- 2:24now. Today's episode is going to be something long, yeah, because today
- 2:34Devin will be talking about American gods. Bye, Neil Gamen, Gaemon Gamon.
- 2:45I'm looking at Do I pronounce it A like an ear and A like
- 2:47an a is? How do you spell it the A? I am a
- 2:53N but it's pronounced the g e I Gamen Demen, dimon, diamond,
- 3:01diamond. I think Neil Gamen Gamen, Neil Gamen. Yeah, Neil Gaman
- 3:10wrote American gods as well as other works like I mean, he did the
- 3:17Sandman series. He's done novels and stuff in the com book world, but
- 3:25he's most notable for like American Gods, The Sandman, Stardust, Good Omens,
- 3:32the Graveyard Book. He's also done film stuff. Uh, he's been
- 3:42he's been on. Uh. He was the voice of the Crow in the
- 3:46Sandman show. I didn't know that, but apparently he was the crow.
- 3:51Okay, Uh, yeah, he's he's he's he's all over the place in
- 3:55the entertainment world as far as books, common stars in some movies, theater,
- 4:01screenplays. He is born in England. He's English British. Do you
- 4:12know how they beat he's been I mean, he's been doing this stuff since
- 4:17nineteen eighty four, so he's been the business for quite some time. I
- 4:23think Sam some of his more popular works came out from the nineties early two
- 4:28thousands, and then it's just now getting popular because they've gotten screen adaptations like
- 4:36American Gods and the Sandman series, because those Sandman series is from the nineties,
- 4:44was from like eighty ninety to ninety six, and American Guys that were
- 4:46taught that I'm talking about today was released on actually June nineteenth, twenty not
- 4:55twenty twenty one. Oh my god, two thousand and one, so a
- 5:00long time ago. He uh, twenty three years ago, jesus. It's
- 5:11a fantasy novel Ovvy and it takes place, well that takes place, I
- 5:15mean it takes place in the United States, in America. This book blends
- 5:20Americana fantasy as well as like modern takes a mythology and old and like the
- 5:27a decent old mythology. It's all mixed in a little melting pot. Now,
- 5:30the cool thing about this book is uh Neil decided to go on a
- 5:35road trip when he was writing this book. All the locations that are talked
- 5:42about in the book he has actually been to because he purposely wanted to use
- 5:47real locations in the United States that he that he would they personally have been
- 5:54to for these for the locations for this book, as far as like the
- 5:59Landmark. So he went all the way from like Rock City, Tennessee,
- 6:03all the way over to like I'm trying to thak the other locations in this
- 6:09book, to the far West. And so he's been all over the place
- 6:15once large huge road trip getting locations down for this lovely book that got also
- 6:23adapted into a TV series. For seasons, we were unable to watch the
- 6:30show because where is it on Stars right now? Or is on Stars now?
- 6:35I was able to watch. I watched the first two seasons, and
- 6:39I was able to watch the part of the third because my friend bought those
- 6:45seasons on his voodoo so I was watching a little bit of it. But
- 6:48let me tell you, the material really heavily differs from the book, which
- 6:54I will probably just sprinkle in throughout the story. As I talked about it,
- 6:59because there's a lot of big diferences between this the TV series and the
- 7:08UH case. So going into chapter one, we're going in chapters to day.
- 7:16This thing has twenty chapters. It is in total page wise, this
- 7:21book is probable. Well it's actually it's four hundred and sixty five pages.
- 7:29Okay, So this book is going to be following the character known as Shadow,
- 7:35who is a ex convict and who is released three days early when the
- 7:42story begins, when he gets released from said prison because he was in prison
- 7:53for a theft gone wrong. He committed a crime of theft and he's the
- 8:01only one that got caught amongst him. Yeah, he spent last three years
- 8:05in prison and he finds of course, he gets out three days early.
- 8:09But like when he's in prison, he finds it relieving to be there.
- 8:13He feels free, and he's kind of just he's vibing, like he's enjoying
- 8:18his time in prison. He has to worry about the outside world or anything.
- 8:22And he's kind of just I mean, when you go to prison,
- 8:28I mean you can't have to make the best of it, I guess.
- 8:30But he's he's having a great time he's having it. I mean, he's
- 8:33having pretty much a great time. He's cell mates are kind of a problem
- 8:35here. He's going he goes through cell mates like he goes through white people
- 8:39go through water. But he has one. His uh current cellmate that he
- 8:43ends with is a very interesting man. His name is low E like l
- 8:52O w k e Y very interesting fellow. Low key low key that his
- 9:00name. Yeah, he's very low key. Huh ha ha ha ha ha
- 9:07ha ha. Very well. Yeah, his name is first name is low
- 9:13last name Key, and then it's live Smith is his full name is the
- 9:18guy's full name, and they are telling jokes each other's as like Shadow on
- 9:26his last day starts marking off. He's been marking off days that he gets
- 9:28to be released, and upon back into Decide of America, he ends up
- 9:46getting released three days early because he was waiting for it. So originally his
- 9:50wife was gonna come get him, and he's they're gonna have a big old
- 9:52surprise party for him to get released and everything. But he got released three
- 9:56days early because his wife died of a car accident right off the bat,
- 10:03So they decided to release him three days early because his wife died and he's
- 10:07like, oh, why am I going to release three days early. He's
- 10:09like, oh, yeah, so your wife is dead. And he's like
- 10:13what, yeah, you know, good behavior, community service parole. Your
- 10:16wife is dead. Your wife is dead. Yeah. Of course he's obviously
- 10:22distraught by the fact that she's dead, obviously, and he she So he
- 10:31also learns that he died or she died with his best friend Robbie, because
- 10:37when he got was when he was going to get out of prison. He
- 10:41was also he had a job waiting for him his best friend at his there
- 10:46was a mechanic job, and they found his wife did. But he also
- 10:50found out the only job he was going to get also personal I was gonna
- 10:56give him that also died in that sett of car accident. So they're both
- 11:00in the same car together when they died. Are you thinking what I'm thinking?
- 11:09Because I sure was so with that. Now with this, with talking
- 11:20about this book, I'm not gonna go over every single little, idiotsy little
- 11:24detail. I'm hitting the big major points. Off said, sorry, because
- 11:28otherwise we'll be here all fucking day. Because the novel, like I said,
- 11:31is very dense for the four hundred pages, So we jump a bit.
- 11:35But he goes to the funeral for his wife and he finds out that
- 11:41his wife had an affair with his best friend, who is going to give
- 11:43him that job at the mechanic job because he found out from he found out
- 11:50from his wife from his best friend's wife. Apparently she died. Now this
- 11:56is gonna be very team am I. This book is very adult. It
- 12:01does not shy over over certain topics of certain things they go in daytown and
- 12:05how she died or how they found them. Uh, Robbie got into a
- 12:11car accident while Laura Laura. Yeah, Laura was in the middle of give
- 12:22me him a fully shadow, give him head RoadHead Yeah yeah, yeah,
- 12:26they crash and she apparently she bit off his uh member as they were crashing,
- 12:35so his member was down her the road. Well, it looks like
- 12:41RoadHead turned into roadkill. Wow, golf clap for that joke. Yeah.
