Transcript
- 0:09Hi, good afternoon. Welcome Miller and Condon on a
- 0:12Wednesday. The Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 0:15Trent Condon, Ken Miller for the next couple of hours talking
- 0:18sports with you. Thanks for starting your
- 0:19afternoon here with us. We'll take you until 2 off the
- 0:22bench at that time, 2 until 5 overtime Iowa, 5 to 6.
- 0:26Here's what's coming up with a Trent and myself.
- 0:28We'll take a a look at the Big 12 basketball wives with a
- 0:32friend, Matt Postons, who covers it for Heartland College Sports.
- 0:35Deep dive into a really fun conference to watch.
- 0:39We will do that with Matt Postons at 12:25.
- 0:43One O clock off to Chicago. We'll go.
- 0:45He's David Kaplan. Chicago sports topics with Cappy
- 0:49Centurion Stone of Iowa sponsors that.
- 0:51And then Tommy Birch, our final guest, covers the Iowa State
- 0:55women, covers the Drake women and of course the Iowa Cubs.
- 0:58So we got a number of things to get to with Tommy and he will
- 1:01join us coming up here at 1:30. Trent will make some plays
- 1:04before we get out of here just before 2:00 and get home and get
- 1:08everything set and turn on the TV, the Big 10 network for 6:00.
- 1:12When off we go to Iowa's. They will host USC as the Hawks
- 1:16back on the floor tonight. But as Big 10 play, I thought
- 1:18the spotlight last night, Trent and I was thoroughly
- 1:21entertained. I really was.
- 1:22This Nebraska, Michigan game was was good.
- 1:25I was pulling for, well, I'm a Husker, as you know.
- 1:28He knows this. Every Oscar Miller, but I wanted
- 1:32him to keep it going right and undermanned Mass, not playing
- 1:36fragers. How do you say his name?
- 1:38The second is the freshman's the third leading scorer.
- 1:42He wasn't able to even make the trip so they were short handed
- 1:46but man they fought their you know what's often if it would
- 1:49have should have Michigan got him late and referees swallowing
- 1:52a whistle when Hoiberg was clearly charged as what's his
- 1:56name, Kenny comes charging down the lane right into him.
- 1:59No call lay up good and that Michigan would go on to win the
- 2:03game. But hell of a game nonetheless.
- 2:05Referees calls, misses or not, 2 point game after the 1st 20
- 2:09minutes and then the defenses on both sides really tightened up
- 2:12but a hell of a game. Yeah, Frager and Mass being out
- 2:14of this game, I think a couple of things are true out of this
- 2:17one and I was so happy that I had it on the DVR and was able
- 2:20to watch it when I got home. You.
- 2:21Had you were basketball high school?
- 2:23Last yeah, it was on the South side at the round.
- 2:25I love it. I saw the picture.
- 2:26That is such a cool building. Yes, it really is.
- 2:29It is one of the jewels of high school athletics.
- 2:31You know, one of the old school gyms that is still around and
- 2:35they've done a nice job of making that a real fun
- 2:37environment for the kids. But SL Roosevelt, so Roosevelt
- 2:40just got about a couple weeks ago, a transfer eligible who was
- 2:44at North Damir Coleman is his name.
- 2:48He's 69. He came off the bench, he scored
- 2:5016 and he what shots he's a junior.
- 2:54He it's going to be a problem. So Roosevelt's 11 and three, but
- 2:57their strength, the schedule is not towards the top of the
- 3:01powers like Dubuque senior over on the east side and and Cedar
- 3:04Rapids, Kennedy, Italy, what they've been able to do Cedar
- 3:06Falls, who's the number one team in the state who beat Waukee
- 3:09Northwest and of course all the suburban schools around here.
- 3:11But if you get your sub state, that's going to be coming up
- 3:14here in a couple of weeks and you see Rose not that soon.
- 3:18It's coming up. If you see Roosevelt's the two
- 3:21or three seed in your sub state. You're not liking that draw.
- 3:25Start doing some homework because that Roosevelt team,
- 3:28they got a bunch of. Different kids name again.
- 3:30Coleman is the last name Demir Yep D apostrophe Mir Damir
- 3:34Coleman. He is a difference maker.
- 3:36They have the 8th leading scorer in the state and I'm not sure
- 3:41but they have a Newman kid on the team.
- 3:43I wonder if that's Newman, David Newman.
- 3:45I wonder if that's his kid. He was a senior.
- 3:47He had three, three pointers in the first quarter.
- 3:49Not sure of the connection there.
- 3:50I was up in the catbird way up there at the Roundhouse spot.
- 3:53Didn't have a chance to talk to anybody.
- 3:55But if that's the case, he can fill it up from the outside.
- 3:58Still looking for maybe a dark horse candidate to punch their
- 4:01ticket to state. I like the Rough Riders there.
- 4:03You go good stuff. Well, I like the Huskers, and I
- 4:06like them more after they got beat last night.
- 4:07Trent, how about that? I wasn't sure.
- 4:10Right? I mean, yeah, 20, you know, but
- 4:12can is it fool's gold? Well, you can't win 20 games by
- 4:15a fluke, but where do they fit? Is this a legitimate team?
- 4:19And after they got beat last night, again short handed, I I
- 4:22came with an entirely different opinion about Hoiberg Huskers.
- 4:26I'm right there with you. I think we learned even more. 20
- 4:29straight wins. We learn more in one loss than
- 4:32we did in those twenty consecutive victories to begin
- 4:34the season. And it goes from.
- 4:36It's a nice story, but there's not sustainability.
- 4:38It's Nebraska after all. They can't make a run.
- 4:40They've never won an NCAA Tournament game ever.
- 4:43They're the only power conference team to never win an
- 4:47NCAA Tournament game. Northwestern finally won one a
- 4:50couple years back. They are the only one that has
- 4:53left that has never won a game, a single game in the NCAA
- 4:57tournament at minimum as a team that's getting the second
- 4:59weekend. But if Mass is back, Fraker's
- 5:02going to come back and he'll be healthy.
