Transcript
- 0:02SPEAKER_01: Hi guys, welcome back to Facebook.
- 0:05SPEAKER_01: This is your most episode.
- 0:12SPEAKER_01: Sexual Health Awareness Month.
- 0:14SPEAKER_01: And I know that's a very important topic right now, especially with all of the changes that have occurred in this landscape.
- 0:20SPEAKER_01: Um, when it comes to our sexual health species, women, and um, things that we should, you know, just I guess think about now more so than we did before, especially with a lot of the political stuff that's been going on.
- 0:31SPEAKER_01: I've been really excited to interview more brands that are, you know, gearing up and leading the way in this, you know, area of wellness.
- 0:39SPEAKER_01: So I don't want to rant too much, but I want to introduce you guys to the co-founder of uh Playground, which I'm excited to learn about the brand with you, um, Catherine McGee.
- 0:48SPEAKER_01: Welcome to the show, Catherine.
- 0:49SPEAKER_01: Thank you so much for coming on.
- 0:51SPEAKER_00: Thank you.
- 0:52SPEAKER_00: I'm so excited to be here and um especially uh in during September Sexual Health Month.
- 0:58SPEAKER_01: Yeah, no, I'm really excited, and I I really, you know, can't wait to talk because I think this is an area of wellness that we just don't get to talk about, you know, and it's not enough, at least from my understanding.
- 1:09SPEAKER_01: And uh I can't wait to dive into that, but I really want to learn all about you and your career and what led to the creation of playground.
- 1:16SPEAKER_01: And if you guys, you know, walk us down memory lane, that'd be great.
- 1:20SPEAKER_00: Certainly so maybe similar to a number of your guests here.
- 1:25SPEAKER_00: I actually come from the beauty category.
- 1:28SPEAKER_00: I worked in this space for close to 20 years, started out at L'Oreal in New York City, and then moved to the West Coast and worked at uh bare essence, bare minerals, but they used to call it bare essentials in the um early days of that brand, and had the great fortune of really being part of the development of um a fast growing and exciting company that even back then, you know, we were we were already starting to focus on better ingredients in cosmetics.
- 2:02SPEAKER_00: I uh also was the vice president of marketing at Rodan and Fields, and I worked at a couple of other great cosmetic and skincare brands as well.
- 2:14SPEAKER_00: So, you know, but what I like to say about myself is that I love creating aspirational products for women, uh, the products that we put on our body and on our skin.
- 2:24SPEAKER_00: Um, it it's so connected to how we feel about ourselves.
- 2:28SPEAKER_00: And I I love and feel confident.
- 2:32SPEAKER_00: Um, and then a couple years ago, I started really looking at the sexual wellness category and in particular in the personal lubricant space, and it was so different than what we experience walking down the aisles of Ulta or Sephora, where we have all these great products developed for ourselves that we you know we're excited to use.
- 2:57SPEAKER_00: And that's just not that was just not what was happening.
- 3:01SPEAKER_00: Uh, we've actually spent a lot of time speaking to women, conducted a lot of surveys, and what we the kind of biggest thing we heard about was that this product category makes women feel like something is wrong with them.
- 3:17SPEAKER_00: They actually feel like they they must be broken or have a problem to be fixed, and they feel ashamed.
- 3:25SPEAKER_00: And that's just and we, you know, so myself and my business partners, you know, we just couldn't stand around and ignore that.
- 3:33SPEAKER_00: And we wanted to use all of our experience to to make that change.
- 3:39SPEAKER_01: I love that you said that.
- 3:41SPEAKER_01: I love that you said that it's something that is like it's not something that we talk about with pride as women, you know what I mean?
- 3:47SPEAKER_01: And we should be able to do that.
- 3:48SPEAKER_01: And I love that you guys are in this area of wellness, but I I mean, obviously, I'm I want to ask you, you know, how was it for you, you know, just entering this, you know, area of sexual wellness, like as a product category?
- 4:01SPEAKER_01: I mean, was that like scary to you?
- 4:03SPEAKER_01: Like, how was the initial like feeling that you had before you jumped in?
- 4:08SPEAKER_00: That's a wonderful, that's a great question.
- 4:11SPEAKER_00: I, you know, I think because I come at it truly from a category and an industry perspective, and I can lean on my background of doing that analysis there and really talking to the customers in that space.
- 4:25SPEAKER_00: I did look at it initially as an analytical exercise.
- 4:30SPEAKER_00: However, I will tell you how many strange and weird looks and responses that I received for, you know, while I was developing the product.
- 4:40SPEAKER_00: And even until the point I launched the product, uh, you know, I actually didn't even tell my own parents and my brother until about two weeks before the launch because, you know, I just I didn't necessarily feel ashamed about it.
- 4:54SPEAKER_00: I just knew people wouldn't understand it until they actually saw, you know, our our approach to it and how passionate we were in making bringing something to market that was so different and helping to change that narrative.
- 5:10SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I mean, I totally get it though.
- 5:12SPEAKER_01: Like you don't want anyone to jinx it.
- 5:14SPEAKER_01: Like, even though you're confident, you know what I mean?
- 5:16SPEAKER_01: There's still like this, I think people get nervous about sexual wellness, you know, and I don't know why either, because it's such an important category, you know, but I hear you.
- 5:25SPEAKER_01: Like it's like you don't want to, you don't want to put your baby out there, you know, even though you're confident and you know why you're doing it.
- 5:32SPEAKER_01: I get it.
- 5:32SPEAKER_01: But I mean, it's so interesting, right?
- 5:34SPEAKER_01: I mean, because at the end of the day, it's a huge category of wellness.
- 5:39SPEAKER_01: And that's where I'm really, really um curious, you know, like what was your like initial thought about, you know, how you wanted to evolve this space and what you really wanted to bring?
- 5:49SPEAKER_01: I mean, I'm sure like when you were like blueprinting this out, uh just like some overall thoughts, you know, you you must have had those.
- 5:55SPEAKER_00: So right.
