- 0:36Speaker 1: the same hospital. We have much more of what you
- 0:38Speaker 1: need to know. I'm Rachel Scott from ABC News. This
- 0:42Speaker 1: is what you need to know. We'll show you the
- 0:44Speaker 1: unexpected arrest with a suspected burglar hiding inside of fridge,
- 0:48Speaker 1: and the extreme heat for millions of Americans. But first,
- 0:51Speaker 1: the big story. This weekend marks one month of the
- 0:54Speaker 1: US and Israeli war with Iran, with the humanitarian crisis
- 0:58Speaker 1: deepening and energy crisis spiking worldwide, the conflict triggering global
- 1:03Speaker 1: ripple effects from mass displacement across the Middle East to
- 1:06Speaker 1: higher gas prices here at home. Seleena Wang has.
- 1:09Speaker 2: More Rachel this week in marks one month since the
- 1:12Speaker 2: US and Israeli war against Iran began, a conflict triggered
- 1:16Speaker 2: by coordinated strikes on Iranian targets followed by retaliation from Tehran.
- 1:20Speaker 2: Across the Middle East, humanitarian groups and UN officials war,
- 1:24Speaker 2: the civilian toll continues to climb. The World Health Organization
- 1:28Speaker 2: says hospitals are overwhelmed and healthcare systems are under strain
- 1:32Speaker 2: across the region. The UN estimates more than three point
- 1:36Speaker 2: two million people are now internally displaced in Iran alone,
- 1:41Speaker 2: as families flee major cities under attack. Additional strikes in
- 1:44Speaker 2: Lebanon have also contributed to mounting civilian debts and mass displacement.
- 1:50Speaker 2: The war has also had a significant economic impact, especially
- 1:53Speaker 2: on energy markets. Global oil prices have surged past one
- 1:57Speaker 2: hundred of barrel that is a dramatical since the conflict started,
- 2:01Speaker 2: and gasoline prices have climbed here at home, averaging now
- 2:05Speaker 2: around three dollars and ninety cents per gallon. That is
- 2:09Speaker 2: roughly a dollar more than one month ago at the
- 2:12Speaker 2: start of this war, and economists say that these disruptions
- 2:15Speaker 2: to oil and gas supply roots, including around the Strait
- 2:19Speaker 2: of Horror, movez are creating these ripple effects beyond the
- 2:21Speaker 2: Middle East, driving up fuel costs.
- 2:24Speaker 1: There are now two major verdicts against social media giants.
- 2:27Speaker 1: The latest coming out of New Mexico, a jury found
- 2:30Speaker 1: Meta violated state law by feeling to protect children and
- 2:33Speaker 1: mislead the public about the platform safety. And in Los Angeles,
- 2:37Speaker 1: another jury found Meta and YouTube designed addictive apps that
- 2:41Speaker 1: harmed youngsters. Elizabeth Sholzi has more on the implications Rachel.
- 2:45Speaker 3: This is a landmark verdict that could open the floodgates
- 2:48Speaker 3: to more lawsuits alleging that social media companies harmed kids
- 2:52Speaker 3: and teens. A jury in California finding that Meta's Instagram
- 2:57Speaker 3: and Google's YouTube designed their apps to be addictive. The
- 3:01Speaker 3: jury awarding six million dollars to the twenty year old
- 3:04Speaker 3: at the center of this case, named Kaylee. She testified
- 3:07Speaker 3: that she started watching YouTube at age six. At age nine,
- 3:10Speaker 3: she was on Instagram. At one point she spent sixteen
- 3:13Speaker 3: hours in one day on Instagram. Kaylee claims that features
- 3:17Speaker 3: like push notifications and beauty filters got her hooked and
- 3:21Speaker 3: led to body image issues, anxiety, and depression. So during
- 3:24Speaker 3: this seven week trial, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg defended safety
- 3:28Speaker 3: features on the apps. Metta and YouTube say that they
- 3:31Speaker 3: disagree with the verdict and will appeal. Metta also says
- 3:36Speaker 3: it will appeal a separate three hundred and seventy five
- 3:38Speaker 3: million dollar case in New Mexico last week over child
- 3:42Speaker 3: exploitation online.
