Latest / Birdland Territory / The latest Adley Rutschman trade speculation
Transcript
- 0:07Speaker 1: Well, the final game of the series in Boston. That
- 0:09Speaker 1: felt like a big one for the Orioles that they
- 0:11Speaker 1: had to have after losing the first two. They did
- 0:15Speaker 1: get it behind Kyle Bradish. We're going to touch on
- 0:18Speaker 1: that a lot in this show. Here today, welcome into
- 0:21Speaker 1: the latest Birdland Territory with Steve, Tim and Brad at
- 0:24Speaker 1: the top. Today we're going to talk about the latest
- 0:27Speaker 1: trade I guess rumor slash speculation. And this was all
- 0:32Speaker 1: started with the ESPN, the Four Letter Network, when they
- 0:35Speaker 1: ranked badly on their list of top one hundred trade
- 0:39Speaker 1: candidates for this trade deadline number fifteen. It came out
- 0:42Speaker 1: of nowhere because their first two times they published a
- 0:45Speaker 1: list of one hundred, he wasn't even on it. Then
- 0:48Speaker 1: he gets on it at fifteen. So that was curious
- 0:52Speaker 1: to some of us following that. And Tim, you've been
- 0:55Speaker 1: following it pretty closely, and why don't you start here.
- 0:58Speaker 1: We don't know what that means, but it might mean
- 1:01Speaker 1: the ools are at least open to listening, which it
- 1:03Speaker 1: seems like that's the job of the front office. Why
- 1:06Speaker 1: would you not listen on anti player, There's a big
- 1:09Speaker 1: gap between listening and making a deal. We'll see where
- 1:13Speaker 1: any of this leads.
- 1:15Speaker 2: And we've brought up this speculation probably a couple of
- 1:18Speaker 2: weeks ago on an episode guys, and I think we
- 1:21Speaker 2: were all unanimous and saying, you gotta listen, but you're
- 1:24Speaker 2: not actively shopping Adlei Rutchman. But I did find it
- 1:29Speaker 2: very interesting that yesterday, two days ago, Jeff Passon, who's
- 1:34Speaker 2: as well respected a national MLB insider as they come,
- 1:39Speaker 2: his first two editions of this top one hundred list
- 1:42Speaker 2: did not have Adley Rutchman, and then pretty much immediately
- 1:46Speaker 2: following the Oriole seven game winning streak to get them
- 1:50Speaker 2: back in the hunt, Adley Rutchman comes in at number fifteen,
- 1:54Speaker 2: and one tiny part of the blurb to me, that
- 1:58Speaker 2: was the headliner. Guys, He's a free agent after next season.
- 2:01Speaker 2: Baltimore has Samuel Bisseillo locked up, locked up long term,
- 2:05Speaker 2: and there's almost no chance of the sides coming together
- 2:08Speaker 2: on a long term deal. That was kind of my
- 2:11Speaker 2: biggest takeaway. And he handicaps the top twenty five guys
- 2:16Speaker 2: on his list. He lists Adley Rutchman's chance of being
- 2:19Speaker 2: traded at thirty percent.
- 2:21Speaker 3: Here's how I see it.
- 2:22Speaker 2: They're back in the mix and they're three games back
- 2:25Speaker 2: out of the wild card hunt. I think it would
- 2:28Speaker 2: be one heck of a needle to thread for michae
- 2:32Speaker 2: Elias to trade Adley Rutchman while buying while still in
- 2:37Speaker 2: the mix and get the major league caliber players back
- 2:42Speaker 2: in return. I just think Adley brad he's second on
- 2:45Speaker 2: the team in RBIs this offense, which is extremely banged
- 2:49Speaker 2: up right now, and we'll get into that more later.
- 2:51Speaker 3: In the episode.
- 2:52Speaker 2: If you're gonna make a run at this thing and
- 2:55Speaker 2: try to get back to playing October baseball, assuming you're buying,
- 2:59Speaker 2: you're probably don't want Adli Ruchman there.
- 3:02Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean one hundred percent.
- 3:03Speaker 5: I think it's it's like you said, it's just kind
- 3:05Speaker 5: of surprising that it popped up out of nowhere.
- 3:07Speaker 4: So there's got to be some rumbling somewhere in the.
- 3:10Speaker 5: Grapevine there that they for them to actually even bring
- 3:14Speaker 5: this up and write about it.
- 3:15Speaker 4: So it's definitely interesting.
- 3:16Speaker 5: But like you said, if this team just worked their
- 3:18Speaker 5: way back into the wildcard mix for real this time
- 3:21Speaker 5: where they crept up right below five hundred and to
- 3:24Speaker 5: kind of think that Adlie gets traded here is just
- 3:26Speaker 5: kind of crazy. It's just kind of a wild speculation
- 3:30Speaker 5: at this point. I would say I was kind of
- 3:32Speaker 5: classified as that, but obviously there's something there, and for
- 3:34Speaker 5: them to even have it at thirty percent, to me,
- 3:37Speaker 5: it's just kind of a crazy number. And it's just
- 3:39Speaker 5: kind of when you look at the extension of Kyle Bradish,
- 3:41Speaker 5: you have Samuel Pasila locked up for so many years.
