- 0:00Speaker 1: Joining us now is Matt Gorman, communications director for the
- 0:02Speaker 1: National Republican Congressional Committee. So give us a sense, Matt,
- 0:06Speaker 1: of what you're making so far. Early with Virginia. We
- 0:10Speaker 1: do know that the Democrats have been able to take
- 0:12Speaker 1: that with the governor, but going forward, does that signal concern?
- 0:17Speaker 2: It's really the story is no surprises as of yet.
- 0:20Speaker 2: We know that Spanberger is going to have kind of
- 0:22Speaker 2: a long kind of runway. I'm curious to see if
- 0:25Speaker 2: your coattails can pull Jake Jones over the line. That
- 0:28Speaker 2: really was the only mystery to me going into tonight.
- 0:32Speaker 2: I'm also watching very closely New Jersey, as Rick pointed out,
- 0:35Speaker 2: that was such a swing towards Trump. If Hitdarelli can
- 0:39Speaker 2: keep it to around the Kamala Harris margin five seven points,
- 0:43Speaker 2: that I think would I would expect Republicans to start
- 0:46Speaker 2: investing there in preparation of maybe twenty twenty eight, but
- 0:49Speaker 2: again only if that margin is that five to seven points.
- 0:52Speaker 2: But other than that, seems like everything was going as
- 0:55Speaker 2: expected so far.
- 0:57Speaker 1: Are you concerned at all that a number of Democrats
- 0:59Speaker 1: have been able to seemingly campaign primarily as a referendum
- 1:03Speaker 1: on President Trump?
- 1:05Speaker 2: Not necessarily in these states. I think, as John pointed
- 1:07Speaker 2: out at the start of the coverage, these are away games.
- 1:10Speaker 2: I mean, look, it's no surprise that in these sort
- 1:12Speaker 2: of blue states these would resonate. Also, both of these
- 1:15Speaker 2: states have among the highest population of college educated voters
- 1:19Speaker 2: in the Trump era that is becoming increasingly the Democratic base.
- 1:23Speaker 2: Now again, what I'm watching are those Latino voters like
- 1:26Speaker 2: in Passaic County. I know for a fact where I
- 1:29Speaker 2: live in northern Virginia, liberal turnout Democrat turnout was off
- 1:32Speaker 2: the charts. But can we do a little bit better
- 1:36Speaker 2: kind of in the Hampton Roads area. I'm very curious
- 1:37Speaker 2: to see about that. I think that would have the
- 1:39Speaker 2: key for the j Jones Miars race for Attorney General.
- 1:43Speaker 1: There you mentioned Jay Jones. Anything else that you're watching
- 1:46Speaker 1: in particular tonight?
- 1:47Speaker 2: The last thing I'm watching is ken Mom Donnie in
- 1:50Speaker 2: New York. Once the polls closed there at nine pm Eastern,
- 1:52Speaker 2: can he get to a majority. I'd be very curious there.
- 1:56Speaker 2: If he can, maybe he can claim a mandate to
- 1:58Speaker 2: the city council and Governor hokel Up in Albany to
- 2:01Speaker 2: enact some more of his agenda.
- 2:04Speaker 1: Any idea why President Trump took such an interest in
- 2:07Speaker 1: the mayoral race here in New York City.
- 2:09Speaker 2: I think, certainly it's his hometown. Certainly no surprise there.
- 2:13Speaker 2: But also look, I think he likes a foil him
- 2:17Speaker 2: endorsing Cuomo. I think said less about Cuomo, but also
- 2:20Speaker 2: elevating Mom Donnie. It is a gift to our party
- 2:23Speaker 2: to have someone like Mam Donnie as mayor of New
- 2:25Speaker 2: York and also the media capital of the world. So
- 2:28Speaker 2: you're going to be seeing a lot more of Mam
- 2:30Speaker 2: Donnie over the next year or so in Republican commercials
- 2:34Speaker 2: and TV ads as we go into the midterm elections.
- 2:37Speaker 2: So elevating him providing a foil for both Trump but
- 2:40Speaker 2: Camberley also Mam Donnie in Trump benefits both of them.
