- 0:07Speaker 1: The Season with Peter Scheger is a production of the
- 0:09Speaker 1: NFL in partnership with iHeartRadio. What's Up, Everybody? Welcome to
- 0:25Speaker 1: another edition of the Season with Peter Schrager. Fresh off
- 0:29Speaker 1: another entertaining and educational week of NFL football, I come
- 0:35Speaker 1: out of it and I just can't stop thinking about
- 0:37Speaker 1: just how dominant the.
- 0:38Speaker 2: Forty nine ers are.
- 0:40Speaker 1: San Francisco was one of those teams last year that
- 0:43Speaker 1: was very good. They went to the NFC Championship Game.
- 0:46Speaker 1: They lost to the Eagles after their quarterback got injured,
- 0:48Speaker 1: and they entered the off season. They made one big move.
- 0:50Speaker 1: They got Javon Hargrave. But the huge decision was to
- 0:54Speaker 1: go all in on Brock Party. They traded Trey Lance
- 0:57Speaker 1: about twenty cents on the dollar, and they had Sam
- 1:00Speaker 1: Darnold and it wasn't even a competition. It was going
- 1:02Speaker 1: to be perty. I was hesitant. I wasn't sure, not
- 1:06Speaker 1: so much that Party didn't prove it last year. But
- 1:09Speaker 1: I was hesitant because he had a major elbow injury
- 1:11Speaker 1: and they were already putting all their eggs in his basket.
- 1:14Speaker 1: They're like, can be fine for week one? All right,
- 1:16Speaker 1: Let's see August September predictions coming along, and I've got
- 1:21Speaker 1: to make a prediction for Good Morning Football. I've got
- 1:23Speaker 1: to pick an MVP, and I've got to pick my
- 1:26Speaker 1: Super Bowl champions.
- 1:28Speaker 2: My MVP.
- 1:29Speaker 1: I went with Christian McCaffrey, and there has not been
- 1:32Speaker 1: a running back to win MVP since twenty twelve. That
- 1:35Speaker 1: was Adrian Peterson, who came eight yards short of breaking
- 1:39Speaker 1: the all time single season rushing record. Did that off
- 1:41Speaker 1: a major ACL injury. I thought McCaffrey first year in
- 1:45Speaker 1: an offense, that they were gonna have to rely on
- 1:47Speaker 1: him even more. With some of the best skill position
- 1:49Speaker 1: players in the world, it's going to be McCaffrey because Party,
- 1:52Speaker 1: well as good as Perty is, Perty just.
- 1:55Speaker 2: Can't be the guy. There's just no way he can't
- 1:57Speaker 2: be the guy.
- 1:57Speaker 1: He's not going to be the one that we come
- 1:58Speaker 1: across each week and we say afterwards, yeah, it's guys, Aaron,
- 2:04Speaker 1: I think brock Perty might be the league this year. WHOA,
- 2:09Speaker 1: I'm serious. He doesn't make a mistake. He operates an
- 2:13Speaker 1: offense that, yes, is loaded with stars, but he operates
- 2:17Speaker 1: it with such precision it is almost like he's a robot.
- 2:20Speaker 1: And Kyle Shanahan is pushing all the buttons from the sidelines.
- 2:24Speaker 1: The one mistake he made he threw behind Ayuk and
- 2:28Speaker 1: it was crazy. Kyle Shanahan like started his press conference
- 2:30Speaker 1: talking about the one mistake he made was he missed
- 2:32Speaker 1: ba on the pass that he.
- 2:33Speaker 2: Had in the end zone.
- 2:34Speaker 1: Every other one of these he connects. Think about the
- 2:38Speaker 1: other part of it too.
- 2:39Speaker 2: You got to be a leader. You're a second year guy.
- 2:41Speaker 1: You were obviously mister irrelevant last year, but you've got
- 2:44Speaker 1: some big personalities on that offense. You've got Deebo Samuel,
- 2:49Speaker 1: You've got George Kittle, You've got McCaffrey, You've got Ayyuk,
- 2:53Speaker 1: You've got Trent Williams at tackle. You have Kyle Shanahan,
- 2:57Speaker 1: one of the most demanding coaches in the league, and to.
- 3:01Speaker 2: A man, they love him.
- 3:02Speaker 1: So it's not just the skill, it's not just the
- 3:05Speaker 1: operation and execution it is it is what he brings
- 3:10Speaker 1: to the table as a guy too. Like he doesn't
- 3:13Speaker 1: do the me first thing, which I think is appreciated.
- 3:15Speaker 1: He knows his place in the locker room and he
- 3:18Speaker 1: feeds them all the rock. If you have any of
- 3:19Speaker 1: those guys on fantasy, you're not complaining you're happy there's
- 3:22Speaker 1: an equal share of the ball.
- 3:24Speaker 2: And I think he's the MVP right now.
- 3:25Speaker 1: I know everyone wants to talk about Tua and Mahomes
- 3:28Speaker 1: and Josh Allen and even Mike picked McCaffrey, but brock
- 3:31Speaker 1: Party is the most valuable player in the league because
- 3:34Speaker 1: of what he's doing at the switch and that's him
- 3:37Speaker 1: at the quarterback position, getting everyone involved and operating it
- 3:40Speaker 1: to one hundred percent efficiency rate, which leads to an
- 3:44Speaker 1: interesting exercise we did on Good Morning Football on Tuesday morning,
- 3:48Speaker 1: and Aaron Van Kaufman, my lovely producer, I'm going to
- 3:51Speaker 1: put you on the to the test. Also our nine
- 3:55Speaker 1: a m segment, we had to rank the top five
- 3:57Speaker 1: teams in the league, and I tried to do something
- 4:00Speaker 1: sometimes we call it like break the segment so it's
- 4:03Speaker 1: not just chalk. And I said, okay, well, the Chiefs
- 4:05Speaker 1: are won a team in the league because they're defending
- 4:08Speaker 1: Super Bowl champions and they still have really only lost one.
- 4:13Speaker 2: Game, and that game wasn't with Kelsey, wasn't with Chris Jones.
- 4:15Speaker 1: And if and hypothetically were to say, for all the marbles,
- 4:18Speaker 1: it's Chiefs forty nine ers tomorrow, who you pick, and
- 4:20Speaker 1: I still can't pick against my homes and Andy Reid
- 4:22Speaker 1: and Travis Kelce, like I still can't go against Chris
- 4:25Speaker 1: Jones and Steve Spagnolo what they've done. So I kind
- 4:28Speaker 1: of did some word logic and some I was making TV.
- 4:31Speaker 1: Then forty nine ers are the better team right now.
- 4:33Speaker 1: Forty nine ers Receemiro only everybody. But here was the task,
- 4:36Speaker 1: and Aaron, I almost wish I gave you some time
- 4:38Speaker 1: to prepare. The task was list the top five forty
- 4:42Speaker 1: nine ers on the roster right now.
- 4:44Speaker 3: The top five forty nine ers.
- 4:47Speaker 4: I mean, I feel like we could do an offensive
- 4:50Speaker 4: and defensive list now, that mean.
- 4:52Speaker 1: The top five forty nine ers. So I want you
- 4:55Speaker 1: to take some time right now, Aaron and everyone at
- 4:57Speaker 1: home listening to think about all the forty nine ers
- 5:00Speaker 1: players right now this season.
- 5:02Speaker 2: Rank them five through one.
- 5:05Speaker 1: Take a second, all right, Aaron revealing five through one,
- 5:08Speaker 1: like we're doing Letterman's late late show stuff, and it's
- 5:12Speaker 1: the top from the homes, from those the home box
- 5:15Speaker 1: office in Sioux City, Iowa. Is that what it will
- 5:17Speaker 1: say is that why Iowa? It might have been do
- 5:22Speaker 1: me a top five forty nine Ers players this season got.
- 5:26Speaker 3: This season so far through five games.
- 5:28Speaker 4: Number five, anchoring the left side of the line, I'm
- 5:30Speaker 4: going to go with Trent Williams. I think the we've
- 5:34Speaker 4: talked about positionless players and how important it is that
- 5:37Speaker 4: there are so many different weapons on offense.
- 5:39Speaker 3: You also have.
- 5:40Speaker 4: To make sure that there's enough time and that that
- 5:42Speaker 4: party can react and get the ball to any number
- 5:48Speaker 4: of players who I have to hire. Number four, I'm
- 5:52Speaker 4: gonna go with Deebo. And this one, I don't want
- 5:55Speaker 4: to give away too much of the list, but there
- 5:57Speaker 4: are two players here, Deebo and Ayuk, and I just
- 6:00Speaker 4: couldn't figure out who to pick. I think Deebo seem
- 6:04Speaker 4: Deebo like has these monster games when I is not there,
- 6:07Speaker 4: but when they're both there, I feel like, I mean,
- 6:10Speaker 4: I don't know, I'm maybe a little biased where this
- 6:13Speaker 4: this weekend. You know, they make the play to Ayuk
- 6:16Speaker 4: and penalty in negates it and then they get it
- 6:19Speaker 4: to Debo and it's okay, cool, Like we didn't get one,
- 6:22Speaker 4: we got the other. I didn't think I would do this,
- 6:26Speaker 4: But number three, I have Purdy And maybe this is
- 6:29Speaker 4: again like you just waxed poetic on Purdy.
- 6:32Speaker 3: So I'm influenced, but he is.
- 6:34Speaker 4: He's doing throws that Jimmy didn't do, and he he
- 6:38Speaker 4: is he has some processing he's doing at the line,
- 6:42Speaker 4: and you're telling he's not just saying Okay, here's read
- 6:45Speaker 4: one go and he.
- 6:49Speaker 3: Yeah. I don't know. I don't know if I'm going to.
- 6:51Speaker 4: Go so far as to say he's the MVP, but
- 6:54Speaker 4: he's doing so much better. And I will admit, like
- 6:57Speaker 4: I remember early on in the year, I think we
- 7:00Speaker 4: were doing our guesses for Super Bowl and playoffs and
- 7:04Speaker 4: you had guests forty nine ers and I almost made
- 7:06Speaker 4: a joke like, oh and Sam Darnold.
- 7:08Speaker 2: Yeah, of course, no, he will.
- 7:10Speaker 3: Not be starting for them too.
- 7:12Speaker 4: I'm gonna have Bosa because I can't just have offensive
- 7:15Speaker 4: players because the defense is destructive, and.
- 7:19Speaker 3: Like, you can't.
- 7:21Speaker 4: I mean, we watched the Cowboys, who have amazing players
- 7:25Speaker 4: and it didn't matter. And number one, I have CMC
- 7:29Speaker 4: because I feel like he truly was like he's had
- 7:32Speaker 4: fourteen straight games with touchdowns. I mean he is incredible
- 7:36Speaker 4: and has I mean everyone has said this. He is
- 7:39Speaker 4: the perfect player in that match. It's a you know,
- 7:43Speaker 4: like hand in glove fit and yeah, CMC is my number.
- 7:47Speaker 1: One awesome list. There's no wrong answers. I have a
- 7:50Speaker 1: completely different list.
- 7:51Speaker 3: Oh my god. Okay.
- 7:53Speaker 1: First of all, before we even begin this, neither one
- 7:57Speaker 1: of our lists will have George Kittle on it. George
- 7:59Speaker 1: Kittle might be the best blocking tight end in football
- 8:01Speaker 1: and is the tone setter. Neither one of our lists
- 8:04Speaker 1: will have Eric Armstead in this He's one of the
- 8:06Speaker 1: best defensive ends in the entire sport and is the
- 8:09Speaker 1: run stopper on that defense. Neither one of our lists
- 8:11Speaker 1: will have Teleanoah Hufonga on this list, who is a
- 8:14Speaker 1: first team All Pro safety last year. Neither one of
- 8:17Speaker 1: our lists will have Kyle Yuscheck on this list, who
- 8:20Speaker 1: is the best all around fullback in the NFL and
- 8:23Speaker 1: a true Swiss army knife.
- 8:25Speaker 2: Neither one of our lists will have Dre Greenlaw.
- 8:27Speaker 1: On this list, maybe one of the best inside linebackers
- 8:30Speaker 1: in the entire sport and a guy that has jumped
- 8:32Speaker 1: his game tenfold over the last two seasons.
- 8:36Speaker 2: My list is as follow us.
- 8:39Speaker 1: Number five, my pick for MVP less than five minutes ago,
- 8:43Speaker 1: is number five on the best forty nine ers list.
- 8:47Speaker 2: Does that make sense? I don't know. I don't give it.
- 8:50Speaker 2: I'm saying rock Perty is number five on my list.
- 8:52Speaker 1: I look around and I just think he is the
- 8:54Speaker 1: ultimate operator of this offense.
- 8:56Speaker 2: He is an.
- 8:57Speaker 1: Upgrade from Trey Lance. He is an upgrade from Jimmy Garoppolo.
- 9:01Speaker 1: He is an upgrade from whatever they thought Kirk Cousins
- 9:03Speaker 1: might be when he's been rumored there. He's an upgrade
- 9:05Speaker 1: from the Mac Jones draft rumors. He's an upgrade from
- 9:07Speaker 1: Brian Hoyer. He's an upgrade from every single quarterback that
- 9:10Speaker 1: has been in that system in San Francisco.
