- 0:13Five minutes after the hour. It is show four thousand, nine hundred and
- 0:18fifty three of The Morning Show with Preston's gack of morning. I'm Preston.
- 0:22That's Grant Allen over there in Studio one. Ay. I am here in
- 0:24Studio one B, and I am joined by co founder, co host of
- 0:29All Things Talent. He is Charlie Strickland. Hello, good morning. How
- 0:33are you. I'm pretty dull, going good. You've been given great thought
- 0:38to the significance of the passage of time. Yes, it's been a lot
- 0:42of a lot of time on it, significant amount of tom considering that significant
- 0:48significance. Yes, as at your time, what did you have any revelatory
- 0:52thoughts? The vice president's an idiot along with the president, by the way,
- 1:02And it's okay to say that now because I considering all the things that
- 1:06have been said about presidents and vice presidents on both sides throughout the passage of
- 1:11time, they're pretty significant and therefore, and it's okay because the left did
- 1:15it, the right can do it. And I don't think I think even
- 1:18the people on the left understanding the presidents. I think he was an idiot
- 1:23all along, and then he got old. Now he's an old idiot,
- 1:27you know. Anyway, he always confirmed it. Yeah, he and I
- 1:33think a lot of the problems in the world today right now that are currently
- 1:36going on, or because he's our president and because people, I mean it's
- 1:40sharks smell blood in the water, and that's where our country is going.
- 1:42And and certain people in our society are perfectly content with that. They're okay
- 1:48with that. They're okay with a downfall of Rome, They're they're okay with
- 1:51our society just completely collapsing because of all the terrible things, you know,
- 1:56whatever. Tell me that they're not coming to my house. Yeah, that's
- 2:00the thing. I mean, we twos as much of an extent as we
- 2:02can. We are seemingly placing a form of a barricade in Florida and sort
- 2:09of walling ourselves off to a certain extent. That said, it leads perfectly
- 2:15to just a few days from now, in fact, July first things change
- 2:21with regard to gun ownership in Florida. Right, it gets closer to where
- 2:25we should be. Anyway, I mean, you know, this is not
- 2:29constitutional carry going into effect July one. It is permitless carry. It is
- 2:34not constitutional carry. You still can't carry openly anywhere. You know most states
- 2:40very much. Most states have some sort of open carry on the hooks.
- 2:45Florida is one of only a handful of states in the nation that don't have
- 2:49open carry. We have a quasi open carry. If you're coming or going
- 2:54to a gun range, if you're hunting, camping, or fishing, you
- 3:00can open carry. That was the sort of a carry over. I think
- 3:02that was to satisfy some people back in the eighties when they want to conceal
- 3:07carry, to leave something on the books. It's kind of ridiculous because it's
- 3:13hard to determine when you're actually coming or going. But that said, when
- 3:17we go to permit less carry on July one, if you are qualified under
- 3:23the law to obtain a concealed carry permit, then you are also qualified and
- 3:30authorized to carry concealed without a permit under the same sets of rules. But
- 3:37if you're disqualified from carrying under the old statute, then you're disqualified from carrying
- 3:44without a permit, which means you better be right when you say, oh,
- 3:50I'm okay to carry. I could get a permit if I wanted to.
- 3:53Well, can you do you understand all of the restrictions, the dozens
- 3:58of restrictions that keep you from getting it concealed carry permit without running. You
- 4:02can't run. You can't run your own background check. And see, I
- 4:06mean you should know, I mean you really should know. Do you have
- 4:10a domestic violence junction against you? Have you ever been a convicted or nonprocessor
- 4:15judication will withheld not non process but the edudication withheld on a domestic violence charge.
- 4:20Have you had two DUIs in the past three years or did you?
