- 0:22Thanks for listening. The Scripture this evening comes
- 0:28to us from the Gospel of John chapter 13, starting in verse
- 0:33one. It was just before the Passover
- 0:36festival. Jesus knew that the hour had
- 0:39come for him to leave this world and go to the Father.
- 0:44Having loved His own who were in the world, He loved them to the
- 0:48end. The evening meal was in progress
- 0:51and the devil had already prompted Judas, the son of Simon
- 0:55Iscariot, to betray Jesus. Jesus knew that the Father had
- 0:59put all things under his power and that he had come from God
- 1:03and was returning to God. So he got up from the meal, took
- 1:08off his outer clothing and wrapped a towel around his
- 1:11waist. After that he poured water into
- 1:14a basin and began to wash his disciples feet, drying them with
- 1:18the towel that was wrapped around him.
- 1:21He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, Lord, are you going to
- 1:25wash my feet? Jesus replied, You do not
- 1:29realize now what I am doing, but later you will understand.
- 1:33No, said Peter, you shall never wash my feet.
- 1:37Jesus answered, Unless I wash you, you have no part with me.
- 1:43Then Lord Simon Peter replied, Not just my feet, but my hands
- 1:48and my head as well. Jesus answered, Those who have
- 1:52had a bath need only to wash their feet.
- 1:55Their whole body is clean and you are clean, though not
- 1:59everyone of you. For he knew who was going to
- 2:02betray him, and that was why he said not everyone was clean.
- 2:07When he had finished washing their feet, he put on his
- 2:09clothes and returned to his place.
- 2:12Do you understand what I have done for you?
- 2:14He asked them, You call me Teacher and Lord, and rightly
- 2:19so, for that is what I am. Now that I, your Lord and
- 2:24Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one
- 2:28another's feet. I have set you an example that
- 2:32you should do as I have done for you.
- 2:34Very truly, I tell you, no servant is greater than his
- 2:38master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent
- 2:42him. Now that you know these things,
- 2:46you will be blessed if you do them.
- 2:48This is the word of God for the people of God.
- 2:51Thanks be to God. Amen.
- 2:56Amen. Well, if you didn't notice,
- 2:58Aaron and I don't usually sing those kind of songs together,
- 3:03but it's I'm so grateful for him and his willingness.
- 3:06He rearranged some things to be here and play tonight because
- 3:10Will and his family had a little travel difficulties where they
- 3:16were supposed to fly down to Florida with Aria on Sunday and
- 3:20their flight got cancelled. So they ended up driving and
- 3:24they are driving back even now to be here for the rest of of
- 3:30this weekend. And anyway, grateful for Aaron
- 3:35and his willingness to jump in. All right, I remember the first
- 3:45time I read this story about Jesus washing his disciples feet
- 3:53in the Jesus Storybook Bible. It has quite a graphic
- 3:59description of 1st century roads and the feet that walked on
- 4:04them. And let me just read it for you
- 4:07for a moment, OK? It says it was the Passover, the
- 4:11time when God's people remembered how God had rescued
- 4:16them from being slaves in Egypt. Every year they killed a lamb
- 4:19and ate it. The lamb died instead of us,
- 4:22they would say. But this Passover, God was
- 4:25getting ready for an even greater rescue.
- 4:28Jesus and his friends were having the Passover meal
- 4:31together in the upstairs room. But Jesus's friends were
- 4:35arguing. What about?
- 4:38They were arguing about stinky feet.
- 4:42Stinky feet, Yes, that's right, stinky feet.
- 4:46Now, the thing about feet back then was that people didn't wear
- 4:50shoes. They really only wore sandals,
- 4:53which might not sound unusual, except that the streets in those
- 4:57days were dirty. And I don't mean just dusty
- 5:01dirty, I mean really stinky dirty, with all those cows and
- 5:05horses everywhere. You can imagine the stuff on the
- 5:09street that ended up on their feet.
- 5:13So anyway, someone had to wash away the dirt.
- 5:16But it was a dreadful job. Who on earth would ever dream of
- 5:21volunteering to do it? Only the lowliest servant.
- 5:27Sounds lovely, doesn't it? You know, I don't think I really
- 5:32understood the depth of what Jesus did that night there in
- 5:40the upper room for his disciples until we lived in Uganda, which
- 5:48at times was quite similar. I got to experience for myself
- 5:51what it was like to to walk on those dusty streets to to get
- 5:56into town from our house. If we didn't drive, you had to
- 6:00walk on roads that were either dry and dusty or wet and muddy.
- 6:06The same roads you would regularly see people driving
- 6:09herds of cows, you know, right through the middle of town.
- 6:13Or they'd be leading a whole little group of goats or, or
- 6:16stray dogs were just wandering about seeing what they could get
- 6:20into. So you can imagine, right, what
- 6:22ended up on the streets. It was, you know, not even an
- 6:26uncommon sight to see someone just standing on the side of the
- 6:29road urinating. You know, sorry to be so graphic
- 6:32in the middle of a worship service, but but it helps you
- 6:35understand a little bit of what was happening today, living in
- 6:41in New Jersey, like most of us do, we live in a pretty
- 6:45sanitized world, right? It's far from the realities of,
- 6:50of, of foot traffic in an agrarian culture.
- 6:53There are no animals in the streets, although the geese in
- 6:57the area might give you some idea of what it was like if you
- 7:01tried walking around one of the lakes here.