- 9:12Speaker 2: He's better than Nick Mallin's better.
- 9:13Speaker 1: All this is how a Kyle Shanahan offense can run
- 9:17Speaker 1: when you have a robot running it. And I say
- 9:19Speaker 1: that jokingly, but like George Kittle called him a robot,
- 9:23Speaker 1: and anyone you talk to is like, it's imagine you
- 9:25Speaker 1: have someone that shares the same brain with Kyle Shanahan
- 9:28Speaker 1: and he's only getting better week two week, But he's
- 9:31Speaker 1: not in the top four for best players on that team.
- 9:37Speaker 1: Number four, I think is a guy who might win
- 9:38Speaker 1: Defensive Player of the Year and had a showcase game
- 9:41Speaker 1: on Sunday night.
- 9:42Speaker 2: Fred Warner wasn't on your list.
- 9:43Speaker 3: Yeah, it was probably six.
- 9:45Speaker 1: Yeah, Fred Warner is unbelievable. You can go off on
- 9:49Speaker 1: you know, Zire Franklin in Indianapolis or Quincy Williams and
- 9:53Speaker 1: the Jets.
- 9:54Speaker 2: There's all these.
- 9:54Speaker 1: Different like there's no better linebacker right now than Fred Warner.
- 9:57Speaker 1: The guy is unbelievable. He's all over the field. He
- 10:00Speaker 1: calls the defense. He's on the run plays, he's on
- 10:02Speaker 1: the passing plays. He intercepts passes, off tips. Go back
- 10:05Speaker 1: and watch that interception he had off the deflection. He's
- 10:08Speaker 1: on a totally different side of the ball. The play
- 10:11Speaker 1: is called hike. The past comes to the other hash
- 10:13Speaker 1: mark the guy's hit. He immediately leaves his man which
- 10:17Speaker 1: he's covering, and then has enough wherewithal to scoop it up.
- 10:20Speaker 1: And he plays with a cool ferocity and is like
- 10:22Speaker 1: the play caller. Fred Warner is my number four, number three.
- 10:26Speaker 1: I went Bosa, didn't have a training camp, was holding out,
- 10:30Speaker 1: and you could see he's getting better and better every week.
- 10:33Speaker 1: He's unstoppable on the defensive line. And it's just unfair
- 10:36Speaker 1: that they've all these players number two.
- 10:39Speaker 2: And number one.
- 10:40Speaker 1: I'll break it down as this. I had McCaffrey as
- 10:42Speaker 1: the MVP. Before this season, I had McCaffrey, you know,
- 10:46Speaker 1: breaking all these records.
- 10:47Speaker 2: And he's doing it. He's doing everything, and yet he's
- 10:50Speaker 2: not the second best forty nine er this this season.
- 10:52Speaker 1: He's not the best forty nine of this season. He's
- 10:54Speaker 1: number two. Trent Williams just erases people, Trent Williams might
- 10:59Speaker 1: be the best player in football. And here is what
- 11:02Speaker 1: is wild about it. Trent Williams was in the same
- 11:05Speaker 1: draft class as Oklahoma teammates Sam Bradford and Gerald McCoy.
- 11:11Speaker 1: Sam Bradford's going to be eligible for like Hall of
- 11:12Speaker 1: Fame voting next year, and Gerald McCoy is on NFL
- 11:15Speaker 1: Network and has been out of the league for a
- 11:17Speaker 1: few seasons now. And Trent Williams getting better. Trent Williams
- 11:21Speaker 1: was traded for essentially nothing from Washington. They have draft
- 11:24Speaker 1: picks that if I'm sure, someone could hit me up
- 11:27Speaker 1: on Twitter and be like, I actually got this guy
- 11:29Speaker 1: in the sixth round. Trent Williams might be the best
- 11:31Speaker 1: player in football this season. Micah Parsons was invisible on Sunday.
- 11:36Speaker 1: I thought Trent Williams blocked his ass off in the
- 11:38Speaker 1: week beforehand when they played the Rams and those guys
- 11:41Speaker 1: had no pressure on brock perty or two weeks ago
- 11:44Speaker 1: when they played the Rams, whatever it was week two.
- 11:46Speaker 1: Trent Williams is sensational. The Giants could not get any pressure.
- 11:51Speaker 1: And he also said to Tony's the scariest guy in the league.
- 11:54Speaker 2: Also, so you and I had very different one through fives.
- 11:57Speaker 1: We left off five guys like I didn't have Deebo
- 11:59Speaker 1: Samuel on my top five, and I think he might
- 12:01Speaker 1: be the most fun player in the league to watch.
- 12:03Speaker 1: Neither of us had ay Neither of us had Ayuk,
- 12:05Speaker 1: who could be an all wide receiver this year, and
- 12:07Speaker 1: it's putting up those types of numbers. So all this
- 12:09Speaker 1: to say, yeah, the Niners are pretty good and my
- 12:14Speaker 1: defensive rock party, because the argument could go, well, how's
- 12:16Speaker 1: your MVP if he's your fifth guy on the list,
- 12:18Speaker 1: and how is he your MVP if he's got all
- 12:20Speaker 1: those weapons?
- 12:21Speaker 2: Guys.
- 12:21Speaker 1: Tom Brady had a bunch of great weapons when he
- 12:23Speaker 1: broke all those records in two thousand and seven, and
- 12:26Speaker 1: Peyton Manning had awesome receivers in Indie and in Denver
- 12:29Speaker 1: and awesome running backs like it's not a shame and
- 12:32Speaker 1: it shouldn't be held against somebody. If you've got great
- 12:34Speaker 1: talent around you, who is the player that maximizes the most,
- 12:37Speaker 1: who's the most valuable piece to that offense.
- 12:39Speaker 2: Who is the one that gets the best out of
- 12:41Speaker 2: those guys?
- 12:42Speaker 1: And it's rock party. In closing on this monologue, the
- 12:45Speaker 1: Niners have beaten opponents by an average of twenty points
- 12:52Speaker 1: a game. That is insane. They are five and zero
- 12:55Speaker 1: and I don't think this locomotive is stopping anytime soon.
- 12:59Speaker 1: Circle this date, Aaron, December third. December third, the Eagles
- 13:05Speaker 1: play the forty nine Ers in an afternoon game on Fox.
- 13:08Speaker 1: And I don't know. I don't like to fast forward
- 13:11Speaker 1: my life. I don't like to not appreciate every single week.
- 13:14Speaker 1: But I can't imagine a more anticipated game right now
- 13:16Speaker 1: than Eagles Niners December third. Let's get there, all right.
- 13:21Speaker 1: I always have a story from my weekend prior. I'm
- 13:24Speaker 1: living a pretty fun twenty twenty three NFL season. And
- 13:27Speaker 1: as I said last week on the podcast, it's the
- 13:29Speaker 1: season with Peter Schreeger, but in a lot of ways,
- 13:31Speaker 1: it could also be the season of Peter Schreeger. And
- 13:33Speaker 1: if you're nauseated by me, and my self stories and
- 13:36Speaker 1: let me tell you my journal I understand, fast forward
- 13:39Speaker 1: to the interview. But I had a pretty cool Saturday
- 13:42Speaker 1: night as I seem to find myself having of late
- 13:44Speaker 1: as I work with Fox on the weekends and get
- 13:46Speaker 1: to fly out to LA and be with a lot
- 13:49Speaker 1: of the star studded talent who are on the morning
- 13:51Speaker 1: shows on Fox on Sundays. And this week's Peter Schrager's
- 13:55Speaker 1: story is about one Rob Gronkowski fly out to LA.
- 13:59Speaker 1: I have a lunch with my producer, Bill Richards, who
- 14:02Speaker 1: is the I guess you'd say, the maestro of Fox
- 14:06Speaker 1: NFL Kickoff but also Fox NFL Sunday. And then I
- 14:09Speaker 1: got a text us I'm wrapping up with Bill and
- 14:11Speaker 1: it's Gronk, and Gronk says, what are you up to tonight?
- 14:15Speaker 2: And I immediately look at.
- 14:17Speaker 1: My phone and I'm like, it's four o'clock and Arizona
- 14:22Speaker 1: is playing USC in Los Angeles, and I'm like, Oh,
- 14:26Speaker 1: Gronk's gonna invite me to come to the coliseum to
- 14:29Speaker 1: go watch Arizona USC and I'm gonna be a guest
- 14:32Speaker 1: of Gronk. And I had already had Jed Fish on
- 14:34Speaker 1: the podcast, and I want to see Caleb Williams, but
- 14:36Speaker 1: the game is late.
- 14:37Speaker 2: It starts at seven point thirty.
- 14:39Speaker 1: I gotta break it to Gronk that I'm not gonna
- 14:41Speaker 1: be able to go to the game because I got
- 14:43Speaker 1: to be up super early and I've got to do
- 14:45Speaker 1: the news and notes and gosh, if Saquan's not playing,
- 14:48Speaker 1: I need to be the one to.
- 14:48Speaker 2: Report it first, which I was.
- 14:50Speaker 1: I gotta do all that stuff and I gotta be
- 14:52Speaker 1: up pro So I'm gonna have to tell Gronk, no,
- 14:53Speaker 1: I can't hang out.
- 14:54Speaker 2: This is gonna suck right back.
- 14:57Speaker 1: Gonna take it easy tonight, probably get dinner and watch
- 15:00Speaker 1: some college football and some baseball in the room, to
- 15:03Speaker 1: which Gronk writes.
- 15:04Speaker 2: Back, where are you going to dinner?
- 15:07Speaker 1: I right back to him, Oh, you're not going to
- 15:10Speaker 1: Arizona USC, to which Gronk, who is going in their
- 15:13Speaker 1: college football Hall of Fame and it's the greatest Arizona
- 15:16Speaker 1: player to ever you know play in the NFL, responds, Oh,
- 15:19Speaker 1: is Arizona playing USC tonight? Great? Great, Yes they are, Gronk,
- 15:27Speaker 1: And I love you for not being like up all
- 15:29Speaker 1: night like charting, like how you're gonna want to that's
- 15:31Speaker 1: the life of Gronk. He lives at day by day
- 15:33Speaker 1: and he just knows what he needs to know and yeah,
- 15:35Speaker 1: oh cool.
- 15:36Speaker 2: All right, So I say, dude, I have no dinner plans.
- 15:40Speaker 2: Why don't we get dinner?
- 15:42Speaker 1: Gronk and I have a dinner date at five thirty
- 15:45Speaker 1: in the evening Early Bird.
- 15:46Speaker 3: Special favorite dinner time.
- 15:48Speaker 2: Oh there's a.
- 15:49Speaker 1: New York Times trend piece that like, five point thirty
- 15:51Speaker 1: and six o'clock is the new dinner time for everyone
- 15:54Speaker 1: post pandemic.
- 15:54Speaker 2: Everyone's like, get me out of the house. I'm ready
- 15:56Speaker 2: to go. Let's just have an early night. Gronk is
- 15:59Speaker 2: down and I'm like, all right, where are we gonna go?
- 16:02Speaker 2: What are we gonna do?
- 16:03Speaker 1: And there's a fancy uh Mediterranean spot right across from
- 16:07Speaker 1: our hotel called Avra. There's an overa in New York City.
- 16:10Speaker 1: There's an opera in La I actually think there's a
- 16:12Speaker 1: couple averas in New York City and it's Mediterranean and
- 16:15Speaker 1: it's like one of these places where they.
- 16:17Speaker 2: Have the fish in the case on ice and.
- 16:19Speaker 1: You can like pick out the fish. And you know,
- 16:24Speaker 1: I don't do I don't go out very often during
- 16:26Speaker 1: the week. We have two kids at home. You know what,
- 16:29Speaker 1: maybe we'll maybe we'll.
- 16:30Speaker 2: Splurge a little bit.
- 16:31Speaker 1: And you know, if I'm being honest, Gronk's probably gonna
- 16:33Speaker 1: pick up the tab and I'll just pretend and do
- 16:34Speaker 1: like the pretend for the wallet. Like, you know, Gronk
- 16:36Speaker 1: doesn't need my money. If you want to go out
- 16:38Speaker 1: the dinner, I'm not gonna tell him no. All right,
- 16:39Speaker 1: So that's all in the back of my head. But
- 16:41Speaker 1: it is one of those spots where it's like, I
- 16:43Speaker 1: gotta wear pants, I gotta wear shoes. My shoes, I mean,
- 16:47Speaker 1: sneakers are fine, and probably a shirt with sleeves. So
- 16:50Speaker 1: I lay it out to Gronk. I'm like, here, there
- 16:52Speaker 1: are options. We can go in the hotel downstairs, whatever
- 16:55Speaker 1: across the street is this place Avre that's super fancy.
- 16:59Speaker 2: But you know, we could wear whatever.
- 17:01Speaker 1: They're not gonna turn us away, or we can go
- 17:04Speaker 1: anywhere you want in La Gronk.
- 17:05Speaker 2: The world is your oysters.
- 17:06Speaker 1: As long as I'm back in the hotel by seven
- 17:08Speaker 1: or eight and I can get in bed, we're good.