- 5:03He's just sick at this point in time.
- 5:05This team learned a lot about them.
- 5:08And it's not just three-point variants that they're going to
- 5:10make a bunch of three pointers last night.
- 5:11You know, they're 1132 good, but not great by any means.
- 5:15That's not. Really good in the first half.
- 5:17On the other side, Michigan, and after what they did earlier this
- 5:21year when they beat San Diego State by 40, follow that up with
- 5:27a 30 point win against Auburn and then culminating with a 40
- 5:31point win against Gonzaga. That's all it took for me.
- 5:34It wasn't just that it was this might be the best team we've
- 5:36ever seen. I'm with you.
- 5:37I remember having that conversation.
- 5:39There is something to be said though about Dusty May, who I
- 5:43think is a tremendous coach. And Indiana screwed the pooch on
- 5:46this one. An Indiana guy that wanted to go
- 5:48there. Instead, they gave Woodson
- 5:50another year and now they got De Vries.
- 5:53This is going to be something I think that Indiana fans are
- 5:55going to ruin the day. But that aside, Dusty May is an
- 5:57excellent coach, but remember excellent coaches when we're in
- 6:01November, How many years over the last, I don't know, 30-5
- 6:03years that Kay was there that they'd go to Maui and win.
- 6:07They go to the San Juan Shootout and win.
- 6:10They go to Alaska and win. When you have an elite level
- 6:13coach, you can do that and especially in today's
- 6:15environment at the beginning of the season, everybody's trying
- 6:18to figure out line UPS out well. When you have somebody that's
- 6:21elite, I think Dusty mate is elite.
- 6:22So you think they were ahead of the curve as far as they were
- 6:25OK? I think they they were ahead of
- 6:27everybody else at that point and everybody else is gay.
- 6:30How about this Michigan? They've been covered in seven
- 6:32straight games, now 7. In a row?
- 6:34Is that just Vegas overvaluing? Them, I think that's a part of
- 6:37it. That's fair.
- 6:38But also look at some of those games.
- 6:40That Penn State team is terrible.
- 6:41Bad, yes. They struggled one by two.
- 6:44They lose at home, two way above average Wisconsin team at home.
- 6:50You lose to a team like that. You struggle against Washington,
- 6:53who's not even a tournament team.
- 6:55You struggle against Oregon, who's maybe not even an NIT
- 6:58team. They're going to the crown.
- 6:59These are the kind of squads that we're talking about at this
- 7:02point. I think Michigan and they play
- 7:05dumb. How many careless turnovers did
- 7:07they have last night? No, I was watching it.
- 7:08Fast forward, you know, I was getting through it pretty
- 7:10quickly. But I'm like, where was that?
- 7:12Then I hit pause and I hit like, what?
- 7:14What was that? 119 turnovers?
- 7:16But it wasn't just the 19 turnovers.
- 7:17It was the careless nature and they can't shoot.
- 7:20And we're talking about a lot of things here.
- 7:21To win a national championship. I know the Big 10 never wins
- 7:24national championships. I mean, that's another thing
- 7:26outside of football, they don't win national championships.
- 7:28Certainly a men's basketball, it's been a quarter century.
- 7:30However, this Michigan team, they're crossing.
- 7:33So let me ask you this. Which of these these two teams
- 7:36in the big tennis stock has fallen further in your mind,
- 7:38Purdue or Michigan? There's another one right now.
- 7:42Michigan is still 19 to 1. Purdue, on the other hand, has
- 7:44lost three straight. And it's not just the losses
- 7:47that they've had it. It's just the way that they've
- 7:49been playing. There's an interesting number, a
- 7:53new number over with my boy Ken Pomeroy, a new metric, a new
- 7:57metric that he has been measuring starting in the new
- 7:59year. And it is the distance of your
- 8:02two point shots basically showing, are you guys getting to
- 8:06the rim, they getting in the paint or are you settling for
- 8:08those mid range jumpers that we know analytically are awful.
- 8:12And Mccollum's talked about it. All kinds of coaches talk about
- 8:15this. Long twos, brutal, never want to
- 8:17do that. Even floaters not considered a
- 8:20good shot in today's age of basketball.
- 8:22Purdue, these last three losses, they have had a very high 2
- 8:27point distance. They're settling.
- 8:28They're not getting to the rim. And when you're not getting to
- 8:30the rim, they're also not getting to the free throw line.
- 8:32They kind of culminate together. A new metric that I'm going to
- 8:35be keeping my eye on a little bit more.
- 8:37Hopefully this is something that can unlock something for me in
- 8:39college basketball. Why did you have a bad night
- 8:41yesterday? One and two, yeah, yeah, after
- 8:442IN133 on the week. Trading water you.
- 8:48Losing the juice. There's juice too, yeah.
- 8:50No, I know, I know. Let's talk, I guess about the,
- 8:53the, the national story that's going around just for a minute.
- 8:55I don't want to spend a ton of time on it, but it is it is
- 8:58somewhat look, I didn't know Jimmie Johnson was on Twitter
- 9:01until yesterday. Full disclosure, And I'm
- 9:03guessing most of the country feels the same way.
- 9:06But when you've got a guy of that ilk in in Jimmie Johnson,
- 9:08who obviously, you know, won Super Bowls as a as a head coach
- 9:11and is in the Hall of Fame, The fact that Bill Belichick did not
- 9:16get in on the 1st, I mean, what are we doing?
- 9:18What are we doing? By what measure Is he not a
- 9:21first ballot in Hall of Famer? Because they cheated?
- 9:23Did they? I mean, they've retracted the
- 9:25story on the spy gate during the Olympics or during the the
- 9:28playoffs. The paper, the writer that put
- 9:31it out there had to retract it because it wasn't just
- 9:33Deflategate. Are we still upset about that?
- 9:35That's going to keep. Belichick, who won 6 Super Bowls
- 9:38as a head coach, 2 as an assistant coach, has been to
- 9:40more Super Bowls than any coach we're going to keep.
