- 0:01Speaker 1: You're listening to Hawk Talk with former Seahawks wide receiver
- 0:05Speaker 1: Michael Bumpus. After ten yard line second to day free
- 0:09Speaker 1: wide receivers now in motion is Bumpas left to write
- 0:12Speaker 1: Julius Jones with single setback Matt pump Fecks looking at
- 0:14Speaker 1: the goal line, he throws it into the end zone. Touchdown.
- 0:17Speaker 1: Say Hawks, it's Michael Bumpas with a diving catching the
- 0:21Speaker 1: end zone. Our ten yard touchdown reception for Bumpas, and
- 0:26Speaker 1: the kid out of Washington State has found himself a
- 0:29Speaker 1: place on this team. Powered by Seahawks dot Com. Welcome
- 0:33Speaker 1: to another edition of Hawk Talk podcast. This time we
- 0:36Speaker 1: were previewing the San Francisco forty nine ers. I'm your boy,
- 0:39Speaker 1: Nasa Choby throwing long side. The host is with the mostes,
- 0:42Speaker 1: Michael Bumpus. You can catch him weekdays ten to two
- 0:45Speaker 1: on The Bumma Stacy Show on seven ten and everywhere
- 0:48Speaker 1: Hawks live. Bump you're doing your thing. Let's good, damn
- 0:50Speaker 1: busy like you, my friend, getting ready for another week
- 0:53Speaker 1: Hawks coming off the wind. Let's go now it feels
- 0:56Speaker 1: good man. I'm still basking in the glory of Monday
- 0:59Speaker 1: night football. I'm a rule violator because Pete tells you
- 1:02Speaker 1: to get over turned the page. I already had to
- 1:03Speaker 1: tell the street Monday, everyone's on the next thing. But
- 1:05Speaker 1: I'm still basking in the glory of what happened on
- 1:08Speaker 1: the big win on Monday night. But I will do
- 1:11Speaker 1: my best to kind of calm those those nerves down
- 1:13Speaker 1: and put it forward to the San Francisco forty nine Ers.
- 1:16Speaker 1: What's on tap? What's on tap? Division rival with the
- 1:23Speaker 1: San Francisco forty nine Ers. They are oh in one,
- 1:26Speaker 1: tied for the last place in the NFC West. I
- 1:28Speaker 1: love how to throw that in there. You know what
- 1:29Speaker 1: I'm saying. You got three teams that had to do
- 1:31Speaker 1: the last because you know your Hawks are in first place,
- 1:34Speaker 1: which is great now, Bump, this forty nine Ers game
- 1:37Speaker 1: last week against the Bears was something, you know, it
- 1:39Speaker 1: shocked me a little bit. You know, everything we've kind
- 1:41Speaker 1: of heard about this forty nine Ers team, what we've
- 1:43Speaker 1: seen with our own two eyes is a really good
- 1:44Speaker 1: football team, a great roster with a ton of guys
- 1:47Speaker 1: that we're gonna get into in this podcast. And they
- 1:49Speaker 1: go up to Chicago and it is a rainstorm. I'm
- 1:52Speaker 1: talking a monsoon like flooding type type of thing. You
- 1:55Speaker 1: can barely see the yard markers. You got Justin fields
- 1:58Speaker 1: diving into puddles, d around, So the conditions weren't great.
- 2:02Speaker 1: But that being said, you know, the Niners lose on
- 2:07Speaker 1: the road to a Bears team that people don't think
- 2:09Speaker 1: it's gonna be very good. You know, it was a
- 2:11Speaker 1: nassy game. Bears end up winning nineteen ten, and all
- 2:15Speaker 1: eyes were on young Trey Lands, who is now the guy.
- 2:18Speaker 1: He's a clear cut starter, he's the guy. Now what
- 2:22Speaker 1: did you see from him? You know what I mean,
- 2:23Speaker 1: his stats weren't that great, But what did you see
- 2:25Speaker 1: from Trey? And did you expect more in his debut? Yeah?
- 2:28Speaker 1: I did expect more. And people forget man, the Niners
- 2:30Speaker 1: passed up on Justin Fields to get Trey Lands. So
- 2:32Speaker 1: it's like there's a matchup going on here that no
- 2:35Speaker 1: one's really talking about. And he looked like a rookie.
- 2:37Speaker 1: He looked like a guy who is getting his first
- 2:40Speaker 1: start and the rain is coming in sideways and there's
- 2:42Speaker 1: puddles on the field. You know, he didn't look comfortable
- 2:44Speaker 1: out There was thirteen to twenty eight, one hundred and
- 2:46Speaker 1: six four yards one touchdown. And probably the worst part
- 2:49Speaker 1: about this thing is that they were one for three
- 2:51Speaker 1: in the resume. You know, once you get into that resume,
- 2:54Speaker 1: you have to put up points. And especially with this
- 2:56Speaker 1: forty Niners offense, you know you're gonna see jests, sweeps,
- 2:59Speaker 1: You're gonna see a great run game. Shanahan's gonna call
- 3:02Speaker 1: plays off the run. I wonder if the conditions kind
- 3:05Speaker 1: of hindered his play calling. But end of the day,
- 3:08Speaker 1: you expected the forty nine is Rainers, shine, snow, sleep, whatever,
- 3:12Speaker 1: to go to Chicago and get it done against the Bears,
- 3:14Speaker 1: especially with their kind of personality of football team. When
- 3:17Speaker 1: you think of the forty nine Ers, you think tough, physical,
- 3:19Speaker 1: Fred Warner, Nick Bosa, all these guys on the offensive line, big, strong,
- 3:23Speaker 1: physical guys. So I'm not saying they got out physical
- 3:26Speaker 1: or anything like that, but those are the type of
- 3:27Speaker 1: ball games you'd expect them to win. Close, grinded out
- 3:30Speaker 1: run the football they were. Unfortunately didn't come up with
- 3:33Speaker 1: the victory for their sake. Justin fields and the other side.
