A surprise twist derailed the Kanawha County Commission’s plan to fill a vacant commissioner seat: nominees Edward Burgess and Austin Gessel sent letters saying they’d refuse the job if selected. Frustrated, Commissioner Natalie Tennant accused the move of manipulating the process. Despite the letters, the commission proceeded—striking Burgess and Page—leaving Gessel as the sole nominee.
