- 0:06Speaker 1: Welcome into Northside Territory. Foul Territory Networks Cubs Podcast. I'm
- 0:09Speaker 1: Sahadev Sharma with my partner Patrick Mooney. We are your
- 0:13Speaker 1: Cubs beat writers over at the Athletic Patrick. The Cubs. Uh,
- 0:18Speaker 1: you know, so so weekend in Houston. Uh, stymied by
- 0:22Speaker 1: a lefty once again, a stud lefty and Framber Veldez.
- 0:25Speaker 2: And then uh, and then is that is that who
- 0:29Speaker 2: it was? Yeah?
- 0:29Speaker 1: Framber I always get Christian Basquez and Framer Vellas mixed
- 0:33Speaker 1: up in my brain. Wants to wants to change who
- 0:36Speaker 1: they are.
- 0:36Speaker 2: Uh.
- 0:37Speaker 1: And then and then they took the first against Cleveland
- 0:40Speaker 1: after a day off, you know, much needed day.
- 0:43Speaker 2: Off with a lot of games in June. July starts
- 0:46Speaker 2: off on a on a good note. Uh.
- 0:49Speaker 1: That weird was at the second inning. That really weird,
- 0:52Speaker 1: like it could have been a huge inning. They got
- 0:54Speaker 1: three runs and then that that was the difference, but
- 0:56Speaker 1: still the weird way to kind of run your way
- 1:00Speaker 1: out of an inning.
- 1:02Speaker 2: But get the win. That's all that matters. And Jed
- 1:05Speaker 2: Hoyer talked before the game.
- 1:09Speaker 1: Uh, you know it's been it's you know, as accessible
- 1:13Speaker 1: as Jet has been. I feel like maybe maybe I
- 1:15Speaker 1: missed his last session, but I feel like it's been
- 1:17Speaker 1: a little while for Jet.
- 1:18Speaker 2: It was a.
- 1:20Speaker 1: Long time in between sitting with the media at Wrigley,
- 1:26Speaker 1: it was a trade deadline focus. I'm not sure, maybe
- 1:29Speaker 1: maybe one or two other questions beyond trade deadline finances.
- 1:34Speaker 1: I think that's what we know what they're you know,
- 1:37Speaker 1: they have a priority list as far as what they're doing.
- 1:41Speaker 1: I think starting pitching, a depth when it comes to relievers,
- 1:46Speaker 1: maybe maybe something big when it comes to relievers, we'll see,
- 1:50Speaker 1: can't rule it out.
- 1:52Speaker 2: And then a right.
- 1:52Speaker 1: Handed bat like those are the those are the three needs.
- 1:57Speaker 1: And I think what we got from Jet is they
- 2:00Speaker 1: have the money to go make moves.
- 2:03Speaker 2: What does that mean.
- 2:04Speaker 1: I don't know exactly, but you know, I don't think
- 2:07Speaker 1: money is going to be a limiting factor or a
- 2:10Speaker 1: huge limiting factor, especially if it's just deals that are
- 2:14Speaker 1: for this season, because I mean, how hard, like, how
- 2:17Speaker 1: much money can you actually add to the payroll when
- 2:19Speaker 1: it's you know, a third of the season, half the
- 2:21Speaker 1: season left.
- 2:24Speaker 3: Exactly. Yeah, well, we'll kind of see you one sort
- 2:28Speaker 3: of disclaimer just Jed gave across all this. You know,
- 2:32Speaker 3: a lot will happened between now and then. You know,
- 2:35Speaker 3: there's roughly whatever twenty five games you know during that
- 2:39Speaker 3: span before teams really have to make final decisions and
- 2:45Speaker 3: put their pencils down. As Jed would say, that's one
- 2:47Speaker 3: of his favorite things, you know, when the test ends.
- 2:51Speaker 3: But yeah, several obvious areas for the Cubs to.
- 2:57Speaker 2: Upgrade.
- 2:58Speaker 3: And I thought it was interesting that you had asked
- 3:01Speaker 3: the hot of of like, okay, well can you take
- 3:04Speaker 3: on money.
- 3:05Speaker 2: Into the future.
- 3:06Speaker 3: And obviously kind of the sub text to that is
- 3:11Speaker 3: Jed entering this year the final season of his contract,
- 3:16Speaker 3: a CBA that runs out after twenty twenty six, a
- 3:22Speaker 3: nucleus that is largely tied up through twenty twenty six.
- 3:28Speaker 3: That there is what he called in response to your question,
- 3:32Speaker 3: the double edged sword of having really clean books is
- 3:35Speaker 3: that they have a lot of flexibility moving forward. But
- 3:39Speaker 3: I think to mix another metaphor that he had used
- 3:42Speaker 3: at the beginning of his presidential tenure here in Chicago
- 3:46Speaker 3: was you don't want to fall off a cliff, you
- 3:49Speaker 3: know that you kind of run towards the edge. And
- 3:54Speaker 3: obviously twenty twenty one the Cubs, you know, decided to
- 3:58Speaker 3: back away and kind of reset, and that is definitely
- 4:03Speaker 3: a fear within the organization right of looking at I
- 4:08Speaker 3: don't think it's the number one priority here, but it's
- 4:10Speaker 3: also something I think that they can never ignore of
- 4:13Speaker 3: just the idea that what ownership wants is that sustainable,
- 4:17Speaker 3: consistent contender, not necessarily a team that's like all in
- 4:22Speaker 3: for any one season.
