- 0:06Speaker 1: Hello and welcome to Outspoken. It's your dose of the
- 0:09Speaker 1: hottest influencer and pop culture news twice a week. I'm
- 0:13Speaker 1: Amy Torber and coming up on today's show, Justin McKeon
- 0:16Speaker 1: is a no-show again at his court hearing. And Meghan
- 0:19Speaker 1: Markle's new show airs to mixed reviews. But first, as
- 0:23Speaker 1: Queensland and parts of New South Wales brace for Cyclone Alfred...
- 0:27Speaker 1: Millennials and Gen Zers are taking to TikTok in their
- 0:30Speaker 1: droves to share about how they're preparing for the natural disaster.
- 0:34Speaker 1: This is such a scary time for so many people. Yeah,
- 0:36Speaker 1: and we are sending our love to anyone who is affected.
- 0:39Speaker 1: I know that a lot of our listeners will be
- 0:40Speaker 1: caught up in this. I have been absolutely glued to
- 0:43Speaker 1: TikTok because it has been so interesting to see how
- 0:46Speaker 1: this has played out online. I really think that creating
- 0:49Speaker 1: content has become a distraction for a lot of young
- 0:52Speaker 1: people because This is the first cyclone in their lifetime
- 0:55Speaker 1: to cross the South Coast. So there are so many
- 0:58Speaker 1: people who have never experienced a situation like this. And
- 1:01Speaker 1: I feel like their way of connecting with other people
- 1:04Speaker 1: about it is to create content. So we are seeing
- 1:07Speaker 1: all of these Get Ready With Me videos for Cyclone Alfred.
- 1:10Speaker 1: And we're also seeing a lot of people posting about
- 1:13Speaker 1: mass panic buying. It's very reminiscent of COVID times, isn't it? Yeah,
- 1:17Speaker 1: because people are stocking up on toilet paper again, as
- 1:20Speaker 1: well as canned foods. There is barely anything on the
- 1:23Speaker 1: shelves at the moment. I saw a Petuta Advocate headline
- 1:26Speaker 1: that said in the Gold Coast, all of the supermarkets
- 1:28Speaker 1: have run out of fake tan and teeth whitening. Maybe
- 1:32Speaker 1: not the best joke right now, but there are so
- 1:34Speaker 1: many influencers on the Gold Coast. And I think that's
- 1:36Speaker 1: also why we're seeing so many TikTok videos coming out.
- 1:39Speaker 1: You're joking about teeth whitening and fake tan, Amy, but
- 1:42Speaker 1: people are running out of things like bottled water and torches.
- 1:46Speaker 1: They seem to be out of stock everywhere in these
- 1:49Speaker 1: TikTok videos that I'm seeing. We're also seeing how people
- 1:52Speaker 1: are prepping their houses, which I find really interesting. We
- 1:55Speaker 1: live in Adelaide, so we've never had to prepare for
- 1:57Speaker 1: a cyclone. People are filling up their bathtubs with water
- 2:00Speaker 1: in case they run out. They're also making massive ice
- 2:03Speaker 1: cubes so that they can put them in coolers in
- 2:06Speaker 1: case the power goes out and they can't use their fridge.
- 2:09Speaker 1: And they're also tying down a lot of loose items
- 2:11Speaker 1: in their backyards. I saw someone on TikTok saying that
- 2:14Speaker 1: they almost felt FOMO, that they weren't part of the
- 2:18Speaker 1: prep going on for Cyclone Alpha. And I was like,
- 2:20Speaker 1: what the hell is wrong with people? This is actually
- 2:23Speaker 1: an extremely serious incident that's occurring. And people were like, oh,
- 2:28Speaker 1: I wish I was prepping for this. And I love storms.
- 2:31Speaker 1: Do you think it's because it's been five years since COVID,
- 2:34Speaker 1: it's coming up to the anniversary of when all of
- 2:37Speaker 1: the shit hit the fan. And we're sort of reminiscing
- 2:39Speaker 1: on that almost with this nostalgia because we're forgetting about
- 2:42Speaker 1: how awful it was. All we're thinking is at the moment,
- 2:45Speaker 1: people are like, bloody hell, I wish I could have
- 2:47Speaker 1: a couple of weeks at home and oh, wasn't that
- 2:49Speaker 1: funny when everything ran out at the shops? And they're
- 2:51Speaker 1: sort of comparing the two events and thinking, oh, I
- 2:53Speaker 1: wish I could have a couple of days off, but
- 2:56Speaker 1: not facing the reality that people are potentially going to
- 2:58Speaker 1: lose their houses. They're going to get damaged. People are
- 3:00Speaker 1: having to evacuate. There's going to be mass flooding. It's scary.
- 3:04Speaker 1: I mean, I think it just shows the power of
- 3:06Speaker 1: social media. People are seeing influencers, for example, like Tammy
- 3:09Speaker 1: Hembrough prepping for it and thinking, oh, I feel a
- 3:12Speaker 1: bit out of the loop.
- 3:13Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 3:14Speaker 1: I did enjoy seeing her video. So She put up
- 3:16Speaker 1: a TikTok with her husband, Matt Sikowsky, and they showed
- 3:20Speaker 1: how they were getting ready for Cyclone Alfred. Here's what
- 3:23Speaker 1: she said. We're just getting the house all prepared in
- 3:27Speaker 1: case the power goes out and things like that. So
- 3:29Speaker 1: I'm going to show you guys what we get. What's left.
- 3:33Speaker 1: We've got a few things at home already. Never really
- 3:36Speaker 1: been in the middle of a cyclone that's meant to hit.
- 3:40Speaker 2: Right where we are.
- 3:41Speaker 1: Apparently we're on the most destructive side of it too.
- 3:45Speaker 1: The couple also popped into Target and they bought a
- 3:48Speaker 1: massive cooler as well as a lot of drink bottles
- 3:50Speaker 1: and board games. They also stocked up on wine and beer,
- 3:53Speaker 1: which I think is essential if you've got three young
- 3:55Speaker 1: kids stuck in a house when there's a cyclone. Yeah,
- 3:58Speaker 1: and also a lot of baked beans were purchased.
