- 0:03If you are a B2B service based business owner and you are
- 0:06looking to gain more clients, create more impact and more
- 0:09revenue in your business, TuneIn to amplify your marketing
- 0:13message with Christine Campbell Rappin.
- 0:15Every week we're going to take you through how to build an
- 0:17audience of buyers. Mastering your marketing message
- 0:20and making offers using your voice is one of the most
- 0:25important elements every business owner needs to master.
- 0:30Whether you're taking big stages of whether you are simply
- 0:32choosing to influence people on a one to one basis.
- 0:36But self doubt can derail even the most seasoned of speakers.
- 0:40And that's why I'm super excited to bring somebody today to you
- 0:45to help talk about how do we use self doubt as a strength and how
- 0:49do we actually influence sell without really needing to get
- 0:54into that awful icky pitch scripting language.
- 0:58Please give a very warm welcome to our guest today.
- 1:01This is Katcha Vertebra, super excited to have you.
- 1:03Welcome to our show. Thank you, Christine, I'm so, so
- 1:07happy and grateful to be here today.
- 1:09Thank you. So let's talk about this idea of
- 1:13your voice is not just the oral component, it is something so
- 1:19much more. Tell us what is presence?
- 1:23Why is it so important? So for somebody who's a public
- 1:27speaker coach, I like to say that people will remember you
- 1:31from your energy much more than from your words.
- 1:35So, which is really funny because I work with words all
- 1:38the time and I help people transform words into something
- 1:42much more than just a message. You see, in today's world, we're
- 1:46constantly bombarded obviously a lot with a lot of information
- 1:51now to stand out. It's not about the fast content
- 1:55anymore. I think that people really truly
- 1:57want to hear the heart to heart communication and really want to
- 2:01believe you. And now to believe you, you have
- 2:05to use your inner strength, your inner energy, and your own
- 2:09belief to actually make your audience, whether that's one
- 2:13person or hundreds of people truly, truly respect and believe
- 2:18what you're saying. And I like to say that I, I
- 2:23transform communicators because we are all communicators.
- 2:26We're, we're born communicators since the day we are born.
- 2:28We're crying as babies when we don't like something, and
- 2:31probably even when we're very, very old and we can't talk
- 2:35anymore, we still somehow communicate through our body.
- 2:38What I'd like to to do is transform the communication
- 2:41that's sort of average or doesn't make somebody feel
- 2:45content into something extremely powerful and joyful, something
- 2:52that we enjoy. I, I think this is interesting
- 2:55because I think we often forget that we are boring communicators
- 3:00and everybody has an allegation, especially if you've chosen to
- 3:04be a business owner, you know, this is, this is table stakes.
- 3:07I, I heard this in a podcast we recorded earlier this week.
- 3:09And I love that kind of analogy. You have to curate your skill
- 3:15set and it is beyond just the words because what does the
- 3:19audience need to hear? A script or something else?
- 3:22What's your opinion? Because I think a lot of people
- 3:24still come to speakers and say tell me the script or come to us
- 3:28when we help people with self and they said tell me a script
- 3:30and I'm like. Yes, when it comes to scripts,
- 3:34some people simply cannot avoid them.
- 3:37They cannot function without them.
- 3:39I have quite a few clients who decided to simply learn their
- 3:45text. And I always warned them, if
- 3:47your brain goes into freeze mode, you won't remember a
- 3:51single word, you won't remember to breathe.
- 3:54So that's when you really have to understand what is your
- 3:58message? What actually I like, I like to
- 4:01call it what is your gift, but not the message.
- 4:04What it's what is the gift for the audience.
- 4:07So this is the first transformative thing that I like
- 4:09to do is don't think so much about the words.
- 4:13Think of the message, think of what's in it for the audience.
- 4:17So scripts, great bullet points, even better speaking from the
- 4:23heart, knowing what your message is, following the structure,
- 4:27perfection. That's it.