- 3:44Speaker 5: Maybe they were else are trying to make a play
- 3:46Speaker 5: here where they're trying to extend this window to five
- 3:48Speaker 5: to seven years along the way, and if they don't
- 3:51Speaker 5: see ADLEI fitting in that five to seven year window,
- 3:54Speaker 5: maybe if they get a deal that blows their minds
- 3:56Speaker 5: right now and they get the major league talent that
- 3:58Speaker 5: they're kind of expecting to get him, it is something
- 4:01Speaker 5: you have to look at. So it's definitely an interesting speculation,
- 4:04Speaker 5: but at this point, but it just it would be
- 4:06Speaker 5: wild to me if they were actually able to pull
- 4:08Speaker 5: the trigger at this point of the season, and with
- 4:11Speaker 5: the time dwindling here before the trade deadline.
- 4:15Speaker 1: We should point out this speculation comes at a time
- 4:18Speaker 1: when Adlie Rutchman is on the injured list with the
- 4:21Speaker 1: left wrist. It's his third trip, and does that turn
- 4:25Speaker 1: off the potential sooner who knows the very different than
- 4:28Speaker 1: obliques which bothered him. I believe last year you've had
- 4:32Speaker 1: an ankle, a concussion, and the left wrist, and so
- 4:37Speaker 1: it all are kind of strange, fluky things that just happened.
- 4:41Speaker 1: It's not like he's been injury prone this year, but
- 4:43Speaker 1: it is three trips. And I'll add this caveat maybe
- 4:47Speaker 1: this is signaling that if he doesn't get dealt at
- 4:50Speaker 1: the deadline, I think all three of us feel the
- 4:52Speaker 1: odds are longer that happening that he'll be an Oriel
- 4:55Speaker 1: after August third. No one can guarantee you. We'll see
- 4:57Speaker 1: how it plays out, but maybe that means this winner
- 5:01Speaker 1: is push or go time for the Orioles and actally,
- 5:04Speaker 1: either you're gonna get a deal or there might be
- 5:06Speaker 1: a trade, and then then the winner they can figure
- 5:10Speaker 1: out where you're going with catching Can we sign this guy?
- 5:13Speaker 1: If we can't, maybe we trade him. Someone will get
- 5:16Speaker 1: a full year and it brings more back, and so
- 5:19Speaker 1: of course that's leading into the labor situation. So this
- 5:22Speaker 1: whole thing is there's just nothing really clear here right now.
- 5:26Speaker 4: Yeah, definitely, definitely not.
- 5:28Speaker 5: Yeah, it's it's a it's a complex puzzle to kind
- 5:32Speaker 5: of put together, like you're saying, Steve, with the possible lockout,
- 5:36Speaker 5: the trade deadline coming up, I think it would make
- 5:38Speaker 5: more sense to wait for the winter and then from
- 5:41Speaker 5: there you just you got to see how the labor
- 5:42Speaker 5: agreements go and.
- 5:43Speaker 4: All that kind of stuff.
- 5:44Speaker 5: But if if you don't feel he's gonna be there
- 5:46Speaker 5: long time, the winter, to me makes way more sense
- 5:49Speaker 5: to kind of get a package together, see what team
- 5:51Speaker 5: you could send him to if you don't see him
- 5:53Speaker 5: fitting in this long term picture, which it kind of
- 5:56Speaker 5: seems like Michael Oas is trying to put together here,
- 5:58Speaker 5: not just trying to figure out what they're gonna do
- 5:59Speaker 5: for the new two years, but more of a beyond
- 6:02Speaker 5: that kind of frame picture that he's trying to put together.
- 6:07Speaker 2: Yeah, that's how I see it, guys, where if you're buying,
- 6:10Speaker 2: if you're going for it, I would like Adley Rutchman
- 6:13Speaker 2: to remain on this roster. But moving forward, if you
- 6:16Speaker 2: take passings reporting as true, then yeah, I think you
- 6:21Speaker 2: got to move him in the off season because you
- 6:24Speaker 2: don't want him to walk for nothing. Obviously, the Orioles
- 6:27Speaker 2: have every single intention of going for it again in
- 6:31Speaker 2: twenty twenty seven, So it's not going to be a
- 6:33Speaker 2: situation where you anticipate selling him at the deadline as
- 6:37Speaker 2: a rental. I think this is definitely a huge storyline
- 6:40Speaker 2: for the off season to come, and boys, it's set
- 6:43Speaker 2: to be a very wild and wacky off season just
- 6:46Speaker 2: with the labor of it a whole.
- 6:47Speaker 1: Yeah, just never dull around here. I think also there
- 6:52Speaker 1: might be in the game, what is Adley Rutchman. He
- 6:57Speaker 1: had two off years, he had injuries, and now he's
- 7:01Speaker 1: back at an all star level. And as hope he
- 7:04Speaker 1: has to seven to fifty, it's not eight to fifty.
- 7:07Speaker 1: His catching has been really good. His framing is its
- 7:09Speaker 1: top of the game. The pitchers love throwing to him.
- 7:12Speaker 1: He's all star caliber. That's if you have an all
- 7:15Speaker 1: star caliber catcher, you're ahead of most of the league.
- 7:19Speaker 1: But is he the superstar player that it once looked
- 7:23Speaker 1: like he would be. There's a there's a middle ground
- 7:25Speaker 1: in there somewhere where he probably fits in.
