- 0:29I Hate Talking: Welcome to episode 82 of I Hate Talking.
- 0:32I Hate Talking: Hi everyone.
- 0:33I Hate Talking: So we have a particular word that was mentioned by a particular listener that it might be a good vocabulary word, and this word was recently a Wordle word.
- 0:46I Hate Talking: OK.
- 0:47I Hate Talking: So that word is fetid, fetid, F E T.
- 0:54I Hate Talking: ID ID ID you did have the correct number of letters because maybe you thought Wordle only has 5 letters, so it does, right?
- 1:02I Hate Talking: Yeah, -- that is -- correct.
- 1:03I Hate Talking: Did you use that as your prompt for spelling it correctly or incorrectly, but at least the right number of letters.
- 1:10I Hate Talking: No, but I did know, and like as I was spelling it, I knew I was on the right track for 5 letters.
- 1:17I Hate Talking: -- 5 -- letters.
- 1:17I Hate Talking: So 5 letters did come into your mind.
- 1:19I Hate Talking: I did.
- 1:20I Hate Talking: -- How many letters that is -- it because of Wordle, yeah, yes, OK.
- 1:24I Hate Talking: Yes, it did.
- 1:27I Hate Talking: So I think I solved it in 5 tries.
- 1:30I Hate Talking: So it did take me a while, but I also randomized my starter words.
- 1:36I Hate Talking: So I think perhaps that day I had a starter word that was not very helpful.
- 1:41I Hate Talking: My starter word, I mean, I haven't played in about a year or two, but I was consistent for a long while.
- 1:47I Hate Talking: My starter word would not have been helpful.
- 1:50I Hate Talking: That's true.
- 1:51I Hate Talking: Well, I am currently on an 87 day streak.
- 1:57I Hate Talking: Nice.
- 1:58I Hate Talking: My max streak is 257.
- 2:00I Hate Talking: And I have played 1,211 times.
- 2:05I Hate Talking: How many days is that?
- 2:07I Hate Talking: I mean, I know how many days, but how many like years?
- 2:11I Hate Talking: Yeah, it's at least 3 years, 3.5 years, I guess.
- 2:14I Hate Talking: Do you want the exact number?
- 2:16I Hate Talking: Sure, OK.
- 2:18I Hate Talking: -- As -- I'm staring at you blankly trying to do the math.
- 2:23I Hate Talking: 3.3 years.
- 2:25I Hate Talking: OK.
- 2:26I Hate Talking: And 99% of those have been wins, but it only goes to, well, 0 decimal places in the win percentage.
- 2:37I Hate Talking: -- So -- can we pause on and talk about Wordle for a second?
- 2:40I Hate Talking: Uh, when it first started.
- 2:42I Hate Talking: It was a thing.
- 2:44I Hate Talking: We were super into it every day, and I had this straight for, I don't know, over 100 days, maybe, maybe 90 something days.
- 2:53I Hate Talking: It was not 100, it was like 90 something days, and I lost for the first time.
- 2:58I Hate Talking: And the word was something.
- 3:00I Hate Talking: I don't even remember what it was, but it was something about losing or failure.
- 3:04I Hate Talking: Remember because I shared that on social media and how people were like, that's super ironic indeed, uh, and then after that I just never got my love for it back.
- 3:15I Hate Talking: I tried.
- 3:16I Hate Talking: And I've never had a word all in one.
- 3:19I Hate Talking: Still trying to do that.
- 3:20I Hate Talking: -- I -- did once, yeah, one of our kids did, -- and one of our kids did also because -- they use the same starter word, and it happened to be that word because no offense to him, but that starter word that he uses or had used in the past was not a very good starter word, but it worked out for the 11 day that it was the actual word.
- 3:41I Hate Talking: You started it 3 years ago.
- 3:46I Hate Talking: He was little.
- 3:47I Hate Talking: That's true.
- 3:48I Hate Talking: It was a good word for him, but now we need to encourage a different word since it's not gonna be that word anymore.
- 3:55I Hate Talking: So, well, I mean, I guess it could be if this goes on for decades at some point.
- 4:01I Hate Talking: No, I don't think it's ever been the same word yet.
