and one.
- 52:35And you know, Larry Bowe is relative to many of his friends from nearby Sacramento.
- 52:43His original hometown.
- 52:45Are here to see him today.
- 52:47It's very difficult where that power comes from if you keep swinging the bat.
- 52:53So there's Larry Bowe with his second double.
- 52:57A long drive to right center.
- 53:00This game is tied up with a two-out to one to the left-hand-hitting Durham,
- 53:07the only left-hand-hitter in the lineup today.
- 53:10I think the RBI double by Larry Bowe is Ruffin.
- 53:18The pitch.
- 53:19Into the dirt, gets away, but here comes Bowe trying to third base and he makes it.
- 53:26No pitch.
- 53:30Second one of the day for the kid on the mound.
- 53:33Well, I'd like to see another one right now.
- 53:35I would too.
- 53:37Another point here, it means that how important that double was to Bowe,
- 53:41not only tying up the ball game and giving him his second double of the day,
- 53:45but it brings Ruffin to bat.
- 53:47Yeah, good point.
- 53:50Either of these should not hit, now you start with the top of your batting order next to me,
- 53:56whether an automatic first out, which the pitcher usually is,
- 54:00and who's going to hit that on that?
- 54:03There's the smash, to the shortstop,
- 54:05Bowe's first point, he covers through.
- 54:08And now Oliver comes up with a terrible throw,
- 54:12a great play by Oliver that cost the cuts a lot.
- 54:16Oh, I like the second pitch, kept his base on a throw into the dirt.
- 54:22He's not normally known for those great plays.
- 54:26One run, one hit, no errors, one left.
- 54:29At the end of three and a half, all tied up in one.
- 54:33More of the best, it's a commitment.
- 54:48Today, the best sometimes ever is reality, bringing you more every day,
- 54:53more fast-breaking news, more local news, more coverage and more to read on everything
- 54:58from business and fashion to food and the latest in entertainment.
- 55:12Harry Kelly with Luke Woodrow, we're going down to the bottom half,
- 55:15before setting off tied up one-one, the cuts are about near the five to four.
- 55:20The only end of the ball is the charge to the cuffs.
- 55:24Now Oliver has saved Johnny Lamas for two errors already on great plays on short,
- 55:30hot, low throws.
- 55:32And that loss with Lewis particularly damaging because he cut the cuffs,
- 55:37but he's in the lead.
- 55:38Yes, indeed.
- 55:40I thought Ruth would have a very fine opportunity to keep the play,
- 55:44not only keep the play, but that's why I saw the low throw,
- 55:47that part was a pitch.
- 55:49Here we go now with the old young blood.
- 55:57Young blood who has a 315 lifetime batting average against the cuffs.
- 56:03Both he and Lamas do.
- 56:05This becomes pitching better than they do anybody else's pitching.
- 56:10Now the one at the pitch, there's a slider and whip and roll, one ball no strike.
- 56:17We're in the fourth, big crowd on hand, capacity on a perfect day for baseball.
- 56:25Now the whine.
- 56:27Here's the pitch strike over the outside corner.
- 56:35And that evens it up a ball and a strike.
- 56:39We're in the fourth across the river, across the bay, right over the bridge,
- 56:51about ten miles away.
- 56:54The Open A's will open up their season tonight against the Milwaukee Bruins.
- 57:00One-one tie, here's the bet.
- 57:04Breaking ball with a low.
- 57:06Ball three, don't want to watch anybody.
- 57:13Three balls and a strike.
- 57:16Young blood waiting.
- 57:18He's real fast.
- 57:21Five balls, center field should be caught, they're near waiting.
- 57:26And he has it.
- 57:27One draw.
- 57:29Young blood.
- 57:30He cracks as bad as he flies now.
- 57:34The whine, Rupin with a good fastball today, Gary.
- 57:39He's been in trouble with the breaking pitch, but he's been throwing up high.
- 57:44But he still has that good, thinking fastball.
- 57:48One man out.
- 57:55Jim Finch and Andy McKenna has a good foul back on the play.
- 58:02Jim Donald, Mrs. Donald, all from the Covens official family along with Dallas Green,
- 58:11sitting down behind the Covens Dunghounds, watching the game here.
- 58:15The French, strike off.
- 58:19All into the count of Jimmy Davis.
- 58:22He was out on strikes the first time up.
- 58:25Ball game in the fourth, tied up one and one.
- 58:29Now the delivery, here's the pitch on the way.
- 58:35Just missed with a fastball outside, he was trying to hit the corner.
- 58:41One and two to count.
- 58:45One away.
- 58:48Here is the pitch.
- 58:51Good foul, good turn ball.
- 58:56Jimmy Davis and Dennis caught out on strike, second time in a row.
- 59:02That'll bring up the catcher, Bob Renley.
- 59:05On the bottom of the fourth, one-one tie.
- 59:13Boy, how about the Boston Red Sox last night at California?
- 59:18They were only three games on opening day.
- 59:21The empty game at Kansas City was rained out.
- 59:23The Red Sox won their game at Baltimore.
- 59:27And Cincinnati beat the Mets.
- 59:30The Red Sox had the game one-one to nothing, two out on the bottom of the ninth and eight.
- 59:35When Bobby Boone hit a routine ground ball to the shortstop,
- 59:40his ground ball hit the short.
- 59:42Larry Bowen gobbles it up.
- 59:44Oh, the first to be out.
- 59:47One, two, three, that's the first perfect inning hit by Rufus.
- 59:52The other one, three and draw.
- 59:54The other ball.
- 59:56Tied up at once.
- 59:59Celebrate the grand opening of the spectacular Steele Outlet Store in Manson tomorrow,

- 1:00:50Harry Carrey back to campus, taking the golf top on his fifth of the city side,
- 1:00:54and thought about the Red Sox.
- 1:00:58As in Game 1, he had his foot in a defensive shot, such as Harris.
- 1:01:02A little too ground ball, which was the end of the Game 1,
- 1:01:06but I think the steal of the ball easily lobs the throw that a first base
- 1:01:10grew poorly, a bounce in front of the first base,
- 1:01:14but rolled away. And both the tying and winning Red Sox
- 1:01:18instead of the Red Sox winning one, they lost two to one.
- 1:01:22That's not something to see. You can start out as a...
- 1:01:26Here's Vanier to lead it off. He's 102 today, the first pitch is out,
- 1:01:30start ball one. Now the pitch, curveball low, ball two.
- 1:01:34That's what drive managers crazy into the ass for, yeah, but, Jar,
- 1:01:38great here. You think you're going to get a good shot, but you're not.
- 1:01:42You're going to make a smart move putting in your defense of base.
- 1:01:46That's developed.
- 1:01:50Now the pitch on the way, swung on, popped up.
- 1:01:54How fly should we call it? LeMans is there, Leonard's there,
- 1:01:58takes a lie, somebody holds onto the ball, and it looks like it's Leonard.
- 1:02:02They held onto the ball, all right.
- 1:02:06Leonard's got it.
- 1:02:10LeMans went out quite a ways for that ball.
- 1:02:14Leonard, thinking that he wasn't near the play, didn't even call for it.
- 1:02:18Therefore the collision in the cup both near.
- 1:02:22Look how far LeMans went back for that baseball.
- 1:02:26Now there's one out.
- 1:02:30Vanier was out front two balls, no strikes,
- 1:02:34tried to jerk one out and popped it up.
- 1:02:38He's one out of two, an infield hit,
- 1:02:42and a third inning. Now the delivery, here it is.
- 1:02:46He's starting up his genna bunt, fastball in,
- 1:02:50strike off. One more, Davis is getting covered.
- 1:02:54One out,
- 1:02:58here's the bet. Bouncing ball,
- 1:03:02deep shot, LeMans takes back in,
- 1:03:06young one tried to cut that ball off
- 1:03:10and missed. LeMans, the other, scooped it up behind him.
- 1:03:14With a perfect off balance throw,
- 1:03:18got Sam Berger first.
- 1:03:22LeMans, the first to have done it.
- 1:03:26Leedle that one to get the head.
- 1:03:30Johnny LeMans' parents, who are from Tainville, Kentucky to Washington.
- 1:03:34Two outs, nobody on, Gary Matthews, they hit it.
- 1:03:38Line drive off the third baseman's block, a base hit.
- 1:03:42Matthews, first hitter to cover.
- 1:03:46Gonna bring him around save.
- 1:03:50Boy, he really rightful one that diamond, Joel Youngblood.
- 1:03:54Leeds up, got his drum on the ball, and just pour its way right through.
- 1:03:58Here's save.
- 1:04:02They are very moved save because they well recall.
- 1:04:06Remembering from the games that he has beaten the Giants while a member of the Dodgers.
- 1:04:12They're a hated rival.
- 1:04:16And the silly beat the Yankees today.
- 1:04:20Now to stretch the bench.
- 1:04:24Wow, get up on the first pitch.
- 1:04:28Easy out, Danny Treo there.
- 1:04:32Hey, an easy top fly out.
- 1:04:36And it's no run, one hit.
- 1:04:40No air, one last to come to that consistent fire living.
- 1:04:44And also beneficiary to three bases on ball.
- 1:04:48But a score of only one run.
- 1:04:52And a tight up one-one.
- 1:04:56Two value hardware stores believe that garden tools should outlast garden plans.

- 1:05:24With Hall of Fame and little draw, Harry Jennery, Dodgers San Francisco.
- 1:05:34It's all tied up one-one.
- 1:05:36We go on to the bottom of the fifth.
- 1:05:38Leading it off, Airborne Davis the pitcher.
- 1:05:40He rolled out his first time at bat.
- 1:05:46The Cardinals have knocked out Valenzuela.
- 1:05:52The lead at Dodgers Stadium.
- 1:05:55Still batting in the fourth.
- 1:05:57The headboard of three.
- 1:06:00Here now is the pitch.
- 1:06:03Good fastball right in there.
- 1:06:05Strike off.
- 1:06:07One strike and nothing.
- 1:06:08Big group.
- 1:06:11That was a good lifetime average against the Giants.
- 1:06:14Here's the pitch.
- 1:06:15Slow curving, bun foul.
- 1:06:17Good idea.
- 1:06:18Yes, and he had his pitch too far.
- 1:06:20He's bouncing his slow curve ball.
- 1:06:22Got it.
- 1:06:23He's just started down the line too quickly.
- 1:06:26He's in the hole, hole and two.
- 1:06:30Now ready.
- 1:06:35Single jibbing.
- 1:06:42Here's the pitch.
- 1:06:44And he struck him out.
- 1:06:48It's nice to have that pitcher leading it off.
- 1:06:52One third of the inning is over already.
- 1:06:54That's right.
- 1:06:55The third strikeout for Luther.
- 1:07:02Here's Johnny Lamas.
- 1:07:04He's scored the only run.
- 1:07:10He's single a right on a three-two-pitch,
- 1:07:12so second.
