- 0:42Speaker 1: Welcome to the Philadelphia Sports Table podcast show, the longest
- 0:45Speaker 1: running weekly Philly sports podcast show in the world, thirteen
- 0:49Speaker 1: years strong. Here in April. It is good to be
- 0:52Speaker 1: in your ears. If you're watching on YouTube, I'm sorry,
- 0:55Speaker 1: you have to actually look at us right now. I'm
- 0:58Speaker 1: Jeff Warren. I'm hear that, Bunny Len Hunsicker. Len, I
- 1:02Speaker 1: have to say, first off, it's great to see a buddy.
- 1:04Speaker 1: Great to see it.
- 1:05Speaker 2: We have to look at ourselves, so you have to
- 1:08Speaker 2: look at us too.
- 1:09Speaker 1: Now, absolutely how it works. It was hilarious. Last week
- 1:13Speaker 1: was actually like the thirteenth anniversary show, and neither of
- 1:17Speaker 1: you or Eric were on. I had to get our
- 1:19Speaker 1: buddy judge instead of fill in. I know. It was
- 1:24Speaker 1: just hilarious. It was so ironic. We're celebrating our thirteen
- 1:28Speaker 1: year anniversary and two of the guys or the show
- 1:33Speaker 1: not able to be there. It was just I mean,
- 1:34Speaker 1: you had you had work stuff, or you had family
- 1:37Speaker 1: stuff going on.
- 1:38Speaker 2: Eric had going on.
- 1:39Speaker 1: Yeah, work, Eric had work stuff going on. Sometimes it
- 1:42Speaker 1: just doesn't doesn't work out. Sometimes the stars don't align.
- 1:45Speaker 2: Nope. Usually we're pretty good with being able to alternate,
- 1:50Speaker 2: uh yeah, week to week with with myself and Eric,
- 1:52Speaker 2: but yeah, sometimes it just doesn't work out like that.
- 1:55Speaker 1: Yeah, exactly. But I'll tell you something that is working
- 1:57Speaker 1: out that we're gonna be talking about here on this
- 2:00Speaker 1: show is the fact that the Philadelphia Flyers have been
- 2:02Speaker 1: kicking some major ass in this first round of Stanley
- 2:06Speaker 1: Cup playoffs. Folks. We're going to get into that first
- 2:08Speaker 1: and foremost on this show, and then from there we're
- 2:11Speaker 1: gonna divert our attention to the Philadelphia seventy six Ers.
- 2:14Speaker 1: They're facing the Boston Celtics in the first round of
- 2:17Speaker 1: the NBA Playoffs. As of us recording this right now,
- 2:21Speaker 1: series is tied one to one. VJ. Edgecombe was just
- 2:24Speaker 1: absolutely fantastic in the second game, dropping thirty points, and
- 2:28Speaker 1: it's really, i think, though, lend tough to think that
- 2:32Speaker 1: the Sixers are actually gonna make it out of this
- 2:34Speaker 1: particular series kind of seems like a waste of time,
- 2:36Speaker 1: to be honest with you.
- 2:37Speaker 2: But yeah, I mean that first game when they lost
- 2:41Speaker 2: by more than thirty was just like, Okay, this is
- 2:43Speaker 2: how this is going to go. But hey, to their credit,
- 2:45Speaker 2: they scrape themselves off the mat and came back in
- 2:49Speaker 2: one game too.
- 2:49Speaker 1: Hey, yep.
- 2:50Speaker 2: I mean, do I expect them to win this series? No,
- 2:54Speaker 2: but you know, hey, maybe they'll surprises. I didn't expect
- 2:57Speaker 2: the Flyers to win this series, so what do I know?
- 2:59Speaker 1: I know, well, they haven't won it yet, right, Yeah,
- 3:02Speaker 1: but I mean, yeah, get the getting the horse.
- 3:06Speaker 2: But yeah, I mean they're off to a you couldn't
- 3:10Speaker 2: ask for much more than.
- 3:11Speaker 1: That, exactly exactly. We're gonna get into the Flyers first
- 3:14Speaker 1: six ers next, and then we're gonna get into some
- 3:17Speaker 1: Philadelphia Union talk. I know, we were talking about the
- 3:19Speaker 1: Union last week with our good friend Josh Schuster from
- 3:21Speaker 1: Philadelphia soccernow dot com, and I think they actually made
- 3:25Speaker 1: have won tonight if I'm not mistake. Maybe the match
- 3:27Speaker 1: is still going on. But the Union stink this year.
- 3:31Speaker 1: They could potentially be the worst team in Major League Soccer.
- 3:35Speaker 1: We're gonna talk about this team and then we're gonna
- 3:37Speaker 1: finish off our discussion with some Phillies talk. The Phillies
- 3:41Speaker 1: stink too free aspect of this stinks, Oh my gosh,
- 3:46Speaker 1: they are what We're thrown down on the table. Good
- 3:48Speaker 1: friend Eric Mortelly from that balls out of here dot
- 3:51Speaker 1: com over at fan side, he's gonna join us for
- 3:53Speaker 1: a conversation about the Phillies as well, after Lennon and
- 3:56Speaker 1: I discussed this team. So let's first and foremost, let's
- 4:00Speaker 1: let's talk about this Philadelphia Flyers team. Man, they are
- 4:02Speaker 1: looking great and kicking ass so far in the first
- 4:06Speaker 1: round of the Stanley Cup playoffs. Here, lenn it's Wednesday night,
- 4:11Speaker 1: we're recording this. They just got done beating the Penguins
- 4:14Speaker 1: five to two. They take a three zero lead in
- 4:19Speaker 1: terms of this series. Holy shit, man, I cannot believe this.
- 4:24Speaker 1: Like I'm not even exactly Yeah, it's the beauty of hockey.
- 4:29Speaker 1: Let's just say that right off the bat. It is
- 4:31Speaker 1: the beauty of hockey, the beauty of playoff hockey. Just
- 4:34Speaker 1: about anything can happen with momentum, with various sparks within
- 4:39Speaker 1: whatever team is on the ice. I've got to say
- 4:41Speaker 1: that there aren't many Flyers players who are off to
- 4:46Speaker 1: any type of slow starts here within this not a
- 4:50Speaker 1: playoff series, but the playoffs in general. Here, even most
- 4:53Speaker 1: of the players who aren't like racking up points have
- 4:55Speaker 1: found ways to impress on the ice. They are playing
- 5:00Speaker 1: with purpose, they are playing with fire, they are playing
- 5:02Speaker 1: with this desire that we haven't seen. We're not seeing
- 5:06Speaker 1: that from the Pittsburgh Penguins. We are not seeing that
- 5:08Speaker 1: fire from the Pens, and I fucking love it, man.
- 5:12Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean they're you know, tonight was a great example.
- 5:17Speaker 2: I mean that scrum with Connectney elbow and rust and
- 5:20Speaker 2: then and then that whole thing. I mean, just him
- 5:22Speaker 2: being you know, the ship heel that that we know
- 5:25Speaker 2: and love him as. And even like Paul Bessonette, you know,
- 5:28Speaker 2: said at the one of the intermissions, like the Flyers
- 5:31Speaker 2: are doing what they're what they do. They're playing scumbag
- 5:34Speaker 2: hockey and it works for them. But it's it's it's
- 5:37Speaker 2: you know, playing hard has been kind of being dirty,
- 5:41Speaker 2: you know, gosh, seeing if you can get that shot in,
- 5:44Speaker 2: and you know, by the time the reps are looking,
- 5:46Speaker 2: the pens are retaliating. And then yeah, that's actually happening
- 5:48Speaker 2: a lot where where they're they're getting those retaliation penalties
- 5:52Speaker 2: and just you know, they've been just firing on all cylinders.
- 5:55Speaker 2: I mean, everybody's contributing, even getting you know, goals from
- 6:00Speaker 2: death defend defenseman like Ristall Linen and Sealer. Tonight I
- 6:03Speaker 2: mean is a big thing. It's not just you know,
- 6:06Speaker 2: the guys that you normally think it's gonna be. Yeah,
- 6:08Speaker 2: so it's been beyond impressive. I mean, I I on
- 6:13Speaker 2: the show, you know, I've been saying, you know, we
- 6:16Speaker 2: don't have enough pieces. We don't have enough pieces. And
- 6:18Speaker 2: I still feel that there's a huge gap in the
- 6:21Speaker 2: middle with the center depth. I would love to see
- 6:24Speaker 2: some semblance of a number one defenseman, which I still
- 6:27Speaker 2: don't think they have. And I like what Drysdale's done
- 6:29Speaker 2: this year a lot, but you know, I still think
- 6:32Speaker 2: there's more, you know, to be there. But I mean
- 6:35Speaker 2: they were They had I think a three point eight
- 6:37Speaker 2: percent chance in March to make the playoffs. They went
- 6:40Speaker 2: on that huge run they made the playoffs. That alone
- 6:43Speaker 2: makes this a successful season. If they win this series,
- 6:47Speaker 2: I mean, to win a first round series and get
- 6:50Speaker 2: a playoff win under the belts of so many young players,
- 6:54Speaker 2: is why that can only be categorized as a wildly
- 6:58Speaker 2: successful season for this year and just a great jumping
- 7:01Speaker 2: off point for the future for them.
- 7:03Speaker 1: Absolutely, look so far in this series here, they've scored
- 7:06Speaker 1: a total of eleven goals. My gosh, I mean again,
- 7:10Speaker 1: the fire that this team has is pretty astonishing. But
- 7:13Speaker 1: I do want to mention really quick. I do want
- 7:15Speaker 1: to mention through the first two games of this series,
- 7:20Speaker 1: Mattvee Miechcoff not only didn't have a single point, his
- 7:24Speaker 1: ice time had been cut dramatically as well, eleven minutes
- 7:28Speaker 1: and twenty five seconds in Game one and then a
- 7:32Speaker 1: season low nine minutes and thirty two seconds in Game two.
- 7:35Speaker 1: I don't know what his minutes were tonight as they
- 7:38Speaker 1: won Game three, but still it's kind of interesting. We've
- 7:42Speaker 1: seen some pretty nice productivity from Meachcoff over the past
- 7:45Speaker 1: couple weeks, coming into this playoff series, and really he's
- 7:49Speaker 1: been kind of non existent.