- 4:04I Hate Talking: There are some theories out there that we're getting close to the point where they're going to have to start reusing words or adding words to the solution list, OK.
- 4:14I Hate Talking: So, fetid is on the solution list.
- 4:17I Hate Talking: It was the word, and it is a word that means Stinking or having an offensive odor, and it comes from Latin.
- 4:30I Hate Talking: And the particular original Latin word was fir, and that came to be used as fetidus or hotius and then became used as fetid in the late Middle English.
- 4:46I Hate Talking: Now there are some theories that this particular word feet or fetidus was related to Latin words for dung, which was femi.
- 5:00I Hate Talking: Or smoke which was fumis.
- 5:03I Hate Talking: So, as you're saying the word, it reminds me of like fetish.
- 5:08I Hate Talking: Is there any relation to that?
- 5:11I Hate Talking: I don't think so, but we can check.
- 5:15I Hate Talking: No, fetish actually is a Portuguese term.
- 5:19I Hate Talking: But does go back to Latin before that to a word factitious meaning made by art, but the Portuguese like co-opted that term.
- 5:34I Hate Talking: And shifted that to artificial objects.
- 5:38I Hate Talking: OK, so cause when you're explaining, how do you pronounce the word again?
- 5:43I Hate Talking: Fetid fetid.
- 5:46I Hate Talking: I feel like it almost sounds like you could twist it into a fetish, so that's when my brain's like, oh yeah, fetid fetish.
- 5:55I Hate Talking: Uh, no, no, I think you're making a mistake that a lot of English speakers make and actually a lot of podcasters because just they, because they think that the word is different by two letters or quote unquote sounds the same that it must be related, but It is not, and it oftentimes is not.
- 6:17I Hate Talking: Right?
- 6:18I Hate Talking: So, there is some commentary around the difference between fetid and putrid.
- 6:27I Hate Talking: So, as I've already said, fetid is perhaps more related to dung or smoke, and putrid is another particular word that describes some foul smelling odor.
- 6:42I Hate Talking: But that typically refers to things like rotting organic matter, so rotting food or dead animals or something like that, where fetid is gonna be perhaps more related to these general smells of even bad breath is one of the examples here.
- 7:05I Hate Talking: You could have fetid breath.
- 7:07I Hate Talking: So like, dude, go brush your teeth, your breath is fetid.
- 7:12I Hate Talking: Yes, -- I suppose -- so.
- 7:14I Hate Talking: So, this reminds me, we've mentioned before that we're casually learning Japanese, which is a very difficult language for an English speaker to learn.
- 7:26I Hate Talking: And one word we've learned lately is basa, which means uncool.
- 7:32I Hate Talking: And so I've been trying to get the kids, our children, to say Dasa.
- 7:37I Hate Talking: Instead of like stupid or dumb and things like that, when they don't like something like I'm so bored, it's like dude, say that's docile.
- 7:47I Hate Talking: It just seems, I mean, maybe Japanese, if you're a Japanese speaker and that's not appropriate, let me know.
- 7:53I Hate Talking: But it seems, if it just means uncool.
- 7:57I Hate Talking: It seems a better way to explain that you don't like something.
- 8:01I Hate Talking: And being like, oh, that's so stupid.
- 8:04I Hate Talking: Just be like, hey, that's aa, I don't wanna do that.
- 8:07I Hate Talking: And so that kind of reminds me of another option we can give them.
- 8:10I Hate Talking: Instead of saying like that's disgusting.
- 8:13I Hate Talking: Or that's gross, which can hurt people's feelings, saying like that's side, dude, I don't wanna eat that.
- 8:21I Hate Talking: Yeah, that's a good suggestion, I suppose.
- 8:24I Hate Talking: Maybe that will be the new hip lexicon that people can catch on to and for whatever generation is the next generation, they can be.
- 8:33I Hate Talking: Dasai or kokoi and that will be uncool or cool.
- 8:40I Hate Talking: Now, does Japanese have a modifier?
- 8:43I Hate Talking: I haven't gotten this far in the learning, I suppose, where they just put a on before the word, so like something's cool or uncool.
- 8:54I Hate Talking: Do they have a modifier that completely reverses the word?