- 9:43I hate the guy I don't like. Him.
- 9:46And I think I speak for most people, but how is this guy not
- 9:48in the freaking Hall of Fame from the jump, please.
- 9:53I think we found out that Tom Brady was more important than
- 9:55Bill Belichick. When he went to Tampa, Yeah.
- 9:57Well, if you don't have a quarterback, how many times you
- 9:59said you have a quarterback, you don't have a chance.
- 10:01That was, I think that pushed. Who is it?
- 10:04Belichick, Brady, that conversation that was happening
- 10:06for years and years. That pushed it I think, pretty
- 10:08easily to that side of the equation.
- 10:11You couple it with his persona, but I think there's something to
- 10:15do with that. But to have a six time Super
- 10:18Bowl champion, to have a guy that won two more as a defensive
- 10:21coordinator with the Giants, to not have this guy, you wonder
- 10:26what else is going on and maybe more importantly, going forward
- 10:29in the NFL, are they voting on this correctly?
- 10:3250 people coming together. Is this the way that we should
- 10:36be doing it? Because I read, was it Mike
- 10:39Sando? I think it was.
- 10:40He was one of them. Yeah.
- 10:41And he was talking about at least the theory that he had.
- 10:44There was a group. Belichick's going to be fine.
- 10:47Let's get together. We want to push this guy.
- 10:50All these writers know each other, right?
- 10:52And I'm sure they've had many talks, probably over a couple of
- 10:54veils about guys we think should be Hall of Famers.
- 10:57Let's all get together. We're going to be have this
- 10:59betting block together. We'll leave Belichick off.
- 11:02He's going to have enough votes. It's going to be fine.
- 11:04We're going to push this guy, Player he.
- 11:06Doesn't need mine because he's going to get in he's.
- 11:08Going to get in and if you get all of a sudden it goes from two
- 11:11of those guys, all of a sudden it's five of those guys and
- 11:13there's a couple other that Belichick was mean to him at a
- 11:15press conference. We had Bill Polling's running
- 11:17around the room and saying, you know, and he's got Dungy because
- 11:19Dungy hates him too. Doesn't like he's not a Belich
- 11:22guy. There's another former coach on
- 11:25that list of former GM, but I don't know, it just it just to
- 11:28me, it kind of diminishes Canton.
- 11:31Yes, it's a it's a black mark. It is.
- 11:34There's no doubt you have candidates that should Rodger
- 11:38Craig be in there, should Ken Anderson be in there, should
- 11:40Elsie Greenwood. Those are some of the names that
- 11:43try to push Robert Kraft. Is in there OK?
- 11:46He spends money. He writes checks.
- 11:48He's got a ton of money. He's the owner.
- 11:50He sits in the freaking box, right?
- 11:52And what did he change? He he kept football in Boston, I
- 11:57guess because they were on their way to Saint Louis.
- 11:59If if he didn't go or Hartford, that was another place that they
- 12:02were talking about building a stadium.
- 12:03OK, that's fine. He kept.
- 12:04For the, for the, for the Massachusetts community.
- 12:07Exactly that doesn't make you illuminate you into I need to be
- 12:11in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
- 12:12I I don't get that there. There's one guy that I think
- 12:15owner that should be in there. It's not even the Rooney, Art
- 12:18Rooney going back. So hang on a second, let me
- 12:21there's one owner that you is he and he currently owns the team.
- 12:25He does. All right, let me see if I can
- 12:27figure this out. I So the first owner, whenever
- 12:29you say owner, the first one that pops in your head is Jerry
- 12:31Jones. And that's the guy and the only
- 12:33reason. It's nothing about on the
- 12:35football field, though The 90s dynasty was excellent.
- 12:38It's what he did to make the NFL the financial bohemian that they
- 12:43are. When he went out there and said
- 12:46hell with you, I'm not doing a deal with a Reebok.
- 12:48I'm bringing Nike in, you might say.
- 12:50It was coke and. Pepsi, that was another one that
- 12:52he had. That was another huge one.
- 12:53Yeah, fine. Guess what?
- 12:55My stadium. I'm getting more money from
- 12:56Pepsi. That's who I'm going to go with.
- 12:58You can have your deal here eventually.
- 13:00Is that going to lead to the NFC East having their own television
- 13:02package? That's a conversation for down
- 13:04the road. However, Jerry Jones, when
- 13:07you're talking about the finances and what he's actually
- 13:09done for the betterment of the league, he is a guy that should
- 13:13be in there, certainly before Bob Kraft.
- 13:15Has his last a couple of decades as being the Quas?
- 13:19No, he's not the Quas. No, he's the GM has that.
- 13:22Does that diminish his chances? Kind of like Russell Wilson, who
- 13:26was going to be a Hall of Famer until, you know, he fleece the
- 13:29Broncos and then fleece the Steelers and then he fleece the
- 13:31Giants and he's looking to fleece his next team because
- 13:34this is what he does. He's an incredible salesman.
- 13:37Well, he he doesn't have a gun to these people's heads either.
- 13:39That's what I mean. He's an incredible salesman.
- 13:42He fleece his teams. He's no good, probably his agent
- 13:45bid. Well, whatever, you know, God, I
- 13:48can't stand that guy. I I can tell.
- 13:50Anyways, I was back on the floor tonight against USCI.
- 13:54Have not seen, I'm not even sure I've seen USC play, so you're
- 13:57going to have to help me out with this one.
- 13:59If I did, they'd it. I certainly don't recall it.
- 14:02I tried to go back in the memory bank this morning.
- 14:04I don't recall. I looked at their schedule.
- 14:05No, I can't remember that game. What did what did they do well?
- 14:09What? Well, what Well, I will, by the
- 14:11way, is a 9 1/2 point favorite. So is Drake.
- 14:14You and I is on the road. They're a 1 1/2 point dog.
- 14:17Hawks favored 9 1/2 over USC. Should they be?
- 14:20And what did they do well? Well, just yesterday it was the
- 14:23birthday of Chad Baker Bazaar, one of their best players.