- 3:44Speaker 1: Record high temperatures continue to fall across the West, with
- 3:47Speaker 1: twenty to thirty five degrees above average expanding over the weekend.
- 3:51Speaker 1: The record heat will be over the Southwest, with more
- 3:53Speaker 1: daily records possible for places like Phoenix, Las Vegas, Sacramento,
- 3:57Speaker 1: Salt Lake City, and Denver. Meanwhile, well, for the first
- 4:00Speaker 1: time since twenty thirteen, in Denver, water restrictions are in
- 4:03Speaker 1: place after a warm, dry winter. The water company says
- 4:07Speaker 1: snowpacks are at or near record lows. The restrictions include
- 4:11Speaker 1: limits on outdoor watering and restaurants only serving water by request.
- 4:15Speaker 1: Democrats have won a special election in Florida this week,
- 4:18Speaker 1: right in President Trump's backyard. Forty year old Emily Gregory
- 4:22Speaker 1: won a state House seat in the district that includes
- 4:24Speaker 1: mar A Lago. She focused her campaign on affordability, and
- 4:27Speaker 1: she spoke with ABC News.
- 4:28Speaker 4: Live that was the primary thing we heard It's just
- 4:31Speaker 4: that the lack of affordable housing property insurance is a
- 4:35Speaker 4: real crisis in the state. Rights have skyrocketed over the
- 4:38Speaker 4: last five six years, and we are all really struggling
- 4:42Speaker 4: to keep up. The first time buyer is having trouble
- 4:45Speaker 4: purchasing a home, and seniors are having trouble staying in
- 4:49Speaker 4: their home.
- 4:49Speaker 1: She added she did not focus on President Trump at
- 4:52Speaker 1: all during her campaign because voters were most concerned with
- 4:54Speaker 1: local kitchen table issues. Republicans have blamed her surprising victory
- 4:59Speaker 1: on low voter time turnout. Let's get into what to watch.
- 5:02Speaker 1: We have all been following this shocking case of a
- 5:05Speaker 1: doctor in Hawaii accused of trying to kill his wife
- 5:08Speaker 1: on a hiking trail. It's now turned into a high
- 5:11Speaker 1: stakes courtroom drama. Impacts by Nightline takes you inside with
- 5:14Speaker 1: exclusive interviews and expert analysis. Stream Edge of Death, Three
- 5:19Speaker 1: Ways to Kill on Disney Plus and on Hulu. And
- 5:22Speaker 1: a legend on and Off the Court. Pat Summit built
- 5:25Speaker 1: a dynasty at Tennessee, winning eight national championships over thirty
- 5:30Speaker 1: eight years as head coach, but her legacy was the
- 5:33Speaker 1: impact that she made off the court. Now a new
- 5:35Speaker 1: documentary tells her story from her player's one hundred percent
- 5:39Speaker 1: graduation rate to a diagnosis with dementia at fifty nine
- 5:42Speaker 1: years old. Watch Breaking Glass the Pat Summit story right
- 5:46Speaker 1: now on Disney Plus and on Hulu. We have much
- 5:48Speaker 1: more of what you need to know now to take
- 6:01Speaker 1: three the stories that you'll be talking about this weekend.
- 6:04Speaker 1: At number three, the First Lady's Special guest at the
- 6:06Speaker 1: White House, a humanoid robot walking alongside her into a
- 6:11Speaker 1: meeting about high tech education and safety. The robot even
- 6:14Speaker 1: introduced itself to the crowd, repeating its welcome in ten
- 6:18Speaker 1: other languages. It's the product of a California robotics company.