- 7:28Speaker 2: Well, Steve, I think the reality and I was diving
- 7:31Speaker 2: into the numbers yesterday on the show on one O
- 7:33Speaker 2: five seven the Fan. You look at his year this year,
- 7:36Speaker 2: it's only played in sixty seven games, so he's missed
- 7:40Speaker 2: a third of the season, and not all of that
- 7:42Speaker 2: has just been il he's been sitting a lot of games.
- 7:46Speaker 2: That was a big plan and point of emphasis to
- 7:49Speaker 2: try and keep Adley Rutchman healthy this year, and they've
- 7:52Speaker 2: really lessened his workload. He's caught forty nine games. This
- 7:56Speaker 2: is the number that really shocked me. Guys, Adley Rutchman
- 7:59Speaker 2: is only caught three straight days twice all year long.
- 8:04Speaker 2: He's only called three straight days. Samuel Bissio. He has
- 8:08Speaker 2: a stretch where he's caught four straight days three straight
- 8:11Speaker 2: days two other times. So they've done everything they can
- 8:16Speaker 2: do to keep Badly upright and healthy, but unfortunately it
- 8:20Speaker 2: just hasn't been the case.
- 8:21Speaker 3: And look the concussion one that that's just free clock.
- 8:24Speaker 2: That's really unfortunate, but it's a big factor for any
- 8:28Speaker 2: team that's acquiring Adley Rutchman.
- 8:30Speaker 1: For sure, interesting times. As we said, never tell around here.
- 8:36Speaker 1: That's a good thing for shows like this, I guess

- 10:08Speaker 1: Quick note from Baseball America's latest Top thirty list before
- 10:12Speaker 1: we get into the red Sox series. Four oriol draft
- 10:16Speaker 1: picks are now ranked by Baseball American and updated list.
- 10:19Speaker 1: Eric Booth Junior is number one. He's the number one
- 10:21Speaker 1: oriol prospect their first draft around draft pick that they
- 10:24Speaker 1: just signed. Tie head NC State outfielders ranked ninth on
- 10:28Speaker 1: this list. Kevin Roberts, Junior, Mississippi High school outfielder with
- 10:33Speaker 1: the loud tools is sixteenth, and right hand to pitcher
- 10:37Speaker 1: Dom Vogel of University of Kansas is thirtieth. So four
- 10:41Speaker 1: Orioles moved right into the top thirty out of the draft.
- 10:43Speaker 1: And Eric Booth Junior, by the way, in the top
- 10:45Speaker 1: one hundred is number sixty four. He's the highest ranked
- 10:48Speaker 1: oriole currently on the Baseball America Top one hundred. So guys,
- 10:53Speaker 1: let's get into this game. Kyle Bradish on Wednesday night,
- 10:57Speaker 1: game two of the doubleheader, he did his thing. Man
- 11:01Speaker 1: that wasn't Bradish at the absolute top of his game,
- 11:05Speaker 1: but he was in control throughout. I never thought he
- 11:08Speaker 1: was giving up more than the one run he was
- 11:10Speaker 1: giving up. It just felt like they could have pitched eight,
- 11:13Speaker 1: nine to ten and they wouldn't have got much off him.
- 11:15Speaker 1: Last night, What did you guys see from his outing
- 11:18Speaker 1: in a very important five to one oriel win.
- 11:21Speaker 5: Yeah, he's just becoming that a stopper that they kind
- 11:24Speaker 5: of always needed throughout the season. Between him and Trevor Rogers,
- 11:28Speaker 5: right now, you have two guys that you have confidence
- 11:30Speaker 5: who are going to win every time they go out there.
- 11:31Speaker 5: And to me, it was just the two seamer he
- 11:34Speaker 5: was running in on right ees, he was front hipping
- 11:37Speaker 5: at the lefties and just using it as such a weapon.
- 11:39Speaker 5: Jim Palmer talked about it multiple times that pitch has
- 11:42Speaker 5: been such a difference maker with the left to right
- 11:44Speaker 5: movement of it.
- 11:46Speaker 4: Everything else he throws.
- 11:47Speaker 5: His fastball has that cut, like we talked about, everything
- 11:50Speaker 5: moves right to left. His slider, his curveballs more twelve
- 11:52Speaker 5: to six, but it still has that little bit of
- 11:54Speaker 5: right to left movement, and with that two seamer, it
- 11:57Speaker 5: just it just cannot be a comfortable bat for anybody
- 12:00Speaker 5: left these righties, I don't care who you put up there.
- 12:03Speaker 4: His that patch just.
- 12:04Speaker 5: Must be really uncomfortable. You know, the curveball on the
- 12:06Speaker 5: slider are there. But he was just getting a hit
- 12:08Speaker 5: with the fastball. And if you don't get on that
- 12:10Speaker 5: first pitch, you know you have to deal with those
- 12:12Speaker 5: breaking balls after.
- 12:13Speaker 4: So for me, he was just.
- 12:14Speaker 5: Being super aggressive, throwing tons of strikes. I think those
- 12:17Speaker 5: first seventy five pitches that I think they said sixty
- 12:19Speaker 5: seven percent pitches in the strike.
- 12:21Speaker 4: Zone, and that's a high number for him.