- 14:25Who? Turned.
- 14:26Is he their leading scorer? Not turn He's he's up there.
- 14:30He turned 26. No. 26 years old, what are we
- 14:35doing here? He started at JUCO, then
- 14:38Duquesne for a year, a year at San Diego State, then two years
- 14:42at Auburn, and now this year in his I believe, 7th year of
- 14:47college basketball. He had a COVID year, if he's
- 14:48going back that. Far and the JUCO year, remember,
- 14:51didn't count this year. So here we are with a 26 year
- 14:54old out there now. He's good, really athletic and
- 14:56that's as a whole, that's what this USC team is.
- 14:59They're long, they're rugged in that fashion.
- 15:03Doesn't feel like a great match up for Iowa.
- 15:05So you're grabbing the 9 1/2? I think so, but they also stink
- 15:09offensively and if they're not knocking down shots, it can go
- 15:12the other way and it could get ugly in a hurry for them because
- 15:14they are limited. Really good defensive team.
- 15:17I would say probably the best thing about them.
- 15:19They rebound well, which I was OK, but not a even.
- 15:22I don't think a good rebounding team.
- 15:23They're fine on the rebounding end.
- 15:25That would be the path to victory for USC.
- 15:28Back down 8 to 10 threes, dominate on the boards and
- 15:32really make it difficult for Iowa to get anything going
- 15:34outside of there. They're long, they're lanky,
- 15:36they're athletic. They're going to make it very,
- 15:38very difficult. And with Baker Mazzara at 6 foot
- 15:417 guarding Sturtz, not many guys that are taller than Bennett
- 15:44Sturtz that he faces throughout the course of that one.
- 15:47I don't think it's going to be Woods that's going to be on him
- 15:48defensively. So that's what you're going to
- 15:50have. They got a 7 five guy.
- 15:52Does he play? Yeah, he plays, plays about half
- 15:55the minutes. He'll be out there 2022 minutes,
- 15:57something like that in Dines. It's just a weird match up.
- 16:01I think more than anything for Iowa.
- 16:03The other component I think is important about this game is I
- 16:07believe they just stayed here in the Midwest.
- 16:09They played Sunday, watched that game for a little bit on Peacock
- 16:13during the AFC championship game, and they I would guess
- 16:18either came right to Iowa City, right?
- 16:20Yeah, where? Where did they play?
- 16:22In Madison on Sunday Sunday, middle of the.
- 16:24Afternoon. Probably at some point, yeah.
- 16:26Probably it wouldn't make sense. Over.
- 16:27No, I'm with you. I'm with.
- 16:28You you get back, you get back Sunday night, then you're
- 16:30getting back on a plane Tuesday. I I would anticipate, though I
- 16:34haven't seen that. I wonder maybe a little bit
- 16:36weary. They lost a home to Purdue,
- 16:38tight one. Then they lost a home to
- 16:40Northwestern. Beat Wisconsin on Sunday.
- 16:42They're inconsistent. Inconsistent.
- 16:44I was the better team, no doubt, but just a weird matchup overall
- 16:48for Iowa. Yeah.
- 16:51Well, we'll see 6:00 tip Big 10 network has that one and then it
- 16:55goes into Minnesota and Wisconsin later on which should
- 16:59be that follows that is the the follow up to the Hawks who get
- 17:03the early window like that. That's awful.
- 17:05I know I got wrestling practice Little ninja so.
- 17:08You got the DVD. What do you call them?
- 17:09DV. RDVR Yeah, I have the DVR I'll
- 17:11be watching on my phone, have the earbuds in during wrestling
- 17:13practice, trying to catch as much as I can during that point.
- 17:16Big 10 schedule came out, your thoughts on we whoever had that
- 17:20yeah leak. It was all right, too.
- 17:23It was the whole thing. The whole thing.
- 17:25I didn't see that. Yeah, all nine games were all
- 17:28right there. They had it correctly and as we
- 17:30talked about, and you couldn't draw up a more difficult
- 17:32schedule for Iowa. Not to start.
- 17:34And the way that the in the fashion that it plays out in the
- 17:36first three, I want to go this way.
- 17:38So if you missed it on the road in Ann Arbor, that's Big 10 game
- 17:43number one. You come home for most people's
- 17:45number one team preseason, the Ohio State Buckeyes, and then
- 17:49you go on the road to a place that Iowa historically struggled
- 17:53on the West Coast. This time it gets a washing
- 17:54team. That's going to be good.
- 17:56Of those three games, what's the most likely win?
- 17:59Oh my God, Michigan. That's exactly what I thought
- 18:04too. That's my thought exactly.
- 18:07It's because of the bugaboo. Out in the West Coast.
- 18:09You have USC down, you have USCP and he let him back in the game
- 18:12and Caden Weechen's wearing a 10 1/2 as opposed to an 11 by.
- 18:15The way I'm glad you brought his name up.
- 18:17Apparently he's had a hell of a week.
- 18:18Yes, he is going to be drafted. I think so.
- 18:21Think the Rams would have liked to have him back there Sunday?
- 18:23Yeah, might have been a different conversation we're
- 18:26having about Super Bowl 60. You have those three games,
- 18:30Washington, the struggles on the West Coast, it looking at that
- 18:33schedule, two overall in the Big 10 that day.
- 18:35It might be a late night game and coupled with Iowa also has a
- 18:39bye the following week. Lot of times if they're going to
- 18:41put you in that late night, 9:30 central window, if you have a
- 18:45bye week, it makes it at least a little bit more palpable.
- 18:48I think that's going to be a conversation.
- 18:49Let elite slip away against USC. Let elite slip away against US
- 18:53and Michigan. I think you'd rather get them
- 18:55early. I think so too.
- 18:56Yeah, I think so too. Winning.
- 18:57Ham's a good coach Underwood. I think we're going to see more
- 19:00growth. Well, you have to, right?
- 19:01They're going to be good. But can you go in there and win
- 19:052017? I would.
- 19:07I'm not saying they're going to win.