- 7:50Speaker 2: Here meach cough time on ice tonight eight minutes and
- 7:54Speaker 2: eight seconds. What the hell is going on? Yeah, what's happening?
- 7:57Speaker 2: But you know it's working with in the framework it is.
- 8:01Speaker 2: Oh yeah, So yeah, I mean, do I want to
- 8:04Speaker 2: see more of Mitchikov? Of course I do. But you
- 8:08Speaker 2: can't really say, oh, what are they doing, because what
- 8:12Speaker 2: they're doing is winning playoffs exactly?
- 8:14Speaker 1: No, I don't.
- 8:14Speaker 2: I yeah, I mean, it's just what it is right now.
- 8:18Speaker 1: Yeah. I think coming into this too, and when we
- 8:22Speaker 1: did the when we did the Flyers postseason preview show
- 8:27Speaker 1: last week again with our good friend Josh Schuster, we
- 8:30Speaker 1: were talking about who is going to be at the
- 8:33Speaker 1: goalie advantage, and you know, we came away from the
- 8:36Speaker 1: discussion last week when that the Flyers with Dan Vladar
- 8:40Speaker 1: were at an obvious advantage. You look at the goals
- 8:44Speaker 1: against average coming into this series, Stuart Skinner just it
- 8:49Speaker 1: just wasn't even in the realm of dan Vladar. Dan
- 8:51Speaker 1: Vladar has been an incredible goalie for this team. They
- 8:55Speaker 1: got to lock him up. They got to lock him
- 8:57Speaker 1: up after this. I don't care how this series goes
- 8:59Speaker 1: at all. Seriously, they could end up losing this series,
- 9:01Speaker 1: which would be absolutely heartbreaking. I don't think that's going
- 9:05Speaker 1: to happen, but still they got to lock up dan
- 9:07Speaker 1: Vladar at this point.
- 9:09Speaker 2: Yeah, and even like playoff previews I was reading before
- 9:13Speaker 2: the series started, We're like, oh, we think the Penguins
- 9:16Speaker 2: are going to sweep, We're still saying that they I mean,
- 9:20Speaker 2: even with that said, they were still saying the one
- 9:23Speaker 2: area where the Flyers have an advantage is in goal
- 9:25Speaker 2: because Stewart Skinner is not really good where because Flodor
- 9:29Speaker 2: has been the Flyers MVP this year. So even the
- 9:31Speaker 2: ones that were saying, oh, Pittsburgh's going to sweep the series,
- 9:34Speaker 2: we're still acknowledging that whole thing with you know, the
- 9:37Speaker 2: goalie situation.
- 9:38Speaker 1: Yes, yeah, I don't know. Is there anything else you
- 9:41Speaker 1: want to get into in terms of this particular series here,
- 9:45Speaker 1: because I mean, holy cow, it's just it's it's astonishing
- 9:50Speaker 1: where the team was in January, they go through the
- 9:54Speaker 1: Olympic break, they come back from it looking seemingly like
- 9:58Speaker 1: a different team. I had various guests on the Table
- 10:01Speaker 1: Talk show and even even even our regular show here
- 10:04Speaker 1: Lenn about Rick tocket what type of coach he has
- 10:07Speaker 1: been during his freshman year here as the Philadelphia Flyers
- 10:11Speaker 1: head coach, and there was just a lot of uncertainty
- 10:15Speaker 1: and we don't know necessarily if he's the guy to
- 10:18Speaker 1: take this team forward. A lot of decision making in
- 10:23Speaker 1: game decision making was reminding some folks every now and
- 10:26Speaker 1: again of John Tortorella. At times. The communications style just
- 10:33Speaker 1: might not have been there, what his relationship was with
- 10:35Speaker 1: certain key players on the team. But you look at
- 10:38Speaker 1: this right now, You look at where this team is
- 10:41Speaker 1: at right now, Rick Tocket's got this team in a
- 10:44Speaker 1: good position.
- 10:45Speaker 2: He does, yeah, I mean he's pushing the right and
- 10:48Speaker 2: I think the big, a big part of that was
- 10:51Speaker 2: the whole thing with you know, something we were just
- 10:53Speaker 2: talking about is Mitchkoffs minutes. This is guy that is
- 10:56Speaker 2: pretty much one of your the faces of your team,
- 11:00Speaker 2: and he's not playing as much. And it's the kind
- 11:02Speaker 2: of and this isn't just with Tacket. I mean this
- 11:05Speaker 2: is like the whole thing with hockey now that he's like, oh,
- 11:09Speaker 2: the old school coach and he's from this period and oh,
- 11:13Speaker 2: this young guy and he's not playing the game the
- 11:15Speaker 2: right way so that the coach is going to sit
- 11:17Speaker 2: him and he doesn't understand today's hockey and all that stuff.
- 11:19Speaker 2: So I mean that that's not just Tacket. That was Tortorella.
- 11:25Speaker 2: That was you know, that's a lot of hockey coaches
- 11:28Speaker 2: I think are kind of you know, they want to
- 11:30Speaker 2: see a two way game and you know, kind of
- 11:33Speaker 2: you have to rein in I guess some of those
- 11:35Speaker 2: players until they kind of understand your system and with
- 11:39Speaker 2: you know, to be fair with the whole Meetchkoff Tacket situation,
- 11:42Speaker 2: I mean I have heard that Mitchkoff is, you know,
- 11:45Speaker 2: making a concerted effort to you know, get better with
- 11:48Speaker 2: his English. But that language barrier is undoubtedly a thing.
- 11:52Speaker 2: I mean, I'm sure stuff gets you know, can't help
- 11:54Speaker 2: but get lost. And you know, practice it's one thing
- 11:57Speaker 2: because you can have a translator there, but in the
- 11:59Speaker 2: heat of the game like that, you know, it's very
- 12:01Speaker 2: easy for something to get lost in translation. Yeah, so
- 12:04Speaker 2: I could, I could see that being a thing.
- 12:06Speaker 1: Yeah, it's gonna be fascinating to see whether or not
- 12:10Speaker 1: this team. And again, as we are recording this on
- 12:13Speaker 1: Wednesday night, Wednesday, April twenty second, things are looking good
- 12:17Speaker 1: for this Flyers team. Folks, let us know what your
- 12:20Speaker 1: thoughts are. If you're watching on YouTube, leave us a
- 12:22Speaker 1: comment below. What do where do you think this team
- 12:25Speaker 1: can actually go here in the Stanley Cup playoffs. We'd
- 12:27Speaker 1: love to hear from you, and you can also shoot
- 12:29Speaker 1: us off an email Philadelphia Sports Table at gmail dot com.
- 12:32Speaker 1: We'd love to read your email here on the show
- 12:33Speaker 1: and respond to it as well if we can get
- 12:36Speaker 1: to it. So that being said, Land, We've got we've
- 12:39Speaker 1: got a we've got a great fun team to watch
- 12:43Speaker 1: right now in the Philadelphia Flyers and on the flip
- 12:45Speaker 1: side of things, playing at the Wells Fargo not Wells
- 12:50Speaker 1: Fargo cheez Exfinity Mobile Center. Right, Celtics and Sixers series
- 12:57Speaker 1: is tied it one to one as of us recording this,
- 13:01Speaker 1: and again I mentioned earlier DJ Edge come dropping like
- 13:04Speaker 1: thirty points in Game two. I mean, thank goodness for him.
- 13:09Speaker 1: He exited the game around four minutes and forty seconds
- 13:13Speaker 1: of the first quarter, limping off to the locker room.
- 13:17Speaker 1: But boy did he bounce back and just was the
- 13:21Speaker 1: spark that this team absolutely needed. I dude, I can't
- 13:24Speaker 1: wait to see what he is going to become. I
- 13:26Speaker 1: just can't wait to see what he's going to become.
- 13:28Speaker 1: But I think in the overall picture when it comes
- 13:30Speaker 1: to this series, I think that the Celtics are gonna
- 13:35Speaker 1: end up dominating at the end of the day.
- 13:38Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean it's you know, this is a team
- 13:40Speaker 2: that in the Celtics that you know, oh, okay, it's
- 13:44Speaker 2: gonna be a gap year. We don't have Tatum this year. Yeah,
- 13:47Speaker 2: they're gonna take a step back. They were like the
- 13:49Speaker 2: number two seed and they get Tatum back. I mean,
- 13:52Speaker 2: Jalen Brown was playing at an MVP level for most
- 13:55Speaker 2: of the year, so it's hard to think you're gonna
- 13:58Speaker 2: go up against that without you know, you're you know,
- 14:01Speaker 2: Superstar Center. You know, it's hard to think that you're
- 14:05Speaker 2: gonna be able to compete there, right, So I mean, yeah,
- 14:08Speaker 2: I'm being able to steal a game in Boston is
- 14:11Speaker 2: you know, is huge. I mean, maybe maybe they can,
- 14:14Speaker 2: you know, I don't know, maybe maybe something crazy can happen.
- 14:18Speaker 2: I don't know, but I I don't see it happening.
- 14:21Speaker 2: I'm I hate to like talk about the offseason while
- 14:25Speaker 2: you know the season is still going on, but they yeah,
- 14:28Speaker 2: they're in the playoffs. Yeah, but you know, the greats
- 14:32Speaker 2: in this game usually will work on something every off
- 14:35Speaker 2: season and do something to get better. And Edgecumb's guy
- 14:39Speaker 2: that I think has that kind of work ethic. So
- 14:41Speaker 2: it'll be interesting to see the gains that he makes
- 14:44Speaker 2: from year one to year two because this is this
- 14:47Speaker 2: guy that I think, I think people are starting to
- 14:50Speaker 2: be like, you know, he could be the face of
- 14:53Speaker 2: that team. And I know we've got Maxie and that's
- 14:56Speaker 2: you know, he's awesome too, But I mean, I don't no,
- 15:00Speaker 2: I think the ceiling Redgecomb might be even higher if
- 15:04Speaker 2: he you know, if he works at that and you know,
- 15:07Speaker 2: really decides to you know, refine certain edges of his
- 15:10Speaker 2: game that need it, and I think he'll do that.