- 12:23Speaker 5: He's usually thrown a lot of pitches out of his
- 12:25Speaker 5: own but if he's throwing strikes at that rate, good
- 12:27Speaker 5: luck to hitters.
- 12:28Speaker 4: And he just showed it last night.
- 12:29Speaker 5: He's just being aggressive, attacking these guys and then using
- 12:32Speaker 5: this stuff for there when he got ahead.
- 12:35Speaker 2: Yeah, guys, it's hard to call a game a must
- 12:39Speaker 2: win when they're still quite a lot of games to go.
- 12:42Speaker 3: But that was a you better not.
- 12:44Speaker 2: Lose it type of game because if you would have
- 12:46Speaker 2: lost it, you would have felled the five games back
- 12:49Speaker 2: and all that good will of that seven game winning
- 12:51Speaker 2: streak getting swept by the Red Sox. That would have
- 12:53Speaker 2: been really, really rough, But Kyle Braddish should give him
- 12:57Speaker 2: a ton of credit for a multitude of reasons. That's
- 13:00Speaker 2: been a team that has given him a lot of
- 13:02Speaker 2: trouble over his career. Heading into last night, he was
- 13:06Speaker 2: one in six with the six seven five ERA and
- 13:08Speaker 2: ten starts against the Red Sox. In three starts at
- 13:12Speaker 2: Fenway Park, he had given up fifteen runs over just
- 13:16Speaker 2: ten innings. But Bradish, we know walks have been an
- 13:19Speaker 2: issue for him at times this year, a lot of
- 13:22Speaker 2: starts for him, only one walk last night. The slider
- 13:25Speaker 2: and curveball were really strong. And also, how was this
- 13:28Speaker 2: going to look? Because he was coming off in eleven
- 13:31Speaker 2: day layoff, it had been a while since Kyle Bradish
- 13:34Speaker 2: was on the mound, and add on top of that,
- 13:37Speaker 2: although it's a good problem to have the really long
- 13:40Speaker 2: first inning where gosh, it was probably a thirty minute
- 13:43Speaker 2: forty minute first inning, so it had been a while
- 13:45Speaker 2: since he even had thrown his warm up pitches since
- 13:48Speaker 2: that point, and all he did was deliver one two,
- 13:50Speaker 2: three shutdown inning, which unfortunately avoided Dean Kramer a lot
- 13:55Speaker 2: in the game one of the doubleheader was.
- 13:58Speaker 1: He nine pitches, one unfour hit, six innings early in control.
- 14:02Speaker 1: You gave the career numbers to which he overcame, plus
- 14:05Speaker 1: the eleven days rest which he overcame last six starts
- 14:09Speaker 1: as ra for the Orioles two oh three. Bradish. By
- 14:11Speaker 1: the way, we'll be celebrated Friday afternoon at Oriel Park
- 14:14Speaker 1: at Camden Yards with a press conference, uh to announce
- 14:18Speaker 1: officially the ninety million dollar deal. And you know, celebrate
- 14:22Speaker 1: this guy who's just so consistent. He's ninety four every game.
- 14:26Speaker 1: Occasionally you see a little more, but you can count
- 14:28Speaker 1: on it. Yeah, last night it was exactly fifty percent fastballs,
- 14:33Speaker 1: fifty percent secondaries. And Brad I found this interesting. On
- 14:37Speaker 1: the data we can look up the two seam is
- 14:40Speaker 1: thrown mostly to righties to pound that thing in against lefties.
- 14:44Speaker 1: Last night all seventeen of his four seamers, all seventeen
- 14:49Speaker 1: were against left handed batters, not one to a righty.
- 14:52Speaker 1: Why would that be do you.
- 14:54Speaker 5: Think, I would say, especially at Firmway Park, you want
- 14:58Speaker 5: lefties to pull the ball. So with this cutting action
- 15:01Speaker 5: on the fastball, you're going to try to run that
- 15:03Speaker 5: in on lefties and really make them hitted to the
- 15:06Speaker 5: large part of the ballpark. And if you get beat
- 15:08Speaker 5: out there, the guy obviously put a good swing on it,
- 15:10Speaker 5: but it makes sense that he's throwing that pitch, especially
- 15:13Speaker 5: a f nWay, But just in general, I just think
- 15:15Speaker 5: it's a really hard pitch for lefties to get extended on.
- 15:19Speaker 5: And when I say get extended on, just means a
- 15:21Speaker 5: lot of hitters want the ball out over the plate.
- 15:23Speaker 5: And when we're able to run the ball in on guys,
- 15:26Speaker 5: and especially with that cutting action where okay, it looks
- 15:28Speaker 5: middle in but it ends up on the really inside
- 15:31Speaker 5: part of the plate, he's just able to pound that
- 15:33Speaker 5: in on lefty. So it makes a lot of sense
- 15:35Speaker 5: to throw his four seamer to lefties and not so
- 15:38Speaker 5: much the righties, because when you miss with the rights,
- 15:40Speaker 5: it almost turns into a cutter, and for a righty
- 15:43Speaker 5: pitcher throwing to a righty hitter, the cutter pitch becomes
- 15:46Speaker 5: kind of a home run pitch, is what I've always
- 15:48Speaker 5: been told in my career. So it makes a lot
- 15:50Speaker 5: of sense to jam that four seamer in on him,
- 15:53Speaker 5: and then he's got that back foot breaking ball and
- 15:55Speaker 5: the curveball, and I mean, it's just good luck. And
- 15:57Speaker 5: if you're able to jam that four seamer in on lefties,
- 16:00Speaker 5: you could sneak a sinker away because the guys have
- 16:03Speaker 5: seen everything coming in coming in coming in. You throw
- 16:05Speaker 5: that sinker away. Now they're way off and it just
- 16:07Speaker 5: creates a big problem. He's a tough pitcher, I mean,
- 16:10Speaker 5: I just like I said before, it's just I can't
- 16:12Speaker 5: imagine any of bat's being fun against Kyle Brad's, especially
- 16:15Speaker 5: when he's punding the strike zone and getting ahead of guys.
