- 0:11SPEAKER_02: Episode ten of Let's Stick Together brought to you by Y One with Brendan Creed, Yupe Demol, Phil Roper.
- 0:20SPEAKER_02: We I never say our name, so I thought I'd try something different.
- 0:23SPEAKER_02: Um I don't like it.
- 0:25SPEAKER_02: Was that was that is the Lanky Men better?
- 0:28SPEAKER_03: No, um no, actually I do like my name more.
- 0:31SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 0:32SPEAKER_02: Uh a small plug, Y1, the good guys who sponsor us.
- 0:36SPEAKER_02: Have you tried the Y1 Stick Quiz?
- 0:38SPEAKER_02: It's uh pretty interesting bit of technology online.
- 0:43SPEAKER_02: Just go on to www.y1hockey.com, try out the stick quiz, answer a few questions, and they will tell you which stick to buy.
- 0:55SPEAKER_03: You decide did your quiz answer match with what stick you've got?
- 1:02SPEAKER_02: I've definitely done it and it definitely matches up with shameless.
- 1:08SPEAKER_02: Have you done the why I want stick quiz?
- 1:11SPEAKER_01: Me.
- 1:12SPEAKER_01: Yes, you no, I gotta be completely honest, I didn't know there was a stick quiz right up until this moment.
- 1:23SPEAKER_01: It's not me being cool, it's just me not knowing that it was a that there is actually was a thing called a stick quiz.
- 1:32SPEAKER_03: So disappointing.
- 1:33SPEAKER_02: Mate, it's pretty cool.
- 1:35SPEAKER_03: I love my stick.
- 1:36SPEAKER_02: Yeah, okay.
- 1:37SPEAKER_02: Well, well, you know, if you get intrigued, try it out.
- 1:41SPEAKER_02: Um it's I am not what I'm gonna say.
- 1:48SPEAKER_02: That was a bit of a rhetorical question to the listeners.
- 1:50SPEAKER_02: You not see you.
- 1:55SPEAKER_02: It was um finals weekend a week ago, by the time this gets aired.
- 2:00SPEAKER_02: This is we're doing stuff in quite a confusing order, so I'm gonna try and try my best.
- 2:05SPEAKER_02: Brendan, um we played each other.
- 2:09SPEAKER_02: How was that for you?
- 2:10SPEAKER_02: Or why don't you give me your a couple of questions?
- 2:13SPEAKER_02: How was your overall experience of the finals weekend?
- 2:16SPEAKER_02: And then was how was playing the mighty Hulk?
- 2:22SPEAKER_03: I'll start with the I'll start with your second question because that makes more sense.
- 2:25SPEAKER_03: Um, frustrating game on Saturday night.
- 2:28SPEAKER_03: Um I felt you guys had a few chances, took took the two of them, and then basically played a 40-yard press for the rest of the game with the occasional counter-attack, um, which is turns out it's really difficult to break down.
- 2:47SPEAKER_03: Um so, all in all, I think you guys took your chances, and to be fair, deserved the win.
- 2:52SPEAKER_03: We had chances, but we didn't take them.
- 2:55SPEAKER_03: Um and then on to overall weekend vibes.
- 2:59SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I thought it was really good.
- 3:00SPEAKER_03: I actually really enjoyed the fact it was at one, it was at Serbiton, but it was at a club that can host it.
- 3:06SPEAKER_03: Um, I think it was a really nice atmosphere with fans.
- 3:10SPEAKER_03: I thought it was actually pretty hostile at times, which also was really cool.
- 3:13SPEAKER_03: Um, yeah, I think it's a great, and judging by what Serbiton could do in next bit, if it was there again, I think it'd be another success.
- 3:20SPEAKER_03: I thought it was a really good success, to be honest.
- 3:22SPEAKER_03: Um would I the only the only real issue I have is we played in a bronze medal game and there were no bronze medals.
- 3:31SPEAKER_03: So that does kind of piss me off quite a bit is the fact that there was a third-fourth for literally no point whatsoever, other than just a decent game of hockey.
- 3:40SPEAKER_02: Um there wasn't an EHL spot on it, there wasn't the bronze medal on it, there was nothing.
- 3:45SPEAKER_03: So we got told we were in a bronze medal match and there were no bronze medals, which uh for the life of me I still can't quite work out.
- 3:51SPEAKER_03: But hey ho.
- 3:52SPEAKER_04: Um success apart from the results.
- 3:55SPEAKER_02: For anyone who doesn't know, um old Georgians won the men's side, they are the English champions, you, for your information, and East Grinstead snapped Serbiton hockey's what something like nine-year streak at the end.
- 4:12SPEAKER_03: I think this was I think this was for nine, so it was eight.
- 4:15SPEAKER_02: They're eight-year streak, sorry, Brendan.
- 4:17SPEAKER_02: So Serbian women win uh women have won it eight years in a row, so it's probably pretty nice to see someone else's name on the trophy there.
- 4:23SPEAKER_02: Obviously, not for you, Brendan, as a Serban player.
- 4:26SPEAKER_02: Um but yeah, weekend was pretty good.
- 4:29SPEAKER_02: Uh it was could fun.
- 4:30SPEAKER_02: Obviously, we played for Holcomb in front of in front of the Serban kind of crowd, they were very rowdy.
- 4:38SPEAKER_02: Um, I fell out with all of my friends simultaneously.
- 4:42SPEAKER_02: Um Brendan Brendan tried to shove me at one point, and I told him, I don't know what I told you.
- 4:49SPEAKER_02: What did I tell you?
- 4:50SPEAKER_03: Your words were, what the fuck do you think you're doing?
- 4:54SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so that was good fun.
- 4:56SPEAKER_02: Um it was a really, really good game.
- 4:59SPEAKER_02: It was like what they talk about in the uh NBA when it's an actual playoff game, and we've played you a couple of times.
- 5:06SPEAKER_02: They these two are just flexing to each other because Brendan's really happy with himself.
- 5:10SPEAKER_02: Where where like you'll play each other in the regular season and then you will know all about it.
- 5:14SPEAKER_02: He's playing, he's played lots of playoff hockey where the intensity and the quality probably just goes up a couple of notches, where actually really means something.
- 5:22SPEAKER_02: So I thought that was pretty exciting to play in.
- 5:25SPEAKER_02: Brendan saying yes.
- 5:28SPEAKER_02: Sorry for not bringing you in.
- 5:29SPEAKER_02: How are you?
- 5:31SPEAKER_01: No, I was I was intrigued listening to uh about your weekend.
- 5:35SPEAKER_01: I know it must have uh must have hurt Brendan just a little bit losing against you because other than the English championship, I think more than all the honor of the podcast was on the line.
- 5:47SPEAKER_01: Um which probably will probably hurt Brendan more than uh losing the league.
- 5:53SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 5:53SPEAKER_01: Um yeah, but but for me as well, playoff hockey has been a while, Phil.
- 5:58SPEAKER_01: I've like we're we're we're kind of shitting the bet a lot the last couple of years with Oranio Road, so it's time we step back and like actually um make a name for ourselves in the league.
- 6:07SPEAKER_01: And I think people are starting to forget we actually used to be a pretty nice hockey club, and we're now a little bit uh the king, the king of the draw.
- 6:15SPEAKER_02: Well, I'm I'm the number one fan that hopes Oranio Road get back into the playoffs this this year and experience.
- 6:22SPEAKER_03: Brown nosing us discussion.
- 6:24SPEAKER_02: No, I'm being I'm being genuinely serious.
- 6:26SPEAKER_02: I want to see them play in the playoffs, I want to see UP smash life.
- 6:30SPEAKER_02: Um I want to see you back.
- 6:33SPEAKER_01: I want to see you back in an Oranio Road shirt for more than a year.
- 6:36SPEAKER_02: Yeah, well, I you know things been a tough week, you yeah, it has been a tough week.
- 6:41SPEAKER_02: Things, you know, we'd we'd never say never, do we?
- 6:43SPEAKER_02: And also, but very exciting for Holcomb, I should add, that is what we made your hockey league next year by that win against Serbiton.
- 6:51SPEAKER_02: So pretty exciting times for us to play in that competition, and that leads quite nicely on to by the time this airs, I think it will be like finals day of the EHL because it's Easter.
