- 1:47to the show. Hope everybody had a great weekend, got a chance to
- 1:49enjoy some of the nice weather we had here in the valley yesterday. Lots
- 1:53to cover this morning, including a little fun a little bit later on the
- 1:56show as the Celtic Calling event is returning to Charleston, But I want to
- 2:00get to this first. There has been so much talk and maybe I'm as
- 2:05guilty of it as anybody else says about these young kids today, and you
- 2:08know they don't know anything about current events or government or civics or things like
- 2:14that. Well A, let me say that was not my experience in my
- 2:19four years or so, but I worked in state government, working for the
- 2:21Secretary of State's office, where one of my jobs was to go into public
- 2:25schools and to talk to high school kids about the importance of voting when voter
- 2:30registration drives and things of that nature. And b I've often been told,
- 2:34well, they just don't teach government, and they don't teach civics anymore.
- 2:37Well, again, I will say this, if you compare it to where
- 2:42it is now as to where it was when I was in school, back
- 2:45in the dark ages, we had a grand total of one semester of civics
- 2:50and that was taught in eighth grade, not in high school. Or kids
- 2:53are about to enter adulthood and enter the voting age they that having been said,
- 2:58civics I think is alive and way well and our school system. Rebecca
- 3:02Tender is a president of the West Virginia Civiy's Coalition and she joins us now
- 3:06on the show. Rebecca, good morning, welcome to the show. Good
- 3:08morning, thank you for having me, thank you for being here, and
- 3:13not to put you right on the spot from the very get and go here,
- 3:15but please dispel the myth that Civics is no longer taught or is important
- 3:21in public schools in West Virginia. Well, of course, according to the
- 3:24West Virginia Civics Coalition, it is of paramount importance and it is being taught
- 3:30in our schools in West Virginia. There are standards for students in elementary,
- 3:38middle and high school in the area of Civics and also history. So it
- 3:43is being taught and it is a focus of our coalition. And tell me
- 3:49about the coalition, about the West Virginia Civic's Coalition, what exactly goes into
- 3:53this, and just tell us about the organization as a whole. Sure,
- 3:55the mission of the West Virginia Civics Coalition is to create an active coalition of
- 4:01civic minded individuals and organizations to foster equitable civic engagement and education in West Virginia
- 4:11and to make meaningful improvements to policies and practices in civic learning. So we
- 4:17have a group that is growing by the day and individuals can sign up to
- 4:26come to our meetings and learn about what's happening in West Virginia. We were
- 4:31fortunate enough to get a grant from a civics and created a website which can
- 4:38be found at wv's Civics Coalition dot org. And we've created that website,
- 4:46and we've also disseminated a need survey which gave us some information on where the
- 4:53gaps are and where we could start work to focus to figure out what needs
- 5:00to be done in the future for improvement of civic learning in the state.
- 5:06And so we also are hosting an event kicking off Civic Learning Week, which
- 5:15begins on March eleventh, and so our event will be at the Culture Center
- 5:21on March eleventh from ten to one, which will highlight civic learning. We'll
- 5:28hear from a number of different civic leaders, including our Secretary of State,
- 5:34Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. We will have voting machines there. There
- 5:42will be a fun activity of a scavenger hunt for students and adults to go
- 5:49into the museum to find artifacts that represents the different amendments in our constitution.
- 5:56And so we hope to be highlighting all the wonderful thing specific education is and
- 6:03can do, and make sure that people keep it top of mind, because
- 6:10it doesn't get the same attention as some of the other subjects, but it
- 6:16is certainly of paramount important. I would agree with that. Again, we're
- 6:21talking with Rebecca Tender, who's the president of the West Virginia cifc's coalition,
- 6:26about their organization and some of their big events that they have. We'll give
- 6:29you those dates and website before we close out the segment. I will remind
- 6:32you that the Day Violence Showing five eighty Live is brought to you in part

- 6:47this may be a loaded question, but in the age of kids having smartphones
- 6:51and access to all sorts of news stories, there may be more exciting things
- 6:59to them than politics and government. What has your experience been though, in
- 7:04dealing with our young people and how much they really care about this stuff?