- 19:08I'm no. You asked which is the more
- 19:10winnable of those three? Yes, it's Michigan.
- 19:12Michigan won. Washington too.
- 19:15Is it? I think so.
- 19:16I think Ohio State's really good.
- 19:17But it's a Kinnick. There's that, yeah.
- 19:21There's that now. You had two semi finalists on
- 19:23the ropes a year ago in Kinnick Stadium.
- 19:25You. Absolutely.
- 19:26Did you did? Charged up environment big dude.
- 19:32Probably, I would think. Coming down the heels of a win
- 19:34against Michigan. What else?
- 19:35What else is playing that day that would move the needle?
- 19:38Where's where's Indiana at? Nebraska.
- 19:42No. Home to Nebraska.
- 19:43What else is it? Oregon is where they UCLA.
- 19:46Penn State is where US. It's big.
- 19:48It's big. Noon.
- 19:49Kick off, you just lock that in right now, I think.
- 19:51You can. I think you can.
- 19:53I looked at Penn State's schedule just because I want to
- 19:55see for how Campbell does this. Year.
- 19:57What a joke. Really is.
- 19:58Home to Wisconsin at Northwestern and then USC at
- 20:02Michigan by home to Purdue at Washington?
- 20:05Home to Minnesota, Rutgers, Maryland.
- 20:07Jesus, Matt Campbell's going to win what, 9?
- 20:12That's it. Well I mean they should sweep to
- 20:15non con 10. Yeah.
- 20:20Is that it? What if he wins 10 games?
- 20:23He gets to the playoff. If he wins 10 game, probably
- 20:25going to get to. The playoff, we need to get in
- 20:26the playoff, yes, yeah, they're going to 10 and two, I think a
- 20:30minimum. And I open up my app.
- 20:33It's not. It's not available yet, is it?
- 20:35To make College Football Playoff already, it's not out there, but
- 20:39boy, I, I as soon as that schedule came out, that was the
- 20:42first thing that I did. Does anybody have anything a
- 20:46college football outside a national championship?
- 20:48There's the Heisman. Market is open to DraftKings.
- 20:51I saw that too, which let me just scratch my head a little
- 20:54bit. Here's another thing.
- 20:56There are three win totals already out for next season.
- 20:59Are they Big 10 or Big 12? No damn it. 2 SEC and an ACC
- 21:04regular season win totals. This is from FanDuel, Arkansas.
- 21:07Why would they put them up you? That's exactly my gamble.
- 21:10In Arkansas, you can't. That's what I thought.
- 21:14New coaching staff 4 1/2 OK, all right, I know nothing.
- 21:17OK, LSU, little bit more in. OK, Yeah. 9 1/2.
- 21:21Well, there's the lane factor. Absolutely.
- 21:23And the other Speaking of Penn State, their former coach James
- 21:26Franklin and Virginia Tech. Now this makes no sense to me
- 21:28whatsoever. Do the owners of that company,
- 21:31is that where they went to school or anything like that?
- 21:33The board of directors. Possibly 7 1/2 the number, by
- 21:36the way, for the Hokies in that one.
- 21:38Well, we should get those relatively soon I would think.
- 21:41Nebraska what do they get other other than the non con They
- 21:45start at Michigan State, then they host Maryland host Indiana
- 21:48at Oregon by host Washington at Illinois at Ruskers Rutgers.
- 21:54Their final home game will be at the They'll host the Buckeyes on
- 21:57Senior Day before they come. Over.
- 21:58They're going for an 8. And Matt rules going.
- 22:01Where into retirement he'll get one more year.
- 22:05You think one more year? Well they just gave him the huge
- 22:07ext 2 months ago. They did, right?
- 22:09Yeah, I forgot about that. Yeah.
- 22:10But if it goes poorly by the time Black Friday of 2027 comes
- 22:14around? That'll be that'll be the the
- 22:18swan. Sun.
- 22:18I don't even know if it'll be the Swan Sun.
- 22:20So, so you've got them. So they let's say this week, the
- 22:23big the non. Con What's the non con?
- 22:26I can't. I can't see.
- 22:27OK, It's Ohio Bowling Green, and that looks like North Texas.
- 22:33I see a loss in there. Maybe two and one.
- 22:36Michigan State. Stop me when you when you hear
- 22:39they'll beat Michigan State, will they?
- 22:40Yeah, I think so. Well, that's on the road.
- 22:42Yeah. OK.
- 22:44Let's say they're three and one at this point.
- 22:45OK, 3:00 and 1:00 and then Maryland. 4:00 and 1:00.
- 22:50Indiana. Four and two, Oregon, 4:00 and
- 22:533:00. Washington at home?
- 22:55No. Yes.
- 22:56At home. Yep.
- 22:57Let's give it to him 5. At Illinois, loss at Rutgers. 6.
- 23:05Ohio State, Iowa. Six and six best case scenario.
- 23:08I could see it. All right, we'll take your time.
- 23:09I'll come back and talk to Matt Poston's Big 12 College hoops.

- 24:45David Kaplan kicks off our number 2.
- 24:47Tommy Birch follows suit right now.
- 24:48Matt Postons, Heartland College Sports, he joins us as we talk
- 24:52Big 12 basketball. Matt Trenton Ken, as always, we
- 24:55sure appreciate what you do for us.
- 24:57Third during football and into the basketball season.
- 25:00I got a tough one for you right off the bat.
- 25:03Now you have to vote today. Matt Postons, who's the Player
- 25:05of the year in the Big 12. A lot of really good candidates,
- 25:10but I think I'd have to lean toward JC top and at this point
- 25:13from Texas Tech. I mean the the the last two
- 25:16weeks he has been at another level where 25 and 10 looks like
- 25:21average for him. I mean he has just done some
- 25:24incredible things offensively. And when I was in Lubbock for
- 25:28their game with BYU 2 weekends ago, to hear Grant Mccaslin talk
- 25:32about how JT Toppen is not only, you know, leveled up his
- 25:37defense, which you can see on the floor, but also challenging
- 25:40his teammates to be better on the defensive end.