- 4:00Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 4:00Speaker 1: I mean, again, the baked beans surprised me because if
- 4:03Speaker 1: you run out of power, how can you heat the
- 4:05Speaker 1: baked beans up? Are they eating cold baked beans? A
- 4:07Speaker 1: lot of people do eat cold baked beans.
- 4:09Speaker 3: Really?
- 4:09Speaker 1: I used to work with a man and he used
- 4:10Speaker 1: to have for lunch... a can of cold baked beans
- 4:14Speaker 1: with a piece of bread. It was disgusting. Yeah, but
- 4:16Speaker 1: I think he was quite an interesting character, wasn't he? Well,
- 4:19Speaker 1: he was an interesting character, but I mean, in cyclone times,
- 4:22Speaker 1: you have to make do with cold baked beans. Well,
- 4:25Speaker 1: it's interesting because Tammy's house is on the waterfront and
- 4:28Speaker 1: she explained that luckily they're quite high up because they're
- 4:31Speaker 1: worried about the water rising, obviously, with all the storm.
- 4:34Speaker 1: She said she had to reduce the water level in
- 4:36Speaker 1: her pool, though, to try and avoid it spilling over
- 4:39Speaker 1: and flooding into the house. So She seems to be
- 4:41Speaker 1: following a lot of precautions, which is good to see. Yeah, well,
- 4:44Speaker 1: Ashley Bynes is another influencer who's on the Gold Coast.
- 4:47Speaker 1: And she received criticism earlier this week because she flew
- 4:51Speaker 1: to Sydney for a work trip with her husband, Steve,
- 4:53Speaker 1: and they left their kids at home. Yeah, it's been
- 4:55Speaker 1: a bit of a controversial decision. She's faced a lot
- 4:58Speaker 1: of judgment over it. Ashley shared ahead of the flight
- 5:01Speaker 1: that she was really nervous because she's not a great flyer.
- 5:03Speaker 1: She was worried about the bumpy conditions due to the
- 5:06Speaker 1: storm and the evolving weather event. And Many of her
- 5:10Speaker 1: followers were confused why you would leave your kids home
- 5:13Speaker 1: during such an uncertain time. Yeah, because what if your
- 5:15Speaker 1: flight got cancelled and you're literally stuck in Sydney and
- 5:19Speaker 1: your kids are back at home having to fend for themselves?
- 5:21Speaker 1: I mean, obviously she would have had somebody looking after them. Yeah,
- 5:24Speaker 1: I'm sure maybe they're with their grandparents or something. Well,
- 5:27Speaker 1: as she actually had to end up returning home early,
- 5:29Speaker 1: she made an eight and a half hour drive with
- 5:31Speaker 1: her husband back from Sydney because They said they knew
- 5:34Speaker 1: that their flight was going to get cancelled. They were
- 5:36Speaker 1: supposed to fly back into the Gold Coast on Thursday,
- 5:38Speaker 1: which is when the cyclone was supposed to hit. And
- 5:41Speaker 1: in response to the criticism, Ashi ended up sharing a
- 5:45Speaker 1: post from a creator called Her Successful Minds, which opened
- 5:49Speaker 1: up about their feelings about all of the fear and
- 5:51Speaker 1: panic before the cyclone. And I don't know if I
- 5:54Speaker 1: really agreed with this sentiment because it outlined that this
- 5:57Speaker 1: creator didn't watch the news and they didn't engage in
- 6:00Speaker 1: low frequency conversations about the cyclone. Which personally, I don't
- 6:04Speaker 1: think is the best advice. When a natural disaster is
- 6:07Speaker 1: about to hit, you need to stay informed. I don't
- 6:10Speaker 1: know if this is the journalist coming out at me.
- 6:11Speaker 1: But that's a shit response to say, oh, I haven't
- 6:14Speaker 1: actually been keeping abreast of the situation that's going on
- 6:17Speaker 1: because it's so low vibe. And it's sort of acting
- 6:19Speaker 1: as if you shouldn't be across all of the details.
- 6:21Speaker 1: There's so many experts who are putting out really important
- 6:24Speaker 1: warnings for people to evacuate. You need to stay across
- 6:26Speaker 1: these issues. The post also spoke about, you know, what
- 6:30Speaker 1: you focus on grows. If you feel fear, your body
- 6:33Speaker 1: will respond by searching for more fear. So she was
- 6:36Speaker 1: manifesting the end to this cyclone by not actually taking
- 6:39Speaker 1: responsibility and realizing it was occurring, is that? Well, it
- 6:42Speaker 1: sounds like it. The post finished by saying the real
- 6:45Speaker 1: devastation is the panic before anything has even happened. And
- 6:49Speaker 1: I totally understand that there are a lot of media
- 6:51Speaker 1: organizations who do not pump things up and they do
- 6:56Speaker 1: try to make everything seem more dramatic. But in this situation,
- 6:58Speaker 1: there are a lot of experts who are weighing in
- 7:01Speaker 1: saying that this is a very serious incident and you
- 7:04Speaker 1: need to be vigilant and actually plan for this natural disaster.
- 7:07Speaker 1: And I think it's a bit naive to claim that
- 7:09Speaker 1: you're not focusing on it because you don't want the
- 7:10Speaker 1: bad energy and you don't want to let the fear in.
- 7:13Speaker 1: I mean, that's when accidents happen, isn't it? I mean,
- 7:15Speaker 1: that's when you get into a situation where perhaps your
- 7:17Speaker 1: kids are at home alone during a huge cycle. Well,
- 7:20Speaker 1: it was interesting because when Ashley arrived home She made
- 7:23Speaker 1: a point of pointing out that the weather was so
- 7:26Speaker 1: nice and sunny and they went for a big walk
- 7:28Speaker 1: and she was saying it's very calm. Has she heard
- 7:30Speaker 1: of the calm before the storm? I know. And she
- 7:32Speaker 1: then reiterated that, oh, we didn't go out and buy
- 7:34Speaker 1: any extra food. We should be okay for the next
- 7:36Speaker 1: few days. They're running out of food. Like I'm just
- 7:38Speaker 1: putting it out there. I hope that that doesn't happen.
- 7:40Speaker 1: I feel terrible that they're involved in this. They're the
- 7:42Speaker 1: people that won't have the toilet paper.