- 1:07:14A damster fair with Johnny Lamas who still went to center field
- 1:07:18and scored on Manny Treo's single a right.
- 1:07:22That was in the first inning.
- 1:07:23Here's the fastball in there.
- 1:07:25Strike off.
- 1:07:26One out, nobody on.
- 1:07:27Fifth inning.
- 1:07:29Tied up one-one on him.
- 1:07:30The ball game, the fifth.
- 1:07:32Just slidin' right under the fieldie.
- 1:07:35Manny's at end of them now.
- 1:07:38Oh and two.

- 1:08:10And Marino Nibby has a restaurant here in San Francisco called
- 1:08:15Laudia Caja.
- 1:08:19Here's the pitch.
- 1:08:21He's stuck him out swinging.
- 1:08:23Strike out number four.
- 1:08:24Great curve ball.
- 1:08:25Died out and somewhat dropped the arm and went away from it.
- 1:08:28What a master.
- 1:08:29Inexpected.
- 1:08:32That is seven of them are all retired by Ruthven.
- 1:08:44Manny Trito's rolled in the early run.
- 1:08:48By then battered.
- 1:08:50One-one tie that cuts about him in six to four.
- 1:08:55And the bottom of the fifth.
- 1:08:57The delivery.
- 1:08:58By, boy, he is popping that ball in there Ruth.
- 1:09:02He has repeated a great fast ball.
- 1:09:04And the better knows what to do with it.
- 1:09:06He can continue to have great control as he's had here for the first four and two-thirds innings.
- 1:09:12There's another one a good splat over the outside corner.
- 1:09:17Every hit of this inning, all three so far, he's been 0-2 ahead of them.
- 1:09:24Now the one for delivery, here it is.
- 1:09:28Just missed with a shot breaking slider.
- 1:09:34Going through the count, a one and two rather now.
- 1:09:40Here's the pitch.
- 1:09:43There's the long drive.
- 1:09:45He's left him twisting foul ball.
- 1:09:49Manny Trito is going for the long one.

- 1:10:31He's struck out the side.
- 1:10:33Now taking a roll.
- 1:10:35Four of them on strikeout.

- 1:11:42There's a drive.
- 1:11:44Deep left field, way back.
- 1:11:46It might be out of here.
- 1:11:47Whoa!
- 1:11:48Come on in!
- 1:11:49Wahoo!
- 1:11:51Holy cow!
- 1:11:53Morland has given the count of the lead.
- 1:11:56Third time this day he hits a ball on the button.
- 1:12:00That was great.
- 1:12:02Morland's very happy, clapping his hands as he rounded second base.
- 1:12:06Then he came in, and he's hit a big lead with the way Rooster looks right now.
- 1:12:12Well, he's saying to high-five with Joey Davis.
- 1:12:16And listen to teammates now.
- 1:12:19More than a happy young man.
- 1:12:23Two to one and paint of the cup.
- 1:12:25A long high towering Home Run drive over the left field wall.
- 1:12:31Here's a pitch to Ohio.
- 1:12:32He makes sure that Jeff Leonard wouldn't catch this one.
- 1:12:38One ball, no strike.
- 1:12:39Joey Davis, one on a two today.
- 1:12:42Now to delivery.
- 1:12:43Here it is.
- 1:12:44Long and he missed.
- 1:12:48And the count evens up with a ball on a strike.
- 1:12:52Morland a long Home Run to give the Cubs a two-to-one lead.
- 1:12:59Joey Davis, the left-hander ready.
- 1:13:06Now the pitch on the way here then.
- 1:13:09High, top ball back, not a player.
- 1:13:12Off day tomorrow or that Thursday will be our first night game of the year here.
- 1:13:19Remember, there's a two-hour difference in time,
- 1:13:23two hours later in Chicago than it is here.
- 1:13:28Now the pitch here then.
- 1:13:31Long drive, deep right center field, way back in Jimmy Clark though.
- 1:13:35Jack Clark is there under the ball and he makes the catch.
- 1:13:39Joey Davis, flying deep for Clark.
- 1:13:44But out is Leon Dunham.
- 1:13:48Rolled into a double play in the second.
- 1:13:51Walked with two out and scored when Larry Bowen doubled in the fourth.
- 1:14:01Now ready.
- 1:14:05Now to delivery.
- 1:14:06Here it is.
- 1:14:09Long drive into left field.
- 1:14:11He's got a second swing and he looks to swing him enough.
- 1:14:14And Dunham has his first of the season.
- 1:14:19Now the Cubs now have a total of eight.
- 1:14:25Here's Larry Bowen with a run of his first one out through one Cub,
- 1:14:31we're in the sixth.
- 1:14:38You may see a little maneuvering on the base half here.
- 1:14:43Here's why Davis ready to delivery.
- 1:14:47And a third ball in a beautiful strike call and Bowen stepping out of the box.
- 1:14:51Looks to Don Zimmer coaching third.
- 1:14:54John Bukovic the first.
- 1:14:56Luke's brother and father are here to see the game.
- 1:15:02Now the best.
- 1:15:04Line's fast left in, another hit from Bowen, his third straight.
- 1:15:07What a way to start the season.
- 1:15:10Three out of three.
- 1:15:16And the crowd gets a little rush.
- 1:15:18We're just getting roots going out.
- 1:15:22Would you bum with him here, bro, or would you not hit away?
- 1:15:25Oh, I'd bum with him.
- 1:15:26Move him along.
- 1:15:28See if we can pick up another runner, too.
- 1:15:32A little huddle around the mound, the first base for Joe Youngblood,
- 1:15:37along with the catcher Bob Wrenley and the pitcher Mark Davis.
- 1:15:43And the right hander's working on the both ends of the jam.
- 1:15:48Young's taking the lead.
- 1:15:50Now Don Zimmer wants to talk.
- 1:15:54Leon Dump, who's the runner at second base, Bowen's the first base.
- 1:16:01The wheels are spinning.
- 1:16:03Here's Bukovic coming down the line out of the left field corner.
- 1:16:07He'll be available if they bring in the right hander.
- 1:16:14Now that he's on the fence, he's on 21 foul, strike one.
- 1:16:23Boy, the Cubs going into the foul game with the lineup they have on the field.
- 1:16:28Look at these left-hand hitters who are available.
- 1:16:31That's Pinchotter, Jay Johnstone, Richie Hentner, Mel Hall, and Phil Buckeye.
- 1:16:38All outstanding hitters.
- 1:16:42Now ready.
- 1:16:44It's the roofing.
- 1:16:46He's going to bounce on foul strike two.
- 1:16:52That's Frank Williams, the youngster warming up for the jam.
- 1:16:57The right-hander.
- 1:17:02Bob Deniro on deck.
- 1:17:09Now ready.
- 1:17:11Roofing in the hole.
- 1:17:14It's a known hit.
- 1:17:17He's not exactly helpless up there.
- 1:17:20Now the delivery here.
- 1:17:22One of the jams he does is a beauty and will advise everybody to throw the first in time of sacrifice.
- 1:17:35Here's Deniro foul with runners of second and third.
- 1:17:42He's got a strong right-hander on the bench.
- 1:17:54A very strong left-hander.
- 1:18:07Here's Deniro. He's one out of three. What a good hitman through here.
- 1:18:12Pass ball, straight ball.
- 1:18:16Deniro started the ballgame with a single or seven.
- 1:18:20One out of three.
- 1:18:24Now Mark Davis is running through the one and favor the cubs.
- 1:18:27Durham down the line.
- 1:18:29Trying to bother him.
- 1:18:32Time call by the plate on fire. Harry Wendell Steph.
- 1:18:37The young ball and sheet.
- 1:18:40The national leader is here.
- 1:18:44Now ready to delivery.
- 1:18:47Third ball low. The count evens. The ball on the strike.
- 1:18:51Ryan Sandberg on deck.
- 1:18:55A home run by Keith Malden is given a comfortable lead here in the sixth.
- 1:19:04Now to wind up the pitch here it is.
- 1:19:07A high, top foul coming back into the stands. Out of play.
- 1:19:12He's still alive but he's behind on the count one and two.
- 1:19:17Deniro's just trying to make contact.
- 1:19:22Wendell's going out now and warning the young Skip Davis that he's going to keep an eye on Durham.
- 1:19:32I don't believe that he would have kept a steal of home with these strikes on the right hand and hitters.
- 1:19:37No, think of your own life in your own hands.
- 1:19:40But if the kid gets through, Carol, and throws one into the dirt, we may have the third wild pitch in this game.
- 1:19:49Davis survives all superstitions. He wears the number 13 on his uniform.
- 1:19:55Here's a wind up the pitch. There he is.
- 1:19:58Please! And he fires it back. He's got a good shot.
- 1:20:02Davis is throwing him a lot of fastballs. He may throw one too many.
- 1:20:09One and two to count. Right hand in the waiting. Durham down the line.
- 1:20:15He's trying to entice him into a box. Here's the pitch.
- 1:20:20Set!
- 1:20:23There goes one.
- 1:20:27One run.
- 1:20:29Three hits.
- 1:20:31No air.
- 1:20:33Two left.
- 1:20:36Comes a stranded eight.
- 1:20:38We move him to the bottom of the six, two to one and save him from Chicago.
- 1:20:44It's now time for John Plumb in the traffic hopper for a traffic update.
- 1:20:48Mary, the Kennedy is at a crawl from the Ryan-Often-Agle. It's 42 minutes travel time from the Eisenhower to Junction.
- 1:20:5562 out to O'Hare. Eisenhower construction crawl, Ryan to Austin.
- 1:20:5945 minutes from the Eisenhower to Stevenson. 32 minutes out to Harlem. Slow Ryan to Central.
- 1:21:06Now back to the ballgame.
- 1:21:16Harry, Harry and Lou Goodwill are as we go into the bottom half of the sixth inning.
- 1:21:21The St. Louis Tigers, Florida with five, have gone to the stadium knocking out Fernando Valabuella.
- 1:21:28Now St. Louis, Covent, Los Angeles three, that game at the bottom of the fourth inning.
- 1:21:34La Pointe, on the mound, with St. Louis and it's passed as the lead win.
- 1:21:41Here's Jack Clark to lead it off. First pitch a slider in and a strike call.
- 1:21:47Rooksman is retired. The last eight in a row for them on strikeout.
- 1:21:53Now the Y is the pick. A breaking ball low to even account them on on the strike.
- 1:21:58Jack Clark is one out of two to slugging like realers.
- 1:22:05Now Rooksman's fifth. Here it is. One bag, one hopper. The Stamburgs have got it on the grass.
- 1:22:12Throw them the first of the up. One away.
- 1:22:16Stamburgs being smart, playing on the, coming into the grass.
- 1:22:21You're going to take any chances with that soft infield. One away.
- 1:22:27Here's Al Oliver. Good bye, pitch ball, and foul out so far.