- 25:42And it's beginning to work as they played over the last couple
- 25:45of weeks. I think it all just puts
- 25:46together, you know, a guy who's having a season where he could
- 25:50end up averaging a double, double for the year.
- 25:53And just his leadership, the way he's played, the way he's, you
- 25:56know, lifted Texas Tech up the last couple of weeks.
- 25:59Right now, he would probably get my vote, but it's not easy.
- 26:02I mean, there's so much talent in this conference this year.
- 26:05I mean, Joshua Jefferson makes a good case.
- 26:08Jayden Bradley at Arizona makes a good case.
- 26:11You could make a case for Darren Peterson, even though he has
- 26:14only played roughly 10 games. He's had an incredible year.
- 26:17The league is loaded. Yeah, the league is loaded.
- 26:23And there are going to be some guys that in some leagues would
- 26:25probably be second team all conference that are going to be
- 26:27all real mentioned this year. Think about that.
- 26:30You're right though. Well, and I want to kind of go
- 26:31that direction with you Matt. As we look at Arizona and they
- 26:34win the regular season crown, you got to put somebody you
- 26:36would feel as a first team all conference guy.
- 26:40But but who is it? Is it Bradley, is it Buries?
- 26:43Is it Pete if he kind of re emerges like he did back early
- 26:46in the season? I mean, they have so many
- 26:47different guys that can beat you if you could only choose one.
- 26:50Or maybe, maybe a better way of phrasing it, who is the MVP of
- 26:54this Arizona team? Todd.
- 26:56Well, the, the great thing about their team is that they're so
- 26:59versatile and so diverse. They've got 9 different guys
- 27:01that can beat you. You know, one night one guy
- 27:03doesn't have it, another guy steps up.
- 27:05He saw that against the BYU Philip, he did not have a really
- 27:09good game, but Burris and and Bradley did.
- 27:12I think I've leaned toward Bradley at this point just
- 27:15because he's been so consistent throughout the year.
- 27:17He doesn't have to score a ton of points to be important to
- 27:20what you're trying to do on the floor.
- 27:22And you know, just his leadership throughout the year
- 27:25has just been astounding. But, but Burris, you know what,
- 27:28he's really come on the past 2-3 weeks, he's had that kind of
- 27:32trajectory that you would expect from a freshman, a guy who
- 27:35needed ten games to get used to the pace of the college game.
- 27:38And now he's 20 games in and you can see he's very comfortable
- 27:42with with the game. He's very comfortable with how
- 27:45they use them. He's now levelled up to being
- 27:48able to handle Big 12 defense and dish it out, too.
- 27:50So the great thing about that team is that Tommy Lloyd's got a
- 27:53great mix of veterans, young guys and freshmen, and all of
- 27:57them have bought into doing the same thing, which if you're
- 27:59going to win a championship, that's the kind of team you have
- 28:01to have. No, no question about it.
- 28:03Well, let's take this one step forward then.
- 28:06Newcomer of the year. I mean, the Bansa and Yesafu.
- 28:09It's just, there's just so many, Pete, there's so many incredible
- 28:13freshmen in this conference. Peterson I He might be.
- 28:16That might be the answer. Who's the freshman of the year
- 28:19when it's said and done? Yeah.
- 28:21I mean, that's the good. That's an interesting question
- 28:23because there's a newcomer of the year and as a freshman of
- 28:25the year, the newcomer of the year typically ends up being
- 28:28like transfer, a college age transfer who isn't the
- 28:31conference for the first year. If you're talking freshman of
- 28:35the year, I'm probably leaning toward the monster at this point
- 28:40just because he's played the whole year.
- 28:42He's played at a high level the whole year.
- 28:44He's had a couple of little hiccups here and there, which we
- 28:46you would expect from a freshman.
- 28:47But the nice thing about him is when he has a hiccup, he answers
- 28:51the next game. You know, we had 13 against
- 28:53Tech. The next game he blew up for 43
- 28:55against Utah. You know, he had a, he had a
- 28:58solid game against Arizona the other night, 24 points.
- 29:03You know, I suspect you'll have a big game the next game.
- 29:05So the great thing about him offensively is he answers the
- 29:07bell every time he's needed. Now, he needs a lot of work on
- 29:11the defensive end. A lot of these freshmen do.
- 29:13But, you know, you're asking him to score points.
- 29:15You're asking him to take clutch shots for you.
- 29:17And he's been doing that for BYU most of the year.
- 29:20Want to go to Houston. Lost last time out against Texas
- 29:23Tech on the road, had a lead in that game, gave up a big run and
- 29:26certainly had an opportunity. Mentioned Fleming's who just
- 29:29continues to emerge out of this group.
- 29:31We see Houston, obviously what Kelvin Sampson has done here
- 29:34historically since he's taken over the program, played for a
- 29:37national championship a year ago.
- 29:39It feels like there's more upside with Houston.
- 29:41Can they win a national championship?
- 29:44Yeah, I think so. There are five teams in this
- 29:46conference that can win a national championship
- 29:48legitimately, and Houston's one of them.
- 29:50The reason they can is number one, they still play defense at
- 29:52such a high level. It doesn't matter who's on the
- 29:55floor. They're going to get after you
- 29:57in a way that you know few other teams in this conference can do.
- 30:00Offensively, obviously, Fleming's had a huge game the
- 30:03other night against Texas Tech, really put that team on their
- 30:05back. But the other freshmen are
- 30:07starting to get their legs under them offensively.
- 30:10Cenac is starting to contribute more on that end of the floor.
- 30:14Sharp is kind of bounced back from the slump he had in early
- 30:17January. Same with who is on.
- 30:19So they've got everything they need, honestly.
- 30:21And Tuggler gives them just so many little things that nobody
- 30:24else can do that, you know, as long as he's on the floor,
- 30:26they're they're set from a defensive standpoint at the rim.
- 30:29So they've got everything they need.
