Latest / Right Now Hot Takes / Massachusetts Just Removed the Limit — Abortion Until Birth
Transcript
- 0:05Imagine this. A state that already allowed late
- 0:08-term abortions under several exceptions just
- 0:11removed the last meaningful limit. After 24 weeks,
- 0:16the only standard left is the professional judgment
- 0:18of the physician. No gestational cutoff. No clear
- 0:23list of life -threatening conditions. Just judgment.
- 0:27Welcome to Right Now Hot Takes. I'm Jim Rand.
- 0:30Governor Maura Healey signed the bill this week.
- 0:33Supporters call it strengthening protections
- 0:35and removing barriers for patients facing complex
- 0:38situations. Critics call it what it is, abortion
- 0:41throughout pregnancy with almost no remaining
- 0:44guardrails. This is not primarily a medical complexity
- 0:48story. This is a values story. For years, the
- 0:51left insisted that late -term abortions were
- 0:53rare, tragic, and only for the most extreme cases
- 0:57involving the life of the mother or lethal fetal
- 0:59anomalies. Then they quietly expanded the language
- 1:03until the exceptions swallowed the rule. Now
- 1:05they have dropped even that pretense in Massachusetts.
- 1:08The new standard is simply the professional judgment
- 1:11of the physician. Young people are being told
- 1:14this is progress, that bodily autonomy has no
- 1:17limits, and that questioning it makes you extreme
- 1:20or anti -woman. But every society that has lost
- 1:23its sense of the value of the most vulnerable
- 1:25eventually loses more than that. Respect for
- 1:29life is not just a religious talking point. It
- 1:31is the foundation of personal responsibility,
- 1:34family, and the idea that some things are not
- 1:37for sale or for pure convenience. Look at the
- 1:40incentives. When the law says the decision is
- 1:43simply professional judgment with no clear boundaries
- 1:45or public accountability, the culture shifts.
- 1:49What was once rare becomes more common. What
- 1:51was once protected becomes optional. The pressure
- 1:54moves in one direction. I love this country because
- 1:57it still has people willing to stand up and say
- 2:00the quiet part out loud. A viable child is not
- 2:03a choice. A society that cannot draw that line
- 2:06will struggle to draw any others with consistency.
- 2:09If you're in your 20s and you're being sold the
- 2:11idea that this is just healthcare between a doctor
- 2:14and a patient, ask what kind of culture you're
- 2:16being asked to inherit. One that protects the
- 2:19strong at every stage of life or one that protects
- 2:22the weak only when it is convenient and politically
- 2:24safe. The left celebrates this as liberation
- 2:27and resistance against the other side. History
- 2:30and basic human intuition suggest it is something
- 2:33closer to abandonment of the most defenseless.
- 2:36We can do better. We have done better. The American
- 2:39tradition of protecting the vulnerable, even
- 2:41when it is hard or unpopular, is not a flaw.