- 7:44Speaker 3: No. I'm the executive creative director, chief buyer and lifestyle coordinator.
- 7:51Speaker 3: I'm very important.
- 7:53Speaker 1: I decide the direction.
- 7:55Speaker 3: Just decisions, decisions, decisions.
- 7:56Speaker 1: I say what goes in the story. What will that be, darling?
- 8:01Speaker 2: Oh, very little.
- 8:01Speaker 1: Very little. Former husband of Instagram Justin McKeon is in
- 8:05Speaker 1: hot water again after failing to appear for a second
- 8:08Speaker 1: time during his fraud hearing. Amy, can you tell us more? Yeah, well,
- 8:13Speaker 1: earlier this year Justin made headlines When the Herald Sun
- 8:16Speaker 1: revealed he'd been accused of stealing almost half a million
- 8:19Speaker 1: dollars from his former employer, Rocket Brands, while working as
- 8:23Speaker 1: its head of finance. And Justin's employer claimed he'd been
- 8:26Speaker 1: acting erratically and sleeping in the work toilet for up
- 8:29Speaker 1: to four hours a day. And so these allegations, they
- 8:33Speaker 1: rocked the internet when they emerged because it really gave
- 8:36Speaker 1: us some insight into how not everything you see on
- 8:39Speaker 1: social media is a reality. I think that description of
- 8:42Speaker 1: him falling asleep in the bathroom really painted a picture
- 8:44Speaker 1: of how dire the situation had got. There has been
- 8:47Speaker 1: a lot of interest in this court case, mainly due
- 8:49Speaker 1: to the fact that Justin used to be married to
- 8:52Speaker 1: influencer Olivia Rogers. And there were so many questions left
- 8:56Speaker 1: unanswered when the couple broke up in 2022 after just
- 9:00Speaker 1: eight months of marriage, because they really painted this picture
- 9:04Speaker 1: of this perfect life together, that they were the ultimate
- 9:06Speaker 1: power couple in Melbourne. And they seem pretty squeaky clean.
- 9:09Speaker 1: They're always talking about how they were doing dry July
- 9:13Speaker 1: and about, you know, not drinking alcohol. So this was
- 9:16Speaker 1: a bit of a shock for people. Yeah, and I
- 9:18Speaker 1: think it gave people more of an insight into maybe
- 9:20Speaker 1: what was going on behind the scenes and potentially why
- 9:23Speaker 1: this marriage ended so soon. Now, according to fresh reports
- 9:27Speaker 1: from the Daily Mail, Justin appears to have abandoned his
- 9:30Speaker 1: defence in this civil case after failing to appear in
- 9:34Speaker 1: the Supreme Court of Victoria on Tuesday. So Justin was
- 9:37Speaker 1: supposed to mount a defense to the allegations, but he
- 9:40Speaker 1: didn't show up for a second time. Now, according to reports,
- 9:44Speaker 1: Justin's no-show was the final insult to the court. So
- 9:47Speaker 1: it's believed his failure to submit a defense is being
- 9:51Speaker 1: viewed as an acceptance of guilt, which is very big.
- 9:54Speaker 1: In November last year, he also failed to appear in court,
- 9:57Speaker 1: but he then declared that he had engaged a rather
- 9:59Speaker 1: large Melbourne legal firm called Gabali and O'Brien. However, the
- 10:03Speaker 1: court learned on Tuesday that the legal firm had actually
- 10:06Speaker 1: dumped Justin a day before the hearing, which left him
- 10:09Speaker 1: to represent himself. So it makes a bit more sense
- 10:11Speaker 1: why he didn't appear. And his non-appearance might have something
- 10:14Speaker 1: to do with the fact he's also moved back to WA.
- 10:17Speaker 1: So He and his girlfriend, former bachelor contestant Tani Leeson,
- 10:21Speaker 1: it appears they're living together and they recently announced they're
- 10:24Speaker 1: expecting a baby. I mean, this must be a very
- 10:27Speaker 1: stressful time for the couple, but it doesn't appear that
- 10:30Speaker 1: way on their socials. They have been posting as normal. Yeah,
- 10:33Speaker 1: they seem to be living quite a glamorous lifestyle still.
- 10:36Speaker 1: They've been appearing at influencer events. They don't seem to
- 10:39Speaker 1: be embarrassed by the situation or at least want to
- 10:43Speaker 1: look publicly embarrassed by it. They're trying to ignore it. Yeah.
- 10:46Speaker 1: I mean, just because you've moved to WA though, it
- 10:48Speaker 1: doesn't give you an excuse not to fly to Melbourne
- 10:50Speaker 1: for the hearing. No, not at all. And there were
- 10:53Speaker 1: some very serious allegations leveled at Justin during this new
- 10:57Speaker 1: court hearing. So his former employer tendered bank statements to
- 11:00Speaker 1: the court alleging Justin stole more than $ 34, 000 over a
- 11:05Speaker 1: two-day period in August last year. So according to bank records,
- 11:09Speaker 1: at the time of the theft, Justin had just $ 1, 000
- 11:13Speaker 1: in his bank account and it allegedly took him just
- 11:16Speaker 1: a week to spend the money on alcohol, drugs and gambling.
- 11:19Speaker 1: That's really sad. It is very sad. The court also
- 11:22Speaker 1: heard on Tuesday that when Justin was confronted by his
- 11:25Speaker 1: boss in October last year, Justin allegedly admitted to the theft,
- 11:30Speaker 1: telling his boss he had a very serious drug habit
- 11:33Speaker 1: and he'd do his best to repay the money. It
- 11:35Speaker 1: would be so frustrating for Rockets. to be investing a
- 11:38Speaker 1: lot of time and energy into this court case and
- 11:40Speaker 1: to have Justin really treat it with not very much
- 11:43Speaker 1: respect and not turn up. Oh, it would be extremely frustrating.
- 11:46Speaker 1: And as we touched on, this is a civil case
- 11:49Speaker 1: so far, but this could turn into criminal charges.
- 11:53Speaker 2: People say like, what do you want to do when
- 11:55Speaker 2: you grow up? What do you want to be like?