- 15:14Speaker 1: I think, you know, we see certain teams. You know
- 15:17Speaker 1: that we know that the NBA has changed in terms
- 15:20Speaker 1: of you know, having the bigs out there, and the
- 15:25Speaker 1: more bigs you have, the more wins you're going to get,
- 15:27Speaker 1: more titles you can possibly get and or or have
- 15:31Speaker 1: the opportunity to play for. I should say, but I
- 15:34Speaker 1: think you know, we've seen in the NBA over these
- 15:36Speaker 1: years that you know, you have two really good superstars
- 15:40Speaker 1: and there is absolutely a way that you can make
- 15:43Speaker 1: it to the Eastern Conference Finals or Western Conference Finals.
- 15:47Speaker 1: You know, we've seen that time and time again. But
- 15:49Speaker 1: going to your point, I think I think it's okay
- 15:51Speaker 1: to talk about the future. Look, the Sixers aren't going
- 15:54Speaker 1: to be going to the Eastern Conference Finals. They're just
- 15:56Speaker 1: they're just not you know, I I truly don't believe that.
- 16:00Speaker 1: So it's okay to talk about the off season. How
- 16:03Speaker 1: does this team then or has this front office build
- 16:06Speaker 1: around Maxi and Edgecombe at this point And it's sad
- 16:10Speaker 1: for me to say that I should say, it's sad
- 16:13Speaker 1: for me not to say Joe El Embiid, even though
- 16:16Speaker 1: he's going to be here, he's got that contract.
- 16:19Speaker 2: It's like, yeah, how do they He's got the contract.
- 16:21Speaker 2: But it's just like you have to assume that Embiid
- 16:25Speaker 2: is going to be a forty game guy a year
- 16:29Speaker 2: going forward because it's unfortunately where things are at and
- 16:33Speaker 2: they having the appendectomy now, I mean, it's just I
- 16:38Speaker 2: don't know of anybody that can possibly have worse injury
- 16:41Speaker 2: luck than him. I mean, you look at the lists
- 16:44Speaker 2: of maladies, Bell's palsy, appendicitis. It's just like stuff that
- 16:49Speaker 2: you're just like, it's beyond the pale. So it just
- 16:55Speaker 2: it's hard to imagine he's going to, you know, give
- 16:59Speaker 2: you any more than half a season going forward in
- 17:02Speaker 2: the future. I mean, they kind of did what they
- 17:05Speaker 2: did with him this year to make sure he was
- 17:07Speaker 2: fresh for the playoffs, and then appendicitis happened. So it's
- 17:10Speaker 2: just like you throw your hands up at a certain point.
- 17:12Speaker 2: You're just like, okay, you know what else can happen,
- 17:15Speaker 2: But so can you depend on that. Paul George, you
- 17:19Speaker 2: know a guy that you know, I mean, he he
- 17:22Speaker 2: had a twenty five game, you know, time off for
- 17:25Speaker 2: the suspension. It's just, oh, I needed that twenty five
- 17:27Speaker 2: game break.
- 17:29Speaker 3: He did?
- 17:29Speaker 2: You play like you're another one, like forty to fifty
- 17:32Speaker 2: games a year. So it's just like, yeah, yes, you
- 17:34Speaker 2: have these two guys, these two young guys in Maxi
- 17:37Speaker 2: and Edgecomb. It's like, but how do you build around
- 17:39Speaker 2: that when you've got two massively expensive pieces in your
- 17:44Speaker 2: lineup that are only working for half the year, yeah,
- 17:47Speaker 2: or half the season, You're gonna have to find You're
- 17:51Speaker 2: gonna have to really find a diamond in the rough.
- 17:53Speaker 2: You're gonna have to find I think a young, cost
- 17:57Speaker 2: controlled big that can surprise and and have them be
- 18:02Speaker 2: with you know, Maxi and Edgecombe when for those times
- 18:06Speaker 2: when embiid is out, which unfortunately is often.
- 18:09Speaker 1: Yeah, I don't. I don't know if I trust the
- 18:11Speaker 1: front office to get that done. I really don't at
- 18:13Speaker 1: this point.
- 18:14Speaker 2: I yeah, I mean, the one thing that I'll I'll
- 18:17Speaker 2: say Maxi or not Maxie Morey has done all right
- 18:22Speaker 2: is drafting. So maybe with that Rockets pick that they
- 18:27Speaker 2: have this year, they can find somebody in the back
- 18:30Speaker 2: end of the first round. But you know, it's it's
- 18:33Speaker 2: hard when you're not picking up up front and you
- 18:35Speaker 2: have your pick of the liver to really like get excited.
- 18:39Speaker 2: But you know, maybe maybe he can do that, because
- 18:41Speaker 2: that's literally the only thing that Daryl Morey has done
- 18:44Speaker 2: that he has any claim to hold onto his job there. Yeah,
- 18:47Speaker 2: I mean he ideally, ideally him and Nurse are gone
- 18:51Speaker 2: after this offseason. Yeah, I would love to see that.
- 18:55Speaker 2: I would just clean house all together in that front office.
- 18:58Speaker 1: Yeah. I think that's what we'll see for sure, And
- 19:01Speaker 1: we'd love to let We'd love to hear from you
- 19:02Speaker 1: on YouTube. Leave a comment below where you think the
- 19:07Speaker 1: Philadelphia seventy six ers need to go this offseason. I
- 19:10Speaker 1: don't think it's too early to be talking about it. Look,
- 19:12Speaker 1: they just knuck into the playoffs. But when you have
- 19:17Speaker 1: when you have Jalen Brown, who you know, led the
- 19:20Speaker 1: game in scoring for the for the Celtics thirty six points.
- 19:24Speaker 1: In Game two, Jason Tatum with a double double again,
- 19:27Speaker 1: he had nineteen points, fourteen rebounds, and Boston started. They
- 19:32Speaker 1: basically went eleven from thirty eight from three point range,
- 19:36Speaker 1: which wasn't great at all, twenty eight point nine percent.
- 19:39Speaker 1: They're still a better team there's still a better team
- 19:41Speaker 1: than the Sixers. So that being said, we're gonna take
- 19:44Speaker 1: a break, and when we get back, folks, we're gonna
- 19:46Speaker 1: get into some Philadelphia Union talk. It's gonna be gonna
- 19:50Speaker 1: be some sparks flying during that discussion, and we'll be
- 19:54Speaker 1: back in just a bit. Stick with us, all right.
- 19:59Speaker 1: We are, Oh taking that swiggy swig swig.
- 20:03Speaker 2: You caught me, but I'd sneak one in.
- 20:08Speaker 1: I love it because I love it how I can
- 20:10Speaker 1: like see you. Yeah, and then to come back from break,
- 20:15Speaker 1: I wanted to catch you. We got you, all right.
- 20:19Speaker 1: So folks, we got to get into the Philadelphia Union.
- 20:21Speaker 1: I mean, I mean, we don't really have to, but
- 20:23Speaker 1: we kind of should given the fact that they're just
- 20:28Speaker 1: they're they're not a good team. Len And right now
- 20:32Speaker 1: three three, I just checked. They're three to three against Toronto.
- 20:36Speaker 1: It's full time right now.
- 20:37Speaker 2: Yeah, so the game's over. Yeah, and it and it'm
- 20:41Speaker 2: giving up a goal in sixth and the sixth minute
- 20:44Speaker 2: of the stoppage time in order for Toronto to tie
- 20:46Speaker 2: that game up. So I I feel like I've seen
- 20:52Speaker 2: the Union give up a game tying goal in the
- 20:56Speaker 2: last either ten minutes of regulation or in stoppage time. Yeah,
- 21:02Speaker 2: like ten times. It feels like over the past three
- 21:05Speaker 2: seasons it happens a lot. And so that's just not
- 21:10Speaker 2: it's not just a thing for this year's team. This
- 21:15Speaker 2: feels like it happens a lot with the Union. And
- 21:18Speaker 2: I don't understand if they just like panic when when
- 21:22Speaker 2: they get to the end of games and then they
- 21:23Speaker 2: can't hold a leader or what happens. But it just
- 21:26Speaker 2: it never ceases to amaze me. And this is a
- 21:28Speaker 2: game where you know, you actually put up three goals,
- 21:32Speaker 2: which you know, for the Union is a they haven't
- 21:35Speaker 2: done it, you know, all years, a virtual firestorm. So
- 21:40Speaker 2: so it just to be able to put up three
- 21:43Speaker 2: goals and not win the game, that's a rough one
- 21:47Speaker 2: for them, because I mean, you really don't get that
- 21:50Speaker 2: too often with them.
- 21:51Speaker 1: Yeah, I was. I was going through Philadelphia Soccer Now
- 21:55Speaker 1: dot com. I like reading their content, love reading their articles,
- 21:59Speaker 1: and they put up a recent article just talking about
- 22:03Speaker 1: how the scoring struggles are continuing and just in their
- 22:07Speaker 1: previous match against DC United, how they were just unable
- 22:10Speaker 1: to take down DC United, which is a they're a
- 22:15Speaker 1: stingy type of team.
- 22:16Speaker 2: Yeah, that's a team that I think scored has scored
- 22:19Speaker 2: less goals than even the Union. Yeah, which is you know, yes, crazy.
- 22:25Speaker 2: I didn't think that was possible.
- 22:27Speaker 1: It's crazy. In they reported on Philadelphia Soccer Now dot
- 22:31Speaker 1: com and in this article. In previous seasons, the Union
- 22:34Speaker 1: have dominated their matches against DC United, winning their previous
- 22:38Speaker 1: three matches against DC six to zero, three to zero,
- 22:42Speaker 1: and four to zero. And before this season, the last
- 22:46Speaker 1: Union loss against DC United was August of twenty twenty one,
- 22:51Speaker 1: five years later. Wow, that script has flipped.
- 22:55Speaker 3: Lan.
- 22:56Speaker 1: This team is floundering. It got rid of so much
- 23:00Speaker 1: talent during the off season. That's that's a big reason why.
- 23:04Speaker 1: And again the refusal to really spend money on talent.