- 17:10Speaker 1: Gronk goes, Let's go to the fancy Mediterranean place. Let's
- 17:13Speaker 1: go to Ovra, I go, great, Aaron, you better believe,
- 17:17Speaker 1: I write, Gronk, Rob Gronkowski, a thirty four year old man,
- 17:20Speaker 1: the greatest head end to ever play the game. I write,
- 17:22Speaker 1: I'm a very explicit text. You have to wear sleeves,
- 17:26Speaker 1: can't wear mesh basketball shorts, we have to wear shoes.
- 17:30Speaker 2: And it's very expensive.
- 17:32Speaker 1: So I don't want you thinking like, what the hell
- 17:34Speaker 1: you brought me to this place? Gronk gos we could
- 17:37Speaker 1: be healthy? I go, yes, he goes great because Gronk
- 17:39Speaker 1: is a healthy like that's what he wants. Let me
- 17:42Speaker 1: tell you, I've been out with Hollywood celebrities. I've been
- 17:47Speaker 1: out with NFL Pro Football Hall of famers. I've had
- 17:51Speaker 1: lunches with Troy Aikman, I've had dinners with Michael Strahan.
- 18:00Speaker 2: I have never.
- 18:03Speaker 1: Had an experience quite like going out in with Rob Gronkowski.
- 18:08Speaker 1: And what do you mean by that? Is he the
- 18:10Speaker 1: class clown and the guy that's that? No, he's quiet,
- 18:15Speaker 1: but he's six foot seven and he's Gronk. So the
- 18:19Speaker 1: second you leave the hotel, I'm talking tourists from Europe,
- 18:24Speaker 1: tourists from Asia, Americans, natives of La He can't walk
- 18:30Speaker 1: two steps with people not freaking out. That's Gronk from TV.
- 18:34Speaker 1: That's Gronk from the commercials. And I did not envy him.
- 18:39Speaker 5: You know.
- 18:39Speaker 1: I think there was some celebrity event or some awards
- 18:42Speaker 1: show going on near us or something in our hotel,
- 18:46Speaker 1: so there was paparazzi outside. I immediately fall back the
- 18:51Speaker 1: paparazzi whatever, but there's also autograph seekers, and the paparazzi
- 18:54Speaker 1: didn't bother us. The autograph seekers jumped to Gronk.
- 18:57Speaker 2: And they're like, gron crack crack crock crow.
- 18:59Speaker 1: And I watched him because I was like, how does
- 19:00Speaker 1: he handle this? He says, one autograph of person. You know,
- 19:05Speaker 1: let's be quick, so kind and so nice to these
- 19:09Speaker 1: guys that could be vultures if they're autographed people like
- 19:12Speaker 1: you don't know if they're putting that immediately online.
- 19:14Speaker 2: And there were.
- 19:15Speaker 1: Many kids that immediately come out to Gronk and they
- 19:17Speaker 1: want a photo, and Gronk took photos.
- 19:19Speaker 2: With all of them.
- 19:21Speaker 1: Then we walked about two blocks to the hotel from
- 19:24Speaker 1: our hotel to this this Ovrea this restaurant, and as
- 19:28Speaker 1: we're walking, it's like just you know, like it's like
- 19:32Speaker 1: a like a swarm of bees, because like, once one
- 19:35Speaker 1: person sees that, the next person wants and it's women
- 19:39Speaker 1: and it's kids, and I'm like, this kind of has
- 19:42Speaker 1: to suck every time he leaves the hotel, every time
- 19:45Speaker 1: he goes out in public, and like this is Los Angeles,
- 19:47Speaker 1: isn't even Boston. Yeah, yeah, So he's kind to all
- 19:50Speaker 1: of them.
- 19:50Speaker 2: We sit down. I'm like, I'm sorry about that.
- 19:52Speaker 1: Man. We could take a car and he's like, no,
- 19:53Speaker 1: it's good to get out whatever. And he said, you
- 19:57Speaker 1: just got to kind of, you know, give the boundaries
- 19:59Speaker 1: and say just I'll do one autograph, one picture. I'm
- 20:01Speaker 1: not doing a ton, you know whatever. We sit, we
- 20:03Speaker 1: have a great dinner. I mean we're talking. For me
- 20:06Speaker 1: as a student of the game, in the history of
- 20:08Speaker 1: the game, this is like this is the kind of
- 20:10Speaker 1: stuff where it's like, all right, if we're gonna do
- 20:12Speaker 1: an auction, I would be I would put a lot
- 20:14Speaker 1: of money down to have a dinner with Rob Gronkowski.
- 20:16Speaker 1: We go through Brady, we go through Belichick. He's empty
- 20:20Speaker 1: in the bag on what it was like coming out
- 20:21Speaker 1: of college and joining that Patriots team that had already
- 20:23Speaker 1: won championships and then they didn't win it first, and
- 20:26Speaker 1: then like with a quest to get him.
- 20:28Speaker 2: Then we go to Tampa. We're talking at all.
- 20:30Speaker 1: I am so in love with this person, and you know,
- 20:33Speaker 1: he has a podcast guest and he was sweet as
- 20:34Speaker 1: can be, but like he is a genuinely great heart
- 20:37Speaker 1: and a great dude. And we have our dinner and Gronk,
- 20:41Speaker 1: which I loved, ordered salmon and a steak for his dinner.
- 20:44Speaker 1: I'm like, this guy's unbelievable, unbelievable. He had sleeves on,
- 20:49Speaker 1: he had pants on, he wore shoes that had his
- 20:52Speaker 1: toes covered. I was blown away at Gronk. We're having
- 20:55Speaker 1: the best time. Check comes, I pull up my credit card,
- 20:57Speaker 1: I'm ready to go, and Gronk does as I would imagine,
- 21:00Speaker 1: you know, but the waiter says, your dinner has been
- 21:04Speaker 1: taken care.
- 21:05Speaker 2: Of by a channel at the bar, to which.
- 21:09Speaker 1: I immediately say, oh my god, that's awesome.
- 21:13Speaker 2: That is so cool that happens.
- 21:17Speaker 1: And Gronk's reaction is an audible sigh.
- 21:24Speaker 2: What are you?
- 21:26Speaker 1: He goes with that comes something He's like, the money
- 21:29Speaker 1: is not an it, like I could buy my own dinner.
- 21:32Speaker 1: But now we've got to go over to the bar,
- 21:34Speaker 1: and I don't know what to what that entails, and
- 21:36Speaker 1: that means I'm taking selfies and I'm filming birthday videos
- 21:39Speaker 1: for Clarence at home, and I'm also buying this guy
- 21:42Speaker 1: a shot and it's an extra thirty minutes and I'm like.
- 21:45Speaker 2: God, the burden of being Gronk, like this is real.
- 21:48Speaker 1: So we're wrapping up dinner and I'm like, do you
- 21:51Speaker 1: not want to even go buy the bar? Do you
- 21:52Speaker 1: want to just He's like, well, the bill will take
- 21:54Speaker 1: a care. So Gronk, to his credit, I guess I'll
- 21:56Speaker 1: give us out, like I don't think he'd mind me
- 21:57Speaker 1: saying this, Like he takes care of the waiter in
- 22:00Speaker 1: a very handsome way, and I'm like, all right.
- 22:01Speaker 2: That's class. I like that.
- 22:03Speaker 1: And as we're walking, I'm like, let's go buy the
- 22:05Speaker 1: bar and at least find out. We walk by the bar,
- 22:07Speaker 1: nobody raises their hand, nobody says a word. Instead, the
- 22:10Speaker 1: bartender points to a gentleman probably in his forties or
- 22:14Speaker 1: fifties at the end of the bar and just points
- 22:16Speaker 1: at him, and Gronk kind of comes over and he's like,
- 22:19Speaker 1: all right, he's ready to do the pictures and the
- 22:21Speaker 1: guy says, hey, thanks for the lifetime. I'm amazing memories.
- 22:25Speaker 1: I'm a Patriots fan. It's the least I can do.
- 22:28Speaker 3: Oh wow.
- 22:29Speaker 2: And that was the entire interaction, and Gronk was like, no,
- 22:34Speaker 2: thank you.
- 22:35Speaker 1: That was a really nice gesture. And then Gronk goes,
- 22:37Speaker 1: you want a picture or something. The guy's like, sure,
- 22:39Speaker 1: I'll take a picture with you. Takes a picture with
- 22:42Speaker 1: the guy. The guy's father was there with him, takes
- 22:44Speaker 1: a picture that with the father, and we were on
- 22:46Speaker 1: our way and I'm like, what a badass story, and
- 22:50Speaker 1: what a badass the guy at the bar is like
- 22:53Speaker 1: a cool gesture. So I assume like that is the
- 22:57Speaker 1: dream scenario if you're an athlete and having an interaction
- 23:00Speaker 1: with a fan.
- 23:01Speaker 2: We never got the guy's name.
- 23:02Speaker 1: We don't know if he's from Boston or Attenborough or
- 23:06Speaker 1: from you name it, you know, Fairfield, Connecticut. I have
- 23:09Speaker 1: no idea, but thanks for the lifetime of memories. It's
- 23:13Speaker 1: the least I can do, Aaron, It's not that the
- 23:15Speaker 1: coolest story you've heard.
- 23:17Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean, you know, I in my head, I
- 23:20Speaker 4: also kind of was as you're telling the story, I'm like,
- 23:22Speaker 4: uh oh, like someone paid for it that means something,
- 23:25Speaker 4: just like Gronk said, and instead, this is like a
- 23:28Speaker 4: Pixar movie. I'm like tearing up that. The guy was
- 23:30Speaker 4: just like, no, this is just like a thank you.
- 23:32Speaker 4: It was so fun to watch you, and like, that's amazing.
- 23:35Speaker 4: I love that great story. Right, more stories like that
- 23:39Speaker 4: to come.
- 23:39Speaker 1: If you listen to the season with Peter Schrager, you
- 23:41Speaker 1: get these amazing bangers.
- 23:42Speaker 2: I will also add this.
- 23:44Speaker 1: The following Sunday morning, I'm there for Fox NFL kickoff.
- 23:48Speaker 2: We have a great show.
- 23:49Speaker 1: It's me, it's Edelman, it's Carissa, it's it's Woodson, it's
- 23:53Speaker 1: Vic whatever.
- 23:54Speaker 2: It's great. We're having a blast.
- 23:56Speaker 1: It's it's an awesome show. We kick butt. The Fox
- 23:59Speaker 1: NFL Sunday Show is after that, and you know that's
- 24:01Speaker 1: the heavy hitters. It's Howie, it's Terry.
- 24:04Speaker 2: It's Strayhan, it's Glazy, it's Kurt.
- 24:08Speaker 1: But the baseball guys were there too because they're doing
- 24:11Speaker 1: their World Series coverage.
- 24:12Speaker 2: So because the Baseball Studio.
- 24:16Speaker 1: Show was on that night, you had Big Poppy, David Ortiz,
- 24:21Speaker 1: Alex Rodriguez, and Derek Jeter and usually I keep to myself,
- 24:25Speaker 1: I'm not sure they were like, why don't we get
- 24:27Speaker 1: all the groups together and take a photo? And as
- 24:30Speaker 1: we're waiting in the bullpen, no pun intended to take
- 24:33Speaker 1: a photo. They're just like, everyone, just go over there.
- 24:36Speaker 1: It's me and Edelman is talking about the show we
- 24:38Speaker 1: just had, and Jeter just slides in and I had
- 24:42Speaker 1: a five minute conversation with Julian Edelman with Derek Jeter,
- 24:45Speaker 1: and can I tell you he's cooler? It also he's
- 24:49Speaker 1: the man, so here I am. And I grew up
- 24:52Speaker 1: in New Jersey in the nineties, and you know, I
- 24:56Speaker 1: was in college in the early two thousands, like they
- 24:59Speaker 1: won three World Series and four years. I know exactly
- 25:02Speaker 1: where I was when Jeter hit the home run in November.
- 25:05Speaker 1: I knew exactly where I was when Jeter did the
- 25:07Speaker 1: backhanded flip against the Oakland A's.
- 25:09Speaker 2: Grew up a Yankee fan. Jeter was one of the
- 25:11Speaker 2: Core four. I didn't geek out to him.
- 25:13Speaker 1: I tried to play it pretty cool. But between Gronk
- 25:17Speaker 1: and Jeter, I flew home.
- 25:18Speaker 2: I was on cloud night.
- 25:19Speaker 1: I'm like, yeah, they say you don't want to meet
- 25:21Speaker 1: your heroes. Both those guys and Gronk's probably ten years younger.
- 25:24Speaker 5: Than me.
- 25:24Speaker 1: But both those guys just great dudes, and was really
- 25:28Speaker 1: excited to have those interactions. All right, now onto our guests.
- 25:34Speaker 1: I love football. I also have one week spot. I'm
- 25:39Speaker 1: not an Ex's and OS guy.
- 25:41Speaker 2: I try to be.