- 12:52Now, Robbie's best friend was also Laura's best friend. So they had the
- 12:56funeral is what Obviously rob His wife was very upset and she went up to
- 13:03Laura's Gray Laura's coffin. I can't remember the coffin was open or if it
- 13:09was the close casket because it might have been close casket, but she was
- 13:13like, you were my best friend. And then she and then she spit
- 13:18at the at the dead body. She said, you fucking wore And I'm
- 13:22like, old, there's some tea here. I was like, day,
- 13:26the drama of it all, wow, mm hmmm. I mean you can't
- 13:28blame her, Yeah, exactly. Her husband, her husband and her best
- 13:33friend both died horribly in the car crash, and she found out, oh,
- 13:39they're having an affair. They're having an affair, and they literally found
- 13:46her best friend with her husband's dick literally down her throat. So yeah,
- 13:52and it would be understandably pissed about that. So you can't really blame her
- 13:54for that. That that that is completely fair. That's completely yeah. As
- 14:01Shadow has been dealing with the funeral and the fact of what the fuck am
- 14:05I gonna do now? I don't have a place to go because my wife's
- 14:09dead. I don't have a job anymore because Robbie's dead. I don't have
- 14:16anything. That's it for me? What the fuck? He's like, I'm
- 14:18better off going back to jail. At this point, then he comes across
- 14:22an old man, a very old man, that's a con man, very
- 14:26mysterious conment. He goes by the name of mister Wednesday. An that's yeah,
- 14:37that's con man's name, mister Wednesday. For my mythological my mythology girlies,
- 14:45Wednesday's a clue. If like low Key wasn't a wasn't a clue,
- 14:54Wednesday's another clue. So uh, he decides to take up this job being
- 15:00this con man's mister Wednesday's bodyguard because he's just like, I have nowhere else
- 15:05to go, Fuck it, Let's just do it, because otherwise he was
- 15:07just gonna rob a store to go back to jail. Oh like, I
- 15:11got nothing else going for me, Let's go. So he decides to take
- 15:13up this job, and him and mister Wednesday travel across the United States and
- 15:20they visit Wednesday's acquaintances confidants. They met a bunch of different people along their
- 15:31journey, and Shadow then meets a very well okay so, one of the
- 15:39first people they meet on their little journey across the United States is named Matt
- 15:45Sweeney. Matt Sweeney is a ginger man. Now in the I like him
- 15:50better. Honestly, I like him better in the show than the book because
- 15:52the book that make him seem like a redneck irishman like backwards heaven why beat
- 16:00wearing Like, I don't like that depiction of him. The TV show depiction
- 16:03of Mitte Sweeney love it. He's a irishman that calls himself a leprechaun,
- 16:11but he's like six foot Like well, on the show he was six foot.
- 16:18I think in the book he was actually a little shorter than six foot,
- 16:22but he is still way taller than than your typical image of a leprechaun.
- 16:27They met Matt Sweeney and he gives Shadow a gold coin after he decides
- 16:33to have a bar fight with Shadow because Matt Sweeny loves to fight. He's
- 16:37like, okay, let's he decided to beat up on Shadow, and when
- 16:44Shadow won, he's like, here's a gold coin. He gets a gold
- 16:45coin from the lepre gun. Shadow is not catching on. He's like,
- 16:49this is all fucking weird, but okay, yes, okay, all right.
- 16:56Shadow then tosses said coin. Now this is all still in the hometown
- 17:02where him and his wife were living. Now this is right before they leave.
- 17:08Shadow has the coin, but he throws it down onto his wife's grave
- 17:15where his wife's yeah, grave at the funeral. When that happens, the
- 17:23coin brings her back to life. She becomes walking undead because the coin like
- 17:33burrows into the flesh and shit. She comes back to life obviously because of
- 17:37the coin, but she's technically still dead. Her body's not like she's not
- 17:44like, oh my god, I'm fully healed and resurrected. No, she's
- 17:48still like a corpse. But she's now alive and she she has all our
- 17:53memories and shit, but she's just unfortunately a now a coherent moving around talking.
- 18:00So that causes a whole lot of problems cause you know, uh yeah.
- 18:10So from there, Shadow then leaves and meets Then they go to Chicago
- 18:17for this one. Along their journey they take a lot of economy them.
- 18:22That's when he joins them and he's like, Okay, where are we going
- 18:26now? And I'm pretty sure it's in Chicago and they meet Oh God,
- 18:30how I pronounce his name? So he meets Turn the Bog and the Zorira
- 18:34Sisters, which are the audience knows well know that basically they are Scandinavian gods
- 18:48the m they're more specifically Russian. Yeah, they come from like old Russian
- 19:03low it's like it's part of like Scandinavian lore that has Russia that like Russia
- 19:11has its own like indigenous lore, similar to like the Scandinavian stuff. It's
- 19:17the West Slavics. It is where they come from, which is like Polish,
- 19:22Czech Slavic Lower Saudi Arabia, Upper Saudi Arabia, which all used to
- 19:30be a good chunk of the western part of the Soviet Union back in the
- 19:33day. Yeah, that little region right before you get to the main country
- 19:38of Russia, uh Churnabog And it's the sisters, the zoria Rus Sisters,
- 19:48the Zoria's Sisters, the Turnabog. Okay, getting back to Turnabog, Turnabog
- 19:52is technically a god of evil. He's repped him and his brother. So
- 20:00he has a brother, which you which he kind of mentions in the story.
- 20:04His mother's like the light and he's the darkness, is what they kind
- 20:08of what they what they talk about in the book obviously in the in the
- 20:11actual mythologies to it than just that. But he's the his brother is the
- 20:17light, and he's the shadow. Only one can put show up at one
- 20:18time. They can't alternate and ship. So currently I can't think of his
- 20:26brother's name, Bella Bog, really Bog, but the Johnny, do you
- 20:33know his brother's name is the Bella Bog, Bello Bog. Okay, that's
- 20:40what Okay, cool, cool, I'm pronouncing that one correct. Bella Bog
- 20:42is currently dead and that's his twin brother in the story. Now, the
- 20:49sisters, the Zorio sisters represent basically, they're they're there's a Slavic version of
- 20:55the the god, the I want to say, the fates, but they're
- 21:02probably closer towards the nerds, where they can see one can see the past,
- 21:07one I can see the president, one can see the future. They're
- 21:11very similar to those, but each sister has a certain time of day that
- 21:17they show up at. One shows up at dawn, one shows up at
- 21:22uh I think what dusk, and the other one shows up at twilight.
- 21:26One's they're not all up at the same time. They go and they go
- 21:30in God, what the They're going rotation on who's up and who's asleep and
- 21:37who's doing whatever. So one of the sisters ends up giving Shadow a silver
- 21:42coin which came from the moon, or if you're watching the show, it's
- 21:48like she literally gives him the moon and takes the shape of a silver coin,
- 21:55and he's like what. And of course this dream they had because he
- 21:57was staying with them for I think like a day or two, and he
- 22:03thought he was having a dream of meeting the Twilight Sister and he gave her
- 22:11she gave him the moon, and he's like what. He woke up and
- 22:14he thought this was a dream and then he realized, oh shit, so
- 22:18he thought he was like tripping out from there. After getting the silver coin
- 22:26that the sister tells him that we'll protect him while he goes on this journey,
- 22:33Shadow learns that Wednesday is a Wednesday is a day of the week,
- 22:42right, Wednesday is considered Odin's day. Too long after all that, he
- 22:52finds out Wednesday is Odin. Now in the show, that's something completely different.
- 22:59He has a fine out that Wednesday is Odin. This soon and the
- 23:03show. He finds out Wednesday is Odin towards the things towards the end of
- 23:07season one or over halfway through season one, where he's dealing with he meets
- 23:11Easter, which in the book, Easter doesn't even come into play till much
- 23:17much later, and even then she's barely there. You find out. He
- 23:22finds out that Wednesday is Odin, the Norse God, quite earlier than he
- 23:30does in the show. Yeah, So after finding out about Wednesday being Odin,
- 23:38and then he really and then he starts kind of putting everything together that
- 23:41all the people, all the weird people he's met so far, Matt Sweeney,
- 23:45China, Bog, those Order sisters are all obviously gods, old gods.
- 23:51And he learns about Odin's mission to try and gather a bunch of old
- 23:56gods to take on these new gods, new American gods. And he's trying
- 24:04to gather adversaries for this war that's gonna happen old gods gods, yes,
- 24:15old god versus new gods. And while all that with the Moon and finding
- 24:25out about Odin, he makes a bet with Turnibog that he ends up losing,
- 24:32and Turnibog gets to So basically the bet was that if I think it
- 24:37was a game with checkers, and Turnabog and Shadow played a game of checkers
- 24:41and shows like cool if I win, right, If I win, you
- 24:45go with us, you go with me and Wednesday, and if you win,
- 24:49you kill me. He basically he offers up himself his head in this
- 24:56game to turn a Bog. He's like, cool, if I lose,
- 24:59you could take you could take a hammer, your hammer to my face,
- 25:02to my skull, crack it open like a night. He ends up losing,
- 25:07and Turnabog agrees to go with Wednesday. Do what Wednesday wants to do.