- 3:36Speaker 1: He wasn't flashy. He was eight of seventeen one hundred
- 3:38Speaker 1: and twenty one yards, but did have the two touchdowns
- 3:40Speaker 1: and one interception. So I'm wondering we're gonna talk to
- 3:45Speaker 1: a lot of guys from San Francisco throughout the week,
- 3:46Speaker 1: whether it's on Hawk Talk or before the game on Sunday,
- 3:49Speaker 1: with the expectations where they were coming into this season.
- 3:52Speaker 1: I know it's one week, it's just week once. You
- 3:54Speaker 1: don't want to overreact to just one football game. But
- 3:58Speaker 1: I'm wondering if the chatter is how soon the chatter's
- 4:00Speaker 1: gonna start with Jimmy g kind of waiting in the wings,
- 4:03Speaker 1: even though they've dedicated they say, Trey Lance, this is
- 4:05Speaker 1: your ball up, this is your team. But to have
- 4:07Speaker 1: him there and to have Trey Lance struggle, and if
- 4:08Speaker 1: he continues to struggle, I'm wondering how soon some of
- 4:11Speaker 1: those Jimmy Garoppolo whispers are gonna start up. Well, for
- 4:14Speaker 1: the fans, they're probably already whispering. You know what fans are, man,
- 4:17Speaker 1: They literally take a week by week, so you can't overreact,
- 4:19Speaker 1: but you have to react. And the reality is that
- 4:22Speaker 1: Trey Lanz didn't look great. He didn't look like a
- 4:24Speaker 1: guy who was had this whole thing under control. And
- 4:27Speaker 1: that's why I didn't really like the move of them
- 4:28Speaker 1: keeping Jimmy g because you knew that we were gonna
- 4:31Speaker 1: have this conversation. People were gonna have this conversation as
- 4:33Speaker 1: soon as that young man did not do what people
- 4:35Speaker 1: expect him to do. Jim is over there creeping. I
- 4:39Speaker 1: just have a vision of him just like peeping around
- 4:41Speaker 1: the corner with one eye. You know what I'm saying,
- 4:43Speaker 1: ever so softly, like, look, I'm still here. You need me.
- 4:46Speaker 1: I can run this offense. I know this offense. So
- 4:49Speaker 1: Trey Lanz has a chance to kind of keep him
- 4:52Speaker 1: at that arm's reach. But you know they playing Hawks
- 4:55Speaker 1: this week. So I hope you does the same thing
- 4:56Speaker 1: he did last week and then struggle a little bit. Yes,
- 4:58Speaker 1: I would love that. I love to get turnovers, some takeaways.
- 5:01Speaker 1: And as we said, we always look at the head
- 5:03Speaker 1: to head comparison. We said this on our last podcast.
- 5:06Speaker 1: You know, looking at last year's stats and after one game,
- 5:09Speaker 1: it's hard to digest the numbers because you know, this
- 5:12Speaker 1: could be a fluke, it could be a one time thing.
- 5:14Speaker 1: Things averages get swung so quickly after just looking at
- 5:17Speaker 1: the first week, but looking at this head to head comparison,
- 5:21Speaker 1: offensively in numbers, both teams and scored a ton of
- 5:23Speaker 1: points in their first matchup. So both teams were ranking
- 5:26Speaker 1: kind of in the bottom half of the league, Seahawks
- 5:28Speaker 1: at twenty ninth in a total offense in terms of
- 5:31Speaker 1: yardage and the forty nine Ers ranking at twentieth. And
- 5:33Speaker 1: then you look at running the ball, the Seahawks were
- 5:36Speaker 1: tied for twenty fourth at seventy six yards a game
- 5:38Speaker 1: and the forty nine Ers had one hundred and seventy
- 5:40Speaker 1: six yards, ranking seventh. But what's deceptive about that is
- 5:43Speaker 1: it doesn't show how successful with shot Penny was when
- 5:45Speaker 1: he did get his opportunities against the Broncos, he was
- 5:48Speaker 1: twelve carries sixty yards average in five yards to carry,
- 5:51Speaker 1: So a little deceiving. I mentioned the points, and then
- 5:55Speaker 1: so looking at the offense, I think these teams are comparable,
- 5:59Speaker 1: but I think the Seahawks are definitely gonna look to
- 6:02Speaker 1: take that next step this weekend. Yeah, and taking that
- 6:05Speaker 1: next step would be going over one hundred and twenty
- 6:08Speaker 1: five yards rushing. I think that's a good number. Four
- 6:10Speaker 1: the Seahawks to hit it would be putting up more points.
- 6:13Speaker 1: You know, you're not gonna win many football games in
- 6:15Speaker 1: the league. Consistently putting up seventeen points. The funny thing
- 6:17Speaker 1: about the stats was that if you look at the
- 6:19Speaker 1: forty nine Ers defensive stats and you didn't you didn't
- 6:24Speaker 1: know that there were there was some rain going down
- 6:26Speaker 1: and the conditions were crazy, you would say, oh, yeah,
- 6:28Speaker 1: this is the forty nine Ers defense that we know, right,
- 6:31Speaker 1: total defense number one on allowing two hundred and four yards,
- 6:34Speaker 1: rush defense fifteenth, past defense number one points allowed, tip
- 6:39Speaker 1: for nine allow in nineteen, So yeah, you're right this
- 6:41Speaker 1: week one. Right, you can't really look into these stats,
- 6:43Speaker 1: but to the untrained eye, they would look at these
- 6:45Speaker 1: stats and say, yea, the forty nine Ers are at
- 6:47Speaker 1: it again, but take to account of what happened trade Lands.
- 6:50Speaker 1: I think the stat leaders obviously trade Lands not obviously.
- 6:54Speaker 1: He did lead the team in Russian with fifty four
- 6:57Speaker 1: yards and passing about one hundred and sixty four yards.
- 7:00Speaker 1: Deevo Samuel scored a touchdown. We expect him to be
- 7:02Speaker 1: heavily involved in Nick Bolsa does exactly what he's supposed
- 7:05Speaker 1: to do. He has a sack, So yeah, week one.
- 7:08Speaker 1: I feel like these these stats get more interesting maybe
- 7:10Speaker 1: around week three, four five, because you have a chance
- 7:13Speaker 1: to improve on some things and it really show who
- 7:15Speaker 1: you are as a ball club. So you don't take
- 7:18Speaker 1: it for what you want at this point of the year.