- 11:57Speaker 2: How do you envision your life? I envision my life
- 12:00Speaker 2: like how Meghan Markle is living. Okay. I want to
- 12:02Speaker 2: live on a gorgeous countryside property. I want to wake
- 12:06Speaker 2: up in the morning and be like, oh my God,
- 12:08Speaker 2: a friend is coming over. Let me just casually whip
- 12:11Speaker 2: up a frittata with all ingredients that are from my
- 12:14Speaker 2: garden outside.
- 12:16Speaker 1: Meghan Markle's new show, With Love, premiered on Netflix this
- 12:19Speaker 1: week to mixed reviews. While some critics found joy in
- 12:23Speaker 1: Meghan returning back to her roots, others labeled the show
- 12:26Speaker 1: queasy and exhausting and an exercise in narcissism. Now, for
- 12:30Speaker 1: those who haven't seen it, Amy, can you bring us
- 12:33Speaker 1: up to speed? So this show is an eight-part lifestyle
- 12:36Speaker 1: series hosted by Megan, which is set in a luxury
- 12:39Speaker 1: estate in Montecito, California. And there's been so much discussion
- 12:43Speaker 1: online about the show not actually being filmed at Harry
- 12:46Speaker 1: and Megan's house, which I don't even understand what the
- 12:48Speaker 1: big deal is. This is common practice for TV shows.
- 12:50Speaker 1: Particularly when this couple is so big on their privacy.
- 12:53Speaker 1: There's so many jokes about South Park and we want privacy.
- 12:56Speaker 1: We want privacy. But to be fair, they would look
- 12:58Speaker 1: like complete hypocrites if they said, we really want to
- 13:01Speaker 1: look after our children's privacy. And then they're filming this
- 13:04Speaker 1: huge show in their house. Apparently there's 80 people on
- 13:07Speaker 1: the crew. I'm sure that Megan's house is big enough
- 13:09Speaker 1: to fit them in, but they wouldn't want to disrupt
- 13:11Speaker 1: their family life like that. But it's not even just that.
- 13:13Speaker 1: If you look on more of a local level, Shows
- 13:16Speaker 1: like My Kitchen Rules, they don't even film in some
- 13:18Speaker 1: of the contestants' houses because it might be that the
- 13:21Speaker 1: lighting is not good or the setup of the kitchen
- 13:23Speaker 1: doesn't work for filming. Now, just getting back to the show,
- 13:26Speaker 1: in each episode, Megan is joined by a different celebrity
- 13:29Speaker 1: friend and she shares personal tips and tricks in the
- 13:32Speaker 1: kitchen as well as talking about her career and life.
- 13:36Speaker 1: And everything about this show is aesthetically pleasing. So from
- 13:39Speaker 1: Megan's wardrobe to the ingredients she uses to the cinematography,
- 13:44Speaker 1: I don't think we've seen a lifestyle show like this
- 13:46Speaker 1: since the Martha Stewart show. Yeah, because it's all about
- 13:48Speaker 1: her being the ultimate hostess. And a lot of people
- 13:52Speaker 1: have questioned whether, because obviously Megan is a feminist and
- 13:55Speaker 1: people are saying, oh, how can she be a feminist
- 13:58Speaker 1: and want to be a trad wife? And it's like,
- 13:59Speaker 1: she doesn't want to be a trad wife. The whole
- 14:01Speaker 1: thing is, it's like, you can still be a feminist.
- 14:04Speaker 1: whilst enjoying hosting and cooking nice meals. I know. I
- 14:08Speaker 1: was one of the people who fell in the camp
- 14:10Speaker 1: that they were really excited for this show to drop
- 14:12Speaker 1: and I wanted to watch it instantly. What did you
- 14:15Speaker 1: make of the show? Well, I don't think it is
- 14:17Speaker 1: a surprise to our listeners that we are pretty big
- 14:19Speaker 1: fans of Meghan Markle. So I was really excited to
- 14:23Speaker 1: watch the show. I was a little bit nervous though,
- 14:25Speaker 1: because I'd heard a lot of the criticism about it.
- 14:28Speaker 1: And I didn't want to go in too jaded because
- 14:31Speaker 1: I was worried that I was going to cringe. But
- 14:33Speaker 1: I thoroughly enjoyed it. I'm one of those people who
- 14:36Speaker 1: I loved watching cooking shows growing up and lifestyle shows.
- 14:39Speaker 1: I feel like I love the escapism of it. I
- 14:42Speaker 1: loved Nigella Lawson and being involved in her world and
- 14:46Speaker 1: also shows like Better Homes and Gardens. So for me,
- 14:49Speaker 1: I absolutely loved every second. One of my favorite things
- 14:52Speaker 1: about the show was the fashion. And I know everyone's like, oh.
- 14:56Speaker 1: That's interesting to say that when the focus was food. Well,
- 14:58Speaker 1: I'm just saying, like, I love seeing what she was
- 15:00Speaker 1: wearing because she's such a fashion icon. And everyone's like, oh,
- 15:02Speaker 1: no one wears that when they're cooking. Of course they don't.
- 15:06Speaker 1: It's an aesthetic fucking cooking show. She was wearing so
- 15:09Speaker 1: much white, though. Like, it was, she had at one
- 15:12Speaker 1: stage this jumper over her shoulders while she was preparing something.
- 15:15Speaker 1: And I was like, wow, that looks ultra restrictive. but
- 15:18Speaker 1: so chic at the same time. Is that when she
- 15:20Speaker 1: mentioned that her pants were Zara? Yeah, well, she said
- 15:23Speaker 1: that she likes to dress high-low. So as you said, Amy,
- 15:27Speaker 1: she had her Zara pants on, but then she had
- 15:29Speaker 1: a number of other high-end brands on. I'm sure some
- 15:32Speaker 1: magazine has already broken down the costs of these outfits somewhere. Well,
- 15:36Speaker 1: I was interested to see how TikTok would react to
- 15:39Speaker 1: the show. And unfortunately, I reacted how I thought, quite negatively,
- 15:42Speaker 1: because the platform was flooded with videos of people mocking Meghan.