- 7:10Well, it is amazing. I also run the West Virginia We the People
- 7:15program, which is a program that puts the Constitution and Bill of Rights into
- 7:19the classroom and the culminating activity is a mock Congressional hearing, and it is
- 7:27wonderful and amazing to hear from elementary, middle and high school students talking about
- 7:32our constitution and how it applies today. For example, in the news today,
- 7:40there's news that the Supreme Court is going to be taking on a case
- 7:46or actually two cases combined about whether or not the First Amendment applies and how
- 7:53it applies to social media. So there is nothing more important to our young
- 7:59pe people then social media. They get news and information, as you've indicated,
- 8:05from the Internet, and what can and cannot be placed in front of
- 8:09them is something that's important to them, and so focusing on what's happening today
- 8:18is certainly important to them. And you know, Rebecca, I think we
- 8:24forget about the number of young people that actually serve in our legislature in West
- 8:31Virginia currently. You know, when I was growing up, it seemed like
- 8:33nearly everyone serving in the legislature look like my grandpa. Now in our legislature
- 8:41we have quite a few young people serving on both sides of the aisle.
- 8:46Absolutely, so obviously there is an interest that caused them to be willing to
- 8:52stick their neck out and serve our public in that capacity, and I think
- 8:58that's very important. It's very to get our young people involved in again some
- 9:01of those groups of my experience in state government, some of those again Republicans
- 9:05and Democrats just kind of worked together. They were called the Millennial Caucus at
- 9:09one time, you know, and it again it was Republicans and Democrats,
- 9:11just a coalition of younger people. Talk about again the event that you have
- 9:16covered up at the Culture Center, Well, the event coming up is called
- 9:22the West Virginia Civics Coalition presents civic education now more than ever, and it
- 9:28will be held at the West Virginia Culture Center right here in our capitalist city
- 9:33on March eleventh, from ten am to one pm. And those people who
- 9:41sign up, and they can come to our website to sign up, we'll
- 9:45get to hear from Supreme Court Justice Tim Armstead, US District Court Judge Irene
- 9:50Barger, our West Virginia Secretary of State Mac Warner, and get to interact
- 9:56with a portrayer of Senator Randolph Jennings and some Department of Education officials and other
- 10:07civic leaders will be there as well with our hands on learning with the voting
- 10:13machines, and as I've said before, a constitutions Gavenger Hunt and the museum.
- 10:18We will also get a free box lunch and entitled to a mileage reimbursement
- 10:24if they have to travel from Afar to get there to attend the event.
- 10:31So we hope for it to be a nice collaborative learning environment for students,
- 10:35teachers, and community members from anywhere in the state to see what's happening in
- 10:41West Virginia and hear about the importance of civic learning. All right, Rebecca,
- 10:46I appreciate you being here. Give us that website again for more information.
- 10:52It's wv Civicscoalition dot org. All right, Rebecca, I appreciate you
- 10:58being here. Good luck with your festivities. We'll talk talk again soon.
- 11:00Thanks a lot, all right, hope to see you there. All right.
- 11:03Thank you Rebecca Tender again as the president of the West Virginia Civics Coalition
- 11:07and appreciate her being there. And yeah, get these young young kids involved

- 14:50right now to talk about it. Chris, good morning, Welcome to the
- 14:52show. Hey Dave, thanks for having me on again. Thank you for
- 14:54being here. Yeah. Well, we're into our eighth Celtic Call in this
- 14:58year and lots of fun things lined up. All right, tell us about
- 15:03it. Well, it's starting on Wednesday, February the twenty eighth goes through
- 15:07the Sunday and there's events downtown and a few on the West side East End.