- 4:26And I don't know if it was two DUIs in three years or in the
- 4:30past three years or what did I don't even know. The Department of Agriculture
- 4:33does. But there's a series of questions that you're going to have to answer
- 4:36honestly well and not only accurate and to yourself. There's not a form because
- 4:43because you're qualified to buy a gun doesn't mean that you're qualified to get and
- 4:46concealed carry permit in Florida. There's a different set of restrictions And the only
- 4:50way to know for sure is to go apply for a concealed carry permit and
- 4:54see if they give you one. All right, So, and then there's
- 4:58actually you think, well, I can do anything without a permit that I
- 5:01can with a permit, but there's there's an exception that I did find it
- 5:06gets complicated these these things. To honestly just go get a permit. It's
- 5:10like less than a hundred bucks for seven years. You know, I don't
- 5:14know what the big deal is it. I believe in the law. There's
- 5:18a great idea, it's a great move, it's a step in the right
- 5:21direction, but there's still some questions issues we didn't talk about. Eleven minutes
- 5:30almost twelve minutes now past the hour here on the Morning Show Wednesday personal Defense
- 5:32segment. Charlie Strickland of the Talent Training Group with us in July first is
- 5:36when the new law goes into effect that allows for permits carry, and we're
- 5:43just talking about the wisdom of permitless carry of finding out whether you are eligible
- 5:48to be carrying permit lists or not. Well, I mean you can go
- 5:55to Department of a Culture and the website and read up on it there,
- 5:59because you do need to read their website to find out one what the reciprocal
- 6:04states are would be if you were carrying with the permit, but understand that
- 6:10that doesn't count if you don't have a permit Alabama and Georgia constitutional carry.
- 6:15You can go to Alabama or Georgia as long as you're a law abiding citizen
- 6:18and eligible to carry in their state per their laws. They'll recognize that.
- 6:24What they will certainly recognize as your concealed carry permit in Florida because the reciprocal
- 6:28states, the reciprocity applies there, and we recognize theirs, and now we
- 6:34recognize their authority to carry without a permit in Florida starting July one, the
- 6:40Georgia resident, Alabama resident, or any resident of the United States any I
- 6:44think it says any citizen or permanent residing alien, for whatever they are,
- 6:55you can carry in the state of Florida as long as you fit the laws.
- 7:00Love understanding all of that, but I think that you know it's meant
- 7:04to err on the side of the personal personal liberties and rights. But you're
- 7:09also assuming that every law enforcement officer has your best interest in mind, and
- 7:14nobody is looking to nail you for something minor or use something like that against
- 7:19you to further search you or do things. You know. I've been a
- 7:25cop for a long time and I can tell you that there are times and
- 7:30places when you use pretextual stops like a tail light out or a tag light
- 7:35out or something that you can stop someone for an issue, a citation for
- 7:40as a means to go further carrying a gun. You know you have to
- 7:44under the new law, you're going to have to have your driver's license or
- 7:47a government issued ID on you to determine who you are, and you'll have
- 7:51to present that to somebody asked for it. But I heard I heard Fred
- 7:56Conrad on Talent Outdoors with You and JD discs us that in his opinion,
- 8:01there are some ambiguities in the law that are gonna have to be settled and
- 8:07likely won't be settled until there's a court case. You're gonna end up somebody's
- 8:09gonna end up being a test case. What I'm telling you is to err
- 8:13on the side of caution. They say you have to have you have to
- 8:18have a driver's license, okay, And they can't law enforce. They can't
- 8:22just stop you and go, hey, are you carrying a gun for no
- 8:24reason? Terryville, Ohio tear what we call a Terry stop. They have
- 8:28to believe, have to have a reasonable belief or a reasonable suspicion that a
- 8:33crime is occurring or is about to occur, in order to for an law
- 8:37enforcement to detain you, and then they can pat you down to look for
- 8:41weapons if they think that you're about to commit a crime or a crime was
- 8:45just committed. And that's based on a totality of circumstances, time, place,
- 8:50you know, your actions, things like that. They have to be
- 8:52able to justify them. Now that's not proof that you're doing anything, it's
- 8:54just a reasonable it's like fifty fifty more man more likely than that person's doing
- 9:01something based on the time of day, their actions and things like that,
- 9:03or a description suspect description, um. And then they find But they can't
- 9:09just stop you, and even they can't stop you on the side of the
- 9:13road and say do you have a driver's license? Is it valid? Do
- 9:16you have to have done something? Or it has to be part of an
- 9:20operational with an operational plan like the UI roadblock, you know, sobriety checks
- 9:24things like that. Um. Same thing with guns. They're gonna, you
- 9:26know, law enforcement to stop you, detain you. They have to know
- 9:31that. But that's some jerk next to you sitting on the church view going
- 9:35I don't want to. I don't want guns in my church. And he's
- 9:37carrying a gun and I don't think he has a permit, and blah blah
- 9:41blah. Then law enforcement has to make the reasonable move to and make inquiries.
