- 0:00Speaker 1: And Football at four is powered by the Inside the
- 0:03Speaker 1: Birds podcast. It is brought to you by the Fanatic
- 0:05Speaker 1: Sports Book at Ocean Casino Resort in Atlantic City. Andrew
- 0:08Speaker 1: to Checko is here today. We'll get his take on
- 0:11Speaker 1: the Eagles offensive coordinator search as that continues. A new
- 0:15Speaker 1: name today. As we told you a little bit earlier,
- 0:17Speaker 1: Declan Doyle. I had a roommate in college. His name
- 0:21Speaker 1: was Declan who happened to be a Bears fan. And
- 0:24Speaker 1: Declan Doyle is the offensive coordinator for the Chicago Bears. Hey,
- 0:28Speaker 1: before we get to Andrew to Checko, let me remind
- 0:30Speaker 1: you it's that time of the year. The Metro Atlantic
- 0:33Speaker 1: Basketball Classic, the biggest high school basketball classic in the country,
- 0:37Speaker 1: is coming to Stockton University in Galloway, January the twenty
- 0:43Speaker 1: ninth through the thirty first to Metro has had some
- 0:47Speaker 1: incredible talent guys like VJ. Edgecombe, Karl Anthony Towns, Kate Cunningham,
- 0:52Speaker 1: Cooper Flag. They all played in this tournament and you
- 0:56Speaker 1: could see the stars of tomorrow right here at Stockton
- 0:59Speaker 1: Universe to the next weekend. For tickets, go to Metro
- 1:03Speaker 1: Classic Basketball dot Com. All right, let's bring in Andrew
- 1:07Speaker 1: to check go and get the latest on what's going
- 1:09Speaker 1: on with the Eagles. As he perceives it as seems
- 1:13Speaker 1: like a lot of people passing on this job, and
- 1:16Speaker 1: the Eagles are widening their search. That Andrew and got
- 1:19Speaker 1: a couple of new names over the last twenty four hours.
- 1:21Speaker 1: And let me get your takeaway on why do you
- 1:24Speaker 1: think some of these more known names, Not that that's
- 1:27Speaker 1: the way you have to go, but why are they
- 1:30Speaker 1: not so attracted to this Philadelphia offensive coordator position.
- 1:35Speaker 2: Well, there's a number of reasons, right, I think, first
- 1:37Speaker 2: and foremost, you have to question the person out that
- 1:40Speaker 2: they're going to be working with. Right the offensive line,
- 1:42Speaker 2: what's the health status is Lane Johnson coming back? Is
- 1:46Speaker 2: aj Brown going to be a part of the twenty
- 1:48Speaker 2: twenty six Philadelphia Eagles. That's a pretty important piece there.
- 1:52Speaker 2: And then if you want to play a certain style,
- 1:54Speaker 2: if you are unsure as to the health of Cam
- 1:57Speaker 2: Jurgen's Landon Dickerson, that's going to really affect the way
- 2:02Speaker 2: that you're able to play offense, that you're able to
- 2:04Speaker 2: run the offense through your vision. Then you have to
- 2:07Speaker 2: wonder about the autonomy piece. Are they going to have
- 2:10Speaker 2: full autonomy to run the offense through their vision. And
- 2:14Speaker 2: I also think the market plays into it, right. I mean,
- 2:17Speaker 2: this is an offensive coordinator and Kevin Petullo at his
- 2:20Speaker 2: house act and I think the fact that this market
- 2:24Speaker 2: is as passionate as it is sometimes it borders on excessive.
- 2:27Speaker 2: And when you egg someone's house like that and you
- 2:31Speaker 2: go toward and you need to start to skew towards abuse,
- 2:34Speaker 2: I mean, that's not normal behavior. And I think that
- 2:38Speaker 2: that you know, a lot of these candidates are very
- 2:40Speaker 2: well aware of how Kevin Patullo was treated, of how
- 2:43Speaker 2: Brian Johnson was treated. Yes, there was two offensive coordinators
- 2:48Speaker 2: who were appointed to head coach and they're able to
- 2:50Speaker 2: advance their careers and Kellen Moore and Shane stike In
- 2:55Speaker 2: and there were also two who were fired after one year.