- 5:56SPEAKER_00: And then just to go back to the comment that you made, like why is sexual wellness still filled with these feelings of shame, right?
- 6:06SPEAKER_00: And and you know, I looked, I looked to looked back decades, and this there's just so many societal attitudes that we were raised with that, you know, are deeply ingrained feelings of shame.
- 6:19SPEAKER_00: And for some reason that's been associated with sex, which is by the way, something that every human on the planet has done for generations and decades and millennials.
- 6:29SPEAKER_00: So it is so interesting how we've connected um sex with shame.
- 6:34SPEAKER_00: And and what I'm really excited about though is like I finally feel like that is changing and changing in a healthy way.
- 6:43SPEAKER_00: And why I love the term sexual wellness, because the more research that we've conducted, particularly the years leading up to the launch, the more we are firm believers that sex is an essential part of our overall wellness.
- 6:57SPEAKER_00: Um, and it makes sense, right?
- 6:58SPEAKER_00: Like we as a women in particular have babies and have periods and go through menopause.
- 7:03SPEAKER_00: And if those things aren't going well, it 100% affects our wellness.
- 7:09SPEAKER_00: Um, and then of course, the relationship in the bedroom with our partner is a huge impact on our well-being.
- 7:15SPEAKER_00: So I love and we really focus on this category as a wellness category.
- 7:23SPEAKER_01: I love that.
- 7:23SPEAKER_01: I love everything uh what you said just now really resonates with me because you know, it always baffles my mind that people are so I mean, I I'm Indian, so I grew up in a very like, you know, conservative family.
- 7:36SPEAKER_01: And even the culture, the Indian culture is very conservative.
- 7:39SPEAKER_01: And I used to always have this mindset, you know, mindset like kind of put on me, right?
- 7:45SPEAKER_01: Even growing up in in the US, like it was this, no, you have to, you know, be very, you know, conserved.
- 7:51SPEAKER_01: You have to be very like mindful of how you put yourself out there.
- 7:54SPEAKER_01: You don't want anyone to even think that you have sex, don't even talk about it.
- 7:58SPEAKER_01: Like it was just crazy.
- 7:59SPEAKER_01: And I and I looked around and I always just think I'm like, is it just me or is it my other friends as well, like from different races and backgrounds?
- 8:06SPEAKER_01: But I realized quickly, especially as a woman, it's everybody.
- 8:09SPEAKER_01: We're all programmed in a weird way to be like that.
- 8:12SPEAKER_01: And I just cannot understand, like, especially the older we get, I feel like, especially as women, we we aren't come into this understanding of like, what is there to be ashamed of?
- 8:21SPEAKER_01: That's our body.
- 8:22SPEAKER_01: It's like literally how I came to existence was through sex.
- 8:25SPEAKER_01: So what you know, for us to put this big barrier there, I mean, it's just it's very dated at this point, especially now, you know, in 2023.
- 8:33SPEAKER_01: It's just like, I just can't wrap my head around it.
- 8:36SPEAKER_01: But I mean, I'm I'm really, you know, huge hats off to you for for being like a leader and doing something about it because we need more people to be doing that.
- 8:44SPEAKER_01: So I'm really excited that you you launched uh Playground because it's a really interesting and fun category.
- 8:49SPEAKER_01: And um, I I think my next question is really uh along those lines of like what excites you the most about being part of this, you know, female-owned company, doing something that is so proactive for women, especially, um, and pushing this conversation forward.
- 9:04SPEAKER_00: Absolutely.
- 9:05SPEAKER_00: So two things.
- 9:07SPEAKER_00: One is really for us, all the products that we develop is at the intersection of pleasure and health, right?
- 9:16SPEAKER_00: Because what what we've learned is that you know, even with our products, there are true health benefits of that, which we can go into.
- 9:26SPEAKER_00: And to be able to create products that will help women feel confident in the bedroom, increase their sexual pleasure, but really help them in so many healthy ways.
- 9:39SPEAKER_00: That is something that we're really, really excited to do.
- 9:42SPEAKER_00: And then, second to that is to your point, like how do we, what are the messages that we can share to change everybody's minds and mentality?
- 9:52SPEAKER_00: You know, when, you know, and and we're I see it every day.
- 9:54SPEAKER_00: Like one of the things that we were most excited about is how do we create a bottle and a brand and a product that feels like your favorite beauty product, right?
- 10:04SPEAKER_00: So that we can kind of strip away these ideas that we had and enter into this new and fresh conversation.
- 10:10SPEAKER_00: And we love having those fresh conversations.
- 10:12SPEAKER_00: And we we want to do it in a very sort of girlfriend and fun kind of uh way, just like you and I are doing it right now.
- 10:19SPEAKER_00: You know, we say we're up for fun, down for anything.
- 10:21SPEAKER_00: But what we really say is like we champion every woman to invest in their sexual experiences because it improves their libido and their health and their relationships.
- 10:32SPEAKER_00: And so excited to, you know, be able to have conversations like that like this with you and open the floodgates for more of it.
- 10:42SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I love that.
- 10:43SPEAKER_01: I I really love that.
- 10:44SPEAKER_01: And yeah, I I really like that you said like just talking like just two girlfriends, because honestly, when I started Security Anarchy, that was like the whole idea.
- 10:53SPEAKER_01: You know what I mean?
- 10:53SPEAKER_01: It was just talking about wellness.
- 10:55SPEAKER_01: Like it's like we need we don't do that enough as consumers.
- 10:58SPEAKER_01: And I don't know, you know, uh with you, but like I'm I'm 36 years old and I grew up in the time of you know, magazines.
- 11:03SPEAKER_01: I'm total magazine girl.
- 11:05SPEAKER_01: I remember, you know, calling my friends after school and we would talk about everything, and it was like such a it was a great thing, right?
- 11:12SPEAKER_01: Growing up with that and like growing up with this feeling of like share everything with your friends and talk it out and and you know, understand.