- 25:42Speaker 1: I like to think I am, but I didn't play
- 25:44Speaker 1: high school football. I didn't coach high school football, and
- 25:48Speaker 1: I certainly am not one of these tape grinders who
- 25:52Speaker 1: can do the All twenty two and sit in a
- 25:55Speaker 1: lab for twelve hours and break down you know why
- 25:58Speaker 1: this full back is better than the next. Now, Fortunately,
- 26:01Speaker 1: there are a lot of players in that game, and
- 26:04Speaker 1: there are a lot of really talented young play in
- 26:07Speaker 1: that game, guys on social media who crank out All
- 26:09Speaker 1: twenty two clips and break down why this offense is
- 26:13Speaker 1: more innovative this year than last, why this play caller
- 26:17Speaker 1: is truly an innovator, and why these players are so special.
- 26:23Speaker 1: You go on Twitter on a Monday morning after the
- 26:26Speaker 1: All twenty two is released, and there is just a
- 26:28Speaker 1: flurry of great clips and cutups, and there might be
- 26:32Speaker 1: no better operator of one of these feeds than Ted Win.
- 26:38Speaker 2: Who is Ted Win? I didn't know I had to
- 26:41Speaker 2: have him on my podcast. He's our guests this week.
- 26:48Speaker 1: So typically on this podcast we try to bring on
- 26:51Speaker 1: general managers. We bring on coaches, head coaches, offensive coordinators,
- 26:55Speaker 1: defensive coordinators. We bring on actors who are fans, we
- 26:59Speaker 1: bring on musicians who are fans, we bring on media folks.
- 27:02Speaker 2: And then every so.
- 27:02Speaker 1: Often I'm like, who I want to get to know
- 27:04Speaker 1: that that guy or that girl.
- 27:07Speaker 2: I follow them on social media.
- 27:08Speaker 1: They're really smart and I want to learn more about them.
- 27:12Speaker 1: And in this case, this is how this this week's
- 27:14Speaker 1: guest came to be on the season with Peter Schrager.
- 27:16Speaker 1: I've been following ted win stuff for a while. He
- 27:19Speaker 1: is a staff writer at the Athletic but in recent
- 27:23Speaker 1: years he starts doing these cutups on social media of
- 27:26Speaker 1: the best plays of the week and how things happen,
- 27:29Speaker 1: using All twenty two film, which the NFL releases after
- 27:32Speaker 1: the games on Sunday. I find his stuff incredibly educational,
- 27:35Speaker 1: and I'm also I marvel at how fast he can
- 27:38Speaker 1: turn these things around. And his passion and love for
- 27:41Speaker 1: cool offense and cool defense is obvious if you follow
- 27:45Speaker 1: him anywhere on social media or you read his stuff
- 27:48Speaker 1: in the Athletics and with no further ado the man himself,
- 27:51Speaker 1: Ted Winn, thank you for joining me on the show.
- 27:54Speaker 6: Oh prom thanks for having me on.
- 27:56Speaker 5: Longtime fan, you know, watched you on TV for a
- 27:58Speaker 5: long time, so it's kind of cool.
- 28:00Speaker 6: It's real being able to talk to you.
- 28:02Speaker 1: Yeah. Look, I do a segment on Good Morning Football
- 28:05Speaker 1: called cool Plays, Bro, And I would be lying if
- 28:08Speaker 1: I don't often go to your feed and say, okay,
- 28:10Speaker 1: does my stuff align with Ted's because a lot of
- 28:12Speaker 1: times I'm getting stuff from different teams and different viewers
- 28:16Speaker 1: on Twitter saying hey, there's a segment for the show.
- 28:20Speaker 1: It's all about the best play designs and the best
- 28:22Speaker 1: cool plays.
- 28:23Speaker 2: Like you got to include this one.
- 28:24Speaker 1: And then if I put my list together and I'm
- 28:26Speaker 1: missing something, a lot of times I'll say, well, what's
- 28:28Speaker 1: Ted Gott? How do you do it so rapidly? How
- 28:31Speaker 1: do you have that stuff up? Because I got to say,
- 28:33Speaker 1: we're recording this on a Tuesday morning and already you've
- 28:36Speaker 1: posted like forty clips from Sunday's games. Give me your
- 28:41Speaker 1: daily process and how you digest this film so quickly
- 28:44Speaker 1: and you're able to put it up on social media
- 28:45Speaker 1: to share it with your many viewers and listeners and followers.
- 28:48Speaker 5: Yeah, well, you know, the process starts on Sunday. I
- 28:52Speaker 5: finally got Sunday ticket this year. Now I don't know
- 28:54Speaker 5: how I live without it. So I'm just like switching
- 28:57Speaker 5: furiously between game, you know, the big matchups every week
- 29:01Speaker 5: and or whatever, you know, whatever game has the most
- 29:04Speaker 5: fantasy players I have playing on it.
- 29:07Speaker 6: So on Sundays, I write.
- 29:09Speaker 5: A quick roundtable about just with my other writers on
- 29:13Speaker 5: the Athletic about what's going around going on around the league.
- 29:17Speaker 5: And then on Monday, when all twenty two comes out
- 29:19Speaker 5: in the morning, I'm just like, you know, just trying
- 29:21Speaker 5: to watch as much as I can, going through as
- 29:23Speaker 5: many games as I can, just so I could put
- 29:25Speaker 5: together an article that a column that I have out
- 29:28Speaker 5: every Tuesday morning about three coaching decisions that I like
- 29:31Speaker 5: or three coaching decisions that I didn't like. And then
- 29:35Speaker 5: Tuesday I'm watching a little bit more. And sometimes I'll
- 29:37Speaker 5: write another article that comes out a little later in
- 29:41Speaker 5: the week, like this last week, we me and Jordan
- 29:44Speaker 5: Rugrieg teamed up to write about Sean mcvay's next iteration
- 29:49Speaker 5: of his offense, which I thought was pretty interesting. And
- 29:52Speaker 5: the rest of the days I'm just trying to catch
- 29:53Speaker 5: up on the rest of the games and creating content
- 29:56Speaker 5: for social media.
- 29:57Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 29:57Speaker 1: So I grew up on the show Edge NFL Matchup
- 30:00Speaker 1: and that was on ESPN Film the NFL Films and
- 30:03Speaker 1: Mount Laurel. And for years it was original Jaworski, I think,
- 30:07Speaker 1: and then it was sal Pal was involved, and then
- 30:10Speaker 1: they went through an iteration with Matt Bowen was involved,
- 30:12Speaker 1: and like year after year it was sterling sharp. It
- 30:15Speaker 1: was all these guys and it was the only place
- 30:17Speaker 1: that they would do film breakdown and film study. And
- 30:21Speaker 1: I wasn't that guy. I didn't play high school football.
- 30:23Speaker 1: I didn't coach high school football, and yet I would devour it.
- 30:26Speaker 1: Merrill Hodge, all these guys, and they would say, well,
- 30:28Speaker 1: here's how this happened. And it was almost like a
- 30:31Speaker 1: biology class, like here here is how you get that
- 30:35Speaker 1: famous play that you love, or here's how this player
- 30:37Speaker 1: was so open yourself. Did you play high school football?
- 30:41Speaker 1: Did you coach high school football? Because the way you
- 30:44Speaker 1: speak and know all the terminology, I have to think
- 30:47Speaker 1: you are beyond just a fan of the game that
- 30:49Speaker 1: you actually live and breed the stuff too.
- 30:51Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 30:52Speaker 5: So I played I actually played quarterback. In high school,
- 30:55Speaker 5: by played quarterback in a triple option offense, so I
- 30:58Speaker 5: was basically another running back. We threw the ball maybe
- 31:00Speaker 5: five times of games. The volnaball is kind of like
- 31:03Speaker 5: a trick play for us. But you know, playing an
- 31:05Speaker 5: option you learn a lot about blocking angles, do you know?
- 31:09Speaker 5: You learn about how to set up the next play
- 31:12Speaker 5: and things like that. And after high school, I knew
- 31:15Speaker 5: I wasn't good enough to play college, but my coach
- 31:18Speaker 5: asked me to come back and help coach football.
- 31:20Speaker 6: So I coached high school football for a long time.
- 31:23Speaker 5: And I think that really helps me in explaining some
- 31:27Speaker 5: of these concepts because you know, like try explaining you know,
- 31:30Speaker 5: blocking rules for power to a you know, fifteen year
- 31:33Speaker 5: old freshman.
- 31:34Speaker 6: So I have to try to do it as simply
- 31:36Speaker 6: as possible.
- 31:36Speaker 5: And I think that's what people like for my articles
- 31:39Speaker 5: or work that I will try to really break down
- 31:42Speaker 5: these complex concepts. But I think I do it in
- 31:45Speaker 5: a way that's digestible for everyone.
- 31:48Speaker 1: Yeah, and so let's go through it. So from you're
- 31:52Speaker 1: at where you're at, you see Davis? Is that where
- 31:54Speaker 1: you were in college?
- 31:55Speaker 5: Yeah, I went, I went to U See Davis, and
- 31:59Speaker 5: but I coached high school.
- 32:00Speaker 1: I yeah, yeah, so you're at You See Davis. While
- 32:02Speaker 1: you're at You See Davis, you go and you're also
- 32:04Speaker 1: coaching a high school team.
- 32:06Speaker 5: Yes, so I'm also coaching high school team. And it
- 32:09Speaker 5: was you know, it was a long drive to get
- 32:12Speaker 5: to the team after classes in college.
- 32:14Speaker 6: So it was a lot of work.
- 32:16Speaker 5: But I love doing it, and you know, I got
- 32:18Speaker 5: to get to know some of the coaches at You
- 32:19Speaker 5: See Davis and they helped me out with learning a
- 32:22Speaker 5: little bit more of the game and scheming and that
- 32:24Speaker 5: kind of thing. And after Davis, I wanted to be
- 32:28Speaker 5: a high school teacher because I loved coaching football. So
- 32:31Speaker 5: I got my teaching credential. I went into coaching and
- 32:35Speaker 5: I loved it, but to be honest, I really did
- 32:38Speaker 5: not like the teaching aspects of it. You know, like
- 32:40Speaker 5: teaching pe is hard nowadays, like kids just don't want
- 32:43Speaker 5: to run sometimes, and it's just I just felt like
- 32:45Speaker 5: pulling teeth. And while I was coaching, I had a
- 32:48Speaker 5: blog I was doing for fun, and I was just
- 32:50Speaker 5: doing a blog about the Raiders. My friends encouraged me
- 32:54Speaker 5: to do it because they wanted to hear my thoughts
- 32:57Speaker 5: on it and the blog just kind of grew and grew,
- 33:00Speaker 5: and I got a lot more viewers than I thought
- 33:03Speaker 5: I would, and then you know, my follower count started
- 33:06Speaker 5: going up on Twitter. And actually, while I was coaching
- 33:10Speaker 5: and teaching, I found out I had stomach cancer. Actually,
- 33:14Speaker 5: so yeah, so I had to go get my stomach removed.
- 33:17Speaker 5: So I don't have a stomach believer or not. But
- 33:19Speaker 5: everything's fine. I'm like totally healthy now. But that really
- 33:22Speaker 5: kind of inspired me to pivot to a different career
- 33:26Speaker 5: and from I kind of retired from teaching and I
- 33:30Speaker 5: just went to sports journalism full time and I just
- 33:34Speaker 5: put everything into my blog and then the Athletic called
- 33:37Speaker 5: me one day.
- 33:38Speaker 6: And decided to hire me.
- 33:39Speaker 5: And I was on a contract job for about a
- 33:43Speaker 5: year just covering the Raiders of Niners, and when they
- 33:45Speaker 5: both didn't make the playoffs, I decided I was going
- 33:48Speaker 5: to write about some of the playoff teams, and that
- 33:50Speaker 5: year the Eagles played the Vikings, I wrote an article
- 33:52Speaker 5: about them, and one of the Vikings coaches actually contacted
- 33:56Speaker 5: the Athletic and said it was the most accurate articles
- 33:58Speaker 5: you ever read. And that got me the full time
- 34:01Speaker 5: job at the Athletic and I've been doing it ever since.
- 34:04Speaker 1: So you saw that Tory Smith sleeflicker from Nick Foles
- 34:07Speaker 1: and he said, okay, let me explain how that went
- 34:09Speaker 1: down and why Kyle Rudolph's games starting touchdown meant nothing
- 34:12Speaker 1: in the grand scheme of things. Yeah, I remember everything.
- 34:15Speaker 1: And dude, your story is inspiring. So you're the head
- 34:19Speaker 1: coach eventually at Mount Eden High School football, while you're
- 34:24Speaker 1: also a student trying to become a teacher, and while
- 34:27Speaker 1: that's also going on, you're writing a blog and doing
- 34:31Speaker 1: Raiders analysis for your blog.
- 34:33Speaker 2: For you do you understand?
- 34:35Speaker 1: Like I get emails and I get you know, texts,
- 34:38Speaker 1: and all, Hey, can you meet with my friend's son.
- 34:40Speaker 1: He he's a college junior at Syracuse or he's a
- 34:44Speaker 1: you know, he's a college freshman.
- 34:45Speaker 2: He wants to do what you do. Ted.