- 15:47Speaker 1: So people called it awkward, fake. They also labeled her
- 15:51Speaker 1: out of touch for some of the tips and tricks
- 15:53Speaker 1: she shared. So for those who haven't seen it, some
- 15:56Speaker 1: of those tips included adding sparkling water to scrambled eggs
- 16:00Speaker 1: to make them fluffier. I never knew that. What's wrong
- 16:02Speaker 1: with that? Transferring peanut butter pretzels from their original packaging
- 16:06Speaker 1: to a more aesthetically pleasing bag. I mean, if anything,
- 16:09Speaker 1: that was probably the most relatable thing that she's done.
- 16:11Speaker 1: I found it quite funny though, because these were peanut
- 16:13Speaker 1: snacks for her friend, Daniel, who was her makeup artist
- 16:16Speaker 1: on Suits. And she said Oh, he absolutely loves peanuts.
- 16:19Speaker 1: But I'm just putting some writing on there to declare
- 16:22Speaker 1: that there are peanuts in there because it can be
- 16:24Speaker 1: an allergy for some people. Well, that's if he shares
- 16:26Speaker 1: the peanuts. I mean, that's responsible. I think it was
- 16:29Speaker 1: almost an opportunity to show off her beautiful handwriting because
- 16:31Speaker 1: shouldn't she have some calligraphy business beforehand? Yeah, that sounds familiar. Well,
- 16:35Speaker 1: apparently the other unrelatable thing, and I've seen a lot
- 16:37Speaker 1: of this online before the show aired, was the ice
- 16:40Speaker 1: cubes that she made with flowers inside of them. So
- 16:43Speaker 1: her tip was that you shouldn't use tap water because
- 16:46Speaker 1: because they'll come out cloudy and that you should either
- 16:48Speaker 1: use distilled water or boil your tap water. Oh, I
- 16:52Speaker 1: didn't know that. It's not that hard to boil the kettle.
- 16:53Speaker 1: It's not that hard, but I think people are saying
- 16:55Speaker 1: who has time to make ice cubes with flowers in them.
- 16:58Speaker 1: It's quite funny because I felt like a lot of
- 17:00Speaker 1: criticism has also been leveled at how easy some of
- 17:03Speaker 1: the recipes were. For instance, there was, I think in
- 17:05Speaker 1: the second episode, it was all about planning for a
- 17:08Speaker 1: kid's birthday party. And she showed herself making peanut butter
- 17:12Speaker 1: and jelly sandwiches, as well as cucumber sandwiches, and then
- 17:14Speaker 1: using shapes to cut them out. So she had star
- 17:17Speaker 1: ones and heart ones and everyone's like, we all know
- 17:19Speaker 1: how to make a fucking sandwich. And it's like, yes,
- 17:22Speaker 1: but it's the magic of making them appealing for children.
- 17:25Speaker 1: And I actually enjoyed the simpler recipes because I thought,
- 17:29Speaker 1: oh yeah, this is something that I could easily do
- 17:30Speaker 1: at home. Whereas in the third episode, she had this
- 17:33Speaker 1: chef on who was cooking this really intricate Vietnamese recipes.
- 17:37Speaker 1: She lost me on that episode, I have to say.
- 17:39Speaker 1: I'm like, I need the simplicity. Yeah. Well, I just
- 17:42Speaker 1: find it really unfair, the criticism about her being awkward
- 17:45Speaker 1: because she would be second guessing everything she says because
- 17:50Speaker 1: she knows that this show is going to be completely
- 17:52Speaker 1: torn apart by the media and also viewers. And also, like,
- 17:56Speaker 1: do we really expect her not to have this air
- 18:00Speaker 1: of perfectionism in the show? Because if she produced some
- 18:04Speaker 1: stock standard meal and just slopping stuff on plates and
- 18:07Speaker 1: She would have been criticized instantly for being not the
- 18:10Speaker 1: perfect royal. I'm sorry, but in what lifestyle program have
- 18:13Speaker 1: we ever seen someone slobbing around in dirty clothes, making
- 18:16Speaker 1: unappealing food? Like no one wants to watch that. People
- 18:19Speaker 1: want to buy in to the magic of it. And
- 18:22Speaker 1: I just think to me, she wasn't even awkward. I thought,
- 18:25Speaker 1: you know, and people calling her a fucking narcissist. I
- 18:27Speaker 1: thought she came across as pretty down to earth considering
- 18:30Speaker 1: she's married a prince. She's been on a hugely popular show.
- 18:34Speaker 1: One thing that was relatable was she was wearing no
- 18:36Speaker 1: shoes in the kitchen, I noticed. I think that that was,
- 18:38Speaker 1: I mean, maybe it's all the LA grounding and all that.
- 18:41Speaker 1: Remember she came out and said that when she had
- 18:44Speaker 1: Prince William and Kate Middleton over for dinner at her
- 18:47Speaker 1: and Harry's house, they came really formally dressed and she
- 18:50Speaker 1: was wearing jeans and no shoes. I feel like that's
- 18:53Speaker 1: her thing. And I think it was definitely a strategic
- 18:55Speaker 1: decision to make it look like she was at home,
- 18:57Speaker 1: even though we know it's not actually her home. Well,
- 18:59Speaker 1: one of the biggest talking points that's come out of
- 19:02Speaker 1: the show is is whether this type of content is
- 19:04Speaker 1: outdated in 2025. Because there's been a lot of comparisons
- 19:08Speaker 1: made about just how perfect everything appears on the show
- 19:11Speaker 1: and the curated aesthetics made popular on Instagram and in
- 19:14Speaker 1: blogs in 2016. And a lot of these conversations have
- 19:18Speaker 1: stemmed from the fact Megan had a popular lifestyle blog
- 19:22Speaker 1: called The Tig. And so she started this in 2014.
- 19:25Speaker 1: She had to close it down in 2017 once her
- 19:28Speaker 1: relationship with Prince Harry started getting more serious. So the
- 19:32Speaker 1: argument is that this type of content appears to be
- 19:34Speaker 1: disingenuous because people are saying as a society, we've moved
- 19:38Speaker 1: on from the idea that everything needs to be so perfect.