- 15:13We go up to spring Hill on Saturday for a five k run had
- 15:16in Kana State Forests. For the Irish Road Bowling on Sunday, you know,
- 15:22the big day is Saturday. There's events down at Slack Plaza. There's
- 15:26what we call the Cldic Village. There's over twenty five crafters. There's music
- 15:30and dance on a stage down there. This year we've got a Keldic pageant
- 15:35and you could win prizes and be the clan chieftain for the event walking the
- 15:41parade. So you know, if you want to be braveheart, dress up
- 15:46like William Wallace or a Celtic princess, you know, come on down.
- 15:50There's even prizes for the Bonnie Lassie and Bonnie Bonnie lad. Lots of children's
- 15:56activities down there. The dog show. You know, if you've got an
- 15:58Irish dwarfhound or if you've just got an old matt, dress them up in
- 16:03some CLDIC garb and we've got a Cldic fancy dresser thing for the dogs.
- 16:11So lots of things going on all over the place. Now you said that
- 16:14this is the eighth annual event, Is that right? Yeah? Of course
- 16:18everyone skipped one for well, So talk about the history of this event.
- 16:23I mean, I know you've been on the show in the past to talk
- 16:26about it, but for people are how did this whole thing get started?
- 16:30Started twenty sixteen, and you know kind of it was thought up mostly There's
- 16:37are a local organization called foot Mad Friends of Music at Old Time Music and
- 16:42Dance and they have a concert series and they had a Celtic group coming in,
- 16:47so you know, we thought we'd tag some events around that group coming
- 16:51in and the Justin Convention and Visitors Bureau thought that was a great idea because
- 16:56I have to winter. You know, people are dying to get out something
- 17:00and you know, help the downtown businesses and things like this. So you
- 17:04know, it brings people downtown. You know, people go out for something
- 17:07to eat, and you know it's just a good sort of celebration, you
- 17:12know, kind of like starts to outdoor entertainment industry off. Yeah. Really,
- 17:19And you know, in anytime you're talking about dealing with the end of
- 17:22February early March, the weather can be any number of things. You've probably
- 17:26of the year seen snow, rain, sun, temperatures in the seventies,
- 17:30temperatures in the thirties, looks pretty good. Though for this week. Well,
- 17:34you know when it started, the only things we really had outside we'd
- 17:38have like some Highland cows or some sheep, and everything was you know in
- 17:42the Canar Main Library or in Rock City or you know the businesses, tailors.
- 17:48Everything was pretty much inside. But after the COVID year, you know,
- 17:53more people wanted to be you know, do things outside. So that
- 17:56was the year that we broke the Guinness Book of Red Cards for the unicorn
- 18:00thing and we had Nicole back. I was telling somebody that story this morning.
- 18:04I remembered that explain what that world record was that was set. Basically
- 18:11the record was the largest number of people wearing a unicorn horn on the top
- 18:18of their head. And how many did we have? There were, oh
- 18:21it's around four hundred, around four hundred, you know, not earth shadowing,
- 18:25but you know that was like we had an event at Davis Park.
