Transcript
- 0:00Welcome to the Gill 1918 Project, a podcast series by
- 0:03coaches for coaches, powered by Gill Athletics.
- 0:05Think of it as the Ted Talks of track and field coaching.
- 0:08Short, insightful, and packed with valuable strategies to help
- 0:11you grow as a coach. This episode is part of the
- 0:13Youth and Beginner Series, brought to you by Coach O.
- 0:16In this series, we focus on topics relating to coaching
- 0:19youth athletes, coaching beginner athletes of any age,
- 0:21and supporting brand new coaches as they find their way.
- 0:24With that in mind, let's grow. How's it going everybody?
- 0:29My name is Steve Stone, and I'm the CEO of the Speedy Stone
- 0:33Platform, a space built to highlight, rank, and celebrate
- 0:38youth track and field athletes across the country.
- 0:42First off, I want to take a second and thank cultural
- 0:45platform and the team for putting together this youth and
- 0:48beginner track series. Opportunities like this matter
- 0:52because they give us a chance to talk about the foundation of the
- 0:55sport, not just performance, but purpose.
- 0:59And today I want to talk about something that's really at the
- 1:02core of everything that I do. It's all about celebrating
- 1:07athletes while they're young. You know, when you really sit
- 1:13back and think about it, most athletes don't get recognized
- 1:16until later, high school, college, maybe when they're
- 1:20already elite. That's when their attention
- 1:23comes. That's when the rankings matter.
- 1:25That's when the people start paying attention.
- 1:28But what about before that? What about when they're just
- 1:31getting started? When they're 78910 years old,
- 1:36waking up early, going to practice, running in the heat,
- 1:40competing on weekends, learning discipline before they even
- 1:45fully understand what discipline is?
- 1:48That's where speedy store come from.
- 1:51I saw a gap. I saw talented kids putting in
- 1:55real work and nobody was documented.
- 1:58Nobody was celebrating it. Nobody was saying, hey, this
- 2:03matters right now. So I created a platform that
- 2:06does exactly that. We give out weekly rankings for
- 2:1012 you. We highlight performances,
- 2:13giving the kids a chance to see their name and understand that
- 2:17they're doing something special right now, right in this moment.
- 2:22Because here's the truth. When a young athlete feels seen,
- 2:27it changes everything. They've run different, they
- 2:30train different, they carry themselves different.
- 2:34Confidence starts to build early, and confidence is
- 2:38powerful. It's not just about winning
- 2:41races, it's about belief. I've seen kids go from just
- 2:46showing up to actually believing that they belong.
- 2:50And sometimes all it takes is recognition.
- 2:52Just enough moment when somebody say, hey, I see you, you're one
- 2:57of the best right now, you're on the right path.
- 3:01And let's be real for a second, the sport of track and field,
- 3:05this sport is hard. It's a demanding sport.
- 3:08There's no hiding, there's no bench, there's no timeouts.
- 3:12It's just you, your work, your preparation, your mindset.
- 3:17So when these kids are showing up and doing that at a young
- 3:21age, why would we wait to celebrate that?
- 3:24We don't have to wait until they're ordered to give them
- 3:26their flowers. We don't have to say, let's see
- 3:28if you can keep it up. No, let's celebrate them right
- 3:32now while they're building habits, while they're falling in
- 3:35love with the sport, while they're becoming who they're
- 3:37going to be. Because here's the bigger
- 3:40picture. Not every kid gets going to go
- 3:43pro, not every kid is going to get a scholarship, but every kid
- 3:48can gain something from this sport.
- 3:50Confidence, discipline, resilience, work ethic.
- 3:56And when we celebrate them early, we reinforce those
- 3:59things. We make them want to stay.
- 4:01We make them want to grow. That's also a big part of why I
- 4:06created the Speedy Stone Showcase.
- 4:08It's happening on May 2nd in High Point, NC.
- 4:12This meat isn't just about competition.
- 4:15It's about giving these kids a stage, a moment, an experience
- 4:20where they feel like what they're doing matters.
- 4:23Where they're not just another athlete in the lineup.
- 4:25They're part of something much bigger.
- 4:29Because when kids feel that energy, when they feel
- 4:31recognized, when they feel like people are watching, supporting,
- 4:35and believing in them, it sticks.
- 4:37It carries over. It builds something real, and I
- 4:42say this too. Parents, coaching, even the
- 4:46community, we all play a role in this.
- 4:49It's not just about pushing them to be better, it's about
- 4:53acknowledging when they're already doing well.
- 4:56Even the small things, APR, a strong race, good effort,
- 5:01consistency, that matters sometimes.
- 5:05We move so fast in this sport, always chasing the next time,
- 5:11the next meet, the next go. Then we forget to pause and say
- 5:16you did something great today. And that moment, that
- 5:21acknowledgement, that what keeps kids coming back, that's what
- 5:26keeps them locked in. So when I talk about celebrating
- 5:29athletes while they're young, it's not just about rankings,
- 5:33it's not just about popes. It's about building a culture.
- 5:37A culture where youth athletes are respected, where their work
- 5:41is valued, where their journey matters right now, not just
- 5:46later. Because these kids, they're not
- 5:49just future stars, they're current athletes putting in real
- 5:54work right now. And if we get this right, if we
- 5:58continue to highlight them, support them, celebrate them
- 6:02early, we're not just building faster athletes, we're building
- 6:07stronger individuals. So if you're listening to this
- 6:11and you're part of this space, parents, coach, athletes,
- 6:15supporters, take a moment, celebrate the kids around you.
- 6:19Give them that encouragement, give them that recognition
- 6:22because it's matter more than you think.
- 6:26And if you want to stay tapped in with everything that we're
- 6:28doing over here, make sure you follow us on Instagram at Speedy

- 6:53especially David Mitchell for this opportunity.
- 6:56And remember, don't wait to give them kids their flowers.
- 7:00Celebrate them now while they're young.
- 7:03Thank you. Thanks Steve.