- 9:46But can they detain you? But it depends anyway. It's gonna be
- 9:54fun to watch this unfold or maybe not. It is. And actually,
- 9:56there's there's some places that you can't carry without a permit, or at least
- 10:01one place I can think of that you could carry with a permit. You
- 10:03can't carry without a permit, and that's churches with the school on a property
- 10:07because they didn't ammend that law from twenty to twenty one. The church carry
- 10:09a law to say that you can carry at churches with a school or without
- 10:15a permit. It just still says with a permit. So you boy,
- 10:24and we're back Charlie Strickling with us from the Talent Training Group and Talent Outdoors.
- 10:30Of course, a couple of weeks ago on Talent out Doors, you
- 10:33guys were talking about red dots. We were all these people that are going
- 10:39to be picking up pistols over the next weeks and months are going to be
- 10:45confronted with that decision on whether they take a firearm that has one or doesn't
- 10:50have one. What kind of consideration should go into that? How much moneys
- 10:54in your pocket? Does it really boil down to that? Oh? Yeah,
- 10:58Ultimately you're buying okay, So let's say you're buying a glock retail by
- 11:03fifty. You know, let's give or take depending on whether you're going with
- 11:07a small I want to be. So let's let's just say you're buying a
- 11:11five hundred dollars pistol. Okay, to get an RMR cut or the pistol
- 11:16with the ability to mount a site to it without having to mill the slides,
- 11:20which you and just just inside baseball, you went inside baseball on me.
- 11:24A bunch of people have no idea what you mean by what a what?
- 11:28Yeah, well, we call it an RM market. There's a lot
- 11:30of different names for it. It's it's cut from an optic on the pistol
- 11:35itself. So okay, right in front of the rear sight on the top
- 11:39of the slide. The ones that are built for aftermarket sites have a plate.
- 11:43Generally it will be about four screws. You take the plate off and
- 11:46then you mount a site to that, either with an adapter or directly to
- 11:50the slide um. If you can, you want to mount it directly to
- 11:54the side, you just have to have the correct site to do that.
- 11:56There's a half a dozen dozen ways to make that happen. You can't just
- 12:00put one on any pistol now, so it's an extra probably one hundred bucks
- 12:05in a seventy five to one hundred dollars for one that's already pre cut.
- 12:09So now you've increased the cost of your pistol. And if you're buying a
- 12:11new pistol today, if you have the choice between one that's has the cut
- 12:16on, it has the plate there so you can add versus one that doesn't
- 12:20get the one that will take it because you may need to do it later.
- 12:22Even if you're young. Your eyes go and it's much easier to shoot
- 12:26with a laser holographic site than it is without one. A lot of people
- 12:31over years, you know, the big thing used to be a red laser,
- 12:35and it went to ground lasers so you could actually see the dots superimposed
- 12:39on the target. The batteries don't last very long on those, I mean,
- 12:43they're okay. There's several hundred dollars for those lasers, the good ones,
- 12:48and for several hundred dollars you can get one that mounts to the guns
- 12:54when it has a lot of them will have a shake awake fixture so that
- 12:56it turns itself off until it's moved or bump and then it comes on automatically.
- 13:01You don't have to reach down and push it. You don't have to
- 13:03worry about pushing a button like you do with an external laser. The only
- 13:07problem with those is that if you just walk around, if you move at
- 13:11all, it just stays on them. But I mean there's like twenty thousand
- 13:13hours or use on the batteries. I mean there's some solar powered Have you
- 13:18had one, god yet, Yes, I have, really I have.