- 23:08Speaker 1: And when you let talent like like tyber Ebo leave,
- 23:13Speaker 1: there's only so much the Padoya is able to do,
- 23:15Speaker 1: you know. There's it's it's just frustrating to watch and
- 23:20Speaker 1: to follow this team this season, given where they were
- 23:23Speaker 1: last year at the top of the Eastern Conference standings,
- 23:26Speaker 1: and they they just decided to let themselves crater. Like
- 23:31Speaker 1: that's what it was. The off season was like, we're
- 23:34Speaker 1: gonna let things crater. Our organization is being investigated by
- 23:37Speaker 1: the way. You know, it's just it's a mess with
- 23:41Speaker 1: the Union right now.
- 23:43Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, it's it's bad right now. And shockingly
- 23:46Speaker 2: they are not last in the East. You would think
- 23:48Speaker 2: they are, but Atlanta lost again tonight, so they are
- 23:51Speaker 2: the Union to have a one win, one draw, six losses.
- 23:55Speaker 2: I think the Atlanta is now the one win, one
- 24:00Speaker 2: draw on seven losses. So I'm sorry. The Union have
- 24:05Speaker 2: one win, two draws and six losses and the Atlanta's
- 24:10Speaker 2: one win, one draw, seven losses. So Atlanta is actually
- 24:13Speaker 2: worse than the Union, which it doesn't seem possible, but
- 24:17Speaker 2: that is the case as far as the Union. I'm
- 24:20Speaker 2: just kind of hoping. I've seen this in other things.
- 24:23Speaker 2: The Flyers great example, the team that just I mean
- 24:27Speaker 2: look dead to rights in March, like I said, three
- 24:30Speaker 2: point eight percent chance to make the playoffs. Yeah, and
- 24:32Speaker 2: they come on. The team that I kind of adopted
- 24:36Speaker 2: in the in the English Premier League a few years
- 24:39Speaker 2: ago is Wolves, who they finished dead last in the
- 24:43Speaker 2: Premier League this year they're going to get relegated, but
- 24:46Speaker 2: they could not score a goal, you know, in the
- 24:49Speaker 2: beginning of the year, and they came on at the
- 24:51Speaker 2: end and they started winning games and started, you know,
- 24:53Speaker 2: just making things interesting and playing a lot better. I'm
- 24:56Speaker 2: hoping that this is something that happens for the Union
- 24:59Speaker 2: where they don't wait as long as Wolves did. Yeah,
- 25:01Speaker 2: but you know, they don't have to worry about relegation
- 25:03Speaker 2: like Wolves does. Well, like Wolves did. But it's just
- 25:08Speaker 2: a thing where you just hope that whatever new players
- 25:12Speaker 2: they have in the mix, and and you know, whatever
- 25:15Speaker 2: new things have to be ironed out, the kinks that
- 25:18Speaker 2: need to be ironed out, you hope it happens sooner
- 25:20Speaker 2: rather than later. And then maybe they can make a
- 25:23Speaker 2: charge towards the back end of the of the playoffs
- 25:26Speaker 2: spot yeah, you know, and and make some noise there.
- 25:29Speaker 2: But you know, for right now, it it looks pretty glue.
- 25:32Speaker 1: Yeah. I just don't know what could be that spark,
- 25:34Speaker 1: you know, because that's what essentially what you're talking about.
- 25:36Speaker 1: They need that spark, and I don't I don't know
- 25:39Speaker 1: what could that could be on this don't either, I
- 25:42Speaker 1: have no clue. Let us know what you're thinking about
- 25:46Speaker 1: on YouTube with this, with this team, this, this Union team,
- 25:50Speaker 1: My goodness, gracious, goodness, gracious, len, I hope you all
- 25:56Speaker 1: know what that means out there. Goodness, gracious, well we
- 26:00Speaker 1: are I know, we just took a break, folks. I
- 26:01Speaker 1: was supposed to take a break after the Flyers. Uh
- 26:05Speaker 1: talk that we did. But we're gonna take a break now.
- 26:07Speaker 1: And when we get back, Len, you can have a
- 26:09Speaker 1: sip and a swig. I won't get you on camera
- 26:11Speaker 1: again taking a swig. Okay, Well, when we get back,
- 26:16Speaker 1: we got a ton of Phillies talk coming your way. Maybe, Yes,
- 26:20Speaker 1: you're gonna need that drink for the Phillies talk.
- 26:23Speaker 2: Yes, yeah, this is true.
- 26:24Speaker 1: Yes, we'll be back in just a bit, got Phillies
- 26:28Speaker 1: talk coming your way. All right, we are back. Len
- 26:33Speaker 1: had a swig before the break, and uh, all right,
- 26:38Speaker 1: the Philadelphia Phillies. Every aspect of this team is just
- 26:42Speaker 1: underwater right now. Len, thankfully, the New York Mets are
- 26:46Speaker 1: just as bad. That's that's what's keeping me going season day. Yes, yes,
- 26:51Speaker 1: they're worse. And I think what's incredible is and I'm
- 26:56Speaker 1: gonna get it. We're gonna talk to Eric Mooretelly from
- 26:59Speaker 1: that balls out of Here dot as well. I think
- 27:03Speaker 1: the lack of fundamentals at times with this team is
- 27:07Speaker 1: absolutely mind boggling. Like the lack of like, seriously like
- 27:10Speaker 1: the lack of fundamentals, sloppy baseball errors that lead directly
- 27:16Speaker 1: to runs. There's poor execution on just routine plays, just
- 27:22Speaker 1: lack of clean fundamental baseball in key moments in games.
- 27:28Speaker 1: I am, I'm astonished, really, I really am. I'm astonished
- 27:33Speaker 1: because a drop like this is just really really bizarre.
- 27:40Speaker 1: It is. This is hard to take. This is hard
- 27:43Speaker 1: to take. First couple of weeks of the season, even
- 27:46Speaker 1: getting into the third week, it's like, Okay, it's early,
- 27:49Speaker 1: it's early on, it's baseball. One hundred and sixty two games.
- 27:52Speaker 1: Now we're at a point where I'm actually getting a
- 27:55Speaker 1: little concerned here. Should we be concerned? Lenn, I don't
- 28:00Speaker 1: don't know. Maybe I'm I'm trying not to do Negadelphia,
- 28:03Speaker 1: yea overreacting.
- 28:04Speaker 2: I think I think it's fair. I think once you
- 28:06Speaker 2: get into the end of April and and things are
- 28:10Speaker 2: are still bad, then you can start to be like, Okay,
- 28:16Speaker 2: you know, we've all knocked the rust off. Every single
- 28:19Speaker 2: team in Major League Baseball at this point has knocked
- 28:21Speaker 2: the rust off. What's happening here? I think once you
- 28:26Speaker 2: get to the end of of of April, I think
- 28:29Speaker 2: you can start asking these questions, and you know, I
- 28:32Speaker 2: think it's time to maybe start asking that With the Phillies.
- 28:35Speaker 2: You know that there's there's a lot of underperforming and
- 28:39Speaker 2: I mean a lot of guys right now that are
- 28:42Speaker 2: underperforming for this team. So you know, you can you
- 28:46Speaker 2: can basically pick out any number of players right now
- 28:49Speaker 2: and just be like, oh god, real Mudo now is
- 28:53Speaker 2: on the injured list, So you know you have that
- 28:56Speaker 2: going on. You've got guys that just aren't hitting it all.
- 28:59Speaker 2: Guys that you thought were going to be star Wars
- 29:02Speaker 2: or the rotation that haven't you know, lived up to
- 29:05Speaker 2: what you had hoped. There, bullpen guys that just you know,
- 29:09Speaker 2: it's just it's not clicking all on any cylinder right now.
- 29:15Speaker 1: I look at it it, yeah, and I look at history,
- 29:17Speaker 1: and I get really concerned because the last time the
- 29:20Speaker 1: Phillies were eight and fifteen. I think they're eight and
- 29:23Speaker 1: sixteen now because they lost tonight to the Cubs, right, yeah,
- 29:26Speaker 1: I think they dated eight and sixteen. I was looking
- 29:28Speaker 1: at some stats before we recorded, before that game ended
- 29:31Speaker 1: eight and fifteen. Through their first twenty three games, was
- 29:35Speaker 1: twenty fifteen, dude, twenty fifteen was just a horrendous Phillies team.
- 29:41Speaker 1: I mean, you're talking a team that was just in
- 29:43Speaker 1: the toilet, and that year they went sixty three and
- 29:47Speaker 1: ninety nine, just part of the rebuild low point. And
- 29:51Speaker 1: I'm not saying that's going to happen with this team,
- 29:54Speaker 1: but I was. I was getting those I was getting
- 29:56Speaker 1: those feels of, oh my gosh, this could be a
- 29:58Speaker 1: complete disaster, you know. But then again, that twenty fifteen
- 30:02Speaker 1: team not really great in terms of the talent. The
- 30:05Speaker 1: talent on this.
- 30:06Speaker 2: Team should be way better than it is. And that's
- 30:11Speaker 2: the thing. It's not like you, Okay, you're rebuilding and
- 30:14Speaker 2: you have a bunch of no name dudes in there.
- 30:16Speaker 2: You've got household names on this team. And to be fair,
- 30:21Speaker 2: those household guys I'm talking about Harper, I'm talking about
- 30:24Speaker 2: Schwarber are probably, you know, among the best hitters the
- 30:28Speaker 2: Phillies have right now. But you look at some of
- 30:30Speaker 2: the other guys and they are not pulling their weight.
- 30:33Speaker 2: I mean, Trey Turner, sorry for what he makes, not
- 30:37Speaker 2: pulling his weight. Alec Bohm and Bryce and Stott in particular,
- 30:43Speaker 2: these are guys that are Alec Bohm's twenty nine Bryce
- 30:47Speaker 2: and Scott is twenty eight. These are guys who are
- 30:49Speaker 2: in the prime of their career. Alec Boum I'm looking
- 30:53Speaker 2: at Baseball Reference, so I don't know if this was
- 30:55Speaker 2: going into tonight's game. Alec Bohm was hitting one twenty
- 30:59Speaker 2: eight with an OPS. That's on base percentage plus slugging
- 31:03Speaker 2: of three eighty four.
- 31:05Speaker 1: That is.