- 25:14But at the end of it all, he'll take a hammer too Skyle's
- 25:19face. At the very end of it, after it's all said and done,
- 25:23he'll die by turner Bog's hand. Turner Bog agrees the sisters obviously will
- 25:30hold the fort as Turnabog leaves as well with Wednesday. Oh okay, so
- 25:41I did forget. I didn't miss something. Now, back when he was
- 25:42still at home in his hometown before with Matt Sweeney, Wednesday he did come
- 25:48across. Well, he'll soon be known, soon to know as the one
- 25:52of the new Gods. A young man caught captured Shadow deliverally a message that
- 26:06to tell when basically to tell Wednesday that he is and I quote dumpster of
- 26:11history and their goal is to read and I quote reprogram reality. So he's
- 26:19techically already met one of them before, but he just didn't know that they
- 26:22were the new quote unquote the New Gods. And that's another thing with that
- 26:32young man. That young man is considered techno boy. He's the tech he's
- 26:37the technology deity of the New Gods. In the show, they make him
- 26:41look like a very rich white boy, uh, skinny, freaking full of
- 26:48himself. In the show. It's quite the opposite. In the show,
- 26:56he's very overweight, he's very ugly. They make him more attractive in the
- 27:00show, and he's very just unseemly. He's not very attractive in any way
- 27:07preted in the show. He's not really either, But they didn't make him
- 27:11a big boy because he's like really heavy set, almost like a fucking like
- 27:18humpty dumpty, not humpty dumpty freaking tweeto d and tweeted dumb. That was
- 27:23the imagery I got from the description of technob boy to the logical boy A
- 27:27sweet o D what it's very dopey looking. Yeah, it's basically like if
- 27:36someone spent their whole level on at a computer. They didn't leave it.
- 27:41They just ate drank the other life at a computer and name going outside.
- 27:45That's what you look like, look like one of those people that lived at
- 27:48internet cafes. And shit. Okay, cool. So as we continue on
- 27:53the story with Turnbot, this is the bad his head blown up, brains
- 28:00plowed into the ground. When all this is said and done, finds out
- 28:03odin Gods, new gods, all that kind of shit. Uh, Shadow
- 28:08is not take is kind of like weirded out by all this and obviously it's
- 28:11like a computer processing all this all this information. At one He's just he
- 28:18was just living his life as a human and then he's getting thrown into this
- 28:21mess. So he leaves the house. Well, of course, one of
- 28:29the Zoira's, one of the sisters, says their goodbyes to Wednesday and Shadow
- 28:37as they leave. Of course, Shadow does have that coin from the day
- 28:42from the night before, from that dream he had in his hand, and
- 28:48of course he flipped the leaves with Wednesday. From there they decide to There
- 28:59was a cool little history lesson in this because sometimes you get little little tidbits
- 29:02from Wednesday, and one of my favorite ones was this one that happened right
- 29:06after they left Zaira. Wednesday talks about Lady Liberty, how Lady Liberty is
- 29:14is a technically a foreigner, and how we as Americans put Lady Liberty as
- 29:22a symbol or quote unquote freedom, and he says, and I quote Liberty
- 29:30is a bitch who must be betting on a mattress of corpses. And I'm
- 29:36like, damn, wow, I mean that's America for you. So I
- 29:41mean, yeah, I like that's interesting. So technically, lady Liberty is
- 29:48a old deity as well in a weird way. He doesn't really go much
- 29:52in detail after that. He just says that little comment, and I'm like,
- 29:56damn, that's intense. So now our Wednesday takes shout out to a
- 30:03bank which they eventually rob, or Wednesday robs later. So they going to
- 30:11go about the place and devise a plan they come back later to rob.
- 30:15Said now, of course Odin is also a god of wisdom luck obviously they
- 30:26rob the banks. They don't get caught, but they rob it because Odin's
- 30:30like, we need money, we need money to get places, so let's
- 30:33get the money. And when and shouts like, I'm not going back to
- 30:37jail. I'm not doing it. I'm not going back to jail. And
- 30:40it's like, you're fine, we won't get caught. It's fine, it's
- 30:45fine. Well did you hear that? I did oh I did hear that?
- 30:52Oh my god, that's what's loud, not really loud, but why
- 31:03do I want to go? So now they robbed the bank, and they
- 31:12because they ask, They go through a whole freaking ruse. And how Odin
- 31:21robs his brain is like a whole process. He gets checks from the teller,
- 31:23he drops, He's like, oh God, drop objects, blah blah
- 31:26blah, and he just goes to this whole ruse and the whole Diabocle plan
- 31:30that makes no fucking sense while reading it. And at the very end and
- 31:36it's like he puts it all together and he's like, all this plan,
- 31:37see, all this will work out in the end. It does for him,
- 31:40because that's just how Odin works. When they get all the money,
- 31:45they decided to piece the fuck out. Wednesday gets Shadowy, new identity,
- 31:52new identity, and new papers. The whole works. Yeah wow. And
- 31:59from there they go on their journey through the rest of America as they try
- 32:05to gather more of Wednesday's allies, including mister Nancy, who is actually a
- 32:15god of stories, wisdom and knowledge and trickery from African Lord. He's the
- 32:20spider god. Mister Nancy. He also tries to gather Easter, who's a
- 32:28or a Stara as she's known. She's a gods, a fertility from the
- 32:32Germanic Old Germanic mythology. Now, of course Easter is still technically so the
- 32:40whole idea of the God, old gods and new gods is the fact that
- 32:44the old gods are not getting the worship they used to get. Well,
- 32:46obviously the new gods are, and some of the old gods are aligning themselves
- 32:51with the new ones to get that praise where they could still be relevant to
- 32:57the world. And the current day Easter is one of those gods that's still
- 33:05being worshiped indirectly because Easter the holiday. Now, for those religious folks out
- 33:13there, if you're listening to this to this episode, hate to break the
- 33:19news to you. Easter holiday is not a Christian holidays. Riginally, it's
- 33:23readapted from a holiday surrounded by Astara, for it was a holiday, a
- 33:30pagan holiday in the spring that celebrate fertility and rebirth, and technically they readapted
- 33:37that holiday for the Christian hall that we have today. But Astara is still
- 33:43technically getting worshiped indirectly through the skies of Jesus Christ and that story with Easter,
- 33:52but she's still kind of relevant in a weird third party kind of way.
- 33:58She's not They're not like war shipping a star up. But she's like,
- 34:00cool, I'll take the power. Why take what I can get?
- 34:07And they go more into that with the show itself rather than the book,
- 34:10because in the books she's kind of just there well improvised it to overcome exactly.
- 34:17They also meet a guy named Whiskey Jack, which he is not in
- 34:23the show. Whiskey Jack is God. I don't even describe whiskey Jack.
- 34:34Now. Whiskey Jack is Oh he is. I'm assuming he is from tribal
- 34:42mythol from once some of the tribe of tribal mythology, some of the Native
- 34:47tribes. He's depicture as a crane or a bird of some kind, depending
- 34:53on the tribe, and he is a He's also the one supposedly responsible for
- 35:02the great flood in old Native tribe tribal stories. Okay, which you which
- 35:12is kind of funny, how the great flood? How law mythology. Some
- 35:15of the really older ones also do have a great flood at that end of
- 35:20the world. I've destroyed the world. Christians do that, and there's and
- 35:27and then there's Greek. They have their own and I've heard I've heard like
- 35:34the Native American mythology once before, but I wasn't sure if it was credible
- 35:38because I read it in another Uh it was in the Twilight Books of all
- 35:45things. Yeah, there's much, no, yeah there, Yeah, there's
- 35:51a bunch of Uh. This deity is a god of from like several different
- 35:55tribes has He has many different names, but in their creation story of how
- 36:01they explain the animals in the geographical locations saying that he is responsible on the
- 36:07earth. So it's like, I've found that interesting. But yeah, whiskey
- 36:09Jack is one the lesser known gods that you that you see in this story,
- 36:15because you would have I had to look them up, be like,
- 36:17who the hell is that? Who's whiskey Jack? So I had to look
- 36:22that one up. And of course you got John Chapman, who is a
- 36:28ka Johnny Appleseed. Yes, Johnny Appleseed, Ladies and Jenthlemen is technically American
- 36:36mythology, but he's also a real person. So it's weird that one's that
- 36:42one gets a little Yeah, Johnny Appleseed, John Chapman, some of the
- 36:51many characters that he comes across on their journeys. The New Gods, of
- 36:54course, consist of the Internet, which would be technological boy, media who,
- 37:00media or persona. She changes her appearance depending on the the like she
- 37:09changes the appearance from I Love Lucy to like in the show David Bowie to
- 37:15I think in season two of the of the American Gods series, they she
- 37:20turned into like a K pop star, like a K pop influencer, and
- 37:23she changes her appearance pretty ugly throughout the story to kind of reflect the ever
- 37:30changing form of media in the United States and the New World. And they're
- 37:37all led by a guy named mister World as the head of that now.