- 2:57Speaker 2: Brian Johnson, by the way, had a top ten offense.
- 3:00Speaker 2: They were seventh I think in points per game a
- 3:03Speaker 2: little over twenty five and eighth in total offense, which
- 3:07Speaker 2: was roughly three hundred and fifty four yards per game,
- 3:10Speaker 2: and he was ousted. So yeah, I think a lot
- 3:13Speaker 2: of those things factor in, and of course there's the
- 3:15Speaker 2: quarterback factor as well. If you're someone like a Mike
- 3:18Speaker 2: McDaniel who runs a very distinct system. Are you going
- 3:23Speaker 2: to be willing to acquiesce and try to tailor your
- 3:28Speaker 2: offense around a quarterback? And I think someone like in
- 3:32Speaker 2: this case, Justin Herbert would be much more It's much
- 3:35Speaker 2: more of a seamless fit. And that's not to say
- 3:38Speaker 2: that they couldn't have worked here in Philadelphia. There's no
- 3:40Speaker 2: evidence that it would, but there's just as you can see,
- 3:43Speaker 2: there's a lot of reasons.
- 3:44Speaker 1: There is a lot of reasons, and it seems that
- 3:47Speaker 1: Jalen Hurts game gets brought up. Nick Sirianni's name gets
- 3:50Speaker 1: brought up working for the Eagles in the irrationality that
- 3:54Speaker 1: you mentioned, two guys got fired after one year. So
- 3:57Speaker 1: it makes it a very interesting job. What do you
- 3:59Speaker 1: make of some of the names that we're starting to hear?
- 4:02Speaker 1: Matt Naggy, interestingly enough, he was a head coach, got
- 4:06Speaker 1: a team that the playoffs with Mitchell Trubisky, had a
- 4:09Speaker 1: winning record, was the coach of the year, and then
- 4:12Speaker 1: obviously did not work out in Chicago. We lands back
- 4:15Speaker 1: in Kansas City, you got a guy like Dabel who
- 4:17Speaker 1: had not a good head coach.
- 4:19Speaker 3: In New York.
- 4:19Speaker 1: Yet people seem like they would rather Dable over a
- 4:22Speaker 1: guy like Naggy. Then you've got guys who are a
- 4:25Speaker 1: little lesser known. Earlier this morning, Declan Doyle thirty years old,
- 4:31Speaker 1: not even a play caller.
- 4:32Speaker 3: So you're starting to hear guys that are really off
- 4:35Speaker 3: the beaten path. What are these names kind of interests
- 4:38Speaker 3: you the most?
- 4:40Speaker 2: Yeah, you know, I like Matt Naggie. I know that's
- 4:42Speaker 2: an unpopular choice based off of some of what I've seen,
- 4:45Speaker 2: you know, on social media and responses to you know,
- 4:48Speaker 2: you know a post that I made because I actually
- 4:50Speaker 2: had a chance to talk to Matt Naggy last February
- 4:53Speaker 2: during Super Bowl media availability, even asking him specifically about
- 4:57Speaker 2: where he saw Jalen Hurts make the biggest advance in
- 5:00Speaker 2: his game, and he talked about decision making. He clearly
- 5:03Speaker 2: trusted the system his receivers doesn't turn the football over.
- 5:06Speaker 2: I even asked him about Tick Fangio as well, and
- 5:08Speaker 2: some of the challenges he presents to an offense. But
- 5:12Speaker 2: I mean, this is a bright mind. He's learned under
- 5:14Speaker 2: Andy Reid for I think thirteen seasons, and he's held
- 5:18Speaker 2: different roles. Whether that was a quarterback coach, an offensive coordinator,
- 5:20Speaker 2: a head coach of the Bears. As you mentioned, Mike,
- 5:23Speaker 2: he took Mitchell Trubisky to the postseason and I thought
- 5:26Speaker 2: got the most out of him. Now, it was a
- 5:28Speaker 2: limited sample size there, but if you're comparing him to
- 5:32Speaker 2: let's say, Brian Dabele, well, Matt Maggie had a better
- 5:34Speaker 2: head coach, had more success as a head coach than
- 5:37Speaker 2: Brian Dabele, and I would argue that he also had
- 5:39Speaker 2: more success calling plays and being part of the offense
- 5:42Speaker 2: wherever he's gone as well. Of of course, Brian Dabele
- 5:46Speaker 2: had a lot of success with Josh Allen, but Josh
- 5:48Speaker 2: Allen and the Bills the beat went on when he left.