- 18:29Then we had a parade. That was the first year that we've done those
- 18:33and cross fingers. The weather's been nice for these outdoor events. People like
- 18:37that, so that's why we've still got the Keeldic Village thing going on this
- 18:44year. We've got four pipe bands. If you liked bagpipe bands, you
- 18:48know, might be a love hate relationship. But we've got our two local
- 18:52bands of Benny Kid and Highlanders and the Canal Valley Pipes and Drums, and
- 18:57we've got the group coming down from Elkins, the West Virginia Highlanders and Saint
- 19:03Andrew's Pipe bind from Parkersburg come in. So that will kind of make a
- 19:08mixed parade. You know, we'll have that clan shift and there's lots of
- 19:12civic organizations, you know, kind of other people in the parade. You
- 19:18can come down and carry a flag in it, you know, if you
- 19:22do have Scottish or Irish and ancestry and you want to kind of put your
- 19:26name up their where you family, Todden or whatever, you can be in
- 19:30the parade as well. You know, we're talking with Chris Higgins about the
- 19:33Celtic Colleague and you know, Chris, this is the kind of thing that
- 19:36you would expect to see in a city like a Pittsburgh or or Columbus or
- 19:41Charlotte. You wouldn't necessarily expect to see an activity like this in a city,
- 19:45even though Charleston is the largest city of the state. In a city
- 19:49like Charleston, that's kind of cool to have something of this magnitude in Charleston
- 19:53each year. Well it's you know, it's kind of a big undertaken and
- 19:59it's of but you know, it's great to have all these like cultural kind
- 20:04of events. You know. I like going to the Greek church, you
- 20:07know, for the Greek food, you know, and I think more of
- 20:10it is a good thing. And you don't have to have a kind of
- 20:14Celtic heritage or anything to enjoy any of these events. You know, they're
- 20:18just good fun events and you know, kids' activities grown up. You know,
- 20:25there's athletic kind of things, music, So it's just a great time
- 20:29to come out. Nine twenty eighth the day Island showing five ANU and I
- 20:33brought to you a part by Bridge Valley. If you're interested in improving your
- 20:34company's IT work force, you may want to know the Bridge Valley offers custom
- 20:38tailored IT trained the Bridge of Skills gap. At Bridge Valley, you can
- 20:41train for little or no cost with the fifty to fifty salary match. Bridge
- 20:45Valley can also supply skilled graduates and apprenticeships for your company. There's a Bridge
- 20:48Valley that eat use slash apprenticeships today for more information. Let's talk about the
- 20:52involvement of the kids. And there's a lot of activities for the kids here.
- 20:59Well, you know, the library do some great things. So the
- 21:02main library on Capitol Street, they've got a redbearded dragon coming in. If
- 21:07you've ever looked at the Welsh flag, there's a red dragon on it.
- 21:11So they've got story time. But down at the Slack Plaza event, we'll
- 21:15have a mini Scottish Highland game so kids can toss a caber tug of war.
- 21:22There's a lot of craft activities going on down there. So yeah,
- 21:27a lot of stuff for the kids. But just going back to the it's
- 21:32a big you know, the Irish Scottish thing. You know, West Virginia
- 21:36is settled by you know what they call the Scots Irish. You know,
- 21:40I work up at the cemetery at Spring Here where we have the Kilt Run,
- 21:45and if you go around and look at the gravestones and things, you
- 21:48know, you will see a lot of Irish Scottish names up there. So
- 21:52you know, there is that sort of cultural heritage. And you know when
- 21:56people think about the Appalachian music, old time music, fiddles and things,
- 22:00it really relates to you know that music, that's what all came from.
- 22:04I mean, if you look, I mean, I don't have any numbers
- 22:07of back this up, Chris, but I would think that if you if
- 22:10you looked at the heritage of the majority of West Virginians, it's going to
- 22:15it's going to somehow end up in Scotland or in Ireland at some point.
- 22:18So at least a lot of them, you know, some things. Some
- 22:22years we've had connections with those things. And we do have a storytelling compatition,
- 22:27which is you know, pretty it's kind of like they have the liars
- 22:30thing at Vandalia, you know, which is you know, people like the
- 22:34gift of the gap telling a yarn, you know, So it's one of
- 22:40but you know, probably the music is probably the closest thing connection this year.
- 22:45And the music is a is a big part of this because it's a
- 22:48big part of the heritage of that part of the world. Because it is
- 22:52and Friday night we've got a Kayley dance, which is Kayley it's kind of
- 22:56pretty much like a square dance, and you know that kind of stuff comes
- 23:02from those countries. The foot Mad organization bring in a chaotic group this year.