- 7:02SPEAKER_02: Um, hope everyone's got some Easter eggs, that's some chocolate.
- 7:06SPEAKER_02: Um, but we thought it'd be quite fun because we don't know what's going to happen, it hasn't happened yet.
- 7:12SPEAKER_02: To talk through what we think is gonna happen in the EHL and then see if we're right or not, because when you're listening to this, you will obviously know what's going on.
- 7:18SPEAKER_02: Um Rendon, let's start with you.
- 7:23SPEAKER_02: There are it's the K08 of the women's and men's in Amsterdam.
- 7:28SPEAKER_02: It's the finals day.
- 7:29SPEAKER_02: We we're not here, it's about a week before here.
- 7:31SPEAKER_02: So, what what's going on?
- 7:32SPEAKER_02: Who who are you backing?
- 7:35SPEAKER_03: Uh oh tough.
- 7:36SPEAKER_03: And the men's side, Cologne or Blumenthal are surely the two.
- 7:42SPEAKER_03: Um it's pretty hard to look past Blumenthal, to be honest.
- 7:47SPEAKER_03: They seem to have a pretty stacked group, uh group of players, sorry.
- 7:52SPEAKER_03: Um the women's I I Club DeCampo looks looked pretty tasty.
- 7:58SPEAKER_03: Um but I think you've got to go Dutch, haven't you?
- 8:02SPEAKER_03: Really?
- 8:02SPEAKER_03: Um it'd be silly to look past Stixer.
- 8:06SPEAKER_03: I think they've had it, or for me, Stixer, I think they've had a pretty unbelievable start to their season.
- 8:10SPEAKER_03: Um obviously they play against Denbosch in their first round, but I think it'll be I think they should come out on top, and then I think it's it's probably between them and the German side.
- 8:20SPEAKER_03: So from that point of view, it should be I'd I'd back them as my overall winner from the women's side.
- 8:24SPEAKER_02: I think you just to let you know, you did say club de campo at the start, and then you finished with Stixer or a German team in classic Creed style.
- 8:31SPEAKER_03: I've said Stixer, Stixer would be my overall for the women's, and I think Blumedau for the men.
- 8:36SPEAKER_03: So both sat.
- 8:38SPEAKER_02: Yeah, you was frowning throughout that.
- 8:40SPEAKER_02: Can you tell me what's going on?
- 8:43SPEAKER_01: Um, yeah.
- 8:45SPEAKER_01: No, no, I I I agree with Brendan.
- 8:47SPEAKER_01: I just think it's a little more easy than it.
- 8:49SPEAKER_01: Uh, then like we can make it all really interesting and stuff.
- 8:52SPEAKER_01: I just think Blumedau is gonna demolish everyone on their way.
- 8:55SPEAKER_01: They've just won 7-2 against Harvest Houdig.
- 8:59SPEAKER_01: Um, they just have by far the best selection out of everyone there.
- 9:04SPEAKER_01: Uh, I think uh the women, I to be honest, uh, it's Masters weekend, golf is on.
- 9:11SPEAKER_01: I I really didn't even know uh that the EHL was starting today.
- 9:15SPEAKER_01: Uh, to be completely honest with you guys.
- 9:18SPEAKER_01: I know every tea time of this weekend, but I don't know the actual actual schedule.
- 9:23SPEAKER_01: I didn't know Stix was playing Nambos.
- 9:26SPEAKER_01: Uh, I don't know a whole big deal about the women's uh uh competition.
- 9:31SPEAKER_01: I just know that uh Stixer and Denbos will probably be by far the best teams there.
- 9:39SPEAKER_01: Stix has a really really good selection with I think uh like six Dutch international players.
- 9:47SPEAKER_01: Den Bos the exact same, uh, but also like six international players.
- 9:52SPEAKER_01: So I think the winner of Den Bos Stixer will end up winning it, and I'm 99% sure Blumenau will win as well, just because of sheer uh talent and quality.
- 10:02SPEAKER_01: I don't think uh Cologne and like I think it's a popular thing to say because Cologne is like has done really well the last couple years, but even last year, when I think Cologne had a better team than they have this year, they got demolished in the final.
- 10:16SPEAKER_01: So I think if Blumau is like a team, it's like the Belgian uh national team, they have so much talent in the group and so much quality, they know when to turn it on and how to turn it on at the exact right moment.
- 10:29SPEAKER_01: They haven't been playing the best hockey in the hoofklasse, but now it's EHL and you see them winning against Harvestud, which is not a bad team, seven seven to two.
- 10:38SPEAKER_02: So, yeah, also, yeah.
- 10:41SPEAKER_02: I mean, they also have brought is it true that they they brought Florian Fuchs out of to retirement?
- 10:48SPEAKER_01: Yeah, they brought uh Florian Fuchs out of retirement, which is like also nice because they didn't have enough uh international quality and uh in the team already.
- 10:56SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and I heard it, and I heard a whisper, uh, like a like a rumor that Zach Wallace is also going there next year.
- 11:04SPEAKER_01: So yeah, talking about uh yeah, I I get it, like they didn't have enough quality players there already, so why not bring in the second best player in the world there as well, or the third best player?
- 11:15SPEAKER_01: Yeah, Blumenau are like uh doing well, but they're also kind of pissing me off, to be quite honest with you guys.
- 11:21SPEAKER_02: Does that make it fun?
- 11:23SPEAKER_02: I think I always think this like if if you're just winning all, I mean, obviously for them it makes it fun, but for everyone who's supporting or watching, you really want like everyone wants an exciting time.
- 11:34SPEAKER_02: Like when I support like Federer in his prime, it was it was way better when he was really close against Nadal.
- 11:41SPEAKER_02: It was it wasn't as fun when he was just smashing everyone and winning three sets to love.
- 11:46SPEAKER_01: If if if you can if you can get Wallace, like I don't know if it's actually true, I just heard he was like close to signing with Luna.
- 11:53SPEAKER_01: Like don't get me wrong, if you can get him, get him, 100% stand behind it.
- 11:59SPEAKER_01: It's just not fun for the rest of the competition.
- 12:05SPEAKER_02: And get Vellum and get Vellum by you there.
- 12:08SPEAKER_03: This is that this is the point, isn't it?
- 12:09SPEAKER_03: Is like if P if clubs have got endless pockets, the league system kind of loses the enjoyment factor of playing.
- 12:18SPEAKER_03: Whereas like the whole draft system for like American sports is what makes it so good, is the fact that it tries to create a level playing field every season, and obviously you can trade and this, that, and the other, and it can kind of change, and groups you never know how they're gonna figure out this, that, and the other.
- 12:32SPEAKER_01: But like the whole draft system works really well in America, and like unfortunately, the equivalent of this, but it's is but but the one the sorry for the one thing I want to add is that because that's the thing with Blumen now, is I don't think they're the highest paying club in Holland, to be honest.
- 12:48SPEAKER_01: There's just this aura around no, honestly, I like I think there's it's not like the it's also it's not the biggest club in Holland, like it is, it is it is from a like a like a like a um uh performing, yeah, like a historical and performing type of club, but it it it has like three hockey pitches or something, which in Holland is is not a lot.
- 13:11SPEAKER_01: It has it doesn't have a good youth, or they don't have like a good youth uh uh system, like a good uh like like great youth teams.
- 13:19SPEAKER_01: It's just the aura around Blumedaal, the whole history and like the whole like because they've been good the last couple of years, also people want to join, and it's like a knock on effect, like Artie van Doel joined, Jorit Krohn joined, uh Cherry Bringman joined the colour like a seven or eight years ago, and now like it's heading on, heading on.
- 13:40SPEAKER_02: I yeah, I I agree.
- 13:41SPEAKER_02: I I what I was gonna say was on your point of like how to make it more even, is someone spoke to me, and I can't remember who it was, saying, could you limit the number?
- 13:52SPEAKER_02: I guess you'd only have to do it in the countries, but you could you limit the number of like internationals that you have at your club.
- 13:58SPEAKER_02: So, for example, you could only have five or four Dutch internationals at your club, therefore, it has to spread the love out, and therefore makes it more interesting as to which internationals you choose, and therefore, then internationals have to go to other clubs.