- 6:23Speaker 1: At number two, an unexpected arrest in Georgia after police
- 6:26Speaker 1: found a suspected burglar hiding inside a refrigerator. An upstairs
- 6:31Speaker 1: neighbor called police after hearing banging from an apartment that
- 6:34Speaker 1: was supposed to be vacant. The man is now facing
- 6:37Speaker 1: burglary charges. And finally, at number one, a special delivery
- 6:42Speaker 1: for a seventy eight year old food delivery worker. After
- 6:45Speaker 1: Richard Polly delivered food to a Tennessee woman, she started
- 6:48Speaker 1: a fundraiser to help him retire. She raised nearly a
- 6:52Speaker 1: million dollars, but Polly says he's gonna keep working because
- 6:55Speaker 1: he likes to keep busy. Now to some quick hits.
- 6:59Speaker 1: Other stories that we're following this weekend. A brother and
- 7:01Speaker 1: sister have been charged in connection with an explosive device
- 7:04Speaker 1: found outside McDill Air Force Base in Tampa. The base
- 7:07Speaker 1: is home to Central Command, which is directing the war
- 7:10Speaker 1: against ISIS. The device did not detony, but officials say
- 7:14Speaker 1: it was a viable bomb and potentially deadly. They say
- 7:17Speaker 1: it was planted by twenty year old Alan Zang, who
- 7:20Speaker 1: then fled to China. His sister was arrested, accused of
- 7:23Speaker 1: helping him cover up that alleged crime. The star of
- 7:26Speaker 1: the TV series Reacher will not be charged. After fighting
- 7:30Speaker 1: with his neighbor, Alan Richson was riding a motorcycle when
- 7:32Speaker 1: a neighbor stood in his way and accused him of
- 7:35Speaker 1: riding dangerously. In a video posted by TMC, he is
- 7:38Speaker 1: seen punching the man, but police now say that Richon
- 7:42Speaker 1: acted in self defense. And an eleven year old boy
- 7:46Speaker 1: was being honored for his extraordinary bravery after saving his
- 7:49Speaker 1: friend's life during a school shooting in Minneapolis. Victor Greenwalk
- 7:54Speaker 1: received the Young Heroes Award from the Congressional Matter of
- 7:56Speaker 1: Honor Society. He was shot in the back when he
- 8:00Speaker 1: held a classmate with his own body. That classmate spoke
- 8:03Speaker 1: to us at the scene.
- 8:05Speaker 4: My friend got hit in the back.
- 8:08Speaker 1: Did he go to the hospital?
- 8:09Speaker 4: Yeah, he went to the hospital. What went through your
- 8:11Speaker 4: mind when we saw that? I was super scared for him,
- 8:15Speaker 4: But I think now he's okay.
- 8:17Speaker 1: The Medal of Honor Society said Victor's courage and selflessness
- 8:20Speaker 1: became a powerful symbol of hope and humanity for a
- 8:24Speaker 1: community in crisis. And finally, before you go, a former
- 8:28Speaker 1: janitor is returning to the hospital she wants cleaned, but
- 8:31Speaker 1: this time as a doctor. Doctor Shane Taylor Allen shared
- 8:34Speaker 1: a video showing the moment she found out that she's
- 8:37Speaker 1: hated to work at Yale School of Medicine. She worked
- 8:39Speaker 1: as a janitor there ten years ago. Shaye was raised
- 8:43Speaker 1: by a single mother in New Haven. She says she's
- 8:45Speaker 1: ready to get back to the community that helped shape her.
- 8:48Speaker 1: Every single person new Haven, Connecticut right now is my family.
- 8:51Speaker 1: Everybody that walks into that hospital because I was born there,
- 8:54Speaker 1: and I'm so excited to serve the him she was
- 8:57Speaker 1: born there too. Shay says that caring for her sickness
- 9:00Speaker 1: mother and seeing staff advocate for patients inspired her to
- 9:03Speaker 1: pursue medicine. And that is what you need to know.