- 4:24Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, this will this can be a topic
- 4:28Speaker 1: that we dive into another date, but it's certainly I mean,
- 4:31Speaker 1: there's a lot of free agents after twenty six, say
- 4:35Speaker 1: Ian Hap, Matthew Boyd, who will talk about later, jameson
- 4:40Speaker 1: Tie owned pretty much it's just Dansby and then you
- 4:44Speaker 1: have guys you know that are young, that are pre
- 4:48Speaker 1: orb or getting close to urb like Michael Bush and
- 4:52Speaker 1: Pek Arms are certainly people that you want the Cubs
- 4:55Speaker 1: to keep around. We'll see how Miguel Amaya plays when
- 4:58Speaker 1: he comes back. That it sounds like it'll be post
- 5:01Speaker 1: All Star break the you know that that type of
- 5:05Speaker 1: those type of players will be around past twenty twenty six,
- 5:07Speaker 1: and that's great when you have that type of youth.
- 5:10Speaker 2: But it is it. He did not want this cliff
- 5:15Speaker 2: that you lamented it.
- 5:16Speaker 1: He talked about it was it before? Whenever it was,
- 5:20Speaker 1: it was either before or after twenty one. How I
- 5:23Speaker 1: talked about teams that hit that cliff, like Philadelphia and
- 5:26Speaker 1: that Philadelphia of the early two thousand Tens Tigers yea,
- 5:30Speaker 1: Allians Tigers. Yeah, these teams that are finally now getting
- 5:34Speaker 1: back to being great again after after you know, having
- 5:38Speaker 1: consistent winners for years and pushing.
- 5:40Speaker 2: It all the way to the end.
- 5:41Speaker 1: Out of the Cubs handle that that that may be
- 5:43Speaker 1: a topic that we're talking about in the offseason. Maybe
- 5:45Speaker 1: they make some interesting decisions to kind of extend a window.
- 5:49Speaker 2: Uh, we'll see what that is.
- 5:51Speaker 1: I think it is important that you you asked about
- 5:55Speaker 1: the war chest.
- 5:56Speaker 3: Right there is no war chest.
- 5:58Speaker 1: Yeah, Jed said there was no war chest, you know.
- 6:01Speaker 1: I think that was it was that Jed Hoyer frustrated
- 6:06Speaker 1: in the moment about Ultimately it was him saying, what
- 6:10Speaker 1: are we saving money for. Let's go out and get
- 6:14Speaker 1: this guy that can be a finishing piece for our
- 6:17Speaker 1: great to take us from very good to great. Yeah,
- 6:22Speaker 1: during the Alex Bergman sweepstakes, and obviously that didn't happen.
- 6:27Speaker 1: I think ultimately we knew if they are good enough,
- 6:32Speaker 1: there will be financial flexibility, and that's essentially what I
- 6:36Speaker 1: got from Jed's answered question about that.
- 6:40Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean the team is playing well, he said,
- 6:44Speaker 3: this place, meaning Wrigley is packed almost every night. You know,
- 6:48Speaker 3: it's close to a full house. And you know, I
- 6:53Speaker 3: would give the Cubs the benefit of the doubt here
- 6:56Speaker 3: in terms of, you know, Tom Ricketts gives his top
- 7:00Speaker 3: bug executives a lot of latitude. The Cubs have historically
- 7:04Speaker 3: been very active one way or the other at almost
- 7:08Speaker 3: every trade deadline going all the way back to theo's
- 7:13Speaker 3: first year in Chicago, and that if Jed can not
- 7:21Speaker 3: just add rentals, but also add guys who come with
- 7:26Speaker 3: multiple years or an additional season of club control, that
- 7:31Speaker 3: could be valuable and you know, being able to take
- 7:34Speaker 3: on that money or kind of invest farther into the
- 7:38Speaker 3: future beyond his own contract term. It's something that Jed
- 7:42Speaker 3: said he's not concerned about at all, doesn't really think
- 7:45Speaker 3: about it. I'd imagine that on a case by case basis,
- 7:49Speaker 3: he would kind of present these ideas to ownership and
- 7:53Speaker 3: they're largely you know, supportive. Let him do what he
- 7:58Speaker 3: wants within these financial parameters. Obviously, but if I think
- 8:03Speaker 3: if there's a there are baseball trades out there that
- 8:06Speaker 3: makes sense for the Cubs. They can go for it,
- 8:10Speaker 3: and I do think, you know what, I'd ask them
- 8:13Speaker 3: out this idea of like if not now when that's
- 8:15Speaker 3: what THEO famously said when they traded for old As
- 8:17Speaker 3: Chapman and get an interesting answer in terms of, like,
- 8:21Speaker 3: you know, that was a World Series odd it's not
- 8:25Speaker 3: a playoff chances type of deal, and that there's a
- 8:28Speaker 3: difference between just getting in and building the best possible
- 8:31Speaker 3: team to win multiple rounds in October.
- 8:34Speaker 2: But I don't know.
- 8:36Speaker 3: I still look at this situation. He didn't want to
- 8:38Speaker 3: go there yet. You know, they could lose six games
- 8:42Speaker 3: in a row and a couple of teams in Central
- 8:43Speaker 3: could get hot, and all of a sudden.