- 37:52So the New Gods abdug Shadow again amongst their journey because he gets abducted by
- 37:59them all by by a group of shadowy men in black that they call the
- 38:04Spooks. And the Spooks have weird names like mister Wood, mister Stone,
- 38:10mister House. It's all like miss mister and they it's something and what I
- 38:19can correlate to, And they don't really explain that much in the book,
- 38:22but like mister Stone, mister Wood, they kind of give you a little
- 38:28give you a hint that these were old gods that signed up with the new
- 38:31gods and they got like a new name, mister Wood, mister Stone,
- 38:35whatever happened maybe, and they're just nothing more than goons for the new gods.
- 38:42But they somehow, but they keep relevancy in a different way than the
- 38:49normal way of Oh God would get worshiped in Chad. So, uh,
- 38:53Shadow gets abducted again by the spooks, led by of course, mister World,
- 39:00who was the Big Cheese. Laura rescues him his dead wife who got
- 39:06resurrected. She rescues him killing off a bunch of spooks, so she apparently
- 39:10has superpowers now super strength, durability, and Wednesday tells him to hide from
- 39:21there when he escapes, because she kind of just says and then she pieces
- 39:23out and then Wednesday's like, yeah, you need to go hide with mister
- 39:29Oh God, mister Jackal and mister Ibbys, which is mister Ibbis is Ath
- 39:37and Jackal is a Newbis respectful, which of course Nubis for those of you
- 39:45who don't know, as a god of funeral rites, graves, protector of
- 39:51graves, and guide to the underworld. Which is a Newbis. And then
- 39:54Thoth is a god, an Egyptian god of knowledge and wisdom. Yes,
- 40:02that's about to say knowledge, wisdom, writing, hieroglyphic science, magic,
- 40:06art, and judgment. And those two run a funeral home together. I
- 40:14find it adorable. It makes sense for a new biss off. Yeah,
- 40:23you know, they run a funeral parlor in Cairo, Illinois, which is
- 40:28a real city or town in Illinois, and in Cairo. So Sweeney the
- 40:36leprechaun bay Is he kind of he ventured off among their journey, and he
- 40:43kind of just he's not as much in the book around like he is in
- 40:46the show, because in the show he's around quite a bit, but in
- 40:50the book he kind of ventured. He splits off for a while because he
- 40:53kind of gets tired of Wednesday and how he's like when Odin's manipulating everything blah
- 40:59blah blah blah blah, and interest I say, fuck y'all. In pieces
- 41:00out, But he ends up popping up again at the funeral home while Shadows
- 41:07in hiding out, and he begs for his coin back because he gave the
- 41:10wrong coin to Shadow. He was supposed to give Shadow a normal gold coin
- 41:17but the coin that he gave Shadow was very important to him because he owed
- 41:23somebody that Yeah, he owed somebody that coin and he gave yeah, he
- 41:32gave him the actually gave him the wrong coin, and it held that particular
- 41:37coin they gave. Shadow held all all held all his luck as well,
- 41:45so he was not lucky this whole time. Without having that coin, his
- 41:49life was complete shit. Anything bad that could happen did happen to Sweetey.
- 41:55Mad Sweetey and he's begging for the coin, but he'said, give it back
- 42:00to me, I need it, and Shadow that he doesn't have the coin
- 42:07anymore because he put the because he gave the coin put it in his wife's
- 42:13grave, and the coin is sitting in his wife's chest. So he is
- 42:19like, I don't have it, bro, and Sweeney gets very upset.
- 42:25He storms off. He doesn't. He's Matt Sweeney in the book is kind
- 42:34of set is kind of depressing because he is a desperate man that wants is
- 42:39that wants his luck back as a lopper conn of like, he talks like
- 42:45that's all he has in life, it's just that, and he lost it.
- 42:47So he goes he storms off and they do find him later, but
- 42:52they find him dead. Uh oh, yeah, Sweeney died. I was
- 42:57very upset. Doesn't the show and the show had he does die, but
- 43:00he doesn't die till much much later because he's in the series a lot more.
- 43:06But yes, Sween, he dies and he had a fold. He
- 43:15had a whole funeral and everything too, and they're like, what so unfortunately
- 43:21he deceased then he used to be. Yeah, it was kind of depressing
- 43:29because they were when they found his body. He was on the side of
- 43:32the road. He had like a bottle in his hand and he drank.
- 43:35I think he drunk, either drunk himself he died of I don't remember how
- 43:44he died exactly, because I don't think anyone. I don't think anyone came
- 43:51up to him and just killed him but pulled up future demon cuts proud Johnny.
- 43:59How did how did MATD. Sweeney die in the book? Did he
- 44:01die just like a bottle inside of him he just basically drank himself to death?
- 44:05Or do he Because I don't think anyone killed him. I think he
- 44:09just died because he was just unloocky and just kind of just drank himself.
- 44:14Think I'll go with that. Anyway, his death was very depressing, and
- 44:22I was very sad because MATD. Sweeny's one of my favorite characters in this
- 44:31Yeah. Yeah, he freezes to death. So he dies a very very
- 44:37depressing death, freezes to death, freezes to death out in the cold,
- 44:42which kind of go shows how how his luck was just not on his side
- 44:45anymore. And they found him dead a while later, a free stormed off.
- 44:50They his body was tended to buy of course a Nubis in thought,
- 44:54and they put him up down and they kind of talk about how they it's
- 45:00like, well, there's another one of us gone, another old god gone
- 45:04to the world and the world never knew mm hm on. And then from
- 45:12there other stuff happens. But of course Shadow relocates again from Cairo. It
- 45:21relocates to Lakeside, Lakeside in this town in Wisconsin. Shadow picks up a
- 45:30hitchhiker on the way named Samantha black Crow as he's traveling up to Lakeside because
- 45:37Wednesday sent him there. He's like, you need a hideout, so we're
- 45:42gonna send you to a faraway place that we make it real difficult to find
- 45:46you. So you're gonna go to this random fucking place in the middle of
- 45:51fucking nowhere in Wisconsin, Lakeside. You have a house, you have your
- 45:54name, you have a you got money. Lived there for hideout. That's
- 46:00what he did. He wanted to go hide out. Picked up a girl
- 46:02on the way up there, Samantha, and he drops her off at her
- 46:07house, and then he continues on into Lakeside and once he gets there,
- 46:13he hides out under the alias Mike Ansel. This is alias while he's spending
- 46:22a lot of his time in Linkside, Mike Ansel. He spends his time
- 46:28with several Lakeside residents, including a elderly man that introduces him, well,
- 46:36introduces himself to him when he first comes into the town, as well as
- 46:39he pops up pretty odically throughout his time there. His name is Hanselman.
- 46:46Heinselman, Yeah, Hinselman. And of course he meets the chairff of the
- 46:52town, a local reporter, and they lived a very simple little life.
- 46:58It's not a lot going on there. It's pretty much there's a lake,
- 47:01there's a town. Everyone minds their own business, keys very quiet. He's
- 47:06just there to hide out. Yeah. Now, when when Shadow decides dig
- 47:19in a little more into Lakeside because there is some ooky, spooky shit happening
- 47:25there. Henzelman then along this journey is he's finding out that that Lakeside is
- 47:34not all that's cracked up to be. There's some there's some ship bruin.