- 8:58I Hate Talking: I, I mean, I'm not, I'm a little bit further along in my studies.
- 9:03I Hate Talking: But I'm not an expert by far, and I, I don't think they do.
- 9:07I Hate Talking: I think it's an absolute different word.
- 9:09I Hate Talking: But I might be wrong, so tell me if I am, or we can look it up, I guess.
- 9:14I Hate Talking: I suppose so.
- 9:15I Hate Talking: -- So I'm not -- aware of this, but I mean it's not completely out of the question because certainly English has words that are opposite or antonyms, right?
- 9:27I Hate Talking: So I think, so have you learned the word ginnitus, right?
- 9:31I Hate Talking: That's like not this thing, right?
- 9:33I Hate Talking: So like this is like this.
- 9:36I Hate Talking: But Ginnitis, ginitis is not that.
- 9:43I Hate Talking: So, so you could say Janais Kakoi and that is the same as dasai.
- 9:49I Hate Talking: Yes, this is not theoretically, right.
- 9:53I Hate Talking: Yes, I think you could say that, or you could just say that site.
- 9:57I Hate Talking: I mean, it's like English, right?
- 10:00I Hate Talking: Like you could say, this thing is not cool, you could say that's so uncool.
- 10:04I Hate Talking: Right.
- 10:07I Hate Talking: Uncool uncool, yeah, that's what I mean.
- 10:09I Hate Talking: It's like one singular word.
- 10:10I Hate Talking: It's the actual word is modified by that.
- 10:15I Hate Talking: So maybe they do, but I know, yeah, at the ending it'd be this or ginnitus.
- 10:20I Hate Talking: Interesting.
- 10:22I Hate Talking: Much more to learn about Japanese and probably still more to learn about English.
- 10:27I Hate Talking: So we were recently camping and I think our campsite was sort of fetid.
- 10:33I Hate Talking: Really?
- 10:35I Hate Talking: I liked where we camped.
- 10:36I Hate Talking: Explain.
- 10:37I Hate Talking: Well, it certainly was a very nice campground.
- 10:39I Hate Talking: We had bathrooms that were very convenient, located not too far, not too close.
- 10:46I Hate Talking: Normally we have to go maybe 1 mile or so for showers and bathrooms.
- 10:51I Hate Talking: This was just a small walk.
- 10:53I Hate Talking: And do you feel this way?
- 10:55I Hate Talking: I had a discussion with the people we were camping with.
- 10:58I Hate Talking: We feel like everything was brand new, it still had tags on it, but they maybe bought it for our group.
- 11:05I Hate Talking: No, it was constructed in April.
- 11:08I Hate Talking: So the tags were just still on from April.
- 11:11I Hate Talking: Yes, OK, -- so it just hasn't been used much -- though.
- 11:15I Hate Talking: I think we may have been like the 2nd or 3rd group to ever use that since April.
- 11:19I Hate Talking: -- So -- it was brand new.
- 11:21I Hate Talking: Uh, one of our kids, it was still like a trailer with like 2 stalls in it, one shower for boys and girls, right?
- 11:30I Hate Talking: Was that how it was situated.
- 11:32I Hate Talking: Our one child was like, this makes me feel rich.
- 11:36I Hate Talking: And it just cracked me and the other women up, cause obviously we're camping, and these are essentially just high-end porta potties, but like, they were very nice and freshly painted, and the curtains were brand new, like, or new within 6 months, I guess.
- 11:55I Hate Talking: So he felt very rich staying there.
- 11:59I Hate Talking: So I wanna know why you think it's Now I'm sick on fetish.
- 12:04I Hate Talking: What is the word?
- 12:04I Hate Talking: Fetid, fetid.
- 12:06I Hate Talking: Why do you think it's fetid when our child thought we were rich.
- 12:10I Hate Talking: So I do agree it was very nice accommodations for camping and camping, car camping still.
- 12:18I Hate Talking: Yes, and there was plenty of room for tents, and we had our fire ring and main campfire area, plenty of room to set up all the particular amenities that we brought with us, such as cooking areas and things like that.
- 12:37I Hate Talking: And then we did have the campfire.