- 19:42Speaker 1: And if you take a look at influencers who are
- 19:44Speaker 1: succeeding in 2025, so many of them are very different
- 19:48Speaker 1: to the influence of 2016. They're very authentic. They have
- 19:51Speaker 1: a personality. I kind of disagree though. I think in
- 19:54Speaker 1: recent times, we've really enjoyed creators like Nara Smith. They've
- 19:58Speaker 1: had a huge surge in popularity because yes, it's not
- 20:01Speaker 1: relatable her cooking in a ball gown, but we love
- 20:04Speaker 1: the magic of it all. We love the theater of it.
- 20:06Speaker 1: I mean, I agree with it in some aspects, especially
- 20:08Speaker 1: when it comes to Instagram, because in 2016, it was
- 20:12Speaker 1: all like flat lay aesthetic images. And most of the
- 20:15Speaker 1: influencers garnered a following for being hot and also rich.
- 20:19Speaker 1: But now because Instagram has moved away from just photos,
- 20:23Speaker 1: people have to actually put out video content and have
- 20:26Speaker 1: more of a personality. And this narrative has of course
- 20:28Speaker 1: continued when critiquing her show One of the biggest gripes
- 20:32Speaker 1: from critics seems to be this rainbow fruit platter that
- 20:35Speaker 1: she created. She has been slammed across the media and
- 20:38Speaker 1: also TikTok for it being something that we'd see on
- 20:40Speaker 1: Tumblr in the early 2000s. I don't see why everyone
- 20:43Speaker 1: has such a problem with this. I thought it was
- 20:45Speaker 1: something really cute that you could make for a kid's
- 20:47Speaker 1: birthday party. Yeah, exactly. And if you look at the
- 20:50Speaker 1: content that's popular on TikTok these days, It is people
- 20:54Speaker 1: reorganizing their pantries in their lavish mansions. I mean, I
- 20:57Speaker 1: regularly watch aesthetic dinner party content. I remember you spoke
- 21:00Speaker 1: on the podcast recently about how you watched a woman
- 21:02Speaker 1: who made a candelabra out of butter. I mean, would
- 21:06Speaker 1: you ever do that?
- 21:07Speaker 3: No.
- 21:07Speaker 1: But do you enjoy watching it? Fuck yes. Well, it's
- 21:09Speaker 1: the more ridiculous that gets the views.
- 21:11Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 21:12Speaker 1: And I've seen a lot of commentary from people saying, well,
- 21:14Speaker 1: not everyone has their own beehive like Megan. And we
- 21:17Speaker 1: don't have time to make bee wax candles like she
- 21:20Speaker 1: did on the show. And there's this rhetoric that's formed
- 21:22Speaker 1: that this show is only for the elite. No, this
- 21:26Speaker 1: show is about escapism. And I, for one, thoroughly enjoy it.
- 21:30Speaker 1: I mean, for example, I watch Real Housewives of LA.
- 21:33Speaker 1: Do I relate to any aspect of their life? No.
- 21:36Speaker 1: But do I enjoy watching it? Yes, of course. Personally,
- 21:38Speaker 1: I would love to go to someone's house and make candles.
- 21:40Speaker 1: That sounds fun to me. We're seeing a lot of
- 21:43Speaker 1: girls now creating, you know, come paint candles with me
- 21:46Speaker 1: at my house. It It's an opportunity to actually get
- 21:48Speaker 1: your friends together and do something creative and have a
- 21:51Speaker 1: themed night. Well, I think TikToker Cora Lakey put it
- 21:54Speaker 1: so well. Let's have a listen to what she said.
- 21:57Speaker 1: If you don't like Meghan Markle's new show, you're a
- 21:59Speaker 1: miserable person. No one had to say it.
- 22:01Speaker 2: And this is coming from someone who has a major
- 22:03Speaker 2: chip on her shoulder.
- 22:04Speaker 1: And listen, my life is falling apart. I mean, this
- 22:06Speaker 1: is literally my setup. Currently, I'm not exactly in a
- 22:09Speaker 1: Santa Barbara estate myself. But what I love about the
- 22:13Speaker 1: show is that.
- 22:13Speaker 3: It's escapism, okay?
- 22:15Speaker 1: It is bringing cinema back to the food space.
- 22:18Speaker 3: We haven't had this really since Martha Stewart and Megan
- 22:21Speaker 3: is giving it to us and more with Santa Barbara Fabulosity.
- 22:24Speaker 1: And I don't care if it's perfectly curated. It absolutely is.
- 22:28Speaker 1: But give the girl a break. What is she supposed
- 22:30Speaker 1: to do? I completely agree with this sentiment. This show
- 22:35Speaker 1: wasn't created for everyone. It was created for people who
- 22:38Speaker 1: like lifestyle shows, cooking shows, and who want to entertain
- 22:42Speaker 1: and get some ideas and some inspiration.
- 22:45Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 22:45Speaker 1: Well, we touched on Megan's blog site, The Tig, before,
- 22:49Speaker 1: and you really can see how important this still is
- 22:51Speaker 1: to Megan because as part of the launch of her show,
- 22:54Speaker 1: she actually surprised a group of fans who had supported
- 22:57Speaker 1: her since her blogging days. So some fans had been
- 22:59Speaker 1: invited to a screening of the show. Let's have a
- 23:02Speaker 1: listen to what went down.
- 23:05Speaker 2: Okay.
- 23:05Speaker 3: We have a big surprise in store for girls who
- 23:07Speaker 3: have been following the Tig and everything else for so long.
- 23:11Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 23:16Speaker 1: I'm telling you. This was very Taylor Swift of her.
- 23:25Speaker 1: I feel like this was right out of her playbook.