- 47:38He finds out that Lakeside has a tradition of taking a car onto the ice,
- 47:44belt the ice, and belt on onto the ice and belt on when
- 47:51it okay. So they have a tradition in lakes Side where they take a
- 47:55car out on the ice and it's a wait for them to tell that because
- 48:00will walk across the the frozen lake. They put a car on there and
- 48:05when it's the cars, when the ice thaws out, the car will obviously
- 48:07sink into the lake and that's when they'll know, okay, cool, we
- 48:12don't go walk on the ice. If the car falls, it's a way
- 48:15to keep it's a way to tell if it's safe to walk on the ice
- 48:17or not. So they have that weird ass tradition here there in Lakeside and
- 48:25Wednesday throughout all this periodically takes shadow on jobs, meet the meet old Gods
- 48:31throughout. So he comes and goes. They are pursued all while by the
- 48:38spooks. During all this, he is by one of them. One of
- 48:44the big ones that pursues him is known as mister Town, who blames Shadow
- 48:49for the death of friends and I think what I think his friends were like
- 48:54mister Wood and mister Stone. Basically he mister Town blames Shadow for the death
- 49:02of those friends of his, but in reality, Shadow didn't kill them.
- 49:07His wife did. Who's undead, super big. She's over there killing people
- 49:12and she killed them, not him, but mister Town blames Shadow for that.
- 49:17During all the fiasca, so mister Town has a vendetta where it's like
- 49:21it's on site when Shadow comes back after several of those missions, and during
- 49:25one in between all that, he catches word that a teenager in Lake's Side
- 49:31has gone missing, and he joins the rest of the town folk as he
- 49:37tries to find this teenage girl. He learns that another teenage girl in the
- 49:45town have also has also gone missing. Like this is a trend. This,
- 49:51this teenager that went missing is not the first. It's one of many
- 49:53over the course of the last several years that in this town that teenagers and
- 49:59kids go missing. So he's trying to solve this murder case that's happening while
- 50:06all this is what he's also dealing with Wednesday and his bullshit. He's then
- 50:10arrested for breaking his parole and they kind of assume that he might be responsible
- 50:19for the missing teenager, well at least this particular recent one. They arrest
- 50:24him when they find out who he really is, but he does escape with
- 50:28the help of Trinibog and mister Nancy. So they come in they give him
- 50:32the fuck out, like cool, we're getting you the fuck out of here.
- 50:36So he finds out that the girl that the teenage girl that went missing
- 50:42this time around was the one he drove, Samantha. The one he drove
- 50:45he gave a lyft to when he was coming into town, but he dropped
- 50:51her right in front of her house and then she went missing. And then
- 50:54they found her at the bomb of the lick. That's suspicious. That is
- 50:58suspicious. So the new Gods and the old gods are getting ready for war
- 51:02Avvy and they're getting ready for war in a city known as Rock City.
- 51:08Rock City, Tennessee. If you have not been there, please do yourself
- 51:13a favor. Go up there. It's quite nice. It's a city,
- 51:16I mean, obviously it's Rock City. So there's rocks caves, it's at
- 51:21the top of God. It's up in the Appalachian Mountains or Appalachian Mountains in
- 51:28Tennessee, and it's a nice little place where you can see cave systems,
- 51:32rock, nice rocks, and ship there's a reason why they call it rock
- 51:37City's a bunch of rocks up them. But it's it's I've been there.
- 51:42I've been there since I was a child, when I lived in Tennessee.
- 51:45But it was great. So I was like, Rock City, I've been
- 51:47there. Wow, Okay, rock City, all right, that's weird.
- 51:55Apparently Rock City has a Apparently Rocks City has a very has an important connection
- 52:01to the gods. And that's almost kind of like an I'm trying to remember
- 52:07how they described it's a place where the gods could go to have their battle
- 52:14because they don't. They will not. They don't have their battle on Earth
- 52:16per se. They have it in like a different realm almost, if that
- 52:24makes sense, like an a kind of like an astroplane in a way,
- 52:30because they don't they don't literally go in god mode and fight on Earth.
- 52:39I'm trying to make it make sense, but it's it's it's a lot more
- 52:44confusing, and I'm not doing a very good job at explaining it. So
- 52:49it's a place for them to basically be able to just go out without yeah,
- 52:53doing any like kind of like irreparable damage to Yes, the world.
- 52:59Yes, and all these old gods are coming into the fray as well,
- 53:05and of course all these new gods are coming in. It's become a war
- 53:07zone both sides. You get this is during the part of the story where
- 53:10you get a bunch of little appearances of other old gods that they give names
- 53:17to or they give descriptions to you, and you're kind of like, that
- 53:21seems familiar. They have a lot of real interesting ones. Granted they're like
- 53:27cameos, so they're not necessarily important, But even when y'all read the book,
- 53:34you're gonna be looking at some of those descriptions you're like, huh,
- 53:37who's that? Who's that? Or oh, my god, I know who
- 53:39that is. There's a lot of that because everybody's pulling up, pulling out
- 53:46for the war by rock. By the time Rock City happens, MHM Wednesday
- 54:01was captured by the New gods and he was murdered. Oh uh, huh.
- 54:09They killed They killed Odin. The New Gods killed Odin, and that's
- 54:13what started this. That's what the war was gonna happen anyway. But the
- 54:16fact that they killed Wednesday sent everyone into a frenzy, and everyone's like,
- 54:22cool, we're all going to rock. See, we're gonna fuck shit up,
- 54:25y'all gonna fucking die. So that's what started. That's what really put
- 54:30the fire under the Old God's asses, is that they killed Odin, the
- 54:35one part, the one god that was trying to rally everybody up to fight
- 54:39off the New Gods dead like Stab Stab deceased. So as everyone's rallying up
- 54:49for the war, Wednesday's bodies retrieved back by Shadow, and he's just surprised
- 54:57to discover that his old prison cellmate and mentor, low Key, is working
- 55:07as a driver for the New Gods. Oh God, that's suspicion I am.
- 55:13Of course, of course low Ki would do it. I mean his
- 55:15name is low I don't know what you're talking about. Who's just low Key.
- 55:21Let's not play around. We know we all know who that is.
- 55:23I didn't. I never knew who that was. I never knew who that
- 55:27was? What never so Low is read the book and I know exactly who
- 55:35that is. Yeah, it's Loky, It's Loking. So Low is a
- 55:39driver for the New Gods and he comes across Shadow and he's like, know
- 55:45you, and Shadow is, of course yeah, he sees Loki or Low
- 55:57and he's just like, who, why the fuck are you here? And
- 55:59he's like, I'm hired for a job. Lookings like I'm just minding my
- 56:01own business. Don't look at me. You don't know me? What you
- 56:07don't know me? It was it was pretty funny. It's like, what's
- 56:10he doing here? Because I already knew that Low Low Ki was Loki.
- 56:16It's kind of funny what Loki? Who? Huh? Huh? What huh?
- 56:23And even though Shadow is dead, not Shadow, Wednesday is dead,
- 56:29Shadow is still bound by the contract he made with Wednesday. At did all
- 56:35of this to hold his So back track a little bit, when Loki not
- 56:44Loki? When when before Wednesday died, Shadow and Wednesday made a blood pack
- 56:50blood pack. No, they drink, they drink to it. They did
- 56:54the old fashioned way that drink. They made a deal and they drank to
- 56:58it. And the deal was to do for Shadow to do Wednesday's visual by
- 57:06reenacting Odin's time hanging from the world tree. So, if you all don't
- 57:13know Norse mythology, Odin spent some time. This is where he lost his
- 57:20eye. Yes, this is where he lost his eye. He was so
- 57:27there's a story of Odin how he lost his eyety he became all powerful and
- 57:30shit. He basically was hanging from the world tree for a very very long,
- 57:37significant amount of time. He was also not significant amount of time,
- 57:43but like nine days, but nine days with a spear in your sides a
- 57:45lot. So Shadow is supposed to hang reenact. Basically, to do his
- 57:52visual is to hang from the world tree with a spear in his side like
- 57:57Odin did for nine days. He's supposed to do for nine days. And
- 58:01granted, Shadow's mortal, so he's like, I'm a Everyone around him is
- 58:07like, no, you're not doing it. We'll have someone else do it,
- 58:08someone that will live, because you do it, you're gonna die.
- 58:13And Shadow was like, now I'm gonna do it. I'm gonna fucking do
- 58:16it. So he does it. Let me let me tell you something.