- 4:29That's the perfection. You know, when you allow
- 4:31yourself to just be the kid that you used to be and when you
- 4:35bring that inner child in a speech that's well prepared,
- 4:39that for me is perfection. I love that the authenticity
- 4:43that comes out the, the, the playfulness, the charisma,
- 4:48That's what I truly believe. And that's when I really, really
- 4:50listen to the words. Interesting.
- 4:55I know that one of the best experiences as an audience is
- 5:00somebody who is owning that influence, owning your energy.
- 5:04But here's the catch. Some of that energy isn't always
- 5:08positive because we're nervous and we've got butterflies in our
- 5:11stomach. And yes, it's true speaking.
- 5:13It's one of the most commonly held fears people have.
- 5:17And So what happens when doubt energetically spills over?
- 5:23Yeah. So when doubt, when you, when we
- 5:25actually we allow doubt to enter our system and most of the
- 5:31speakers who deal with stage fright, and that's a lot of
- 5:34them. And actually I have stage fright
- 5:36still to this day. There's no way I can get rid of
- 5:39it. It's in the system because I
- 5:41feel very responsible. I I always come on stage with a
- 5:44lot of responsibility to what I'm about to do, what I'm about
- 5:48to give. And of course as a public
- 5:50speaker that pressure is quite high.
- 5:54But what you just said is so you have the self doubt now how to
- 6:01get rid of it? Simply transform it into, oh,
- 6:06no, what if you just simply go into, oh, yes, I will give.
- 6:12This is what I will do when I come on this stage.
- 6:15This isn't like, oh, no, what do they think about me?
- 6:19What do they expect or what? How will they judge me?
- 6:22It's about I'm stepping on this stage with something, with a
- 6:26clear message. I'm obviously here.
- 6:28I always ask my clients, yeah, but why are you invited?
- 6:31If you're not good at something, you're obviously invited for a
- 6:34reason. Please can we think of that
- 6:36reason first, Not this or what if I collapse?
- 6:39What if I forget? What if I feel the self doubt?
- 6:43Of course you feel the self doubt.
- 6:45It's, it's scary to be out there.
- 6:47And you know, the social aspect of stage right is that we as
- 6:51human beings, it, it's incorporated in us that we
- 6:54believe more what other people think than what we believe.
- 6:59And we really care about the communities.
- 7:01So audience is sometimes like a community, even though it's
- 7:05sometimes just a one person or 10 people.
- 7:07But if we come in front of audience, we always think, OK,
- 7:11the community will judge us and that matters to us.
- 7:14So the question is, how can I not care so much?
- 7:18Because if we care too much, our speech will lose the whole
- 7:22power. Now we've put already a lot of
- 7:24hours into preparation and we're just a few seconds away from
- 7:28stepping on that stage. And if the self doubt will take
- 7:30over, it will show. It will show in the first few
- 7:34words with a shaky voice. And guess what, people just
- 7:38switch off when they see somebody in stage fright.
- 7:40Unfortunately, this is what the fast content did.
- 7:43People are looking for that juice.
- 7:45And the moment you show that stage, right, that's it.
- 7:48All the hours of hard work are gone.
- 7:51So the doubt has has to become the gift has to become OK, I'm
- 7:57not here to now self doubt. I'm already here.
- 7:59What can I do to change it? And of course, to breathe
- 8:03through the, the, the scary moments just before we enter the
- 8:09room, the stage, wherever we are.
- 8:11It's the box, the box, the breathing.
- 8:13I'm sure you've heard of it. You know, the 4444, I like to
- 8:16call it. That's something that I really,
- 8:18really like to use with my clients and with myself.
- 8:21This is important to hear for everybody.
- 8:25I think you you said it and I think we often don't hold there.
- 8:29So I want to pull it back just for a second.
- 8:31If you are taking somebody else's stage, whether this is a
- 8:34virtual stage, whether you're presenting in a meeting, whether
- 8:38you are invited into a conversation or somebody says
- 8:41I'm booking a call with you, which is an invitation.