- 34:47Speaker 1: I hear your story still at undergrad then in grad school,
- 34:52Speaker 1: trying to get a full time job as a teacher,
- 34:54Speaker 1: but also on the side coaching high school football and
- 34:56Speaker 1: also doing a blog that is as inspiring as it
- 34:59Speaker 1: gets to saying, yeah, you know what, it's not going
- 35:00Speaker 1: to ever be handed to You have to go and
- 35:02Speaker 1: chase it, and eventually you get that call from the Athletic.
- 35:04Speaker 1: Who was that call from and how did they find you?
- 35:07Speaker 6: So it's an interesting story.
- 35:09Speaker 5: It was from Jimmy Durkin, who who's still an editor
- 35:13Speaker 5: at the Athletic, and Shield Capatia, who works at The
- 35:17Speaker 5: Ringer now, was one of the first hires at the Athletic,
- 35:20Speaker 5: and he's been following me. He was following me on
- 35:22Speaker 5: Twitter for a while at a time, and when he
- 35:25Speaker 5: got hired, he got asked who they think they should
- 35:28Speaker 5: hire and I was on his list list of people
- 35:32Speaker 5: that you know.
- 35:33Speaker 6: He thought that I.
- 35:34Speaker 1: Know Shield very well. Did you know him personally or
- 35:36Speaker 1: he was just a fan from Afar?
- 35:37Speaker 6: I know him at all that social media.
- 35:39Speaker 2: That's amazing to me.
- 35:41Speaker 5: He was just following me on Twitter. But we never talked.
- 35:44Speaker 5: And yeah, he gave me a really big recommendation with
- 35:49Speaker 5: the Athletic and me and Shield are good friends now,
- 35:51Speaker 5: but at the time we didn't say one word to
- 35:53Speaker 5: each other.
- 35:54Speaker 6: And he was one of the main reasons I got hired.
- 35:57Speaker 1: I love this story. Okay, so then you go from
- 35:59Speaker 1: someone who's got an interest and then you're now suddenly
- 36:02Speaker 1: maybe critiquing some of these teams and I would imagine
- 36:05Speaker 1: whether it's John Gruden who was running the offense at
- 36:08Speaker 1: the Raiders, or it was Kyle Shanahan who was doing
- 36:10Speaker 1: cool stuff with the Niners. They could say they don't
- 36:13Speaker 1: pay attention to anything, but when you've got someone who
- 36:15Speaker 1: knows their stuff and they're breaking down film, I'm sure
- 36:18Speaker 1: it made waves.
- 36:19Speaker 2: Did it ever get to the team level?
- 36:20Speaker 1: You would hear back from some of the teams that
- 36:22Speaker 1: maybe you were being a little critical of.
- 36:25Speaker 6: Yeah, for sure, I you know, I don't.
- 36:29Speaker 5: I don't think I could go into too much of
- 36:31Speaker 5: my team interaction, but you know, I hear from agents.
- 36:36Speaker 5: I've gotten to know some coaches, which is, you know,
- 36:39Speaker 5: on a text by text basis, which is kind of cool.
- 36:43Speaker 5: You know, I never thought i'd be in that position.
- 36:46Speaker 5: You know, I kind of helped out some coaches that
- 36:48Speaker 5: had questions about other teams if they didn't have like
- 36:52Speaker 5: a lot of time to research something, you know, I
- 36:55Speaker 5: might help.
- 36:55Speaker 6: Out in that situation.
- 36:57Speaker 5: So it's kind of cool getting to know all these
- 37:00Speaker 5: coaches you know around the league. But yes, you know,
- 37:03Speaker 5: sometimes when you're a little too critical, sometimes you get
- 37:06Speaker 5: a little texts, you know, saying.
- 37:07Speaker 6: Like hey, you know, like I did this, yes, this
- 37:10Speaker 6: reason and that reason.
- 37:11Speaker 1: So I'm watching Mike McDaniel's offense against the Giants on Sunday.
- 37:15Speaker 1: I'm flying back from Los Angeles and the game is
- 37:18Speaker 1: on on my Sunday ticket, which amazingly works in the
- 37:20Speaker 1: air as well, which I think is the greatest commercial
- 37:23Speaker 1: for the thing. You could be twenty thousand feet up
- 37:25Speaker 1: and on go go Wi Fi and it works. And
- 37:29Speaker 1: out of the gates they're running such crazy thing and
- 37:31Speaker 1: it's motion and it's different personnel groups and it's a
- 37:35Speaker 1: fake reverse and then it's a handoff to him, but.
- 37:37Speaker 2: Then Waddle's open.
- 37:38Speaker 1: It's like, when you're watching the games in real time,
- 37:41Speaker 1: are you giddy as hell? Like? I cannot wait to
- 37:43Speaker 1: break this down? Are you taking notes? Are you earmarking?
- 37:46Speaker 2: Oh? How did that? I can't wait to see the film?
- 37:48Speaker 1: And then when the film does come out or is
- 37:51Speaker 1: that what you devoured? Or are you doing the broadcast
- 37:53Speaker 1: copy also? And you're like, I got to be the
- 37:54Speaker 1: first one to put this out on social media because
- 37:56Speaker 1: if I don't, Brian Pauldinger's on it, and if Brian
- 37:59Speaker 1: Baldinger's not on it, Ben sol Lax on it, and
- 38:01Speaker 1: if Ben Solax not on it, someone else is on it.
- 38:03Speaker 2: Like I can only imagine there's a very niche group
- 38:05Speaker 2: of you guys who.
- 38:05Speaker 1: Break it that on social media and it's devoured by
- 38:08Speaker 1: the fans. Is it a race to be the first
- 38:11Speaker 1: to say, hey, let me show you what I saw.
- 38:13Speaker 5: Yeah, it is to a certain point, because you know,
- 38:16Speaker 5: once somebody else puts out a play, then you know,
- 38:18Speaker 5: you only have so many takes on one play, right,
- 38:21Speaker 5: So it is a bit of a race to see,
- 38:24Speaker 5: you know, who could get.
- 38:26Speaker 6: It out first.
- 38:26Speaker 5: And sometimes you can see things from the TV copy,
- 38:29Speaker 5: but sometimes you can't because you know, sometimes it's so
- 38:31Speaker 5: zoomed into the quarterback you can't see what the secondary
- 38:34Speaker 5: is doing that you can't really have a real take
- 38:38Speaker 5: on the play design or how it unfolded until the
- 38:42Speaker 5: All twenty two comes out, and you know, the All
- 38:44Speaker 5: twenty two comes out early on Monday, and all the
- 38:47Speaker 5: film grinders are up early, you know, trying to.
- 38:49Speaker 6: Get those those clips out. So it is a bit
- 38:51Speaker 6: of a I mean, it didn't used to.
- 38:53Speaker 5: Be like that, you know, like a few years ago,
- 38:54Speaker 5: like me and like another guy was like, you know,
- 38:58Speaker 5: the only guys doing this, and now like there's a
- 39:00Speaker 5: lot of film analyists out there, and I think the
- 39:03Speaker 5: hunger for this type of content has grown as well.
- 39:07Speaker 1: What is your Twitter feed? If we were to follow
- 39:09Speaker 1: you on Twitter? So everyone at home who's listening to
- 39:11Speaker 1: this and is not necessarily familiar with your work, it's
- 39:13Speaker 1: all right, I'll give this a shot. What is the feed?
- 39:15Speaker 2: And spelled out?
- 39:16Speaker 6: It's FB underscore film analysis.
- 39:20Speaker 1: Easy as that football film analysis like that sounds pretty
- 39:24Speaker 1: good unless FB has some other meaning. I would assume
- 39:26Speaker 1: it's football, all right. So you're doing that in a
- 39:29Speaker 1: week to week basis, But you're also becoming sort of
- 39:33Speaker 1: a taste maker, as the clips you decide to share
- 39:37Speaker 1: with your audience are sort of becoming a trend of
- 39:40Speaker 1: who is ted into and what is it. I figured
- 39:43Speaker 1: you and I would have some fun. I do my
- 39:45Speaker 1: segment on NFL Network, You do yours on athletic and
- 39:48Speaker 1: on socials. Let's have a little bit of a game
- 39:50Speaker 1: where we go back and forth and we kind of
- 39:52Speaker 1: share what we think as far as some of the
- 39:54Speaker 1: best offenses, best players, all that stuff. So let's go first,
- 39:57Speaker 1: Let's say let's do it a draft. If you will,
- 40:00Speaker 1: most entertaining offense in the NFL the one that you
- 40:04Speaker 1: are racing to see and that you just get giddy over.
- 40:06Speaker 1: Right now that you say, oh that is good, that
- 40:08Speaker 1: is good stuff. Which is the unit that you get
- 40:11Speaker 1: so excited about.
- 40:12Speaker 5: Yeah, So I didn't want to give you a generic
- 40:14Speaker 5: answer answering this, but I legitimately love watching the Indianapolis Colts.
- 40:20Speaker 1: Really Shane Stikeen too high.
- 40:22Speaker 2: Let's go talk about it all verts.
- 40:24Speaker 5: Yeah, I love watching offenses that don't have a wealth
- 40:29Speaker 5: of talent, but they maximize what they do have with
- 40:32Speaker 5: great coaching, and I feel like Shane Stikeen does an
- 40:35Speaker 5: amazing job of that.
- 40:36Speaker 6: I love watching Anthony Richardson play.
- 40:39Speaker 5: I love the pieces they have and they're so creative
- 40:42Speaker 5: with their formations, their run options, their RPOs, and the
- 40:47Speaker 5: way they maximize the receiving talent they have. They have
- 40:50Speaker 5: a decent offensive line, they don't have like an overpowering
- 40:53Speaker 5: offensive line, but just the way they are able to
- 40:57Speaker 5: even out the numbers with Anthony Richardson and his running.
- 41:00Speaker 5: Unfortunately he's hurt right now, but before he was hurt,
- 41:03Speaker 5: he was actually leading the league in explode the play rate,
- 41:07Speaker 5: so runs of twelve or more yards or passes of
- 41:10Speaker 5: more than twenty yards. And I also love that he's
- 41:13Speaker 5: bringing four verts back and four versus is exactly what
- 41:16Speaker 5: it sounds like. It's four receivers on four verticals. And
- 41:20Speaker 5: the play was going extinct for a little while because
- 41:22Speaker 5: all these defenses were playing too high and keeping two
- 41:26Speaker 5: safeties back. So it's hard to run four verts against
- 41:29Speaker 5: those type of defenses. But Shane Stiken, you know he's
- 41:32Speaker 5: calling a ton with Anthony Richardson. Obviously, you know teams
- 41:36Speaker 5: have to bring extra defender in the box to defend
- 41:38Speaker 5: their run game. But Richardson's one of bet Richardson's best
- 41:42Speaker 5: throw is that steam throw, and they're calling.
- 41:45Speaker 1: Over yeah, And that's he made the point. It's not
- 41:49Speaker 1: like he's got Moss and Welker and Dante Stalworth out there.
- 41:52Speaker 1: It's it's, you know, a combination of Pittman, Pierce and
- 41:57Speaker 1: Josh Downs. These are not Hall of Fame players by
- 42:00Speaker 1: any means, and yet he's making it. Now here's my
- 42:02Speaker 1: question with that they go to Minshew three different times
- 42:05Speaker 1: already does the because I don't, I don't follow it
- 42:07Speaker 1: like you do. As far as within the x's and o's,
- 42:09Speaker 1: does the offense drastically change? Is there a Minshew version
- 42:12Speaker 1: of the offense, or does Minshew run the same offense
- 42:14Speaker 1: that Richardson's more or less running.
- 42:16Speaker 5: There's definitely a Minshew version of the offense. You know,
- 42:19Speaker 5: obviously they are going to cut down on the run options.
- 42:22Speaker 5: They still could use their run pass option concepts a lot,
- 42:26Speaker 5: but you know, obviously you're not going to run a
- 42:28Speaker 5: ton of zone read or counterbash with Minshew back there,
- 42:33Speaker 5: and they're going to be a lot more pass orientated.
- 42:35Speaker 5: And he does a great job of adjusting to either quarterbacks.
- 42:38Speaker 5: So it's a really fun offense to watch and people forget.
- 42:42Speaker 5: Shane Stiken also was responsible for Justin Herbert's rookie year,
- 42:47Speaker 5: which was one of the greatest quarterback rookie years that
- 42:50Speaker 5: we've ever seen. Too, So he's worked with multiple types
- 42:53Speaker 5: of quarterbacks and he's gotten the most out of him.
- 42:55Speaker 5: So to me, he's one of the most underrated offensive
- 42:59Speaker 5: play callers and designers in the league.
- 43:01Speaker 1: Well now it's his you and AA. For a while there,
- 43:03Speaker 1: it was like, well, you know he's in San Dieg,
- 43:06Speaker 1: but that's also Anthony Lynn's an offensive coach, and you
- 43:09Speaker 1: don't know who's doing well. And then he's in Philly
- 43:11Speaker 1: and Sirianni's an offensive coach, so we're not sure it's
- 43:14Speaker 1: it's him now like this is there's no hey, yeah,
- 43:17Speaker 1: but it's him.
- 43:18Speaker 2: I'm gonna go McDaniel.