- 7:19Speaker 1: Oh yeah, it's all about sample size. And like you said,
- 7:22Speaker 1: about three weeks, when you actually have some real data
- 7:24Speaker 1: and teams are playing their guys and everything's going on,
- 7:26Speaker 1: we'll have a better idea about what's going on there.
- 7:29Speaker 1: But as you guys know, we're taking on the San
- 7:30Speaker 1: Francisco forty nine Ers and this is a very familiar matchup,
- 7:34Speaker 1: so let's learn about the history. No, your history. Seahawks
- 7:38Speaker 1: lead the all time series twenty nine to seventeen in
- 7:41Speaker 1: the regular season last meeting. You know, last year the
- 7:44Speaker 1: Seahawks did sweep the forty nine Ers in that season
- 7:47Speaker 1: series in the last matchup, that beat him thirty to
- 7:49Speaker 1: twenty three at Lumanfield And that was a fun game.
- 7:52Speaker 1: I remember Travis Homer got things going with that seventy
- 7:54Speaker 1: three yard touchdown on the fake punt. Yeah, and it
- 7:57Speaker 1: was another game where we mentioned this our last no
- 7:59Speaker 1: year history is there's gonna be some funny nuggets in there,
- 8:02Speaker 1: Like when you look back, you're gonna be like, wait,
- 8:04Speaker 1: Adrian Peterson scored a touchdown for the Seahawks and he
- 8:07Speaker 1: had that which which was cool to see there. And
- 8:10Speaker 1: then the Estridge actually got his first touchdown in that game.
- 8:12Speaker 1: That was kind of our first real glimpse of d
- 8:14Speaker 1: Estrids Because he played in that Colts game last year
- 8:17Speaker 1: had the bad concussion, we didn't really get to see
- 8:19Speaker 1: much of him till the end of the season, so
- 8:21Speaker 1: that was cool to see Tyre Locket in that ball game.
- 8:23Speaker 1: Led all receivers were seven receptions sixty eight yards on
- 8:25Speaker 1: the Seahawks side, and despite the loss, George Kittle balled
- 8:29Speaker 1: out nine receptions one hundred and eighty one yards and
- 8:31Speaker 1: two touchdowns and bump. Obviously we never We hope guys
- 8:35Speaker 1: were healthy doing their thing in the league. But if
- 8:37Speaker 1: George Kittle can't play against the Seahawks this Sunday, I'm
- 8:40Speaker 1: okay with it. Yeah, I'm gonna tell George Kittle may
- 8:44Speaker 1: take another week, dude, you know, make sure you're healthier
- 8:46Speaker 1: and ready to go for the season. But you know,
- 8:48Speaker 1: if George's out there, we'll do what we gotta do.
- 8:50Speaker 1: But when one of the best tight ends in the
- 8:52Speaker 1: league has a possibility of not being able to play,
- 8:55Speaker 1: you don't frown upon that. Not at all. No, not
- 8:57Speaker 1: at all. So if George Kittle you're out there, you'd
- 9:00Speaker 1: be safe, be healthy, take all the time you need,
- 9:03Speaker 1: and then if you want to take a night off
- 9:04Speaker 1: in December on a Thursday night, you know to short
- 9:07Speaker 1: week that week too, So feel free to do your best.
- 9:09Speaker 1: Go free, go free man. All right, let's keep it
- 9:11Speaker 1: in the NFC West, what's the word? And the Seahawks
- 9:18Speaker 1: where the NFC West champs? Again? What's the word? In
- 9:22Speaker 1: the West? On Hot Talk? Collectively, it was not a
- 9:28Speaker 1: good week for the NFC West. If you're not the Seahawks,
- 9:31Speaker 1: they're the only team to come out with the win.
- 9:33Speaker 1: The Rams lose, the Cardinals lose, and the forty nine
- 9:36Speaker 1: is lose. It still could be a tough division though,
- 9:38Speaker 1: we shall see. But the highlight game, I guess the
- 9:41Speaker 1: start off the season was the Rams first the Bills.
- 9:44Speaker 1: There's such a thing as a Super Bowl hangover, so
- 9:45Speaker 1: everyone's waiting to see is that going to be the
- 9:48Speaker 1: case for the Rams. You can kind of say, what's
- 9:50Speaker 1: the case? It's hard. I feel like it's hard to
- 9:51Speaker 1: be celebrated before the game. You're hugging, you get your rings,
- 9:55Speaker 1: like the vibes are good. But then you're like, Okay,
- 9:57Speaker 1: we gotta play some football, and you gotta play a game.
- 10:00Speaker 1: It's one of the best teams in the league, a
- 10:01Speaker 1: team that's picked to win the Super Bowl, the Buffalo Bills.
- 10:04Speaker 1: The Bills jumped out to our early league ten. Oh,
- 10:06Speaker 1: but the Rams do what they do. Get the ball
- 10:08Speaker 1: to Cooper Cup, you score a touchdown, they tie it
- 10:11Speaker 1: up at halftime, but after that it was all the Bills.
- 10:13Speaker 1: The Bills scored twenty one on answer points in rout
- 10:16Speaker 1: two and an impressive victory thirty one to Tim Matthew Stafford.
- 10:20Speaker 1: He struggled a little bit, twenty ninety one two hundred
- 10:23Speaker 1: forty yards, one touchdowns, but he threw three interceptions and
- 10:26Speaker 1: was sacked seven times. That is never good. The running
- 10:29Speaker 1: game didn't really get going. Darrel Henderson let the Rams
- 10:31Speaker 1: for forty seven yards. You're on touchdown. Cam Akers only
- 10:34Speaker 1: have three touches that game, which is crazy to me.
- 10:37Speaker 1: But there's one thing that you can always count on
- 10:39Speaker 1: with the Rams. Cooper Cup is gonna do a sting.
- 10:42Speaker 1: You have thirteen receptions, one hundred and twenty eight yards
- 10:45Speaker 1: and one touchdown. Now So when you look at Josh Allen,
- 10:49Speaker 1: you look at something that every team wants and the
- 10:51Speaker 1: quarterback who was mobile and who can throw that thing.
