Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Louise Nicholas: Survivors' Advocate on the IPCA report into the handling of complaints against Jevon McSkimming
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: This IPCA report on mc skimming and the top dogs
- 0:02Speaker 1: at police. Instead of investigating a complaint from a young
- 0:05Speaker 1: woman whom mc skimming had an affair with, senior officers
- 0:08Speaker 1: instead believed mc skimming's version of events, arrested the woman
- 0:12Speaker 1: charged it with harassment. Costin knew about the whole thing.
- 0:15Speaker 1: He's on leave from his new big government job. Judith
- 0:18Speaker 1: Collins was asked if this is all corruption?
- 0:20Speaker 2: I think if it walks like a duck and it
- 0:22Speaker 2: quacks like a duck, it's.
- 0:23Speaker 3: Not looking good, is it.
- 0:25Speaker 1: Here's Chambers, But this.
- 0:26Speaker 2: Report speaks for itself. I have no doubt that people
- 0:30Speaker 2: will interpret the report in their own way. It's left
- 0:33Speaker 2: more than just police people down. It's let New Zealanders
- 0:36Speaker 2: down because this is disgraceful.
- 0:37Speaker 3: Baby.
- 0:38Speaker 1: Louise Nichols is with our Sexual violence Survivor and Advocates.
- 0:41Speaker 1: Good morning, Good morning, Ryan. What did you think reading that?
- 0:46Speaker 3: Oh yeah, pretty pretty disgusted and saddened by the whole thing.
- 0:52Speaker 1: To be fair, are you surprised?
- 0:56Speaker 3: I'd like to say yes, but as we know, you know,
- 1:00Speaker 3: you get dumb and dumber in all any organization. And
- 1:05Speaker 3: it wasn't a matter of if this would happen again.
- 1:07Speaker 3: It was a matter of.
- 1:08Speaker 1: When they're saying I didn't inspect a general and they
- 1:12Speaker 1: had kind of fixed things up. Do you think that's
- 1:14Speaker 1: a good move.
- 1:16Speaker 3: Well, yeah, I think so. To be fair, it just
- 1:20Speaker 3: if you've got somebody external in there with a better
- 1:25Speaker 3: insight and having that overlook of the whole organization keeping
- 1:30Speaker 3: everybody on their toes. Yeah, I think it's not a
- 1:35Speaker 3: bad idea.
- 1:36Speaker 1: You were an advisor to police for a wee while
- 1:38Speaker 1: there weren't you Are you still doing that job?
- 1:40Speaker 3: Well? What I do with police is trainings with the
- 1:45Speaker 3: adult sexual assault teams twice a year, and I worked
- 1:50Speaker 3: close with police supporting survivors going through the criminal justice system.
- 1:56Speaker 1: It's those frontline staff. Mandy's just text to show Ryan
- 1:59Speaker 1: how I feel for him. This whole thing is your
- 2:01Speaker 1: average hard working police officers. I mean, they'll be absolutely
- 2:05Speaker 1: raging about this.
- 2:06Speaker 3: Oh without a doubt. And it's and what Nick Skimming
- 2:11Speaker 3: and the others have done does not define our New
- 2:14Speaker 3: Zealand police. It does not at all. They're hard working.
- 2:18Speaker 3: They do a damn good job on the front line,
- 2:21Speaker 3: especially with our survivors of sexual violence and family violence.
- 2:25Speaker 1: You have much to do with Costa.
- 2:28Speaker 3: Not really.
- 2:28Speaker 1: No, what do you think of his partner all this?
- 2:32Speaker 3: Yeah? See that that's where I get angry that you know,
- 2:36Speaker 3: the top cop allowed this to happen, and that to
- 2:40Speaker 3: me was sure. Yeah, no words for him to.
- 2:44Speaker 1: Be fair and he's got a he's sitting right now
- 2:47Speaker 1: as we speak on a five year contract with a
- 2:51Speaker 1: new government job.
- 2:54Speaker 3: Yeah, but he's got a lot to answer for around
- 2:56Speaker 3: this and he needs to front it.
- 3:00Speaker 1: Always appreciate your time this morning. Thank you for being
- 3:01Speaker 1: with me Louise Nichols on the police and the IPCA report.
