- 0:05Speaker 1: Welcome back to the Craig Way Show and the Voice
- 0:08of the Longhorns.
- 0:09Speaker 2: Craig Way.
- 0:10Speaker 1: Follow Craig on social media at Horn Voice.
- 0:16Speaker 2: You probably noticed that we weren't rolling.
- 0:19Speaker 1: Back with yacht Rock today, which we normally do on Wednesdays,
- 0:23but we had so much going on today on the
- 0:25Texas o U week, we decided just to step back
- 0:28and step away from the yacht rock for one week.
- 0:30But it'll be back. I promise we'll roll it back
- 0:34in for all of the reasons. Because Cameron Parker misses
- 0:36the yacht rock, right you becoming.
- 0:40Speaker 2: We'll bring it back. Oh yeah, for sure, Yeah for sure.
- 0:43Speaker 1: All right, let's hear a little more from Longhorn's head coach,
- 0:46Steve Sarkisian. This is from the SEC teleconference. This this
- 0:50next answer to a question is a question that in
- 0:55the inverse was kind of directed at Lynn Venables minimals.
- 1:01Excuse me, Brent Mivinnibles, the head coach of the Oklahoma Sooners,
- 1:05because I was perusing and watching all of that the
- 1:09news conference.
- 1:10Speaker 2: This is.
- 1:12Speaker 1: A question about matching up mentally in the chess match
- 1:17with Brent Vinnibles, the Oklahoma Sooners head coach.
- 1:20Speaker 2: A ton of respect for coach Venibles.
- 1:22Speaker 3: He's been a great defensive coach for a long long time,
- 1:26multiple stops. His defense definitely has a lot of personality
- 1:32to it. You know, there's a lot of defense. They
- 1:34play hard, they they play with amazing effort. You know,
- 1:38they're they're very opportunistic. They create turnovers, and that's everywhere
- 1:41he's been in this Oklahoma defense is no different. You know,
- 1:44I think they're one of the leaders in the countries
- 1:46in the country in sacks. Uh, they're one of the
- 1:48leaders in turnover and turnover margin, and they you know,
- 1:52they can create a lot of havoc and I think
- 1:54that all is a byproduct of his style of defense
- 1:57and the way he calls it to barry gress in
- 2:00nature and creates a lot of challenges.
- 2:04Speaker 1: There was a similar type question posed to Brnt Venables,
- 2:08but it was more along the lines, well, I mean,
- 2:10it was kind of like that, but it was really
- 2:13kind of directed into the whole element of a chess match,
- 2:19Venables being the defensive guru against Sark the offensive specialists,
- 2:25and it was kind of the direction a little bit
- 2:27about that. He talked about Brent Vinibles defense Venibles when
- 2:30he was asked about it. So I never really don't
- 2:31look at it that way, you know, he said, he
- 2:34I don't look at it as a chess match of
- 2:37how I do my defense act on how he does
- 2:39his offense with this and this, and he went on
- 2:41into some other reasons as well. But folks are going
- 2:43to go there naturally, because that was truly Brent Venables
- 2:49area of concentration. What he built his reputation on is
- 2:51being an outstanding defensive coach.
- 2:53Speaker 2: And we all know what the reputation.
- 2:55Speaker 1: Is for sarka as an offensive play caller and an
- 2:58offensive mastermind of when it comes to college football. So
- 3:01that's going to be a natural comparison and conversation that
- 3:05folks have on them.
- 3:07Speaker 2: That the other thing, when you flip it the other.
- 3:09Speaker 1: Way and you talk about the Texas defense against the
- 3:16Oklahoma offense, this is when you think about it. It is
- 3:20kind of a unique question put to Sark about his
- 3:24defense gearing up for Michael Hawkins junior, the freshman from
- 3:28Frisco Emerson. How Hawkins is, now in Sark's fourth season
- 3:36at the Helm as head coach for Texas, is going
- 3:41to face his fourth different starting quarterback for Oklahoma.
- 3:49Speaker 2: I have not enjoyed. I think you said it.
- 3:56Speaker 3: I think that's the norm, you know, in this day
- 3:59and age of you know, just the reality of that position,
- 4:03the reality of the climate of college football right now.
- 4:09You know, it's more about the scheme and then and
- 4:12then getting the feel for the quarterback within from year
- 4:15to year. I mean, even that the scheme has changed some.
- 4:17You know, they obviously lost their offensive coordinator. Coach Levy
- 4:19is now Mississippi State too, so you know, have the
- 4:22set there last year as an analyst I think has
- 4:25helped them. But that's what I was saying about us
- 4:29this year, We're we're really the anomaly. Having a third
- 4:31year starting quarterback in Quinn is probably more of the
- 4:34anomaly than you know, the turnover at the quarterback quarterback
- 4:38position that a lot of people have.