- 30:31And as these freshmen get better over the course of the next six
- 30:34weeks, that's what's going to make them so dangerous in March.
- 30:36Because once you get into March, you know, if your guys have
- 30:39developed the way you hope they develop, they're not freshmen
- 30:41anymore. They're playing like sophomores
- 30:43and juniors. And that's where I expect
- 30:44Flemings and Cenac and these other freshmen to be when they
- 30:47get into March. You know, maybe unfair when we
- 30:49when we look at Pete because he he breaks in against the
- 30:52defending national champs. Florida had 30.
- 30:56So if you didn't know his name, if you watched, you know, Sports
- 30:59Center, whatever, very quickly you knew who this kid was and
- 31:01that Arizona's got an incredible talent.
- 31:04But as of late, what's going on here, do you think?
- 31:06Was it just an anomaly? The game bents BYU because he
- 31:10did not play very well on the road at Central Florida.
- 31:13I don't want to say a freshman wall, but is there something
- 31:15wrong with Pete? Do you think?
- 31:17Is there an injury maybe that they're not being forthcoming
- 31:19on? No, I mean, you have to be
- 31:22forthcoming with the injury report now because publish it
- 31:25every day. You're supposed to be.
- 31:27I don't see anybody who's, I don't see a guy who's injured by
- 31:30an injury or anything like that. I think he is just going through
- 31:32that inevitable valley that every freshman goes through,
- 31:36especially those freshmen that come out and just like, like you
- 31:39said, kill it that first, you know, first 5-10 games of the
- 31:42year, which he did. And now he's, you know, he's
- 31:44getting a lot of defensive attention from other teams
- 31:47because they've seen him on film, which is inevitably
- 31:50opening up spots for Burris and other players to help them.
- 31:53I think that will all balance out come February and March
- 31:57because Arizona's got a murderous schedule in February
- 32:00going into the Big 12 tournament.
- 32:02You have guys like Burris and Bradley and a Walker who are,
- 32:06you know, siphoning off attention from defenders.
- 32:10He's going to start getting a lot more, a lot more one-on-one
- 32:12attention in February, and I think his scoring will start
- 32:15going up at that point. But I don't see a guy who's
- 32:17injured. I just see a guy who's, you
- 32:18know, like you said, kind of hitting a freshman wall.
- 32:21Everybody hits it at some point. You'd rather hit it now than hit
- 32:25it in March. Yeah, I'll say good point.
- 32:27We've seen teams certainly do that in the rugged nature of the
- 32:30Big 12 back to 18 games though, and I think the coaches are
- 32:33going to be happy about that because saw a lot of tired teams
- 32:36here towards the end of the season last couple of years.
- 32:38One of those teams was I was stayed a year ago, look tired at
- 32:40different times when we got into February was the downturn what
- 32:44we saw blowout loss against Kansas, The hell that they took
- 32:47in Cincinnati, was that it or they turned around, did what
- 32:50they supposed to beat UCF, throttle them, beat up Oklahoma
- 32:53State. They got two more very winnable
- 32:55games in front of them, really three before they go to TCU.
- 32:58Just your overall view on the Cyclone team?
- 33:02I think they're in good shape. I think the one thing they've
- 33:04got to correct is the same thing we talked about a couple of
- 33:07weeks ago. They they seem to have trouble
- 33:08getting off to a good start in games consistently.
- 33:12You they they seem to have had this pattern of putting
- 33:15themselves in a bit of a hole in the first half and they have to,
- 33:18you know, build out of that. That's something they've got to
- 33:20get away from. I think they did a better job of
- 33:22that last week. I think, you know, that's
- 33:24something they can build on this week.
- 33:25But I mean, in terms of personnel, they've got
- 33:28everything they did. They're a great defensive team.
- 33:30They've got a big three offensively.
- 33:32They're starting to get guys like Turay and other players to
- 33:35really contribute more offensively on that side of the
- 33:37ball. I feel like they're one of those
- 33:40five teams that are legitimate contenders to get to the Final
- 33:42Four and be, you know, in the conversation for a national
- 33:44championship. I think they're getting a little
- 33:46less chatter now because of those two games.
- 33:49I think maybe people look at them and say, well, you know,
- 33:52maybe they're maybe they're not what we think they are.
- 33:55I think they are what we think they are.
- 33:57I think they just hit that inevitable part of their
- 33:59schedule where, you know, they go to Kansas, the place where
- 34:02they've had tough times winning games and got blown out.
- 34:06Then they had a hangover from that against Cincinnati, and
- 34:09this is an opportunity for them to get right, turn it around.
- 34:12I'm looking forward to their rank games in February because I
- 34:15don't think they're going to have another game like that like
- 34:17they had against Kansas. Anxious to bring up the piece
- 34:20that you wrote. I think it's today at Heartland
- 34:22College Sports on the Big 12 Network that apparently has been
- 34:27floated out there and was floated out by your market, Big
- 34:3012 Media Days, which you attended.
- 34:32And obviously, as you pointed out in your column, the driver
- 34:35would be at least at this point. I mean, the men are great, but
- 34:37the women people are turning in. I mean, Iowa State is the most
- 34:41watched women's basketball program.
- 34:42I think I was second Baylor's on that list.
- 34:45Oklahoma State brings a lot of eyeballs.
- 34:47Is there is is this something that is a realistic possibility
- 34:51of of happening? How much I guess emphasis is
- 34:54your mark putting on that? Is he really trying to get this
- 34:57done? I, I don't know if he's
- 35:00necessarily trying to get it done.
- 35:02I talked to a couple of athletic directors that Big 12 media days
- 35:06and, you know, kind of asked them the question, would a Big
- 35:0812 network help the conference? And both of them said the same
- 35:11thing. You know, if, if, if we were to
- 35:13take a look at it and they were to help our league in some way
- 35:16in terms of exposure, in terms of getting more attention for,
- 35:19for our Olympic sports and things like that, it would be
- 35:21something to consider. But I don't think it's on their
- 35:24drawing board. The the real point of that
- 35:27column, and I hope, I hope this didn't get lost, was really, you
- 35:30know, women's basketball is better in this conference than
- 35:33it was, you know, 3-4 years ago. And they've got 20 games on
- 35:36national television when it comes to conference play, 27
- 35:40overall. Three of the top ten teams in
- 35:42terms of ratings for women's basketball are Iowa State,
- 35:45Baylor and Oklahoma State. And I would imagine TCU will
- 35:48join them after their two national games this week.