- 16:19Speaker 4: Greg.
- 16:20Speaker 2: Kyle's a bulldog, and I'm sure just knowing him, he
- 16:23Speaker 2: probably wasn't even thinking about those career numbers, but just
- 16:26Speaker 2: reading them, it kind of brings me back to the
- 16:28Speaker 2: episode with Zach Britton, right where I forget was Peter Borges.
- 16:32Speaker 2: You know, he brought up a guy that had good
- 16:34Speaker 2: numbers against him. But there's thirty teams in baseball, and then, inevitably,
- 16:39Speaker 2: I'm sure Brad, there was a team that gave you
- 16:41Speaker 2: a lot of trouble. Like, does that ever go through
- 16:44Speaker 2: your head or a ballpark where you particularly struggle in
- 16:47Speaker 2: like he did at Fenway Park prior to that, do
- 16:50Speaker 2: pictures think about that at all?
- 16:52Speaker 5: Not a ton I would say you might think about
- 16:55Speaker 5: it like maybe before the series starts, but when you're
- 16:58Speaker 5: out there, all that kind of goes out the windows.
- 17:00Speaker 5: So it's definitely a thought that you're like you probably have, like, man,
- 17:03Speaker 5: I just can't figure out this lineup or this team
- 17:06Speaker 5: or this stadium. It might creep in your head in
- 17:08Speaker 5: the beginning of this series, but when you're out there,
- 17:10Speaker 5: you get your game plan once you leave the bullpen
- 17:13Speaker 5: there after he gets done warming up, it's really not
- 17:15Speaker 5: a thought that comes in. But I'm sure it's something
- 17:17Speaker 5: he's thought about, and I'm sure he's been told these numbers,
- 17:20Speaker 5: and you know, whether he reads it somewhere or sees
- 17:22Speaker 5: it or he knows.
- 17:23Speaker 4: That in the back of his mind.
- 17:24Speaker 5: So to go out there and put up the outing
- 17:26Speaker 5: had yesterday, it's just a It's really good on him
- 17:30Speaker 5: because he was able to flush it and go out there,
- 17:32Speaker 5: and especially with the he's got that fat wallet now
- 17:34Speaker 5: in about his back pocket after signing that contract. To
- 17:37Speaker 5: go out there and have the outing he had is
- 17:39Speaker 5: just it was awesome to watch.
- 17:43Speaker 1: Listen, there's pressure every night in Major League Baseball, but
- 17:45Speaker 1: here's a guy eleven days rast who knows what that's
- 17:48Speaker 1: going to bring just got the big contract or O's
- 17:52Speaker 1: had to have it. Yeah, it was maybe the most
- 17:54Speaker 1: pressurized game of the year for any Oriel to pitch,
- 17:57Speaker 1: and there couldn't have been a better guy to pitch it. Bradish.
- 18:00Speaker 1: I was surprised him pitch game one of that doubleheader.
- 18:03Speaker 1: I think that's the way I would have done it.
- 18:05Speaker 1: And when I saw Kramer, I wasn't disappointed because Deane's
- 18:08Speaker 1: a good pitcher too, but I just thought, your best guy,
- 18:11Speaker 1: why why not pitch him in Game one? I'm sure
- 18:13Speaker 1: the Oils had a reason for that, and that's how
- 18:16Speaker 1: they did it. So let's the guy with a long
- 18:19Speaker 1: name here, one of the longest done Major League Baseball history,
- 18:22Speaker 1: Christian and Carnacion. Strand comes up. There's five for eleven
- 18:27Speaker 1: hits two home runs in this series. By the way,
- 18:28Speaker 1: the Oriols hit two in the series. He hit them both,
- 18:32Speaker 1: and he doesn't when it hit him, they say, as
- 18:34Speaker 1: the scouts say, when he hits one, it stays hit.
- 18:37Speaker 1: I mean, this was a big performance by this guy
- 18:40Speaker 1: who's been just quietly putting up numbers all year for Norfolk.
- 18:44Speaker 5: Yeah, you know what, it's a I think it's a
- 18:46Speaker 5: great credit to him to just kind of keeping his
- 18:49Speaker 5: head down and playing at Triple A, never knowing when
- 18:51Speaker 5: an opportunity was going to come. With the way Blaisee
- 18:54Speaker 5: Alexander was playing in the way. They love having Kobe
- 18:56Speaker 5: Mayo out there against lufties, especially, but he's been on
- 18:59Speaker 5: the all year. You just never know when the opportunity
- 19:02Speaker 5: is gonna come. And he got his name called and
- 19:04Speaker 5: he really stepped up this series. He did a great job.
