- 0:01Are Rott Hattruva, sheer #1, repentance to Shuva, Guilt,
- 0:09introspection, Ross's son and Yom Kippur not feeling good
- 0:13about ourselves, worrying about the future?
- 0:15I don't change. You can add your own word
- 0:19associations to the term shiver, repentance, thinking about
- 0:23another day of judgment, and all that's included in that term.
- 0:28Very often these topics are laden with heavy feelings, dark
- 0:34feelings, miserable feelings, feelings of I've tried before
- 0:39and didn't work or I'm never going to change.
- 0:41Who am I kidding? I'm happy to be me.
- 0:44Along came Ralph Cook, and his teachings were so full of light,
- 0:50so full of positivity, that even his work on toshiva, on
- 0:53repentance, he called a rot hattashiva, the light of
- 0:57repentance. Just on a simple etymological
- 1:00level, the word, the word toshiva, which we translate as
- 1:03repentance, really means returning, returning to a state
- 1:06of being that was always perfect before choices were made that
- 1:11took us away. We're not putting ourselves
- 1:14anywhere that's foreign or strange or unusual.
- 1:17We're simply going back to where we needed to be, where we came
- 1:22from. It's also important to just
- 1:26introduce a few words, a few bits of terminology.
- 1:30In Judaism, we have different words that we have in every
- 1:32language for doing something wrong.
- 1:34You can deliberately do something wrong, and that's with
- 1:38full intent to rebel, to to stand at a different place to
- 1:43the whatever. There's a rule, and I don't care
- 1:45that there's a rule. I am going to rebel against the
- 1:47authority of the king, God, Hashem, whoever it is that is
- 1:54giving us a certain rule. Now on the other side of the
- 1:57spectrum, there is a hat the cat.
- 2:00In English we translated the sin and because we brought up in a
- 2:03Christian society, most of us still isn't connected with the
- 2:07word guilt. And guilt makes you feel not
- 2:09very good about yourself and nobody wants to feel bad about
- 2:11themselves. And therefore we tend to avoid
- 2:13these conversations because it doesn't do too much for our self
- 2:16esteem. That's not very good either.
- 2:19And as so many teachers today explain, the word cat simply
- 2:23means to miss the target so that if you were aiming for something
- 2:26for the bull's eye and you got it wrong, you did a cat.
- 2:28It doesn't mean that you've wasted your life or you've lost
- 2:33opportunities and you're no good or good for nothing and your
- 2:37life has no value and no meaning.
- 2:39And how can you possibly try and look me in the eye?
- 2:42You're someone that's done a het.
- 2:44Not at all. It went wrong and say you try
- 2:48again. Now this very concept of
- 2:53starting again is so beyond most people's understanding.
- 2:56And the rabbis even say that Shiva, the whole idea that you
- 3:01can delete the past and start again is a gift from Hashem.
- 3:08And that's on a simple level. On a higher level, not only it's
- 3:12not, it's not just about deleting the past, it's using
- 3:16the past. It's using that that moment in
- 3:18time where you got something wrong.
- 3:21And now that moment doesn't become the defining detail in
- 3:26your life that meant that you're not worthy, but that wrong
- 3:31action now becomes the catalyst, the springboard for your future
- 3:36growth. So rather than saying that act
- 3:39that was once defined negatively or embarrassingly as something
- 3:43that makes you less perfect than you think you are, that you're a
- 3:47failure as a human being, you can actually transform the past
- 3:51so that that negativity now becomes a positive because now
- 3:54you're great, and it's because of that wrong date.
- 3:57So what does Ralph Cook do with this very concept?
- 4:02He takes it in in directions that are so, so deep, so
- 4:05beautiful, so, so different to what we're used to.
- 4:09Rav Cook says. ETS hat Chuva, anu, Notzian,
- 4:12Bishalosh. Matterhot to Shuva exists on 3
- 4:16levels. I love #1 to Shuva, Tiv It
- 4:21natural to Shuva, bet, #2 to Shuva and Monet faith-based to
- 4:28Shuva and gimble, #3 to shuva cyclit.
- 4:32It's intellectual to Shuva, natural to shuva is where we're
- 4:38going to start. Simple, simple sentence, just to
- 4:42get you going. A person sees very when it's
- 4:46natural, you see it very clearly in nature, the results of your
- 4:48actions. For example, you eat something
- 4:50that's not very good, that's bad.
- 4:53You have a bad stomach. It's not, it's not something
- 4:55that's complicated to understand.
- 4:57You have to fix the mistake. I had something I shouldn't have
- 5:00eaten. Now I'm going to stop doing
- 5:02that. But we're going to develop this
- 5:04concept. It's so much deeper, so much
- 5:05more beautiful. But you're going to have to
- 5:07return tomorrow for Part 2. Have a very nice day.