- 31:07Speaker 2: That's that's not even replacement loud, that's like subterranean. Bryce
- 31:11Speaker 2: and Scott hitting two ten with an OPS of five eleven.
- 31:15Speaker 2: Those are atrocious numbers. And these are everyday regular players
- 31:20Speaker 2: that you were hoping We're going to hit the prime
- 31:24Speaker 2: and supplement your stars, and they have done nothing. Adulus
- 31:29Speaker 2: Garcia has been slow coming out of the gate. He's
- 31:32Speaker 2: the guy though they signed, you know, as a thirty
- 31:34Speaker 2: three year old guy. You know, is he on the decline?
- 31:40Speaker 2: Jtu real Mudo not. You know, he's not bad, but
- 31:43Speaker 2: he's you know, sign I re signed him as a
- 31:47Speaker 2: thirty five year old guy. I mean, my wife was
- 31:50Speaker 2: asking me what's wrong with the Phillies. It's like they
- 31:53Speaker 2: might just be getting old. I mean, Bryce Harper's thirty three,
- 31:56Speaker 2: you know, Schwerber is thirty three. Garcia as I said
- 31:59Speaker 2: it is thirty three, Trey Turner, thirty three, Real Mudo,
- 32:02Speaker 2: thirty five. These are their big guns. Zach Wheeler when
- 32:06Speaker 2: he comes back, he's getting up there, and he's a
- 32:08Speaker 2: guy who in his rehab starts has not really had
- 32:12Speaker 2: the life on his fastball that he's known for. So yeah,
- 32:16Speaker 2: there's real reason for concern with this team if you.
- 32:19Speaker 1: Ask me, absolutely absolutely. Look, I mean the bottom line
- 32:23Speaker 1: is the team needs a spark in some way, shape
- 32:26Speaker 1: or form. I mean we keep I mean, that's basically
- 32:29Speaker 1: that's basically what we were talking about with the Union
- 32:31Speaker 1: just now, you know, you talk about it with the Sixers.
- 32:33Speaker 1: All these teams they need, they need some sort of spark.
- 32:36Speaker 1: But at the end of the day, offense not producing consistently,
- 32:41Speaker 1: starting pitching is underperforming their expectations. The bullpen instability, you know,
- 32:47Speaker 1: coupled with injuries, and again sloppy, inconsistent fundamentals. I mean,
- 32:53Speaker 1: these are four aspects of this team. That's what the
- 32:56Speaker 1: problems are coming down to. And it's not like you're
- 33:00Speaker 1: to take all four of these problems and turn them
- 33:02Speaker 1: around in the course of another week or two. I
- 33:05Speaker 1: don't think that's possible to take these four aspects that
- 33:09Speaker 1: that are just that are so inconsistent right now, I
- 33:13Speaker 1: don't think that's possible. This could be a long haul
- 33:15Speaker 1: when it could.
- 33:16Speaker 2: Be well, I mean, if we get into late May
- 33:22Speaker 2: and this is still happening. Oh, I don't think it's
- 33:25Speaker 2: gonna be a long haul for Rob Thompson. Yeah, because
- 33:28Speaker 2: that's gonna be the first domino to fall if something happens.
- 33:31Speaker 2: And if these guys want want to keep his job,
- 33:35Speaker 2: then they better kick it in the gear because I
- 33:40Speaker 2: you know, Mattingly's there, there's a guy sitting right over
- 33:44Speaker 2: his shoulder that has management experience. So you know, if
- 33:47Speaker 2: they want to keep Thompson's job, they better start acting
- 33:50Speaker 2: like it.
- 33:50Speaker 1: Yep. All right, buddy, Well, I'm gonna I'm gonna talk
- 33:53Speaker 1: to our good friend Eric Moretellian just a bit too.
- 33:56Speaker 1: We're gonna piggyback off our conversation here about the Phillies.
- 34:00Speaker 1: I can't imagine it's gonna be a barn burner and
- 34:05Speaker 1: positive and up.
- 34:06Speaker 2: Yet it's yeah, it's it's hard right now. I mean,
- 34:10Speaker 2: it's just I mean that the guys that are the
- 34:13Speaker 2: stars on this team need to get I mean, they're
- 34:17Speaker 2: they're they're they're they're hitting well. Like I said, Schreber,
- 34:20Speaker 2: Harper are they're fine right now. But fine isn't good enough.
- 34:25Speaker 2: I mean, those guys, for lack of a better term,
- 34:27Speaker 2: need to get hotter than ship. I mean, and really,
- 34:30Speaker 2: you know, put the team on their back, because I
- 34:32Speaker 2: don't know if anybody else on this team is capable
- 34:34Speaker 2: of doing that.
- 34:35Speaker 1: Yeah, all right, well, buddy, I'm gonna let you go. Uh,
- 34:38Speaker 1: it's gonna be great to see you this week. Yeah,
- 34:41Speaker 1: it's gonna be great to see it. We get together
- 34:43Speaker 1: our buddies, we get together for the NFL Draft every
- 34:46Speaker 1: year and we have we have a little bit of
- 34:48Speaker 1: a weekend hanging out. I'm glad we do it. We're
- 34:51Speaker 1: still doing it after all these years. We know a
- 34:53Speaker 1: draft content on this show because I mean, we're gonna
- 34:55Speaker 1: be you know, this show is gonna be going for
- 34:57Speaker 1: the next week. We are gonna be getting into the
- 35:00Speaker 1: NFL draft picks next week, folks, So stick around for that. Buddy,
- 35:04Speaker 1: Do you have any final thoughts here before I let
- 35:06Speaker 1: you go?
- 35:07Speaker 2: I do not. Okay, Phillies and Union please start turning around. Flyers.
- 35:15Speaker 2: Just you keep doing what you're doing.
- 35:17Speaker 1: Absolutely all right, buddy, I will see you this weekend.
- 35:21Speaker 1: And folks, we're gonna take a break. When we get
- 35:23Speaker 1: back Eric Mooretelly from that balls out of here dot
- 35:25Speaker 1: com over at fan Sided, it's going to join us
- 35:27Speaker 1: for more Phillies talk. Stick with us.
- 35:31Speaker 2: And now on the table.
- 35:35Speaker 1: All right, folks, I guess we got to get into
- 35:38Speaker 1: this Philadelphia Phillies team. I think the best part of
- 35:42Speaker 1: this particular segment this week on the podcast is going
- 35:46Speaker 1: to be talking to our good friend from that balls
- 35:48Speaker 1: out of here dot com over at fans Side and
- 35:51Speaker 1: our good friend Eric Mooretelly. Buddy, thanks so much for
- 35:54Speaker 1: jumping on to want to talk about this Philadelphia Phillies team.
- 35:58Speaker 1: Not a lot of great going on, buddy.
- 36:02Speaker 4: Now, Jeff, thanks for having me against me twenty minutes
- 36:05Speaker 4: or so from watching the game, so this would be good.
- 36:07Speaker 1: Yes, absolutely, I'd say I should do this every week
- 36:11Speaker 1: with you, you know, get you out of twenty minutes
- 36:13Speaker 1: or so of watching this team. It's just okay, I mean,
- 36:17Speaker 1: obviously it's frustrating what we're seeing. I mean, the I
- 36:20Speaker 1: would say, probably one of the most frustrating starts to
- 36:23Speaker 1: a Phillies season that we have seen. In quite some time.
- 36:27Speaker 1: I'm talking in terms of this team's contemporary history. Here
- 36:31Speaker 1: we know we I should say, we knew what was
- 36:36Speaker 1: gonna be happening with this lineup heading into this season.
- 36:40Speaker 1: I was very positive coming into twenty twenty six. Here Eric,
- 36:45Speaker 1: thinking to myself, I just wasn't into the hole like
- 36:48Speaker 1: running it back thing, because approximately twenty five percent of
- 36:51Speaker 1: the team was new coming in. I just didn't want
- 36:54Speaker 1: to go there from a Negadelphia standpoint. But man, when
- 37:00Speaker 1: we look at this batting and we look at the
- 37:02Speaker 1: fact that this Phillies team, uh just prior to us,
- 37:05Speaker 1: you know, recording this here on Tuesday, April twenty first
- 37:11Speaker 1: two for twenty eight with runners in scoring position during
- 37:14Speaker 1: the six game losing streak, which had an average of
- 37:18Speaker 1: zero point zero seven to one average is what they've had.
- 37:22Speaker 1: They've allowed two point eight runs over their last or
- 37:26Speaker 1: they or they have two point eight runs per game
- 37:29Speaker 1: over their last twelve games, and they've allowed six point
- 37:32Speaker 1: zero runs per game over this stretch too. It's monumentally bad.
- 37:37Speaker 1: It's monumentally bad, man. And like I just like, I
- 37:40Speaker 1: don't even know it's talking to land about it before
- 37:42Speaker 1: bringing you on, and I just don't. I don't even
- 37:44Speaker 1: know necessarily where to go at this point, because like
- 37:48Speaker 1: you can't fall out of a basement window, you can
- 37:50Speaker 1: only go up from here. I'm absolutely surprised this team
- 37:54Speaker 1: is performing the way they are. The Mets too, we
- 37:56Speaker 1: maybe we can get into that in a bit too.
- 37:58Speaker 1: It's been a surprising division thus are in my opinion,
- 38:00Speaker 1: what are you thinking overall? Buddy?
- 38:05Speaker 4: There's so many things to say, honestly, I mean, like
- 38:09Speaker 4: you said, and I think we've been spoiled for the
- 38:11Speaker 4: last couple of years, right, Like it's like, Okay, the
- 38:13Speaker 4: expectations have been there, and I feel like, you know,
- 38:16Speaker 4: we talked about this before, but in the postseason, you know,
- 38:18Speaker 4: they seem to fall short. But this is really the
- 38:21Speaker 4: first year where they I think they entered with some expectations,
- 38:24Speaker 4: whether people were real high on the team coming in
- 38:27Speaker 4: from you know, the off season or not. But either way,
- 38:30Speaker 4: like the talent is supposed to be there, but man,
- 38:34Speaker 4: what like what a dreadful start. There's you know, they've
- 38:37Speaker 4: had rough starts in the past, but this one just
- 38:41Speaker 4: feels different, like there is no life to this team. Yeah,
- 38:44Speaker 4: it doesn't look like anyone cares. It's there's not like
- 38:50Speaker 4: a good part to really point out, Like, you know,
- 38:53Speaker 4: last year, the the offense would go through slumps, but
- 38:56Speaker 4: the starting pitching was pretty much good all year. Now
- 38:59Speaker 4: it's like some question marks there on paper. Coming to
- 39:02Speaker 4: this season. The bullpen looked like it was supposed to
- 39:04Speaker 4: be better than last year. You know, no one started out.