- 12:39I Hate Talking: Now, we only burned wood and that had the iconic campfire smoke.
- 12:48I Hate Talking: But every once in a while, the wind would blow.
- 12:51I Hate Talking: And you didn't ever have a whiff of the particular septic tank.
- 12:57I Hate Talking: No, I never noticed it.
- 13:00I Hate Talking: OK, well, you must have been upwind of that the entire time then.
- 13:04I Hate Talking: Oh no, where was the septic tank?
- 13:06I Hate Talking: Where was the stench coming from?
- 13:07I Hate Talking: Well, from the fancy bathrooms, because I was on a septic tank system.
- 13:13I Hate Talking: Yeah, and every once in a while you would smell it.
- 13:16I Hate Talking: And I never noticed.
- 13:18I Hate Talking: Interesting, OK.
- 13:19I Hate Talking: And then that would mix with the campfire smoke, and that is, according to our research.
- 13:26I Hate Talking: Potentially, the literal definition of fetid is smoke and poop.
- 13:31I Hate Talking: Well there you go.
- 13:34I Hate Talking: You didn't want to teach that to the kids, huh?
- 13:37I Hate Talking: I didn't do this research until after the time, and actually I think the Wordle may have been after the camp out as well.
- 13:43I Hate Talking: Oh really?
- 13:43I Hate Talking: OK.
- 13:43I Hate Talking: It is -- very -- recent.
- 13:46I Hate Talking: OK.
- 13:47I Hate Talking: Yeah, it's funny.
- 13:49I Hate Talking: I did, I'm glad I didn't notice.
- 13:51I Hate Talking: It was actually a farther distance than we typically travel with our scout troop, but I would, I mean, I told everyone I'd camp here again, like, it was really nice.
- 14:03I Hate Talking: There's a creek, but it's not like any water nearly, that the kids would like have to step over the stones to get across and It was just a really nice area and it was beautiful with the fall leaves and the bathrooms that made us feel rich.
- 14:21I Hate Talking: So luckily I didn't notice any fetid smells.
- 14:25I Hate Talking: That's good.
- 14:26I Hate Talking: But we also had running water at our campsite, which we often don't have.
- 14:31I Hate Talking: Yup, we did have the nice little iconic stream and the running water, which, I mean, like we had water, drinking water, -- drinking -- water, that's true.
- 14:42I Hate Talking: Yes, sometimes we have to drive to fill up water containers and replenish those.
- 14:49I Hate Talking: This was on site as well, and the bathrooms had hot water, hot water, and it was actually hot.
- 14:55I Hate Talking: Yeah, this is gonna say more about me than I probably should share.
- 14:59I Hate Talking: But when we camp, it's usually just 2 nights, so I don't shower or anything.
- 15:05I Hate Talking: I like to use wipies, you know, we're camping and it's pretty primitive.
- 15:09I Hate Talking: But me and some of the women all agreed that had we known these accommodations, we would have brought in shower stuff and I would have totally taken a shower.
- 15:18I Hate Talking: I have no desire to hike 1 mile.
- 15:21I Hate Talking: A shower in this open area and ice cold water, so I don't normally bring shampoo and stuff like that.
- 15:29I Hate Talking: But this was hot water and just a few feet from my tent.
- 15:34I Hate Talking: So wherever you go, you don't travel in a way that's prepared to shower?
- 15:38I Hate Talking: I mean, I have soap, we have soap.
- 15:42I Hate Talking: So yes, I wash, I can wash my body like sponge wash.
- 15:45I Hate Talking: No, I don't bring shampoo and conditioner.
- 15:49I Hate Talking: And makeup remover and gel and a razor.
- 15:54I Hate Talking: No.
- 15:55I Hate Talking: I guess that's the difference even then in you don't I shower.
- 16:01I Hate Talking: I always have a bar of soap and a towel.
- 16:04I Hate Talking: OK, that's what I have as well, that's enough to shower, not when your hair is in the middle of your back.
- 16:11I Hate Talking: And you have to shave.
- 16:13I Hate Talking: -- I don't think you have -- to.
- 16:15I Hate Talking: Well, exactly, I don't.
- 16:16I Hate Talking: But I could have, is the point.