- 58:25By this point he goes, Shadow goes from love to hate when hating Wednesday
- 58:32throughout this whole story because Wednesday is a bitch. He's a bitch. It's
- 58:37a big bitch. But Shadow has a weird, weird relationship with Wednesday,
- 58:45and he's like, I said I was gonna do it, so I'm gonna
- 58:49do it. And Wednesday's went over and beyond for Shadow countless times as well,
- 58:55So he's like, I owe Wednesday that to do that. So during
- 58:59those nine when he's hanging from that tree, from that world tree, as
- 59:05the war is happening in rocks, during those nine days, he is visited
- 59:12by Horace. And to those of you who don't know, Horace is an
- 59:19Egyptian god, and he's an Egyptian god of kingship, healing, protection,
- 59:23the sun and the sky. But Horace is not He has long gone mad
- 59:34and now he's just a bird. He's a hawk permanently because they discribed they
- 59:40talk about how if they the gods stay in their animal forms for too long,
- 59:45they get stuck. Horas obviously got stuck, so the Horace is now
- 59:52just a hawk flying around and they do this and he's kind of a weird.
- 59:58So in Norse mythology, got the word tree, you got the squirrel,
- 1:00:00you got the dragon. You got the serpent. But there's also a
- 1:00:05bird that a hawk. Okay, there's a bird, right, I'm not
- 1:00:09tripping, right, there's a bird. And with the world that lives in
- 1:00:13the world tree. Yeah, there's an eagle, Yes, an eagle.
- 1:00:17So Horace is supposed to represent the eagle in the world tree and I'm like
- 1:00:21that's interesting. I like what they did though with that kind of merging in
- 1:00:24the mythologies a little bit. So Horace is there and he lives his life
- 1:00:30as a hawk basically Shadow then during the course of those nine days dies unfortunately,
- 1:00:37and he visits the Land of the Dead where he is then judged by
- 1:00:39a Nibbis as you do. Shadow then learns that during this when he's being
- 1:00:47judged by Nubis, he learns that, sir, you're not just a wardal
- 1:00:54no, no, no, none, You are the Sun of Odin.
- 1:01:00You were Wednesday's son. He's a demigod technically, Oh my god. So
- 1:01:07he finds out that he is the son of Odin and he's like what And
- 1:01:13he's part of the deities plans. All this was planned to happen. Odin
- 1:01:21to die was Gado doing this visual of nine days off the world tree and
- 1:01:27dying and then being finding out all this and hopes that possibly gets godly powers
- 1:01:34bringing back to life and shit that was planned. Everything to this point was
- 1:01:37fabricated and planned by Wednesday, the war everything, And I'm like, hmm
- 1:01:45tee tee. So Wednesday finding out that Odin is the one that started all
- 1:01:55of this, wanted to bring the war, the new Gods and the old
- 1:02:00gods together for getting Shadow, purposely getting with a woman to have Shadow be
- 1:02:09born. All of this low key being there in Shadows cell as a cellmate.
- 1:02:15Everything was fabricated and planned by Odin. Odin plays the fucking long game
- 1:02:22here. He plays the long game. So he is being judged by anubist,
- 1:02:27finds out all this out, and he finds out that he is that
- 1:02:30he is part of this god's plans. During all this time, mister Town
- 1:02:35arrives at said world Tree and he's ordered by mister World to cut down the
- 1:02:39world Tree and I'm like, what cut it down? But Shadows on it?
- 1:02:45What the fuck? Horace then decides to go out and find Easter.
- 1:02:52This is where Easter comes into play more and he convinces her to bring Shadow
- 1:02:58back to life. Shadow then realizes that mister World is low key. Yeah
- 1:03:16my face too. Yeah, yeah, it's crazy. Yeah, Loki is
- 1:03:21mister World all right, right, And Odin and Loki have been playing con
- 1:03:29to man con They've been conning both sides. Oh my god. Odin and
- 1:03:36Loki have been conning the old gods and the New gods for a war.
- 1:03:40And the idea was the orchestra in shadows birth, his meeting of Loki in
- 1:03:46disguise in prison, even Laura's is wife's death, all fabricating Loki had arranged
- 1:03:52for Odin's death, thus making the bottle between the New and Old gods a
- 1:03:55sacrifice to Odin, restoring Odin's power while also allowing Loki to feed off the
- 1:04:01chaos of the battle. So their whole goal was to get their god like
- 1:04:08powers back, have all the gods kill each other, have it be a
- 1:04:12sacrifice to the Great Odin, and then Loki get that power from just the
- 1:04:17pure chaos that's happening during the battle. So both of them, regardless of
- 1:04:21who wins and who loses, they're both when coming out on top because they
- 1:04:27wanted that power back. I was like, you die a boggle, bitches.
- 1:04:33Oh, I was Sugarth beeth So as all this it's starting to come
- 1:04:45to light. Shadow arrives at Rock City after he's brought back to life by
- 1:04:50Easter, of course, and he confronts Loki, now gravely wounded, and
- 1:04:59the ghost of Odin. Loki now gravely wounded with the ghosts of Odin,
- 1:05:04who reveals their plans Hobby. Shadow travels to the site of said battle that's
- 1:05:11happening right now between the Old Gods and New Gods, and he explains to
- 1:05:15both sides that they have nothing to gain from all this, and that Loki
- 1:05:20and Odin are playing all them bitches, and there they're gonna be the true
- 1:05:25winners of the Battle of the War, and all of them are just chess
- 1:05:29pieces in a very long game, long haul game. Y'all saw bitches,
- 1:05:34y'all got play like motherfuckers. It was great. I was like, ah,
- 1:05:41drag him, drag them. So Shadow then that Shadow tells the gods
- 1:05:53basically now. It says, is a terrible place. Don't don't be here.
- 1:05:57It's a bad place. It's a bad place for gods. And he's
- 1:06:00like, yeah, go back to your homelands. Go you're better off going
- 1:06:03back home. Better off going back home. This is a godless land.
- 1:06:08Here go home, bro. So all the gods apart and they go back
- 1:06:12to their homelands instead of standing in the stay instead of standing in the United
- 1:06:16States, and Loki dies. Odin's ghost fades. Laura then asks Shadow to
- 1:06:26take the coin from her, and when he does take the coin from her
- 1:06:30body, she dies. She is finally dead dead, not like partially dead,
- 1:06:34but like good dead. Takes the coin and then he rests. He
- 1:06:40goes back and with mister Nancy, and he rests at the at the funeral
- 1:06:45parlor. And then Shadow has a dream of the god Ganesha, which is
- 1:06:54from Hindu into religion. Ganesha tells him to look in his trunk, look
- 1:07:01in the trunk, well not looks not okay, not wherever? Okay.
- 1:07:08When I first heard that, I was like looking at his trunk and I'm
- 1:07:11like no, wait, he said, look in the trunk, and I'm
- 1:07:15like, what do you mean the trunk? Like what? So Shadow wakes
- 1:07:21up and he goes back to lakeside, and he walked onto the thin ice
- 1:07:27towards the car, resting there because Lake said tradition. He goes up to
- 1:07:35the car, opens the trunk, and what does he find the child's body,
- 1:07:45the body of the child that we're missing. And it kind of comes
- 1:07:50to light that all the cars at the bottom of the bottom of the lake,
- 1:07:56in every single trunk, the child of the town. That comes to
- 1:08:05light, and he finds out that Henzelman, the elderly man that he's been
- 1:08:13quite friendly with as he's been in linksite kind of showing him around town.
- 1:08:16He spent Christmas with them, the whole works. The man that he's been
- 1:08:20friendly with, turns out he's a deity. He's a god. He is
- 1:08:27a he's the god responsible for kidnapping children and killing them. Now he is
- 1:08:31known as a Cobalt in mythology of Northern Germany. Okay, he's basically a
- 1:08:41little guy. Like from what they COBALT's not a dragon, not a little
- 1:08:46dragon guy goblin thing from D and D. A Cobalt is like a He's
- 1:08:50almost like a little gremlin, a little goblin, like a take on a
- 1:08:55goblin. So Henzelman is taking these children, killing them as sacrifices to himself,
- 1:09:05and that's how he stayed alive for so long, because all those deaths
- 1:09:09are sacrifices for him, okay, and Hendelman explains that he regrettively must take
- 1:09:16one child at a sacrifice each year in exchange for the towns on prosperity.