- 2:43Speaker 1: All right, mac Orman, thank you so much for your
- 2:45Speaker 1: time and insight. Really appreciate it. I want to stay
- 2:48Speaker 1: there with Mom Donnie with a race for mayor of
- 2:50Speaker 1: New York City. Many people have suggested, even when I
- 2:54Speaker 1: had a chance to talk with Curtis Lee, what he
- 2:55Speaker 1: said that he had been offered ten million dollars to
- 2:58Speaker 1: get out of the race, yet he stayed a number
- 3:02Speaker 1: of people were concerned that he would split the vote
- 3:05Speaker 1: and potentially calls mom Donnie to win, which is what
- 3:07Speaker 1: Donald Trump has said, which is what Andrew Cuomo has said.
- 3:10Speaker 1: Is already there there?
- 3:12Speaker 3: I mean, I think there really is, and I think
- 3:13Speaker 3: that Matt puts something we should all be watching. Does
- 3:17Speaker 3: mom Donnie get to over fifty percent of the vote.
- 3:19Speaker 3: If he's below fifty percent of the vote, you know,
- 3:22Speaker 3: first of all, it will be harder for him to
- 3:23Speaker 3: claim the man that he needs, not just to bring
- 3:26Speaker 3: the city council along, he needs the governor, he needs
- 3:29Speaker 3: the state legislature because you know, New York City depends
- 3:33Speaker 3: a lot on what happens in Albany, So that's a
- 3:36Speaker 3: big factor. And then the other thing, just in terms
- 3:39Speaker 3: of Mom Donnie as this national figure and this leader
- 3:42Speaker 3: for the Democratic Party, you have to think fifty percent
- 3:46Speaker 3: is one marker. Does he get to more than fifty percent?
- 3:49Speaker 3: The other market, which he's clearly not going to get to,
- 3:52Speaker 3: is sixty eight percent. Sixty eight percent is the percentage
- 3:56Speaker 3: of votes that Kamala Harris got in New York last
- 4:01Speaker 3: year in a campaign where she lost decisively in the
- 4:05Speaker 3: presidential election. So you know, you'll hear a lot from
- 4:09Speaker 3: moderate Democrats establishment Democrats to push back a little bit
- 4:14Speaker 3: on the idea that the party is now Mom Donnie's party.
- 4:16Speaker 3: That's the direction they have to go. They'll say, wait
- 4:18Speaker 3: a minute. This guy ran in New York City. He
- 4:20Speaker 3: won great campaign, but he didn't even do anywhere near
- 4:24Speaker 3: as well as Kamala Harris did. He didn't even do
- 4:27Speaker 3: as well as Eric Adams did. When he won in
- 4:29Speaker 3: twenty twenty one, he got I think it was sixty
- 4:31Speaker 3: six percent of the vote. Now, obviously it's a three
- 4:33Speaker 3: person raise, it's harder to get to that level. But
- 4:37Speaker 3: I think that the overall turnout in the city will
- 4:39Speaker 3: be a big measure and the margin of victory if
- 4:42Speaker 3: he wins for Mom Donald and to that.
- 4:44Speaker 4: Point, I mean, it would be a huge one for
- 4:46Speaker 4: the progressive wing of the Democratic Party obviously, But depending
- 4:48Speaker 4: on how big that margin is. There are lots of
- 4:50Speaker 4: questions about how it translates from New York City to say,
- 4:53Speaker 4: you know, suburban areas of other political battlegrounds when you
- 4:56Speaker 4: look ahead to the midterms, right, just how far can
- 4:59Speaker 4: you take any lessons that are learned here, And yes,
- 5:01Speaker 4: so much of that depends on the margin and to
- 5:03Speaker 4: John's point, if Mont Donnie wins, in order to get
- 5:06Speaker 4: his agenda passed, a lot of it does rely on
- 5:08Speaker 4: raising taxes in order to pay for things like, you know,
- 5:11Speaker 4: free childcare and other things like that. You're gonna need
- 5:14Speaker 4: to have Albany on board and a governor on board
- 5:16Speaker 4: in order to do that.
- 5:17Speaker 1: And we've heard Donald Trump threaten that if Mom Donnie wins,
- 5:21Speaker 1: he would pull federal funding to the attune of about
- 5:24Speaker 1: seven billion dollars from New York City.
- 5:25Speaker 4: Yeah, and he has made very clear that if Mont
- 5:28Speaker 4: Donnie wins, he is going to cut off a lot
- 5:30Speaker 4: of the cash, the federal cash flow to the city.