- 43:20Speaker 1: I know that San Francisco is doing a lot of
- 43:21Speaker 1: fun stuff, but like you tell me, does it seem
- 43:24Speaker 1: even different than last year that Mike has even up
- 43:26Speaker 1: to this game even more? It feels like I'm watching
- 43:27Speaker 1: a CFL offense with all the pre snap motion.
- 43:30Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 43:30Speaker 5: No, to me, he's the most creative play caller in
- 43:32Speaker 5: the league. Like, I love watching what he's doing. I
- 43:35Speaker 5: love that little short out motion that they're using now
- 43:38Speaker 5: because last year they were using fly motion to get
- 43:42Speaker 5: Tyreek Hill into full speed and running towards the.
- 43:45Speaker 6: Line of scrimmage.
- 43:46Speaker 5: Like you said, it's kind of like the CFL, right,
- 43:48Speaker 5: Like they're getting guys running full speed to line of scrimmage.
- 43:51Speaker 5: But when you're getting when you're running across the center,
- 43:53Speaker 5: the team's going to adjust and the defenses could bring
- 43:56Speaker 5: a safety that side. But now that they're doing it
- 43:58Speaker 5: on the same side, defenses can't adjust because they snapped
- 44:01Speaker 5: the ball and you know, one second and you have
- 44:04Speaker 5: Tyreek Hill running full speed at you. It's a really
- 44:07Speaker 5: tough thing to defend. And they're running all these cracked
- 44:11Speaker 5: toss plays. I've never seen an NFL offense run as
- 44:13Speaker 5: many tosses as they have, and they have one hundred
- 44:16Speaker 5: ways to run them too, you know. So it's it's
- 44:18Speaker 5: really fun to watch, and it's the most copied offense
- 44:20Speaker 5: around the league. Like if you're watching teams around the league,
- 44:23Speaker 5: now they're running that same motion. They're running all this
- 44:26Speaker 5: toss because of of what the Dolphins are doing.
- 44:29Speaker 1: Here's the next question. If you have one game and
- 44:32Speaker 1: you have two weeks to prepare, say it's a Super Bowl,
- 44:34Speaker 1: say it's just you know, week one, and you want
- 44:37Speaker 1: to get the most creative play caller or maybe the
- 44:40Speaker 1: most decisive play caller out there.
- 44:42Speaker 2: Who is your pick?
- 44:43Speaker 1: Who's who you going to war with, Who's going to
- 44:45Speaker 1: be the guy that's going to be downed up for you?
- 44:46Speaker 6: To me, it's got to be Mike McDaniel.
- 44:48Speaker 5: I mean, you know, like we talked about the motions
- 44:52Speaker 5: and the toss and I feel like they're taking all
- 44:54Speaker 5: those little wacky things that San Francisco used to do
- 44:57Speaker 5: sometimes and they've turned it into an entire offense, like
- 45:00Speaker 5: the way they use their personnel. They come out in
- 45:03Speaker 5: twenty one personnel, but they'll line up and empty ho
- 45:06Speaker 5: twenty one personnel and they'll line up on these spread
- 45:09Speaker 5: formations and then you never know.
- 45:11Speaker 6: Exactly who's gonna get the ball.
- 45:13Speaker 5: You know, the first play the game against the Giants,
- 45:15Speaker 5: they had they came out in thirty one personnel, so
- 45:17Speaker 5: that's three backs, one tight end, one receiver, and then
- 45:20Speaker 5: they motioned Jalen Waddle into the.
- 45:22Speaker 6: Backfield the reverse.
- 45:25Speaker 5: Yeah, they take a run to him and they reversed
- 45:27Speaker 5: it to Arcane for a huge game. So it's like
- 45:30Speaker 5: you never know who's gonna have the ball. But at
- 45:31Speaker 5: the end of the day, they're just running two back runs.
- 45:34Speaker 5: But they're doing it with all this window dressing and
- 45:37Speaker 5: world class speed. So it's really fun the way that
- 45:40Speaker 5: they're using their personnel. And I just think that's just
- 45:43Speaker 5: the Dolphin speed and McDaniels just like a marriage made
- 45:47Speaker 5: in heaven.
- 45:48Speaker 1: I'm going to go to San Francisco, and I know
- 45:50Speaker 1: that's like a variation of you almost feel like ones
- 45:53Speaker 1: is they're like brothers on a branch because they work
- 45:55Speaker 1: together for so long. But the positionless player the amount
- 45:59Speaker 1: of times that you see Deebo Samuel lined up at
- 46:02Speaker 1: running back, or you see Kyle Yustchek lined up at
- 46:05Speaker 1: tight end, or you see Kittle in motion, like I
- 46:09Speaker 1: just don't know how to defend it, and it's finally
- 46:11Speaker 1: all coming together. And what the Niners are doing on
- 46:13Speaker 1: offense this year. They've scored thirty points in every single
- 46:15Speaker 1: NFL game they've played this season. They are winning by
- 46:18Speaker 1: an average of twenty points per game over opponents. And
- 46:21Speaker 1: if you're saying, well, that doesn't really blieve it, think
- 46:24Speaker 1: about point spreads. Think about when you see the lines
- 46:27Speaker 1: every week, you never see a twenty point point spread.
- 46:29Speaker 2: You never see that.
- 46:30Speaker 1: It's the largest point spread I think ever in a
- 46:32Speaker 1: history of a game. They're winning by that against good
- 46:35Speaker 1: NFL teams and good NFL offenses and defenses. They've done
- 46:38Speaker 1: that to the Steelers, They've done that to the Cowboys.
- 46:41Speaker 1: I just think he's totally in his bag right now
- 46:43Speaker 1: and perty.
- 46:44Speaker 2: Might be the perfect operator.
- 46:45Speaker 1: Your thoughts on as someone who was in the Bay
- 46:47Speaker 1: Area covering Kyle since he got there, Your thoughts on
- 46:51Speaker 1: this version the twenty twenty three nine.
- 46:52Speaker 5: Ers, Yeah, I mean it's Kyle is, you know, the originator,
- 46:57Speaker 5: and I've loved watching his offenses, and like you said,
- 47:01Speaker 5: they were one of the they were the first team
- 47:04Speaker 5: to really do this positionless football thing. And then you
- 47:08Speaker 5: add CMC into the mix, and he's just, you know,
- 47:11Speaker 5: the perfect player to do it because he's so good
- 47:14Speaker 5: as a receiver. They'll line him up, line him up
- 47:16Speaker 5: on the outside, and they'll have him run slug os
- 47:20Speaker 5: and double moves, and you know, you never.
- 47:22Speaker 6: See that from a team.
- 47:23Speaker 5: And you know, I think we hear a lot about
- 47:26Speaker 5: coaches always talking about using this great running back, you know,
- 47:29Speaker 5: like b John Robinson or something as a receiver or
- 47:32Speaker 5: Jamier Gibbs as a receiver, and we almost never see
- 47:35Speaker 5: it really.
- 47:36Speaker 6: Come into fruition.
- 47:37Speaker 5: Like we'll see it once in a while, but you know,
- 47:40Speaker 5: you don't really see an offense really make it a
- 47:43Speaker 5: huge part of their offense. But with CMC and his
- 47:46Speaker 5: receiving skills, Kyle takes full.
- 47:48Speaker 6: Advantage of it.
- 47:49Speaker 5: They line up on the slot, they line him up outside,
- 47:51Speaker 5: and it's a huge problem for defenses to try to
- 47:54Speaker 5: match up with it. And now they have brock Perty
- 47:56Speaker 5: who's just kind of the perfect operator point guard for
- 47:59Speaker 5: this type of offense and it's extremely hard to stop.
- 48:03Speaker 1: Okay, a couple before we move on to the defensive
- 48:06Speaker 1: side the ball. A lot of fire Matt Canada stuff
- 48:09Speaker 1: out there. I know you follow all this stuff and
- 48:12Speaker 1: you're not looking to fire Matt Canada necessarily, But when
- 48:16Speaker 1: you see an offense that just can't get going like
- 48:18Speaker 1: his in Pittsburgh and then at the end Pickett does
- 48:20Speaker 1: figure it out, do you blame the offensive coordinator? What
- 48:23Speaker 1: do you see when you watch Pittsburgh's offense that is
- 48:25Speaker 1: just sputtering and yet still finding a way to get w's.
- 48:29Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 48:29Speaker 5: To me, that offense is one of the offenses in
- 48:32Speaker 5: the league that's underachieving. I feel like they should be
- 48:34Speaker 5: more productive with the talent they have on that offense.
- 48:39Speaker 5: And when I'm watching Matt Canada sometimes I do feel
- 48:42Speaker 5: like his game plans aren't tailored specificating enough against defenses
- 48:47Speaker 5: they're seeing. We're seeing too many of the same concepts
- 48:50Speaker 5: over and over again. Like a Week one when they're
- 48:53Speaker 5: going against the Nine Years, they run kind of this
- 48:55Speaker 5: old school shallow cross concept that Canny Pickett actually, you know,
- 49:00Speaker 5: really likes since college. And I understand that to put
- 49:03Speaker 5: in concepts that your quarterbacks. Like, but then when you're
- 49:05Speaker 5: running that against Fred Warner, which is you know, that's
- 49:09Speaker 5: the the mic linebackers who's designed to.
- 49:12Speaker 6: Stress, that's not a guy you want to be picking on.
- 49:15Speaker 5: And they ran eight times against the Niners, and each
- 49:17Speaker 5: time was a disastrous result.
- 49:19Speaker 1: So I like that result.
- 49:21Speaker 5: Yeah, Like I don't have the exact stats in front
- 49:24Speaker 5: of me, but the eight times they ran out, I
- 49:26Speaker 5: think they only completed once. He was sacked twice and
- 49:28Speaker 5: intercepted once and almost intercepted another time. So when you
- 49:32Speaker 5: see things like that, it's just, you know, it's hard
- 49:33Speaker 5: not to criticize the offensive coordinator. So yeah, I'm not
- 49:38Speaker 5: a huge fan of Matt Canada's offense.
- 49:41Speaker 1: Okay, So Matt Canada is down another offense that's being
- 49:45Speaker 1: questioned right now, and it's a lot of its skill
- 49:46Speaker 1: position as a team that we saw on Monday night
- 49:49Speaker 1: the Packers, they don't seem to be able to get
- 49:51Speaker 1: anything going either. Your thoughts on Green Bays offense and
- 49:54Speaker 1: is that a Matt Lafleur thing or is that just
- 49:55Speaker 1: there's not enough horses to go and do what they
- 49:58Speaker 1: gotta do.
- 49:58Speaker 5: Yeah, I'm a fan of Matt Lafleur's play calling and
- 50:01Speaker 5: play designs, and I think right now Jordan Love is
- 50:04Speaker 5: going through some growing pains. They have a lot of offensive
- 50:07Speaker 5: line issues with guys getting hurt and going in and
- 50:09Speaker 5: out of the lineup. And you know, Christiana Watson's just
- 50:13Speaker 5: coming back right now, but Jordan Love is, you know,
- 50:17Speaker 5: he's definitely growing through some growing pains.
- 50:18Speaker 6: He's missing guys, he's not seeing them.
- 50:21Speaker 5: Like that last play against the last interception against Raiders, Watson,
- 50:27Speaker 5: you know, he was laid on it. He tried to
- 50:29Speaker 5: scramble and then he tried to throw. Heave it up
- 50:31Speaker 5: and is underthrown. But that should have been a game
- 50:34Speaker 5: winning touchdown. So I don't blame before for the Packers
- 50:38Speaker 5: offensive struggles. I like him as a play designer, play caller,
- 50:42Speaker 5: but right now they're just going through some growing pains
- 50:44Speaker 5: with their quarterback and getting some guys back from injury.
- 50:47Speaker 1: My last one, you probably watched Sean Payton for twenty
- 50:50Speaker 1: years and marveled at what he was doing in New Orleans.
- 50:52Speaker 1: The offense hasn't been terrible in Denver, but it certainly
- 50:54Speaker 1: isn't a Sean Payton offense. Your thoughts on what's going
- 50:57Speaker 1: on up in Denver and Sean Payton and Russell Wilson.
- 51:00Speaker 2: Five weeks in.
- 51:01Speaker 5: I will say that Russell Wilson is playing a lot
- 51:04Speaker 5: better than I thought he would be just based on
- 51:07Speaker 5: watching him last year. So I think Peyton was brought
- 51:10Speaker 5: in to fix that offense, and I think he.
- 51:13Speaker 6: Has done that. That offense has fixed. I don't think.
- 51:16Speaker 5: I don't think we're gonna see Russell Wilson play to
- 51:18Speaker 5: the level that he did when he was in Seattle.
- 51:21Speaker 5: I think this is probably the best that they could
- 51:23Speaker 5: get out of him right now.
- 51:25Speaker 6: He's probably not.
- 51:25Speaker 5: Going to live up to that contract he has, but
- 51:28Speaker 5: the offense they've built around him works. It's just that
- 51:32Speaker 5: their defense went from a top ten unit last year
- 51:35Speaker 5: to by far the worst defense in the league this year,
- 51:38Speaker 5: and they're having to score, you know, thirty forty points
- 51:41Speaker 5: to keep up with the other teams. So offensively, Sean
- 51:45Speaker 5: Payton's done what he needs to do, but defensively is
- 51:48Speaker 5: just just a total mess right now.