- 10:54Speaker 1: It was twenty six to thirty one, two ninety seven yards,
- 10:57Speaker 1: three touchdowns, two interceptions. Let the team in Russian had
- 11:00Speaker 1: the play of the weekend. For me, whenever I see
- 11:02Speaker 1: a quarterback stiff arm a grown man, I get excited
- 11:05Speaker 1: because quarterbacks ain't supposed to do that, so that Gout'm excited.
- 11:09Speaker 1: Now it's a weak one. But don't want to overreacts.
- 11:11Speaker 1: But the Rams look like they can take some mails
- 11:16Speaker 1: this year. I'm hoping that's the case. And like you said,
- 11:18Speaker 1: the Bills are probably one of the best teams in
- 11:20Speaker 1: the Nation Football League, if not the best team as
- 11:22Speaker 1: it currently sits right now. Josh Allen is a phenomenal athlete,
- 11:25Speaker 1: his height, his size, running guys over finishing at the
- 11:29Speaker 1: goal line, over Bobby Wagner. I mean, Josh Allen is
- 11:31Speaker 1: a competitor and he's a great football player. I love
- 11:33Speaker 1: the accuracy twenty six to thirty one. Obviously he'd love
- 11:35Speaker 1: to have the interceptions back, but no, they look like
- 11:39Speaker 1: the Bills look like a great football team in the Rams.
- 11:41Speaker 1: It's like you said, it's hard. I can't imagine trying
- 11:43Speaker 1: to get your ring and all that stuff family in town.
- 11:45Speaker 1: It's a first game of the season, and then have
- 11:47Speaker 1: that the Bills come into town, who have that chipping
- 11:50Speaker 1: on shoulder, who have been you know, a tire losing
- 11:52Speaker 1: to the Chiefs in the playoffs and are ready for
- 11:54Speaker 1: that season to get going. So it'll be very interesting,
- 11:56Speaker 1: especially looking at Matthew Stafford on that shoulder and how
- 11:59Speaker 1: everything kind holds up, and it's it's really hard to
- 12:03Speaker 1: climb that mountaintop again, you know. It's it's one of
- 12:06Speaker 1: those things when you get that good, you think I
- 12:07Speaker 1: remember and be back every single year. But they got
- 12:09Speaker 1: a lot of guys, They paid a lot of guys.
- 12:11Speaker 1: It will be interesting to see. I'm obviously hoping they'd
- 12:13Speaker 1: fall off a little bit. Time will tell, but that
- 12:16Speaker 1: was a great way to start at the season off
- 12:17Speaker 1: for the NFC West. The other matchup Moup I don't
- 12:20Speaker 1: talk about is the Cardinals in the Chiefs. Holy smokes
- 12:22Speaker 1: the Cardinals. Man. I mean again, we're a week one,
- 12:25Speaker 1: so I don't want to overact everything, so I'll preface
- 12:27Speaker 1: everything by saying that. But the Chiefs are a great
- 12:29Speaker 1: football team, but they came in and it was all Chiefs,
- 12:32Speaker 1: so scores forty four to twenty one, but it was
- 12:34Speaker 1: not that close. Chiefs led twenty three to seven at
- 12:36Speaker 1: the half and up thirty seven to seven heading in
- 12:39Speaker 1: the fourth quarter. And Patrick Mahomes were doing whatever he
- 12:42Speaker 1: wanted to do thirty to thirty nine, three hundred and
- 12:45Speaker 1: sixty yards and five touchdowns, no interceptions, and was not sacked.
- 12:49Speaker 1: I mean, that just sounds like seven on seven numbers
- 12:51Speaker 1: right there. So it's it's it'll be interesting to see.
- 12:55Speaker 1: And again, the Cardinals had a lot going on this offseason.
- 12:59Speaker 1: Colin mary gets signed a big contract. They may finally
- 13:01Speaker 1: broke the street getting into playoffs last year, So it'll
- 13:03Speaker 1: be interesting to see where they go from here. Bump.
- 13:06Speaker 1: But it was not a good showing in Week one.
- 13:08Speaker 1: N not a good showing at all. You mentioned Pat
- 13:10Speaker 1: mahonmes doing his staying five touchdowns, no harder sessions that
- 13:12Speaker 1: he's five and oh season openers as it started good
- 13:15Speaker 1: for him. Kelsey, you know you can depend on Kelsey.
- 13:17Speaker 1: These tight ends, man, they change in the game. Eight perceptions,
- 13:19Speaker 1: one one hundred and twenty one yards, one touchdown. The
- 13:23Speaker 1: thing that I always look at to see if an
- 13:25Speaker 1: offense is struggling are third down conversions. Now you look
- 13:28Speaker 1: at the Cardinals in their third down conversions three for twelve.
- 13:31Speaker 1: That means you're you're getting to third and longs or
- 13:33Speaker 1: you're just getting there. You're not converted, you're not sustaining
- 13:35Speaker 1: a lot of drives. Also first downs. Kansas City have
- 13:37Speaker 1: thirty three first downs. They're moving the chains to the
- 13:40Speaker 1: Cardinals eighteen. That offense was not good enough. Yeah, that's hard.
- 13:44Speaker 1: It's hard to win ball games out way when you
- 13:45Speaker 1: can't say on the field and third down or you know,
- 13:47Speaker 1: the fact that you're in that many third downs means
- 13:49Speaker 1: you're not even getting big completions, big gains. So it'll
- 13:53Speaker 1: be again interesting to see. I mean, the Rams and
- 13:55Speaker 1: the Cardinals both had incredibly tough opponents in Week one
- 13:58Speaker 1: and we'll kind of see how their season ago. But
- 14:01Speaker 1: like you said at the beginning, man, it was a
- 14:02Speaker 1: great week if you're a Seahawks fan for the NFC West,
- 14:05Speaker 1: as the Seahawks are one and on the division and
- 14:07Speaker 1: holding one game lead over everyone else in the division.