- 23:07They've got one from Scotland on Saturday night and they are at the forefront
- 23:14of kind of you know, new traditional music. But they do have the
- 23:18Scots Gaelic Traditional Singer of the Year a few years ago. She's a young
- 23:25girl and she's a beautiful voice, so you know that would be a great
- 23:30connection. Let's, you know, talk about what obviously, this is an
- 23:34event that you know, you have a lot of things for kids and for
- 23:37adults, but in order to keep these traditions alive, you've got to involve
- 23:42a lot of younger people. Because that's one of the things that they say
- 23:45about our society in general, is that traditions and whatnot just kind of go
- 23:49by the wayside with the passion of time. But if you get the younger
- 23:52people involved in, you're a whole lot more likely to have activities and the
- 23:57heritage and things like this continue well. Speaking to that, the library does
- 24:03have an Irish Scottish dance workshop for elementary kids. At Rock City, we
- 24:12do have a music thing on Saturday morning. There's like a harp Peden sou
- 24:18There's a very accomplished harpist playing there and she's going to bring in some folk
- 24:23harps. She's got a couple kids, so you know the kids would be
- 24:27or older children will be able to play the harps. After that, there's
- 24:32a couple who play music and they'll be explained, you know, playing on
- 24:36a lot of different instruments, bagpipes and flutes and fiddles and things, and
- 24:41they're explain the kind of jigs and reels, and they'll invite they're inviting young
- 24:47kids to play. You know, we've got some great young fiddlers kind of
- 24:52coming through. Some of them are playing in the Kayley Group on Friday night
- 24:56and you know, kind of these young people so busy they're playing sports on
- 25:03Saturday. I wanted them to play at the Keldic Village. But we do
- 25:07try and you know, get the kids involved with those kind of things.
- 25:11Yeah. Again, everything starts on Wednesday, is that right? Wednesday?
- 25:15At the bears Den of all places, we have a traditional music session Thursday.
- 25:21We've kind of you know, it's not just old traditions. We've got
- 25:23a horror movie, a Vampa horror movie from made in Dublin in twenty twenty
- 25:30one at the West Virginia International Film Festival, which has a small theater underneath
- 25:36Taylor Books. And then Friday. You know, it all kind of goes

- 26:19basically activities going on in just about every corner of town. Yeah, and
- 26:23you know there's local businesses and organizations who kind of put these things on.
- 26:29You know, Sam's has had from our Sam's Uptown Cafe has had from the
- 26:34start of Celdic Call and a CLDIC branch. Coming back to the church,
- 26:41Canal United Presbyterian has a service on Sunday which goes back into the roots of
- 26:47clodic history. It's called Kirken of the Tardans when the English band The Plaid
- 26:52in Scotland and then when they got it back they celebrated it in church with
- 26:57a blessing of the Tardens. But there's lots of organizations like foot Mad Kina

- 31:21I had the Convention and Visitor Bureau guy Tim Brady on the show talking about
- 31:25the fact that Charleston has now been awarded the what was known as the Super
- 31:29sixth, the Grade eight, Elite eight, whatever it's going to be called,
- 31:33Texas. Those kids will definitely remember they had to play in a high
- 31:37school stadium rather than a D one college stadium. I don't know exactly what
- 31:44went into the decision, and we talked about this on Friday's show. To
- 31:48land, I know, the city of Charles and put together a very very
- 31:51ambitious proposal and it was chosen. The city was over Wheeling to host the
- 31:56football championship, so that Wheeling had been there since the I mean been thirty
- 32:00years it's been in Wheeling was chosen over Bluefield, and it was chosen over
- 32:04what I understand was a combo effort between West Virginia University and Marshall University,
- 32:08whereas one year it would be at Mila Pushgar Stadium in Morgantown and the next
- 32:14year would be at Jones Edwards Stadium in Huntington, but Charleston was chosen.