- 8:44Speaker 2: They're kind of scrambling just to get in.
- 8:49Speaker 3: But to me, you've got Kyle Tucker and we'll get
- 8:53Speaker 3: into that shortly. You know, months away from a few
- 8:57Speaker 3: months away from free agency. You have a front office
- 9:00Speaker 3: that was on the hot seat entering this year. You
- 9:03Speaker 3: have a team that's playing really well. You have pie
- 9:06Speaker 3: Crow Armstrong what might be the best season of his life.
- 9:09Speaker 3: We don't know. I think he's gonna be a good
- 9:10Speaker 3: player for a long time, but he's obviously come on
- 9:14Speaker 3: in just an unbelievable way. You have all these bullpen
- 9:17Speaker 3: guys that we've talked about from Daniel Pelonci and Drew Palm, Rantz,
- 9:21Speaker 3: Brad Keller. List kind of goes on and on of
- 9:24Speaker 3: just these pleasant surprises.
- 9:25Speaker 2: That keep happening.
- 9:26Speaker 3: You have one of the you know, most respected, highest
- 9:31Speaker 3: paid managers in the game running your team. You got
- 9:34Speaker 3: good vibes in the clubhouses like why not go out?
- 9:39Speaker 3: Who cares if you know some prospect in a ball
- 9:43Speaker 3: becomes an All Star seven years from now. I just
- 9:46Speaker 3: think this moment demands, you know, aggressive moves to try
- 9:53Speaker 3: and go in a World Series like period.
- 9:55Speaker 2: Yeah, no, I agree with you.
- 9:57Speaker 1: I think there may be some push and pull in
- 9:59Speaker 1: the run off is trying to balance that. Uh well,
- 10:03Speaker 1: but this is a very good team with some obvious
- 10:08Speaker 1: areas to upgrade. Uh you know, two weeks ago, whatever
- 10:12Speaker 1: it was, I was saying, there's no obvious way to
- 10:14Speaker 1: upgrade third. Maybe there is now with the with the
- 10:18Speaker 1: Diamondbacks struggling, the Diamondbacks are going to wait till the
- 10:22Speaker 1: last minute and unless they really collapse here and fall,
- 10:25Speaker 1: you know, eight nine, ten games out of the wildcard. Uh,
- 10:29Speaker 1: but they're struggling, they're they're falling back. And if if
- 10:33Speaker 1: they're if they're you know, pushing to double digit games
- 10:36Speaker 1: back of the wildcard, I could see them selling. And
- 10:38Speaker 1: Suarez is an impending free agent and he kind of
- 10:42Speaker 1: fits exactly.
- 10:43Speaker 2: What they need.
- 10:44Speaker 1: Uh as far as right handed bat can play third base.
- 10:49Speaker 1: Other than that, I think that the you know, the
- 10:51Speaker 1: focus has to be pitching, pitching, pitching, and you.
- 10:54Speaker 2: Upgrade that area.
- 10:55Speaker 1: Now you're talking about a really good team that goes
- 10:58Speaker 1: to great and and now has been and then you're
- 11:02Speaker 1: talking about upgrading World Series odds. Patrick, I want to
- 11:06Speaker 1: discuss the Kyle Talker discussion that we had with Jed
- 11:11Speaker 1: and just kind of get into gigantic contract talk and
- 11:16Speaker 1: the possibilities of that.
- 11:17Speaker 2: Once again, quick break here, all.
- 11:20Speaker 4: Right, Harry's is going to get an award here MVP
- 11:23Speaker 4: in the shaving world and AJ if you want to
- 11:25Speaker 4: equate it to things that we talk about, it's not
- 11:29Speaker 4: expensive and it's super versatile right the company itself, because
- 11:35Speaker 4: there's other products that you can get on the site
- 11:37Speaker 4: do odorate, body wash, et cetera. But for your everyday
- 11:40Speaker 4: shaving needs. Harry's has you covered, and you look at
- 11:43Speaker 4: the pricing, you look at the quality, and you're like, wait,
- 11:45Speaker 4: why was I using the old classic brand for a
- 11:48Speaker 4: long time.
- 11:49Speaker 5: Listen to somebody right now that needs a Harry's. I've
- 11:52Speaker 5: just been lazy. Harry's. I have plenty of them lined
- 11:55Speaker 5: up or need to use. You can use them for
- 11:56Speaker 5: more than one shave, which is huge for me, and
- 11:58Speaker 5: the pricing is right. I gotta go get my Hars
- 12:01Speaker 5: because my neck beard is sick. But Harry's will fix that.
- 12:04Speaker 5: It'll line me up straight and no bumps, no cuts.
- 12:07Speaker 5: It's exactly what I need for a great price.
- 12:09Speaker 2: That's right.
- 12:09Speaker 4: Get the edge on your shave with Harry's. Normally their
- 12:12Speaker 4: trial set is ten dollars, but right now you can
- 12:14Speaker 4: get it for just six dollars at Harry's dot com
- 12:16Speaker 4: slash fowl. That's our exclusive link, Harry's dot com slash
- 12:19Speaker 4: foul for a six dollars trial set.
- 12:23Speaker 2: Patrick get you know, we talked to Jed Hoyer.
