- 0:00Hey y'all, it's friendsly welcome back to In the
- 0:03Stillness. Thanks for joining me on yet
- 0:06another podcast episode. It is Friday, we made it to the
- 0:10end of another week, and I'm just so, so very grateful to sit
- 0:15down together and to be able to read through the Word of God and
- 0:20go through takeaways that He kinda taught me throughout my
- 0:24quiet time. I am going to be honest that the
- 0:28verses I'm reading through today can feel a little overwhelming
- 0:32and theological at first glance. John starts talking about water
- 0:38and blood and testimony. And if you're reading quickly,
- 0:43you might think, OK, what is going on here?
- 0:47But the more that I sat with this passage and just asked the
- 0:51Holy Spirit to continue teaching me and revealing things in the
- 0:55truth, the more I realized this is actually so foundational.
- 0:59If we misunderstand Jesus, we misunderstand salvation itself.
- 1:05So I just want to slowly break it down together and hopefully a
- 1:10very understandable practical way for y'all while staying
- 1:14deeply rooted in the Scripture. So let's go ahead and read
- 1:17through the passage. It's first John chapter 5,
- 1:21verses 6 to 9. Jesus Christ is the one who was
- 1:27revealed as God's Son by his water baptism and by the blood
- 1:32of his cross, not by water only, but by water and blood.
- 1:38And the Spirit, who is truth, confirms this with His
- 1:42testimony. So we have these three constant
- 1:46witnesses giving their evidence, the Spirit, the water, and the
- 1:51blood. And these three are in
- 1:54agreement. If we accept the testimony of
- 1:57men, how much more should we accept the more authoritative
- 2:01testimony of God that He has testified concerning His Son?
- 2:07OK, there is a lot packed into those few verses, but at the
- 2:12time that John wrote this there were some false teachings
- 2:16circulating and they were basically saying Jesus is just
- 2:21an ordinary human until his baptism.
- 2:24Some believed the Christ or divinity of him came upon him at
- 2:30his baptism, but then it left before he passed away on the
- 2:33cross. And I just want to think about
- 2:38if Jesus was merely a man then it would not have been possible
- 2:43for him to carry the sins of the world.
- 2:46A sinful human cannot absorb the wrath of God deserved for all of
- 2:50humanity. Only a holy imperfect savior
- 2:54could do that. Only a move of God could remove
- 2:59our punishment for sin. So the bottom line is that
- 3:03salvation begins and ends in Jesus.
- 3:07That is why John one verse one says in the beginning was the
- 3:11Word and the Word was with God and the Word was God.
- 3:16And then verse 14 says the Word became flesh and dwelt among us.
- 3:22So Jesus did not become divine later in his life.
- 3:26He has always been God, fully God and fully man.
- 3:31And John is defending that truth here.
- 3:34He is saying that the water, the blood, and the Spirit all
- 3:39testify to who Jesus really is. Now I would say most theologians
- 3:46believe the water refers to Jesus's baptism and the blood
- 3:50refers to his crucifixion. That's more of the widespread
- 3:54take on this. At his baptism, heaven testified
- 3:58about Jesus. We see in Matthew 3 verses 16 to
- 4:0217 that after Jesus was baptized by John the Baptist, the heavens
- 4:07opened and the Spirit descended like a dove.
- 4:10And we see the Father say, This is my beloved Son, with whom I
- 4:15am well pleased. So God the Father affirmed Jesus
- 4:20publicly. And then the blood of the cross
- 4:23testified too, because Jesus physically suffered and died as
- 4:28the spotless lamb sacrificed for sin.
- 4:32This was not just symbolical or partial, it was quite literal.
- 4:37Hebrews 9 verse 22 says without the shedding of blood there is
- 4:42no forgiveness of sins. And then first Peter one verse
- 4:4618 and 19 tells us that we are redeemed with the precious blood
- 4:51of Christ, like that of a lamb without blemish or spot.
- 4:56Now there's another layer that some believe John may be
- 4:59pointing to here. The moment after Jesus died,
- 5:03when the soldier pierced his side in John 19 verse 34, it
- 5:07says immediately blood and water came out.
- 5:12Now this is just completely crazy and intentional in God's
- 5:17part. It wrecked me during my quiet
- 5:20time when I realized how beautifully it connects to the
- 5:23bigger story of scripture. So way back in Genesis, the very
- 5:27first book of the Bible, God caused Adam to fall into a deep
- 5:32sleep and when he did so, he opened his side so that he could
- 5:36form his bride, Eve from Adam and then Fast forward to Jesus.
- 5:43He is referred to as the second Adam in the Bible, and Jesus
- 5:48enters the sleep of death. His side is pierced, and then
- 5:53blood and water pours out, as we see in Scripture.
- 5:57So through his sacrifice and through the Spirit, we are then
- 6:01born again. We become the bride of Christ,
- 6:05just as Eve was Adam's bride. And that is such a cool
- 6:10revelation of how interweaved the Bible is from beginning to
- 6:14end. And even though there are
- 6:18differing opinions on some theological details in this
- 6:21passage, the central truth is crystal clear.