- 11:19SPEAKER_01: And, you know, I feel like now we're in this digital age where people have kind of lost that personal touch.
- 11:25SPEAKER_01: And so to be able to have these conversations, like it's really meaningful for all of us to kind of sit down sometimes and just go, well, what do I think about sexual awareness?
- 11:35SPEAKER_01: What like what is my understanding of lube?
- 11:37SPEAKER_01: What do I know about sex and what you know, what are questions I might have?
- 11:41SPEAKER_01: I mean, it's something that I think is a very valid question to ask, not only yourself, but also like, you know, the newer generations, I see more of like there's not a lot of conversation going on, you know?
- 11:52SPEAKER_01: It's like a lot of advertising is going on, you know, from brands, but the kids are not sitting down and having this one-on-one talk from what I'm seeing.
- 12:01SPEAKER_01: And so it just makes me even more interested, right?
- 12:04SPEAKER_01: Because I feel like when you create products that are friendly and they're approachable and they're you, you know, you can come to them as a consumer and feel like, okay, I'm not threatened by this and I'm not scared.
- 12:15SPEAKER_01: It it opens that up, right?
- 12:16SPEAKER_01: And it opens up those possibilities.
- 12:18SPEAKER_01: And that's where you guys just really stand out to me, you know, as a consumer.
- 12:21SPEAKER_01: Is this the packaging is so fun, you know, and it's so easy to like just get into it and not feel like you're, I don't know, buying that sterile white bottle, you know what I mean?
- 12:31SPEAKER_01: Like from the drugstore.
- 12:33SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 12:33SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 12:34SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 12:34SPEAKER_00: I I I go back to my bare minerals days.
- 12:37SPEAKER_00: And one of the things that was so special about that brand at the time is you could walk into a woman's bathroom anywhere and pull out that that mineral case and have a conversation right there.
- 12:49SPEAKER_00: And I mean, how many times have we all gone into a a bathroom and started talking about makeup?
- 12:54SPEAKER_00: And that is what we would love to ignite in this category for the first time.
- 13:01SPEAKER_00: And the reason is not because, of course, it's fun and all of those things, but because it's really, really healthy, healthy and beneficial uh to have these conversations.
- 13:10SPEAKER_00: Um, and and so I love that you that you know, we think about the approachability and making it like very intimidating, and maybe we can spark that conversation with the fun product and then go straight into wellness.
- 13:23SPEAKER_00: I think wellness is the key to really breaking this open.
- 13:28SPEAKER_00: You know, sex is the last frontier of wellness.
- 13:33SPEAKER_00: We've thought about it from a fitness perspective, we've thought about it from an anti-aging perspective, uh, but then really our uh, you know, health, healthy experiences in the bedroom and connections with our partners is really, really a vital part of wellness too.
- 13:49SPEAKER_00: And and I think, I think if you're not comfortable talking about it in other ways, then this is a great place to start.
- 13:56SPEAKER_01: Absolutely.
- 13:57SPEAKER_01: And you know how they always say, like, um, you know, when you have really good sex, you're just like glowing from the inside out.
- 14:04SPEAKER_01: Like I grew up hearing that.
- 14:06SPEAKER_01: It's true.
- 14:07SPEAKER_01: I mean, you're you're just a happy person when you're like your sex life is good.
- 14:10SPEAKER_01: I mean, at the end of the day, you know, we don't, you're so right in everything you said.
- 14:15SPEAKER_01: We do not look at sexual wellness from the the lens of true overall wellness, you know, it's like the whole mental health aspect that comes in too.
- 14:25SPEAKER_01: I mean, think about all these apps now, right, for meditation and stuff.
- 14:29SPEAKER_01: It just makes you wonder, it's like, you know, we are striving as human beings to be more like calm and you know, mindful of how we're feeling and and all these things, like anti-anxiety, anti-depression.
- 14:41SPEAKER_01: But one of the strongest mechanisms we have built into us is our sex drive and what we experience, like all of the, you know, endorphers that are released, all of the things that happen after you, you know, uh are engaging in sex.
- 14:55SPEAKER_01: Like that's a real medical and physiological phenomena.
- 14:58SPEAKER_01: And I don't think there should be any shame in talking about that or even shouting it from the rooftops.
- 15:02SPEAKER_01: I mean, it's a it's really is about wellness, like you said.
- 15:05SPEAKER_00: So there should there should be no shame in our sexual wellness game.
- 15:10SPEAKER_00: Uh and you know, this because of what we just chatted about, the inability to talk about it, um, the that all of these things has really uh if you know, for example, we don't have a ton of um history of investment into sexual health studies for women.
- 15:29SPEAKER_00: It's been really underinvested in, you know, we, you know, uh our chief sexologist, Dr.
- 15:36SPEAKER_00: Emily Morris, talks about how that, you know, 50 years ago they didn't even know the clitoris existed, and then even 10 years ago they didn't they didn't understand it very well.
- 15:46SPEAKER_00: And so we're just, I think, you know, but I I I would say the positive side of this is that there is more investment finally going into all things women's sexual health and sexual wellness.
- 15:58SPEAKER_00: And um, we're just really excited to be part of that.
- 16:02SPEAKER_00: Uh, there's a lot of uh studies and research that shows true anti-aging and youth and um benefits to keeping up healthy sexual intercourse.
- 16:16SPEAKER_00: So all these things are quite exciting.
- 16:18SPEAKER_00: We're in a group, I think we're in the beginning of some exciting time in the space.
- 16:22SPEAKER_01: Yeah, like real, like it's really shifting.
- 16:24SPEAKER_01: Like the industry is shifting.
- 16:25SPEAKER_01: And I I really I love that you you're doing this.
- 16:29SPEAKER_01: I I really do.
- 16:30SPEAKER_01: I mean, this is such a good time, like you said, but also like I'm so excited about the future because you're paving the way for so many brands.
- 16:37SPEAKER_01: I mean, right now, I I still don't get why we're not talking about actual, you know, when it comes to just even health, right?
- 16:45SPEAKER_01: You look at it from like the lens of health.