- 1:22:34Making his debut in the Giant Uniform.
- 1:22:39Now to wind up the glimmer. There's the five ball centerfield in there going back, back, back, back.
- 1:22:46All the way to the wall. Oliver Loughn is second base, holding up with a double.
- 1:22:51Did you hear him misplay that ball, Harry? He thought the ball was hit far out of line rather than being hit as powerful as Oliver can hit him.
- 1:23:01Oliver's a strong man.
- 1:23:05The ball got over Garnier's head. Man, he really creamed that ball. Yes, he did.
- 1:23:14When it was in, I thought maybe Garnier would catch it, but it just put off on him.
- 1:23:22Now the time running, it's going for the, here's Jeff Leonard. He's 0 for 2.
- 1:23:36Leonard lined out of line to Gary Matthews his first time up.
- 1:23:42That double by Al Oliver has brought the crowd to life.
- 1:23:47Now protecting the one on lead. Here's the pitch.
- 1:23:51He held up in time, a breaking ball, the one away.
- 1:23:55One ball, no strikes. The Giant's fifth hit of the day, the seven to that nine.
- 1:24:05The third strike. Go pitch. High, five ball, left field. Gary Matthews has room.
- 1:24:15Makes the cut. Leonard's wide to Matthews.
- 1:24:21Here's Joe Young-Watt now. The old nemesis. Young-Watt who murders the double.
- 1:24:33Jody Davis goes out to talk to Dick Rupa.
- 1:24:43Gary LeBella left-hander started a warm-up for the Giant.
- 1:24:50New mother out. Young-Watt 0 for 2 today.
- 1:24:58Now ready. The pitch. Curveball and in their ability.
- 1:25:05Rupa would have to reach back now, give it all he has against this hitter who has been very tough against the Cubs.
- 1:25:14Now the stretch, the delivery. The pitch swung and he missed the bees ahead of him.
- 1:25:210-2. Young-Watt is hit 315 during his career against the Cubs.
- 1:25:32He's hit four homers against them.
- 1:25:36Now he's in the hole, 0-2. Don't make a mistake here.
- 1:25:42Down the side. Here's the pitch.
- 1:25:58That's a tough pitch. Rupa and the veterans should know better than that.
- 1:26:03That's if you give him anything that he can play at, it would have to be put in the count. You have to set up a pitch when he gets so out front 2-0 that a timing run is going to be sufficient.
- 1:26:15That is the second time today it's happened.
- 1:26:19Now hit on the pitch, 0-2. And he lays the ball right in there. Young-Watt drilled it into left field on the 0-2 pitch.
- 1:26:33Oh boy. He'd have bounced the ball up there.
- 1:26:40He might swing at it and study later right down the middle of the plate.
- 1:26:45Here now is Jilly Davis, and it's a little bit outside. All tied up 2-2.
- 1:27:00The outfield straight away indeed.
- 1:27:06We're over to 1st to run it back. Boy, Rupa has been pitching so magnificently.
- 1:27:15He got out in front of Young-Watt, 0-2.
- 1:27:20Probably there's nothing wrong with the pitch itself. He just got away. He didn't want to throw it.
- 1:27:25There's the pass.
- 1:27:28Here's the run around second leg to the fairway.
- 1:27:31Here's Rupa's got a chance. And he is taking it. Oh, he dropped the ball.
- 1:27:36He dropped the ball and then a hammer.
- 1:27:41The throw is to the left field side of the bag.
- 1:27:46On air and on stage.
- 1:28:01There comes Jim Friar. Boy, invariably that'll happen.
- 1:28:08You got a lot of guy who got on the cusp, get away, and everything begins to develop.
- 1:28:15He's going to be out of the inning leading 2-1.
- 1:28:18He's now tied 2-2, and they have runners at 1st and 3rd with 2-0.
- 1:28:23This is Friar's move by Jim, in my opinion. He knew that Rupa made a mistake.
- 1:28:29Rupa knows he made a mistake. And then the baseman follows. He wants to settle him down.
- 1:28:35Talk to him. Talk to his coach. If he still has it, he'll leave him in there.
- 1:28:39If he feels that he's losing it, then he'll bring in Stoddard.
- 1:28:44Stoddard is in the bullpen right now, throwing hard.
- 1:28:49Friendly, they got the bell ready.
- 1:28:55The Giants know they'll pinch hit.
- 1:28:59Boy, the pinch of Mark Davis.
- 1:29:02They have tied it up with 2-0 out here.
- 1:29:07Here's Friendly who doubles in the 2nd, bounced down in the 4th.
- 1:29:13Right hand hitter.
- 1:29:16Now, we're not friendly.
- 1:29:17We'll see if Roddy gives Friendly two strikes before he wants the cups to throw the ball in the air with use of double steal.
- 1:29:25There's a pinch and it's a breaking ball in the first strike call.
- 1:29:28You may only allow him one strike. We don't know.
- 1:29:3230-year-old receiver up there.
- 1:29:34Hit 2-24, last year with 7 homers.
- 1:29:39Game tied 2-2.
- 1:29:43Now the delivery, here it is.
- 1:29:46Curveball, low to low.
- 1:29:52But Doddery, that's where he wanted to make that pitch to Youngblood, but got it up high instead.
- 1:30:01Now ready.
- 1:30:03Runners are first and third.
- 1:30:08Fencing ball to Larry Buller throws the second, fourth player to repire the shot.
- 1:30:14One run.
- 1:30:17Three hits.
- 1:30:20No errors, I guess.
- 1:30:22Yes, but did they get an error?
- 1:30:24Apparently not. There's only one error up on the board.
- 1:30:26Okay.
- 1:30:27I thought they announced it. Say it. They give it an error for dropping the throw.
- 1:30:30At any rate, two men are left on base.
- 1:30:36Milo Hamilton will be rejoining the room in a moment.
- 1:30:39This is Harry Carrey at Candlestick Park.
- 1:30:42We're at the end of sixth in an exciting ball game.
- 1:30:45We're all tied up at 2. We're back here.
- 1:30:53The Giants got a run in the first. Cubs tied it in the fourth.
- 1:30:57Moreland's homers have fixed it in the Cubs to brief lead.
- 1:31:00The Giants quickly answer to tie it.
- 1:31:02So we're 2 to 2. The Cubs have out hit the Giants 9 to 7.
- 1:31:07One error, throwing error to Jody Davis.
- 1:31:09First inning gave the Giants a chance to get on the board.
- 1:31:12A strike ball to Gary Matthews.
- 1:31:16Mark Davis was wielding a little bit in that sixth inning, but now in the seventh, he's throwing good again, Lou.
- 1:31:22High fastball, he muscled up in its sails with good velocity.
- 1:31:26I'd say maybe he's back up around that 88 to 90 now.
- 1:31:29And he's using that fastball more now because he's loosened up. He's relaxed a little bit more.
- 1:31:35Here's the 1-1. Down low the ball to Gary Matthews.
- 1:31:39I thought Janier's throw to third has retired the runner and saved an able to throw out of the box.
- 1:31:46That's what I thought and I said that Charlie Williams, the umpire, really waited.
- 1:31:51He waited to save because he was ready to call him out and then when he saw the ball trickle out,
- 1:31:56there's the ball to make it 3-1 to the charge.
- 1:31:59Gary Matthews will be going after this one if he likes.
- 1:32:04Trying to break us out of the tie.
- 1:32:07The pitch, did he go? No, he didn't.
- 1:32:12He has walked for the second time today. Gary Matthews on.
- 1:32:17That is the fourth walk given up by young Mark Davis.
- 1:32:2123-year-old Leslie is young one coming in to chat with him.
- 1:32:25Here's Rod Say, walked intentionally in the first,
- 1:32:29popped up to Oliver in the third,
- 1:32:31popped up to Manny Trito in the fifth,
- 1:32:33to the Penguin looking for his first hit today.
- 1:32:36And that's going to put their bullpen to work again and it will be the left-hander Gary LaValle,
- 1:32:40who threw briefly, won the Giants from batting in the bottom of the sixth.
- 1:32:44And Milo, fourth place hitter or not,
- 1:32:47when the man is not swinging as he has been doing against Stevens,
- 1:32:51a hit run is possible.
- 1:32:53That's been swinging and he pops it up again.
- 1:32:56This time off behind second Manny Trito called, Manny Trito there.
- 1:33:02That is two away.
- 1:33:03Third time in a row that he's popped up.
- 1:33:05Yes, they didn't give Fry a chance.
- 1:33:07If he would put it on the first,
- 1:33:09they're going to go for say the first pitch and then perhaps put on a hit run,
- 1:33:14make him keep his eye on the ball, which he is not doing today.
- 1:33:18Now to bring up Morland, who's hit the ball hard every time up today and finally jacked one out of here in the sixth inning.
- 1:33:28We'll be getting in a break for you just as soon as we have time.
- 1:33:32You have anything later on the Dodgers and Cardinals?
- 1:33:36Looks like the Cardinals are doing a number on you.
- 1:33:39They knocked him out of the box, going five into fourth inning.
- 1:33:43There's a swing for the Morland.
- 1:33:45And Rice for a feet as St. Louis 7, Los Angeles 3.
- 1:33:51Los Angeles was batting in the fifth inning and according to the scoreboards,
- 1:33:55they have scored one run and are still batting.
- 1:33:58All right, seven to four.
- 1:34:01That is right called to Morland.
- 1:34:03Got it over the outside corner.
- 1:34:09Gary Matthews at first base, two away.
- 1:34:12Morland batting, throw over to first.
- 1:34:14Not close.
- 1:34:15Matthews is only a step away.
- 1:34:19Custer batting in the seventh, opening game 1984 on the road.
- 1:34:23We open at home on Friday the 13th.
- 1:34:26Open with the New York Mets.
- 1:34:30No ball, two strikes.
- 1:34:33Line drive hit into left center.
- 1:34:35Davis would come over to keep it from going through the gap.
- 1:34:38And with the play in front of him, Matthews took a turn.
- 1:34:41Gilly Davis bobbled the ball ever so briefly, but then when he regrouped,
- 1:34:45Matthews stayed right where he was.
- 1:34:47So you've got runners at first and second with two away and Jody Davis the batter.
- 1:34:52And we've had at least one hit in every inning for seventh inning.
- 1:34:58Let's see if we can add to it right here by Jody.
- 1:35:00Total of ten hits.
- 1:35:01Let's get that break in here.
- 1:35:02Milo Hamilton and Lou Boudreau with Cubs radio on the road on the WCN,
- 1:35:07Chicago Cubs baseball network.
- 1:35:09Wake up with the Wally Phillips show each weekday morning at 530 right here on WGN Radio, Chicago.
- 1:35:21Jody Davis the batter.
- 1:35:22Jody is one for three today and a base hit in the second inning.
- 1:35:26Breaking ball stayed outside, one and oh.