- 13:20In fact, I've got a HOLLI sin that that has been a problem for
- 13:24me. That really Yeah, it's been a surprising development. But in theory,
- 13:30I know you're right. I try to go with the ones that you
- 13:33know. There are solar powered versions of them that are supplemental and stuff like,
- 13:37and you're gonna have problems with every brand's gonna have any technology has to
- 13:41be honest. I'm pretty sure they're made in China. But would you recommend
- 13:46a red dot to a new pistol owner. I think I know where you'll
- 13:50go on this because I heard your conversation. I do if if you want
- 13:54to spend the money and you're gonna teach yourself, you're gonna learn to shoot.
- 13:58Um I okay. As an experience shooter, I had a hard time
- 14:03with it. I'm moving to it now because they've come out with some new
- 14:05models and that now the dot cowitnesses with the regular sites, which means which
- 14:13means when I line up my regular sits on my glock, the red dot
- 14:18is dead square on top of the front sight. So I'm not having to
- 14:20with the ones that I've traditionally had when I would push out. And when
- 14:24you've got tens of thousands and tens of thousands of rounds through a particular model
- 14:30of pistol, you're used to pushing out, and there's the sites you've built
- 14:33that muscle memory, neural pathways or programmed. I know exactly when you're looking
- 14:37at the front site right, and then when I add a site on top
- 14:39of that, there's a parallax issues. The boar height for the site is
- 14:43higher than that for the standard site, and when I push out, I'm
- 14:46I'm looking at the bottom of the holographic site, not and I don't have
- 14:50time to make that correction, and I have to tilt my head back and
- 14:54find the site. I hadn't been able to do it traditionally, but they've
- 14:56come out with new sites now that sit lower, and so they co witness
- 15:01the same thing with like holographic sites. On right aar fifteens. When you
- 15:05see the steel sites through the site, the red dot sits on top of
- 15:09the front sight post. That's co witnessing, and you can tell if one's
- 15:13off, because then they don't line up right because they should line up perfectly.
- 15:16I'm gonna ask the stupid question, and we got time in case my
- 15:20stupid question leads to a real long answer. What's the point of a red
- 15:24dot? Then? If it's just if it's what's the advantage if it's co
- 15:28witnessing what the steel site's already telling you, or I can only focus on
- 15:31the target, the front sight or the rear sight. Okay, I can
- 15:35only focus on one thing. We teach you to shoot quickly, to focus
- 15:37on the front site. That's the way to shoot. Accurately and shoot fast.
- 15:41However, when somebody's charging you with a knife for shooting back at you,
- 15:45you're looking at the target. There's no way physiologically you're going to be
- 15:48looking at the front sight unless you've really, really, really really really got
- 15:52your stuff together, and that's difficult. With a red dot site, you
- 15:56can focus on the target, keep both eyes open and see the sight on
- 16:00the target. It's almost foolproof, but that doesn't really exist. Charlie Strickland
- 16:07with me from the Talent Training Group Morning Show with Preston Scott talking to Well,
- 16:11we've talked about the July first switch over to permitless Kerry. We then
- 16:17transitioned into red dots and for those that are going to go that route and
- 16:22whether they're in that permitless group or just someone that's thinking about buying that gun
- 16:26and going to a red dot, what are some things to think about with
- 16:30regard to training with one, how it's training different. Um, you know,
- 16:37if you're starting out, it's not really it's pretty much because it's all
- 16:40you know, Yeah, I mean, it's it's you're you're drawing from the
- 16:42holster, bringing hands together, pushing out look, you know, indexing and
- 16:48you know, it's almost like pointing your finger after a while, how do
- 16:52you make sure because okay, we're talking to let's just talk to the novice
- 16:56person out there. They're getting a firearm, they've never had a red dot.
- 17:00How do they ensure that that red dot is aimed properly by well,
- 17:07if it cowitnesses, you can tell if it's You can look through the line
- 17:11of sights up see if the red dot is on top of the front sight.
- 17:15But you know a lot of them don't. You can boar sight a
- 17:18pistol or a rifle shop. Most shops, most gun stores will have a
- 17:23laser boarsighter you can put in the barrel. It pushes a red dot down
- 17:30on the wall so many feet away, and then you look at the site
- 17:33you make the adjustments. Most of them are dead on when you put them
- 17:37on the gun. I mean, okay, they're but not all obviously.