- 12:25Speaker 1: I think the first time we talked to him this season,
- 12:30Speaker 1: maybe even the spring. He said, how many times am
- 12:32Speaker 1: I gonna have to no comment on this on this
- 12:34Speaker 1: contract extension talk, but he kind of touched on it,
- 12:38Speaker 1: you know, he didn't, he didn't, he didn't say that
- 12:41Speaker 1: he that the first to go around. I think we
- 12:44Speaker 1: pushed and we got more answers than expected.
- 12:47Speaker 2: Uh with with this, Yeah, I.
- 12:50Speaker 3: Think my takeaway was when Jed says at some point
- 12:57Speaker 3: we'll get into that with Casey Close, Bocker's agent at
- 13:01Speaker 3: Excel Sports Management, that sort of implies that they haven't
- 13:07Speaker 3: gained a ton of traction or really pushed in that area,
- 13:12Speaker 3: and I don't think anyone thought they would, Like that's
- 13:16Speaker 3: not how the Cubs operate in terms of making some
- 13:21Speaker 3: sort of enormous blind bid for a player who is
- 13:26Speaker 3: so close to free agency that it makes sense for
- 13:30Speaker 3: him to let this play out, and him having a
- 13:34Speaker 3: great first half only reinforces that belief that I personally
- 13:39Speaker 3: think it makes a lot of sense for both sides
- 13:43Speaker 3: to see.
- 13:43Speaker 2: What the market will bear.
- 13:46Speaker 3: And I guess there's always that one percent chance that
- 13:52Speaker 3: something could come together later this summer, but like, there's
- 13:57Speaker 3: no real precedent for this, there's no real like urgency
- 14:03Speaker 3: to do that, And to me, this was it was
- 14:06Speaker 3: a deal to win big in twenty twenty five. Then
- 14:08Speaker 3: you just figure out the rest later, and you don't.
- 14:11Speaker 3: You can't look back and be like, oh, camp Smith,
- 14:14Speaker 3: that was the guy that the Astros wanted. Camp Smith
- 14:19Speaker 3: would not be playing for the Cubs. He certain wouldn't
- 14:22Speaker 3: have started on their opening day roster. I kind of
- 14:26Speaker 3: doubt he'd even be up by this point on this
- 14:29Speaker 3: Cubs team. But yeah, I mean it's great content. It's
- 14:34Speaker 3: certainly like fun to talk about. But I just don't
- 14:37Speaker 3: think there's a whole lot of there there right now.
- 14:40Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, extension in season just you know, that
- 14:47Speaker 1: just seems so far fetched to me, when you're this
- 14:49Speaker 1: close to free agency, when you're the obvious top of
- 14:53Speaker 1: the market guy, when you're having I think he's having
- 14:57Speaker 1: a career year. You know, he's at four war according
- 15:02Speaker 1: to Fangrafts. His career best is five. This is I mean,
- 15:07Speaker 1: we're halfway through the season and he's at four war.
- 15:11Speaker 1: You don't sign an extension at that point.
- 15:15Speaker 2: Why why would he?
- 15:16Speaker 1: It just doesn't make sense to me why he would.
- 15:20Speaker 1: He's doing the right thing for him, unless he just
- 15:23Speaker 1: falls in love with Chicago and they offer him an
- 15:25Speaker 1: astronomical price. I think that also, you know, he jed
- 15:30Speaker 1: did say something like something about like that it's going
- 15:34Speaker 1: to costle. He acknowledged that the costs would be crazy,
- 15:38Speaker 1: and he's like, have limits. I think I think we
- 15:42Speaker 1: need to listen to that. We need to hear that
- 15:45Speaker 1: you have to have limits. I do wonder where this
- 15:48Speaker 1: is going to go. We're going to see some teams
- 15:52Speaker 1: in it that you know. I mean, Boston's going to
- 15:55Speaker 1: be in it, The Yankees are probably going to be
- 15:58Speaker 1: in it. The Dodgers are always is just kind of
- 16:01Speaker 1: in it. Even you think they're done, but why not
- 16:05Speaker 1: just keep spending more? I think the Giants may be
- 16:09Speaker 1: in it. These are all the teams that you kind
- 16:13Speaker 1: of look at and say, outside of the Mets. The
- 16:16Speaker 1: Mets are probably the one team that probably aren't going
- 16:19Speaker 1: to be in it, but maybe they are. I mean,
- 16:21Speaker 1: do we even rule them out? So this guy like
- 16:25Speaker 1: he's having a monster season. I think what I'm curious about,
- 16:31Speaker 1: and what I have this internal debate about, is okay
- 16:33Speaker 1: Wan Soto deal fifteen years, seven hundred and sixty five million.
- 16:36Speaker 1: I don't think we'll see something like that again, you know,
- 16:39Speaker 1: unless there's a Shoho Tani type player that shows up.
- 16:44Speaker 1: I just don't think we'll see something like that again
- 16:46Speaker 1: anytime soon. The Lad Junior deal is interesting at fourteen
- 16:51Speaker 1: five hundred million, and I seem to see people thinking
- 16:56Speaker 1: he needs to top that. What started this season twenty
- 17:00Speaker 1: five years old. Kyle Tucker is gonna start next season
- 17:04Speaker 1: twenty nine years old. That's really different. I know, like
- 17:11Speaker 1: they're similar offensive, like purely at the plate, what they
- 17:14Speaker 1: do are similar. Tucker's better on the basis, Tucker's a
- 17:17Speaker 1: better defender, So I guess you could make the argument,
- 17:22Speaker 1: but I'm not seeing this Jan Soto type deal. The
- 17:27Speaker 1: Vlad Junior deal does kind of skew the market. I
- 17:29Speaker 1: just don't I don't know what it looks like. I'm
- 17:32Speaker 1: very curious with all those teams bidding, I just I
- 17:36Speaker 1: don't know these astronomical six hundred and seven hundred million
- 17:39Speaker 1: dollar deals. I don't know if it gets there. Maybe
- 17:43Speaker 1: I'm completely misreading the market, and that's very possible, especially
- 17:48Speaker 1: with so many teams bidding.