- 1:35:29One of those stations just coming in for that last break.
- 1:35:32WNNO, Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin.
- 1:35:36Great to have the folks at WNNO with us on the Cubs network in 84.
- 1:35:43Jody looks at the strike, came over the top.
- 1:35:45There was that flair.
- 1:35:46That was the flair.
- 1:35:49Now that looks more like a curve than a slider to me.
- 1:35:52He uses that pitch in the jam with mid-ass heat.
- 1:35:56One ball, one strike.
- 1:35:57Matthews second, Morland at first with his second straight hit.
- 1:36:03Drive out in the right center slicing, Jody Davis running.
- 1:36:06He'll get it.
- 1:36:07He'll be up against the bench.
- 1:36:09Matthews will score.
- 1:36:10Three to two.
- 1:36:12And as Morland crosses, it is four to two, a two run double by Jody Davis.
- 1:36:19He came back with the same pitch but it didn't break as much as the prior pitch when you called it like a color ball.
- 1:36:25This one hung up outside for Jody and he went to the right center beautifully with it.
- 1:36:30I like it when Jody doesn't try to jerk everything to left and left center.
- 1:36:35I've seen signs of him in the last ten days being a more patient and dedicated man to going with the pitch away.
- 1:36:43He's disciplined himself by not trying to pull the ball at every time at bat.
- 1:36:48Now I hope that it continues once we get at home in Wrigley Field.
- 1:36:53Very good point.
- 1:36:56This is Durham.
- 1:36:58A fast ball if the letter is too tight.
- 1:37:01One ball, no strike.
- 1:37:03Remember after our game we'll have the scoreboard.
- 1:37:05Then in Chicago, Uncle Bobby Collins will slip in and it will be sports central.
- 1:37:10And here's the one oh, whoa, what a rip.
- 1:37:13Oh, oh.
- 1:37:14Bo might have screwed himself into the ground like a corkscrew but he didn't connect.
- 1:37:19And the count is even at a ball and a strike.
- 1:37:21Durham has hit into a double play, walked and scored on a bow and double.
- 1:37:26And last time up had a face hit.
- 1:37:28Both Judd handled fly ball a blooper into left.
- 1:37:31That makes up for the ball that he hit like a scream and maybe in the second it was a double play ball.
- 1:37:38That's a strike over the outside corner.
- 1:37:40They say they even out, do they?
- 1:37:43Not in my career.
- 1:37:48One ball and two strikes.
- 1:37:50Cubs are leading by two, biggest lead they've had.
- 1:37:54They're drilled by one, led by a run, got tied again, leading four to two here.
- 1:37:59Hit him on the fifth, can't they?
- 1:38:01Ops is at the second trio, fires the first and the side has been reset.
- 1:38:06Let me add one comment here with Robinson going just too far with his young left hander,
- 1:38:13at least two hitters I would say, is changing because he had LaVelle in the bullpen
- 1:38:18because David leads off the inning.
- 1:38:21So he wants to try to keep him in there to put in a pitcher.
- 1:38:24Very good from the good kid.
- 1:38:26And two runs on two hits, big two run double by Jody Davis.
- 1:38:29The Giants fans are up for their first seventh inning stretch.
- 1:38:32The Cubs are leading four to two.
- 1:38:35Pringus of Wheaton saved $97.
- 1:38:37Doug Timberlake of Palatine saved $91.
- 1:38:41People in every Chicago suburb are saving money each month by taking the RTA instead of their car.
- 1:38:48They're using the new RTA link-up ticket that includes suburban and Chicago shuttle bus service
- 1:38:54for convenience that's practically door-to-door.
- 1:38:57Tickets are on sale now at downtown and many suburban stations.
- 1:39:01So, link up with the RTA and save.
- 1:39:04Lanellan saved $74.
- 1:39:06The Giants settling down now after their seventh inning stretch.
- 1:39:12And I'll tell you one thing, they're trying the psychological seventh inning stretch
- 1:39:16because they reintroduced Dusty Baker.
- 1:39:19He had another standing O. This crowd went crazy.
- 1:39:22Yes, indeed. Just think what they would have done if they would have had the two run leaders.
- 1:39:28They'd have knocked down a few quicks from Candle Stick Park.
- 1:39:34Davis being lifted and Kiper is the pitcher.
- 1:39:46Kiper will be batting for Davis.
- 1:39:51Lane Kiper from Rosseen, Wisconsin.
- 1:39:56Played with Cleveland for a number of years. It's his third year as a Giants.
- 1:40:01Batting left-handed against Ruthven. Low inside, ball one.
- 1:40:06Now, Fry has to watch Ruthven very closely. He's had great stuff up here.
- 1:40:12He's got into trouble in the sixth. He has a two-run lead to work on.
- 1:40:18Four to two counts. One-oh pitch.
- 1:40:21That's strike a good fastball. That is one-and-one. Ruthven has had a good fastball.
- 1:40:26Yes, he has. A good fastball all during this ballgame. Hope he can hold it.
- 1:40:33Ruthven reads the sign from Jody Davis, his battery mate who got him in front again with a two-run double.
- 1:40:39A little under the letter is too tight and it's two balls and one strike.
- 1:40:44Remember back in Chicago, Saturday night, the big Ray Meyers salute at the high-end regency.
- 1:40:51Here's the two-one. Swinging and a bouncer, deep short. Boa got it set up in a hurry by Ruthven.
- 1:40:58Got him. Good play by Larry Boa.
- 1:41:00Good play by Larry and a good stretch by Jerome.
- 1:41:04Good play on both ends. That keeps that leadoff batter from getting on and you saw Boa again having trouble with that soft jerk.
- 1:41:13He goes back and moves it out after every play that he has to make at shortstop.
- 1:41:19The master of the batter, speaking of that Ray Meyers salute, Ray will be throwing out the opening pitch, opening day at Wrigley Field on the 13th.
- 1:41:27I think Marge ought to help him a little bit on that.
- 1:41:30Oh, she'll be there. There's a strike to the master who is one for three in scroter run.
- 1:41:36And Mary High from Ed Mineta's office at the ball tells us the tickets are still available for the day.
- 1:41:42You can call Herb Newman and his gang at 321-7643. Swing and a miss. Boa is Ruthven quick in this effort.
- 1:41:51Yes, indeed. Those two runs look beautiful up there. For everybody that's rooting for the cut.
- 1:41:58Cuts him out. Hits the chance 11 to 7, leading the score 4 to 2.
- 1:42:03Tried to golf one. He needed a two iron for that one. That was right on his shoe laces.
- 1:42:12Bowled it off to the left. No balls, two strikes. Johnny LeMaster.
- 1:42:19They have seven hits but nobody has more than one.
- 1:42:25Morland has two, Davis two, and Boa three for the cut. Try called. Dropped down on him a little with a good breaking pitch. Gave him a different look.
- 1:42:34Yes, indeed. Gave him a tight-arm curve ball. And the master wasn't expecting it.
- 1:42:39This is what happens when a hitter gets set up and looks in a certain area for the release of that baseball.
- 1:42:46So pitchers should drop down now and then, especially with two strikes on the net, if they don't pick it up.
- 1:42:52Six strikeouts for Rufus. Here is Manny Trio, drove in a run with a right field single in the first.
- 1:42:59In the third hit a hard shot back to the mound and Rufus knocked down and threw him out, then struck out swinging last time up.
- 1:43:06Swinging in a miss here. So if you're interested in that big Raymier salute dinner at the Hyatt Regency Saturday, call 321-7643.
- 1:43:16We'd love to have you join us.
- 1:43:18Yes, sir. If ever a dinner should be sold out standing alone, it should be for him.
- 1:43:23Well, I'm looking forward to flying back for that one.
- 1:43:26Yes, indeed. I wish I was going back with you for Ray's sake.
- 1:43:29Quite an honor to be asked to. The MC is having along with Billy Packer, and it'll be a big night in Chicago.
- 1:43:37They know what class he is, but, kids, you got it. Along with Meyer.
- 1:43:42And as an off-speed pitch, Trio looked at it for a ball and it's 2-1. Jack Clark, 2-up next.
- 1:43:50Their RBIs have come from Trio in the first and Youngblood in the sixth.
- 1:43:55The Cub RBIs have come from Boa, Morlin, and 2-by Jody Davis.
- 1:44:01They're next. Swing! And they miss.
- 1:44:04Perfect spot, right? He's only made one mistake thus far in his ball game, and that was to Youngblood.
- 1:44:11Well, I thought when he didn't throw a fastball and hung a breaking ball at a master, the first inning was a little bit too.
- 1:44:17Well, you're right, but the count was against him.
- 1:44:19There's a line right in the left center. It'll drop and roll. It'll take off to the fence. That'll be an extra base for Manny Trio.
- 1:44:25Matthews fires it into the shortstop, the one out into the outfield, where he has to get it.
- 1:44:30And it's a two-out double for Manny Trio, his second hit of the game.
- 1:44:37Well, we're not worried about Trio right now. We have to be worried about Clark.
- 1:44:43And this is where Ruebfurt, the defenseman, knows that the tying run is at the plate.
- 1:44:48He wants to keep Clark from hitting the long ball.
- 1:44:52Clark has won for three at a base hit in the third inning.
- 1:44:55Around that single, he's popped to first and he's bounced to second.
- 1:44:59And now a different man gets up in the cup fullback because we're in the seventh inning and this time it's Big Lee Smith.
- 1:45:11Jack Clark to batter, Trio at second, two away, tying run at the plate.
- 1:45:17Good fastball. He just regs. He really bounced something extra.
- 1:45:21He gave everything he had on that pitch and he has to on every pitch right here. This is the ball game.
- 1:45:29No balls, one strike, pitch on the way. Swing! Got a miss and the bottom dropped out.
- 1:45:35Oh and two. Clark was trying to tie this game. I see Bill Buckner now going down toward the bullpen.
- 1:45:45That's the defensive move coming up. And this is where it comes into what Jimmy Fry talked about to us over the weekend
- 1:45:54and we talked about on the roundtable. Good kids. He had everybody happy.
- 1:45:58Swinging, fly ball, no carry, left field, Gary Matthews there, the inning is over.
- 1:46:04He really hits Clark beautifully that time. That shows what the veteran knows what to do in a given situation.
- 1:46:13No runs, one hit, Trio who doubled was left. We played seven innings and so far so good in the opener on the road.
- 1:46:21The Cubs lead the Giants 4-2.
- 1:46:51The new pitcher came out, Gary LaValle, and he asked Harry Wendelstam to have the ground crew come out.
- 1:47:12Looks as though maybe they're having some trouble around the rubber, huh?
- 1:47:15Yes, might have been loosened up a little bit. Well if that dirt on the mound is as soft as it is on the infield,
- 1:47:24it's a wonder it can hold the rubber in place. There's no doubt about that.
- 1:47:28I don't like to belabor the point, but we're not making it up or talking about it out of context.