- 32:17It will be at Ladley Field, the University of Charleston Field. And I
- 32:21absolutely I will say this though, and I know Tim Brady, and I
- 32:24know Tim Brady for a long long time, many many many years. Mister
- 32:29Brady and I have known each other. Tim Brady and the folks at the
- 32:32CVB and the Mayor's office and all the other entities had got a heck of
- 32:37a lot of work to do to get ready. And I'm sure they're up
- 32:39to the task. But it's a uh, it's a big undertake. Texas
- 32:46Civics absolutely is being taught. Our teachers are doing their job. When student
- 32:51achievement showed GPAs higher than four point zero versus four point zero max, the
- 32:55question becomes one of lowerd's standards. The number one deficit in civil understanding as
- 33:00I see the people of all ages, but especially students, what powers each
- 33:04body has? People blaming the state or for city street conditions, to EPA
- 33:09being responsible for water bills or just two examples. Plenty of ignorance still around,
- 33:14especially in our students, says a Texture. So I got to mention
- 33:20this this past Friday night, our sister station of which I am proud to
- 33:25be a part of, nine eight seven a mouth in wild, wonderful classic
- 33:29rock, we were invited to take part in what started out as a very
- 33:35tongue in cheek kind of event in Kanawa City. You know the story by
- 33:40now, I mean if you can't. If you don't know the story,
- 33:43I don't know where you've been. Because this has made nationwide and worldwide news.
- 33:46The Hooters restaurant chain of Kanaa City closed around the time of COVID in
- 33:52early twenty twenty and never reopened. COVID probably not the only reason it didn't
- 33:55make it, but let's focus on the positive here. A couple of guys
- 34:00learned that the building itself in kanas City was going to be torn down,
- 34:04and they wanted to honor it and remember all the good times they had there
- 34:07by holding this candlelight visual again more or less a joke, and until it
- 34:13took off and went viral. And now they already had a charitable event planned
- 34:17to raise money for a friend of theirs who's in need of a medical procedure
- 34:21or two. So that was previously scheduled for Saturday in Chesapeake. So they
- 34:27just kind of, I think, tied the two things together, and to
- 34:30say it was a success would be an understatement. At one time Friday night
- 34:37with off and on rain, I would say there was at peak around two
- 34:42hundred or more people there in Kanas City to pay tribute to the Hooters building
- 34:50that's being torn down. And I think that demolition was scheduled to begin this
- 34:53morning, I think, And of course, you know, they kind of
- 34:59invited to go along myself, Steve Animal and Shockley in a wild wide assortment
- 35:04of other people. There was former customers there, there were former employees.
- 35:07There were political figures, business leaders. There was a vanload of students from
- 35:14West Virginia Wesleyan who came down for this. There were people from the Charlotte,
- 35:21North Carolina area that showed up. There were people from South Carolina that
- 35:25showed up. There was media from all around the country there and again this
- 35:31thing got coverage in the London Times, It got coverage in Brazil. It
- 35:38was something to behold to say, the lease And if you just want to
- 35:42see how big the thing was, I've got pictures posted on Dave Island Radio
- 35:46on Facebook Plus. There are more on the Facebook page of nine eight seven
- 35:50The Mountain. It was just a fun night, no problems, no arrest
- 35:53or anything like that. And for the people who didn't get it, well,
- 36:00this is just me talking. I'm sorry you don't have a sense of
- 36:04humor or an appreciation of the important things in life. You know, good
- 36:09times, good friends, wings, beer, and well, of course Hooters.

- 38:19what a shocker. Public Service Commission bens over and gives West Virginian American
- 38:22Water Company another huge rate increase to top it off. The PSC then acts
- 38:25like it's just done the customers a favor. PSC should changed its name to
- 38:30USC, the Utility Service Commission. Actually, I had something I wanted to
- 38:35talk about with that, and I will get time. I will get to
- 38:40that coming up a little bit later on the show. There's a story Jeff
- 38:44has posted on the website wv Metro News about that wv Metro news dot Com
- 38:47about that rate increase. I'm going to get to that a little bit if
- 38:51I have time today. If not, we'll get to it tomorrow. I
- 38:53want to go national for a moment. As was expected. Over the weekend,
- 38:58Nikki Haley got it handed to her in her home state of South Carolina.