- 14:14SPEAKER_02: Obviously, you can't do that with like Belgians or Australians or English people or whatever, but like we were talking it from an English point of view of like, you know, there's there's so many internationals, so many GB internationals at the has been at Serbiton, there has been at Old Georgians, there has been at Holcombe in the past.
- 14:32SPEAKER_02: Like, wouldn't it be more interesting if you said you can only have four from the GB program?
- 14:38SPEAKER_02: Like, suddenly it spreads, and then suddenly their them players are going to different clubs, they're then increasing the quality of the training of the people around them, and then suddenly like everywhere starts to improve gradually.
- 14:50SPEAKER_03: Well, we we used to have in the English league, we used to have you could only have two maximum foreign players, didn't we?
- 14:56SPEAKER_03: That was a rule for a while.
- 14:57SPEAKER_03: Two maximum international like foreign players.
- 15:01SPEAKER_03: Um, but the only thing I can think of is you can't you can't start that in like, for example, like next year, you can't just tell people they have to up and move.
- 15:09SPEAKER_03: Do you know what I mean?
- 15:10SPEAKER_03: So it's a difficult thing to start.
- 15:11SPEAKER_03: Like you have to you almost have to choose a date when you're like in three years' time, we're gonna start this.
- 15:16SPEAKER_03: Clubs need to start preparing for it, yeah.
- 15:20SPEAKER_01: But yeah, but the the and that's a tough thing in Holland, and it's just um like Holland and hockey in Holland is pretty, and I think it's a bit the same in England, but like uh a lot of clubs are based around London, and in Holland it's really Amsterdam-based, but also it's like a lot of and it's a long, it's well, it's not that long of a discussion, but like a lot of the young players tend to move for study reasons or for just liking the city of Amsterdam a lot, move up west or like more up north.
- 15:50SPEAKER_01: So it's really hard for clubs in the south, like the Bos, like uh Orange Road, but also I think Rotterdam.
- 15:56SPEAKER_01: It's tough to attract young players because they all want to move to the capital, and it's like an hour and a half, and then Holland, an hour and a half, or like an hour is a long drive uh away.
- 16:04SPEAKER_01: So that if they move to Amsterdam, you lose them.
- 16:08SPEAKER_01: And we we've like, for instance, Stern Beins, really good young player, player of national team, he's now not that young.
- 16:14SPEAKER_01: He was our first drag flicker, he was like a center back, and then he decided I want to live in Amsterdam, and we lost him.
- 16:19SPEAKER_01: But there's it's not the other way around.
- 16:21SPEAKER_01: So if you say you can only have like four, uh like I don't think it really works in Holland because I think the clubs in the south already have to work really hard to actually get talent or like get international players to play for them.
- 16:33SPEAKER_01: Where like clubs like Rhein Rood and also then Boss, but also I think Rotterdam, they have to look abroad to get international players, and Blumenao has the luxury also because, but also clubs like Amsterdam, Pinot, they have the luxury of like players coming to Amsterdam.
- 16:50SPEAKER_01: They can ask the whole whole of Netherlands.
- 16:51SPEAKER_01: Well, we know we don't have a chance.
- 16:53SPEAKER_01: If we ask a guy who lives in Amsterdam, we have no chance of getting him.
- 16:58SPEAKER_02: I mean, it still would probably I mean, if you can't have four, if you can only have four, I've just kind of made that up, but like surely then people would have to move somewhere.
- 17:09SPEAKER_02: Like, so if you're in Amsterdam and you play for Amsterdam, and you can't go to Blumenthal because they've already got four, you can't go to Pinnacle because they've got four.
- 17:18SPEAKER_02: Like, surely they've got to go somewhere.
- 17:21SPEAKER_01: Yeah, but I just don't, and that's that's why hockey is not a hockey is not a full professional sport.
- 17:28SPEAKER_01: I think there's like a the happy few in the Hofklasse that actually make a living out of hockey for as long as they play hockey.
- 17:34SPEAKER_01: But as soon as hockey stops, they're they're like they have to start working.
- 17:38SPEAKER_01: So it's like you have to during your hockey career, if you're not an international player, you already have to work or have to study or whatever.
- 17:44SPEAKER_01: I don't I don't think I think the hockey sport will die then in Holland, and the whole hof klasse can like stop because no hockey player is going to move for their hockey to the south or to like another uh like uh city.
- 17:57SPEAKER_02: Yeah, okay.
- 17:58SPEAKER_02: I mean, I understand.
- 17:59SPEAKER_02: I was just trying to provide a solution to your saying that Blue Midal are way too good.
- 18:04SPEAKER_01: Uh yeah, I don't I don't really like to think of solutions, Phil.
- 18:07SPEAKER_01: I just want to bitch about my problem here, to be honest.
- 18:08SPEAKER_01: That's fair enough.
- 18:09SPEAKER_01: That's fair enough.
- 18:12SPEAKER_02: Just just just for shits and gigs, I'm gonna put other people to win.
- 18:18SPEAKER_02: I'm gonna say um Pembroke Wanderers are gonna win and hamburger polo.
- 18:26SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I say sound they sound made up.
- 18:28SPEAKER_02: Are they made up?
- 18:29SPEAKER_03: Well, just just to let you know, Pembroke are already knocked out.
- 18:32SPEAKER_03: Ah, devastating.
- 18:33SPEAKER_02: Okay, well, my predictions are wrong.
- 18:35SPEAKER_02: That's one.
- 18:36SPEAKER_02: They actually sound where are they from?
- 18:39SPEAKER_03: I assume they were Irish or Scottish.
- 18:42SPEAKER_02: They sound like you've made them up, and then just someone.
- 18:45SPEAKER_03: Pembroke wonders.
- 18:47SPEAKER_03: Let's have a look at it.
- 18:47SPEAKER_02: By the way, we do have some um some hot news today, which is um sorry, just to bring this up, you put this in our like executive producers group today.
- 18:57SPEAKER_02: Um, on top of the burner accounts we've already got, someone has actually started an Instagram account called Brendan's Towel.
- 19:06SPEAKER_02: And you put this on and said, I swear to god, Brenn, this is not me.
- 19:11SPEAKER_01: Absolutely fucking shit.
- 19:13SPEAKER_01: Like, I wanna, I want, I want, I wanna formally like I was so pissed when you put this message in.
- 19:20SPEAKER_01: Yeah, but one, I want to apologize, uh Brendan, for bringing up um, because we all know there is a crusty old towel in the corner of your room somewhere.
- 19:29SPEAKER_01: I wanna like apologize for bringing it up so much.
- 19:32SPEAKER_01: And secondly, I wanna like um I know he, she or whatever is listening.
- 19:38SPEAKER_01: I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for making this account because it's been the best thing that happened that's happened to me all week.
- 19:45SPEAKER_01: And they he actually or she actually has like the profile picture of the towel, which like makes it even better.
- 19:53SPEAKER_02: But I've uh this is brand new, this is live.
- 19:55SPEAKER_02: I've just gone onto Instagram and they've they've they've they've sent us a very long message, right?
- 20:03SPEAKER_02: Brent, have you seen this?
- 20:04SPEAKER_03: No, I haven't, but I'm assuming you're gonna read it out anyway.
- 20:06SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I am gonna read it out.
- 20:08SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so I felt sympathetic that you only had one submission for your new logo, including Yupe.
- 20:14SPEAKER_02: And I seeing as how much Phil likes Oxted, I want to suggest this.
- 20:17SPEAKER_02: They've put a photo of all three of us behind the Oxted badge with let's stick together over the top.
- 20:23SPEAKER_02: Um they the template is credit to Oxted having a logo which looks like it was designed on Windows Paint.
- 20:33SPEAKER_02: Right, he adds a few, he or she adds a few things, but then he's got a shit or hit, which I'll do in a second.
- 20:39SPEAKER_02: Then he finishes off with, or she finished off with, I love the pod.
- 20:43SPEAKER_02: It's a highlight of my my commute training, so keep up the good work and shit on suburbitan.
- 20:50SPEAKER_02: Regards Brendan's towel.
- 20:53SPEAKER_03: Can we can we clarify something?
- 20:55SPEAKER_03: Somebody came up to me on the weekend and genuinely tried to talk to me about the towel and why it's in my room.
- 21:02SPEAKER_03: I don't have a crusty towel in my house, it's not a thing.
- 21:10SPEAKER_03: And I'm this I'm disappointed.