- 17:50Speaker 3: I feel like there's very little downside for Kyle Tucker
- 17:55Speaker 3: to see if that's out.
- 17:56Speaker 2: There, oh right, like yeah, yeah. I mean.
- 18:01Speaker 3: As a position player, the injury risks are pretty minimal.
- 18:05Speaker 3: As someone who's made good money as a top of
- 18:09Speaker 3: the draft pick through the arbitration system. I think you
- 18:16Speaker 3: just sort of have to let this play out there.
- 18:20Speaker 3: As much as he seems to enjoy Chicago, there's no
- 18:22Speaker 3: history here. I mean, he's been a Cub for a
- 18:26Speaker 3: couple of months, and I think whatever the Cubs are
- 18:29Speaker 3: comfortable offering will still be there in a couple months anyways,
- 18:36Speaker 3: And maybe with that interest you could kind of leverage
- 18:42Speaker 3: that a little more. I think the thing that we're
- 18:45Speaker 3: gonna be curious about at the trade deadline, and I
- 18:49Speaker 3: think Tucker is kind of adjacent to all this because
- 18:52Speaker 3: you want to maximize this year.
- 18:54Speaker 2: It's like.
- 18:56Speaker 3: Sure, I mean the Cubs can obviously, as a business,
- 19:00Speaker 3: can afford whatever the Vlad deal, whatever you whatever it
- 19:05Speaker 3: winds up being as a business, But as a baseball
- 19:09Speaker 3: operations department, what percentage is that Tucker deal going to
- 19:15Speaker 3: take up? Like how far out in the future do
- 19:17Speaker 3: they have to go or are they willing to go?
- 19:21Speaker 3: Like where does the AAV factor in in terms of CBT,
- 19:25Speaker 3: What is the CBT gonna be? What is the landscape
- 19:28Speaker 3: going to look like with the new CBA, And so
- 19:31Speaker 3: that I think is something we're talking about here too,
- 19:34Speaker 3: of like how how much do you sacrifice in terms
- 19:39Speaker 3: of future assets from the farm system, like if Tucker's
- 19:45Speaker 3: going to be taking up that big number, or like
- 19:47Speaker 3: if the payroll is gonna kind of be what it's
- 19:50Speaker 3: been here recently, of like more like top fifteen than
- 19:54Speaker 3: top five. There's there's a lot going on here behind
- 19:59Speaker 3: the scenes that you know, we won't fully know.
- 20:02Speaker 2: But even the.
- 20:03Speaker 3: Cubs are dealing with a lot of unknowns too, and
- 20:06Speaker 3: they're going to have to make their best guesses here
- 20:08Speaker 3: in July.
- 20:09Speaker 1: Yeah, I think the way fans do not want to
- 20:13Speaker 1: hear this and it just does not matter to fans,
- 20:16Speaker 1: and I understand that and I appreciate it. Front offices
- 20:19Speaker 1: have to kind of look at it. Okay, say you
- 20:21Speaker 1: give them an eight year deal. In theory, the first
- 20:24Speaker 1: four years are where you make the money, where the
- 20:26Speaker 1: Cubs are winning the deal. The last four years you
- 20:30Speaker 1: have to outspend that deal. Are the clubs capable of
- 20:33Speaker 1: doing that if they're let's just say it's let's say
- 20:37Speaker 1: it's a ten year deal and it's four hundred million, Okay,
- 20:39Speaker 1: cheap side, I think that's he's probably going to beat that.
- 20:43Speaker 2: So five years let's say.
- 20:45Speaker 1: For forty million, you like that, and then the next
- 20:48Speaker 1: five years at forty million, can you are the Cubs
- 20:51Speaker 1: outspending that? I don't know if that's a bad contract
- 20:56Speaker 1: for them at that point, If that, if the five
- 20:58Speaker 1: years two hundred million remaining is a bad deal, can
- 21:01Speaker 1: the Cubs? Will the Cubs outspend that? Maybe they will.
- 21:05Speaker 1: I don't know what the CBA is going to look like,
- 21:07Speaker 1: and I don't know what their spending is going to
- 21:09Speaker 1: look like, and I think the front office doesn't really
- 21:11Speaker 1: know what their spending is going to look like. Uh
- 21:14Speaker 1: So that that makes that's what makes these types of
- 21:17Speaker 1: decisions difficult. You're not the Mets, You're not the Dodgers.