- 39:01And you know, it's not unusual for people to lose in their home
- 39:06state. It happens from time to time. But former President Trump continues to
- 39:10beat her everywhere. Everywhere there's an election, he wins, and he wins
- 39:15big. But for her part, Nicki Haley is not giving up. Although
- 39:22there are Republicans like myself who do not want another Trump term. But with
- 39:34Nicki Haley, there are those of us that say, you know, it's
- 39:36time, It's time. It was announced over the weekend that Americans for Prosperity,
- 39:40who had been backing Nicki Haley, are pulling their funds from her.
- 39:46They are seeing the writing on the wall here that Trump is going to be
- 39:50the nominee and he's going to face off against President Joe Biden in November,
- 39:55a matchup that the polls have shown almost no one wants. And for what
- 40:01it's worth, and we've talked about this on the show in the past,
- 40:04polling numbers also show that Biden beats Trump in November, but it probably won't
- 40:14matter because most of the hardcore Trump supporters not I said hardcore supporters. I'm
- 40:19not talking about ones who simply vote for the guy. I am talking about
- 40:22the hardcore Donald Trump supporters, the one that worship of the altar, and
- 40:29there are plenty of those. They're gonna say he didn't lose and we're gonna
- 40:35be back to twenty twenty one all over again. But again, the polls
- 40:37have shown, for what it's worth about polls, polls have shown that Nicky
- 40:43Hayley beats Joe Biden, and I had to head matchup so the GOP could
- 40:52have some sort of sanity and normalcy in the White House. And make no
- 40:58mistake about it, I'm not the big Nikki Haley fan either, but we
- 41:01could have a sense of normal back in the White House, but a great
- 41:07number of people in the Grand Old Party would rather have Trump. And in
- 41:13West Virginia elections, be it on the local level or the state level,
- 41:16it's a race to see who can be the biggest Trump lover. I'm more
- 41:22like Trump. I'm more like Trump. Trump likes me better. It's pathetic
- 41:30in the opinion of this lowly radio host. That's absolutely pathetic. But again,
- 41:36I'm way in a minority of most Republicans. So I'll just sit back
- 41:38and wait to see what happens, and to see if anyone within my my
- 41:44Republican party, uh well, has any sanity left. I am beginning to
- 41:52wonder. It is eleven minutes away from ten Bigley, Piggley Wiggley Hotline three

- 46:08you. I'm done with Trump. Not a Haley fan either, but why
- 46:13nominate someone that can win? Says a text. I wanted to kind of
- 46:17touch on this a little bit and a texture alluded to it earlier, and
- 46:21that was this rate increase in the West Virginian American water and what they were
- 46:25talking about. And again we have a story posted about at WV metronews dot
- 46:29com. The Stay Public Service Commission has approved an average eight percent rate increase
- 46:34in water and sewer rates for customers of Westerngian American Water. It's much less
- 46:40than what the company had wanted. They actually wanted a twenty two and a
- 46:44half percent increase, which would have been about forty one point two million dollars
- 46:47overall. So with this new plan, the average customer's bill will go up
- 46:53about five sixty nine a month. That's for water, and the average sewer
- 46:59bill will go up about five point fifty nine a month. Now, the
- 47:02increase actually is already kicked in. It kicked in with your usage with your
- 47:07morning shower on Saturday. It wastes a lot of time they were ready to
- 47:12go. Jeff Jenkins again when the story posted about it at WV metronews dot
- 47:15com. I want to go back to Thursday just for a moment, Remember
- 47:22when the country was losing their mind over the AT and T service being out
- 47:30Well, Alas and Ryan and I were just talking about this a little bit
- 47:32earlier. You're about to get paid a whopping five dollars for your troubles.
- 47:39AT and T has all the information posted on their website that you if you
- 47:45were one of the ones. It sounds like the attorney commercials now if you
- 47:47were injured, but the you if you were one of the ones that was
- 47:53without your AT and T service on Thursday, you could qualify for a get
- 48:00ready a five dollars credit, which they say is the estimated average cost for
- 48:07a full day of service. Now, the outage affected not only phones,
- 48:13but also AT and T Internet as well. Now, I'm a Verizon customer,
- 48:17and I'm not choosing one or the other. Just so happens in my
- 48:21family plan. My wife and I were Verizon customers. We were not affected.