- 16:20I Hate Talking: Yeah, I think that's the most important thing that you can learn from Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is that you always have a towel.
- 16:26I Hate Talking: We did, yeah, we did.
- 16:29I Hate Talking: And so, and that's enough for me to shower, although I did not during this camping trip either, but I was prepared to.
- 16:37I Hate Talking: We did have towels and we lost one.
- 16:40I Hate Talking: We needed it to clean up a big mess.
- 16:42I Hate Talking: And you and I discussed it and decided to get rid of the towel there due to the mess we had to clean up.
- 16:49I Hate Talking: But that towels been with us for our entire marriage.
- 16:54I Hate Talking: So I mean, -- it's did we have a little ceremony as we were laying it to rest in the -- trash?
- 16:58I Hate Talking: I kind of did.
- 17:00I Hate Talking: I was like, good job.
- 17:02I Hate Talking: You've done so well over these years.
- 17:04I Hate Talking: It really has done us so good.
- 17:08I Hate Talking: We only what, maybe got 4 towels when we got married, I think 4.
- 17:12I Hate Talking: That's what I'd guess.
- 17:13I Hate Talking: Well, 4 like bath towels, and I think it came with the.
- 17:16I Hate Talking: Subsequent set of hand towels and -- and -- washcloths, yes, full size bath towels.
- 17:22I Hate Talking: So I think we had 4 and we still have them.
- 17:24I Hate Talking: I mean now we have 3 plus we've added through the years, but those initial ones have still been my favorite.
- 17:32I Hate Talking: They're still the softest, most absorbent and beautiful.
- 17:36I Hate Talking: Well there you go.
- 17:38I Hate Talking: And to clarify, it was not our mess.
- 17:40I Hate Talking: -- We were cleaning up other people's mess -- because we had to toss it.
- 17:42I Hate Talking: -- That's what -- leaders do.
- 17:43I Hate Talking: Yes, it was not our mess, but we willingly and kindly cleared, cleaned up someone else's.
- 17:49I Hate Talking: I also, in hindsight, shouldn't have brought those.
- 17:52I Hate Talking: Those are not our best towels, quote unquote.
- 17:57I Hate Talking: So I brought them.
- 17:58I Hate Talking: They're over 16 years old.
- 17:59I Hate Talking: Uh, you know, maybe I should have brought more ragged towels.
- 18:04I Hate Talking: I suppose so.
- 18:05I Hate Talking: Now we know for next time.
- 18:06I Hate Talking: Just bring all the towels.
- 18:08I Hate Talking: All of them?
- 18:10I Hate Talking: No.
- 18:11I Hate Talking: I, I mean, essentially, you probably don't have as many as some, but We have quite a few.
- 18:17I Hate Talking: -- We do -- have a few.
- 18:18I Hate Talking: We need to bring the little ones, like, we have uh Paw Patrol towels and stuff.
- 18:25I Hate Talking: Those are what I should have brought, cause our kids are outgrown Paw Patrol and made her from cars.
- 18:32I Hate Talking: That's true.
- 18:33I Hate Talking: You would not need to have a memorial service for those towels.
- 18:36I Hate Talking: Oh, maybe more so though, cause I have so many memories with our children in them.
- 18:41I Hate Talking: That's true.
- 18:41I Hate Talking: I found, um, as we're talking about that.
- 18:45I Hate Talking: I found, I was cleaning out our office today, going through a bunch of stuff, and I found one of our kids' favorite toys.
- 18:56I Hate Talking: I got rid, I gave away a bunch of their cars stuff, cause we've outgrown it.
- 19:02I Hate Talking: And we knew some people that would really love it and so we uh let them have it, but I found one of them still laying around.
- 19:11I Hate Talking: My heart was so happy, just remembering how much joy our children had with Mader.
- 19:17I Hate Talking: And Holly Schiffwell and.
- 19:22I Hate Talking: -- Who's the main -- guy?
- 19:25I Hate Talking: Lightning McQueenkchowchow.
- 19:27I Hate Talking: So I found that and I was like, oh, I'm glad I have this because we can keep one of them as a sentimental thing.
- 19:37I Hate Talking: That's true.
- 19:39I Hate Talking: And then you can pass it on to them and they can share it with their wives and children.