- 21:20Speaker 1: You're not even the Giants or the Red Sox or
- 21:23Speaker 1: the Yankees. I mean the Red Sox. I don't know
- 21:26Speaker 1: what they are, but they at least they signed someone
- 21:29Speaker 1: like Devers before trading them. They gave they handed out
- 21:34Speaker 1: that huge contract. I don't know. The Cubs have never
- 21:37Speaker 1: done anything above two hundred million. They've never hit two
- 21:40Speaker 1: hundred million, So we don't know what they're what they're
- 21:43Speaker 1: willing to do, and what they're capable of doing, and
- 21:45Speaker 1: how it looks in the long term, and I think
- 21:49Speaker 1: just in general, you can't live in a world where
- 21:52Speaker 1: you fear that suddenly this deal that you sign is
- 21:56Speaker 1: going to handcuff you when it's on the back end
- 21:59Speaker 1: of it. Just don't You don't want to live in
- 22:01Speaker 1: that world as a big market team that's not acting
- 22:04Speaker 1: like a big money market team. So well, it's going
- 22:08Speaker 1: to be interesting. I you know this, this will be
- 22:11Speaker 1: a topic four months. It already has been. I don't
- 22:14Speaker 1: know how it ends it, but I think Tucker is
- 22:18Speaker 1: making it more interesting just by doing little things like
- 22:20Speaker 1: taking pictures of himself in loving Chicago, out with the
- 22:24Speaker 1: guys and on the lake. I mean that's going to
- 22:27Speaker 1: rile up certain parts of the fan base. You know,
- 22:29Speaker 1: he's he's got charities that he's starting here, like things
- 22:32Speaker 1: like that, Like people are like, oh, is he saiding?
- 22:34Speaker 1: Is he putting in roots? And it's like, you know,
- 22:38Speaker 1: I wouldn't go that far, but I get it. I
- 22:41Speaker 1: get it how fans are reacting and how fans want
- 22:43Speaker 1: to envision the best case scenario with Kyle Tucker. You
- 22:48Speaker 1: cannot understate his impact on this team. I think that's
- 22:51Speaker 1: that's clear.
- 22:52Speaker 2: Patrick.
- 22:53Speaker 1: Let's talk about someone else that's had a huge impact
- 22:55Speaker 1: on this team.
- 22:56Speaker 4: When we come back, Kratz, I am actually in the
- 22:59Speaker 4: market for a new car. Yes, wow, your car up
- 23:04Speaker 4: north so I can drive very far to todd father
- 23:07Speaker 4: studio and to my house and to your house. You
- 23:12Speaker 4: don't want to be confused, Yes, because I'm parency this
- 23:16Speaker 4: is big on our show and just.
- 23:18Speaker 1: Fat to The confidence part is what I stick with
- 23:20Speaker 1: because it's like, did I I.
- 23:23Speaker 2: Gotta check another site? I gotta check this site or
- 23:25Speaker 2: that site. It's all in one place. I know I
- 23:27Speaker 2: got the best deal for what I'm getting. Take the
- 23:31Speaker 2: guesswork out.

- 23:56Speaker 4: us dot com.
- 23:59Speaker 1: Patrick Matthew Boyd, it's been a stud He has been
- 24:02Speaker 1: awesome for the Cubs, and I, you know, I thought
- 24:07Speaker 1: about it and talked about it with other writers after
- 24:10Speaker 1: his start in where we're with Saint Louis and and
- 24:14Speaker 1: it's just, you know, he's reinforcing it. Is he an
- 24:17Speaker 1: all star? He's believe I just looked it up. It
- 24:20Speaker 1: was twelfth in er and I'm talking about big leagues.
- 24:24Speaker 1: Twelfth in the Big Leagues in era twentieth.
- 24:28Speaker 2: And innings pitched.
- 24:29Speaker 1: He's up there in war by Fangrabs just been just
- 24:35Speaker 1: really impressive and kind of the type of pitcher that
- 24:41Speaker 1: they desperately needed with Justin Steele out for the year
- 24:44Speaker 1: and showed him monogamissing nearly two months and really, if
- 24:50Speaker 1: he weren't having this type of season, we'd be freaking out.
- 24:54Speaker 1: As far as they're desperate need for starting pitching. They
- 24:58Speaker 1: need starting pitching. They need to go get a starting picture.
- 25:00Speaker 1: But with him, it showed him anaga back. They have
- 25:03Speaker 1: two really good pictures that you can throw out to
- 25:07Speaker 1: start a series in the postseason and not feel like
- 25:11Speaker 1: you have no chance that you you know, you have
- 25:13Speaker 1: a decent chance to have the best picture on the
- 25:15Speaker 1: mound with those guys going.
- 25:18Speaker 3: I mean, he's on pace for close to two hundred
- 25:21Speaker 3: innings which is wild considering around this time last year.