- 16:47SPEAKER_01: As a doctor, I can tell you women, you know, I'm sure you already know this, but obviously for all the listeners, women deal with, you know, vaginal dryness and all of these things that come with age naturally.
- 16:58SPEAKER_01: We go through this every single one of us at some point in our life.
- 17:02SPEAKER_01: And, you know, we look at lube, right?
- 17:04SPEAKER_01: And and this category, and we're thinking of, you know, well, some people need it and some people don't.
- 17:09SPEAKER_01: And I'm I'm sitting here, I'm like, actually, that's a lie too, because I think a lot of the times people don't report when they're using it.
- 17:16SPEAKER_01: It's not reported in studies, it's not reported in surveys.
- 17:19SPEAKER_01: And then we have this skewed understanding, right?
- 17:22SPEAKER_01: Of like how many people, obviously, there are giants out there that are still selling these products and they've been the giants and monopolizing it for a long time.
- 17:30SPEAKER_01: But like, it's like there's a need for this.
- 17:32SPEAKER_01: You know what I mean?
- 17:33SPEAKER_01: There's a real need.
- 17:34SPEAKER_01: And so, yeah, I think it's a really interesting conversation.
- 17:37SPEAKER_01: But, you know, one thing I I want to ask you really is about this, you know, obviously sexual health awareness month.
- 17:44SPEAKER_01: And, you know, to really kind of dive into that, I think it's important to embrace sexual health education and advocacy.
- 17:52SPEAKER_01: And so, you know, in terms of playground's role in all of this, like how do you see that?
- 17:57SPEAKER_01: Like, what is your vision of promoting sexual health awareness and supporting people, individuals on their own personal journeys for overall wellness?
- 18:05SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I mean, the our, you know, I said our broader mission is is really to turn shame into confidence and encourage everybody to learn about and improve their sexual experiences.
- 18:20SPEAKER_00: Uh, and so that's that's something we talk about, but it also starts with our product and then you brought up the personal lubricant category.
- 18:27SPEAKER_00: You know, the the category has never had a health focus on it before, when in in fact it's incredibly impactful on women's health.
- 18:37SPEAKER_00: So to your point, six out of 10 women um have vaginal dryness, um, six out of 10 women get urinary tract infections, 80% correlated with sexual intercourse, irritation, all kinds of issues, which can um and a really great, well-developed lubricant can uh can avoid, you can avoid all of those type of things.
- 19:05SPEAKER_00: And you also brought up something else.
- 19:07SPEAKER_00: Like people get very embarrassed about this word dry, but that's associated with estrogen.
- 19:12SPEAKER_00: And then it's not just menopause where your estrogen changes.
- 19:16SPEAKER_00: Postpartum, your estrogen drops as much as in menopause, particularly if you're breastfeeding.
- 19:22SPEAKER_00: And then the other thing we forget is like we have periods every month.
- 19:26SPEAKER_00: So our hormones just naturally go up every month, up and down.
- 19:31SPEAKER_00: And so, yeah, it's it's really an it's a conversation that historically, for whatever reason, is associated only with, you know, those those who are more mature, but it's not.
- 19:44SPEAKER_00: And what I do love though is what we're really seeing is we have a huge, call it like 20-year-old population because they're not using a lube to offset dryness.
- 19:56SPEAKER_00: They're saying, whoa, this makes my experience in the bedroom a lot more fun.
- 20:00SPEAKER_00: And I just want to bring more fun things into the bedroom.
- 20:04SPEAKER_00: So I do think, yes, there's a whole health and wellness focus on it.
- 20:08SPEAKER_00: You know, we've we've put ingredients in our in our product that is really about creating and supporting vaginal health.
- 20:18SPEAKER_00: We have ingredient four ingredients that have never been used in any lubricant, you know, vitamin E, for example, and hyaluronic acid are great superfoods for your skin.
- 20:27SPEAKER_00: They lock in hydration and improve moisture.
- 20:31SPEAKER_00: Um, and it does the same for the vagina.
- 20:33SPEAKER_00: So, you know, we can go into like our formulation was truly about how do we improve and protect the most intimate areas of our life.
- 20:43SPEAKER_00: Um, and then also destigmatize this entire conversation.
- 20:49SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I love that though.
- 20:50SPEAKER_01: I mean, I think that you guys are so unique and that you actually uh that was my next question for you was the formula because it's very unique, you know, your actual product itself and for everyone listen, you can feel it.
- 21:01SPEAKER_01: Even like if you're rubbing it between your fingers, you can feel that it just it feels different, the normal loop.
- 21:05SPEAKER_01: Like I've I've I've never felt like it, you know, I've never bought these kind of products and felt like they were very nourishing to the touch, you know, even like right off the bat, feeling it.
- 21:15SPEAKER_01: And I I found that to be extremely unique about your products, that it's you can tell immediately that you've really put that like skincare level thought into this, you know what I mean?
- 21:24SPEAKER_01: Like in in terms of like the actual formula.
- 21:26SPEAKER_01: So yeah, I mean, I don't know if you can share like the four ingredients you were talking about, but vitamin E, hyaluronic, and um like what else should you tell?
- 21:33SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 21:34SPEAKER_00: We have we have a couple of great, but I love the word that you used as nourishing because we think of this as skincare for the vagina.
- 21:42SPEAKER_00: And you know, pH balance is really, really important.
- 21:46SPEAKER_00: I don't think, you know, going back to education, I don't think most women understand really, really why why that's important, right?
- 21:53SPEAKER_00: We have a pH balance, our the right pH balance is around 4.5, and it's fairly acidic.
- 22:00SPEAKER_00: The reason why it's acidic is number one, it prevents the growth of bacteria and yeast.
- 22:07SPEAKER_00: And so that is what causes yeast infections and other things.
- 22:12SPEAKER_00: And so I, you know, again, like using these products are think about your skin and keeping it moisturized and hydrated.