- 17:41And so I when I used to run the armory at the Sheriff's office,
- 17:44we would put EO Techs on our rifles, and you know, we would
- 17:49sit in the steel sites so that we have there are backup sites, and
- 17:55then we would fold the back when out of the way. I mean we
- 17:56would leave it up and then look through there, set it on some base
- 18:00and we would dial into EO tech. Look where the red dot was on
- 18:02top of the front sight, and it was almost always dead on. You
- 18:06have to tweak it just a little bit. With a rifle is much more
- 18:08precise at distance. With a pistol, you could you can laser boar sight
- 18:12one. Um. Typically the best thing to do is just to take it
- 18:15to the range and sitting down at one of the benches and set it on
- 18:19something, you know, fairly stationary. Sand bags. If you don't have
- 18:23sand bags, just get an old pair of thick socks and fill it up
- 18:26with sand and tie a knot in it, and that's a sand bag.
- 18:29I mean, that's that's why I've been used for years until I converted all
- 18:33my Levi's pants into sandbags because the Levis was donating money to anti gun causes.
- 18:37There you go, and so I converted all my levies to gun related
- 18:41stuff. Yeah, yeah, you gotta, you know, you gotta get
- 18:42your jabs in where you can and and so, uh get some get on
- 18:48something stationary and shoot at you know, seven yards or so, and see
- 18:55if where you're aiming is and don't don't chase your groups, don't keep aiming
- 19:00at the last bullet hole, pick a spot on the target, pull the
- 19:03trigger slowly and see where the see where the rounds are going, or have
- 19:08somebody to do it. That's you know, really good at shooting. And
- 19:11that's really that's something that I've learned over the years, Charlie. It is
- 19:15so helpful to be with other shooters or another shooter that has the experience that
- 19:22you don't. Yes, I mean even I at the level of I mean
- 19:26not that I'm any I was fired a few more rounds than I have.
- 19:32I was a swat sniper for seven eight years and um went to Gunny Halfcock's
- 19:36White Feathers School, you know, imminently qualified back in the day. I'm
- 19:40not that guy anymore. I mean, I don't do that anymore. I
- 19:44was talking to somebody wants to put on a long range school over in Jackson
- 19:48County coming up, and we're gonna try to work something out with them,
- 19:51and uh, you know, I'm just not that guy. I making hunt.
- 19:53I do that. I can teach you to do it, but you
- 19:57know it takes me a few minut get back there but being around people.
- 20:02When I'm around to other people that are doing stuff different, I watch and
- 20:04I learned. I'm still learning to this day. I go into shop to
- 20:07guys behind the counter, well know things that I don't know based on new
- 20:11products. I'm busy trying to make sure, you know, we're paying our
- 20:14bills and doing the back end stuff, and then lowing behold some new product
- 20:18walks through and everybody behind the counter is going, hey, you've seen this
- 20:21right, No, no, let me see that. That's cool because there's
- 20:23new, cool stuff on the market constantly. You just can't get caught up
- 20:27in you know, for the average shooter, the average listener here on this
- 20:32show, find something that works, stick with it. Don't buy five different
- 20:36brands of guns. You know you want a little gun, get the same
- 20:38model, the same brand as the big gun. Just make sure they're similar
- 20:41enough that they operate the same. You know, there's things like that.
- 20:45I know you don't do that, but I'm telling you it's a good idea.
- 20:49We started counting shows at the beginning because we weren't sure how long he'd
- 20:53last. Now we're just proving to everyone that week in count This is the
- 21:03morning show with Preston Scott Charlie Strickland of the Talent Training Group my guest for
- 21:08one more segment talking about red dots and pistols and familiarity and don't be jumping
- 21:18around. So you're at the range and you hopefully have your red dot sighted
- 21:23in pretty accurately to unite hitting your groups, more than likely it's you and
- 21:30not the dot. Well, here's the thing is if you'll know it's you
- 21:33if you're not shooting a tight group, if you're shooting a nice tight group.