- 8:44You have a real opportunity here to say what value do I bring in
- 8:51this equation and listen to the answer.
- 8:55Because if you can deliver against that expectation, which
- 8:58is why the invitation was extended in the 1st place, it is
- 9:02the reason to put the brakes on. Yeah, for the freight train
- 9:07that's running in fear because it's like, oh, right, I'm here
- 9:12and ask for this. I think it's so important.
- 9:14Like when you're gifted a stage, it's like the first question I
- 9:17personally always say to to my host is how can I deliver for
- 9:21you today? What is it that you've asked me
- 9:24to bring to your audience? What would success look like in
- 9:27the deliverable? OK, I can just live to that
- 9:29expectation. And I think that's a really
- 9:31beautiful insight. Ask why you're here.
- 9:35And I saw an incredible way to handle, you know, to your point,
- 9:40you can lose an audience if you're too fearful.
- 9:42And somebody who was speaking on a really big stage had a great
- 9:46whiplash moment where they came on and said, my voice is going
- 9:50to wobble for the 1st 2 minutes, hang with me because it will
- 9:53steady itself. And everybody in the audience
- 9:56was like, I get this guy, I'd be terrified too.
- 9:59And sure enough, when he found his rhythm and got going, yes,
- 10:03he did, he did suddenly feel and own that conversation.
- 10:08And you can acknowledge your fearful.
- 10:11It's OK to do that. Everybody knows it's scary to be
- 10:14up there. But don't let the fear be the
- 10:16reason. You have to acknowledge it to
- 10:20really stay with the audience, I think.
- 10:22Can I share just a really, now that you've said this, this
- 10:25example, I would like to share my own experience.
- 10:28So I had to perform once in front of the president of our
- 10:31country. It was a Film Festival in, in
- 10:34my, in my country, in Slovenia where I live.
- 10:36And I, I had to go on stage and I was really, really full of
- 10:41self doubt, very low self esteem as a singer because I'm not a
- 10:45professional singer, I am an amateur.
- 10:48But I really made it with my first song.
- 10:50So they've invited me to this festival and the president of
- 10:53the state is there and all important people.
- 10:55And I'm shaking. So I come on the stage and I
- 10:58actually say, well, when I heard that Mr. President is coming, I
- 11:04really felt like, what am I going to do?
- 11:07And I haven't felt very good about myself.
- 11:09And in that moment, this huge applause comes from everybody,
- 11:13you know? And so audience isn't as awful
- 11:17as it seems, but for some reason, we think they are
- 11:22really, really judgmental. And if we ask for support,
- 11:26audience will be there for us because guess what?
- 11:29Every individual in that audience, they would be feeling
- 11:32the same. They would be shaky.
- 11:33They would be full of self doubt.
- 11:35Some of them actually go, oh, I'm so proud that somebody even
- 11:39walks on the stage. And I always go, that's not
- 11:41enough to walk on the stage. You know, walking on stage is
- 11:45one part, just one little step. But then we do have to deliver.
- 11:49So yeah, I like that example. And I you just reminded me of my
- 11:53little. Example, we are, we, we are all
- 11:55nervous and I I think it's important.
- 11:57It is not lip service. I will tell you every time I
- 12:00take a big stage to this day, every time I create my own rooms
- 12:04and I have lots of events in my business and of course we have
- 12:07the podcast. I'm like, there's always a
- 12:08moment of anticipation and that's the way I see it.
- 12:12I don't see it as fear. I see it as anticipation.
- 12:15And my habit is I usually, you know, if it's really a big thing
- 12:19and I'm in my head and I know it, I bring a post it note
- 12:22somewhere with me I and that I can see in front of me and it
- 12:24just says breathe. Like get there, centre your feet
- 12:29and breathe and breathe until you're not shaking to the degree
- 12:34you were when you started and then begin.