- 39:07Speaker 1: That started out that way, but then injuries Alvarado being like,
- 39:12Speaker 1: what the heck's going on?
- 39:14Speaker 4: Yeah, Yeah, And that's the part I'm probably like I
- 39:17Speaker 4: would say, least concerned about, because I think that is,
- 39:20Speaker 4: you know, guys just getting healthy, kind of getting innings
- 39:22Speaker 4: under them and everything. And there's been some surprises there too,
- 39:26Speaker 4: like Tim May's has been you know, a pleasant surprise
- 39:29Speaker 4: coming in. But yeah, there's there's not really one one
- 39:33Speaker 4: good thing to say. I mean, I guess we could
- 39:36Speaker 4: say Justin Crawford has been nice in in in his role,
- 39:41Speaker 4: Like he's been better than I expected, and we didn't.
- 39:43Speaker 4: I don't think anyone really expected him to be a
- 39:45Speaker 4: guy who's going to change the complexion of lineup. You know,
- 39:49Speaker 4: Harper's starting to hit the ball a little bit, but
- 39:51Speaker 4: there's just so many gaping holes where it doesn't matter
- 39:55Speaker 4: because you can't get everything done with two or three
- 39:57Speaker 4: guys in a lineup. And it's just like looking through
- 40:01Speaker 4: some things. Here, we have Alec Bohma has got like
- 40:03Speaker 4: a four to oh one ops. Stott has like a
- 40:06Speaker 4: five to eleven ops. And we have like three other
- 40:09Speaker 4: guys who are in the starting lineup with an under
- 40:10Speaker 4: seven OPS. Trey Turner being one of them. It's like
- 40:15Speaker 4: you just watch his offense and I mean, I don't
- 40:17Speaker 4: know about you, but I haven't watched the game where
- 40:19Speaker 4: they've been down where I'm like, yeah, they might have
- 40:21Speaker 4: a chance of coming back in this Like there's just
- 40:23Speaker 4: there's just no fire or fight in this in this
- 40:25Speaker 4: lineup at all.
- 40:27Speaker 1: I on our Opposition Territory podcast this past week, folks,
- 40:31Speaker 1: if you go back into the feed, we concentrated on
- 40:34Speaker 1: the Miami Marlins. And I cannot believe that the Phillies
- 40:37Speaker 1: are looking up at the Miami Marlins in this NL
- 40:40Speaker 1: East and the fact that you've got a picture like
- 40:42Speaker 1: Max Meyer down there, who is creating some consistency for
- 40:46Speaker 1: that starting rotation down there. I just I'm finding it amazing,
- 40:51Speaker 1: and I'm finding it amazing that the starting pitchers for
- 40:54Speaker 1: this Philadelphia Phillies team. As of us recording this, they
- 40:57Speaker 1: have a collective ra of five point four eight. Nola's struggling,
- 41:02Speaker 1: Lizardo's struggling, Tylan Walker as we know, you know, he's
- 41:05Speaker 1: really been struggling. It is so disappointing how the starting
- 41:10Speaker 1: pitching has been performing when it was supposed to be
- 41:14Speaker 1: that strength. Dave Dombrowski talked about it a number of times.
- 41:17Speaker 1: It's the strength of this team, and that's what's gonna
- 41:21Speaker 1: help propel us not only through the regular season, but
- 41:24Speaker 1: then in the postseason. And who the hell knows if
- 41:26Speaker 1: they're gonna get to the freaking postseason at this point
- 41:30Speaker 1: and again after a month. I don't want to necessarily
- 41:34Speaker 1: have any knee jerk reactions, but it's difficult not to.
- 41:37Speaker 1: When you even said, Eric, you know, there doesn't seem
- 41:40Speaker 1: to be that fire there. There really doesn't seem to
- 41:42Speaker 1: be that fire there. It's just, oh gosh, just the
- 41:47Speaker 1: struggles second third time throughout the order, you know, allowing
- 41:52Speaker 1: big innings after small mistakes, just not pitching deep into
- 41:56Speaker 1: games where it puts that much more pressure on the bullpen.
- 41:59Speaker 1: And we're gonna get to the bullpen more detail in
- 42:01Speaker 1: a bit. I just the starting pitch pitching is just
- 42:04Speaker 1: so freaking disappointing thus far in my opinion.
- 42:08Speaker 3: Yeah, no, one hundred percent.
- 42:10Speaker 4: I mean I think that's to me, I kind of
- 42:12Speaker 4: expected the offense has struggle is because we've seen this
- 42:15Speaker 4: pretty much same offense for how many years now. Yeah,
- 42:18Speaker 4: So I as frustrated as I am with the offense,
- 42:21Speaker 4: I can't say I'm surprised starting pitching. I'm definitely a
- 42:24Speaker 4: little more surprised about you know, Sanchez has you know,
- 42:28Speaker 4: numbers wise, has been good, but he's had a couple
- 42:30Speaker 4: of games where he's even had to do some work
- 42:33Speaker 4: like a shaking Yeah. Yeah, his hits for nine are
- 42:36Speaker 4: real high. His whip is higher than it should be.
- 42:39Speaker 4: But again, he's just like he's such a good pitcher
- 42:41Speaker 4: that he know he can get out of those types
- 42:43Speaker 4: of things. But he's not going as deep asy as
- 42:46Speaker 4: as the Phillies would like him too. In a lot
- 42:48Speaker 4: of these games, Nola has been inconsistent, more inconsistent. I
- 42:54Speaker 4: thought he was going to be again. I mean, I
- 42:56Speaker 4: know he's never going to be you know, a three
- 43:00Speaker 4: e are a starting pitcher, but he's just had like
- 43:04Speaker 4: some some rocky outings more so than than I was anticipating.
- 43:08Speaker 4: The one that surprised me the most is Lozardo, Yeah,
- 43:11Speaker 4: and his struggles on the But then I was I
- 43:14Speaker 4: was looking before the show tonight and I saw it.
- 43:16Speaker 4: So his fielding independent pitching is pretty low, so that
- 43:21Speaker 4: kind of you know, for that takes into account, uh
- 43:24Speaker 4: you know, just just him, not anything else going on
- 43:27Speaker 4: in the field. And that's so it's basically a projected
- 43:30Speaker 4: h RA around two four eight. So that's suggesting, like
- 43:33Speaker 4: that's a five run difference almost like to me, that's
- 43:35Speaker 4: suggesting he's running into some bad luck too. His kper
- 43:38Speaker 4: nine is still really high. It's over eleven, which to
- 43:42Speaker 4: me suggests like the stuff is there. I think he's
- 43:45Speaker 4: going to kind of come around a little bit. And
- 43:47Speaker 4: we saw it last year with him, like he had
- 43:49Speaker 4: those like those waves. It was like two or three
- 43:52Speaker 4: games in a row. I think you have like twenty
- 43:54Speaker 4: runs and like in like three games. So he's he's
- 43:57Speaker 4: prone to some of those blow ups every now and then,
- 43:59Speaker 4: and I think, I think, you know, he's one I
- 44:01Speaker 4: think will get better.
- 44:05Speaker 3: Tylon Walker.
- 44:05Speaker 4: I I I keep wanting to like give the guy
- 44:09Speaker 4: a shot.
- 44:09Speaker 3: And it was I think it was two outings ago.
- 44:12Speaker 4: He goes out, gives up a couple of runs in
- 44:13Speaker 4: the first and then settled in and actually looked pretty good.
- 44:15Speaker 3: I'm like, here we go. This is for a number
- 44:17Speaker 3: five starter, this is this is fine.
- 44:19Speaker 1: Yep.
- 44:19Speaker 3: And then then his.
- 44:20Speaker 4: Last outing gives up like seven runs in you know,
- 44:22Speaker 4: three or four innings, whatever it was.
- 44:24Speaker 3: I'm like, okay, I'm done with this now.
- 44:26Speaker 4: Yeah, as I have been since twenty twenty two, twenty
- 44:29Speaker 4: twenty three, whatever it's been. Uh, the one Andrew Painter
- 44:33Speaker 4: has been. I think a I would say a pleasant surprise.
- 44:38Speaker 4: I think he's about where I thought he was going
- 44:40Speaker 4: to be, you know, the eras and the fours. He
- 44:42Speaker 4: had a couple of really good oddings, a couple not
- 44:44Speaker 4: so good addings, but I feel like he's not so
- 44:46Speaker 4: good outings always. It's like one inning where he's kind
- 44:49Speaker 4: of getting knocked around a little bit. But he's probably
- 44:52Speaker 4: he's where I hoped he would be for.
- 44:55Speaker 3: Twenty two year old guy.
- 44:56Speaker 4: Yeah, and to me, health and you know, velocity, all
- 45:02Speaker 4: that stuff is kind of where you want it to be.
- 45:04Speaker 4: So I think, you know you're going to run in
- 45:06Speaker 4: his struggles when you're a twenty two year old pitching
- 45:08Speaker 4: the major leagues for the first time, so I'm not
- 45:09Speaker 4: too worried there. My biggest issue, and you know, we
- 45:12Speaker 4: didn't even touch on Wheeler yet in the rotation. He's
- 45:14Speaker 4: coming back Saturday now, he's making his first start on Saturday.
- 45:17Speaker 4: I just saw it before we got on here, his
- 45:21Speaker 4: little babe concern coming in from that down in velocity.