- 1:47:34We came in here Sunday night and the papers were full of it because the players from both Oakland and the Giants
- 1:47:41who played a Bay City weekend series, both were beeping about it. So it's not our imagination or something the Cubs are using as an excuse.
- 1:47:50It's a fact here. Oh yeah, absolutely. Both clubs will admit to that.
- 1:47:56They had a role that's not only yesterday or early in the morning, but this morning trying to settle that infield out,
- 1:48:04and yet it still is in the same coldy condition. Gary LeVell, who will be the new pitcher, Davis worked seven innings,
- 1:48:13four runs, 11 hits, walked four, struck out three, served up a gopher ball to Moreland.
- 1:48:20Now Gary LeVell starting his tenth year in the big leagues, 6'1", 200. All of his career with the Giants.
- 1:48:31He got a sinking fastball, a slider, and last year he started fooling around with a kind of a combination forkball split finger.
- 1:48:42Yes, though he liked it, stayed with it this spring, and will continue to throw it. We'll probably see him throw it here.
- 1:48:48And it's made him a much more improved pitcher, that he doesn't have just the two pitches, the curveball and fastball.
- 1:48:56Smith continues to throw Fido in the Cubs bullpen, so Fry wants him to be ready on quick notice if something happens in the bottom of the eighth inning.
- 1:49:07And it's also, since we can't see you into our dugout, he may have already made up his mind, because Ruthman is due up a second in the inning,
- 1:49:15and we might get a tip on that when the on-deck hitter finally does come out, and he has not come out yet.
- 1:49:21I think you're absolutely correct, because this is the farthest Ruthman has gone, even in spring training.
- 1:49:28And of course, when you think of the sixth inning, that might have taken a little toll on him, because that was a rough inning.
- 1:49:38Number one.
- 1:49:39All right, Larry Bola, three for three, and he'll be batting right-handed again. Larry says, bring on those lefties.
- 1:49:47And how? What a great start, this little short stop there.
- 1:49:52Oh, he was fired up yesterday in the workout. He was on the batting practice pitchers. He said, throw me something I can hit.
- 1:50:01This is Bola swinging, sends a fly ball to right. Clark is there. Clark makes the catch. That's a difficult outfield at this time of day.
- 1:50:10Yes, it's like Winkley Field. Not as bad as Winkley Field to play with that son, but it can be tough.
- 1:50:17Ruthman will come out and bat for himself.
- 1:50:22We've got a great cup fan who came to Mesa, Arizona last weekend and got out of town before we could acknowledge him.
- 1:50:29Michael Mott from Highland Park and his nine-year-old son, Jeremy Mott.
- 1:50:34I know they're listening to the game today. Big cup fans.
- 1:50:40Swing and a miss by Ruthman.
- 1:50:46Cubs radio from San Francisco.
- 1:50:50Gary LaVelle in relief of Davis. Outside to Ruthman. One ball, one strike.
- 1:51:00Gary LaVelle, veteran reliever, delivering and a little outside of all.
- 1:51:07Gary LaVelle, active member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. He's quite a young man.
- 1:51:15Here's the pitch. Swing and a high pop. Over to the right side. Oliver coming over.
- 1:51:21Oliver is there and makes the play. Wrenley has gone up the line, but in that kind of a situation,
- 1:51:28you'd rather have the infielder take it, whether it's on the first base or third base,
- 1:51:32because they've got a different kind of glove, first of all, they usually have a better look at.
- 1:51:36And plus the fact that he has glasses, dark glasses, and he's facing the sun.
- 1:51:42And the infielder is on that right side. Trio end Oliver plus the right fielder with glasses.
- 1:51:49Number one. Keener being there for Obdermare.
- 1:51:53Obdermare one for four. He got a base hit in the first inning. He hit the very first pitch of the game,
- 1:52:01a rifle shot right back by Mark Davis's ear. Here is the pitch. That is a ball.
- 1:52:10A little upstairs with his fastball.
- 1:52:13Keener was caught stealing in that inning when Wrenley gambled and called for two straight pitch outs
- 1:52:18with a 2-1 count. A ball low inside. At that time, it was a big play. It still might be,
- 1:52:25but it was certainly something that was unexpected. You just don't go three and one, do you?
- 1:52:31No. I thought that kept the Giants from giving the Cubs the lead in that inning,
- 1:52:39and then they took the lead scoring in the bottom of the first inning.
- 1:52:432-1 pitch high outside of Bull. And it's three and one to Bob Dernier. Ryan Sandberg would be next.
- 1:52:49Nobody on two away. LaVelle working in the eighth inning. The Cubs are in front four to two.
- 1:52:55As you're starting to get into the drive time back home and you're picking us up on Cub Radio,
- 1:53:01great to have you with us and start another season. High outside. He walked him.
- 1:53:07So LaVelle, after getting Bull and Ruthven, loses to Dernier on a pass, and that is the fifth
- 1:53:16chop to walk in this game, and it brings up Ryan Sandberg. Sandberg had a base hit in the third.
- 1:53:22It was a leg hit. Then in the fifth inning, LaMaster, who went to school on the hit before,
- 1:53:28boy, he let go of that ball in a hurry and got him the next time.
- 1:53:31He had a very fine play.
- 1:53:34Then in the seventh inning, Sandberg struck out, so he's one for Bull. So to first, Dernier dives back.
- 1:53:40I'll tell you one thing about Dernier. Anytime he gets on, you have a feeling that he might go.
- 1:53:46Absolutely.
- 1:53:49To look to first, he has a big lead. LaVelle's this. One on line drive, left field, and they,
- 1:53:55left field, he reaches up and grabs it. That ball was hit hard.
- 1:54:01Sandberg hit the ball right on the button, but it just didn't get any uplift to it.
- 1:54:06As a result, Leonard was able to grab it. No runs, no hits. No errors, a walk.
- 1:54:11One left. We'll go to the bottom of the eighth. The Cubs are still in front, four to two.
- 1:54:18Still on our feet, there's one promise made. He's gonna win. He's gonna take it all.
- 1:54:32We'll go to the bottom of the eighth, and good kids fill me in on this now. I've got a feeling
- 1:54:59that since Smith continued to throw through the inning, that probably Jim Fry, Billy Connors,
- 1:55:05and Ruth Lunds talked it over. They said, all right, you're gonna come back out there.
- 1:55:33There's a double hit by a pitch in the first, popped up to say in the third.
- 1:55:38And a double with one out in the sixth and later scored on a young blood single.
- 1:55:43At that time, it tied the game a two, but the Cubs then went out in front with two more
- 1:55:49and lead four to two. Pitch by Ruth, went to Oliver, slicing fly ball, left center.
- 1:55:53Jenner coming over, and Jenner is there! And that ball gave him a little trouble.
- 1:55:57Yes, he was playing a little deeper for Oliver that time due to the fact that,
- 1:56:02earlier, Oliver sent one over his head, which he started in.
- 1:56:07Right.
- 1:56:08So he's playing deeper that time and had to come in to make the catch.
- 1:56:12And the reason you can tell he had trouble because you never want to see or neither does
- 1:56:17an outfielder want to catch a ball with the top of his glove down and he had to that time.
- 1:56:22This is right.
- 1:56:24But he's short enough to make the play.
- 1:56:28Here is Leonard.
- 1:56:29Leonard is 0 for 3.
- 1:56:31I want to tell you, the young Cubs fans, about a big promotion coming up Saturday, April 21st.
- 1:56:38When the Cubs entertain the Pirates.
- 1:56:48And a strike call to Leonard.
- 1:56:54Cubs are leading 4-2.
- 1:56:55Giants are batting in the eighth inning.
- 1:56:57Ruthven has pitched all the way against Davis and LaVelle.
- 1:57:01The pitch by Ruthven.
- 1:57:03Swing and a miss and he's still got some velocity.
- 1:57:06That's right.
- 1:57:07I was just going to say same thing.
- 1:57:08We still got a little busting on that fastball.
- 1:57:11Nice to have the folks in Lawrenceville, Illinois with us on WAKO.
- 1:57:18WAKO in Lawrenceville joining us.
- 1:57:22Four opening day.
- 1:57:23Here's the 1-2 pitch.
- 1:57:25Did he go?
- 1:57:26Two balls, two strikes.
- 1:57:32Remember right after the game, the scoreboard.
- 1:57:34We'll be back with you on Thursday night.
- 1:57:37Cubs and Giants go at it again to wrap up this two-game series.
- 1:57:41Mike Drukow, former Cub, will go against Chuck Rainey.
- 1:57:45The wind of the 2-2.
- 1:57:49Just missed ball three.
- 1:57:51Leonard the batter.
- 1:57:53Safe and a few choice in the first.
- 1:57:56Wind out the left in the third.
- 1:57:58Fly it out the left in the sixth.
- 1:57:59He is 0 for 3.
- 1:58:02Boy, last year you could remember the times when he hurt us.
- 1:58:05Leonard was a good, hot hitter.
- 1:58:06Bowled off way up to the right side.
- 1:58:09Two young Cub fans will want to be in the park on Sun Kissed Orange.
- 1:58:12So does Bounding Helmet Day.
- 1:58:13Saturday, April 21st, when the Cubs entertain the Pirates.
- 1:58:17Every youngster 13 and under.
- 1:58:18Leonard's Wrigley Field.
- 1:58:19We're receiving all-new White Cubs Bounding Helmet.
- 1:58:22That's right.
- 1:58:23This year's helmet day is all white with the Cubs Blue and Red Circle logo on the front.
- 1:58:303-2 pitch.
- 1:58:31May cups the middle of eighth base.
- 1:58:37Leonard gets his first hit of the day.
- 1:58:38That's hit number nine off Ruthven in seven and a third.
- 1:58:43And it will bring up Youngblood.
- 1:58:52Mel Hall is loosening in the bullpen.
- 1:58:55Those Gary Woods and Cotto.
- 1:59:00That's the first time we've seen three outfielders wanting up to the Cubs in the bullpen.
- 1:59:05And Lee Smith continues to heat it up on the bullpen mound.
- 1:59:09Youngblood 1 for 3.
- 1:59:11And a base hit in the sixth and drove in their second run.
- 1:59:19Youngblood waiting, stretched by Ruthven, checking Leonard at first.
- 1:59:22Pitch on the way.
- 1:59:23A little inside lull of all.
- 1:59:26The Giants also have their bullpen working.
- 1:59:28And you can bet since LaVelle has been in the game that it will be mitten in that bullpen now.
- 1:59:33Yes, you're right.
- 1:59:35Now Jimmy Fry is coming out.
- 1:59:38And as he heads toward the mound, we'll remind those youngsters again that those batting helmets are one of a kind.
- 1:59:45And you won't want to be without your son's his orange soda cups batting helmets.
- 1:59:49So make your plans now to be a Wrigley Field for Batting Helmet Day.