- 12:36And people, you're right. I think this is important to
- 12:39say. Your audience is not looking for
- 12:40you to fail. They're looking because you were
- 12:43asked to be here to give, give something, lean in and they will
- 12:46meet you there. And I love that you share this
- 12:50about your own experience because when you're in front of
- 12:53people that you have respect for or you understand there's others
- 12:59that respect them, you have this sense of, I want to do this
- 13:03well. And being human in the doing
- 13:06well is what makes you really relatable.
- 13:09And that's so important. Yes, You as a transformational
- 13:12speaker coach, help people with visibility because a lot of
- 13:15people in business particularly know they need to be visible and
- 13:21we'll do a lot of things first. Why is visibility so important
- 13:24and why should we start now building this so that we can
- 13:28influence others? I always say that we have to be
- 13:32visible and do our best and visibility so that we can not
- 13:37shame ourselves or not blame ourselves for failing.
- 13:41Because when we give everything into the speech presentation,
- 13:45into our presence, just for those few moments, I believe if
- 13:51we fail, we will be able to forgive ourselves much easier
- 13:55than if we just go half prepared, you know, Oh yeah, I'm
- 13:59gonna fail anyway. And then we fail.
- 14:01And they were like, yeah, I'm a loser anyway.
- 14:03So I think it's all very psychologically connected to
- 14:08this. It's like, it's like games, you
- 14:09know, the mind is playing with us.
- 14:11And I I try to say that certain people, yeah, they have this in
- 14:17them. And that's majority of speakers
- 14:20who aren't confident and they have to do it for their jobs.
- 14:23They, you know, everybody has to sell something in their lives.
- 14:26We have to sell ourselves even at job interviews.
- 14:29So let alone being a business owner, gosh, you really have to
- 14:33know how to be present. And I often say to anybody who
- 14:39comes to me and the people I work with, and I cherish them so
- 14:42much, do you know, I say when you fail and when you do things
- 14:47wrong, you just have to forgive yourself.
- 14:49Because just putting effort into coming to me and understanding
- 14:54how important this is, it's the next big step in your life.
- 14:59And it's so important. And the people who keep ignoring
- 15:02it, you know, they really suffer.
- 15:03They struggle. They struggle a lot.
- 15:06And they haven't opened their eyes yet.
- 15:08I had a doctor, if you would let me just quickly tell you this
- 15:12case, a Doctor Who was such a specialist, she would come to me
- 15:16and she would say, I'm invited to this huge conference, you
- 15:19know, thousands of experts, doctors.
- 15:23And I've been invited by the main organizer.
- 15:24And I go, wow, well done. And she goes, I think I'm going
- 15:27to have to cancel. I, when I think about it, I feel
- 15:31like I'm going to be sick. And I just go, whoa, hold on a
- 15:33second. You've been invited by the main
- 15:35organizer, You the only doctor from our country.
- 15:39OK. I'm sure there's a reason for
- 15:41this. Yeah.
- 15:41I don't know what's the reason. The guy who's going to be
- 15:43sitting next to me has 500 surgeries more.
- 15:46I mean, I feel like I'm a nobody, you see?
- 15:49And this is somebody who's a doctor specialist with I don't
- 15:51know how many degrees, her own medical school.
- 15:54I mean, you know, and, and this is what it does to you.
- 15:57The self doubt is is a huge enemy huge.
- 16:02And to deal with it, we have to be smart and we have to overcome
- 16:06it with help, with help, because there is help out there.
- 16:11And if we're all alone and if we can constantly keep doing this
- 16:15Spire light, I'm not good enough, It's going to end up in
- 16:18a really deep hole. And it's hard to get out there.
- 16:21It's hard to to step out. This is so important.
- 16:25We talk about getting help. I know one of the things that
- 16:28really shifted in my business and I've been speaking for a
- 16:31long time as the introvert, actually learning speaking was
- 16:34easier because when I'm on a stage, I'm actually separate
- 16:38from the audience. Like talking in front of like
- 16:40walking a room of 100 people is way more terrifying for me than
- 16:44actually standing on a stage in front of 100 people.