- 19:07Speaker 5: Balls that he can handle out over the plate, he
- 19:10Speaker 5: crushed them, and with those two home runs, the one
- 19:12Speaker 5: was a big time home run to center field there
- 19:14Speaker 5: at Fenway Park. That is not a small part of
- 19:16Speaker 5: the park to go out at, and.
- 19:18Speaker 4: He just did a great job.
- 19:18Speaker 5: And I think it's just really a good testament to him,
- 19:21Speaker 5: and honestly, the guys at Triple A, the managing the
- 19:24Speaker 5: staff there down at Triple A kind of making sure
- 19:26Speaker 5: these guys just kind of keep their head down, do
- 19:28Speaker 5: your work, and when your name is called, you go
- 19:30Speaker 5: up there. You're not just going to sit the bench.
- 19:32Speaker 5: He came up and played right away, so it's not
- 19:34Speaker 5: like you're just going up there as a guy who
- 19:36Speaker 5: might get in the game. He was thrown right into
- 19:38Speaker 5: the fire of a big series up at Fenway Park,
- 19:40Speaker 5: and he did a great job, and it was awesome
- 19:42Speaker 5: to see him step up and really contribute the series.
- 19:46Speaker 2: It's funny, guys, like we were just talking about this
- 19:49Speaker 2: last episode. It's very on brand with this year's Orioles club.
- 19:54Speaker 2: You've just seen guys come out of nowhere contribute for them,
- 19:58Speaker 2: and Christian and Karnasi owned stre in game one of
- 20:01Speaker 2: that doubleheader, the three hit performance, the solo homer, he
- 20:04Speaker 2: drove in another run in another at bet and he
- 20:07Speaker 2: was this close for a four for four, by the way,
- 20:09Speaker 2: hitting that fourth ball right up the middle. The defender
- 20:12Speaker 2: made a great play. But you can also look in
- 20:16Speaker 2: game two of the doubleheader where Jonathan Rodriguez, he got
- 20:20Speaker 2: called up and boom, he's the dah against the lefty
- 20:25Speaker 2: and he ended up driving in a run in the
- 20:27Speaker 2: first inning of that game. So got immediate contributions out
- 20:31Speaker 2: of him as well.
- 20:33Speaker 1: It's one reason you sign those some people call him
- 20:37Speaker 1: and I don't like this term. Four A guys, guys
- 20:40Speaker 1: who have a little bit of major league time and
- 20:42Speaker 1: they're a veteran at TRIPAA, and they don't excite the
- 20:45Speaker 1: fan base because they're not a ranked prospect who's twenty one,
- 20:49Speaker 1: but you might need him at some point. So that's
- 20:51Speaker 1: the Rodriguez and Strand exactly are those kind of guys
- 20:55Speaker 1: who are important in Christian and Carnassi on Strands Cees
- 21:00Speaker 1: that we might call him from here on out really
- 21:03Speaker 1: got the job done, and it was impressive to see
- 21:06Speaker 1: a veteran who who a moment wasn't too big for
- 21:09Speaker 1: him because he've been around the big leagues. He has
- 21:12Speaker 1: enough experience to handle it, and he did. Orioles got
- 21:15Speaker 1: a big win in Game two. We'll talk more about
- 21:18Speaker 1: that and some other topics coming up on Birdland Territory.

- 22:53Speaker 1: MLB dot compoint and app that the Orioles ended a
- 22:56Speaker 1: fifteen game losing streak for the second time in Team
- 22:59Speaker 1: hit Street. The first was on June seventeenth, nineteen ninety one.
- 23:04Speaker 1: Minnesota had won fifteenth straight. The Oil scored three in
- 23:07Speaker 1: the bottom of the ninth of Memorial Stadium, Randy Milligan
- 23:11Speaker 1: a walk off two run double and they won. And
- 23:14Speaker 1: then last night, as we taped this to day after
- 23:16Speaker 1: the Ools wrapped up in Boston, they ended not only
- 23:19Speaker 1: the Red Sox fifteen game overall win streak, which tied
- 23:22Speaker 1: their franchise record set in nineteen forty six, they had
- 23:25Speaker 1: won ten straight Division games. That streak ended two in
- 23:29Speaker 1: Game three. As an oriel fan watching the Boston series,
- 23:34Speaker 1: the Red Sox are very exuberant, and I think that
- 23:38Speaker 1: irks fans. I don't know if it erks players. We
- 23:42Speaker 1: can ask. We got one on the set here, Tim,
- 23:44Speaker 1: and we can ask them. But they're real exuberant. Okay,
- 23:47Speaker 1: they're rolling. They're fans to sell out. I get you
- 23:50Speaker 1: get caught up in it and you can't ask them
- 23:52Speaker 1: to be robots out there. But I'll just say the
- 23:54Speaker 1: other teams fans. I'm guessing if we could pull every
- 23:58Speaker 1: Oiel fan today, hello over the top of time. You
- 24:01Speaker 1: guys are really yucking it up out there.
- 24:05Speaker 5: Yeah, I think I think they're just kind of playing
- 24:07Speaker 5: off Wilson Contraras. I played with him at Chicago, and
- 24:10Speaker 5: he's just he's an exuberant player. He's gonna You're gonna
- 24:13Speaker 5: see his emotions good, bad, and different all the time.
