- 0:07Hello, friends, and welcome back to the Woman at the Well Ministries podcast.

- 0:20Our highest priority is helping you experience the reality of God in your everyday life.

- 0:34We invite you to sit down with us as we open the scriptures to learn more about
- 0:39who God is and to strengthen your daily walk with Jesus Christ.
- 1:03So often we hear the verse, 1 John 1.9, that says, If we confess our sins,
- 1:08He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
- 1:13However, I wonder how often we really look at what that says.
- 1:17If the truth be known, each of us need to incorporate this verse into our lives every day.
- 1:23Join us in this broadcast of Woman at the Well Ministries as Kim discusses the
- 1:26practice of this all-important verse.
- 1:29Hello, and thank you for joining us in this broadcast of Woman at the Well Ministries,
- 1:32And it is an absolute pleasure to discuss with you something that the Lord has placed on my heart.
- 1:38And I believe if you are a frequent listener to Woman at the Well Ministries,
- 1:42you'll hear the verse 1 John 1-9 fairly often.
- 1:47And it's because it's a verse that I believe that every Christian has to hold
- 1:51on to. And that is, if we confess our sins, He's faithful and just to forgive
- 1:55us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
- 1:58Now, from the very beginning, I want to make it extremely clear that that does
- 2:02not mean that this verse gives us this free pass as a license to sin.
- 2:09But what it does is it gives us the hope and the absolute truth and knowledge
- 2:14that if we do sin, which we are still in the flesh, that if we come to Christ
- 2:20for forgiveness, that he will surely cleanse us.
- 2:24It also is the verse that allows us to see what takes place when we come to
- 2:30Christ as a sinner in need of a Savior.
- 2:34When we come to him before we have that personal relationship with Jesus Christ,
- 2:38it says if we confess our sins, and the Bible is very clear,
- 2:42that we have to acknowledge that we are a sinner.
- 2:45And Romans 3.23 gives us that fact that we are all sinners in need of a Savior.
- 2:51And then what happens is we come to Christ, we confess our sins,
- 2:56and he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins.
- 3:00In Luke chapter 2 and verse 11, he says, For unto you was born this day in the
- 3:04city of David a Savior, which is Christ the Lord. And that Savior,
- 3:09Jesus Christ, is who actually forgives us of our sins.
- 3:13And you say, Kim, well, how does he do this?
- 3:15In John chapter 3 and verse 16, it says, For God so loved the world that he
- 3:20gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish,
- 3:25but have everlasting life.
- 3:27And because of his love for us, his death, burial, and resurrection,
- 3:32he allows us to have his righteousness imputed into us.
- 3:36He who knew no sin became sin for us, that we might have the righteousness of
- 3:41God through Jesus Christ.
- 3:43This is where we get our salvation.
- 3:46In John chapter 14 and verse 6, he says, I am the way, the truth,
- 3:50and the life, and no man cometh unto the Father but by me.
- 3:53So when we look at 1 John 1, 9.
- 3:56We can't help but see that this is the result of the work of Calvary.
- 4:03And so many of us believe that salvation comes and then we just go our merry
- 4:08way and we've got some sort of fire insurance to deal with us.
- 4:12So at the end of time, when we face Jesus Christ, he says, you know,
- 4:16you're one of mine. I see the blood and he passes over and you get to go into heaven.
- 4:21That isn't at all the way the work of grace,
- 4:25in your heart is the work of grace in your heart we're told in second corinthians
- 4:295 17 that behold old things are passed away all things are become new and we
- 4:34are new creatures in christ jesus,
- 4:36that work of grace that comes because of that dying on the cross for us that
- 4:42when we call upon him and we're saved it changes us but you know what.
- 4:49We still live in this world. And I bring to your mind Peter.
- 4:53Peter is talking to Jesus, his very familiar passage of scripture,
- 4:57because Jesus talks to Peter and Peter wants him to wash him all over.
- 5:02I believe it's in John chapter 11, and it deals with Jesus washing the disciples'
- 5:07feet and becoming a servant of all men, which he is the servant to all.
- 5:11Yet he is King of kings and Lord of lords.
- 5:14And Peter comes to him and he's going to wash his feet.
- 5:17And Peter says, hey wash me all over and jesus says hey you've already been
- 5:22washed all over you don't have need of that but you do need the dust of your feet washed off,
- 5:29now obviously that's a huge paraphrase but that's what it's telling us in that scripture,
- 5:34and that is where we get to first john 1 9 in the life of a believer,
- 5:39it's the place where we come to jesus getting the dust of the world washed off
- 5:44so that we are peculiar people zealous of good works that he expects us to be,
- 5:49enables us to be, and has called each of us to be.
- 5:54So when we look at 1 John 1, we have two aspects that we must stay very close to in our focus.
- 6:01The first is, he is our Savior.
- 6:05And first and foremost, we need to have taken care of that confession of sin.
- 6:10And it's extremely clear in the Word of God that that is a personal relationship.
- 6:15And it says, Whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved in Romans 10, 13.