- 1:59:53And be sure to purchase your tickets in advance.
- 1:59:56That will be Saturday, April 21st.
- 2:00:00Jimmy Fry has reached the mound.
- 2:00:03He's telling Ruthven, you gave me everything you had.
- 2:00:06You pitched a heck of a game.
- 2:00:08And Ruthven did just that.
- 2:00:10And Big Lee Smith will be making his appearance trotting in for the bullpen.
- 2:00:16Well, he was thinking with us or we were thinking with him.
- 2:00:19So there's a pitching change in San Francisco.
- 2:00:22All right, Lee Smith's ready to work.
- 2:00:26Last year, Lenda League was saved with 29.
- 2:00:29With a great ERA of 165.
- 2:00:33And he comes in in a game situation and that's for sure.
- 2:00:38Lee Smith, 26 years old, fastball slider, straight change.
- 2:00:45Will seldom throw the cutter ball.
- 2:00:48And what he does, he'd rather show it to them.
- 2:00:51And the first buzz bomb is inside of the knees.
- 2:00:55Now, Youngblood, who is 1-4-3 in an RBI, goes to 2-0 with that count because Smith inherited a 1-0.
- 2:01:08Knowles is throwing in the Chicago bullpen.
- 2:01:11The pitch, swinging in a line right, spin by Bullock.
- 2:01:16A sinking liner that Bullock stretched out prone and could not get leather on it enough to keep the ball from going through.
- 2:01:26That will be a base hit.
- 2:01:28Yes. Youngblood is definitely a fastball hitter.
- 2:01:33That Smith is a fastball pitcher, so consequently it's 1 throwing his best pitch against a hitter who is climbing a fastball quite well, Youngblood.
- 2:01:45All right, it's the Cubs, four runs, 11 hits.
- 2:01:47The Giants, two runs, 10 hits.
- 2:01:49But the tying runs are on board and there's only one out.
- 2:01:52At the batter, Billy Davis.
- 2:01:59Davis batting with two on and one out, eight inning.
- 2:02:02Smith stretches, looks back.
- 2:02:04Big right-hander fires.
- 2:02:05Bullseye over the outside corner into the letters.
- 2:02:08And it's strike one.
- 2:02:10Davis was called out on strikes in the second.
- 2:02:12Called out again on strikes in the fourth, got a base hit in the sixth.
- 2:02:16Ruthven went seven in the third, nine hits.
- 2:02:19Two runs, but one of the runners on is Ruthven's responsibility.
- 2:02:24Struck out six.
- 2:02:26High foul on a playoff to the left, two strikes.
- 2:02:29He hit a batter.
- 2:02:33And the good kid will check his sheet.
- 2:02:36I don't think he walked anybody.
- 2:02:37He did walk him in.
- 2:02:38That's amazing, isn't it?
- 2:02:39First time out, it's great.
- 2:02:43So Ruthven, as he usually does, keeps you in a ballgame.
- 2:02:48Hits into the eighth inning.
- 2:02:49Now it's up to the bullfins.
- 2:02:51And Stoddard has replaced Knowles in the bullfin.
- 2:02:57Smith stretching, looking back, looks again to suck it.
- 2:03:01Brings him to the hitter, high outside with his fastball one and two.
- 2:03:06Julie Davis has one of their ten hits.
- 2:03:09Youngblood has two.
- 2:03:11Trio has two.
- 2:03:14Trio drove in a run in the first.
- 2:03:16Youngblood drove in a run in the sixth.
- 2:03:18Jody Davis's two-run double in the seventh is the difference right now.
- 2:03:23Four to two comes.
- 2:03:26Long look back and delivers.
- 2:03:28Swinging, high pop, shadow left, Noah out.
- 2:03:32Matthew's in.
- 2:03:34And Boa makes the play.
- 2:03:36Boy, Boa really stayed with that one, I want to tell you.
- 2:03:39Yes, he did.
- 2:03:40It was high, really.
- 2:03:41And it was getting a little dangerous because Matthews was coming on hard behind him.
- 2:03:44Right, but Matthews wasn't sure he could get to the ball.
- 2:03:47Consequently, he didn't holler.
- 2:03:49He let Boa back into him to make the play.
- 2:03:57A new member of this club, former Padre, worked his way onto this club in spring training.
- 2:04:05Richards will be the batter.
- 2:04:06He'll be batting left-handed against Lee Smith.
- 2:04:10And Scotty Thompson, former Cub, is on deck as another pinch hitter.
- 2:04:15But let's hope right now that he doesn't get to that.
- 2:04:18Wait for Thompson in the night, then.
- 2:04:20Hey, you don't think Scotty would be up there with some adrenaline pumping him up, do you?
- 2:04:27The stretch pitch by Smith, swing and a foul.
- 2:04:30That's a fastball bind.
- 2:04:31Yes, he did.
- 2:04:32Luckily, he fouled it.
- 2:04:37No balls, one strike.
- 2:04:38Smith in the relief of Ruthman.
- 2:04:40Stoddard continues to throw in the bullpen.
- 2:04:42Minton continues to throw in the giant bullpen.
- 2:04:46Cubs leading 4-2.
- 2:04:52Smith running, checking runners first and second with two downs.
- 2:04:56Long look back, kicks and he fires.
- 2:04:58Fastball up and away, evens the count of the ball and a strike.
- 2:05:03Outfielders know and have been told already by a couple of veteran infielders that tying run is at first base.
- 2:05:10That's the man we have to stop if a ball hits safely into the outfield.
- 2:05:15Don't make a mistake or throw into a wrong base in this situation.
- 2:05:19Here's the 1-1.
- 2:05:21Foul back.
- 2:05:22Good fastball again by Lee Smith.
- 2:05:29A situation where outfielders must play deep also, Milo.
- 2:05:33We don't want any ball hit over our head.
- 2:05:36We'd rather have a ball hit in front of us than getting past us, which would enable the tying runner score.
- 2:05:44Smith, 6'6", 235.
- 2:05:48Power pitcher delivers.
- 2:05:51Fastball and Jody wanted the appeal by Wendelstadt.
- 2:05:55He did appeal to Charlie Williams, but Williams said he did not go around.
- 2:05:59So now it's 2-2 with two out and two base runners.
- 2:06:06Leonard is second, Youngblood at first, two away.
- 2:06:10Big pitch by Smith.
- 2:06:12And here comes that big pitch.
- 2:06:14Smith and a miss and he's cracking him out with his hit.
- 2:06:17I didn't want to get to 3-2, which meant that the runners would be running.
- 2:06:21So Smith records his first strikeout.
- 2:06:23Seventh giant to struck out in the game.
- 2:06:25That fastball really had some action on it.
- 2:06:27No runs, two hits, no errors.
- 2:06:29The Giants leave a pair.
- 2:06:31We go to the ninth with the cuts in front, 4-2.
- 2:06:35I don't want to clean it. I don't want to fix it.
- 2:06:37I just want it to keep on running.
- 2:06:39What are you talking about?
- 2:06:40My water softener.
- 2:06:41Well, there's this new water softener, Salt Morton pellets with System Saver.
- 2:06:45Helps clean your softener automatically.
- 2:06:47Every time you recharge, it sort of stops trouble before it starts.
- 2:06:50That's it.
- 2:06:51So maybe I won't have to clean it or fix it or replace it for a long time.
- 2:06:55That's right. That's good.
- 2:06:57New Morton pellets with System Saver formula.
- 2:06:59As soon as you start adding System Saver pellets to your water softener,
- 2:07:03you could start adding to your softener's life.
- 2:07:13Our game moves to the ninth.
- 2:07:19Cubs batting leading 4-2.
- 2:07:23And Gary Lovell, who came on in the eighth inning, continues to work in the ninth.
- 2:07:27And the new catcher for San Francisco, Steve Nikosha,
- 2:07:31came up in the pirate organization.
- 2:07:33In fact, in the 79 World Series as a rookie catcher,
- 2:07:37Chuck Tanner had the confidence in to start him in four of the seven games.
- 2:07:42And he was traded out here last year because with Kenya coming on strong for the Pirates,
- 2:07:47he just had no job left.
- 2:07:49Then he had worked his way into the starting catcher for today's game,
- 2:07:52but got hurt in Sunday's exhibition game.
- 2:07:55I can't understand a man that can come in this late in the ball game
- 2:08:00and not being able to start if he's my number one catcher.
- 2:08:03Well, unless you're just afraid that he cannot swing the bat.
- 2:08:08And consequently, that must be the reason that he's in here for the ninth inning.
- 2:08:13All right, the first pitch is a strike called to Gary Matthews,
- 2:08:16and he swings and fouls one off to the right side.
- 2:08:18It'll carry over enough towards the tarp in front of those extra seats.
- 2:08:22They've got seats here today like you see in a playoff All-Star games in the World Series.
- 2:08:27Maybe they rehearsed for this for their All-Star game.
- 2:08:30That's correct.
- 2:08:32They're using the field boxes as what they're termed.
- 2:08:37Here's the 0-2 to Matthews, swing and a foul into the screen.
- 2:08:41Matthews has been on base three times, a walk, a single, and a walk.
- 2:08:46He scored run number three ahead of Morland when Jody Davis got the two-run double
- 2:08:51in deep right center in the seventh inning.
- 2:08:56Blow the ball.
- 2:08:57There are 54,188 here today of those 52,700 paid.
- 2:09:05A great crowd, and I feel good for Bob Lurie because they have tried to get this franchise back on the track,
- 2:09:11and this is a good opening crowd.
- 2:09:14Swing and a miss.
- 2:09:16I think that was the fourth ball that you were talking about.
- 2:09:21So that is strikeout number one for LaVelle.
- 2:09:25Fourth strikeout of a cub in the game.
- 2:09:30Here is Ronsay, 0 for 3.
- 2:09:32He's popped up three straight times after getting an intentional pass in the opening inning.
- 2:09:43Randy Lurch, a new member of their pitching staff, is throwing in the giant bullpen.
- 2:09:48Down the lower ball to the penguins.
- 2:09:51The Cubs about hit the giant 11-10, leading the score 4-2.
- 2:09:55Two errors in the game.
- 2:09:57They both belong to the Cubs.
- 2:10:00One went to a run, and the other just...
- 2:10:03A high drive.
- 2:10:04LaVelle going back.
- 2:10:06Going, going, and done.
- 2:10:08Holy Toledo.
- 2:10:10Did the penguin crank up on one for his first bit of the year?
- 2:10:14He felt it out of here to the left.
- 2:10:16Yes, indeed.
- 2:10:17Now he can dip his hat to those spoo birds, and there's a lot of them here remembering what they did to them, the giants, when he was with the Dodgers.
- 2:10:30He got a hold of it.
- 2:10:31Second cub home run of the day.
- 2:10:33Morland went off to sixth with one, and Faye gets one here, and it's a three-run lead for the Cubs.