- 23:27Speaker 1: It was really cute how she surprised everyone and how
- 23:30Speaker 1: she immediately went and hugged a lot of her fans. Yeah, well,
- 23:33Speaker 1: Megan shared some photos with some of the girls and
- 23:35Speaker 1: there were two who had gone to the extreme of
- 23:37Speaker 1: getting as ever, which is Megan's new brand name, tattooed
- 23:41Speaker 1: on their arms. I mean, if that's not commitment. I
- 23:44Speaker 1: saw that and I was hoping that they were like
- 23:45Speaker 1: temporary tattoos because Unfortunately, I couldn't actually make out what
- 23:49Speaker 1: they said. Well, I was thinking, did they do it
- 23:51Speaker 1: at the event? Because they looked really fresh. Yeah, I
- 23:54Speaker 1: thought maybe they were handed their tattoos. They handed out. No,
- 23:57Speaker 1: they were not. They were real tattoos. Megan posted to
- 23:59Speaker 1: her Instagram story and she had the right explaining that
- 24:02Speaker 1: they said as ever. And I'm like, God, that's a
- 24:04Speaker 1: sign of a bad tattoo. And you have to explain
- 24:06Speaker 1: what it says. Well, one of the biggest viral moments
- 24:09Speaker 1: of the show was a scene where Megan revealed to
- 24:12Speaker 1: her friend Mindy Kaling that she no longer goes by
- 24:15Speaker 1: the last name Markle. Let's have a listen to what
- 24:18Speaker 1: she said.
- 24:18Speaker 2: I don't think anyone in the world knows that Meghan
- 24:22Speaker 2: Markle has eaten Jack.
- 24:23Speaker 1: In the Box.
- 24:24Speaker 3: It's so funny too that you keep saying Meghan Markle.
- 24:26Speaker 3: You know I'm Sussex now. You have kids and you go, no,
- 24:30Speaker 3: I share my name with my children.
- 24:32Speaker 1: Yes.
- 24:33Speaker 3: And that feels so, I didn't know how meaningful it
- 24:36Speaker 3: would be to me, but it just means so much
- 24:39Speaker 3: to go, this is our family name, our little family name.
- 24:45Speaker 1: This seemed to cause a lot of confusion because the
- 24:47Speaker 1: royal family's official last name is Mountbatten-Windsor. Yeah, and everyone
- 24:52Speaker 1: was like, she doesn't even know her last name. But
- 24:54Speaker 1: they're actually incorrect because when Harry was growing up at school,
- 24:58Speaker 1: for instance, and his family were under the Wales family,
- 25:01Speaker 1: so when Prince Charles was Prince of Wales, his last
- 25:04Speaker 1: name was Wales. So he was known as Harry Wales.
- 25:07Speaker 1: And it has evolved throughout his life. So when Meghan
- 25:09Speaker 1: and Harry got married, they were given the title of
- 25:12Speaker 1: Duke and Duchess of Sussex by Queen Elizabeth in 2018.
- 25:15Speaker 1: So that is officially their last name. I think she
- 25:19Speaker 1: knows her last name. I don't think she's getting confused.
- 25:22Speaker 1: I was lapping up any sort of details about Harry
- 25:25Speaker 1: and I really wish that he was one of the
- 25:27Speaker 1: guests who came to visit her. Well, he was in
- 25:29Speaker 1: the last episode. Yeah, well, we didn't get much of him.
- 25:31Speaker 1: But one thing we did discover is that she has
- 25:34Speaker 1: to undersalt her food constantly because apparently Harry loves a
- 25:38Speaker 1: bit of salt. What do you mean undersalt? Well, so
- 25:40Speaker 1: she said she undersalts everything because she knows that her husband-
- 25:44Speaker 1: immediately tosses salt on before even trying the food. So
- 25:47Speaker 1: I am guessing the food at Buckingham Palace is quite tasteless.
- 25:51Speaker 1: Like he has grown up with shit food, it sounds like. Well,
- 25:54Speaker 1: Prince Harry is a man after my own heart because
- 25:56Speaker 1: that is literally me. I put salt on everything. Dale's like,
- 25:59Speaker 1: how can you eat so much salt? Now, a lot
- 26:02Speaker 1: of critics are also focusing on the fact that Meghan
- 26:05Speaker 1: and Harry received a huge amount of money for this
- 26:07Speaker 1: deal with Netflix. So they got $ 100 million as an
- 26:11Speaker 1: overall deal to produce a number of shows including With Love.
- 26:15Speaker 1: And people are saying, well, was this a good financial
- 26:17Speaker 1: decision for Netflix? And there has been a lot of
- 26:20Speaker 1: negative press about With Love receiving terrible viewer ratings, but
- 26:23Speaker 1: it's all focused on platforms like IMDB and also Rotten Tomatoes,
- 26:28Speaker 1: which I wouldn't say were the most highbrow publications. Yeah,
- 26:31Speaker 1: but again, these are people who don't like her, who
- 26:34Speaker 1: don't like lifestyle programs, who don't like cooking programs. Yeah,
- 26:37Speaker 1: and I saw one TikToker saying, I wonder if Netflix
- 26:41Speaker 1: is relying on people hate-watching. I did see that the
- 26:44Speaker 1: show is in Netflix top 10. So obviously a lot
- 26:48Speaker 1: of people have tuned in, which results in it being
- 26:50Speaker 1: a success. So when it came out, it was in
- 26:52Speaker 1: the top 10 in the US and the UK. It
- 26:55Speaker 1: has dropped out since. But I would think that this
- 26:58Speaker 1: was a big success for Netflix because so many people
- 27:00Speaker 1: are talking about it in the press. So many people
- 27:03Speaker 1: are talking about it online. As you said, A lot
- 27:05Speaker 1: of people might just be hate watching it, but it's
- 27:07Speaker 1: bringing people to that streaming service. Well, I mean, clearly
- 27:10Speaker 1: it must be financially viable for them considering they've signed
- 27:14Speaker 1: on as a partner to sell Megan's products with her
- 27:17Speaker 1: on their platform. Yeah, so they have partnered with her
- 27:20Speaker 1: as Ever Brand and she has dropped eight products, which
- 27:24Speaker 1: include Raspberry Preserves. Now, Sophie, you were saying to me
- 27:27Speaker 1: earlier that there's a reason why she calls them preserves
- 27:29Speaker 1: and not jam. Yeah, I found this so fascinating because, again,
- 27:32Speaker 1: I was on high alert with everyone being so critical
- 27:34Speaker 1: of her. And I'm like, is she just being a
- 27:36Speaker 1: wanker by calling them preserves instead of jam? But I
- 27:39Speaker 1: learned through the show that in order for something to
- 27:42Speaker 1: be jam, it has to be 50% sugar, 50% fruit.
- 27:45Speaker 1: And we learnt that Megan doesn't really like sweet things.