- 6:22So it's not a confession we make to another man it's not a confession we make,
- 6:27sort of just out loud to a group of people it's a confession of our heart in
- 6:32repentance to a savior who loves us.
- 6:36It's a conversation between you and Jesus Christ and the receiving of his grace.
- 6:43But then we all are little Peters in many ways at many different times.
- 6:48But when we look at ourselves every day, just because of where we have been
- 6:53and what we've done, and I mean even walking a life that is close to God and
- 6:58is holy and acceptable and pleasing unto him,
- 7:00we still have the prince of the power of the air, which is the devil,
- 7:04walking about us seeking to devour us,
- 7:07as a result we get some dust on us,
- 7:11and we have this promise that we can confess our sins,
- 7:15and he's faithful and just to forgive us our sin now what does that mean that
- 7:20means that he has given us the holy spirit to indwell inside of us he tells
- 7:24us that in john chapter 14 and he will bring to mind those things that we have need of,
- 7:29and if we have actually taken into heart 2nd timothy 2 15 and studied to show
- 7:34ourself approved unto god a workman that needeth not to be ashamed rightly dividing
- 7:39the truth looked at psalms,
- 7:41119 105 where david said it's a lamp and a light for us to go by.
- 7:46Then when we get in such a situation that we're walking through the world and
- 7:51a little bit of stuff gets on us we have a conviction in our heart that says we need to talk to God.
- 7:58And that conversation with God is guaranteed to be fruitful because it says he's faithful and just.
- 8:06Do you realize you could sit in my presence from daylight till dark till the
- 8:10cows come over the moon and I couldn't do a thing about your sins?
- 8:15I might be able to introduce you to the scriptures. I could talk to you about
- 8:18the grace and the mercy and the absolute forgiveness of God.
- 8:21But Kim Miller can do nothing to help you with your sins.
- 8:25There's only one God who can do that.
- 8:27Again, that's in John chapter 14 and verse 6. He says, I am the way,
- 8:31the truth and the life. And no man cometh unto the Father but by me.
- 8:35He is judge of judge, king of kings, and lord of lords. And because he is truth, he is just.
- 8:43But praise be to God, he doesn't give us what we deserve. His mercy is abundant
- 8:48and his grace is sufficient.
- 8:50So we get his grace that allows us the salvation of the Lord to be given to
- 8:56us through a simple act of childlike faith.
- 8:59He's faithful and he's just.
- 9:02You don't have to worry about him lying to you.
- 9:06He said, I will forgive you. And then he says, I'll cleanse you from all unrighteousness.
- 9:14It's an interesting thing that he uses the word cleanse.
- 9:18He could have said, I'll wash you up. Now, when I was a kid and my mom sent
- 9:21me in to wash up, it never failed that when I came back out,
- 9:24she always did this like number of looking at me behind my ears and around my
- 9:28elbows and things to make sure I got myself clean.
- 9:32Because just because I had washed up did not necessarily mean i come out clean,
- 9:38because i can miss a few spots or maybe i just go in and play and then come
- 9:42back out but he didn't say i'll wash you.
- 9:45No he said he washes our sins white as snow which is a scrubbing but he said,
- 9:51i'll cleanse you because when he said i'll wash your sins and make them white
- 9:55as snow he gave us the result that he had done a good job washing because we
- 9:59went from scarlet to white,
- 10:01We went from black sin to clean pureness.
- 10:05But in this verse, he says, you tell me your sins, which are black.
- 10:09You tell me your sins, which are wrong. You tell me your sins,
- 10:12which are going to cause you destruction. And for the wages of sin is what? It's death.
- 10:17But the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ, our Lord.
- 10:20You give me your sins and I will cleanse you.
- 10:24When you're cleansed, guess what? You even smell good.
- 10:28You look good and you smell good. there is no evidence that you were ever dirty.
- 10:34If you wash up, sometimes there's streaks.
- 10:37But if you cleanse, by pure definition, there's no remnant of the filth.
- 10:44Now, isn't that fabulous?
- 10:46It would be marvelous if he washed me up.
- 10:49But it is spectacular that he cleanses me because that means as sin hits my feet.
- 10:56And notice that when Peter came to Jesus, he was washing the feet.
- 11:00He didn't expect us to get so deep and mired in sin. It'll be up to our waist,
- 11:04eyeballs and over our head.
- 11:06Simple cleansing of the feet because it should be a frequent, not a random activity.
- 11:15It should be instantaneously as the Holy Spirit tugs on your heart and tells
- 11:21you that you have stepped out of the will and the way of God and that a little
- 11:25bit of the world has kind of touched you,
- 11:28that you are immediately confessing to God and receiving his cleansing.
- 11:32Now, I want to leave you with this thought because I don't want you to catch this incorrectly.
- 11:37I'm not telling you to isolate yourself and not be in the world because we are his light.
- 11:45We are his ambassadors. We are his hands. We are his feet.
- 11:49What I'm telling you is there's no reason why the world should be part of you.
- 11:53And if we confess our sins, he's faithful and just to cleanse us so that the
- 11:57world isn't part of us and we can live in it and be a light for Jesus Christ.