- 21:12SPEAKER_03: I find it absolutely hilarious the fact that there's now I I cannot believe this.
- 21:16SPEAKER_02: This is unbelievable.
- 21:17SPEAKER_02: I feel like we've hit a new high in our podcast journey.
- 21:20SPEAKER_01: Don't be don't be embarrassed, mate.
- 21:23SPEAKER_01: The classic, no, it's not a thing.
- 21:24SPEAKER_01: Stop trying to force it to be a thing.
- 21:26SPEAKER_01: Your girlfriend lives on the other side of the North Sea or the canal.
- 21:31SPEAKER_01: I don't know how you guys go to the channel.
- 21:32SPEAKER_01: I don't know how you guys call it.
- 21:35SPEAKER_01: And Dutch we say canal, so fuck you, Brendan.
- 21:39SPEAKER_01: Channel, channel.
- 21:40SPEAKER_01: We're looking for you.
- 21:42SPEAKER_01: Yeah, nice way to like to like rebound about your fucking crusty old child, because I know for sure there's I see it.
- 21:52SPEAKER_01: I see it on your couch there behind you.
- 21:54SPEAKER_03: In the mirror.
- 21:57SPEAKER_03: I will defend myself again on this.
- 22:00SPEAKER_03: These are actually uh clean bedsheets, they've just not been put in the airing cupboard yet.
- 22:05SPEAKER_03: So thank you.
- 22:06SPEAKER_03: Yeah, let's not be able to do that.
- 22:07SPEAKER_01: Why did they have to be cleaned?
- 22:09SPEAKER_01: Exactly.
- 22:09SPEAKER_01: But Phil, go on.
- 22:10SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 22:11SPEAKER_02: Let's let's let's take a chill pull on this one.
- 22:13SPEAKER_02: Thank you, Brendan's Tao, for the messages, and I really, really hope that you carry on.
- 22:18SPEAKER_02: This is completely legit.
- 22:20SPEAKER_02: This is what I've just got and read out.
- 22:21SPEAKER_02: I don't that I hope no one thinks we're making this up.
- 22:24SPEAKER_02: Um the extra bit was for you, and it says a shit or hit for you, which is thoughts on backpacks instead of stick bags.
- 22:32SPEAKER_02: Stick bags for me, scream hockey badger.
- 22:36SPEAKER_02: So I assume when you go into hockey wearing a backpack instead of a stick bag, is that a shit or a hit?
- 22:42SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I I'm I'm I'm the guy who's always wearing a backpack.
- 22:46SPEAKER_01: Uh and I've never never had a stick back.
- 22:48SPEAKER_01: So uh other than being incredibly useful for Brendan, uh the towel again is uh is completely right.
- 22:55SPEAKER_01: A hockey uh stick back is uh is is uh is a bit uh badger, a hockey badger, and I uh yeah, yeah, I agree with that.
- 23:05SPEAKER_02: Um unbelievable.
- 23:06SPEAKER_02: Um lastly, just to finish up on EHL, which we haven't done that much on, but screw it, is um Camilla Kelly got in touch and just wanted to say this is again maybe the new levels of our podcast.
- 23:19SPEAKER_02: She wanted to give her fiance who's on his stagdo at the EHL a shout-out.
- 23:25SPEAKER_02: Um, so Dave Saunders, happy stagdo.
- 23:28SPEAKER_02: Hopefully, you really hung over and uh you had a good time with your umbrella hat on at the EHL.
- 23:34SPEAKER_02: Um, and congratulations on getting married.
- 23:36SPEAKER_02: This is this is uh is that a new this is a new high for us.
- 23:39SPEAKER_02: I feel like we're we're yeah, what's happening?
- 23:42SPEAKER_02: There's logos.
- 23:43SPEAKER_03: That's a win.
- 23:44SPEAKER_03: Yeah, we still haven't got a logo though.
- 23:46SPEAKER_03: Hopefully, by the next season we'll have a logo.
- 23:49SPEAKER_01: Yeah, mate.
- 23:49SPEAKER_01: It's a win, it's a win.
- 23:50SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I hope so as well because I feel left out.
- 23:52SPEAKER_01: You've already recorded an episode without me, and I'm not even in the logo for like two years.
- 23:57SPEAKER_01: Oh my lord, this guy.
- 23:59SPEAKER_01: Yeah, oh my lord, like mate.
- 24:01SPEAKER_01: Uh uh, I'm the prettiest one out of the three.
- 24:07SPEAKER_01: Why am I not in the logo?
- 24:09SPEAKER_02: Look, we've just I've just told you that Brendan's Towel has made us a logo, so that it's it's done.
- 24:14SPEAKER_01: There is one let's let's finish off the chicken logo.
- 24:19SPEAKER_02: Let's finish off this um half of the pod with just a a wrap-up of the Alcoholin hockey chat that we had last week.
- 24:28SPEAKER_02: Hopefully, people kind of tuned in.
- 24:30SPEAKER_02: I think people quite enjoyed last week.
- 24:32SPEAKER_02: I don't know.
- 24:32SPEAKER_02: I'm making a bit of an assumption there.
- 24:34SPEAKER_02: But uh our friend and long-term, long time listener, Tom Hudson.
- 24:38SPEAKER_03: He's our only Chinese listener to clarify.
- 24:40SPEAKER_02: Or only Chinese, he's not I mean, he's not Chinese, he just lives in China.
- 24:43SPEAKER_02: I just thought I'd clarify that one as well.
- 24:45SPEAKER_02: Um, he has just been to the Hong Kong rugby sevens, uh, and he wanted to just bring up a little a few differences again that maybe we didn't talk about last week.
- 24:55SPEAKER_02: He said having separate stands um also could could entice people to do this where we're like targeting different audiences.
- 25:03SPEAKER_02: What he spoke about, he said there was a specific 18 plus stand where you know the groups of students slash legends who want to booze hard can go without offending people, and then the rest of the stadium is for anyone, so the atmosphere is still pretty good.
- 25:18SPEAKER_02: This is what was happening at the Hong Kong rugby sevens.
- 25:21SPEAKER_02: Everything was open before the event and two hours after, where the players also came out to say hello at some points.
- 25:29SPEAKER_02: Um, at the hockey, this is a bit of a difference because the bars, especially, I think he's talking about Lee Valley.
- 25:34SPEAKER_02: The bars and food closes before the end of the last game, so you're basically being kicked out of your seats and kicked out of the place.
- 25:40SPEAKER_02: So even if you want another drink, you can't have one.
- 25:43SPEAKER_02: There were also lots of areas where people can socialize, have a drink, things to do for the kids, which I think hockey has a little bit of.
- 25:51SPEAKER_02: Um, but he was just bringing up some of the stuff that he's just experienced that the Hong Kong will be sevens.
- 25:56SPEAKER_02: Um, guys, what do you think of that?
- 26:00SPEAKER_01: Yeah, sounds good.
- 26:02SPEAKER_01: 100%.
- 26:03SPEAKER_01: I think uh we need to find ways to grow the game a bit more.
- 26:07SPEAKER_01: I think this is one of them.
- 26:08SPEAKER_01: And I also think people need to be like just it, it's good for hockey.
- 26:13SPEAKER_01: Like the when we talked about it last week with like the the the that that there were no banners and no uh like flares around uh allowed and stuff.
- 26:23SPEAKER_01: I think we need to like start doing that, like promote it instead of banning it, and like promote people to like get a little get a little uh shit faced watching a hockey game.
- 26:35SPEAKER_01: I think that like that helps create an atmosphere, it helps create more like cool uh images of hockey and it actually like makes a better um yeah, it looks better for the outside world.
- 26:45SPEAKER_01: I think that's what hockey needs.
- 26:46SPEAKER_01: So I think it's a good idea.
- 26:48SPEAKER_01: Get everyone shit faced in the same corner.
- 26:50SPEAKER_01: Like, has that ever gone wrong?
- 26:53SPEAKER_01: A bunch of like people who are drunk in the same room.
- 26:56SPEAKER_01: No, I don't didn't think so.
- 26:59SPEAKER_03: Um, yeah, I I completely agree.
- 27:01SPEAKER_03: Flares and things like that, drums and things.
- 27:03SPEAKER_03: I um I'm with you on it.