- 7:06And generally speaking, if we're going to be walking about,
- 7:09we'll, we'll put on socks and shoes.
- 7:11Unless we're Jeremy, you might have a home where your custom is
- 7:19to take off your shoes when you enter into the house.
- 7:23But generally that's more of a preference thing, right than a
- 7:26necessity based on the realities, the daily realities
- 7:29of, of what you've just walked through or what your guests have
- 7:32just walked through to get to your house.
- 7:34The The thing is though, even today, we still need our feet
- 7:42washed, at least metaphorically speaking, right?
- 7:47Because of the the daily stuff of life that accumulates on us,
- 7:52because we live in a world saturated with sin, right?
- 7:58The sin we do, the sin that's done to us, the sin that's done
- 8:06in the world all around us. Now, if we've turned to Jesus
- 8:12for healing and forgiveness, we don't need to take a whole bath
- 8:16again, right? That's, that's what Jesus told
- 8:19Peter after Peter tried to to keep Jesus from washing his feet
- 8:24and then swung completely in the opposite direction, telling
- 8:29Jesus that if he's going to wash his feet, he might as well wash
- 8:31his hands and his head as well. I don't know if you know any
- 8:35people like Peter who swing from zero to 60 all in a moment, but
- 8:44we do need our feet washed. We need that ongoing cleansing
- 8:51because we've not yet reached the new creation that Jesus
- 8:55promises, where there will be no more sin and no more enemy in
- 9:01the world will be aligned with the will of God.
- 9:06So the surprise shouldn't be that we need our feet washed,
- 9:11right? That seems pretty apparent.
- 9:13You don't have to live long in the world to recognize that the
- 9:19the surprise is who Stoops down to do the washing, right?
- 9:27Like the story told us, this was a task that was usually reserved
- 9:31for the lowliest of servants. Absent a servant, maybe the
- 9:36youngest in the group, no one was fighting for the opportunity
- 9:41to be the foot washer. Remember what we said was on
- 9:47those feet? But then there's Jesus, the
- 9:55rabbi, the teacher, the leader of the crew, the one everyone
- 10:00else was following. He's the one who picks up the
- 10:06towel and the basin and the pitcher of water.
- 10:09He's the one who kneels down in front of each of his
- 10:14apprentices. He's the one washing away the
- 10:18dirt and the grime and the filth.
- 10:24And he did it not because he had some supernatural gift of
- 10:30serving, but because he had chosen the way of self denial.
- 10:36He was modeling for us, for us all the way we are to live, the
- 10:43way we're to serve in the world. And he was showing us the kind
- 10:48of leadership that exists in the upside down Kingdom, which is
- 10:52the Kingdom of heaven. It looks like serving.
- 10:58So denying yourself, As we've been talking about all through
- 11:03our Lenten season this year, denying yourself also means
- 11:11denying the pride that would resist washing someone else's
- 11:17feet, the pride that would look for someone else to do the
- 11:24washing. The pride that would deny.
- 11:28Maybe we even need to be washed at all.
- 11:35And in place of that, denying it means choosing.
- 11:41Choosing the kind of humility that Jesus chose.
- 11:45The kind of humility that led Jesus into the very deepest
- 11:50pains of humanity. Because it's in his humility
- 11:57that Jesus took on our nature, and as he's experienced over the
- 12:03next 48 hours, the betrayal, torture, death, very deepest,
- 12:13darkest point of human experience.
- 12:20And because, as Jesus said, that the servant isn't greater than
- 12:25the master, the student isn't greater than her teacher, the
- 12:28messenger isn't greater than the one who sent him, we should
- 12:34expect nothing different. Jesus, our Master and Teacher
- 12:42and Lord, he Stoops tonight to wash your feet not with water
- 12:51and basin and towel. He Stoops to wash the feet of
- 12:58your soul with his body and his blood, which he gave freely for
- 13:06you and for me. And he invites us to follow His
- 13:13example, to make his way of life, His humility, our way of
- 13:22life, to make a practice of serving our brothers and
- 13:27sisters, those who deserve it and and those who we may think
- 13:33maybe don't deserve it. He invites us to take the low
- 13:39sea like we talked about on Sunday, so that we don't have to
- 13:44be humbled. Jesus calls you to deny
- 13:52yourself, along with your pride, your ego, your dignity and
- 13:58honor. He calls you to get your hands
- 14:05dirty, washing the feet of the world, knowing that He can wash
- 14:15those hands too. Would you pray with me tonight?
- 14:26Jesus, we, we thank you and we're amazed that you being not
- 14:40just the the teacher, not just the leader of the group, but the
- 14:46very God of gods, the King of Kings, the Lord of Lords would
- 14:53stoop to wash the feet of your disciples, that you would stoop
- 14:59to wash even the feet of our souls.
- 15:08So Jesus, we want to submit to that washing tonight,
- 15:15recognizing that there are things we've done and things
- 15:19that have happened to us and around us that have gotten our
- 15:24feet a bit dirty. You know those things and you're
- 15:29not afraid of them. Would you come and wash us
- 15:36tonight? Would you come and and meet us
- 15:41in the midst of the dirt and the muck and the bill?
- 15:49Would you apply your blood there to our hearts, right where we
- 15:56need to be cleaned? We ask.
- 16:00This thesis in your name.