- 22:20SPEAKER_00: Not only does that do that with the vagina, but it also keeps it healthy and prevents these types of health challenges that we have in our intimate area.
- 22:31SPEAKER_00: And so we kind of approached it that way.
- 22:33SPEAKER_00: You know, we knew we looked at the category and we said, whoa, what do people think?
- 22:37SPEAKER_00: Well, they think it's sticky, they they think it smells bad, and they're kind of embarrassed to like bring it in the bedroom.
- 22:44SPEAKER_00: So Playground is a water-based lubricant that we use a we use a bamboo extract that makes this more silky and long-lasting than just your pure play water-based lubricant.
- 23:00SPEAKER_00: Uh, we have three ingredients that are great for moisture hydration and pH, vitamin E, hyaluronic acid, and citric acid.
- 23:10SPEAKER_00: The citric acid we use is actually the same pH as your as your vagina.
- 23:16SPEAKER_00: And so it really helps to maintain that, particularly during intercourse when you know, when sperm enters your body, it really can upset your page balance because it is it's alkaline versus acidic.
- 23:31SPEAKER_00: So, you know, again, there are real, real benefits for um using the product, and we've thought about it from an ingredient perspective.
- 23:40SPEAKER_00: And then we also have this really unique adaptogen complex of ashwagonda, horny goatweed, and black kohosh that are just historically known to help lift the libido.
- 23:53SPEAKER_00: Um, so that's a little bit about a formula.
- 23:55SPEAKER_00: We're really excited about it, but I think the most important thing is that, you know, if date night has an essence of champagne and vanilla, and mini escape has an essence of coconut and sandalwood.
- 24:06SPEAKER_00: And, you know, we we want to inspire women to try these products like they would a lip gloss or a mascara.
- 24:13SPEAKER_01: I love that though.
- 24:14SPEAKER_01: I I like I like that you guys have like really put in that, you know, that extra punch because I let's be real, you know, I you brought up a really, really important topic, and that's pH.
- 24:25SPEAKER_01: And I kid you not, I've had so many conversations about like vulvar health and you know what I mean, like all these like other topics, but nobody wants to talk about the vagina.
- 24:34SPEAKER_01: Like, no one.
- 24:35SPEAKER_01: Like, I swear it's like we go everywhere except the vagina.
- 24:38SPEAKER_01: You know what I mean?
- 24:38SPEAKER_01: It's like it's important to talk about vulvar health.
- 24:41SPEAKER_01: I love it.
- 24:42SPEAKER_01: Don't get me wrong, but vaginal pH is huge, like it's huge.
- 24:47SPEAKER_01: And I think that a lot of times women like they get confused when they have things like yeast infections or even just bacterial vaginosis.
- 24:54SPEAKER_01: Like you get confused as to like you feel dirty and you feel like you're doing something wrong.
- 24:59SPEAKER_01: And you're not, it's just a pH imbalance.
- 25:01SPEAKER_01: That's all it is.
- 25:02SPEAKER_01: And you know, at the end of the day, you know what's crazy?
- 25:06SPEAKER_01: And you brought up such a such an important point was the uh fact that, you know, sperm and it's alkaline.
- 25:12SPEAKER_01: And that's so important because women don't know that a lot of times, especially young women, they don't understand that if that is the case and you're like, you know, uh experiencing that altered pH down there, it's because of your spouse or your significant other or your partner.
- 25:27SPEAKER_01: It's not because you've done something wrong or that you're washing the wrong way, or you know, all these other things that come up in our minds.
- 25:34SPEAKER_01: It's like we're so quick to blame ourselves.
- 25:36SPEAKER_01: That's my point.
- 25:37SPEAKER_01: And so that's where I feel like, you know what I mean?
- 25:40SPEAKER_01: It's a huge topic.
- 25:41SPEAKER_01: I mean, it's it gets so multifactorial.
- 25:43SPEAKER_01: And I feel like we could talk about it for days, but just the fact that you guys have thought about that, I mean, you're absolutely right in that if you're using like a product that is meant for um, you know, just you know, whatever it is for you, lube can be so many things for a lot of people, right?
- 25:57SPEAKER_01: It can obviously in the bedroom, it brings more fun into the bedroom, but it can also be for other reasons.
- 26:02SPEAKER_01: Whatever you're using it for, you're using a product that's gonna help your overall like health down there.
- 26:06SPEAKER_01: It's going to help you, you know, especially vaginal health.
- 26:09SPEAKER_01: Vaginal health is not talked about.
- 26:11SPEAKER_01: I hear a lot of times, for example, people say the vagina cleans itself.
- 26:15SPEAKER_01: And I'm like, okay, self-cleaning, but you still have to manage your, you know, yourself in that area.
- 26:21SPEAKER_01: And you can't just pretend like it doesn't exist and it's just gonna, that's like saying that what the drugs that worked in the 1900s or something is gonna work now.
- 26:29SPEAKER_01: You know, that's not this it's not okay to say that.
- 26:32SPEAKER_01: So I think from a health perspective, that that's my whole point.
- 26:34SPEAKER_01: I get very interested as well, because there's definitely not enough education out there around this topic.
- 26:40SPEAKER_00: And we're all so interested in our wellness these days, right?
- 26:45SPEAKER_00: And I love that.
- 26:46SPEAKER_00: And and what is a word, what what is wellness, right?
- 26:50SPEAKER_00: It's preventative health care.
- 26:53SPEAKER_00: We're working out, we're doing all these things so that we don't get sick.
- 26:57SPEAKER_00: And that's how we think about using lubricant, right?
- 27:00SPEAKER_00: As it helps to maintain pH, it helps to make sure that you are maintaining that right, that right balance so that it prevents you from having these these issues.
- 27:14SPEAKER_00: Uh, you know, we don't have skin and our vagina, we have um uh we have mucous membranes, and so it's super absorbent and uh fragile.
- 27:26SPEAKER_00: And so if we have any friction in the bedroom, it creates micro-tears.