- 5:51Speaker 2: So how much of that was Josh Allen being able
- 5:54Speaker 2: to elevate the offense and how much of it was
- 5:56Speaker 2: Brian Dabele is obviously up for debate. But I think
- 5:58Speaker 2: Matt Maggie's an interesting one and someone who I believe
- 6:01Speaker 2: will do a nice job working with Jalen Hurts and
- 6:05Speaker 2: compatible in the sense that he's just coming from such
- 6:08Speaker 2: a diverse background of different voices and coaches that he's
- 6:12Speaker 2: learned from over the years.
- 6:14Speaker 1: Talking with Andrew to checko football at four and obviously
- 6:18Speaker 1: you know we're going into you know, we're getting into
- 6:20Speaker 1: right around the area. I remember Nick Sirianni was hired
- 6:23Speaker 1: on January twenty fourth. That was my birthday, So I
- 6:26Speaker 1: do remember that January twenty fourth, twenty twenty one.
- 6:29Speaker 3: That will be this weekend. Do they have to rush this?
- 6:32Speaker 3: Do they have to hurry?
- 6:33Speaker 1: I mean, if they're still hanging around, I mean, does
- 6:35Speaker 1: that say maybe they like somebody that's in this games
- 6:38Speaker 1: this weekend or do they not feel an urgency that
- 6:42Speaker 1: they have to hire someone today.
- 6:45Speaker 2: Well, I think they're more so trying to make sure
- 6:48Speaker 2: that they're making their right pick and not rushing into
- 6:51Speaker 2: a decision. Now Mike McDaniel is no longer on a possibility,
- 6:56Speaker 2: Brian Daboll is not going to be a possibility, and
- 6:59Speaker 2: Zach Robinson is no longer going to be a possibility.
- 7:03Speaker 2: And those were all coaches that the Eagles at least
- 7:05Speaker 2: expressed interest in. And so you could look at it
- 7:08Speaker 2: and say the field is shrinking, But I don't get
- 7:11Speaker 2: the sense that there's this urgency where they have to
- 7:14Speaker 2: rush somebody into this role. They're casting a wide net
- 7:17Speaker 2: and I think a lot of that is useful, even
- 7:20Speaker 2: if there's some coaches so you have no intention of
- 7:24Speaker 2: hiring more so that you're trying to gather information and
- 7:27Speaker 2: maybe keep tabs on them in the future for different opportunities.
- 7:31Speaker 2: You mentioned the Bears offensive coordinator Declan Doyle. He's twenty
- 7:35Speaker 2: nine years old and he's never called plays before. That
- 7:38Speaker 2: was Ben Johnson running the show there. So if you're
- 7:41Speaker 2: looking at it through the lens of well, the first
- 7:44Speaker 2: the last two play callers that the Eagles have promoted
- 7:46Speaker 2: were first time play callers with no experience there, Well,
- 7:49Speaker 2: how would this be any different? Of course, Doyle has
- 7:52Speaker 2: a background in learning from Sean Payton, but I have
- 7:55Speaker 2: a feeling that come Week four and there's the acclamation period,
- 7:58Speaker 2: there's going to be a lot of fans that are
- 8:00Speaker 2: complaining about him too. How could they hire a first
- 8:03Speaker 2: time play caller and all that. So, Yeah, that's just
- 8:06Speaker 2: kind of my thoughts as this process continues.
- 8:09Speaker 3: Yeah, and they obviously lost out on Zach Robinson. He
- 8:12Speaker 3: is now in Tampa.
- 8:14Speaker 1: You've got obviously, I don't know that there's a favorite
- 8:19Speaker 1: in the clubhouse out there. I don't know that there's
- 8:21Speaker 1: a guy that's like, man, that's the obvious fit. He
- 8:23Speaker 1: makes a lot of sense. But you talked to Marty
- 8:26Speaker 1: Mortiwig for a piece over at Inside the Birds Andrew
- 8:31Speaker 1: and what does he have to say about Jalen Hurts
- 8:33Speaker 1: and maybe what the perception could be for him of
- 8:38Speaker 1: him for these coordinators.