- 14:11Speaker 1: But let's get back to those San Francisco forty nine
- 14:13Speaker 1: Ers and man up? Who is this man up? On
- 14:23Speaker 1: Hawk Talk? Both these teams, the Seahawks and the forty
- 14:28Speaker 1: nine ers, are working with new quarterbacks and Trey Lance
- 14:31Speaker 1: has been the focus of this offseason. You want to
- 14:33Speaker 1: see what this young man does, and we're gonna see
- 14:36Speaker 1: what he does against the Seahawk defense man. He was
- 14:38Speaker 1: thirteen of twenty eight, one hundred and sixty four yards,
- 14:40Speaker 1: one interception, and sacked twice last week. Now, his career
- 14:44Speaker 1: numbers in the seven games fifty four for ninety nine
- 14:47Speaker 1: completely rate of fifty four percent, six hundred and sixty
- 14:51Speaker 1: seven yards, five touchdowns, three interceptions, sacks six times. But
- 14:54Speaker 1: he can run that rock to fifty one carries for
- 14:56Speaker 1: twenty twenty two yards, one touchdown and three career starts.
- 14:59Speaker 1: The think that fascinates me about Trey Lance is that
- 15:02Speaker 1: he's only played nineteen games in college at North Dakota State.
- 15:05Speaker 1: Right He's only had one real season after his senior
- 15:07Speaker 1: year of high school. But that season was impressive. If
- 15:10Speaker 1: you look at the numbers, you can understand why Shanahan
- 15:12Speaker 1: is like, you know what, I might want to take
- 15:14Speaker 1: a chance on that kid. Almost three thousand yards thirty
- 15:17Speaker 1: touchdowns one interception in the National champions I don't care
- 15:20Speaker 1: what level you play at. You're throwing thirty touchdowns and
- 15:24Speaker 1: one interception. That is very attractive. Now, we've only seen
- 15:27Speaker 1: the sample size of this dude right as a starter,
- 15:30Speaker 1: going to see one game, saw sample size last year.
- 15:32Speaker 1: He's gonna grow. I assume he's going to get better.
- 15:34Speaker 1: Shanahan's going to figure out how to call plays for him.
- 15:37Speaker 1: But so far you can tell that he's a rookie
- 15:39Speaker 1: and he's got some serrun to grow. Yeah, absolutely, I
- 15:42Speaker 1: think the talent is there. Obviously, you mentioned the one
- 15:44Speaker 1: season at North Dakota State, which phenomenal. I mean, I
- 15:47Speaker 1: don't care what love you're at, FCS Division two, NAI
- 15:50Speaker 1: whatever it is. That is impressive feet and that's hard
- 15:53Speaker 1: to do. And he kind of got his feet wet
- 15:55Speaker 1: last year. But last year was kind of tough. He
- 15:56Speaker 1: was kind of thrown in there because of injuries of
- 15:58Speaker 1: Jimmy Garoppolo. Now, going this season, you had all the reps,
- 16:01Speaker 1: you had, all the mining camps, you had training camp,
- 16:03Speaker 1: you had preseason as the guy, and again it's a
- 16:06Speaker 1: really a really tough situation to go into Chicago in
- 16:09Speaker 1: terms of the conditions and whatever plans Shanahan had. But
- 16:12Speaker 1: it's gonna be interesting see because we don't have a
- 16:13Speaker 1: lot of sample size with Trey Lance. I don't know
- 16:16Speaker 1: he's that guy that's going to be kind of questioned
- 16:18Speaker 1: throughout the season because we really don't know what we've
- 16:21Speaker 1: seen from him and we haven't seen him be able
- 16:22Speaker 1: to put together several solid games. So it'll be interesting
- 16:25Speaker 1: to see the gameplay and Kyle Shannahan has for the Seahawks.
- 16:29Speaker 1: Given what we saw from the Seahawks defense, and we
- 16:31Speaker 1: mentioned it earlier, the numbers aren't great when you look
- 16:33Speaker 1: at the defense and where the rank in terms of yardage.
- 16:36Speaker 1: But what happened was when things when push came to
- 16:39Speaker 1: shove and it was down on the goal line, the
- 16:40Speaker 1: Seahawks defense stepped up and it wasn't something like the
- 16:43Speaker 1: Broncos just dropped the football. Those were forced. Those are
- 16:45Speaker 1: plays the Seahawks we were making. And to hold Russell
- 16:48Speaker 1: Wilson on any roster, I don't care what it is.
- 16:50Speaker 1: The sixteen points, it's pretty good, so it'll be interesting
- 16:53Speaker 1: to see. I'm really looking for the Seahawks defense to
- 16:55Speaker 1: ratchet up that pressure, you know, what I'm saying. I thought, unfortunately,
- 16:59Speaker 1: you know, Jamal Ad is not gonna be playing for
- 17:00Speaker 1: a while. That was tough to take. But on the
- 17:02Speaker 1: play he got hurt on that's the kind of step
- 17:05Speaker 1: that makes his defense dynamic. You have people go in
- 17:07Speaker 1: different ways and you and you bring Jamaal off the
- 17:09Speaker 1: edge or wherever it's gonna be, playing safety free to
- 17:11Speaker 1: the quarterbacks. So I'm looking for them to play a
- 17:13Speaker 1: lot of different looks and try to confuse the young
- 17:16Speaker 1: rookie in his first matchup this year. As the Seahawks
- 17:19Speaker 1: have had pretty good luck against support of nine ers
- 17:21Speaker 1: in recent years, especially now to Santa Clair, and they've
- 17:24Speaker 1: been dominant. They've been dominant down there. Yeah, I'm with you.
- 17:26Speaker 1: You have to be able to tackle. You have to
- 17:27Speaker 1: tackle right. During the preseason, tackling was an issue. I
- 17:29Speaker 1: feel like it's got better week one. It should get
- 17:32Speaker 1: better as a week goes along. What's that next matchup?
- 17:35Speaker 1: Looking like nows Gino Smith taking on that defense? My guy, Gino, Man,
- 17:40Speaker 1: I'm still giving them love. Gino fired me up. Man.