- 1:09:23And I'm like, that's that seems us But okay. The townfolk, of
- 1:09:30course, are unaware of all this that's happening. They just assume children are
- 1:09:33going missing, and they are unaware that he that Hansleman is in control of
- 1:09:40the town at the end of the day. So he finds out they're unaware
- 1:09:47of the town sacrifices. Chia then kills him. Well, he thinks of
- 1:09:56killing him, but he finds that he cannot kill Henselman. He saved his
- 1:10:02life, thank him, he saved his life. However, the sheriff.
- 1:10:10The sheriff, on the other hand overhears his whole conversation. It opened fires
- 1:10:15on Hisselman. The cops like Papa, I can't Papa, and kills him.
- 1:10:25Shadow in the sheriff drive of the sheriff guilty to the point of taking
- 1:10:32his own life. He feels so bad for killing because Hendelman, you see
- 1:10:38over here is the conversation. He just reacts, So he just kills him,
- 1:10:42not really thinking about it. He just reacts Shadow then considers this a
- 1:10:55fail saved creed by Henzelman, so that whoever killed him would soon die after.
- 1:11:00So it's almost like a fella say so, the fact that he killed
- 1:11:01him, he was going to drive the sheriff made to the point where he
- 1:11:06was as like a fallaw safe. So he were to die, you take
- 1:11:11someone with them, or they be blind or they be the one blame for
- 1:11:14the death of the kids. Here the way, it's a fella safe to
- 1:11:15make sure that he comes out on top. Yeah, and I'm assuming also
- 1:11:25that if he kills himself because he killed Henzelman, wouldn't that be a death
- 1:11:34in his name? Would that bring him back? Because so shout with use
- 1:11:45and now that Shadows a god or demigod. He uses magic to change the
- 1:11:49sheriff's memory of overhearing him and the killing of the goblin the cold Uh,
- 1:11:58he leaves the He leaves the sh sheriff and lakeside behind. It kind of
- 1:12:02just like the problem solved, you know. He also understands that the town's
- 1:12:08prosperity will likely wither away without Hiselman's protection, so the fate of the town.
- 1:12:14Basically Shadow killed the guy, and it's like, well, whatever happens
- 1:12:17to the town happens to the town. Now, oh well, I can't
- 1:12:23do it. I can't do anything about it. Henselman's dead. So now
- 1:12:26town's this guy find for itself and hopefully they stuck around. Yeah. So
- 1:12:32from there, this is towards the end of the book, Shadow goes to
- 1:12:39Iceland and he comes across another incarnation of Odin. This incarnation of Odin is
- 1:12:50created by the beliefs of the original settlers of Iceland. Oh okay, Now
- 1:12:58this Odin is more of the white man, not the con man. So
- 1:13:01he's more of the wise old man, and he is much closer to this
- 1:13:06Wednesday, to this particular Odin than the original. Shadow confronts Odin on Wednesday's
- 1:13:18actions or Odin of Wednesday's actions, but Odin reports he's like, and I
- 1:13:24quote he was me, yes, but I'm not him, that they're the
- 1:13:30same different so this iteration, yeah, she says to the same coin,
- 1:13:40Yeah, you're right. He indicates that that Wednesday was part of him that
- 1:13:45went with his followers when they traveled to the New World and became corrupted.
- 1:13:50As he gradually was forgotten, it became that greedy man as everyone was forgetting
- 1:13:57about Odin. A Shadow gives this Odin Wednesday's glass eye. Now, this
- 1:14:06is the eye that Odin lost technically to the world when he did the whole
- 1:14:10world tree fiasco. He lost his eye the game winsdom and Wednesday replaced it
- 1:14:15with a glass eye. So he gave Odin this new Odin Wednesday's glass eye,
- 1:14:20which Odin places in a leather bag for as a keepsake. Shadow then
- 1:14:26performs a single handed coin trick, which he learned from Matt Sweeney. Because
- 1:14:31he's been doing coin tricks throughout the whole fucking story. He became a little
- 1:14:36obsessed with coin tricks and he learned quite a few of them because he had
- 1:14:41a whole fascination with the coin, Matt Sweeney's coin to that coin that was
- 1:14:45the moon and all that kind of fun shit. Okay, from there,
- 1:14:50Shadow then performs a piece of real magic, putting a gold coin from nowhere,
- 1:14:57from pulling a gold coin from nowhere like Mad Sweeney, because when they
- 1:15:00first fought, Matt Sweeny told him, Hey, I will teach you how
- 1:15:03to grab a coin from nothing. It's taut Shadow, the Shadow. It's
- 1:15:11almost like that little piece of memory that Matt Sweeny taught him that disappeared,
- 1:15:16but he remembers how that how he does that now. So Shadow pulls a
- 1:15:23coin off in air like Matt Sweeney, and then he flips the coin up
- 1:15:29and the air and then walks away, and the coin lands, and you
- 1:15:32kind of just left to wonder if the coin will ever come back down.
- 1:15:40So he kind of just flips it and then walks off, and that's the
- 1:15:43end of the story of American Gods. The story's fucking good. It's a
- 1:15:55lot the show doesn't like it in some ways, like for example, and
- 1:16:00the show You Get You Get the gossip Love Love, which is not this
- 1:16:06particular gossip of love was not. Aphroditis Queen Sheba in the Bible. She's
- 1:16:12in the book, but in the book they kill her, and the way
- 1:16:15they kill her is very fucked up. So of course she's a sex worker
- 1:16:21during in this story. And basically, if I remember quicktly, I think
- 1:16:26it was the Techno Boy those are Technical Boy or one of the other gods
- 1:16:30when of the newer gods. But she's on she's on the street and she's
- 1:16:34walking up the street or whatnot, doing her thing, and they come Bine
- 1:16:39to shoot her and then drive off and she's left on the floor die And
- 1:16:44I'm just like, that's fun because she wasn't that big of a part in
- 1:16:47the story in the actual like book, but in the show she has a
- 1:16:51much bigger role. You get to learn more about her in the actual show
- 1:16:56than the book. The book, she's just there and in the in between
- 1:17:00stories because the American gods in between each chapter, they have like a little
- 1:17:04segment in the beginning of the next chapter that talks about another god or another
- 1:17:09deity that's somewhere in America and why those little stories that doesn't really correlate to
- 1:17:14the overall plot was hers and they kind of mentioned her. And then she
- 1:17:18dies later on kind of just off Hilter and I'm like, damn, that
- 1:17:23sucks. I was kind of upset about that too, Yes, very sad.
- 1:17:30Anyway. One of her first stories though, is about her having sex
- 1:17:34with a man. This is gonna get teen, This is the Royalty,
- 1:17:38am I So have you watched You haven't watched the show, right, So
- 1:17:44the show kind of does the same thing as the book did as far as
- 1:17:46like her first appearance she has relations with the man or having sex, and
- 1:17:51he is. Really she's intoxicating in a way. I mean, she's a
- 1:17:59god so love and fertility, so she's very intoxicating and she's like, worship
- 1:18:02me, worship my body, and he does obviously. But then she gets
- 1:18:10larger and she puts this guy's body in her Oh my god. Yeah,
- 1:18:19yeah, she devours him in another way, and he gets absorbed into her
- 1:18:28and he's like floating they describe like he's floating on the cause when it's in
- 1:18:31like an egg space thing, and he kind of just absorbed into her.
- 1:18:38And he's never seen the game out, like he died, like she like
- 1:18:41she that's her sacrifice. He took, she took him, and she you're
- 1:18:47part of me. Now. Yeah, it's a lot. It's very descriptive,
- 1:18:51and I'm like, oh oh oh, and the show shows everything of
- 1:18:58that too, and I'm it's like, oh, I love the first off.