- 27:31SPEAKER_00: So, really, like when we think about wellness, we think about prevention and how can, you know, we look at our our product as really the first uh it goes beyond lubrication to multitask to hydrate, moisturize it's and soothe.
- 27:49SPEAKER_00: And so uh that that's the way like we think of this product and and how we think this could potentially change this entire category, in fact, at least in how people's perception of it is.
- 28:02SPEAKER_01: No, I mean that's that's huge.
- 28:04SPEAKER_01: And and I really like the ingredients you chose because they're really they're great ingredients.
- 28:09SPEAKER_01: And I think you know, it's definitely interesting what you mentioned about the mucous membrane thing, because that's something exactly like that's my it's exactly my point.
- 28:18SPEAKER_01: What I was saying is that people don't know this stuff.
- 28:20SPEAKER_01: You know, no one's teaching young women this these this information.
- 28:24SPEAKER_01: And I feel like you if you can learn this through exploring genuinely good options and sexual wellness, and you know, you can just learn this information as you're shopping.
- 28:36SPEAKER_01: Why wouldn't you, you know, why wouldn't you?
- 28:38SPEAKER_01: Like I feel like everybody should be getting behind brands like yours, like, including like if you're like a teacher, right, in the field.
- 28:45SPEAKER_01: Like if you have, you know, kids, if you have, you know, uh nieces and you know, you should be educating people everywhere you go.
- 28:52SPEAKER_01: I mean, I feel like it's part of being human.
- 28:54SPEAKER_01: And so I I really, really like that that you have it inbuilt and you've really thought it out in terms of the skincare aspect and the actual, you know, ingredients.
- 29:02SPEAKER_01: That's so important.
- 29:03SPEAKER_01: I feel like for a long time that wasn't happening, you know, with sexual wellness category, like the whole category was just it's as if it felt like people were using leftover ingredients, you know what I mean, and making these products.
- 29:15SPEAKER_01: And um, I can tell you for myself as a consumer, that was a lot of times that deterred me from buying certain certain sexual wellness products because I never felt like the quality was there, you know, I just didn't feel it.
- 29:27SPEAKER_01: And so as a consumer, like that goes such a long way at the end of the day.
- 29:32SPEAKER_01: If you know that a brand has thought it out and they've really considered like major things that they should be considering.
- 29:38SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 29:39SPEAKER_00: You know, we we internally we call it the sex ed gap, and we're so excited to, and I think that it timing is really, really nice to to be able to address all the things that you talked about.
- 29:51SPEAKER_00: We joke about like that proverbial middle school sex ed that we all grew up with, and that it was done in such an awkward way that it really didn't, it didn't aid, and it really wasn't about it, really wasn't tied to health in any way, right?
- 30:07SPEAKER_00: And that's nobody's fault.
- 30:08SPEAKER_00: And but the more conversations we even have, the more we see the lights go on with everyone we talk to, even our co-founder, Christina Aguilera.
- 30:18SPEAKER_00: She said it's changed the way she speaks about the subject to her own daughter.
- 30:23SPEAKER_00: And I've actually heard that time and time again.
- 30:26SPEAKER_00: And I and I love that.
- 30:27SPEAKER_00: And I have a son who's 12 years old and he's going through that school sex ed.
- 30:32SPEAKER_00: And I, and I'm like, well, this is an opportunity for me to introduce him to women's sexual health in a way that he's not going to continue the the the way it's been messaged before, and that he's really comfortable understanding how women's bodies work.
- 30:52SPEAKER_00: You know, for you know, we say when young women have to get their periods, they're eventually introduced to tampon.
- 30:58SPEAKER_00: And we said when when young women and women going through postpartum or menopause, um, they should be introduced to lubricant.
- 31:06SPEAKER_00: Like to me, it is just that that useful to your sexual wellness.
- 31:12SPEAKER_01: I love that you said that.
- 31:14SPEAKER_01: Like, I can I just say I'm a I'm such a fan of what you just said.
- 31:18SPEAKER_01: That is so like important.
- 31:20SPEAKER_01: Oh my God.
- 31:20SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 31:21SPEAKER_01: Like when women enter a certain age of our lives, we don't know what to buy.
- 31:25SPEAKER_01: We don't know.
- 31:26SPEAKER_01: I mean, it's I know I've watched my mother go through this.
- 31:29SPEAKER_01: I kid you not.
- 31:30SPEAKER_01: I watched my mom get confused about things that she was experiencing in just menopause overall.
- 31:36SPEAKER_01: You know what I mean?
- 31:36SPEAKER_01: Just like hot flashes.
- 31:38SPEAKER_01: She didn't know what was going on.
- 31:39SPEAKER_01: And it was because of this, there's not this generational, you know, passing down of knowledge that they they've had in their, you know, generation.
- 31:47SPEAKER_01: And and so, like, I'm a millennial.
- 31:49SPEAKER_01: And so when I think about, you know, what if I have daughters, I'm gonna be like so much more proactive, you know what I mean, than my mother could be because it was just wasn't around in her day.
- 31:58SPEAKER_01: You know, this this idea of like, I need to understand what's going on with my body.
- 32:02SPEAKER_01: But now, like I know we have some menopause brands that have come out, but yeah, absolutely.
- 32:07SPEAKER_01: You have to, you have to prepare, you have to get ready.
- 32:10SPEAKER_01: And, you know, like we were talking about earlier, you know, the women go through this every single day.
- 32:15SPEAKER_01: Vaginal dryness changes in the vaginal area, you know, and it's sometimes it becomes this overbearing thing where you're because let's be honest, when you're uncomfortable in your vaginal vulvar area, you're uncomfortable overall.
- 32:29SPEAKER_01: Your whole body's uncomfortable, you know what I mean?
- 32:31SPEAKER_01: You're not feeling good, everything feels crappy, you know, it's just it's a major thing.
- 32:35SPEAKER_01: And so yeah, you have to have the tools in your toolbox.
- 32:39SPEAKER_01: I mean, point blank.