- 17:43Speaker 1: They try to write me off. I didn't write back
- 17:47Speaker 1: left Red. Yeah, I love that. Gino's a man at
- 17:51Speaker 1: a great week twenty three to twenty eight, one hundred
- 17:53Speaker 1: ninety five yards, two touchdowns. Last week set a bunch
- 17:56Speaker 1: of records out here. Is one of the best, you know,
- 17:58Speaker 1: in terms of completion percent just start that we've seen
- 18:01Speaker 1: since nineteen ninety four, only eighth player to compete complete
- 18:04Speaker 1: ninety four percent of his passing in the first half
- 18:06Speaker 1: while tempting at least eighteen passes. We know what Gino
- 18:09Speaker 1: can do, and I think he just gave a glimpse
- 18:11Speaker 1: of where he's at. And he's gonna have his hands
- 18:14Speaker 1: cut out for him because this Niners unit is gonna
- 18:16Speaker 1: be physical, They're gonna be strong, They're gonna have guys
- 18:19Speaker 1: rushing from all sides. So as long as Gino continues
- 18:21Speaker 1: to be him, and I think him and Jane Waldron
- 18:23Speaker 1: kind of getting a rhythm for what plays Geno likes, right.
- 18:26Speaker 1: I loved when he had the design run to pick
- 18:28Speaker 1: up a third down. I love his mobility that everyone's
- 18:31Speaker 1: kind of slept on stepping up in the pocket, looking
- 18:33Speaker 1: down the field, and then you're bringing all the tight
- 18:35Speaker 1: ends that have been used. So I'm looking for Gino
- 18:37Speaker 1: to a little more of the same. I mean, we
- 18:39Speaker 1: can't ask him to start games like he did in
- 18:41Speaker 1: terms of completion percentage because it's the National Football League.
- 18:44Speaker 1: But I'm excited to see what Gino can do against
- 18:45Speaker 1: a tough San Francisco defense. Yeah, just be in control.
- 18:48Speaker 1: And that's what I thought watching this game, that Gino
- 18:51Speaker 1: was in control. He didn't look flustered, he didn't look rushed,
- 18:53Speaker 1: he looked like he understood the offense, knew what defense
- 18:56Speaker 1: he was looking at. But now it's on film. Now
- 18:58Speaker 1: people have an idea will Shane Walsen and Gino will
- 19:01Speaker 1: want to do. So they got coaches over there too
- 19:04Speaker 1: with the forty nine ers. They would devise a game
- 19:05Speaker 1: plan to get out and we know that the forty
- 19:07Speaker 1: nine ers have been one of the best defenses in
- 19:09Speaker 1: the league for years now and there's no surprise that
- 19:12Speaker 1: they ranked number one in total offense. So yes, it's
- 19:14Speaker 1: all about making these adjustments and I'm excited to see
- 19:17Speaker 1: how they build off the game plan from last week.
- 19:20Speaker 1: The next matchup, Nick Bosa verse my guy Abe, Lucas
- 19:23Speaker 1: Goku's Abe is gonna go up against one of the
- 19:25Speaker 1: best linemen in the country in football on all levels.
- 19:29Speaker 1: That is Nick Bosa he's gonna have his hands full.
- 19:32Speaker 1: But the thing that is encouraging about this young man,
- 19:34Speaker 1: he only allowed two pressures last week. You got a
- 19:37Speaker 1: rookie on Monday night football. Honestly, I expected more penalties.
- 19:40Speaker 1: He did get one penalty, which was tikie tech has Heck,
- 19:43Speaker 1: he's not even affecting to play. His hands were inside
- 19:46Speaker 1: our offensive lineman Ray Roberts. The guru will tell you
- 19:50Speaker 1: that that was should have been called. But you're a rookie.
- 19:54Speaker 1: You don't get the benefit of the dala and learned
- 19:55Speaker 1: to deal with it. And just a little glimpse into
- 19:57Speaker 1: Bosa man, he's just he's a sack machine. That's exactly
- 20:01Speaker 1: what does he gets after the quarterback. He's coming off
- 20:04Speaker 1: for pro bol year. In twenty twenty one, he have
- 20:05Speaker 1: fifty two tackles, fifteen and a half sacks and twenty
- 20:08Speaker 1: one CFLs. That his tackles for lost people and that
- 20:12Speaker 1: led the league. Also had thirty two QB hits. He's
- 20:15Speaker 1: gonna be ready to go. Hey, we'll talk to him
- 20:16Speaker 1: on Thursday Hawks Live. We'll get a little more inside
- 20:20Speaker 1: from him. But he's got his hands full. Yeah, Bosa's
- 20:23Speaker 1: relentless man. He's got twenty five and a half career
- 20:26Speaker 1: sacks and would have had a lot more, but he
- 20:29Speaker 1: was He missed essentially the entire twenty twenty season. I
- 20:31Speaker 1: think he towards Aco. Yeah, it's gonna be it's gonna
- 20:33Speaker 1: be tough. I was watching that the Bears footage, you know,
- 20:35Speaker 1: on all twenty two, and he is get off his strength.
- 20:38Speaker 1: He's disciplined, he's good in the run game. He'll get
- 20:41Speaker 1: after the passer. You have to account for him on
- 20:43Speaker 1: every play, every play, whether you're slaying towards him, and
- 20:46Speaker 1: it's one on one. So Abe Lucas the thing I
- 20:47Speaker 1: like about him, though I had mentioned to you off air,
- 20:49Speaker 1: he's a silent assassin. He's not a guy that's gonna
- 20:52Speaker 1: be making a ton of noise. But when you come
- 20:53Speaker 1: between those lines, he's physical. You know, we mentioned it before.