- 48:25But it is interesting to see how much our phones totally control our lives.
- 48:32Now, I mean, people were losing their minds on Thursday, and
- 48:37I get the business aspect of it. I was talking to a friend of
- 48:39mine who does radio sales, and he said, well, if I don't
- 48:42have my phone, I can't work. I get that completely. But you
- 48:45know, our phones now control just about every aspect of our lives. You
- 48:52know, you go into a restaurant, many want you to scan and download
- 48:55their menus to your phone. Of places, you can't use cash anymore,
- 49:02they want you to use an app on your phone. And you know,
- 49:07I've often said that if I had kids, in the world ain't ready for
- 49:10that. But if I would have had kids, I always said, my
- 49:14kid would not have a cell phone until they started driving at the earliest.
- 49:20Well, having a discussion with a buddy of mine who just happened to have
- 49:23a couple of kids in high school, and he said that phones are now
- 49:28required for kids. For his kids, now, they're required for their schooling,
- 49:34their apps and things of that nature where they find out all their information
- 49:38about their practices and extracurricular activities and so on and so forth. I mean,
- 49:44I know, it's crazy the world we live in now. But as
- 49:45they say, you can't put the milk back in the carton, and now
- 49:52we end of the world of AI artificial intelligence. You know, I get
- 49:58emails within this company that I know the person on the other end did not
- 50:04write. It's AI. Radio scripts sometimes now being written by AI. I
- 50:14have a friend that does radio in the state of Georgia, and a couple
- 50:19of weeks ago he sent me some examples of commercials that were done with AI,
- 50:23no humans whatsoever. It was his AI. He sent them to me,
- 50:29texted them to me, said, give these a listen and no humans,
- 50:34AI doing your local car commercial. And and I know that I have
- 50:39become that old commercial. Well what do I mean become I've been that.
- 50:44I was born old, I think. But I do know this. I
- 50:47think I'm one of the people that just longs for a simpler time. I
- 50:53still like to call people on the phone. Yeah, I actually like to
- 50:57pick up the phone and call people. Or better yet, in the business
- 51:00world, if given the opportunity to exchange emails or text or whatever, I'd
- 51:08actually rather go see them in person. And I'm a person who doesn't really
- 51:13like people. I'd rather do that. I still pay cash ninety five percent
- 51:19of the time for everything, and I've never ordered a single thing from Amazon.
- 51:22I know I'm a relic. I'll be dead in another twenty years,
- 51:25so you don't have to worry about it. Let me close with this.
- 51:29Did you happen to catch Charleston being spotlighted on the ABC television show What Would
- 51:34You Do? I did not. The show is hosted by John Quinona's and
- 51:37the concept is they have actors act out certain scenes in public just to see
- 51:43how the public will react to it. Well, last night the ones filmed
- 51:45in Charleston aired again. I didn't see it, but our friends at V
- 51:49one hundred shared the list of what was filmed in Charleston, and I in
- 51:52turn shared that on the Dave Alan Radio Facebook page. You may want to
- 51:57go check that out. The filming was done at Black Sheet Burritos and the
- 52:00Purple Onion over at Capital Market. Again. I have this schedule posted courtesy
- 52:04of V one hundred, so you may want to go check that out.
- 52:08All right, gotta go. I will close with this very very quickly.
- 52:13No death penalty in the legislature this year, hoppy xing that out that Senator
- 52:19Stewart and Senator Blair say they will not. There will not be death penalty
- 52:22on the up for a vote in this legislative session. All right, gotta
- 52:25go. My thanks to all our guest today, the callers in Texas,
- 52:29to Ryan Nicholson, our producer, thank you so much. Coming up on
- 52:31the show tomorrow, we're gonna have Canawa County Commissioner Lance Wheeler hear the people
- 52:35from the upcoming Tunnels to Tower event, and Alexander Gasserud, who is a