- 8:41Speaker 2: Yeah, I appreciate you mentioning that you can grab that
- 8:43Speaker 2: on Inside the Birds the podcast and then the videos
- 8:46Speaker 2: on YouTube. It's a two parter. Marty loves Jalen Hurts
- 8:50Speaker 2: and he was very instrumental in helping the Eagles draft
- 8:54Speaker 2: Jalen Hurts. He scouted him, he presented a lot of
- 8:57Speaker 2: information to the coaching staff. Senior consultant was elusively to
- 9:00Speaker 2: work with Jalen Hurts and get him ready in the
- 9:03Speaker 2: event that Carson Wentz Wentz got banged up or whatever
- 9:06Speaker 2: it was, and he just lauded Hurts for his work ethic.
- 9:09Speaker 2: He said he'd be in the building until midnight and
- 9:11Speaker 2: said sleep his secondary and he said it was about
- 9:14Speaker 2: the third day. Because I asked him, I said, you've
- 9:16Speaker 2: worked with the likes of Steve Young, Michael Vick, Donovan McNabb,
- 9:21Speaker 2: all these different coaches, all these different quarterbacks and what
- 9:26Speaker 2: is it about a certain like what are you able
- 9:28Speaker 2: to tell or what are you looking for in a
- 9:30Speaker 2: quarterback that suggests to you that they have what it takes.
- 9:34Speaker 2: And he said it was about the third day of
- 9:35Speaker 2: training camp where he recognized that with Hurts and said
- 9:38Speaker 2: that he keeps advancing his game and he just he
- 9:41Speaker 2: was very He offered glowing endorsements for Jayalen Hurts. So
- 9:46Speaker 2: if you want to hear the backstory in his role
- 9:48Speaker 2: in developing Jalen Hurts, I highly encourage everybody check that out.
- 9:52Speaker 1: Yeah, check that out over at the inside the Birds platforms,
- 9:55Speaker 1: and of course is with us you're taking a look
- 9:57Speaker 1: at everything, you know Jalen Hurts.
- 9:59Speaker 3: Obviously, Chris Long had.
- 10:01Speaker 1: Said on the Rich Eisen Show the other day that
- 10:04Speaker 1: he would like to see a West Coast offense and
- 10:07Speaker 1: that basically hold hurts his feet to the fire here.
- 10:10Speaker 3: You know, if you can't run it, then too bad.
- 10:14Speaker 1: That would you like to see them completely scrap this
- 10:17Speaker 1: and go to something completely foreign to him? Is that
- 10:20Speaker 1: a way that you would like to see them go here?
- 10:23Speaker 3: Moving forward?
- 10:24Speaker 2: Because that was just having a conversation with Jeff Mosher
- 10:26Speaker 2: a couple of days ago about this. For me, yes,
- 10:29Speaker 2: I think it would be necessary to totally scrap it
- 10:33Speaker 2: and try to rebuild this and reimagine this offense because
- 10:37Speaker 2: clearly the NFL has has caught up to the way
- 10:40Speaker 2: the Eagles want to play football. What do you think
- 10:42Speaker 2: there are other teams did in the offseason after the
- 10:44Speaker 2: Eaglish won the Super Bowl? How can they stop this offense?
- 10:47Speaker 2: And how can we make the eaglishs one dimension on
- 10:49Speaker 2: make them uncomfortable? You saw them be able to do
- 10:52Speaker 2: that too great seasons, So I tend to agree. Said
- 10:55Speaker 2: it was Chris Long who said this.
- 10:57Speaker 3: Yep, he was on the Rich Eigen Show on.