- 27:04SPEAKER_03: I think I think the the the cool thing of this is like as Tom's saying, like, even like two hours after where the players come and meet, I think quite a cool thing because it just gives that like appreciation for actually people can come and say hello.
- 27:17SPEAKER_03: Like, I think that makes it easier rather than standing behind a fence, like actually giving us like a space, giving the fans a space that it just incre just improves the kind of like experience of the day, which I think just makes sense.
- 27:30SPEAKER_02: It is such a good point, that isn't it?
- 27:31SPEAKER_02: Why do they have to stop the food and the drink uh before the last game?
- 27:35SPEAKER_02: Doesn't make any sense, does it?
- 27:36SPEAKER_02: Like, you want people there for the maximum amount of time, surely, to like spend their money, have a good time.
- 27:41SPEAKER_02: If they want to carry on drinking, you can like it's a good option.
- 27:45SPEAKER_02: Yeah, but thank you very much, Tom.
- 27:47SPEAKER_02: You're a kind man.
- 27:49SPEAKER_02: Um, this has been the first part.
- 27:52SPEAKER_02: We'll be back in a sec.
- 27:54SPEAKER_02: Brendan, stop eating your mic, you weirdo.
- 27:58SPEAKER_03: Sorry, you what have you been doing the whole episode so far?
- 28:01SPEAKER_01: As I said, it's the most beautiful weekend of the year.
- 28:06SPEAKER_01: It's Masters weekend.
- 28:08SPEAKER_01: The Magnolias are blooming, life is good, the sun is shining in Georgia, and I'm watching the Masters while we are recording.
- 28:16SPEAKER_00: At least it's the best part, guys.
- 28:18SPEAKER_01: Um my backing.
- 28:19SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I'm always a bit of a Homa fan.
- 28:21SPEAKER_01: I love Max Homa.
- 28:23SPEAKER_01: Um and I like uh I want uh I want Ram to win.
- 28:29SPEAKER_01: Uh there's no Dutch guy in the Masters, really, so uh I like some European uh glory.
- 28:35SPEAKER_01: And I've had a picture at the Olympics in Tokyo with Tommy Fleetboot.
- 28:39SPEAKER_01: He will he will for sure not win, but I fucking love Tommy Fleetwood.
- 28:44SPEAKER_03: This is I got handed a pack of condoms by Paul Casey, and he said use them wisely at the Olympics.
- 28:51SPEAKER_03: Oh that's my claim to fame.
- 28:54SPEAKER_01: And what did you say?
- 28:56SPEAKER_01: Don't need him, got my towel in the corner of my room.
- 29:01SPEAKER_03: He's such a dick.
- 29:03SPEAKER_00: He was funny enough, Paul Casey was a big fan of hockey.
- 29:07SPEAKER_00: Let's oh, I thought he was a big fan of Let's Hey, maybe he listens.
- 29:13SPEAKER_00: Or are you gonna get send an email or Paul?
- 29:18SPEAKER_02: If you're out there, I need a 60-degree wedge, please.
- 29:23SPEAKER_03: Uh funnily enough, Phil, if you actually do need a 60-degree wedge, I have got one in the garage if you would like one.
- 29:28SPEAKER_02: Anyway, if if I mean we're all golfers a little bit, let's just finish this up, wrap this up.
- 29:36SPEAKER_02: Um, you know, I'm backing.
- 29:38SPEAKER_02: Who am I backing?
- 29:38SPEAKER_02: Hideki Matsuyama.
- 29:40SPEAKER_03: Come on.
- 29:40SPEAKER_03: Oh, for God's sake.
- 29:42SPEAKER_03: So you Phil every year says that Matsuyama's gonna win something.
- 29:47SPEAKER_03: Every year, no matter what competition, you'll always have a thing for Matsuyama.
- 29:50SPEAKER_02: All four majors, I'm I'm backing Hideki.
- 29:54SPEAKER_03: I want I want the big man Rory to win it.
- 29:56SPEAKER_03: I want I want him to get a green jacket.
- 29:59SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I like I like Rory a lot.
- 30:01SPEAKER_01: I always like the thing with golf is um golf is really honest also towards itself, not to be too philosophical, but like if you know who you back, just because when you look at the leaderboard, you immediately look for some names.
- 30:15SPEAKER_01: I always find myself looking for Homer, looking for McElroy, looking for Ram.
- 30:18SPEAKER_01: I just think Rory is a little bit of a bitch sometimes.
- 30:22SPEAKER_01: He just whines a lot, doesn't he?
- 30:24SPEAKER_01: Like, one of the greats of the game, he fucking unreal swing.
- 30:28SPEAKER_01: He's just sometimes he seems like such a bitch.
- 30:30SPEAKER_01: Like, do you think you can connect to him?
- 30:34SPEAKER_01: Oh, Phil, what a great call! That's actually well done to you.
- 30:39SPEAKER_01: Um, like to be completely objective, I think everyone can vouch for this.
- 30:43SPEAKER_01: Who's listening?
- 30:44SPEAKER_01: You are by far the biggest bitch out of the three of us.
- 30:47SPEAKER_01: Yeah, agreed.
- 30:49SPEAKER_01: Yeah, let's just settle that.
- 30:51SPEAKER_02: This may be a little bit of a nibble.
- 30:54SPEAKER_01: No, I'm in agreement.
- 30:56SPEAKER_01: It's a really big nibble.
- 30:57SPEAKER_02: Brendan, obviously, you're gonna be in agreement.
- 31:02SPEAKER_03: On you's point, I love Max Homer.
- 31:05SPEAKER_03: I absolutely love him, but I think he's awesome.
- 31:08SPEAKER_02: Oh, for God's sake, man.
- 31:10SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 31:10SPEAKER_02: Well, this has been a fun golf thing.
- 31:12SPEAKER_02: Let's finish up.
- 31:13SPEAKER_02: Brendan plays off about 12, but the real handicap is 27.
- 31:20SPEAKER_03: I play off 13, but 33, yes.
- 31:22SPEAKER_02: Yeah, you're off six or seven.
- 31:25SPEAKER_02: No, no, no.
- 31:28SPEAKER_01: Four, four point three.
- 31:30SPEAKER_02: Well, what that really means is probably about 10.
- 31:32SPEAKER_01: And um, no, Philip, Philip, shut the fuck up.
- 31:36SPEAKER_01: I know this.
- 31:37SPEAKER_01: I spent at least three days a week at the golf course.
- 31:41SPEAKER_01: I can play some golf, not because of because I'm that talented, just because I'd stick a lot of time in it.
- 31:46SPEAKER_01: I'm chipping in my back garden, I'm putting him in like uh on the carpet here.
- 31:51SPEAKER_01: I'm putting a lot of golf games.
- 31:53SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I'm a golf badger.
- 31:55SPEAKER_01: I'm a golf badger, and I'm a proud one.
- 31:59SPEAKER_01: You done?
- 32:00SPEAKER_01: So come come at me, bro.
- 32:02SPEAKER_02: I was just gonna ask, what do you think you'd hit around Augusta as our final golf question?
- 32:08SPEAKER_01: 69, I think.
- 32:12SPEAKER_03: Nice.
- 32:14SPEAKER_03: Uh, I'm looking over 200.
- 32:18SPEAKER_03: I genuinely think over 200 because I reckon on each green I'm putting at least seven or eight times minimum, and that's just on the green.
- 32:25SPEAKER_01: Uh yeah, I want I wanna I want to make it.
- 32:27SPEAKER_01: I don't know if you say it in in English as well.
- 32:29SPEAKER_01: I want to make a little bridge uh over here because I think it's a good conversation.
- 32:33SPEAKER_01: I think uh we we've talked about it in the in the um um in the couple podcasts ago, but I think hockey needs more betting and more bets on hockey.
- 32:43SPEAKER_01: I think it grows the game a lot.
- 32:45SPEAKER_01: So I wanted to ask first, what's the over-under for you guys?
- 32:49SPEAKER_01: Uh the amount of golf balls you need at Augusta.
- 32:52SPEAKER_01: And then I wanted to go like make a little bridge towards hockey.
- 32:55SPEAKER_01: What like I think um, like in all seriousness, I think hockey needs like more action around betting.
- 33:01SPEAKER_01: I think it's a great sport to bet on.
- 33:04SPEAKER_01: It would be really cool because there's like a lot of surprises in hockey.