- 51:54Speaker 2: All right, let's do some more picks here, all right.
- 51:56Speaker 1: So we talk about offense all the time, and that's
- 51:58Speaker 1: what pays the Bills. On Good Morning Football, NFL Network,
- 52:01Speaker 1: we're talking about the quarterbacks, but gosh, you do a
- 52:03Speaker 1: lot of good film breakdown on defense too. The most
- 52:06Speaker 1: un under appreciated defensive player in the NFL is who
- 52:10Speaker 1: Ted Win.
- 52:11Speaker 6: I have to say Max Crosby.
- 52:13Speaker 5: And I know Crosby had a big game on the
- 52:16Speaker 5: national stage last yesterday, so I think people appreciate him
- 52:19Speaker 5: a little bit more after that. But to me, Max
- 52:22Speaker 5: Crosby a guy that should be in a running for
- 52:24Speaker 5: Defensive Player a year. I believe he's second right now.
- 52:27Speaker 5: In pressures, he's one of the best run stopping defensive
- 52:32Speaker 5: ends in the league. I think that's one aspect of
- 52:33Speaker 5: his game that doesn't get talked about enough. He's able
- 52:36Speaker 5: to just recognize whatever plays offenses are running at him
- 52:40Speaker 5: because of his film study, and he's just relentless.
- 52:43Speaker 6: He has a motor.
- 52:44Speaker 5: So to me, you know, I think Crosby should be
- 52:48Speaker 5: a runner up in the Defensive Player of the Year race.
- 52:50Speaker 5: And that's why I want to bring his name up here.
- 52:52Speaker 1: It's great, you know, there's such a long list of
- 52:55Speaker 1: these guys. I'm gonna go with the guy who's local
- 52:56Speaker 1: in my backyard and he's getting a lot of love.
- 52:59Speaker 1: And Jeff Olbrich, the defensive coordinator, said he's the best
- 53:01Speaker 1: linebacker in football and Oldrick he's to coach Fred Warner.
- 53:04Speaker 1: Quincy Williams for the Jets is freaking awesome. Have you
- 53:07Speaker 1: had a chance to watch what Quincy's been doing on
- 53:08Speaker 1: a week to week basis?
- 53:10Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean he's you know, he's one of the
- 53:12Speaker 5: most physical linebackers in the league, and that's it's fun
- 53:15Speaker 5: to watch. You know, a lot of these guys are
- 53:16Speaker 5: coverage linebackers now, but but Quincy is the.
- 53:20Speaker 6: Guy that will blow up blocks and you know, a
- 53:22Speaker 6: hit guy. So that's a great pick.
- 53:25Speaker 1: Very rarely now, is it like there's a hot defensive coordinator.
- 53:28Speaker 1: We always have the hot offensive coordinator. Who's a hot
- 53:30Speaker 1: defensive coordinator or a defensive coordinator? You like watching game
- 53:33Speaker 1: tape from on Monday mornings.
- 53:36Speaker 6: That's a good question.
- 53:37Speaker 1: You know.
- 53:38Speaker 5: I think Patrick Graham is doing a pretty good job
- 53:40Speaker 5: with the Raiders right now that their defense has been
- 53:43Speaker 5: a lot better than people think. And we saw that
- 53:46Speaker 5: against Green Bay last night. And there's not a ton
- 53:48Speaker 5: of talent on the Raiders roster, so he's a good one.
- 53:53Speaker 5: Brian Flores, you know, the Vikings defense is not great
- 53:57Speaker 5: right now, and their roster is obviously very thin. But
- 54:02Speaker 5: I just love watching Brian Flores's defenses because he's so
- 54:04Speaker 5: aggressive and it's such a different field than what a
- 54:09Speaker 5: lot of these other defenses are doing, which is kind
- 54:11Speaker 5: of sitting back in zone trying to stop explosive plays. So,
- 54:14Speaker 5: you know, I want to see what Brian Flores could
- 54:17Speaker 5: do with a little bit more talent, but it's fun
- 54:19Speaker 5: to watch how aggressive that defense is.
- 54:21Speaker 1: I always enjoy watching Rahie Morris's Rams play because they're
- 54:24Speaker 1: so young, and you're getting stuff from guys like Russ
- 54:28Speaker 1: Yeas and Kobe.
- 54:29Speaker 2: Durant and Brian Young.
- 54:31Speaker 1: And you said you did the article with Jordan about
- 54:34Speaker 1: the Rams offense. I think the Rams defense is fascinating
- 54:36Speaker 1: because they lost a slew of talent and yet they
- 54:40Speaker 1: still hold opponents under thirty points. I think Rahie Morris
- 54:43Speaker 1: deserves a lot of credit.
- 54:45Speaker 6: No, I definitely agree with you.
- 54:46Speaker 5: And you know they're doing it with two corners that
- 54:48Speaker 5: they picked up off the street, you know, with the
- 54:50Speaker 5: Kilo Witherspoon and Duke Shelley who got cut from the
- 54:53Speaker 5: Raiders before the season. So it's really hard to do,
- 54:58Speaker 5: you know, play defense without really great corners, and right
- 55:02Speaker 5: now the Rams are doing it, so yeah, I think
- 55:05Speaker 5: Moore should get a ton of it as well.
- 55:07Speaker 1: All Right, a couple more questions that we could do
- 55:09Speaker 1: a little draft picks for it, and then we'll let
- 55:11Speaker 1: you go.
- 55:11Speaker 2: Ted.
- 55:12Speaker 1: As far as playmakers go, you mentioned McCaffrey. Who's your
- 55:15Speaker 1: favorite guy to watch? Who's the favorite the most dynamic guy,
- 55:18Speaker 1: And then if you were building an offense, it's say,
- 55:19Speaker 1: get me that guy. We can go to work with
- 55:21Speaker 1: that guy who's the offensive playmaker non quarterback that you cherish,
- 55:26Speaker 1: and that maybe on Monday mornings you quickly go and
- 55:28Speaker 1: look and see what he did.
- 55:30Speaker 5: You know, I think Justin Jefferson is one of my
- 55:33Speaker 5: favorite guys to watch, just his you know, like when
- 55:36Speaker 5: you look at receivers.
- 55:37Speaker 6: I like watching receivers.
- 55:39Speaker 5: That have the sceptive body language, so you know, their
- 55:42Speaker 5: their body is telling you they're going to run one way,
- 55:44Speaker 5: but then they break the other way. And Justin Jefferson
- 55:47Speaker 5: is just a master at doing that, and he's so
- 55:49Speaker 5: creative with his route running. He's a really fun guy
- 55:53Speaker 5: to watch and he's just you know, it always seems
- 55:55Speaker 5: like he's beating double teams. And he's getting you know,
- 55:59Speaker 5: twenty yard chunks at a time in an offense where
- 56:03Speaker 5: you know there's not a ton of talent around him
- 56:05Speaker 5: and guys, you know, defenses are able to double team him,
- 56:08Speaker 5: but he still finds a way to make plays I find.
- 56:10Speaker 1: I mean, I know I mentioned him ten times. I
- 56:12Speaker 1: like Deebo still, like I love watching Deebo film because
- 56:16Speaker 1: he plays so angry and he plays so physically for
- 56:21Speaker 1: a receiver, and then they put him at running back
- 56:23Speaker 1: and I just feel like, as much as we talk
- 56:24Speaker 1: about positionless players and Jamier Gibbs is going to be
- 56:27Speaker 1: that and you know McCaffrey does this and that, Like,
- 56:29Speaker 1: I still feel like Debo's one of one when it
- 56:31Speaker 1: comes to oh wait circle nineteen, he's going to do
- 56:34Speaker 1: something crazy out there and oh he's going to also
- 56:36Speaker 1: lower his shoulder and do it to you.
- 56:38Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean, his highlight, it's like a watching a
- 56:40Speaker 5: high school high school highlight, you know, where he's just
- 56:42Speaker 5: like overpowering guys of the secondary, running through guys, spinning around.
- 56:47Speaker 5: And I've gotten to watch him, you know, I've had
- 56:49Speaker 5: an opportunity to watch him live a bunch of times.
- 56:51Speaker 5: Obviously with him being on a Niners and it's just
- 56:53Speaker 5: amazing to watch him run through secondary. He's like, he
- 56:56Speaker 5: breaks tackles better than a lot of running backs. So
- 57:00Speaker 5: I absolutely agree, he's a really fun to watch.
- 57:02Speaker 1: Okay, my last question, and this one always I have
- 57:04Speaker 1: to end on a sour note. The most frustrating offense
- 57:07Speaker 1: in the league the one where you put this film
- 57:09Speaker 1: on you like, I can't.
- 57:10Speaker 2: I just can't.
- 57:10Speaker 1: I can't watch all thirty eight snaps of the first
- 57:13Speaker 1: half from the Who's the most frustrating offense that you've
- 57:16Speaker 1: been watching twenty twenty three right now?
- 57:19Speaker 5: It's the Atlanta Falcons, And it's just because I had
- 57:22Speaker 5: such high expectations for them coming into the season. They
- 57:26Speaker 5: have all those high draft picks Drake London, Kyle Pitts,
- 57:29Speaker 5: b Jhon Robinson, and we know Arthur Smith is a
- 57:31Speaker 5: creative play caller, play designer. But the offense was sputtering
- 57:38Speaker 5: in the beginning of the season. And part of it
- 57:39Speaker 5: is they have some pass protection issues. Desmond Ritter needs development.
- 57:44Speaker 5: But you know, right now, their leading receiver is John
- 57:47Speaker 5: new Smith, you know, so we thought they were gonna
- 57:49Speaker 5: do a lot more with what they have. We thought
- 57:52Speaker 5: they were gonna use b Jon Robinson in a slot
- 57:54Speaker 5: like they were touting all off season. But I will
- 57:57Speaker 5: have to say I watched their game last week against
- 58:00Speaker 5: the Texans, and I was really impressed with Desmond Ritter.
- 58:03Speaker 6: I mean, you know, I did not expect him to
- 58:06Speaker 6: be really.
- 58:07Speaker 1: I know, he put up big numbers and had the
- 58:09Speaker 1: drive at the end, but you think he was good.
- 58:11Speaker 6: Yeah, No, he made some big boy throws downfield.
- 58:14Speaker 5: He was aggressive, he was accurate, and it was night
- 58:17Speaker 5: and day between the Desert Ritter we saw in the
- 58:20Speaker 5: beginning the season and this game. So it was a
- 58:23Speaker 5: type of game where I thought, you know, maybe he
- 58:26Speaker 5: might have.
- 58:26Speaker 6: Flipped the switch.
- 58:27Speaker 5: It wasn't just a game where he was getting lucky
- 58:30Speaker 5: wide open receivers. He was making some legitimate reads, legitimate
- 58:33Speaker 5: downfield throws. So hopefully they turned things around, but they
- 58:37Speaker 5: were one of the most frustrating offenses to watch.
- 58:40Speaker 1: I hate to pick on a team that's down, obviously,
- 58:42Speaker 1: and now it makes good fodder. But I tried watching
- 58:46Speaker 1: that Patriots Saints game back yesterday. I can't watch that
- 58:49Speaker 1: Patriots offense. And Bill O'Brien is a smart guy. Obviously,
- 58:52Speaker 1: he's got the credentials he knows how to run an offense, Like,
- 58:55Speaker 1: is that thing just da? Is that dead on arrival?
- 58:57Speaker 6: Yeah? I mean it's right now.
- 58:59Speaker 5: I think Mac Jones is playing some really bad football,
- 59:03Speaker 5: and I don't want to put it all on him,
- 59:05Speaker 5: but watching that Cowboys game, it just seemed like after
- 59:09Speaker 5: he had that fund that strip sack that went for
- 59:13Speaker 5: a touchdown, it completely changed his mindset. Like there was
- 59:16Speaker 5: times where he had clean pockets and he would try
- 59:18Speaker 5: to scramble out of it. There's time when he had
- 59:20Speaker 5: open receivers he would pass up on it. And there's
- 59:23Speaker 5: protection issues obviously at times, and they don't have a
- 59:26Speaker 5: lot of receiving talent. But it's just right now, it's
- 59:28Speaker 5: just a perfect storm of bad things happening with that
- 59:32Speaker 5: offense where it's like you said, I think it's worse
- 59:35Speaker 5: than the league right now.
- 59:36Speaker 1: Yeah, Forrey Rap, let's turn the page. I know you
- 59:40Speaker 1: do a lot of draft stuff too. Have you had
- 59:41Speaker 1: a chance to watch any of these college quarterbacks?
- 59:43Speaker 6: Yet?
- 59:44Speaker 5: I try not to pay too much attention to college
- 59:47Speaker 5: during the season because I need at least one day
- 59:49Speaker 5: I spend some time with my girlfriend and that day
- 59:52Speaker 5: is Saturday. But I do catch as much Caleb Williams
- 59:57Speaker 5: as I can. And one quarterback that I really like
- 1:00:00Speaker 5: watching is Michael PENNOCKX.