- 6:26Jesus is truly the Son of God, and salvation is found in Jesus
- 6:30alone. And I think that's what the Lord
- 6:34kept highlighting to me while reading this.
- 6:37Instead of getting just kind of bogged down by all the
- 6:40theological things, it was reminding me how important it is
- 6:45to actually know what you believe about Jesus and to know
- 6:49why you believe it. It's not based on culture, it's
- 6:54not just on Instagram reels that you see or scroll past, it's not
- 6:58based on what sounds appealing, but it has to be centered and
- 7:03rooted on the Word of God. Y'all, the world will absolutely
- 7:08try to redefine Jesus for you. Some people want Jesus in His
- 7:14comfort without obeying his commands.
- 7:17Some want a version of him that never fully confronts their sin
- 7:22or calls them higher and forces them to confess and repent.
- 7:27But we do not get to create our own version of Jesus.
- 7:31Scripture already reveals who he is.
- 7:35So I think an important question to ask ourselves today is this.
- 7:40Are you following the real Jesus as seen in the Bible or possibly
- 7:46a customized version that feels more comfortable to your flesh?
- 7:52Jesus said in John 14 verse 15, If you love me, keep my
- 7:57commandments. So obedience and submission is
- 8:02significant. And it matters not because God
- 8:06is just trying to control us, but His ways really do lead to
- 8:11life. And this passage also reminded
- 8:14me how important it is to stay anchored in the truth so that we
- 8:19are not easily swayed by deception or confusion in this
- 8:23world. Ephesians 4 talks about not
- 8:25being tossed to and fro by the waves and carried about by every
- 8:30wind of doctrine or teaching. So that is why we have to
- 8:35examine what we hear through Scripture.
- 8:38Are you passively consuming things online, or are you
- 8:42actively seeking out the truth? When you hear a teaching, are
- 8:47you comparing it and validating it to the Bible?
- 8:52Do you actually spend time in the Word for yourself?
- 8:56Are you allowing Scripture to shape your beliefs or are you
- 9:00choosing only parts of Jesus's teaching that you like?
- 9:06Because the Spirit is one of the witnesses that John mentions to
- 9:10us here. Verse 6 says the Spirit who is
- 9:15truth confirms this with his testimony and Jesus says in John
- 9:221717, sanctify them in the truth.
- 9:26Your word is truth. The Holy Spirit will never
- 9:29contradict the Word of God. He always leads us deeper into
- 9:34truth, deeper into holiness, deeper into the reality of
- 9:38Jesus. In Galatians 5 says, since we
- 9:42live by the Spirit, may we keep in step with the Spirit.
- 9:47I also love remembering that John writes all of this as an
- 9:52eyewitness. At the very beginning of this
- 9:54letter. He talks about hearing and
- 9:57seeing Jesus, quite literally touching him.
- 10:01John walked with Jesus. He was one of his closest and
- 10:05dearest friends. And honestly, I think John
- 10:09writes a lot of these theological things to silence
- 10:12our doubts. Because think about it, we
- 10:16believe human testimonies all the time.
- 10:19We hear people telling us about their own stories of
- 10:23transformation, freedom, encounters with God.
- 10:28So why would we minimize God's own testimony and truth about
- 10:32his Son? God is perfect, so his testimony
- 10:37is perfect too. Maybe another thing for you guys
- 10:41to reflect on today is this. Is there something that you're
- 10:45struggling to fully believe Jesus for right now?
- 10:50Maybe it's healing, a transformed mind, purity, a
- 10:55breakthrough, possibly a deeper understanding of who he is.
- 11:00Why would we limit him if he truly is the Son of God who came
- 11:06down to save us, restore and make all things new?
- 11:11Guys, there is so much evidence of who Jesus is.
- 11:16The Spirit testifies, the water testifies, the blood testifies,
- 11:22Scripture testifies, and the same Jesus who conquered death
- 11:28is still alive and still moving today.
- 11:32So I think that these verses ultimately call us into a faith
- 11:37that is not shaky, not just built on feelings, not dependent
- 11:43on culture trends, but in a faith that is rooted in the
- 11:48truth of who Jesus is. So let's pray together now.
- 11:54Dear Jesus, thank you for showing us yourself so clearly
- 12:03through your word. Thank you that you really are
- 12:06the Son of God, our Redeemer, our perfect sacrifice, the Lamb
- 12:12of Godfather. Would you anchor us more deeply
- 12:17in truth, protect us from deception and from confusion?
- 12:24Would you help us not to create some version of you that fits
- 12:27our preferences, but instead to fully surrender to who you truly
- 12:34are? Holy Spirit, would you lead us
- 12:37and guide us into your truth, deeper into obedience, into
- 12:42further intimacy with you? Jesus, if there are any areas
- 12:47that we are struggling to believe you more fully, would
- 12:51you strengthen our faith and remind us that absolutely
- 12:55nothing is impossible for you? We love you, Jesus, We thank you
- 13:01for your sacrifice, for everything that you went through
- 13:04on our behalf so that we could be one with you.
- 13:09We ask all these things in your name, Jesus.
- 13:12Amen. OK guys, that's today's podcast
- 13:15episode. Praying for y'all as you head

- 13:22see y'all on the next episode.