- 33:07SPEAKER_01: So I think the bookies could make a lot of money out of it, and I think we should not only be able to bet, like in America, they can bet on anything.
- 33:15SPEAKER_01: Who like at golf they can bet on who leaves the T-Box first, who's uh is the is the winner of the masters crying after he wins it.
- 33:22SPEAKER_01: I think we need more like like the over-under for cards in the game, like that.
- 33:26SPEAKER_01: You know, okay, uh, this this shitty ref is is is uh refereeing this game.
- 33:30SPEAKER_01: He gives a lot of cards, the over-under is four and a half, and you can bet on it.
- 33:34SPEAKER_01: I think we need more shit like that in hockey because it helps grow the game, it makes people watch more.
- 33:38SPEAKER_01: Sometimes people watch football games like the sixth team in Saudi Arabia against the sixth team in God knows what country, and just because they put money on it, they're going to watch it.
- 33:51SPEAKER_02: Thing is, every week as well.
- 33:52SPEAKER_02: I'm putting if it came up on my like bet 3-6 hype where it was like a double, and it was like Creed to pass the centre forward and uh you de mole to you know get a yellow card.
- 34:03SPEAKER_02: I'm I'm I'm taking that.
- 34:06SPEAKER_00: You're so predictable with your comments, Phil.
- 34:08SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and and and the other for like Phil to do the rope of death there.
- 34:13SPEAKER_01: Oh, that the referee makes a bad decision, and Phil looks at the umpire really angry because it's so notorious in England.
- 34:19SPEAKER_03: Over over 5.5 wines from Phil for thinking he should get a foul.
- 34:23SPEAKER_03: Like, it's just predictable, it's just pointless.
- 34:26SPEAKER_03: You're obviously gonna put money on it because you're winning every single time.
- 34:31SPEAKER_03: I think it's a really good idea.
- 34:32SPEAKER_03: I'm I'm I completely agree.
- 34:34SPEAKER_03: Like, I know people that watch like Everton play, for example, because they want to see seven throw-ins in a game, like that kind of like sadness in terms of like to win money, but you're right, it would grow the game.
- 34:47SPEAKER_01: You should be able to bet more on hockey, like the over-under uh amount of hockey games played by Brendan in a season, yeah.
- 34:54SPEAKER_01: Considering everything, injuries, injuries, him leaving the club halfway through a season, uh uh like going on a bicycle and falling down the road and like jugging his elbow in the hospital.
- 35:07SPEAKER_01: Like, I didn't miss any games for that one.
- 35:09SPEAKER_02: In all seriousness, though, you make a really good point because at football games, I don't know, like obviously, like you can talk about horse racing and stuff like that, but like at football games, you can go and have a little punt before the before kickoff, like under the stands.
- 35:24SPEAKER_02: Um it's like a real thing where then you start really, even if you're not fully into the game, you're really into it then.
- 35:32SPEAKER_02: Like it's it's a really good point.
- 35:33SPEAKER_02: Obviously, we want people to bet safely, and you know, when the fun stops, stop.
- 35:38SPEAKER_02: But like it's a fucking great idea, you ropes.
- 35:41SPEAKER_03: Do you remember when we were at uni and two of the guys had put a bet on Wigan versus Arsenal on a Monday night in the pub?
- 35:48SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 35:48SPEAKER_03: And it was and it was Wigan to win 2-1 and Franco DeSanto to score first.
- 35:54SPEAKER_03: Anyway, 15 minutes into the game, it's 2-1, and Franco DeSanto scored first.
- 35:59SPEAKER_03: And for the next 75 minutes, pretty much the whole pub was cheering for these two boys because they were like, it was a massive bet.
- 36:05SPEAKER_03: They were like, I think they would win like 400 quid off a quid.
- 36:08SPEAKER_03: Like it was so extreme, like the the uh odds on it.
- 36:11SPEAKER_03: And honestly, mate, I've never seen anything like in terms of like the whole pub all cheering for this one thing.
- 36:16SPEAKER_03: So anytime there's a shot, they're screaming at the TV, everybody around them, like the atmosphere for that, and it's something so trivial, and something it's just a normal Monday night, makes such a difference for that side of things, I think.
- 36:28SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, I 100% agree.
- 36:30SPEAKER_01: I think it's it would add a lot of like extra excitement uh for the game of hockey, and I think it creates more of an environment.
- 36:37SPEAKER_01: And also, I've been thinking about like I think the sports betting should actually take off, but I also think like I was thinking, and I thought the the the I the idea feel the idea of like uh um growing hockey or growing the sport using alcohol.
- 36:54SPEAKER_01: I also think hockey needs to like um maybe first create an identity, but also then also like own the identity.
- 37:02SPEAKER_01: Like I think you said about uh the cricket, but cricket is like a bit of a posh sport as well.
- 37:07SPEAKER_01: I think they just own the poshness and just make it theirs and like be like dress fancy and go to a cricket game or whatever.
- 37:14SPEAKER_01: But like I think you need to like hockey needs to buy into it maybe a little bit more.
- 37:18SPEAKER_01: Don't don't be something that that we're not.
- 37:20SPEAKER_01: We are like a family sport that we we are in Holland.
- 37:23SPEAKER_01: It's like drinking also like adds to hockey.
- 37:27SPEAKER_01: It's like going to a pub, go to like a like a silly pub and like get hockey players there, like the big uh I don't think cans of beer.
- 37:34SPEAKER_01: Is it like cans?
- 37:35SPEAKER_01: I don't know what how you call it, like the kegs.
- 37:38SPEAKER_01: Kegs, that's what I mean.
- 37:40SPEAKER_01: Like we need to like own that more.
- 37:42SPEAKER_01: Like the hockey parties is like I think if you ask anyone who comes from across um the border and comes into Holland plays hockey, is always talking about the hockey parties, like own it a bit more.
- 37:54SPEAKER_01: I think that will also grow the game.
- 37:56SPEAKER_02: I think it's a good point.
- 37:57SPEAKER_02: I also like I did think of another idea.
- 38:00SPEAKER_02: I think you I think firstly, anyone who's tuned into our last two episodes must like well.
- 38:06SPEAKER_02: I mean, I don't know if we're growing the game.
- 38:08SPEAKER_02: Or this there's a lot of people out there who probably aren't that happy with us.
- 38:11SPEAKER_02: Our last two episodes have been right.
- 38:14SPEAKER_02: Drink more booze and bet more.
- 38:16SPEAKER_02: I'm not sure that's like that PC, but I love it.
- 38:19SPEAKER_02: It's pretty, it's pretty good fun.
- 38:20SPEAKER_02: I did think also another way of growing the game, I was just thinking the other day, is like we don't, you know, we talked about like player promotion and how to like get people's names out there more.
- 38:31SPEAKER_02: It's like there's such simple ways of doing it that we never do.
- 38:34SPEAKER_02: So in hockey, sorry, in football, um, in lots of in basketball, I know this because I follow them.
- 38:39SPEAKER_02: There is stuff like player of the month, there is team of the year, there's obviously we've already talked about the all-stars.
- 38:47SPEAKER_02: There's like all this stuff that I think you could do to like promote people, to like add sponsors.
- 38:54SPEAKER_02: It's like you can be the sponsor of player of the month, and all you have to do is give like a bottle of champagne, but then automatically someone's rooting for that award, someone's rooting for this.
- 39:04SPEAKER_02: We used to do it at England Hockey League about a player, a team of the year.
- 39:09SPEAKER_04: End of season, yeah.
- 39:10SPEAKER_02: I'm not gonna lie, like you think about it when you're playing, you're like, shit, I want to be in the team of the year.
- 39:14SPEAKER_03: Like let's not bring this, let's not bring this up, Phil.
- 39:17SPEAKER_03: Why?
- 39:18SPEAKER_03: Do you remember playoffs when I was in team of the year?
- 39:21SPEAKER_02: Oh yeah.
- 39:24SPEAKER_02: Brendan was in Brendan was in a team of the year.
- 39:27SPEAKER_03: I was in team of the year, it got to my head.
- 39:29SPEAKER_03: Uh, I got a green and a yellow in the first game of playoffs for us trying to get promotion.
- 39:35SPEAKER_03: I was Cardiff's best player.