- 19:45I Hate Talking: Yeah, hopefully they enjoy it.
- 19:47I Hate Talking: As we're speaking of that, I heard a quote.
- 19:50I Hate Talking: You wanna hear it?
- 19:51I Hate Talking: Do I have a choice?
- 19:53I Hate Talking: Yeah, you always have a choice.
- 19:55I Hate Talking: OK, sure, tell me the quote.
- 19:57I Hate Talking: We live in America, a free country.
- 20:00I Hate Talking: Maybe I don't know.
- 20:01I Hate Talking: The government shutdown.
- 20:03I Hate Talking: SNAP benefits are ending.
- 20:04I Hate Talking: Who knows what's gonna happen in 3 days?
- 20:07I Hate Talking: People are gonna be stealing each other's groceries, shooting each other at work and schools.
- 20:12I Hate Talking: Oh, OK, OK, OK, OK.
- 20:14I Hate Talking: -- We have little kids that listen to -- this.
- 20:16I Hate Talking: OK, sorry, I went down a dark corner when you started talking about America.
- 20:20I Hate Talking: America, we love it.
- 20:23I Hate Talking: We put our hands over our heart and pledge to it.
- 20:27I Hate Talking: That's true.
- 20:29I Hate Talking: OK, we're all OK, y'all, and if you're not.
- 20:32I Hate Talking: Messages we can help.
- 20:35I Hate Talking: OK, so should I go to this or the other thing as well.
- 20:37I Hate Talking: Wherever you wanna go, you're in a free country apparently.
- 20:40I Hate Talking: OK, well, I'll go to this.
- 20:42I Hate Talking: I wrote it down because I wanted to remember it.
- 20:45I Hate Talking: It was by a playwrightter named Richard Greenberg.
- 20:49I Hate Talking: And he said, nostalgia is just a longing for a time we know we can survive.
- 20:55I Hate Talking: It it made me think of that when we're talking like I found that Lightning McQueen.
- 21:00I Hate Talking: I was like, oh, those times were so great and I love cars and Lightning McQueen.
- 21:06I Hate Talking: But it was an interesting concept of, it's just a time that we know we can survive, right?
- 21:14I Hate Talking: Like, we look back now, we're like, oh, those were great times, even if we were in them and sleep deprived and exhausted.
- 21:21I Hate Talking: And struggling with all these different things, we can look back now.
- 21:27I Hate Talking: And I think that every generation can kind of do that.
- 21:31I Hate Talking: Like you look at the 20s, and you're like, 0, 1920 was amazing, flappers and stuff.
- 21:38I Hate Talking: But actually they had that flu and they had, like, you know, like there's so many things, the war and all those horrible things that happened.
- 21:46I Hate Talking: But you just pick out your favorite things and so it's a.
- 21:51I Hate Talking: Time, so nostalgia is a time that you long for cause you know you can survive it.
- 21:58I Hate Talking: It's scary when you don't know what's coming in the future.
- 22:02I Hate Talking: But when you pass something, you're like, oh, I've done that, I can do that again, really hit me hard.
- 22:08I Hate Talking: Interesting.
- 22:10I Hate Talking: Where did you hear this quote?
- 22:11I Hate Talking: -- You wanna -- know?
- 22:13I Hate Talking: It's probably just Instagram or something.
- 22:15I Hate Talking: No, I've been binging y'all, OK.
- 22:18I Hate Talking: Listen to our podcast, but also you can listen to Josh Radner has a podcast on how I made your mother, is what his podcast is called.
- 22:31I Hate Talking: It is a recap.
- 22:33I Hate Talking: He plays Ted on How I Met Your Mother.
- 22:36I Hate Talking: And he goes through, he's doing a rewatch episode by episode on How I Met Your Mother, the TV show.
- 22:43I Hate Talking: And he did a play for this gentleman.
- 22:48I Hate Talking: And heard him say that apparently.
- 22:51I Hate Talking: So I've been listening to How I Met Your Mother, the recap show about how I met your mother.
- 23:00I Hate Talking: And I've been really enjoying it cause we were newlyweds during that time and I watched it a lot.