- 4:40Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 4:40Speaker 1: Interesting, He mentioned Seth Latrell, who had been an analyst
- 4:43there at OU. After Seth Latrell been at North Texas
- 4:47I think seven years and took him to a couple
- 4:49of bowl games before he was fired from North Texas
- 4:52and he signed on with Oklomb. Of course, Latrell played
- 4:55at Ou in the nineties to early two thousands, and
- 4:58then he was an analyst. Now now he's the offensive
- 5:03coordinator and quarterbacks coach for Brent Vinnable's there, and then
- 5:06something off the grid. As always, always, always, the question
- 5:10is going to come up. And when you're on an
- 5:12SEC teleconference, and I've mentioned this before and I'll continue
- 5:18to mention this, you are fielding questions if you're a
- 5:22head coach on this conference call, because every all sixteen
- 5:26head coach has participated. It starts like at ten in
- 5:28the morning, goes to at like one o'clock in the afternoon,
- 5:30and there's like between five and ten minutes for each coach,
- 5:35and there are writers, broadcasters, bloggers, fan site writers and
- 5:42reporters of various sorts who are all on this conference call,
- 5:48on this teleconference, and you're invariably going to get questions
- 5:54from reporters from different parts of the country, in other words,
- 5:58not from the state of Texas, from Florida or South
- 6:01Carolina or Kentucky or Georgia, and they'll l ask a
- 6:04question that folks down in these parts very well know
- 6:09you know how Sart's going to answer it or whatever.
- 6:12Speaker 2: Then you get questions like this, and.
- 6:14Speaker 1: It can only come really and truly from one of
- 6:16two places, Texas or Oklahoma, and the question is has
- 6:23he ever had a Fletcher's corny Dog or any other
- 6:28state fair food. That question was put to Sarks, so
- 6:31you know it had to be a reporter's question coming
- 6:34from either inside the boundaries of the state of Texas
- 6:37or Oklahoma.
- 6:38Speaker 3: I have not enjoyed I think you said, a corny dog,
- 6:43and have not had a chance to really to partake
- 6:46in the state Fair. But I know it's a great time.
- 6:50I know our fans really enjoy it. It's always fun
- 6:53when we show up to the stadium. We kind of
- 6:55drive through the fair and see the fans from both
- 6:58Texas and OU and the that they have in both programs.
- 7:02Very unique setting for a football game, and I think
- 7:05that's what makes this game so special, is just that
- 7:09it being at the Fair and there's almost as many
- 7:11people outside the stadium, or more people outside of the
- 7:13stadium there are inside the stadium. The fans getting split
- 7:16right there at the fifty ton of energy in the stadium.
- 7:20Speaker 2: So it's fun.
- 7:23Speaker 3: You know, maybe if we win, I'll try to find
- 7:24a corny dog or something.
- 7:28Speaker 1: Sarta does not remember this apparently from his answer there,
- 7:33but I'm going to remind him of this this evening
- 7:36when we're recording Walghorn Weekly over at Pluckers the West
- 7:40Campus location. Yes, it is Wednesday, so we're back to
- 7:43having Coach Sark back on.
- 7:44Speaker 2: We didn't.
- 7:44Speaker 1: We took a week off during the bye week, but
- 7:47we're back and we normally record the program from six
- 7:50until seven. I think we're going to start a few
- 7:52minutes earlier tonight so that Sark and the team can
- 7:58get over to the Ut Tower for the Texas Fight Rally,
- 8:03because that actually starts at six point thirty with students
- 8:06gathering and all that sort of stuff, But the program
- 8:09itself starts at seven, So we're going to begin our
- 8:12recording of the show a few minutes prior to seven
- 8:17o'clock to six o'clock so that he can be done
- 8:20a few minutes prior to seven and get over there
- 8:22with the team for the Texas Fight Rally. Here's where
- 8:25I'm going with this. Two years ago, the question was
- 8:29brought up to Sark about all the deep fried foods
- 8:32and things like that. If you're going to ask Sark
- 8:36about a deep fried food at the State Fair, don't
- 8:38go coin dog, don't go turkey leg don't go any
- 8:42of that stuff.
- 8:42Speaker 2: Sark has a sweet tooth.
- 8:44Speaker 1: It's all about the desserts, and he said there might
- 8:47be something there, and I rattled off the list. I'm
- 8:49going to do it again tonight, the recording some of
- 8:52those desserts because you uncovered a few other ones, didn't
- 8:55you camp Yeah, well extra ones. All right, we'll go
- 8:58over some of those in four o'clock hour. But he said,
- 9:02if we win, then I might go. Well, that was
- 9:04forty nine nothing two years ago. So somebody went out
- 9:09and brought him like I think it was the thing.
- 9:11I had the bisco offer something in the bowl and
- 9:14chocolate and all this other kind of stuff, and he
- 9:17loved it. So I'll remind him of that as Hey,
- 9:20the last time you did that, you had just won
- 9:22forty nine nothing.
- 9:23Speaker 2: So we'll see.
- 9:24Speaker 1: All right, we'll be back and wrap up our number
- 9:25two on sports Radio AM thirteen Hunderd The Zone