- 2:10:44Morland takes a high fastball.
- 2:10:47St. Louis way out in front of the Dodgers.
- 2:10:50Kansas City beats the Yankees.
- 2:10:53Several games tonight.
- 2:10:54We'll talk about them when Lou and I get together with you on the scoreboard.
- 2:10:58There's a high foul way down the right side back into the seat.
- 2:11:02So it's one ball and one strike to Morland.
- 2:11:04Jody Davis due up next, and it'll be Durham.
- 2:11:16Now to look around, we're ready again.
- 2:11:18Pitch on the wood, swinging and fouling it down the right side.
- 2:11:24The penguin with that home run now has 253.
- 2:11:31When the good kid ranks it down, you can take it to the bank.
- 2:11:36253 career.
- 2:11:38Nice.
- 2:11:39Good.
- 2:11:40Two balls, two strikes.
- 2:11:43Jody Davis due next.
- 2:11:45He had a big hit, a two-run double in the seventh inning that broke the tie.
- 2:11:50Fouled up to the right side.
- 2:11:52It almost looks like Morland has made up his mind, batting against LaValle, that he's going to try to take him to right field.
- 2:11:59He's got a high foul ball that way.
- 2:12:01I think he's looking for that breaking pitch away from him or that fork ball.
- 2:12:06Here comes another 2-2 to Morland.
- 2:12:08Another high foul back to the right side.
- 2:12:10Now that wasn't the case of trying to go that way.
- 2:12:12That pitch was just by him, and he got back on it late.
- 2:12:15I don't think you'll try to go now, Armando, with two strikes on him.
- 2:12:19He's going to just hit a strike.
- 2:12:22Two and two.
- 2:12:26Eppertor Chuck Rainey will pitch Thursday night against Mike Kruko.
- 2:12:30Here's the 2-2.
- 2:12:32Check the swing.
- 2:12:33Fouled it.
- 2:12:35Frank Robinson, who's thrown a few, picked it up, lifted it to the bat boy.
- 2:12:42And he said, when you get up in the booth today, say hello to that other Hall of Famer here today.
- 2:12:47Oh, he's a good guy.
- 2:12:50Swing!
- 2:12:51And a miss.
- 2:12:52The bottom drops out.
- 2:12:53You talk about a sinking fastball.
- 2:12:55That was a sinking fastball.
- 2:12:59Strikeout number five against the Cubs, two in the inning, and in his relief appearance today for LaVell.
- 2:13:06Oh, it's great to get back into the saddle here.
- 2:13:10Especially when you're leading by three runs going into the night.
- 2:13:15That has something to do with it.
- 2:13:16It is.
- 2:13:17And the big boy on the mound.
- 2:13:19There is a strike.
- 2:13:22So Jody Davis, two for four.
- 2:13:25Voa has three hits.
- 2:13:28Here's the pitch.
- 2:13:29Fouled or off, down here below the fret box.
- 2:13:40Drive's on hand.
- 2:13:43Dave Van Dyck, the beat man, raised arms.
- 2:13:47Out to do some columns.
- 2:13:49The sun times, a tribute occurrence with Fred Mitchell who covers the Cubs on a daily basis.
- 2:13:54And award-winning columnist Bob Verde is here.
- 2:14:07The saucer is fouled down to Zimmer.
- 2:14:10Race on.
- 2:14:13He joined us in the later stages of swing training again and come on up with his hair.
- 2:14:24Here is the O2 pitch.
- 2:14:26Swing and a foul by Jody Davis.
- 2:14:42LaValle shakes off his side.
- 2:14:44Now he's ready.
- 2:14:46Way outside.
- 2:14:47He waits to the fastball.
- 2:14:52Cubs are leading five to two, picking up an insurance run and a long homer by Say in this night's inning.
- 2:14:58Twain's going to miss.
- 2:15:00And he's struck him out.
- 2:15:01Boy, I tell you, he threw a wicked fastball away.
- 2:15:06And he strikes out the side with the home run, enabled the Cubs to get ready for the bottom of the ninth, leading by this score, Cubs five, Giants two.
- 2:15:18Calhoun Home Federal Savings is now offering a wide variety of consumer loans.
- 2:15:23So if you're in need of a loan, ask Calhoun Home about their very attractive rates and terms.
- 2:15:29Calhoun's consumer loan rates are sucked in lower than most of the competition because they charge simple rather than add on interest, which is commonly charged by many lenders.
- 2:15:40But at Calhoun, the more a borrower pays off, the more the amount of interest charged.
- 2:15:45Also at Calhoun, there are no penalties for early reshaping.
- 2:15:49So if you need an auto loan for a new or used vehicle, personal loan for any purpose, a home improvement or student loan,
- 2:15:56you can find one at Calhoun where they're committed to serving all your financial needs.
- 2:16:02Calhoun Home is an equal opportunity lender.

- 2:16:11Stop at any Calhoun Home financial center.
- 2:16:16We've got a change in high field.
- 2:16:19It'll be Mal Hall.
- 2:16:23A little defensive maneuver here by Jimmy Fry.
- 2:16:29Also, keeping Hall in the ball game might have a little attitude problem corrected.
- 2:16:40Now, Pittman will be the bench hitter for LaBelle.
- 2:16:45Utility infield.
- 2:16:46He's filled us in some spring games that he can play about any place you put him.
- 2:16:50Go, Pittman will bat for LaBelle.
- 2:16:56That's Johnny LaMaster.
- 2:16:58He's already on deck.
- 2:16:59And it'll be Manny Friot.
- 2:17:01Lee Smith trying to go after that first hitter here.
- 2:17:04As the Cubs lead 5-2, they've out hit the Giants 12-10.
- 2:17:10First pitch on the way.
- 2:17:11Oh, guy right down the middle for a cold strike.
- 2:17:14Also with us covering from Harald Sitty, the Arlington Harald, Mark Ruda.
- 2:17:19I don't know how I forgot him a minute ago because we must have talked for an hour at the workout yesterday.
- 2:17:26Mark Ruda on his first trip to the West and enjoying the city by the bay.
- 2:17:34And with good reason.
- 2:17:37He has a good appetite.
- 2:17:39It's a good spot to visit.
- 2:17:42The ball makes it 2-1.
- 2:17:44Pittman the pitch hitter, LaMaster on deck and Manny Friot, inning number 9.
- 2:17:49Cubs are in front, 5-2.
- 2:17:54Smith kicks and fires.
- 2:17:55Swing and a foul.
- 2:17:56Heads the fastball by.
- 2:17:57Foul to back, pass the strain.
- 2:17:592-2.
- 2:18:01So great to have with us on opening day, KSCT in Davenport, Iowa.
- 2:18:06WJNCFN in Green Castle, Indiana.
- 2:18:10WNNO, Wisconsin Dells Wisconsin and WAKO, Lawrenceville, Illinois.
- 2:18:15Not to the right side, Durham over.
- 2:18:17Smith's got to get over to take the peg and just did get it.
- 2:18:20Man, that was close.
- 2:18:22I want to tell you something, Pittman got down that line.
- 2:18:25Yes, indeed.
- 2:18:26And let me tell you, Durham had to throw the ball over here in a tough place for Durham, but he made it very nicely.
- 2:18:34And even Davis was out to just get to 5.
- 2:18:37Man, oh man, you know Durham had to go quite a ways off that line to make that play.
- 2:18:41I didn't like it.
- 2:18:42I didn't like to see Durham go that far off the base because Sandberg could have made the play.
- 2:18:46I think that will come now with him playing there more.
- 2:18:49And they'll have to get used to that again.
- 2:18:52And in fact, he and Sandberg are talking about it right now.
- 2:18:55This is right.
- 2:18:56Here is WMASTER, 1-4.
- 2:18:58Started their first inning with a base hit, stole the base, later scored on a 3-0 single.
- 2:19:03Here's the pitch to Eminence Lowe a ball.
- 2:19:08You know, there are still tickets available for the Monday, April 16th, meet the Cubs luncheon.
- 2:19:13Call 736-0111 for all the details.
- 2:19:18That'll be Monday the 16th.
- 2:19:21Fastball backs him out of there, 2-0.
- 2:19:25All that Lee has to do now is throw a strike, make them hit themselves on base.
- 2:19:31Don't give them a chance.
- 2:19:32No, that's right.
- 2:19:34They have to get the hits to get out.
- 2:19:36Got eight guys out there to help him.
- 2:19:38They're right.
- 2:19:39And of course, with the 5-2 score, with the 3-1 lead, Chicago 5-2, the match is taken all the way there.
- 2:19:47Now, 2-1 the count.
- 2:19:51Smith kicks and he brings it.
- 2:19:54Up high with his fastball, 3-1.
- 2:19:56Don't walk this guy.
- 2:20:02Dallas Green down below hoping that Smithy can end this thing along with his assistant, the traveling secretary, Don Cox.
- 2:20:10The pitch.
- 2:20:11He walks in.
- 2:20:16Boy, that makes that say Hallmerfig now because otherwise you'd have been bringing the tying run to the plate here.
- 2:20:23Walk number one by Smith.
- 2:20:27First walk of the game given to the Giants, Manny Trillo, the batter.
- 2:20:31And of course, the head of studio broadcasting, Jim Donnell, out for the opener.
- 2:20:36And the McManor, the chairman of the board of the Cubs.
- 2:20:40And the chief operating officer, Jim Finks, is here.
- 2:20:44So make an impression, Cubbies.
- 2:20:48You got the big guys looking on here.
- 2:20:52Manny Trillo, 2-4, a single, a double, and an RBI.
- 2:20:57Smith will go to the stretch.
- 2:20:59We'll master with a lead at first.
- 2:21:00Pitch on the way.
- 2:21:01Right down the middle for a called strike.
- 2:21:03Jack Clark on deck.
- 2:21:09We don't want Clark to hit.
- 2:21:11Let's get Trillo to hit and do a double play.
- 2:21:14No ball, one strike.
- 2:21:17Pitch on the way.
- 2:21:18Low outside, and it's one and one.
- 2:21:23Big Lee Smith trying to bolt one down for Ruthven, who deserves to win this game.
- 2:21:29He gave you a fine starting assignment, as he did.
- 2:21:33One ball, one strike.
- 2:21:37Smith with the belt looking back.
- 2:21:38Pitch on the way.
- 2:21:40Swinging wide, all center.
- 2:21:42Turn air, back step, five-step, makes the play two down in the night.
- 2:21:50Now you see, they go back to point up the importance of that insurance home run by Say.
- 2:21:56You'd have had Clark, a dangerous hitter, stepping in now, representing the tying run as it is.
- 2:22:02Even if he jacks one out of here, you've still got a one-run lead.
- 2:22:05He is still in the lead, correct.
- 2:22:08A three-run lead is so important when you get into the seventh, eighth, and ninth innings.
- 2:22:18Jack Clark got a base hit in the third inning.