- 32:40SPEAKER_00: And let's and let's just talk about not just physical, but emotional, which I think every woman can relate to, you know, like I always say, you know, that partners, male partners are like a light switch when you went in terms in terms of getting aroused.
- 32:59SPEAKER_00: And that's just very different for women because women are um built different, and there's all kinds of things that affect that.
- 33:06SPEAKER_00: And so, um, and we should have more conversations around that as well.
- 33:10SPEAKER_00: Um, that I love, right?
- 33:11SPEAKER_00: For example, if you're really stressed, or even if you're really, really cold, you're building up cortisone, and cortisone affects your ability to get aroused and and and and create serotonin.
- 33:26SPEAKER_00: So, so that for women, there's also this whole conversation around not just physically where you are in your life, but just on every day from a mo from an emotional perspective.
- 33:38SPEAKER_00: Um, and and so there's a ton of reasons that are not age related to really invest in understanding um about your own it how how to invest in and educate yourself in around sexual wellness.
- 33:56SPEAKER_01: Yeah, uh absolutely.
- 33:57SPEAKER_01: I think that it's it's it's just a very interesting time, I think, overall.
- 34:01SPEAKER_01: You know, it's people are people are changing, and I think the world is in changing for the good, but you know, there's still, I feel like there are certain people that are just more comfortable and they openly talk about it, which makes me so happy to see.
- 34:13SPEAKER_01: And there's still a closed-off population.
- 34:15SPEAKER_01: I think one of my biggest questions is like, um, you know, what are you really loving the most about what you're seeing with the female population, you know, in terms of like the strong stronger women are standing up, you know, for these kind of conversations, but if from a professional and personal level, like what do you see, you know, yeah.
- 34:31SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and this is what keeps me very positive because I think we entered, we entered thinking, wow, nobody wants to talk about it.
- 34:40SPEAKER_00: There's so much shame associated with it.
- 34:42SPEAKER_00: Are people, you know, can we, you know, can our can we actually help catalyze more conversation?
- 34:49SPEAKER_00: And we and we actually are seeing it just from younger women that I love.
- 34:53SPEAKER_00: And I think it's actually moving backwards.
- 34:56SPEAKER_00: Like women who are in their 40s are talking about it, um, but they're but they're still hesitant, right?
- 35:02SPEAKER_00: It's just it's hard to get rid of 40 years of what you've been exposed to.
- 35:06SPEAKER_00: And so we see this change actually coming from younger women and then and then growing and expanding to everybody else.
- 35:18SPEAKER_01: That's so interesting you say that.
- 35:20SPEAKER_01: I like that though, that it's the younger crowd that's doing it.
- 35:23SPEAKER_01: I mean, we need that because I think it's it's more of like an influential thing too.
- 35:27SPEAKER_01: It's like you're, I mean, you're more likely to take advice from your own age group, right?
- 35:31SPEAKER_01: So it's it's really good to see that you've noticed that they're doing that.
- 35:34SPEAKER_01: Because I honestly I'm not around the younger crowd enough to know if they're actually talking, but they need to be talking if they're not.
- 35:40SPEAKER_01: So that's that's really promising um to hear that.
- 35:44SPEAKER_01: I I you know, I want to ask you though, like in terms of like what when it comes to like the marketing aspect.
- 35:49SPEAKER_01: I mean, I'm sure it's been a uphill battle, right?
- 35:51SPEAKER_01: We're just still not there yet, I feel like, as far as sexual like awareness goes.
- 35:55SPEAKER_01: Like, how has that been for you?
- 35:56SPEAKER_01: Like just as an entrepreneur in this category, like, you know, getting the word out and like getting people to really kind of um you know resonate with what you're what you're doing.
- 36:05SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 36:06SPEAKER_00: Well, number one, I I love coming on your podcast because for us, it's all about conversations.
- 36:14SPEAKER_00: And whether that's girlfriend to girlfriend or what I call one to many, I think that's the the best way to to have the conversation.
- 36:24SPEAKER_00: Um, you know, we still see a lot of hesitation in social media and hopefully that changes over time.
- 36:31SPEAKER_00: And I understand that, right?
- 36:32SPEAKER_00: I mean, it's one thing to get on and and do a get ready with me.
- 36:36SPEAKER_00: Um, it's another thing, you know, but but we gotta we got you know, those that are brave, and there's a lot of brave women out there who can find that way to communicate it online.
- 36:46SPEAKER_00: Um, I think that there we're seeing more and more of that.
- 36:48SPEAKER_00: And then of course, the category itself is still fairly, fairly a lot censored.
- 36:54SPEAKER_00: Uh, you you know, as I as sort of the classic example with Meta is that you can advertise erectile dysfunction products, but you know, if we were to say personal lubricant for women and menopause, it would be censored.
- 37:11SPEAKER_00: So I think there's there's that, but I'm also hopeful again that as we all come together and talk about it and wrap the conversation in the wrapping paper of wellness that that will change too.
- 37:28SPEAKER_01: I agree.
- 37:29SPEAKER_01: I think it's uh it's such an interesting conversation to have too, because you know, I love your point about the erectile dysfunction drugs.
- 37:36SPEAKER_01: I I remember when I first saw my my first ad about it, like I think I was still in medical school at the time or it, you know, something in training, I think probably.
- 37:45SPEAKER_01: And I remember seeing it and I was like, why is this just openly out here?
- 37:50SPEAKER_01: You know what I mean?
- 37:50SPEAKER_01: I was like a little taken aback as a woman because I don't see Tampax ads like that.
- 37:55SPEAKER_01: You know what I mean?
- 37:55SPEAKER_01: At the time.
- 37:56SPEAKER_01: And I was like, this is kind of crazy to me that we're just it's so polarized, right?
- 38:01SPEAKER_01: And I feel like with wellness, it always becomes polarized.
- 38:04SPEAKER_01: Like with women, it's our skincare routines.
- 38:06SPEAKER_01: You know, I mean, how many times have I had this conversation with skincare brands about how men are not included in that category, you know, and in terms of like feeling like they fit in, but women were so comfortable.