- 16:46Because an introvert, I get to control this and then the people
- 16:49want to come talk to me, come find me.
- 16:50And I also don't have to do the ask.
- 16:52So it's a funny thing, but when I I've always spoke, there are
- 16:57rooms that to intimidate us. And to this point, your story of
- 17:01the doctor, it's a room that she is intimidated by or is
- 17:04comparing herself within. And a mentor of mine that I
- 17:08hired this year says something to me all the time.
- 17:12You belong in every room. If I open the door, which means,
- 17:16you know, somebody invited you onto their stage, invited you to
- 17:19bring your expertise to a room to that value.
- 17:22Your job is to step through it. And we don't expect you to be
- 17:26perfect. We know you need repetition.
- 17:28We know you need the exposure. We believe in what you're doing,
- 17:31and this is but one step in the progress to being even better
- 17:36the next time. And you can't skip this.
- 17:39You can't skip the reputation. You can't skip and take yourself
- 17:45out of the game because the audience will give you a lot of
- 17:49grace if you simply say yes and then work the system.
- 17:54And I want to ask you this question because you have a
- 17:56system. You, you know, you're a trainer.
- 17:58You, you work with people to build this.
- 18:02We know we have to step in. We have to manage our energy.
- 18:05What's the tip you do or what's the tip?
- 18:07You really work with your clients in your framework to
- 18:09manage that energy so that you can step boldly even when you're
- 18:15wobbling. Yes.
- 18:18So it's a, again, I think I like to compare the presents with
- 18:22animals, with animal energy because animals don't speak our
- 18:26language. So I like to ask my clients
- 18:28first, what animal are you when you communicate?
- 18:31And they usually come with something a bit more weaker,
- 18:34like a dog or a little cat. I'm a little pet something.
- 18:38And then I say, OK, what animal? OK, Describe the animal.
- 18:40And they go, yeah, I'm a really, you know, faithful.
- 18:43I'm really kind. I'm quite shy.
- 18:47And then I say, OK, what animal would you like to be when you
- 18:51communicate? And they usually come out with a
- 18:53wolf, a lion, an owl who's not afraid of the darkness.
- 18:58You know, it's all these mysterious, quite unique, strong
- 19:03animals. And so then I do the
- 19:05transformation with, OK, what do you need in that moment when you
- 19:11will walk into an office, when you will walk into a room, when
- 19:13you will, you know, go on a stage to become that animal.
- 19:18And what it takes is stepping in a role.
- 19:23What I do is you don't have to be confident all the time.
- 19:28You don't have to come home to your wife like you're in a
- 19:32state. You don't go, hey, wife, hello.
- 19:35What's what's for dinner? You know, you don't have to do
- 19:38that. You don't have to be that every
- 19:40minute of your life. But if you step in a row of that
- 19:44animal and be the energy of that animal, you can do it for those
- 19:50few moments. And it's not manipulation
- 19:53because somebody's already asked me, hey, is this manipulation?
- 19:55I go, no, this is a role like you're living in a role of a
- 19:59daughter, of a mother, of a businesswoman, of a podcaster,
- 20:03of a, you know, you can also step into role a of a really
- 20:07good public speaker of somebody who sells their business really
- 20:11well. And you can put the energy into
- 20:15this box and like, it's like a little, you know, firestorm for
- 20:20those few moments, for those 15 minutes, for that half an hour
- 20:24of a meeting, you can be somebody else.
- 20:27This is golden guys because this is exactly what I personally do.
- 20:31I have this mentality. It's like almost like I always
- 20:34see it in my mind like donning a coat.
- 20:36I'm going to step on that stage as this person because that's
- 20:38what this person is invited me to deliver.
- 20:40It is a role I play for this period of time and energetically
- 20:44I can manage the energy for the length of the commitment that we
- 20:46have built. So I think that's golden,
- 20:49golden, golden nugget. And I want to ask you guys, all
- 20:51my guests this because I think it's an fascinating insight.