- 27:48Speaker 1: She doesn't have a huge sweet tooth because she admitted
- 27:51Speaker 1: that she didn't like honey, even though honey featured a lot.
- 27:54Speaker 3: What?
- 27:55Speaker 1: She has her own beehive. Well, she said she likes
- 27:57Speaker 1: it now that it's top quality honey. Anyway, so basically
- 28:00Speaker 1: she doesn't like it when jam is ultra sweet because
- 28:03Speaker 1: she likes to be able to taste the fruit in it.
- 28:05Speaker 1: So that is why she calls it preserves. Okay. Okay.
- 28:08Speaker 1: Thank you for clearing that up. Well, we also found out,
- 28:10Speaker 1: because remember when she sent out all of her jam
- 28:12Speaker 1: to influencers and she labeled- Wait a sec, didn't she
- 28:14Speaker 1: say the other week that jam is her jam? Well, yes. Well,
- 28:16Speaker 1: she still likes jam. Not as catchy as preserve is
- 28:19Speaker 1: my preserve. Well, exactly. Well, when Mindy was on the show,
- 28:22Speaker 1: she pointed out that she was one of the influencers
- 28:25Speaker 1: to receive Megan's first batch, the first 50 jams that
- 28:28Speaker 1: she sent out. And remember they were numbered. And Mindy
- 28:31Speaker 1: was like, I hope you didn't rate people like as in,
- 28:34Speaker 1: on terms of how good a friend they are, because
- 28:35Speaker 1: I think she received a number in the forties and
- 28:38Speaker 1: Megan was like, no, no, no. I didn't even think
- 28:40Speaker 1: about that in saying that though. I did give my
- 28:42Speaker 1: mom number one. So this is like her MySpace top friends. Yeah. Well, again,
- 28:48Speaker 1: back to the early two thousands.
- 28:49Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 28:50Speaker 1: So the other products she's got on her website are
- 28:53Speaker 1: three types of herbal tea, honey, crepe mix, shortbread cookie mix,
- 28:57Speaker 1: as well as edible flowers, So Sophie, if you do
- 29:00Speaker 1: want to make the flour ice cubes at home, you can.
- 29:03Speaker 1: I was interested that there was nowhere that you could
- 29:05Speaker 1: download the recipes. I mean, you could have done the
- 29:08Speaker 1: old school thing and had your notebook out and written
- 29:10Speaker 1: them down on the show. But I thought it would
- 29:12Speaker 1: have been really lucrative for Netflix or Megan to have
- 29:15Speaker 1: set up a website which listed all of the recipes.
- 29:17Speaker 1: I don't know if that's coming because even with these products,
- 29:21Speaker 1: when I went on the website, I was interested to
- 29:23Speaker 1: see how much she would be charging for each product.
- 29:25Speaker 1: And there are no prices listed. And on the website,
- 29:28Speaker 1: it says available spring 2025. That's what's bizarre. You think
- 29:31Speaker 1: you want to strike while the iron is hot and
- 29:33Speaker 1: there's a call to action.
- 29:34Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 29:35Speaker 1: Well, it prompts you to sign up for a mailing
- 29:37Speaker 1: list and apparently you'll get sent out an email when
- 29:39Speaker 1: it available. And it's actually not officially spring in the
- 29:43Speaker 1: US yet. So spring is officially on the 20th of March.
- 29:47Speaker 1: So it doesn't seem like we have to wait long.
- 29:48Speaker 1: But as you said, if I was Netflix, I would
- 29:51Speaker 1: want those products out right now. I wonder if they
- 29:53Speaker 1: haven't put them out purposely Because perhaps they're expensive and
- 29:56Speaker 1: they think that the bad publicity will overshadow the show
- 29:59Speaker 1: or something. Yeah, but no one's going to be interested
- 30:00Speaker 1: in the products once they've gone through all eight episodes.
- 30:03Speaker 1: They'll forget about it. And what's more bizarre is this
- 30:05Speaker 1: show was held off until March. It was supposed to
- 30:07Speaker 1: air at the end of January, but because of the
- 30:09Speaker 1: LA fires- they didn't put it out. So they've had
- 30:12Speaker 1: extra time to make sure that everything is available. It's
- 30:15Speaker 1: a very strange move. Maybe they've got Megan in the
- 30:17Speaker 1: kitchen trying to pump out all the preserves. Well, that's
- 30:20Speaker 1: all we've got time for today. If you have missed
- 30:23Speaker 1: our Friday debrief, because we chose to add in a
- 30:25Speaker 1: few more influencer topics this week, make sure you are
- 30:28Speaker 1: subscribed to Outspoken Plus because we have done some big
- 30:31Speaker 1: debriefs in recent episodes. Oh, we had a massive debrief
- 30:34Speaker 1: on Thursday's show. I feel like it was quite cathartic
- 30:36Speaker 1: for us, Amy. People will have noticed that Kate has
- 30:38Speaker 1: been absent this week from the podcast. That isn't over
- 30:42Speaker 1: any drama relating to the carpet clean, which I shall
- 30:45Speaker 1: not be mentioning going forward. That is a joke. It
- 30:48Speaker 1: is because her son, Jack, he's had his first cold.
- 30:51Speaker 1: So she has been staying away because Amy and I
- 30:53Speaker 1: have a very low immune system at the moment. So
- 30:56Speaker 1: So it's been sad not having her on. Hopefully she'll
- 30:58Speaker 1: be back next week. I'm pretty sure she will be.
- 31:00Speaker 1: She is dying to be involved in the episodes. Yeah, actually,
- 31:03Speaker 1: that's a good point. Our episode will be dropping on Wednesday, though,
- 31:06Speaker 1: because here in Adelaide it's a public holiday on Monday.
- 31:09Speaker 1: Isn't it a public holiday everywhere? No, it's Adelaide Cup Day. Oh,
- 31:11Speaker 1: I thought it was Labor Day for some reason. I
- 31:13Speaker 1: think it might be Labor Day for some of the
- 31:15Speaker 1: other states, though, but not for everybody. Yes, so keep
- 31:17Speaker 1: an eye out for that episode dropping on Wednesday. Thank
- 31:20Speaker 1: you so much for joining us, though. If you have