- 24:16Speaker 5: And I think during this fifteen game stretch it was
- 24:19Speaker 5: obviously very very important for their season. I mean they
- 24:22Speaker 5: went from maybe the worst record in the AL to
- 24:25Speaker 5: now in the lead of the wildcard, which goes to
- 24:28Speaker 5: show how wacky this AL is right now. But I
- 24:31Speaker 5: think they're just kind of playing off him, and I
- 24:32Speaker 5: think he's just doing everything he can to kind of
- 24:35Speaker 5: show the extra And yes, it does irk you on
- 24:38Speaker 5: the other side. It's kind of one of those things
- 24:40Speaker 5: where it's this isn't the playoffs, this isn't you know,
- 24:43Speaker 5: this is the game in the middle of July. I
- 24:44Speaker 5: get it's exciting, and I think they were just playing
- 24:47Speaker 5: into like the fans excitement and everything. But I think
- 24:50Speaker 5: he did a good job of kind of just getting
- 24:51Speaker 5: them fired up. I mean, there was a point in
- 24:53Speaker 5: the game yesterday where he got I think he hit
- 24:55Speaker 5: the double. He turns around as he gets past first
- 24:58Speaker 5: base and he's yelling at the dugout let's go, let's go.
- 25:00Speaker 5: The crowd got into it, and to me watching that
- 25:03Speaker 5: as a former player, I'm thinking, oh, man, like, what's
- 25:06Speaker 5: gonna happen now that the crowd's starting to get back
- 25:08Speaker 5: into it? Even though the game was for nothing and
- 25:10Speaker 5: it felt like it was in hand. When the team's
- 25:12Speaker 5: on that much of a role, you're just thinking, Oh, no,
- 25:15Speaker 5: is this what's gonna kind of get them going? Because
- 25:18Speaker 5: I'm sure there was multiple games during the stretch where
- 25:20Speaker 5: they're down, but one little thing happens. Next thing you know,
- 25:23Speaker 5: they're taking the leader, they're right close to taking the league,
- 25:27Speaker 5: and all of a sudden, the crowd's getting excited.
- 25:28Speaker 4: They're starting to stand up.
- 25:30Speaker 5: But Kyle Bradish once again was just that bulldog and
- 25:32Speaker 5: just gave him no room to breathe at all last night.
- 25:35Speaker 5: And that's why I think he gets a ton of
- 25:36Speaker 5: credit for that.
- 25:38Speaker 3: Well, I'll go it the other way. I don't mind it.
- 25:41Speaker 2: I kind of like it, and I understand the old
- 25:43Speaker 2: school mentality Act like you've been there before, just round
- 25:46Speaker 2: the bases. I get all of that, and to me
- 25:49Speaker 2: and maybe I'm wrong, and Brad you know that more
- 25:52Speaker 2: than anybody, you know, playing against the guy. It kind
- 25:56Speaker 2: of started with Jose Baltista, like I feel like his
- 25:59Speaker 2: bat lip, and then you know, from that point on,
- 26:02Speaker 2: you've seen so much more of the theatrics of baseball
- 26:07Speaker 2: and it's really kind of exploded at this point. But guys,
- 26:10Speaker 2: I just think back to what was it a couple
- 26:12Speaker 2: of weeks ago, Samuel Besaio hitting that two run shot
- 26:16Speaker 2: and throwing the bat with two hands, and I thought
- 26:18Speaker 2: that was really cool. But sure, being the other side
- 26:21Speaker 2: of that, you're probably like, yeah, it was this twenty
- 26:23Speaker 2: one year old kid doing like I get it.
- 26:26Speaker 3: But yeah, I think it's fun. I think it's fun
- 26:28Speaker 3: for the game.
- 26:29Speaker 5: I think through tim, I think it's lead. Baseball has
- 26:32Speaker 5: definitely leaned into that more. I mean sure, so the
- 26:35Speaker 5: fact that there's celebrations in the dugout that like the
- 26:38Speaker 5: rookie of myself is just like what is going on?
- 26:41Speaker 4: But it's it's fun for the fans. The guys obviously enjoyed.
- 26:45Speaker 5: I remember a couple of years ago obviously with the
- 26:47Speaker 5: you know the I think the Orioles had the hose
- 26:49Speaker 5: thing that they were doing in the dug.
- 26:50Speaker 1: Out the bong.
- 26:51Speaker 3: It was great.
- 26:52Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, the fans love it, so it's it's it's
- 26:55Speaker 5: one of those things where I have to, you know,
- 26:57Speaker 5: kind of check myself with that stuff too, because you
- 26:59Speaker 5: just guys enjoy themselves and it's allowed now in the game.
- 27:02Speaker 4: It's not an unwritten role anymore.
- 27:04Speaker 5: So it's just one of those things now that you
- 27:06Speaker 5: have to embrace as a fan and just kind of
- 27:08Speaker 5: your team can do the same thing. So it's I
- 27:10Speaker 5: get where you're coming from that tim for sure. Just
- 27:13Speaker 5: the old school player myself is like what in the
- 27:14Speaker 5: world is going on sometimes, but it is fun and
- 27:17Speaker 5: the fan bases love it, so it's one of those
- 27:19Speaker 5: things you just got to kind of lean into.