- 20:56What works for you right now to amplify your message, to find
- 20:59clients for your business and you really create this big
- 21:02impact that you do in your business.
- 21:04What's working right now? What's working for me is as as I
- 21:08am somebody who loves to communicate to people is going
- 21:11out there. I love to do live networking.
- 21:15I'm also a member of BNI, which is actually coming from the
- 21:19States. I mean, it's it's present in
- 21:21over 70 countries. I think I love to tell people
- 21:25that what I teach and preach is what I actually live.
- 21:30I'm not somebody who's just gone to school to study things.
- 21:34And now I'm going to lecture that to you.
- 21:36I know what stage Fraud Pride does to you.
- 21:40I know how feeling small and not important enough can be
- 21:45damaging. So damaging that when you do
- 21:48have to step on the stage, you actually are not giving your
- 21:51utmost. You're, you're just surviving,
- 21:53you're not thriving. And so I, I often say, please,
- 21:57let's not go on that stage. Let's not go into that board
- 21:59meeting just to survive. We want to shine, we want to
- 22:02achieve something. So the way I achieve business is
- 22:06I walk to people and this is another golden nugget as you
- 22:09like to say. I never look at people up, even
- 22:14though I'm quite short. I have to physically look at
- 22:16them up. But the way I talk to people is
- 22:20like, we're just the same. We're equal.
- 22:24Maybe you have few, maybe you have many more, millions more.
- 22:27Maybe you're a president of something, maybe you're a
- 22:30politician, but you are somebody who's just a human as well.
- 22:34You go home, you have your own problems, you get sick, you have
- 22:36children. Maybe you have somebody who's
- 22:38dying at home, you know, and we are equal.
- 22:41And when I talk to people who of some form of importance,
- 22:44somebody maybe who I have to rely on for my business, they
- 22:48love it because they don't feel like they're superstars.
- 22:52All people are looking at me because being a superstar is a
- 22:55pressure. I mean, you know, all the famous
- 22:58people will tell you being exposed and being loved so much
- 23:02is a pressure because it doesn't feel natural, because we are all
- 23:07human beings of faults, of mistakes, of failures, of
- 23:11falling down and getting up again, you know, And that's what
- 23:14I do. And this is my, this has worked.
- 23:17You know, just a few days ago, I go to this huge gala event, the
- 23:21businessman, the business woman of the year.
- 23:23I go to the organizers. I have met them before, but I
- 23:27just went to them and I said, right, So I saw who presented
- 23:30this event, who was the moderator.
- 23:32It was a famous actress. I can do this better.
- 23:36And they looked at me and they were like, excuse me?
- 23:39And I said, well, you know, I really know how it is to be an
- 23:42entrepreneur. And I come from a family of
- 23:45business, and my father was a Craftsman many, many years ago.
- 23:49And I know how to talk to these people.
- 23:51I know I can get to their hearts.
- 23:54From my heart, I know how it is to be a Craftsman or how it is
- 23:58to be a small business owner. So I know I can speak to them
- 24:01perfectly. And you know what they said?
- 24:03That's it. You are so right.
- 24:06And I got the job for the next. Year fantastic.
- 24:09You know, and I went to that event.
- 24:11I was exhausted. And I went to that event with
- 24:13that purpose. I said, I'm going to go to these
- 24:15two people. There was a president of this
- 24:18Chamber of Commerce and the the director and I went to both of
- 24:22them. And then then they both agreed
- 24:24I'm the right choice and they apologize that I wasn't on their
- 24:28radar before. Which was funny because I never
- 24:30sent an offer. Or anything, there's much to be
- 24:33said for one, get in the room 2, have a bold ask and three, this
- 24:37I walk my talk because guys, this is this is this is what is
- 24:42needed in the current world. It was always needed, but you
- 24:45cannot win without it now. And so a lot to invite people
- 24:48to. How can they find you?