- 11:00Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, I agree with that. But realistically, if you're
- 11:04Speaker 2: in a win now mode and there's urgency to continue
- 11:07Speaker 2: this this and keep this window open, I think probably
- 11:11Speaker 2: best case scenario is you're marrying the offensive codinator and
- 11:15Speaker 2: his concepts and principles with some of the things that
- 11:18Speaker 2: the Eagles do well and trying to find an ideal
- 11:22Speaker 2: blend for that. But if it were me, I would,
- 11:24Speaker 2: you know, rip out the foundation and try to re
- 11:27Speaker 2: establish a new one. And that is becoming more West
- 11:30Speaker 2: Coast based, timing based, middle of the Field throws a
- 11:33Speaker 2: more rhythmic style offense, and you know those are things
- 11:38Speaker 2: that you know Hurts that will do whatever it takes
- 11:40Speaker 2: when so you have to push through those those challenges
- 11:43Speaker 2: and potential growing pains that could accompany that. For the
- 11:46Speaker 2: Eagles to ultimately grow and evolve as an offense, I
- 11:49Speaker 2: think something drastic has to happen and a new system
- 11:52Speaker 2: needs to be in place. But that's just my opinion.
- 11:55Speaker 1: Yeah, no, I think a lot of people kind of
- 11:56Speaker 1: agree with you. But then there is the whole notion
- 11:59Speaker 1: of that at they have kind of scaled this offense
- 12:02Speaker 1: back to fit Jalen Hurts strength, So you kind of
- 12:05Speaker 1: have a you know, I can understand where candidates are
- 12:08Speaker 1: kind of confused on what this offense might be. They
- 12:12Speaker 1: have to figure out is Aj Brown gonna be here?
- 12:14Speaker 1: What's Lane Johnson's future? Do I have to call Nick
- 12:17Speaker 1: Sirianni's plays or can I call my own?
- 12:19Speaker 2: Now?
- 12:20Speaker 1: A lot of reporting has been Andrew that you know
- 12:23Speaker 1: you'll get autonomy here, and what does that mean to
- 12:27Speaker 1: the offensive play caller with Jalen Hurts? Does Jalen Hurts
- 12:30Speaker 1: want to run the stuff that I bring in here?
- 12:32Speaker 1: So I guess you can see why this is a
- 12:35Speaker 1: very perplexing situation for a newcomer. Or do you not
- 12:38Speaker 1: see that and say, hey, I take this job one
- 12:41Speaker 1: hundred percent right off the bat if it's offered to me.
- 12:45Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, I think there's a lot of questions
- 12:46Speaker 2: that have to be asked. But it's a high profile
- 12:48Speaker 2: organization that have an owner who's going to do whatever
- 12:50Speaker 2: it takes to continue this winning trend. But that's not
- 12:54Speaker 2: to say that you're you're not going into it with
- 12:56Speaker 2: some questions. And we talked about the offensive line that's
- 12:58Speaker 2: the star of the show for the offense and if
- 13:00Speaker 2: they're not able to if there's there's health concerns, well
- 13:04Speaker 2: you're gonna have a really tough time playing the style
- 13:06Speaker 2: of the Eagles want to play. And I think if
- 13:09Speaker 2: you're the OC you're you're telling Jalen Hurt, this is
- 13:11Speaker 2: what we're doing, this is what we're going to do
- 13:13Speaker 2: because we have to move away a little bit from
- 13:16Speaker 2: some of the previous ways and iteration of the offense.
- 13:19Speaker 2: And the offense was was structured through the eyes of
- 13:23Speaker 2: Nick Sirianni to tailor to the strength of his quarterback.
- 13:27Speaker 2: And obviously there's your your wing. You're taking into consideration
- 13:31Speaker 2: what he likes to do route so that he likes
- 13:33Speaker 2: to see run and and all that. But I think
- 13:36Speaker 2: the next offensive coordinator, in order to really head this
- 13:39Speaker 2: thing in the right direction, they need to be able
- 13:42Speaker 2: to to take full control and have their fingerprints on
- 13:46Speaker 2: the offense. And if that means being comfortable being uncomfortable
- 13:50Speaker 2: for the quarterback or for whomever, I think that's necessary.
- 13:54Speaker 2: And I think Jalen Hurst deserves a little bit of
- 13:57Speaker 2: credit here because everybody assumes he can can't do this
- 14:00Speaker 2: or you can't do that. Well, this would be the
- 14:02Speaker 2: opportunity to really be able to have something to base
- 14:06Speaker 2: that off of and trying something different, implementing it and
- 14:09Speaker 2: then same where it goes.