- 27:21Speaker 1: Definitely an age thing. The young guy here election more
- 27:25Speaker 1: than the veteran guy will use that term, you know,
- 27:30Speaker 1: just in an age where it's it's called Ripkin and
- 27:32Speaker 1: Murray just hit home runs and yeah, that's that's what
- 27:35Speaker 1: they did, and that's what some of us are used to.
- 27:38Speaker 1: But I understand it's a different time and there's a
- 27:41Speaker 1: lot more enthusiasm from the players. I just think the
- 27:44Speaker 1: picture ought to be able to do it too. If
- 27:46Speaker 1: the next time up he strikes can trare us out.
- 27:48Speaker 1: He ought to be able to do it jig around
- 27:50Speaker 1: the man and I'm not ridiculous, and that picture would
- 27:52Speaker 1: be called out by people and be like, well, did
- 27:55Speaker 1: the same thing the other guy just did well.
- 27:57Speaker 3: To be fair, you know, with the staredown, I can.
- 28:01Speaker 1: Only imagine, Yeah, okay, that's a little bit.
- 28:05Speaker 3: Yeah, it's that's a little little he's not.
- 28:08Speaker 1: Screaming in his dog first base line.
- 28:11Speaker 3: Yeah, back clips and.
- 28:16Speaker 1: Hey, let's get in another note or two on this
- 28:18Speaker 1: show before we run out of time. On Birdland Territory.
- 28:24Speaker 9: Big Bad Morning Show, Vinnie and Haney, Inside Access Live
- 28:28Speaker 9: on YouTube weekdays six till six, Search Baltimore one O

- 28:38Speaker 9: seven the Fan.
- 28:41Speaker 1: As we like Gunner in the Boston series five for
- 28:44Speaker 1: twelve four extra base hits, I think all four were
- 28:47Speaker 1: off left and maybe all four went to left or
- 28:49Speaker 1: left centers. I mean, it just were good signs everywhere
- 28:52Speaker 1: for him. This is it the takeoff We've said it
- 28:56Speaker 1: one hundred times now, and so maybe these were the
- 29:00Speaker 1: best signs of the year. Big series pressure on lefty pitchers.
- 29:04Speaker 1: He got it done.
- 29:06Speaker 5: Yeah, And I think, like I said, I had mentioned
- 29:08Speaker 5: last episode, the fact that he was using the center
- 29:11Speaker 5: and left field this series is encouraging sign. It starts
- 29:16Speaker 5: to mean that he'll be able to get to the
- 29:17Speaker 5: inside pitch and start pulling balls again. But I think
- 29:19Speaker 5: if he's able to use the opposite field, that just
- 29:22Speaker 5: makes him a much better hitter and kind of shows
- 29:24Speaker 5: what he can do with the extra base hits, because
- 29:27Speaker 5: anytime he hits the ball in the gap, there's a
- 29:28Speaker 5: chance for minimum double. But he showed the triple speed
- 29:31Speaker 5: last night, so there's just a lot more that can
- 29:33Speaker 5: happen when you're able to use all fields. Then he
- 29:36Speaker 5: starts getting his field again for the inside part of
- 29:38Speaker 5: the pitch, pitchers start coming in again, and then he
- 29:40Speaker 5: starts punishing him out to right field. So I think
- 29:42Speaker 5: it's a really really encouraging sign that he was able
- 29:45Speaker 5: to hit the ball the other.
- 29:46Speaker 2: Way, and getting that triple yesterday was big. Him getting
- 29:51Speaker 2: up screaming, that's vintage Gunner Henderson, And you know, I
- 29:55Speaker 2: know I said this last episode, and it's even more
- 29:57Speaker 2: so now you need your top guys, Pete Alonzo, Taylor, Ward,
- 30:02Speaker 2: Gunner Henderson. This is a very very undermanned Orioles lineup
- 30:07Speaker 2: right now with Adley Rutchman on the IL, Samuel Bisio
- 30:11Speaker 2: on the IL. Hopefully both of those guys are at
- 30:14Speaker 2: a minimum, you know, the ten days, but who knows
- 30:16Speaker 2: they could linger beyond the ten days and Blaize Alexander
- 30:20Speaker 2: that's going to be a month at least. You're talking
- 30:23Speaker 2: three of your top four hitters out of your lineup
- 30:27Speaker 2: at least for the next week, and the competition does
- 30:31Speaker 2: not get easier. You got the Braves, one of the
- 30:33Speaker 2: better teams in the National League, coming to town this weekend.
- 30:38Speaker 1: It's gonna be interesting up to the deadline. They hosted
- 30:41Speaker 1: Lanta this weekend. As you said, the Ools go to
- 30:43Speaker 1: Detroit early next week hosts Philadelphia. That takes them right
- 30:46Speaker 1: up to the August third trade deadline. We'll see where
- 30:49Speaker 1: the Orioles are is they left Boston three back for
- 30:53Speaker 1: the final wild card in the American League. All right,
- 30:56Speaker 1: that's a rat for Steve, Tim and Brad and we'll
- 30:58Speaker 1: catch you next time on an other edition of Birdland
- 31:01Speaker 1: Territory