- 1:19:01I love the energy and the imagery of it all. It's lit,
- 1:19:05it's cool, it's weird, it's very weird. Then there's another in between
- 1:19:14story about a gen which gens are genies demons depending on which lore you look
- 1:19:20at. As far as the pre Islamic lore, Yeah, there's a GEN
- 1:19:28running around New York and there's a businessman. Basically, gay sex happens between
- 1:19:36this man and the gen. What's interesting about the gen because they did again
- 1:19:42they did the same thing in the show too, because the gen that's gen
- 1:19:45story shows up too where this businessman is there to sell trinkets and he's not
- 1:19:49doing so hot and he's having a rough time, and he gets very familiar
- 1:19:53with the taxi driver, and the taxi driver and him have sex, gay
- 1:19:58sex, the gay sex, and when they have sex, the gin is
- 1:20:04the top and when he climaxes, the gin leaves the body of the person
- 1:20:17that he is, that he is in and he moves into the other one
- 1:20:25that good sense through his yeah yeah, yeah, yeah, I get it.
- 1:20:32So when the guy, when the businessman at the end of the story
- 1:20:38of the businessman gets up and leaves, the gin is now inside of that
- 1:20:45businessman and he takes on the taxi driver position and gets into the cab and
- 1:20:49drive. And I'm just like, what happens to the taxi driver. I
- 1:20:59don't remember. I think he either the guy either left or he just or
- 1:21:03they kind of indicated that he might have left or disappeared, but they make
- 1:21:08it very apparent that the gen was using that body as like a vessel and
- 1:21:13they moved from one body to the other in that particular way. And I'm
- 1:21:15like, that's that's weird in like an interesting way because the show does the
- 1:21:20same thing. But the show does this weird cgi'ed moment where they're both having
- 1:21:26or the what both men are having sex and they turn into like one of
- 1:21:29these Greek statues and you could see like the see through where like the where
- 1:21:36you can see I'm trying to say it in such a PG way. You
- 1:21:42can see the top penetrating the bottom, and you can see his deck and
- 1:21:48you can see the the climaxing. It's like this gold liquid dust that leads
- 1:21:56one guy and goes to the other, and they show the whole thing of
- 1:22:00how that process works. And I'm like, this is someone had to animate
- 1:22:04that. Someone had to animate that someone took hours of their life to it
- 1:22:13three D animate those two bodies and that god like jizz. Yeah. Yeah,
- 1:22:25I was like, Neil, are you it's straight? You know,
- 1:22:33there's a reason why this show is on Stars because Stars is where you get
- 1:22:36all these really shows. This show, Yeah, yeah, this show has
- 1:22:43sex and violence and ships. You almost kind of have to do it on
- 1:22:45like Stars or show Time or Netflix or something. But I think there was
- 1:22:56a time when HBO was that raunchy. Yeah. Yeah. Unfortunately, the
- 1:23:03show did not finish out the story. They got through three seasons and they
- 1:23:06kind of just ended it or got canceled, and I'm like, come on,
- 1:23:12finish out the story because they ended off if I remember, because I
- 1:23:15didn't watch season three, but I kind of. Johnny, my boyfriend,
- 1:23:19was telling me where they cut off on season three. He got to Lake
- 1:23:24Lakeside and they were doing that storyline where they ended it. So they only
- 1:23:30got like halfway through the book with like the first three seasons. Technically,
- 1:23:35Grantul there's a lot of major changes and inclusions from the show to the book.
- 1:23:41But main bulletpointed, go about halfway halfway through the book when they did
- 1:23:45the end of the show. Is it just one book that they split up
- 1:23:49into three seasons or is it all late? Well, it's one book.
- 1:23:56American Gods is just one book. But they made three seasons and it didn't
- 1:24:00and they didn't and they did not finish the whole story. There was a
- 1:24:03good half of the story that they didn't get to tell because the show got
- 1:24:05canceled. Yeah, so it could. It took the series could have gotten
- 1:24:11another two seasons before it ended. All for one book, there was a
- 1:24:18lot. There was a lot of stuff I didn't even go over on how
- 1:24:24like the system of the New Gods worked and shit, But that's not really
- 1:24:30one. It hit the major bullet points exactly what I did. So,
- 1:24:36yeah, you guys can get the book and read it to hear yourself a
- 1:24:41paper and read it. I read the I did an audio book obviously of
- 1:24:45it, and I did the tenth ten year anniversary edition. And at the
- 1:24:49very end, Neil I think, does the narration for at the very end
- 1:24:55he talks about how he did a part he wrote in Jesus Christ into the
- 1:25:00story. Yeah, and he didn't quite it wasn't there like there wasn't there
- 1:25:08like different versions of Jesus, Like there was like in the Black Jesus,
- 1:25:12Korean Jesus. Yes, so in the show, not really in the book,
- 1:25:15but in the show. I'm all in the book that kind of mentioned
- 1:25:17Jesus, but they never show them in the show Easter because they visit Asara
- 1:25:24on Easter Day and Easter Day when they walk up to her to a little
- 1:25:29mansion or whatnot. You see a bunch of different versions of Jesus, Korean
- 1:25:32Jesus, Mexican Jesus, Black, Jesus, White, Jesus, all these
- 1:25:36this crowd of Jesus' because everyone has their own image of Jesus in their head.
- 1:25:43Yeah, and I'm like, that's interesting. I kind of like what
- 1:25:45they did there. But in the book you never really see Jesus, but
- 1:25:53he talks about the very end of the book. He's like, he did
- 1:25:56write apart with Jesus Christ in it. He just never really thought it fit
- 1:26:01well in the book, so he took it out. Let me see if
- 1:26:05I can find that particular part because I'm trying to remember because he read an
- 1:26:12excerpt of what that part was, and I think it was with the when
- 1:26:15he was on the World Tree for nine days. I think he had interaction
- 1:26:23not with just horrors, but he also with Jesus. I'm trying to see
- 1:26:27if I can find that. Oh. Yeah, and the show. Speaking
- 1:26:30of Jesus. In the show, they had an episode one episode that was
- 1:26:33like part of the first season where they show uh, the Mexican border.
- 1:26:40Yeah, and there's an undocumented Mexican man who was shot and killed at the
- 1:26:45border, and it's they shot Jesus Christ. Oh god, they shot Mexican
- 1:26:51Jesus Christ. Oh my god. Yeah, yeah, I remember. That
- 1:26:56was weird because he was trying to cross. He was killed by a border
- 1:26:59patroled trying across in the United States border. Immediately after saving a man from
- 1:27:03drowning, Jesus gets shot through both his hands and falls to the ground,
- 1:27:09where a tumbleweed rolls over his head, leaving him with a crown of thorn.
- 1:27:15Oh god, right, right, it's very brutal. It's very brutal.
- 1:27:20By the way, I can't I can't seem to find it. But
- 1:27:24he has an interaction with Jesus Christ as he as Jesus kind of gives them
- 1:27:29wisdom, a nice little talking to about wisdom and shit and how the world
- 1:27:33works and everything. It's not really that big of it's not a big part
- 1:27:39of the story, which is why he didn't put it in because he didn't
- 1:27:41think it would necessarily fit anywhere. But if you listen to the audio but
- 1:27:45for the tenth Adversary edition, or get the book itself, I'll actually have
- 1:27:48it at the very end. But yeah, so that's more or less American
- 1:27:55Gods. As far as ratings go, if I were to read this book,
- 1:28:01I mean five out of five, five out of five. The book
- 1:28:08is way better than the show. The book is way better than the show.
- 1:28:13Read the book, reade the book, then watch the show. But
- 1:28:16I will say the show's imagery though. Jeff's kiss it's so good. Oh
- 1:28:24there's American Guys by Neil Gimmon. Nice. Yeah, see it's funny.
- 1:28:33How like it doesn't seem like a long book, but from what I can
- 1:28:38tell, it's a long book. And the fact that they were able to
- 1:28:42make they were able to like spread it out across three seasons, even if
- 1:28:45they didn't actually finish the story. Yeah, it's impressive. Kind of like
- 1:28:49what they did with The Hobbit if you think about it. Yeah, they
- 1:28:53turned in such a The Hobbit was a little book, was it not.
- 1:28:56Yeah, it was a little book. Yeah, it was a little book.
- 1:28:58They just added a lot of like extra characters, like extra shit that
- 1:29:02like didn't even happen in the book and stretched it out. And I mean
- 1:29:09the movies came out great. I don't I had no complaints, but yeah,