- 35:50This is an opportunity for your mark to leverage the viewership
- 35:55and get more opportunities for his women's teams on national TV
- 35:59on linear channels. Some of that could be on a
- 36:02conference network because they feel that's the way they want to
- 36:04go. But I think it's more likely
- 36:06that he could apply the strategy they've used for the men, which
- 36:08is the sub license strategy with CBS and NBC and TNT and and
- 36:14leverage the sub license opportunity to get more of those
- 36:16women's games on a linear channel.
- 36:19I think that right now in the short term that's their better
- 36:22Ave. to to get more attention for those teams.
- 36:26Long term, I guess the network could be an opportunity.
- 36:30I think the the bottom line is how much do the SECACC and Big
- 36:3510 networks help help their conferences?
- 36:40I don't know if they're helping them necessarily from a
- 36:42subscription standpoint or a rating standpoint because those
- 36:44that top ten list I just mentioned doesn't include their
- 36:47networks. So it doesn't include ratings
- 36:49from ACC Network, Big 10 Network or SEC Network.
- 36:52So it's just linear channels that are non conference
- 36:56specific. So it's an interesting question.
- 36:58I don't think it's on the front burner on their drawing board.
- 37:01I think it's one of those things where if they sat down and said,
- 37:04you know what, the math works, let's give it a shot, they might
- 37:07go for it. But remember, you have to have
- 37:10your third party or your third tier sports rights to do that.
- 37:14ESPN has those rights. All that stuff is on ESPN.
- 37:18Plus, they'd have to talk ESPN into doing a network if they
- 37:21wanted to before the TV contract ends in 203031.
- 37:25Interesting. Last 30 seconds, Matt, a little
- 37:27football question for you. The Big 12 championship game
- 37:30moving to Friday night. You like the move?
- 37:33I do like the move. I think it gives them a nice
- 37:35spotlight. It gives them an opportunity to
- 37:39really kind of showcase the league in prime time.
- 37:42I don't think they'll have anything opposite it.
- 37:45There's no there's no baseball, there's no NFL.
- 37:48There might be a smattering of college basketball, but it's not
- 37:50going to be anything really big. The only question I have really
- 37:54is making sure that fans can get there on a Friday night, that
- 37:58that's the only real question in my mind because that makes it a
- 38:01long weekend as opposed to a trip Saturday and Sunday.
- 38:04But the crowds have been very good for this conference
- 38:07championship game the past few years and I wouldn't expect that
- 38:09to be any different with a Friday night game.

- 38:55team on the road will do that. You know, we talked about Taylor
- 38:58McCabe tearing your ACL yesterday.
- 38:59I did not know the other angles of this story, the other layer
- 39:02of this. Story her sister, her.
- 39:04Sister Trent this is crazy within two hours and is Peyton
- 39:09her sister? Taylor's sister is Peyton.
- 39:11McCabe plays a Drake and Taylor McCabe gets hurt and then two
- 39:15hours later and is Peyton out for the years.
- 39:19It's a younger sister. I think I saw and I'm not
- 39:21positive. Dislocated ankle.
- 39:23She was. They had to carry her off the
- 39:25floor. That's a scary injury.
- 39:27Oh my God, no, we think about that.
- 39:29Fluke Yes. And I don't know, the parents.
- 39:32Do they split? You know, do they pick and
- 39:34choose? Does one go here, 1 go there?
- 39:37Were they both in the stands? Can you imagine one of them in
- 39:40Iowa City sends a text? Yes, Taylor told her ACL.
- 39:43Then you get a text from the other one.
- 39:45You're not going to believe this.
- 39:46And Peyton had an ankle injury just.
- 39:49That's bananas. So sad.
- 39:51The the mean the odds of this happening right to one family
- 39:55within two hours a you get 2 Division One basketball players.
- 39:58Right. Yes.
- 39:59To begin with. And then they're both playing
- 40:01and oh yo-yo, yo-yo. By the way, the Cyclone women
- 40:05tonight against Texas Tech on the road, 6 1/2 point underdogs
- 40:09in that. Getting 6 1/2 How's your women's
- 40:12basketball betting going for you?
- 40:14It's been a strength, one of the few strain.
- 40:16What are the few? OK, few are far between.
- 40:19Is anybody going to beat UConn? So I feel pretty good about that
- 40:23free square that we've I've been including on all my futures.
- 40:26I mean who If not UConn, who, Texas.
- 40:28I like Texas, yeah. I think they have the
- 40:30athleticism. South Carolina, maybe?
- 40:36Didn't they just get beat by something they did?
- 40:37Yeah. This weekend, upset.
- 40:39You know Vanderbilt's off to a nun.
- 40:41How about Vanderbilt, just in sports?
- 40:42Yeah, really. What a turn around.
- 40:44And you talk about by. The way Pavius 59 and three
- 40:47quarters, yes. So the six that they were
- 40:51harping, No, he's 6 foot, he's legit.
- 40:53No, he's not. He is not.
- 40:55When you actually measure him, yes, by people that don't work
- 40:58for Vanderbilt. Just like Jeremy Hecklinski.
- 41:00It's not 511. Yeah, it's not.
- 41:03Might be my height. He's going to have to be playing
- 41:05like he's 64 against that first three games of the Big Ten.
- 41:09My God. Vanderbilt's investment, though,
- 41:12we're waiting. You know, who are the programs
- 41:13could step up in this new era in a great city, a growing city in
- 41:17Nashville, a great academics to go along with it.
- 41:19It's Vanderbilt of power in everything.
- 41:22Starting to proof is in the pudding, right?