- 2:22:20He's one for four.
- 2:22:26The pitch to him is outside of war.
- 2:22:31Davis is going out to talk to Lee Smith, just telling him, get the ball over the plate.
- 2:22:36You don't want Oliver to come up there as the tying run.
- 2:22:40And wrapped in the game, the scoreboard, all of these same conversations.
- 2:22:47Jack Clark, one ball, no strikes.
- 2:22:49Jack of the runners, first drill, playing behind the runner now with two away.
- 2:22:52And Clark tried to butt his way on with Say playing back, but it was high and away.
- 2:22:58He didn't connect on it, and it's two balls and no strikes.
- 2:23:06Milo Hamilton, Lou Boudreau, comes radio from Candlestick.
- 2:23:11We need an out to open up this season on a winning note.
- 2:23:16Here's the two-ohs.
- 2:23:18And a strike right under the letters on the inside corner.
- 2:23:21Two balls, one strike to Clark.
- 2:23:23Now Oliver's due up next.
- 2:23:26You talked about you didn't want to see Clark hit.
- 2:23:29Well, you don't want this thing for long and give Oliver a chance to bat either.
- 2:23:33Here's the pitch.
- 2:23:35Swinging, line drive left field, Matthew's back.
- 2:23:37That ball's tail's over him.
- 2:23:39Matthew fires it in in a hurry to Bowe.
- 2:23:42And it's a one and three combination here.
- 2:23:46Burson Murray, that line drive, talk about how hard it was hit.
- 2:23:52He really thought that when it left the infield that Matthew had a chance to catch the ball, but it kept on sailing.
- 2:23:59It just got over his head.
- 2:24:01The ball was hit like a bullet.
- 2:24:03He had no chance after that ball got over his head.
- 2:24:06If he had gotten under that ball, that would have been gone.
- 2:24:10A 11-hit for the Giants, the Cubs have 12.
- 2:24:14Clark's getting a second hit.
- 2:24:16And now here is now Oliver, and he represents the time run.
- 2:24:21Now the complexion of this inning has changed.
- 2:24:23Runners first and third, two down.
- 2:24:25Pitch to Oliver.
- 2:24:27Line drive hit at the left header.
- 2:24:29The run is in.
- 2:24:30The ball got by Matthew.
- 2:24:32Mark will come to third.
- 2:24:34The throw wisely comes into second.
- 2:24:36He just want Oliver coming in there and destroying the distance.
- 2:24:40That's right.
- 2:24:41If Matthew's a hit in the ear on that play, he's got to allow his front to go to third.
- 2:24:49Oliver with an RBI single.
- 2:24:51It's a 5-3 game.
- 2:24:53The tying runs are aboard, and Leonard the batter.
- 2:24:59Oliver getting the RBI.
- 2:25:02It's a 5-3 game.
- 2:25:06And Leonard, one for four, and it makes this the last time up.
- 2:25:11It's a 5-3 Cubs, but it's getting a little tricky at candlesticks.
- 2:25:28Jeff Leonard, one for four.
- 2:25:31Clark is the runner at third.
- 2:25:33Oliver the runner at first.
- 2:25:34Oliver represents the tying run.
- 2:25:37The hits are even at 12.
- 2:25:39The Cubs lead 5-3.
- 2:25:41Stoddard is throwing in the bullpen, and Lee Smith still needs it out.
- 2:25:49It's to Leonard.
- 2:25:50He right calls.
- 2:25:53No sense holding back now, this guy.
- 2:25:55No, no, no.
- 2:25:56Got to go after him right now.
- 2:26:01Two on, two out, a run in, Cubs lead by two in a 5-3 game.
- 2:26:07It's the end of the ninth inning.
- 2:26:10Smith ready.
- 2:26:11At the belt, looks back over, delivers.
- 2:26:14Right through calls.
- 2:26:17He's letting it hang out now.
- 2:26:19Don't gauge it right now.
- 2:26:23Now I'd like to see him come from underneath.
- 2:26:28But if he does, throw the ball away.
- 2:26:32Don't throw it, try to get it inside to make a mistake, not time has been called.
- 2:26:41Getter steps out, Harry Wendelstam, the new crew chief.
- 2:26:46But everybody knows time has been called.
- 2:26:48Clark at third, Oliver first, a walk, and two hits in the inning.
- 2:26:54Here's the 0-2.
- 2:26:56Oh, I thought Wendelstam was going to call it.
- 2:26:59Throw it at Jody, throw it at Smith.
- 2:27:03Oh, Harry, don't prolong the agony.
- 2:27:07One ball, two strikes.
- 2:27:13I thought he had it.
- 2:27:15Now let's see if he can come back and get it.
- 2:27:17One, two pitch, and a foul, and he's still alive.
- 2:27:23Just nailed it right off Jody's skin guard, rolled up to the right side,
- 2:27:27and it's still one ball and two strikes.
- 2:27:30And a crowd of over 54,000, and I'd say 45,000 is still in here.
- 2:27:37And they are having a reason to stay here because the Giants are thrusting in the ninth,
- 2:27:43trailing five to three.
- 2:27:45Good press, good press.
- 2:27:49He's got it, he's got it.
- 2:27:51And this ball game is over.
- 2:27:54Second strikeout for Smitty, eight Giants a strikeout in the game.
- 2:27:58Oh, brother.
- 2:28:00Palpitations, set your high feet.
- 2:28:03In house, one run, two hits, one error, an error on Matthews.
- 2:28:10A walk, they leave two.
- 2:28:15And the final score has become, get off on the right foot to start the 1984 season,
- 2:28:21with Ruthven pitching at the home run back of Morland,
- 2:28:26a stray and a bit too undoubled by Jody Davis.
- 2:28:29The Cubs have knocked off the Giants five to three.
- 2:28:34Good kid, our ball game here today.
- 2:28:36We had a good one in the first inning.
- 2:28:38They took advantage of LaMaster getting on.
- 2:28:41He went after a Ruthven hanging breaking ball.
- 2:28:44After he had shown the good fast ball, LaMaster reached, stole the base.
- 2:28:47Jody tried to slow him out and couldn't.
- 2:28:49The error got him the third.
- 2:28:51Trio got him home.
- 2:28:53And the thing about that inning was that the top of the inning before,
- 2:28:56when Duneer started off with a hit,
- 2:28:59and at that time it looked like a big play, it didn't turn out that way,
- 2:29:02when Renly the stunning catcher with a 2-1 count on Sandberg after Duneer hit,
- 2:29:06called for two straight pitch outs.
- 2:29:08You just don't see that.
- 2:29:10Well, I thought that was the smartest play of the ball game,
- 2:29:12besides Smith retiring the last hitter.
- 2:29:15But nevertheless, as you've mentioned,
- 2:29:17you very seldom see that to make the count go to 3-1.
- 2:29:21So this is something that perhaps is going through the league.
- 2:29:25Now, with Duneer as leadoff man and Sandberg,
- 2:29:29who they worked very well together in their batting second.
- 2:29:34So we may have to look for that a little more often.
- 2:29:37We may have to go to hit run earlier or give Duneer the green light earlier.
- 2:29:41But this today, I have to say, was deeply a group victory.
- 2:29:46You've got to throw in the great pitching performance of Roof and Milo.
- 2:29:49I thought it did an outstanding job.
- 2:29:52The best are just outduels Davis along until he got the 2-1 lead,
- 2:29:56and then he just tires.
- 2:29:58All right, it was 1-0 then with that 3-0 hit, getting LaMastre home in the first.
- 2:30:03It stayed that way until the fourth, and Larry Bowe got his second of three hits, a double.
- 2:30:08And he drove in Durham who had walked, and with two out, Durham pedaled around, and we were tied.
- 2:30:13With the score tied at one and the thick spinning,
- 2:30:16Morland stepped in to lead off the Cubs' fifth.
- 2:30:20Here's the fifth to Morland.
- 2:30:23There's a drive.
- 2:30:24Deep left field, way back.
- 2:30:26It might be out of here.
- 2:30:27Holy!
- 2:30:28There he is!
- 2:30:29It's there.
- 2:30:31Holy cow!
- 2:30:33Morland has given the Cubs the lead.
- 2:30:36First time in this day he's hit the ball on the button.
- 2:30:40Morland's home at breaking the tie, and now Youngblood in the sixth inning gets a base hit to get Oliver home to tie it again quickly 2-2.
- 2:30:50Then in the seventh inning with one out Matthews won.
- 2:30:53With two out, Morland got his second hit of the day, and that brought Jody Davis to bat.
- 2:31:00Drive out into right center twice and Jody Davis running.
- 2:31:04No!
- 2:31:05He'll be up against the French.
- 2:31:06Matthews will score.
- 2:31:083-2.
- 2:31:10And as Morland crosses, it is 4-2, a two run double by Jody Davis.
- 2:31:19In the ninth inning, leading by the score of 4-2, Matthews started the inning by striking out against Gary Lavelle.
- 2:31:26All the other actions for scoring had been against the starter Mark Davis.
- 2:31:30With one out in the ninth, Ron Say was 0-3 and then...
- 2:31:36Going back, going, going and...
- 2:31:40Done!
- 2:31:41Holy cow, he knows it's a Penguin Clank-Up on one for his first inning of the year.
- 2:31:47He felt sit out of here to left.
- 2:31:50Now the Cubs on Penguin power had a five to two lead, and it looked as though they were going to need it because in the ninth inning,
- 2:31:58Smith who had come on in the eighth and gotten out of a bit of a jam, got into some trouble when he walked Lamaster with one out.
- 2:32:05Trio then flied out, but Clark got his second hit of the day.
- 2:32:09Oliver got to base him to make it 5-3, but then the big right-hander from Louisiana struck on Leonard, and as you said, that was one of the big ones.
- 2:32:18Yes, and, Ronald, as we mentioned in the last day or two from spring training, I did not think Smith was throwing well.
- 2:32:24He was not the fastball pitcher that we knew, but today he was much different.
- 2:32:30Even though they got three hits off him and scored a run, I thought he was throwing like the Smith of last year.
- 2:32:36All right, the happy total board, Cubs 5-12-3, lead 10, Ruth from the winner, save Smith, winning RBI Davis, and for the Giants 3-12-0, they strand 11, and Mark Davis was the starter and loser.
- 2:32:50So, with the off day tomorrow, we'll be back with you on Thursday evening when Chuck Rainey will go against Mike Kruko.
- 2:32:57And that's the scoreboard for today.
- 2:33:01The scoreboard has been brought to you by your Chicagoland and Northern Indiana Carrick Muppler Shots.
- 2:33:08Don't worry, call the Carrick Man.
- 2:33:11In Chicago, stay tuned for what's left of the Bobby Kamen show on this day, then Sports Central.
- 2:33:18I'm Milo Hamilton thanking you for being with us. See you on Thursday.
- 2:33:22This has been another presentation of WGN Sports.