- 25:25Speaker 3: You know, he he may have signed with Cleveland at
- 25:29Speaker 3: that point, but was come back from Tommy John surgery
- 25:31Speaker 3: and you know, had been doing the showcases, trying to
- 25:34Speaker 3: gain some traction on a major league deal, and just
- 25:38Speaker 3: a delightful human being. Like you know, it's his start
- 25:43Speaker 3: day yesterday and he's We're standing next to each other
- 25:47Speaker 3: side and I and he says like, hey, guys, how's
- 25:49Speaker 3: it going, And like that's you know, for uh, people
- 25:53Speaker 3: who aren't kind of you know, behind the scenes like that,
- 25:57Speaker 3: like starting picture David Media does not talk to the
- 26:00Speaker 3: picture on the day he starts. Such just kind of
- 26:02Speaker 3: an unspoken understood thing throughout baseball. But there are a
- 26:07Speaker 3: couple of exceptions, you know, guys who just are on
- 26:11Speaker 3: their own sort of frequency. And Matthew Boyd, he'd already
- 26:16Speaker 3: said hi to me earlier in the day too. He's like,
- 26:18Speaker 3: what's up, Patrick, And I'm like, hey, Like it's put
- 26:20Speaker 3: you in this spot. You're like, I respond to you
- 26:22Speaker 3: because you said high first. But just a really nice
- 26:28Speaker 3: human being, but very competitive on the mound, you know
- 26:34Speaker 3: him or showeda kind of your game one playoff starter
- 26:37Speaker 3: unless you know, Jed has a surprise before the July
- 26:41Speaker 3: thirty first deadline, but the real consistent HA said, maybe
- 26:47Speaker 3: one sort of so so outing, but has really delivered
- 26:51Speaker 3: length and quality over and over and over, and yeah,
- 26:56Speaker 3: I haven't. You know, the All Star pitching selection process
- 27:00Speaker 3: always seems a little wonky, like you know, injuries or
- 27:02Speaker 3: guys don't want to pitch, and like guys keep getting added.
- 27:06Speaker 3: I'd have to think he's very firmly in that conversation
- 27:10Speaker 3: and would probably have a pretty good chance as basically
- 27:14Speaker 3: the best pitcher on one of the National League's best teams.
- 27:18Speaker 1: Yeah, and the more I when we first had this
- 27:20Speaker 1: discussion among the media people, I was like, no, is
- 27:24Speaker 1: he that good? Like, I mean, he's been awesome for
- 27:26Speaker 1: the Cubs, but like league wide and I and I
- 27:29Speaker 1: just double checked, and I was like, I know, is
- 27:31Speaker 1: he ra is good? Maybe he doesn't have the innings
- 27:33Speaker 1: And I was like, no, he's got everything. He's he's
- 27:35Speaker 1: up there with everything. So he certainly ad minimum deserves.
- 27:39Speaker 1: Like if he's not on that first list that they give,
- 27:43Speaker 1: you know, the with the injuries, he'll he'll he he
- 27:46Speaker 1: has to make it. I'd be surprised if he's not there,
- 27:50Speaker 1: it'd be quite an honor for him. Like he deserving guy,
- 27:54Speaker 1: like you said, puts you in that uncomfortable position as
- 27:57Speaker 1: media saying hi to Like I almost forgot that to
- 28:00Speaker 1: his start day, it's like, oh, hey, how's it going?
- 28:01Speaker 1: And then I was like, oh, I gotta wait, he's starting.
- 28:05Speaker 2: I don't want to chat him up. But he's so friendly.
- 28:07Speaker 1: Almost he's disarming that it's just like, oh, I could
- 28:11Speaker 1: talk to this guy.
- 28:12Speaker 3: His game face is just like smiling and saying, you know,
- 28:16Speaker 3: good morning to everyone, or good afternoon, how's it going?
- 28:18Speaker 3: Stuff like that, and obviously starting pictures talk to teammates
- 28:21Speaker 3: and stuff. But even some guys just like have the
- 28:23Speaker 3: headphones in and just don't want to be bothered on
- 28:26Speaker 3: their start day. And he is very much the opposite
- 28:28Speaker 3: of that.
- 28:28Speaker 1: Yeah yeah, like Tyne, very friendly guy, but start day
- 28:32Speaker 1: he's got the headphones on and he's focused and preparing.
- 28:35Speaker 2: Uh yeah.
- 28:38Speaker 1: I think when you say, I think what Cubs fans
- 28:42Speaker 1: can get or like kind of get anticipate, like really
- 28:45Speaker 1: anticipate over this next month if Jed can pull off
- 28:50Speaker 1: a trade to get someone as good or better than
- 28:53Speaker 1: showed in Matthew Boyd.
- 28:54Speaker 2: That should excite man.
- 28:55Speaker 1: That's the type of thing that just completely changes the
- 28:58Speaker 1: complexion of the team because when you have a guy
- 29:02Speaker 1: step up like Matthew Boyd has and go from Okay,
- 29:05Speaker 1: this is this signing any good? Is this going to
- 29:08Speaker 1: like be valuable for them? Can this guy stay healthy?
- 29:11Speaker 1: And we still you know, still have a season left,
- 29:14Speaker 1: don't want to assume.
- 29:15Speaker 2: Anything, but it looks good.
- 29:16Speaker 1: There's there's nothing that's even like, there's nothing that's even
- 29:20Speaker 1: like worried you about him yet health wise. Just then
- 29:27Speaker 1: when when you have a guy step up like Boyd
- 29:29Speaker 1: and you have Showda coming back, and the way he
- 29:31Speaker 1: looked in that first start, it's almost like, Okay, he's
- 29:34Speaker 1: just getting started. That's how it felt to me watching it.
- 29:37Speaker 1: I'm like, I don't think he's at his best yet.
- 29:39Speaker 1: Now he's it was a non arm injury. Those two
- 29:42Speaker 1: things kind of line up really well. And you add
- 29:45Speaker 1: one more guy, even if it's right close to that level,
- 29:49Speaker 1: that would just be such a such a big addition
- 29:53Speaker 1: for this team.
- 29:54Speaker 2: The type of thing that pushes you.