- 21:37Let's say you're shooting at five to seven yards with a pistol, which
- 21:41is really training distance. That's that's where you should be training. You know,
- 21:45you're looking at further distances. You're looking for slow, methodical shots,
- 21:49trying to maintain your accuracy. But you know, at combat distances from five
- 21:55to seven yards. A lot of people they'll train beyond that and then they'll
- 21:57wonder why they're not hitting anything. It's because you're two dog gone far away
- 22:00and it's a pistol. As your skills develop and advanced, and yes,
- 22:03you can increase your distance and it's kind of fun to do that later,
- 22:07Yeah, and go down and shoot the steel the knockdown headplates or the dueling
- 22:11trees or something that goes. And you can't underestimate the training value of shooting
- 22:17steel. But don't shoot the steel. Get a can of white spray paint.
- 22:21Go down there and paint the targets white. Okay, because steel does
- 22:25a lot for you, And I digress, but steel does a lot for
- 22:27you when you're training, because when you're shooting a paper target, you go
- 22:32boom, and then you're looking for to see if you hit anything. Okay,
- 22:36your brain is not the feedback is that loop is not being built because
- 22:41you're not telling your body. You know your brain and it's deep areas,
- 22:45The neural pathways aren't being reinforced because all you know is that your hand and
- 22:51your body made a certain movement and you heard a loud noise and then cognitively,
- 22:56consciously in your forebrain you're looking to see if there was a result.
- 23:00That doesn't teach your body anything. It's like riding a bike. You know
- 23:03you're riding a bike. You know you messed up when you fall down.
- 23:07My bad? Yeah, I mean it hurts, and uh so, yeah,
- 23:11who was it? Dion Sanders doesn't like my bad. We were talking
- 23:14about that this morning for the early morning listeners. I didn't hear that.
- 23:18Yeah, I know where it came from. Yeah, it wasn't the whoop.
- 23:22The person that came up with my bad. I know what you're bad,
- 23:25so you do it. It's kind of like saying I'm sorry man,
- 23:27you know, but okay, so, but the thing is shooting still.
- 23:32If you're shooting still, you immediately hear klang. You know, you hit
- 23:36something so audibly your brain is acknowledging that what I just did is correct,
- 23:42where my body was, how I used my pistol, everything, especially if
- 23:45I'm shooting a headplate something you know, eight inches, you know, six
- 23:49seven yards away, My body knows that I did good. What's even better
- 23:53than that is to provide visual feedback to go with the audible feedback. And
- 23:59that's where the paint in. You spray painted white. And as soon as
- 24:02you pull the trigger, arguably, if you're following through correctly, and you're
- 24:07looking at the site correctly and looking through the site at the target, then
- 24:11you will see a little gray splatter on the headplate before it falls, or
- 24:15if it's a silhouette, you'll see it appear and stay there and now your
- 24:19brain, you're visually, audibly and physically, you get all of this feedback
- 24:25that that was correct. Okay, so I'm gonna keep doing this. And
- 24:27it's that that feedback helps you learn much faster. Shooting paper, there's your
- 24:33time and a place, but there's a limitation. Shooting paper, you're working,
- 24:40you're working on a certain level of learning. But really when you move
- 24:42down to shoot steel, that's that's where it's at. Sorry, I digressed
- 24:48from what you asked me, but I know you let it perfectly from it.
- 24:52It's a it's an important thing. I had. I had a person
- 24:53up in doth And not long ago. We were doing some training and he
- 24:56was wanting to do this, this, this and this, and I said,
- 25:00you know, forget paper, grab back can of spray paint. Let's
- 25:03go down to the steel range. And by the end of the class what
- 25:06he did not think he could accomplish on a dueling tree. He's I want
- 25:08to run a dueling tree. I want to knock I want to get a
- 25:11perfect run up and down. And we did that by the time hour and
- 25:15a half of training, and he walked away with a big smile on his
- 25:19face and said, I didn't think I could do that and maybe more importantly
- 25:23better trained well. He also quit using three different pistols to try that,
- 25:26and we focused on one long making model so he could focus on the one
- 25:30that he wanted to do the most with and just put the other ones up.
- 25:36Always good to see if thanks for coming in. Glad to be here,