- 23:06I Hate Talking: And so I haven't watched it really since then, so it's bringing about a lot of nostalgia as I'm watching it and listening to him recap it.
- 23:15I Hate Talking: So the person that you're quoting, Richard Greenberg, is quite the character.
- 23:21I Hate Talking: His famous show Take Me Out.
- 23:24I Hate Talking: Has a ridiculous plot line.
- 23:28I Hate Talking: Well, does he have Josh Radner in it or somewhere in there?
- 23:31I Hate Talking: I supposedly Josh Radner is the one who quoted him.
- 23:34I Hate Talking: Uh, premiered in 2002.
- 23:36I Hate Talking: OK, yeah.
- 23:37I Hate Talking: That'd be around that time right before how I met your mother.
- 23:41I Hate Talking: There anyways, go ahead if you want to talk about his plot.
- 23:46I Hate Talking: I am not even gonna talk about.
- 23:47I Hate Talking: He only has one you wanted me to keep this good for the kids, and there's no way I can talk about the plot.
- 23:52I Hate Talking: -- This -- is a family show.
- 23:54I Hate Talking: He only has one show.
- 23:56I Hate Talking: OK, this was the most famous show.
- 23:58I Hate Talking: Apparently others are not all that different, so I don't watch plays by Richard Greenberg.
- 24:03I Hate Talking: Also, I disagree with his quote.
- 24:05I Hate Talking: -- So you -- don't.
- 24:06I Hate Talking: OK, first, let's, let me address this, and then I want to hear that.
- 24:10I Hate Talking: So think about that.
- 24:11I Hate Talking: I want to give him credit because whenever I hear a quote, I think it's important to give credit to whoever you heard the quote from.
- 24:19I Hate Talking: So that's why he did, and I heard Josh Radner quote him.
- 24:25I Hate Talking: So I did not deep dive it.
- 24:28I Hate Talking: I just wrote it down.
- 24:29I Hate Talking: I have a list of quotes I love.
- 24:31I Hate Talking: And that was just one I added to my lovable quotes.
- 24:36I Hate Talking: So I did not deep dive him.
- 24:39I Hate Talking: I'm apolo I apologize if he's not great or maybe you love him, I don't know.
- 24:45I Hate Talking: I know I love how I met your mother.
- 24:47I Hate Talking: And So tell me why you disagree with the quote, and I'll give it again, what he said.
- 24:56I Hate Talking: Nostalgia is just a longing for a time, we know we can survive.
- 25:02I Hate Talking: Yeah, I think there's people that knew they survived the Holocaust or knew that they survived the Great Depression.
- 25:11I Hate Talking: They do not long for those times.
- 25:14I Hate Talking: Is that nostalgic for them?
- 25:16I Hate Talking: I don't think so.
- 25:18I Hate Talking: Exactly.
- 25:19I Hate Talking: They know they survived it and therefore, according to this gentleman, they should be nostalgic for that time because they know they survived that.
- 25:27I Hate Talking: But I would highly doubt that anybody would be nostalgic for that specific experience.
- 25:34I Hate Talking: Now, there may have been highlights within that experience, and I would categorize that more as thriving, not surviving.
- 25:42I Hate Talking: So maybe during the Holocaust, they had a friend that was able to give them encouragement or during the Great Depression, they had a special dinner with potatoes and a hard candy at the end.
- 25:58I Hate Talking: And they are nostalgic for that because it was a highlight of particular emotional extremes in the positive.
- 26:08I Hate Talking: That they were thriving in those moments even though all surrounding particular events and scenarios were simply surviving that they could be nostalgic for those particular times.
- 26:21I Hate Talking: Do you recall Lightning McQueen being this time of conflict and discord and.
- 26:29I Hate Talking: It was a very difficult time.
- 26:31I Hate Talking: Well, I think that was the best time of my life, those couple of years there.
- 26:36I Hate Talking: I would literally stand here with all my money on the table and say those years right there were the best years of my life.
- 26:42I Hate Talking: Right?
- 26:43I Hate Talking: So you're nostalgic for a time you were thriving or were experiencing an emotional high point.
- 26:49I Hate Talking: Because if I write it down, I was waking up 60 to 90 minutes every night for years.