- 29:57Speaker 1: You were we were talking about World Series odds before,
- 29:59Speaker 1: Like that's type of thing that changes the way you
- 30:02Speaker 1: look at the team and say, okay, now that they
- 30:05Speaker 1: have everything.
- 30:06Speaker 6: Going for them, and you know that they Matthew Boy's
- 30:11Speaker 6: just been such a such a huge piece and such
- 30:14Speaker 6: a revelation this season that it allows you to dream
- 30:18Speaker 6: big for October when you have these types.
- 30:21Speaker 2: And there's.
- 30:23Speaker 1: When council who who doesn't love reminiscing and going big
- 30:28Speaker 1: picture and stuff like that. When he did talk about
- 30:30Speaker 1: the first half, that's kind of what he's like. When
- 30:33Speaker 1: you have seasons like this, you need surprises and it's
- 30:37Speaker 1: remarkable how many you can list off PCA.
- 30:40Speaker 2: You know, we knew what he could be, but.
- 30:43Speaker 1: This level is something special. Matthew Boyd has been just brilliant.
- 30:49Speaker 1: Michael Bush has taken his offense to another level. There's
- 30:54Speaker 1: the bullpen arms that have gone over, but Brad Keller,
- 30:57Speaker 1: Drew palm Rance, Daniel Palencia is continuing to really impress me.
- 31:02Speaker 1: What he did in Saint Louis to end that the
- 31:04Speaker 1: final game, and then last night he was he was
- 31:07Speaker 1: dominant Patrick like dotting up one oh two and like
- 31:11Speaker 1: just like they.
- 31:12Speaker 2: Had no chance against him.
- 31:14Speaker 1: That's the type of stuff that that's exciting, and I
- 31:17Speaker 1: don't know what what they'll do to upgrade the bullpen.
- 31:20Speaker 1: But if he's not your closer, then you got like
- 31:24Speaker 1: a really dominant setup man too. But I think he's
- 31:27Speaker 1: just fine closing right now. You love to have experience
- 31:31Speaker 1: in the bullpen, but that wo, like, that's that's the
- 31:33Speaker 1: type of stuff that's kind of scary how good, how
- 31:36Speaker 1: good he looks, and it's and it's also why you
- 31:38Speaker 1: bet on stuff. So there's been a lot of good
- 31:42Speaker 1: surprises for this team. Uh and and you need that,
- 31:45Speaker 1: like to have a season like this and to to
- 31:47Speaker 1: kind of you need it to continue.
- 31:50Speaker 3: Yeah, no doubt. I mean, I think he's strengthened the
- 31:52Speaker 3: strength at the trade deadline. And if you know, Craig
- 31:56Speaker 3: Council has his reputation for being kind of a bullpen
- 31:59Speaker 3: whisper and expert tactician, just give him more. I mean,
- 32:04Speaker 3: imagine if Matthew Boyd is starting like game three of
- 32:07Speaker 3: the playoffs, not game one, assuming show to is at
- 32:14Speaker 3: full strength and that you add someone else, and yeah,
- 32:19Speaker 3: I think we'll get into this more, you know, in
- 32:22Speaker 3: future shows. But certainly adding a right handed hitter, just
- 32:28Speaker 3: giving yourself more options, just kind of bumping everyone down
- 32:33Speaker 3: on the depth chart makes a ton of sense, and
- 32:37Speaker 3: as long as the Cubs sort of finished this first
- 32:41Speaker 3: half strong, I mean the pre All Star break first
- 32:44Speaker 3: half on a good note. You'd have the Draft, which
- 32:49Speaker 3: is a time when front offices sort of go quiet
- 32:52Speaker 3: in terms of trade talks because they're so absorbed in
- 32:55Speaker 3: the draft process. You'd be looking at coming out of
- 32:59Speaker 3: that in mid to late July in a real position
- 33:03Speaker 3: of strength where the Cubs have to just kind of
- 33:05Speaker 3: go out and get it, like all the momentum is
- 33:10Speaker 3: heading in that direction.
- 33:12Speaker 1: Yeah, it'll be This is gonna be a fun month,
- 33:15Speaker 1: I think for Cubs fans.
- 33:17Speaker 2: They weathered a tough June.
- 33:19Speaker 1: We'll see, you know how they continue to do against Cleveland. Big,
- 33:24Speaker 1: big weekend, fun series. Saint Louis coming to town, first
- 33:29Speaker 1: time there at regularly this season, and we got a
- 33:32Speaker 1: show to start this week too at regular first time
- 33:34Speaker 1: since he got hurt. So big, big rest of the week,
- 33:39Speaker 1: fun rest of the week, holiday weekend. It should be
- 33:42Speaker 1: fun at Wrigley. I think it'll be a blast to
- 33:44Speaker 1: cover this weekend.
- 33:47Speaker 2: Thanks so much for listening to everyone.
- 33:48Speaker 1: We'll be back with a few more shows this week
- 33:51Speaker 1: and more next Thanks for listening to everyone.
- 33:53Speaker 2: This is Northside Territory.
- 33:54Speaker 1: Make sure to rate, review, subscribe, subscribe to the YouTube channel,
- 33:57Speaker 1: and subscribe to The Athletic, where Patrick and I are
- 34:00Speaker 1: on top of all things cubs.
- 34:01Speaker 2: Thanks everyone, take care,