- 39:37SPEAKER_03: Oh, and I gave them two goals.
- 39:39SPEAKER_01: Yeah, in Holland, we we now have like the Golden Stick Award.
- 39:43SPEAKER_01: And like every week the player of the week gets uh gets a vote.
- 39:47SPEAKER_01: It is a bit of a popularity contest because like uh it's like a voting system.
- 39:52SPEAKER_01: So uh the player who gets his family and like friends or friends uh to vote on you will win the award.
- 39:58SPEAKER_01: Uh that's that's how simple it is, but at least it's like creating some buzz around hooky.
- 40:04SPEAKER_01: So I think it's really good.
- 40:05SPEAKER_01: We used to have a system in which like uh the coach of uh of both teams could like give away a score, but they give they could give five points, three points, one point to one player each game.
- 40:18SPEAKER_01: So then you at the end of the season you had the player with the most amount of points, and uh the player with the most amount of points became the player of the year.
- 40:26SPEAKER_01: So I think that's like an MVP.
- 40:27SPEAKER_01: So I think that's it creates a buzz.
- 40:29SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I just don't I just don't think they're that difficult to organize.
- 40:34SPEAKER_03: And I think it yeah, I I'm with I'm with I'm with you, Phil.
- 40:38SPEAKER_03: I completely agree.
- 40:38SPEAKER_03: I think it's something quite it's it's it's an easy win.
- 40:41SPEAKER_03: I also think like what's quite cool is watching your like hockey NL, like there always seems to be a few goals from the weekend put on hockey and L or icons Insta.
- 40:50SPEAKER_03: Like ours, you don't even see like a player of the week, play of play of the week, so like a certain goal someone does, or a certain dive or save or something.
- 40:59SPEAKER_03: Like there's nothing from our league that goes viral, really, and it's a real missed opportunity.
- 41:05SPEAKER_03: Bear in mind, all our game footage is in one place, so you could actually quite easily find like your top five goals from the weekend, like even something like that.
- 41:14SPEAKER_03: I remember the German League used to do top 10 goals, and it was like a three-minute video on YouTube.
- 41:19SPEAKER_03: It was class because it was just top ten goals, men's and women's from the weekend done straight away, and it's like that kind of stuff, I think, is quite cool.
- 41:26SPEAKER_02: Yeah, but even like going globally, like the pro league, what we love, like they don't have a team of the year, they don't have a player of the month, they don't have anything, and it's like that's you know, these are ridiculous.
- 41:40SPEAKER_03: Like they do star awards, though, don't they?
- 41:42SPEAKER_03: That's like the closest thing you get.
- 41:44SPEAKER_02: But this again, this is the thing.
- 41:46SPEAKER_02: You look at the NBA, they have a sixth man a year, they have a most improved player, they have a defensive player of the year, they have a rookie of the year, like all NBA.
- 41:55SPEAKER_02: Yeah, we have all that they have three all NBA teams where you try and make the you know the best three teams in the NBA is kind of self-explanatory.
- 42:03SPEAKER_02: But like this is the thing, it just doesn't make any sense to me how no one's thought of this before and thought, oh, that's a dead simple fix.
- 42:11SPEAKER_02: Why don't we just do that?
- 42:12SPEAKER_03: And then they've probably thought about it, but thought it's too much effort, I'll be honest.
- 42:16SPEAKER_03: Yeah, fair enough.
- 42:17SPEAKER_01: Anyway, I don't think that maybe they didn't think about by the way.
- 42:19SPEAKER_01: Uh talking about this growing the game.
- 42:21SPEAKER_01: Um, we gave a shout-out to Ramon Min, the guy who keeps all the stats for like yeah, he messaged me as well.
- 42:29SPEAKER_01: That he he listens to the pot.
- 42:32SPEAKER_01: Yeah, great guy.
- 42:33SPEAKER_01: So, Ramon, thanks for listening.
- 42:35SPEAKER_01: Maybe you could do some stats for um when people uh like start listening to our pot or stop or whatever.
- 42:45SPEAKER_03: That's very specific, you thank you.
- 42:47SPEAKER_03: I think like you put your point's so valid though, like it's such an easy win, and it just gets the names more they become more household names the more people like they're on they're on show and the more available.
- 42:58SPEAKER_03: Like, I know each nation's have got like one player that everybody seems to have heard of.
- 43:03SPEAKER_03: Like, whether it's if it's our men's side, it'll be Sam Ward, if it's the Dutch side, it'll be Jorick Crohn.
- 43:08SPEAKER_03: It's like there are certain people that are like very household names, but that's because they're the only individuals that ever get pushed for interviews and this, that, and the other.
- 43:17SPEAKER_03: I think just more like just more exposure for each each nation or each league or whatever it is will just make a massive difference.
- 43:26SPEAKER_01: So yeah, and it just like I think every sport needs like like what made golf like world like more worldwide than it already was was when like tiger came up, or when um with with tennis it was Federer, or with uh with like uh and with uh the basketball it was Michael Jordan.
- 43:43SPEAKER_01: Like I think you need kind of like heroes and like figures that that that grow the sport, it's not the sport itself, but it's like the people that play it that make it like good.
- 43:52SPEAKER_01: That's what's viral.
- 43:54SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so you need like and it's hard to like create it, but I think you need like this guy, like this uh.
- 44:00SPEAKER_02: poster boy or post a girl that like makes the grain makes the gri the the game grow massively nice I think um okay well uh Brendan or you but I'll give you the choice do we do Brendan's 20 second challenge or do we do shit or hit?
- 44:15SPEAKER_02: Shit or hit first one a member of the EG Faithful got in touch.
- 44:21SPEAKER_01: Um he got or he or she got told to F off at the finals uh by a Serbaton fan uh complaining that it's a hockey not a football match is is respectful chanting a shit or a hit it's a shit respectful chanting is shit like people need to one people need to get get off their high horse and stop complaining about everything in life especially you guys in Britain you're so fucking uh soft that that annoys me and there's and again it's also in Holland because there's also always someone who has who's worrying about something they shouldn't be worried about it's just words it's just someone making fun and it's and like it's not hockey it's football yeah we'll never grow as a sport if we keep saying it's hockey not football just fucking let them scream a little bit have some fun get drunk all we do all we do here at last together is promote some like hooliganism alcohol betting it's not that bad people get off your high horse live a little I think I think it'd be this this kind of goes to the point of like who would you have in certain stands um but like EG Faithful I think are great so like they're a genuine group of like people who like hockey we've we've done to hockey okay cool sorry to cut you off but we've we have talked about the EG Faithful a few times I was just gonna say they'd be in the 18 plus stand yeah the person who play who's supporting Serbon with the cup of tea is in the in the family stand I took your point okay I feel like this guy's got a bit of a bee in his bonnet he's obviously been sent off for this but Brent Smith said umpires who wait for you to hit the ball away and then send you off for it so they wait to blow their whistle until you hit the ball away and then blow their whistle just before and send you off you it's it's so shit.
- 46:29SPEAKER_01: It's shit so shit there are umpires that 100% go out of their way to look for these people as well we all know this one that we've come against yeah I've just been thinking about like I've actually like done some thinking I was thinking we like we need umpires let's just you need umpires but I like who wants to be an umpire like what makes it but what makes it fun you know what I mean like why would you become an umpire everybody bitches at you the whole time but the one thing that makes me think you want to be an umpire is that you have some power right you have a you have a little say in something probably all the umpires have have have nothing to tell at home so they go to hockey pitch and tell everyone like they're the boss so I think that's what makes them like like it's it's a hobby for them so they have to make a little fun and I think they make it fun by just sometimes doing a little shithy of their own that's my like thought about they're like like what's the coolest thing a referee can do give a card so I'm gonna look for every excuse to like be really like give a corner give a card fuck off get off get off my bitch like I think that's what like you has branded all umpires as little bitches though that's basically what he should he also called every international player a bitch last week because we have to listen to what people do.
- 47:56SPEAKER_02: So I mean it's not that offensive anymore because also it's just you're thought of the week I think let's just go with that that's why umpires umpire um I got taught that you sorry do you want to answer no I just like I think deep down everyone in this world is a bitch including me.