- 45:25Speaker 4: Doesn't really seem to have his stuff back yet, so
- 45:28Speaker 4: I'm curious to see. I mean, I guess there's nothing
- 45:30Speaker 4: else that he's healthy, right, so there's nothing else he
- 45:32Speaker 4: needs to really prove right down and rehab assignments. But
- 45:36Speaker 4: you know, I think that's kind of a question mark too,
- 45:38Speaker 4: So an area that should be a strength I think
- 45:41Speaker 4: is still maybe not as big a concern as the
- 45:44Speaker 4: offense to me, but it is. If the rotation doesn't
- 45:48Speaker 4: stabilize itself, this team.
- 45:49Speaker 1: Is in trouble correlating the offense the defense that we
- 45:53Speaker 1: have seen too, because I just want to dive into
- 45:56Speaker 1: that really quick. But how that all correlates into how
- 45:59Speaker 1: the mentality of the starting pitchers are throughout the games
- 46:04Speaker 1: I think is important. The defense and sloppy baseball Eric
- 46:08Speaker 1: that we have seen. It's not it's not always catastrophic,
- 46:12Speaker 1: but it has been very costly throughout the season so far.
- 46:16Speaker 1: Errors that are leading directly to runs, just poor execution
- 46:21Speaker 1: on routine plays. There's lack of clean fundamentals happening, fundamentals
- 46:28Speaker 1: of baseball in key moments during the game, and these
- 46:31Speaker 1: mistakes will often extend innings and just snowball into multi
- 46:37Speaker 1: run rallies. And I think that that also plays a
- 46:42Speaker 1: role in what's going on in the mound, the pitcher's mentality,
- 46:47Speaker 1: what they're doing, because we've seen time and time again
- 46:50Speaker 1: where we've got a starting pitcher on this team performing
- 46:53Speaker 1: well and then all of a sudden, all of a sudden,
- 46:56Speaker 1: there is some costly mistake again Strapic, but a very
- 47:01Speaker 1: costly mistake because of some lack of fundamentals that are
- 47:04Speaker 1: going on. And I can see how that can weigh
- 47:07Speaker 1: on a pitcher's mind, you know, whether you're in the
- 47:10Speaker 1: whether you're in the fourth inning, the fifth inning, saying, man,
- 47:13Speaker 1: I'm really trying to work my tail off and this
- 47:14Speaker 1: guy can't even get a routine grounder, you know, over
- 47:18Speaker 1: to first base effectively. I'm wondering how much that has
- 47:22Speaker 1: to do with everything, you know, the defense and the
- 47:26Speaker 1: lack of fundamentals. It's been on my mind.
- 47:29Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, I it certainly should be.
- 47:31Speaker 4: I mean, if I'm a starting pitcher and I know
- 47:34Speaker 4: that I have to be perfect because a I'm not
- 47:37Speaker 4: going to get likely not going to get a ton
- 47:39Speaker 4: of run support. Yeah, I mean, it's no secret that
- 47:41Speaker 4: this offense is not scoring, like the pitchers have to
- 47:44Speaker 4: the pitchers know it, and then you couple it with
- 47:46Speaker 4: the lack of run support, and you have to be
- 47:48Speaker 4: perfect because you know, you don't really know always what's
- 47:52Speaker 4: going on behind you. I mean, I think in terms
- 47:54Speaker 4: of defense, like the outfield is the only part that's
- 47:58Speaker 4: like relatively sound. I mean, I like, I like Scott
- 48:02Speaker 4: Harper's you know, is usually pretty good. And I think
- 48:04Speaker 4: some of this stuff will kind of work itself out.
- 48:06Speaker 4: But I think these guys, I think the offense and
- 48:10Speaker 4: defense are kind of correlating too, because I think these
- 48:14Speaker 4: guys are taking some of the frustrations they have at
- 48:16Speaker 4: the plate and that's going on in the field, Like
- 48:19Speaker 4: it just seems like it's it's it's very cyclical with
- 48:22Speaker 4: what's going on with this team and how they're they're
- 48:25Speaker 4: they're flat, like they're obvious, they're obviously angry, like we
- 48:28Speaker 4: know that they don't want to be playing like this, right,
- 48:31Speaker 4: no one wants to lose, but they they don't like
- 48:34Speaker 4: they're not And again I'm not expecting to see a guy,
- 48:37Speaker 4: you know, break it, you know, hitting the gatorade coolers
- 48:40Speaker 4: or the bat or something in the in the dugout,
- 48:43Speaker 4: but like, just show show some emotion, like even if
- 48:45Speaker 4: you do something good, like other than the you know,
- 48:47Speaker 4: stupid little things they do on base when they hit
- 48:49Speaker 4: a double, Like, do some show some sort of emotion,
- 48:52Speaker 4: so some fire, like make it like when you're down
- 48:54Speaker 4: a run, when you're down a couple of runs, get
- 48:56Speaker 4: a couple back, like amount of comeback, and just show
- 48:59Speaker 4: that like there's some fire here, Like get some momentum
- 49:02Speaker 4: on your side, because then it's good to help the offense.
- 49:04Speaker 4: That's going to help the defense, and then the starting
- 49:06Speaker 4: pitching maybe feels a little more comfortable because hey, I
- 49:08Speaker 4: don't know, have to be perfectly on every pitch because
- 49:10Speaker 4: these guys might actually go out and score some runs
- 49:12Speaker 4: or Turner and Bowe might play solid defense, you know,
- 49:17Speaker 4: on on that side of the infield.
- 49:18Speaker 3: So yeah, I think you're right. I mean, it's got
- 49:21Speaker 3: away on the pitchers.
- 49:22Speaker 1: Absolutely it does. Folks. We are going to take a
- 49:24Speaker 1: break and when we get back, we're going to be
- 49:26Speaker 1: talking more about this Phillies team and unfortunate twenty twenty
- 49:30Speaker 1: six started the season. But if you're not following Eric
- 49:34Speaker 1: on various social sites, I know he's on the Twitter
- 49:37Speaker 1: slash x at Eric underscore Moreatelli again that balls out
- 49:41Speaker 1: of here dot com any other sites you want to promo, buddy,
- 49:45Speaker 1: or where other folks can follow you.
- 49:48Speaker 4: You know, Actually I saw you tag me in Blue
- 49:50Speaker 4: Sky the last time we did this, and I meant
- 49:52Speaker 4: to look up my what my name is, and I
- 49:54Speaker 4: forgot to do I always forget I had that thing,
- 49:56Speaker 4: and then I got it. I got a big last
- 49:58Speaker 4: time we did this, So I yes, just search up
- 50:02Speaker 4: Eric Telly, folks.
- 50:03Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, there's probably only one of me, So yes,
- 50:06Speaker 1: I believe there is all right. We are going to
- 50:09Speaker 1: take a break, folks, and when we get back, we
- 50:11Speaker 1: got more Phillies talk coming your way. Let's continue with
- 50:16Speaker 1: some Phillies talk. I mean, we can talk about them.
- 50:18Speaker 1: Maybe we should talk about the Flyers. Actually, I mean
- 50:21Speaker 1: Lenn and I were talking about the Flyers. I could
- 50:23Speaker 1: talk about them again.
- 50:27Speaker 4: Thank god they're They're like this awesome team to watch.
- 50:31Speaker 4: We need it, right, I mean yes, from what I
- 50:34Speaker 4: was watching before, we have done here the Sixers. Well,
- 50:38Speaker 4: I think we all knew that the Sixers might be in
- 50:39Speaker 4: some trouble against Boston. Yeah, the way the Phillies are playing.
- 50:43Speaker 4: But man, that got for the Flyers, like, that's giving
- 50:45Speaker 4: me something I want to watch every.
- 50:47Speaker 1: Couple absolutely absolutely, all right, well, all right, let's let's
- 50:51Speaker 1: let's keep talking about this Phillies team here. We want
- 50:55Speaker 1: to assess the bullpen, specifically, give our thoughts on where
- 50:59Speaker 1: this bullpen is at mentioned earlier, you know, Jose Alvarado
- 51:03Speaker 1: just not necessarily having a great start to the twenty
- 51:06Speaker 1: twenty six season. There's been some injuries, of course, within
- 51:11Speaker 1: this bullpen, specifically Johann Ran. Bullpen has been shuffled around
- 51:16Speaker 1: a bit. The replacement options basically have been been inconsistent,
- 51:22Speaker 1: and if this team does have a lead, which usually
- 51:26Speaker 1: doesn't really happen, it doesn't feel safe at all. And
- 51:31Speaker 1: the bullpen was strong during the first you know, a
- 51:34Speaker 1: couple weeks of this season, and it's been it's been
- 51:37Speaker 1: a drop off as well. So what are your thoughts here, buddy,
- 51:41Speaker 1: as we're assessing this bullpen.
- 51:43Speaker 4: It's funny, I feel like every every every aspect here,
- 51:46Speaker 4: it's just like, yeah, there's there's some some holes. I mean,
- 51:50Speaker 4: injuries are obviously a big deal here, right, I mean,
- 51:53Speaker 4: losing Doran Is is never ideal. Jonathan Bowling going down,
- 51:59Speaker 4: I know, you know, from a results standpoint, I don't
- 52:02Speaker 4: think Boland has impressed too many people yet, but I
- 52:06Speaker 4: still like what I see from him. Yeah, and I
- 52:08Speaker 4: think he's got some good stuff out of the bullpen,
- 52:10Speaker 4: So I think his injury is significant, you know, to
- 52:16Speaker 4: this Phillies pen Alvarado has been super disappointing. I expected
- 52:20Speaker 4: big things from here, especially from him this year, just
- 52:23Speaker 4: you know, not having thrown a ton of innings last year.
- 52:26Speaker 4: He should have been fresh kind of coming in, you know.
- 52:29Speaker 4: That type of stuff kind of scares me a little bit. Yeah,
- 52:32Speaker 4: you know, Tanner Banks doesn't look like he did last year.
- 52:36Speaker 4: There's there's a lot of guys who are not necessarily
- 52:38Speaker 4: replicating performances from last year or are not kind of
- 52:42Speaker 4: doing what we're expected this year. And again, I think
- 52:46Speaker 4: the bullpen is an area where I don't want to say,
- 52:50Speaker 4: like it's easy to make tweaks, right, but I think
- 52:52Speaker 4: some of these guys as they kind of you know,
- 52:54Speaker 4: you know, kind of get ramped up into the season everything,
- 52:57Speaker 4: I think that's an area where some of these guys
- 52:59Speaker 4: will kind of start figuring bring it out hopefully.