- 14:11Speaker 1: Yeah, Cliff Kingsbury, no interview up to this point here.
- 14:16Speaker 1: Charlie Weis Junior, heard his name, Bobby Slowick. I guess
- 14:20Speaker 1: whoever else is out there. We'll see what ends up
- 14:22Speaker 1: happening here. But obviously there are other candidates outside of
- 14:27Speaker 1: the ones that have been already connected to the team.
- 14:30Speaker 1: We'll see where this goes. Before we get you out
- 14:32Speaker 1: of here. We were talking earlier this week with Jeff
- 14:35Speaker 1: and Andrew about excuse me, an Adam about the defense
- 14:39Speaker 1: and what this defense might look like moving forward, and
- 14:43Speaker 1: we come to the conclusion that they got some questions
- 14:46Speaker 1: on this to you, as much as they need the
- 14:48Speaker 1: coordinator and this offense needs to get jump started. They
- 14:50Speaker 1: got to figure out you bring Jalen Phillips back, what's
- 14:52Speaker 1: going on with na Kobe Dean, you got to get
- 14:54Speaker 1: a corner opposite Quinian Mitchell. You've got to figure out
- 14:57Speaker 1: what you're doing at the safety spot here. Defense is
- 15:00Speaker 1: also got to be looked at this offseason, correct.
- 15:05Speaker 2: Yeah, Look, the pendrome is going to be swinging here, Mike,
- 15:08Speaker 2: because there's so much money invested in the offense and
- 15:11Speaker 2: now the Eagles are going to have to make some
- 15:13Speaker 2: tough decisions defensively and start allocating a lot of their
- 15:16Speaker 2: resources into that side of the ball. That's signing Cooper
- 15:19Speaker 2: de Gene, Quinnon, Mitchell, potentially Jalen Phillips, Jalen Carter of course,
- 15:24Speaker 2: and Jalen Carter, by the way, didn't they well in
- 15:26Speaker 2: the postseason game. I think there's some concern there about
- 15:30Speaker 2: the shoulder, the shoulders, I should say, and I'll be
- 15:33Speaker 2: keeping an eye on seeing if he's going to revisit it,
- 15:35Speaker 2: which you know, when he returned he said that he
- 15:37Speaker 2: believes that that's something he's going to have to revisit
- 15:39Speaker 2: in the offseason. That's a pretty considerable piece there. But
- 15:43Speaker 2: I think the edge rusher group, I don't know if
- 15:45Speaker 2: Eagles are going to feel comfortable going into a season
- 15:48Speaker 2: again with jaylex Han and Nolan Smith as their top
- 15:52Speaker 2: two edge rusher. Jalen Phillips, I should say, did a
- 15:56Speaker 2: really nice job and the sack numbers may not reflect it,
- 15:59Speaker 2: but pressure off the edge pretty consistently setting the edge
- 16:03Speaker 2: with authority and violence and just complimenting what the Eagles
- 16:06Speaker 2: already had there. He gives you a player who can
- 16:09Speaker 2: handle that volume of snaps and allows someone like a
- 16:12Speaker 2: Nolan Smith to maybe become that third age rusher. That's
- 16:15Speaker 2: really important. And then you mentioned to Kobe Dean, it's
- 16:18Speaker 2: a luxury to have three starting caliber off ball linebackers,
- 16:21Speaker 2: it's not a necessity. And the whole thought process of
- 16:24Speaker 2: drafting jahat Campbell is that he would eventually be able
- 16:26Speaker 2: to undertake a role as a starter opposite Zach Baughn.
- 16:30Speaker 2: So I would have to imagine Mike that that would
- 16:32Speaker 2: be the direction that they had there.
- 16:33Speaker 1: All right, Andrew to check O and the guys over
- 16:35Speaker 1: the Inside of the Birds podcasts. We shift into off
- 16:38Speaker 1: season mode and we'll have it all covered for you here.
- 16:41Speaker 1: During Football at forty you get check out the Inside
- 16:43Speaker 1: the Birds platform, the podcast in the website with the