- 20:57Speaker 1: The rap on him unfairly was just because he played
- 21:00Speaker 1: at Washington State that he wasn't physical and just wanted
- 21:02Speaker 1: to pass block. That is not the case. He's been
- 21:04Speaker 1: pancaking guys all camp, all preseasons. So I'm excited to
- 21:07Speaker 1: see what Ape can do against one of the league's
- 21:09Speaker 1: best and then bump the other matchup that I really
- 21:11Speaker 1: want to get into is the Seahawks defensive backs against Deebo,
- 21:15Speaker 1: Samuel Brandon Ayuk and Juan Jennings. I mean debo first
- 21:21Speaker 1: of all debos. Out of his world. Good man. He's
- 21:23Speaker 1: a Swiss army knife. He can be one of the
- 21:25Speaker 1: best receivers in the league. If he was a full
- 21:27Speaker 1: time running back, he could be one of the best
- 21:28Speaker 1: running backs in the league. He can catch the football,
- 21:30Speaker 1: he can be used all over the field. And it'll
- 21:34Speaker 1: be interesting to see how these guys match up because
- 21:36Speaker 1: they got speed, they got playmakers. But don't sleep on
- 21:39Speaker 1: the Seahawks second there. He got some young guys out there,
- 21:41Speaker 1: some different guys playing. But Mike Jackson had a great debut,
- 21:44Speaker 1: two huge fumble recoveries against the Broncos, always in the
- 21:47Speaker 1: right spot and swek woolin Man. You know, he had
- 21:49Speaker 1: a couple penalties last game, but they're a little ticky tack.
- 21:52Speaker 1: When he kind of grabbed another one, I thought he
- 21:54Speaker 1: was in good position. But what I love about him
- 21:56Speaker 1: is his bounce back ability. Something like that happens. He
- 21:59Speaker 1: was not phased in that stage, in that moment, comes
- 22:01Speaker 1: right back defensive play again. Perfectly. You want to talk
- 22:04Speaker 1: about coaches teach tape, that's the exact kind of teach tape.
- 22:07Speaker 1: A good punch on the breastplate, turn and run and
- 22:10Speaker 1: look back for the football. That's exactly how you teach it.
- 22:12Speaker 1: And a guy that can run four two six, you can't.
- 22:14Speaker 1: You can't teach that, man. And for a guy who's
- 22:17Speaker 1: played that little amount of football to be where he's
- 22:19Speaker 1: at already, we're gonna look back and again, I don't
- 22:22Speaker 1: want to put this on somebody, but I could see
- 22:24Speaker 1: us looking back in comparisons to Richard Sherman in the
- 22:28Speaker 1: sense of I'm not saying he's gonna be, you know,
- 22:30Speaker 1: Hall of Fame great, But what I'm saying is you're
- 22:32Speaker 1: gonna look back and be like, man, when you look
- 22:34Speaker 1: at the draft bread, you're gonna be like that is unbelievable.
- 22:37Speaker 1: The Seahawks are able to get that talent in the
- 22:39Speaker 1: fifth round, but these guys are gonna have their their
- 22:41Speaker 1: arms full with the forty nine ers receiving corps. Yeah, man,
- 22:45Speaker 1: you mentioned Deebo. Deebo can do it all. That did
- 22:47Speaker 1: a little bit last week two or sevens for fourteen
- 22:49Speaker 1: yards and eight carries for fifty two. Brandon I you
- 22:51Speaker 1: ketch two receptions for forty. Jennings had four receptions sixty
- 22:56Speaker 1: two Deebo Samuel last year toward up seventies receptions fourteen
- 23:01Speaker 1: hundred yards, six touchdowns and also Russia ball for three
- 23:04Speaker 1: hundred sixty five yards at UK had eight hundred twenty
- 23:06Speaker 1: six yards five tuddies and Jennings had twenty four recessions
- 23:10Speaker 1: for two eighty two and five touchdowns. All right, next matchup, Man,
- 23:15Speaker 1: the Seahawks tight ends. We're actually talking about Seahawks tight ends,
- 23:18Speaker 1: which is exciting. It's been a long time verses forty
- 23:23Speaker 1: niners linebackers. Man. Now we got three tight ends who
- 23:27Speaker 1: are capable. You got Will Dissey, got no a fan,
- 23:29Speaker 1: You got Kobe Parks. Now the Seahawks combined for eight receptions,
- 23:33Speaker 1: one hundred and two yards and two touchdowns. They got
- 23:36Speaker 1: the party going early. Man, That big play to uncle
- 23:38Speaker 1: Will Dissey thirty eight yard touchdown on the very first
- 23:40Speaker 1: drive was great. And then a lovely play design that
- 23:43Speaker 1: got Kobe Parkson and ends on for its very first touchdown.
- 23:46Speaker 1: But out of the fifty five offensive players from the Seahawks,
- 23:48Speaker 1: Dissey was on the field for thirty seven, was on
- 23:51Speaker 1: the field for thirty one. Parkson was on the field
- 23:53Speaker 1: for twenty. So those snap counsel loan let you know
- 23:56Speaker 1: there's a commitment to getting these guys involved. We also
- 23:59Speaker 1: saw some other four nations. We saw three tight ends
- 24:01Speaker 1: heavy to the right. We saw two tight ends in
- 24:03Speaker 1: the backfield like a wishbone type of look. We saw
- 24:06Speaker 1: tight ends motion outside. There is a real emphasis on
- 24:09Speaker 1: getting these guys the ball, and all that is gonna
- 24:11Speaker 1: do is open everybody else up. DK and Lock. It
- 24:14Speaker 1: might have had quiet days, but because these tight ends
- 24:17Speaker 1: are getting involved, it's gonna open things up for those
- 24:19Speaker 1: guys too. So I'm excited to see what Shane does
- 24:23Speaker 1: with these guys with this position group this week. Absolutely,
- 24:25Speaker 1: I think that's one of the missing things that the
- 24:27Speaker 1: Seahawks offenses. A tight ends, man, and when they're firing
- 24:30Speaker 1: all cylinders like this. I love that that's on tape.
- 24:32Speaker 1: I love that San Francisco has to look through all
- 24:34Speaker 1: those formations, and I can't wait to see what Shane
- 24:36Speaker 1: Waldron has cooked up for him this week. And it's
- 24:39Speaker 1: exploiting matchups. I think they're gonna look to get these
- 24:41Speaker 1: guys matched up with linebackers in situations where you know,
- 24:45Speaker 1: of course you're gonna take no a fan one on
- 24:47Speaker 1: one a linebacker coming across the field or whatever it is.
- 24:49Speaker 1: So I'm really looking forward to that. But the line
- 24:52Speaker 1: linebacking corps for the forty nine ers is pretty damn good.
- 24:55Speaker 1: Fred Warrener, Fred green Law, they got some dogs over there.