- 26:56I Hate Talking: I did not sleep through the night.
- 26:58I Hate Talking: For almost 10 years.
- 27:00I Hate Talking: So that, and especially during that time, you know, it's like if I write down things, I'm like, oh, those were struggling times.
- 27:06I Hate Talking: I don't think about, I have to force myself to think of those times.
- 27:09I Hate Talking: I think of those cute little boys and how much I wanted to be a mom.
- 27:13I Hate Talking: And then I was, and they made me laugh every day, and I just loved waking up and being able to take care of them and feed them and play with our cars all day long.
- 27:25I Hate Talking: So I instantly think of all those amazing times and how great I felt and then if I force myself past that, I can think of the hard times.
- 27:34I Hate Talking: But I, I understand what you're saying.
- 27:37I Hate Talking: So you would reword the phrase, nostalgia is a time of longing for when we arrived.
- 27:45I Hate Talking: Correct.
- 27:46I Hate Talking: And that thriving could be within times of surviving, but you're not longing for just the survival.
- 27:54I Hate Talking: You are thinking back to those emotional high points or times of particular emotional stress, whether that be positive, probably not negative, but that would be -- what I would posit and -- maybe, but I think maybe the concept I'm getting at, that I'm taking from it.
- 28:14I Hate Talking: During those times, I remember having stressful times.
- 28:18I Hate Talking: Our one kid had a lot of medical issues.
- 28:21I Hate Talking: Again, we didn't sleep very much, she traveled a lot.
- 28:24I Hate Talking: And so when I think about it, like, oh yeah, I actually struggled a lot, I was very stressed during that time.
- 28:31I Hate Talking: But now I remember only the good stuff.
- 28:33I Hate Talking: And now I have different issues as our kids are getting older and having a whole different social and peer dynamic that's stressful.
- 28:44I Hate Talking: I'm like, oh, now I'm stressing about this.
- 28:47I Hate Talking: I wish I could go back to those times when all I had to do was pick my kid up, and we could leave a situation.
- 28:53I Hate Talking: And our kids are too big.
- 28:55I Hate Talking: I can't pick them up and walk away from something now.
- 28:58I Hate Talking: Like they're too heavy for me to carry out of a store.
- 29:03I Hate Talking: That's true.
- 29:04I Hate Talking: Maybe we've already passed the point where We've picked up our kids and put them back down and never will pick them up again.
- 29:12I Hate Talking: You want me to cry?
- 29:15I Hate Talking: Is that the point of this?
- 29:17I Hate Talking: No, it's not, but it does happen.
- 29:20I Hate Talking: There is a point where You as a listener or you as my co-host were picked up by your parent, put down, and never picked up again.
- 29:31I Hate Talking: -- It's -- true, you don't realize it until it's like far past.
- 29:35I Hate Talking: That's true.
- 29:35I Hate Talking: So sad So perhaps for our next episode, nostalgia will be the word.
- 29:43I Hate Talking: Maybe.
- 29:44I Hate Talking: I am curious now about the etymology and perhaps some of the nuances on where that particular word comes from and if this gentleman is correct or not correct, and I'm still fairly convinced that this is actually a poor quote.
- 29:59I Hate Talking: OK, so we'll do our own research now cause I didn't prior.
- 30:03I Hate Talking: -- Right -- now or for our next episode?
- 30:05I Hate Talking: Next episode, next episode, and y'all.
- 30:07I Hate Talking: If you have opinions, let us know if you agree with Richard Greenberg.
- 30:13I Hate Talking: Or with Adam, on which way nostalgia goes, and then we'll do our research and we'll come back and chat.
- 30:21I Hate Talking: Yes, that sounds good.
- 30:23I Hate Talking: So, as always, you can leave a comment, send us a text, or send us an email with your particular thoughts on any of these topics or even new topics that we can tackle in the future.
- 30:38I Hate Talking: And in the meantime, do like, share, and subscribe, and we will probably Not, definitely, tackle nostalgia next time.
- 30:49I Hate Talking: It sounds good.
- 30:51I Hate Talking: So from your friends at I Hate Talking, until next time, remember, it is only through talking that we begin the journey to understanding.