- 53:01Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 53:01Speaker 3: Well, I thought at least concerned about yeah, really quick.
- 53:04Speaker 1: I felt at the beginning of the season there were
- 53:06Speaker 1: more defined roles. There were more defined roles. Yeah, And
- 53:08Speaker 1: I liked it because that's not necessarily how this Phillies
- 53:12Speaker 1: bullpen has operated in the past. I really liked it.
- 53:15Speaker 1: We were seeing some positive results. Now with the injuries,
- 53:18Speaker 1: things have been reshuffled around, and like you're saying, it's
- 53:20Speaker 1: kind of like, you know, leading to some inconsistencies. Hopefully
- 53:24Speaker 1: it can get back to form. And I hate, you know,
- 53:28Speaker 1: I hate trying to make a bet on whether or
- 53:30Speaker 1: not that's going to happen or not. It's it's it's
- 53:32Speaker 1: very uncomfortable.
- 53:33Speaker 4: Here, absolutely, Yeah, and I think that's a big thing.
- 53:37Speaker 4: I know, I forget who it was. Someone mentioned though
- 53:39Speaker 4: in the beginning of the season, how it did. I
- 53:40Speaker 4: think it would have been Keller even in like a
- 53:43Speaker 4: spring training interviews said, you know, just knowing when you're
- 53:47Speaker 4: getting called on is nice to know. And I think
- 53:50Speaker 4: that's such a big mentality piece for these relievers. And
- 53:53Speaker 4: they finally went into a season with that structure, and
- 53:56Speaker 4: you know, things just haven't gone according to plan, And
- 54:00Speaker 4: when the starting pitching has been iffy, right, the bullpen's
- 54:03Speaker 4: been taxed more, the bullpen gives up runs, the offense
- 54:06Speaker 4: can't really necessarily catch up, catch back up. It's just
- 54:10Speaker 4: like like I said, it's it's it's a it's a
- 54:12Speaker 4: bad cycle of just.
- 54:13Speaker 3: Everything not working at one time.
- 54:15Speaker 4: And it's just like you know, watching a game the
- 54:19Speaker 4: years between you know, twenty thirteen and you know twenty
- 54:22Speaker 4: eighteen or so, we're frustrating because they were bad. At
- 54:26Speaker 4: least you knew they were going to be bad. Here
- 54:28Speaker 4: it's like, Okay, this roster has a huge payroll and
- 54:34Speaker 4: it's not performing to where it should where it should be,
- 54:38Speaker 4: and it's it's all over the place, right, It's the pitching,
- 54:41Speaker 4: it's it's the hitting, it's the superstars, it's the ancillary guys.
- 54:45Speaker 4: Like it's just nothing's really seeming to click. And the
- 54:49Speaker 4: parts that I think we thought, you know, and I
- 54:51Speaker 4: think we talked, you know, pre preseason about this, how
- 54:54Speaker 4: you know, the starting rotation, the bullpen. We're supposed to
- 54:56Speaker 4: be Harry's of strength and they're and they're just not
- 54:59Speaker 4: right now. You alluded to it earlier, Right, We're a
- 55:02Speaker 4: month in. Things can change, things can flip, but like
- 55:04Speaker 4: you don't want to dig yourself in too much of
- 55:06Speaker 4: a hole here, and it's getting to the point where,
- 55:10Speaker 4: you know, that's getting a little bit scary.
- 55:11Speaker 1: Yeah, exactly exactly because I think what we're seeing foundationally
- 55:16Speaker 1: with this team, and I hesitate to say it is
- 55:19Speaker 1: just the lack of situational execution baseball IQ moments. I mean,
- 55:25Speaker 1: you're seeing repeated failures in productive outs, advancing runners, you know,
- 55:32Speaker 1: to out hitting the plate. Discipline in big spots just
- 55:37Speaker 1: isn't there. That situational execution is just non existent, and
- 55:42Speaker 1: even when they do get some traffic, they don't convert
- 55:46Speaker 1: anything into runs. And overall, it's just a terrible run
- 55:50Speaker 1: differential and overall performance profile by this team as well.
- 55:54Speaker 1: So I guess to close us out here, I mean,
- 55:57Speaker 1: how can the Phillies actually end up rebounding from here
- 56:01Speaker 1: with all this negativity and gosh, we hate being Megadelphia
- 56:04Speaker 1: like like, like we've said earlier, these things are compounding
- 56:10Speaker 1: and it's creating this foundational system for this twenty twenty
- 56:15Speaker 1: six season. It is still early, like we're saying, but
- 56:18Speaker 1: I'm getting more and more concerned that because again of
- 56:22Speaker 1: the lack of situational execution, that this could be a
- 56:26Speaker 1: thing you know, well well into May and even even June,
- 56:29Speaker 1: and at that point trade deadline comes there. I mean,
- 56:32Speaker 1: people are going to be calling for folks heads here.
- 56:35Speaker 1: So how did they get out of this here? Eric?
- 56:38Speaker 4: I mean, it's certainly a trend, right, I mean, the
- 56:39Speaker 4: situational thing has been a trend, and it's been trending
- 56:42Speaker 4: in the wrong direction for a long time. Yeah, that's
- 56:45Speaker 4: obviously one big aspect. I think health in the in
- 56:47Speaker 4: the bullpen and starting rotation, you know, getting Wheeler back,
- 56:50Speaker 4: getting some of these key bull pen guys back is
- 56:53Speaker 4: really big. You made a good point earlier, You're saying,
- 56:56Speaker 4: guys are getting on base, right, they have traffic on
- 56:59Speaker 4: the basis, there's runs and I know not everything can
- 57:02Speaker 4: be live and die by the long ball, but the unfortunately,
- 57:06Speaker 4: like the way the game of baseball is now you
- 57:08Speaker 4: got it for power to have a chance in to
- 57:12Speaker 4: make a good postseason run here, especially when you can't
- 57:15Speaker 4: string a lot of hits together. The slugging percentages on
- 57:18Speaker 4: this team are abysmal. I was looking at some numbers
- 57:23Speaker 4: earlier and I wanted to just point out that Alec
- 57:27Speaker 4: Boom's slugging percentage, you're six foot six or six foot
- 57:30Speaker 4: five third baseman has a slugging percentage of point of
- 57:34Speaker 4: one to eighty seven, which is actually lower than is
- 57:37Speaker 4: two that is two fourteen on base percentage. So you're
- 57:43Speaker 4: just seeing like a businal numbers there, you know. Uh,
- 57:47Speaker 4: let's see, Schwarver's got a good u slugging percentage, as
- 57:50Speaker 4: we'd expect. Garcia looked like he was gonna be okay
- 57:53Speaker 4: for a little bit. He's got a three thirty eight
- 57:54Speaker 4: slug and that's really the only reason you brought him in.
- 57:58Speaker 4: We know it wasn't gonna be get on base a lot.
- 57:59Speaker 3: Yeah, but the.
- 58:01Speaker 4: Only two guys that have a slug over five hundred
- 58:05Speaker 4: are Harper and Schwarber and Felix Reyes. Considering he's got
- 58:11Speaker 4: one home run in I was playing cleanup. He's hitting
- 58:13Speaker 4: cleanup tonight. I haven't seen what he's done yet, but
- 58:16Speaker 4: I think they have to manufacture runs, right, and one
- 58:18Speaker 4: way to do that is hit for power. Last year, obviously,
- 58:21Speaker 4: Schwarber hit a ton of home runs, right, Harper hit
- 58:25Speaker 4: like twenty seven. I think Cassian is hit like eighteen
- 58:27Speaker 4: and Max Kepler hit like seventeen. I'm sorry, but like
- 58:30Speaker 4: in today's game, you got to manufacture runs in other
- 58:34Speaker 4: ways then, and they're just not doing it. Ye, So
- 58:37Speaker 4: I think you got to increase the power number a
- 58:39Speaker 4: little bit somehow that or they have to do something
- 58:43Speaker 4: they haven't been able to do since. I feel like
- 58:45Speaker 4: the first couple series of the twenty twenty two playoffs
- 58:48Speaker 4: where that you just get guys on base and just
- 58:50Speaker 4: keep a rally going, Yeah, they just can't sustain them.
- 58:53Speaker 3: So that to.
- 58:54Speaker 4: Me, it's it's the situational stuff in manufacturing runs, and
- 58:58Speaker 4: I think the pitching will kind of fallo to maybe
- 59:00Speaker 4: not be perfect. It won't be as good as last
- 59:02Speaker 4: year maybe, but I think that'll kind of sort itself out.
- 59:06Speaker 1: Listen to us, Phillies, listen to us here and do
- 59:09Speaker 1: it on the field. It it's easy, right, Yes, exactly, folks.
- 59:13Speaker 1: He's Eric Morretelly again from that Balls out of here
- 59:15Speaker 1: dot Com over at fans Sided on the Twitter slash
- 59:18Speaker 1: x at Eric underscore Moretelly, my friend was great talking
- 59:21Speaker 1: to you. Always love our conversations here, always fun dialogue.
- 59:26Speaker 1: Come back join us. We'll hopefully we can talk about
- 59:29Speaker 1: this team again, if you're up for it, when they're
- 59:32Speaker 1: maybe doing a little bit better that that, that'd be
- 59:34Speaker 1: really nice.
- 59:36Speaker 3: You know, I don't actually mind.
- 59:37Speaker 4: I feel like the last few we've talked about have
- 59:39Speaker 4: always been like kind of positive. It was kind of good,
- 59:41Speaker 4: like airing out some grievance. It was a little therapeutic.
- 59:44Speaker 4: So yeah, yeah, hopefully hopefully next time we speak things
- 59:48Speaker 4: are a little bit better though, and we don't have
- 59:51Speaker 4: hopefully we let's just we have one area of positivity
- 59:54Speaker 4: we can talk about at least because night I don't
- 59:56Speaker 4: think we really evented so exactly.
- 59:58Speaker 1: Folks, that's going to do it for us here. We
- 1:00:00Speaker 1: will catch you on the next Philadelphia Sports Table podcast show.
- 1:00:03Speaker 1: Take care, Take care, We'll catch you next time.