- 1:00:03Speaker 2: Yeah, up in Washington.
- 1:00:04Speaker 1: So talk about him because I feel like, right now
- 1:00:07Speaker 1: everyone's so zeroed in on Caleb in May, and yet
- 1:00:09Speaker 1: there's a bunch of football people in the league who
- 1:00:11Speaker 1: are like, why is no one talking about Penix? So
- 1:00:13Speaker 1: give us a little something on Penix up in Washington.
- 1:00:16Speaker 5: Yeah. So last year, early in the year, I had
- 1:00:18Speaker 5: no idea who Michael Pennix is was, but I caught
- 1:00:21Speaker 5: a Washington game I was.
- 1:00:22Speaker 6: Like, Wow, this guy is really aggressive. He's throwing downfield.
- 1:00:26Speaker 5: You know, his offense isn't just this little dink and
- 1:00:29Speaker 5: dunk bubble screen type of offense. He's running some concepts
- 1:00:32Speaker 5: that translate into the league. And this year he's kind
- 1:00:36Speaker 5: of you know, he has I think even a better
- 1:00:39Speaker 5: offense with two receivers that are going to go early
- 1:00:42Speaker 5: in the draft. He's aggressive. You see all the downfield throws,
- 1:00:46Speaker 5: and he has a kind of a funky throwing motion.
- 1:00:49Speaker 5: I kind of compare him to Philip Rivers you have
- 1:00:52Speaker 5: with a little shot put type of motion. Yeah, but
- 1:00:55Speaker 5: he's still really accurate and he has a really strong arm,
- 1:00:58Speaker 5: but I love how aggressive he is and how he's
- 1:01:01Speaker 5: always trying to attack defenses.
- 1:01:03Speaker 4: Ded.
- 1:01:04Speaker 2: This was awesome.
- 1:01:05Speaker 1: I really appreciate you waking up early, especially after a
- 1:01:07Speaker 1: Raiders game last night at Raiders win. Just for the
- 1:01:11Speaker 1: viewers and listeners at home. Where can we find your
- 1:01:13Speaker 1: stuff and give us kind of the beats of your
- 1:01:15Speaker 1: week where we know when we could check your feed,
- 1:01:17Speaker 1: you're gonna have the best stuff.
- 1:01:19Speaker 5: Yeah, So you can find me on Twitter at FB
- 1:01:21Speaker 5: Underscore film Analysis.
- 1:01:22Speaker 6: I'm always tweeting out clips throughout the week.
- 1:01:25Speaker 5: Tuesday, I have a column on the Athletic called Cover
- 1:01:28Speaker 5: seven when I cover coaching decisions I like or dislike.
- 1:01:31Speaker 5: Later in a week, I have a column about, you know,
- 1:01:34Speaker 5: a specific team focus that I found interesting. And I
- 1:01:38Speaker 5: have a YouTube channel with the same Twitter and Twitter name,
- 1:01:42Speaker 5: so you could check that out too.
- 1:01:43Speaker 1: Give me one example of a decision you didn't like
- 1:01:45Speaker 1: this week coaching decision.
- 1:01:48Speaker 5: Coaching decision I did not like was just the Eagles
- 1:01:53Speaker 5: overall red zone offense. I just think there's okay, yeah,
- 1:01:58Speaker 5: And part of it is they're missing the guy that
- 1:02:00Speaker 5: we're talking about, Sane Stiken, and they're just so dependent
- 1:02:04Speaker 5: on AJ Brown, you know, back shoulder fades, and they've
- 1:02:07Speaker 5: gotten kind of vanilla with their run game down there, so.
- 1:02:11Speaker 6: It's been a problem.
- 1:02:12Speaker 5: They dropped from third in the league in efficiency in
- 1:02:14Speaker 5: the red zone to twenty seven this year, and that's
- 1:02:18Speaker 5: through five games. So I think they need to get
- 1:02:21Speaker 5: more creative in the red zone, and that's that's something
- 1:02:23Speaker 5: to watch out for.
- 1:02:25Speaker 2: Bigger media is a question for you.
- 1:02:26Speaker 1: I'm sorry, I'm not letting you go because you're just
- 1:02:28Speaker 1: you're really good, and you're spitting out all these stats
- 1:02:30Speaker 1: and you got all this information.
- 1:02:33Speaker 2: Do you get frustrated?
- 1:02:34Speaker 1: I know, there's like it's easy to throw your you know,
- 1:02:36Speaker 1: do you get frustrated when you hear people talking about
- 1:02:38Speaker 1: football on TV who you know, haven't put the work
- 1:02:40Speaker 1: in or you know, don't watch these teams and are
- 1:02:42Speaker 1: just talking about them out of their ass? Uh?
- 1:02:45Speaker 6: Sometimes?
- 1:02:46Speaker 5: I mean, but I think getting into the media, I
- 1:02:49Speaker 5: realize how tough this job is now and how tough
- 1:02:53Speaker 5: it is to be on.
- 1:02:53Speaker 6: TV every day.
- 1:02:55Speaker 5: But yeah, once in a while, you hear like a
- 1:02:57Speaker 5: take that like does not make sense at all, Like
- 1:03:01Speaker 5: Leo last week. I almost say the name, but I
- 1:03:03Speaker 5: heard somebody talking about Mike B Daniels all offenses what
- 1:03:07Speaker 5: like not as not.
- 1:03:09Speaker 6: Being a creative one.
- 1:03:09Speaker 5: But I was like, dude, everybody is copying this offense
- 1:03:12Speaker 5: around the league right now.
- 1:03:13Speaker 2: It's copying it. Everyone's trying so hard. Yeah, totally.
- 1:03:16Speaker 5: Yeah, But I do understand it is tough being on
- 1:03:19Speaker 5: TV every single day. I mean, it's tough doing a
- 1:03:21Speaker 5: weekly podcast, you know, so you know, I understand there's
- 1:03:25Speaker 5: not enough time for everyone to watch every single game
- 1:03:28Speaker 5: like me. But yeah, I mean, if you're gonna have
- 1:03:30Speaker 5: a hot take, make sure you research it.
- 1:03:32Speaker 2: That's exactly right.
- 1:03:33Speaker 1: No one's asking you to know every team, but if
- 1:03:35Speaker 1: you are asked about a team and you've prepared for it,
- 1:03:37Speaker 1: you should probably know what you're talking about. Ted, you
- 1:03:40Speaker 1: know what you're talking about. Everybody, go check out Ted.
- 1:03:42Speaker 1: Thanks for joining the season with Peter schager Man. I
- 1:03:44Speaker 1: really appreciated it.
- 1:03:45Speaker 6: Yeah, no problem, Thanks for having me on.
- 1:03:47Speaker 1: Ted Win aaron high school football player turned college student
- 1:03:54Speaker 1: who at the same time is coaching football, then starts blogging,
- 1:03:57Speaker 1: and now is one of the leaders in the space.
- 1:03:59Speaker 4: Pretty cool story, right, Yeah, I and I love some
- 1:04:04Speaker 4: of his writing. I think when you let us know
- 1:04:06Speaker 4: that he was going to be the guest this week.
- 1:04:08Speaker 4: I was geeking out because he has an article if
- 1:04:10Speaker 4: anyone is looking for something to read from Ted. He
- 1:04:12Speaker 4: obviously writes things multiple times a week, but back almost
- 1:04:16Speaker 4: four years ago to the day, back in October of
- 1:04:18Speaker 4: twenty nineteen, he published an article called how to watch
- 1:04:21Speaker 4: Football like an Expert from the comfort of your couch,
- 1:04:24Speaker 4: and he talks about it in the interview where he
- 1:04:27Speaker 4: was explaining this to fifteen year old freshman, like how
- 1:04:29Speaker 4: to block on the line, and he breaks down passing concepts,
- 1:04:34Speaker 4: defensive looks, you know, what's the difference between a bubble
- 1:04:38Speaker 4: screen and an RPO? And he has he explains it
- 1:04:42Speaker 4: so well. These are things I didn't necessarily understand when
- 1:04:45Speaker 4: I first found the article, and I go back to
- 1:04:47Speaker 4: it every year to just be like, oh yeah, let
- 1:04:49Speaker 4: me just like remind myself all these terms. Love that article,
- 1:04:53Speaker 4: Love Ted, And it was really cool to hear to
- 1:04:56Speaker 4: hear him talk about the Colts.
- 1:04:58Speaker 3: Offenses being great. I know, I love that. Yeah, he
- 1:05:01Speaker 3: was great.
- 1:05:02Speaker 1: And it's also just a story for those listeners out
- 1:05:04Speaker 1: there who are like, I'd love to get in your business,
- 1:05:07Speaker 1: and I'd love to do it, but it's just too
- 1:05:09Speaker 1: many barriers for entry and there's no way like a
- 1:05:11Speaker 1: guy from the athletics all his stuff and.
- 1:05:13Speaker 2: Found him and there you go.
- 1:05:15Speaker 1: Now he's a writer on the Athletic and he's going
- 1:05:16Speaker 1: to have a promising future beyond that, this week's pod
- 1:05:20Speaker 1: was a blast to do. It's always a blast to
- 1:05:22Speaker 1: do with you, Erin and of course Jason English here
- 1:05:24Speaker 1: from the iHeart team, and quick thanks to all the listeners.
- 1:05:28Speaker 1: Last week's Jason Light podcast when absolutely bonkers.
- 1:05:31Speaker 2: And whether it was.
- 1:05:33Speaker 1: Pat McAfee talking about on his show or it getting
- 1:05:36Speaker 1: to Baker himself and him commenting on it, that's the
- 1:05:38Speaker 1: stuff we're looking forward, Trying to have some moments, trying
- 1:05:40Speaker 1: to make you smarter, trying to give you access to
- 1:05:42Speaker 1: guests that you wouldn't have otherwise. This is a joy
- 1:05:47Speaker 1: and I love working with both of you guys on
- 1:05:49Speaker 1: it here that are in studio with me. With that said,
- 1:05:53Speaker 1: I have to give a little Uber Eats promotion because
- 1:05:56Speaker 1: guess what Uber eats is now on board.
- 1:05:59Speaker 2: They're riding with us. How funny is that?
- 1:06:00Speaker 1: Pun the season with Peter Schrager delivering results presented by
- 1:06:04Speaker 1: Uber Eats, It's time for to live Results presented by Ubreeds.
- 1:06:08Speaker 1: I'm going to discuss a team or a player that
- 1:06:11Speaker 1: delivered from this past week's games, and I do it
- 1:06:15Speaker 1: with a heavy heart because he's now injured. But I
- 1:06:18Speaker 1: loved watching Devon Chan of the Miami Dolphins yet again
- 1:06:24Speaker 1: put on an absolute show.
- 1:06:28Speaker 2: The fastest dude in the league.
- 1:06:30Speaker 1: If not Tyreek Hill, it's him, and watching them against
- 1:06:34Speaker 1: the Giants, it felt like he was playing at a
- 1:06:35Speaker 1: different speed.
- 1:06:36Speaker 2: A rookie who is now second in.
- 1:06:38Speaker 1: The league in rushing yards at four hundred and sixty
- 1:06:41Speaker 1: on the year, and this is a guy who I
- 1:06:43Speaker 1: don't think anyone expected.
- 1:06:45Speaker 2: To make the immediate impact he did.
- 1:06:47Speaker 1: I go out with a get well soon as we
- 1:06:50Speaker 1: know he's going to be missing a couple of weeks.
- 1:06:51Speaker 1: Got injured at the end of that game, but gosh,
- 1:06:54Speaker 1: what a lightning rod and he could be the true
- 1:06:55Speaker 1: difference maker come December and January. For this Miami Dolphins offense,
- 1:06:59Speaker 1: the last thing they needed was more speed. They got
- 1:07:02Speaker 1: it in this young man, and the rookie is healing
- 1:07:04Speaker 1: up right now, but he is the annaw World. The
- 1:07:06Speaker 1: first winner of the Delivering Results presented by Uber Eats
- 1:07:11Speaker 1: on this podcast and we will do it weekly through
- 1:07:13Speaker 1: the regular season. We may axtend it through the postseason.
- 1:07:15Speaker 1: We'll see, and the days might change depending on how
- 1:07:17Speaker 1: it all goes. But Uber Eats is a new partner
- 1:07:20Speaker 1: and we're excited to have them and Devon Chen. Hopefully
- 1:07:23Speaker 1: you can go get some food using your deliverer, Uber Eats,
- 1:07:26Speaker 1: and you can tell them I was the dude who
- 1:07:28Speaker 1: won the award on the Season with Peter Schrager.
- 1:07:30Speaker 4: The good thing is, even if he's injured, he doesn't
- 1:07:32Speaker 4: have to go anywhere.
- 1:07:33Speaker 3: Ubert it to him.
- 1:07:35Speaker 2: He's got it and give five stars the whole deal.
- 1:07:39Speaker 2: There you go.
- 1:07:39Speaker 1: That was delivering results presented by Uber Eats, where you
- 1:07:41Speaker 1: can get almost almost anything. It's the official on demand
