Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Big story today. The US Vigual Reserve going to lower
- 0:02Speaker 1: interest rates inside the next half hour. Bingji higher as
- 0:05Speaker 1: with US our US correspondent Binji.
- 0:07Speaker 2: What are they picking, Well, we don't know yet, but
- 0:10Speaker 2: it's going to be lower than what it was, which
- 0:13Speaker 2: has been a very high level, the highest in decades
- 0:17Speaker 2: five points three percent. It's been hovering around and it's
- 0:20Speaker 2: going to drop. And it's going to drop because the
- 0:23Speaker 2: inflation numbers have improved so drastically in the United States. Now,
- 0:28Speaker 2: this is a crucial announcement both in the United States
- 0:31Speaker 2: but also around the world. We'll take the US first.
- 0:34Speaker 2: It is the last time that America's Central Bank will
- 0:38Speaker 2: be able to make a change to the interest rate
- 0:41Speaker 2: to burring costs before November's election between Kamala Harris and
- 0:45Speaker 2: Donald Trump. And this of course an indication that the
- 0:48Speaker 2: economy from the inflation front, which has been a big
- 0:51Speaker 2: issue in this election, is improving. That is a boost
- 0:55Speaker 2: then for the vice president, but of course still a
- 0:57Speaker 2: few weeks to go to find out what sort of
- 1:00Speaker 2: it might have on growth, which of course could play
- 1:03Speaker 2: into the hands potentially of former President Donald Trump. The
- 1:06Speaker 2: reason this matter is beyond these shores even though of
- 1:10Speaker 2: course it is Americans who will be most affected by
- 1:12Speaker 2: the Church change, is that there are central banks the
- 1:15Speaker 2: world over that are tied to the dollar, and so
- 1:18Speaker 2: their economies will be impacted too. And lower interest rates,
- 1:22Speaker 2: which we think will be the outcome when the decision
- 1:25Speaker 2: is made very shortly, will also affect how investors across
- 1:30Speaker 2: the planet will invest in, you know, for example, stocks
- 1:35Speaker 2: over savings accounts. So this is a significant decision and
- 1:39Speaker 2: we think it will be lowered by probably quarter percent,
- 1:42Speaker 2: maybe even half a percent. And again, as I say
- 1:45Speaker 2: the last time that that would happen before Americans go
- 1:47Speaker 2: to the polls.
- 1:47Speaker 1: Yeah, we're going to check in with Mike Jones, BE
- 1:49Speaker 1: and Z chief economists and just a stick and on
- 1:51Speaker 1: what that rate cut over in the States might mean
- 1:53Speaker 1: for us here. Very quickly though the White House were
- 1:56Speaker 1: they aware of it's allegedly is Rael behind the attack
- 2:01Speaker 1: on his the pages? Did the White House known advance?
- 2:04Speaker 2: They said not, And that even more remarkable given the
- 2:07Speaker 2: fact that one of the Biden administration's senior advisors has
- 2:12Speaker 2: been in the Middle East trying to sort of cease
- 2:15Speaker 2: fire for Gaza. That is an addition to the U
- 2:17Speaker 2: S Secretary of State Anthony Blincoln, who's in Egypt again,
- 2:21Speaker 2: holding tours, none talks, None of them were made aware.
- 2:24Speaker 2: There was a very brief phone call between Israel's defense
- 2:27Speaker 2: secretary and America's Defense Secretary, Lloyd Austin, literally minutes before
- 2:32Speaker 2: those pages started exploding, and in it Israel, we're told
- 2:37Speaker 2: explained to the United States that they will be conducting
- 2:39Speaker 2: an operation in Lebanon soon, but no details were shared.
- 2:43Speaker 2: And of course there had been developments in past hours
- 2:45Speaker 2: two where there had been even more explosions, this time
- 2:48Speaker 2: of walky talkies across the country. So clearly still not
- 2:52Speaker 2: the end of that.
- 2:53Speaker 1: Story, absolutely, Binji, thank you for that, Binji, Hi are