- 24:58Speaker 1: Warner's one of the best linebackers in the National fo
- 25:00Speaker 1: Ball week last year he had one hundred thirty seven tackles,
- 25:02Speaker 1: four pass defended, three fumble recovery, seven TF thousand, three
- 25:05Speaker 1: QB hits. So if you're coming across the middle, those
- 25:07Speaker 1: guys are gonna be factors for our tight ends. But
- 25:09Speaker 1: I really want to look at to that matchup and
- 25:12Speaker 1: the last one I want to take a look at
- 25:13Speaker 1: bomb Rashot Penny going to get Sat four nine in
- 25:16Speaker 1: front seven. We've talked about how good the linebackers and
- 25:19Speaker 1: the defensive line is for the forty nine ers, but
- 25:21Speaker 1: Rashad Penny, you know, ultimately, is gonna make this offense go.
- 25:25Speaker 1: I mentioned only at twelve carries for sixty yards last
- 25:28Speaker 1: week against to Broncos, but he was incredibly effective when
- 25:30Speaker 1: he had the ball, and there was two big plays
- 25:32Speaker 1: that were called back because statue would have looked a
- 25:34Speaker 1: lot better. And I think this is gonna be a
- 25:36Speaker 1: game where he's gonna get involved a lot earlier and
- 25:39Speaker 1: definitely need to be a factor because Rashad Penny, when
- 25:41Speaker 1: he's going this offense is going yeah, well, Rashot man,
- 25:44Speaker 1: It's it's more about looking at the way he moves
- 25:48Speaker 1: and seeing how he feels. You know, we know that
- 25:49Speaker 1: he's battled a bunch of injuries preseason. He's saying he's
- 25:53Speaker 1: in the best shape he's ever been in. That's encouraging.
- 25:55Speaker 1: You mentioned those two runs that were called back, big
- 25:57Speaker 1: runs even though they don't show up on the statue
- 26:00Speaker 1: when you watch the film. They're still watching film and
- 26:02Speaker 1: saying number twenty can't get loose if you give them
- 26:04Speaker 1: an opportunity too. So yeah, for Reshot, it's about just
- 26:07Speaker 1: getting used to getting hit and bouncing back up and
- 26:11Speaker 1: being the catalyst and the thing to make this offense goal.
- 26:15Speaker 1: Last week it was the tight ends. This week, I
- 26:17Speaker 1: think you lean heavily on got to open the game
- 26:20Speaker 1: up and get everybody else the ball. But there's there's
- 26:22Speaker 1: a way you gotta win. Nass and that's the path
- 26:25Speaker 1: to victory. After forty five waits for the staff, Michael
- 26:30Speaker 1: Vickson puts it down. That kick is away. If that
- 26:33Speaker 1: kick gon, it's gun, it's a path to victory on
- 26:39Speaker 1: Hawk Talk. But every game, every game's a championship opportunity.
- 26:44Speaker 1: That's how it is in Peakcress program. And when you
- 26:46Speaker 1: treat every game like that, you avoid letdowns. I know
- 26:49Speaker 1: a lot of times people when you have a big
- 26:50Speaker 1: emotional win, you're really concerned about the next game, they
- 26:52Speaker 1: call it a trap game where you want to call it,
- 26:54Speaker 1: not in this building. When you treat every game like that,
- 26:57Speaker 1: that's why the Broncos game was every other matchup at least,
- 27:00Speaker 1: that's how he's being preaching. That's how the guys believe it.
- 27:02Speaker 1: They're the next team on the schedule. It happens to
- 27:03Speaker 1: be the forty nine ers, So I'm excited for that.
- 27:06Speaker 1: I don't think there's gonna be a letdown. And when
- 27:07Speaker 1: he treat every game that way, I think I think
- 27:10Speaker 1: the Seahawks are gonna come in and I wouldn't expect
- 27:12Speaker 1: to see a letdown from them on Sunday. And you
- 27:15Speaker 1: gotta get after Trey lance Man. He's a young quarterback. Man.
- 27:18Speaker 1: I called him a rookie. It's the second year, but
- 27:21Speaker 1: I mean he's still a rookie. Yeah, play at least
- 27:24Speaker 1: sixteen seventeen games yet, So make him look like a
- 27:27Speaker 1: rookie and man beat you from the pocket. We know
- 27:30Speaker 1: that he can move, we know that he's an athlete.
- 27:31Speaker 1: When he tucks it, he can go. So it's all
- 27:33Speaker 1: about making him stay inside the pocket and be something
- 27:36Speaker 1: he doesn't want to be. I think he can throw
- 27:38Speaker 1: the ball from the pocket, but when you have youth
- 27:40Speaker 1: and athleticism, you want to use it and that's on
- 27:43Speaker 1: the outside. Keep it there. Make him be a statute absolutely,
- 27:46Speaker 1: And on our side, excusing the Seahawks side, they need
- 27:48Speaker 1: to established run. We just talked about in the last
- 27:50Speaker 1: match up forshad Penny needs to get going. I think
- 27:52Speaker 1: he's a guy that if he's around fifteen to twenty carries,
- 27:55Speaker 1: I think that's a sweet spot for him because when
- 27:57Speaker 1: he gets that many carries, that man always goes up
- 28:00Speaker 1: one hundred, always goes over one hundreds. To get that
- 28:02Speaker 1: running game going. And then you know, continuing to try
- 28:05Speaker 1: to find a way to get DK and Tyler involved
- 28:06Speaker 1: in this game plan. We know that they're obviously vocal
- 28:09Speaker 1: points in the game plan. Things shake out how they
- 28:11Speaker 1: shake out. Geno's gonna take all the defense is given them.
- 28:13Speaker 1: But with Rashad going, you're gonna be able to find
- 28:15Speaker 1: a way to get DK and Tyler going, and this
- 28:17Speaker 1: whole offense is going to be opened up. Yeah, and
- 28:20Speaker 1: we need this offense to finish stronger than they did
- 28:24Speaker 1: last week. Didn't score any points in the second half
- 28:26Speaker 1: second half. Thankfully, seventeen points were enough, but you were