- 48:16SPEAKER_02: Thank you okay excellent stuff 100 the title of the episode that's 100% the title of the episode that is 100% it also when you stop taking shit so literal and so personal it's sometimes that's just the way it is you shut up also when you started it saying I've been doing some thinking I thought you were going to be all philosophical but all you were thinking was that's a bitches it's about as deep as you can see that's why you you butcher my whole like theory I'm just saying um no no no stop right a ball polisher now my friend Reese Gamman told me about this saying and I can't believe that I'd never heard it before but I thought I really liked it.
- 48:59SPEAKER_02: The saying a ball polisher so someone who has too many touches to the ball and doesn't do that much with it's called a ball polisher.
- 49:09SPEAKER_03: That's you yeah that's I would like that is a great saying what do you think are we saying the saying is so about the saying yes hit 100% hit yeah it's a hit okay it's a hit and it applies to Philip broper.
- 49:24SPEAKER_01: Name someone else we have a youngster from we have a youngster for Surbiton called Matt Houston who is a definition ball polisher just loves it loves one of these loves it yes yeah sever is a bit of a ball polisher as well he likes he likes to he he can dribble like uh incredibly well but he's also and you I don't know if you guys know him yet Flores Middendorp he played against you guys in the pro league yeah he's fucking unreal with like a rightful dribble but he like he doesn't have like the the like the sheer speed to just accelerate past someone so you always find him like eliminating someone like three times in a row jack Jack Waller always always polishing his balls right you wrote down a couple you uh black hockey shoes from Adidas I actually got this one sent in yeah by uh by an avid listener I think you know him Brendan I think you know him I'm not gonna reveal his name just yet Alex from bear shot oh my god yeah he actually sent this one in that's so he wants he he does he does like I'm gonna talk for he he he wants you to contact him every like maybe once not the way he spoke to me last time oh we're getting into a bit of a counseling session yeah we're not it's all good but he's he's he's he's a he's a he's like a a really um he's a fan of the show he listens to to us a lot and also to you Brendan so he kind of still loves you I think he's a he's a good guy he's a good guy he's a really oh there you go it's water under the bridge he's a and he said black hockey shoes from IDS I think they're also shit I I wear them but I think they're shit they remind me of the old like old school pumps that you used to get at primary school they're so shit they just look budget yeah they look but I don't like it as well but I do like um it's a bit contrary to what I think about football shoes because I love like the football shoes the like the simple black and whites from Adidas yeah I love those like the players who play with those but I think in hockey it looks yeah exactly it looks a bit budget or it looks like they look big I don't know it's shit yeah I agree and I had I yeah I had this one because it's um it's maybe not rational but I hate someone who has this that like I hate the Samsung phones people that have a Samsung phone it's completely irrational I know because it's a it it but I never I don't have a lot of people who have them but the ones who have them are always the types there's probably some people listening that have a Samsung phone but you like it's always the the the weird motherfuckers shower yeah exactly no no my my issue isn't with some everyone has an Apple yeah like it's okay to be different but not phone wise just to provide an iPhone I've got two issues with Samsung phones one is the people who have them are so proud of having them it drives me lot mad secondly they always demand that they've got the best camera so they have to take the photos and you can't share them there's no easy way of sharing those photos to everybody else with obviously with like an iPhone you can airdrop you can you can send it it's so easy it's we're all about connecting with each other.
- 52:53SPEAKER_03: Samsung's is like I watch your email I'll send it to you via fuck off I don't want it an email why are you making this so complicated just as you say get an iPhone like everybody else and stop being so proud of yourself.
- 53:04SPEAKER_02: Stop you you stop stop Brendan that was your moment of the series congratulations yeah this is why we love you sometimes I've got it in me just sometimes right yeah that that's pretty good users I'm not getting involved because I completely agree with everything you just said it was always a type I don't understand why that is yes if you messed down the street you can tell who it is you can tell look at them Samsung music maybe maybe we'll do a a live a live lineup and we'll just get people off the street we'll get accused we can do we can do um we can do a reveal so you you show people you show each other some picture who you already know if they've got one or don't have one and then it can we can guess right we'll do it we'll try and do an Instagram post for that just just for you Pimbren okay right the last we'll finish off on the 20 second challenge now I've got a 20 second challenge for all of us this week um Brendan you're gonna go first you're gonna do your career in 20 seconds your hockey career in 20 seconds are you ready yeah uh as a junior I started as a forward multiple injuries later on now a centre back trying to trying to survive in the world of hockey um a few breakdowns a few mistakes what a few things uh just trying to get up every time I get knocked down okay start quite accurate by the way I think that was pretty good in Bretton but I have another shit a hit real quick like oh god when people say and a lot of stupid people are in this world when they say fall down seven times get up eight have you ever thought about it is the most fucking stupid thing there is how can you stand up eight times when you've only fallen down seven you can only get up the amount of times you've actually fallen down people never seem to really think I thought you were gonna say is is that like a thing where like what do you put in a toaster no no no you've right because you people always say you get up once more than you get knocked down but you can how can you get up unless you start on the floor and you just get up I understand your point it was just more is this yeah it's not related to what you're thinking Phil that's a riddle is it also on like an no it's not a riddle Bren it's just not being fucking stupid um just want to clarify Brent what do you put in a toaster bread congratulations um okay uh yeah you but I thought you meant maybe someone putting that on their Instagram bio or something and I was like okay that's I'm with you there no it always annoys me when people say yes fall down seven this time I think no you're fucking stupid you cannot get up more than you fall down it's not a shit or hit then it's just you saying these are it's you it's one of the things that wants to put the world to rights with can I do one people oversharing on Facebook stop just text your friend or that or people just saying today's been tough not explaining why today's been tough just putting today's been tough so then you obviously get a few people being like oh why I don't want to talk about it or they say you fucking do don't you they say want to talk about it they say what's up mate but they put M and then an eight yeah like and is it called a what's it called acronym may you shorten something like a word or what's it called ah never mind fuck it go on thank you right you we need your your career in 20 seconds okay go I wasn't really prepared for this to be honest my career but do I need club hockey do I need club hockey or international what do you want are you eight seconds in oh we've already started well just like how I am in life it's been a hell of a ride chaotic as fuck stop yeah that was poor yeah but you you you didn't oh you now you realize how hard it is don't you there's not there's not that's that's what she said Brendan that's what she said by the way you did that's that's it's the same with you starting the episode you just you decide when it starts I didn't wasn't prepared to start yet you just said yeah it's eight seconds in I didn't know we started Phil like we we never give context like I that's okay Phil you're five seconds in hockey career still 15 left you got his hood up and badass you're at today isn't he well three three two one oh Phil that was the most shit one I've had in a while that's what you do are you okay it's so sassily so sassy no I'm not okay I hate to break it to you but when you start the episode by basically telling Phil that he's the biggest bitch out of all of us unfortunately behaviors like that do not defend your comment by the way Rory is too over bar also not making the cut this year Brendan the it's it's clearly the creed 20 second challenge for a reason we're gonna give you your final one okay your perfect meal it's starter main side dessert and drink 20 seconds start now oh my god uh jesus uh peeking spare ribs for starter main um docking plum sauce with egg fried rice cider prawn crackers uh dessert ben and jerry's oh that's a real pan and drink and drink drink drink um oh oh cider apple cider such a bad meal you're like you're on fire today that's not a great meal though is it that's um i mean i would never choose ribs i'd choose appetizer special for one porn crackers for a side is poor choice yeah exactly that's what i mean i just panicked man just choose french fries as a cider you can never go wrong a french but like with ducking plum sauce are you mental i have no clue what ducking plum sauce is oh it's a cracking uh chinese dish oh oh in fact i go cha su bau as my starter every time i don't know why i yeah like and that's and that's not how it works phil just starts and then afterwards you cannot say anything anymore if it's 20 seconds or not brand to be fair the 20 seconds made me panic that's that's as simple as it is yeah but did you see how Phil started now and the 20 seconds start now it that's that's fair i'm i'm i'm a little bit worried about you are you okay he's stressing out because Rory's too over mate he's just said right well this this has been um a fun episode we've we've really flitted about here and I think it's been excellent so well done both of you I think you both deserve a gold star um especially you Brendan hoodie you can go away uh very much acting like a hoodlump is out of control masters you maybe is not the one we'll people let us let us know do you want hoodyyup to stay or do you want him to go send us an email at hoodyyoop at gmail.com