- 38:16SPEAKER_01: And it's always this polarized, you know, position that we have as men and women.
- 38:22SPEAKER_01: And it doesn't have to be because when you could think about sexual wellness and like especially with lubricant, I know so many of my guy friends, like even growing up, even now, where like it kind of hurts their male ego if they can't per, you know, feel like they're performing well enough in the bedroom.
- 38:38SPEAKER_01: And a lot of times they weigh that by things like, you know, uh a woman and how she's like, you know, like that status down there during sexual intercourse, and they have voiced that concern to me, you know, as their friend.
- 38:51SPEAKER_00: And I'm like, okay, yeah.
- 38:53SPEAKER_00: If there was one stereotype I would want to change, it is that stereotype because it's misinformation that's been around for so long.
- 39:03SPEAKER_00: Like I said, estrogen goes up and down throughout the month.
- 39:09SPEAKER_00: There's a whole emotional and physical side of things, it's no one's fault.
- 39:13SPEAKER_00: It and it's wrong.
- 39:14SPEAKER_00: And and and then going back to, you know, the other thing I always say is like, why are we waiting to have pain with intercourse before we do something?
- 39:23SPEAKER_00: I mean, the reason why erectile dysfunction drugs exist is because there's a population out there that can't fathom having intercourse and not enjoying it to its full degree.
- 39:34SPEAKER_00: But for women, we're we put that aside and we only intervene when we are in pain.
- 39:40SPEAKER_00: And and so that stereotype, the fact that we only intervene when in pain, I mean, those things just uh need to change.
- 39:49SPEAKER_00: And then really, really the number one reason you should be using intimacy oils or lubricants is because it makes everything better.
- 39:58SPEAKER_00: That reason alone.
- 39:59SPEAKER_00: And I think I think whether it's a party of one or more, uh, who doesn't want to support that?
- 40:06SPEAKER_01: Exactly.
- 40:06SPEAKER_01: And why would you ever feel guilty about feeling good?
- 40:09SPEAKER_01: There's no reason to ever feel guilty about that.
- 40:12SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 40:12SPEAKER_00: But we do.
- 40:13SPEAKER_00: That's part of that deeply ingrained feelings that we've inherited uh and that we will all benefit from as we start to strip these away.
- 40:23SPEAKER_01: I agree, I totally agree.
- 40:25SPEAKER_01: And I think there's a lot of conversation that needs to be had because honestly, I know of individuals that have said, like, oh, well, I don't feel anything down there, you know, or at certain times during their sexual experience, like, oh, or I can't, you know, have an orgasm.
- 40:39SPEAKER_01: And I'm like, have you made sure that you're properly lubricated?
- 40:43SPEAKER_01: Because that will change everything as a woman for you.
- 40:45SPEAKER_01: You know, like it really does.
- 40:46SPEAKER_01: It changes everything completely.
- 40:48SPEAKER_01: That conversation is never had.
- 40:50SPEAKER_01: Like, we don't hear it, no one discusses it, but it's a real phenomenon.
- 40:54SPEAKER_01: Like it, and you know, the these are the kind of things that I kid you not, like sitting at this point in my life, I wonder, you know, and why I said what I said earlier about, you know, us girlfriends back in the day, we used to just call each other up, ask each other questions, whatever.
- 41:08SPEAKER_01: But I don't want, I don't know if the new generation is doing that, but they need to because you have to talk about it.
- 41:13SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 41:14SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 41:14SPEAKER_00: And then and that's that's what we're doing.
- 41:16SPEAKER_00: That's what we're sparking.
- 41:17SPEAKER_00: I mean, if this was at eight o'clock at night when we were doing this, I have a glass of wine and we could get, we can go, we could go deep into the subject.
- 41:25SPEAKER_00: But you know, I have to share the story that there but actually the way Playground first popped into my head was years and years and years ago.
- 41:34SPEAKER_00: I was at a bar with one of my girlfriends, and we were talking about these adult stores and how just uncomfortable we were to walk through them.
- 41:45SPEAKER_00: And we were just laughing about it, and then I was like, wow, this is unbelievable that we have this attitude.
- 41:52SPEAKER_00: So it starts it actually started with the conversation that my girlfriend was bold enough to bring up.
- 42:00SPEAKER_01: Oh wow.
- 42:02SPEAKER_01: Like that's I mean, at the end of the day, though, it isn't I feel like that's always the thing.
- 42:06SPEAKER_01: It's like so taboo to like bring these things up.
- 42:10SPEAKER_00: Like yeah, no, yeah, yeah.
- 42:15SPEAKER_00: No, I mean, I I could there's I've experienced a ton of stories, you know.
- 42:20SPEAKER_00: We've um we've raised capital for playground.
- 42:23SPEAKER_00: Uh we're see, you know, we're growing fast, which is so great.
- 42:27SPEAKER_00: So I think the message is sticking and getting out there.
- 42:30SPEAKER_00: And you know, I still get some really funny looks from investors, but I I feel like this is I'm so excited every day to wake up and have these conversations, create these products and prepare to create even even more and better products that bring pleasure and health together.
- 42:55SPEAKER_01: I love that.
- 42:55SPEAKER_01: I love that you're doing it.
- 42:56SPEAKER_01: And if you ever need a wing woman for these investors, I'm with you.
- 42:59SPEAKER_01: You know what I mean?
- 43:01SPEAKER_01: It's like, I just don't think we need the funny looks anymore.
- 43:04SPEAKER_01: We don't need any of that.
- 43:05SPEAKER_01: It's just natural.
- 43:07SPEAKER_01: And we are supposed to feel good, we are supposed to take care of ourselves as women, men, anybody.
- 43:13SPEAKER_01: Period.
- 43:13SPEAKER_01: This is a wellness thing, okay?
- 43:15SPEAKER_01: Let's get on board.
- 43:16SPEAKER_01: And I I just I don't know why anyone would ever look like that anymore.
