Transcript
- 0:14Hi, good afternoon. Welcome Miller and Condon on a
- 0:17Monday. The Iowa Sports Radio Network,
- 0:20Trent Condon and Ken Miller for the next couple of hours talking
- 0:23sports with you. We appreciate you starting your
- 0:26afternoon here with us as we'll take you until 2:00 off the
- 0:29bench. Follows us two to five overtime
- 0:32Iowa from 5:00 until 6. Here's what's coming up on our
- 0:34program at the bottom of the hour.
- 0:37Bill Seals, who covers Iowa State.
- 0:39He, of course, was at the press conference, Jimmy Rogers
- 0:41introductory press conference this morning.
- 0:44Bill Seals on that. Perhaps some players coming or
- 0:47going will pick his brain on what he is hearing so far
- 0:50pursuant to Iowa State's football roster, obviously.
- 0:53And it's unfortunate because what a game in Mackey Arena, for
- 0:57crying out loud, it's totally, totally overshadowed by what's
- 1:02going on in football. And it shouldn't because my good
- 1:04God, that was a butt kicking and an eye opening performance on
- 1:08ATJ Otzel Burgers bunch. So Bill Seals on football and
- 1:11basketball coming up at 12:30. Bama, Bob Trent and I will take
- 1:15a look back at the weekend, what the committee got right, what
- 1:17the committee got wrong, if anything.
- 1:20So we will do that coming up at 1:00.
- 1:22And then 130 Scott Dockerman, who was in Indianapolis witness
- 1:26Indiana take down the Buckeyes of Ohio State and is now
- 1:31covering the Matt Campbell introductory press conference
- 1:35with Penn State. He will join us at 1:30 for
- 1:39those topics and a couple more depending what comes up between
- 1:43now and then Trent Dub but not Trent's not here today Mr.
- 1:46Monday night is here today He'll make his pick coming up here on
- 1:49Monday Night Football Eagles in LA to take on the chargers.
- 1:52What a weekend what a crazy weekend when it comes to sports
- 1:57like I love coaching searches. I love them.
- 1:59They're I thought we. Were still going to be here
- 2:00today. I Trent, it's the it's the Scott
- 2:03Knock testament. What did you think of the
- 2:04higher? I said I hate it.
- 2:06I hate to hire necessarily. I hate the fact they made it
- 2:09quickly. Yeah, right, Ray.
- 2:11Coaching hires are great for ratings and within.
- 2:15I don't even think Matt Campbell probably hugged all of his
- 2:17players and and the announcement had already come out.
- 2:20The Jimmy Rogers is coming from Washington state.
- 2:23It just goes to show you just how much college athletics has
- 2:26changed. This is another example of it.
- 2:29It came up with the press conference today.
- 2:31I watched the introductory press conference, thought it was good
- 2:33with the exception that he struggles to open up a bottle of
- 2:36Aqua Kofina. I'm not sure if that'll get get
- 2:38in the way of coaching football. It won't, but it was it was it's
- 2:42kind of some ways Matt Campbell light.
- 2:45I did. I did appreciate it.
- 2:47I'm sitting in Cyclone fans likewise appreciate the fact
- 2:50that Matt Campbell's name came up as much during the press
- 2:53conference. And Jimmy Rogers is, you know,
- 2:57doing the right thing that way. But just a crazy, crazy weekend
- 3:01for Iowa State to lose the best coach in school history,
- 3:04football coach in school history to Penn State.
- 3:07And the way that it happened as quickly as it happened, as
- 3:11clandestined as it happened, other than, you know, keeping
- 3:14the coaches and some of the big boosters, you know, in the dark.
- 3:19And then he's gone, and the next man up.
- 3:21You know, Matt Campbell still is going to be revered.
- 3:25Is he going to get a statue? No.
- 3:27We'll see. No, not.
- 3:28Not anymore. There's still a possibility, I
- 3:31mean. Time heals wounds.
- 3:32Yes, absolutely. I don't remember Johnny Rogers.
- 3:36I don't remember Earl Bruce, I don't remember those coaches,
- 3:39but I remember the stories. And for somebody that grew up in
- 3:41the 80s and 90s, those were still revered names.
- 3:44Those two guys were at the level that were remembered fondly of
- 3:50what they were able to do. And that's still a possibility
- 3:53for Matt Campbell. As you said, time heals wounds
- 3:56and it will likely get to that point.
- 4:00He's gone. I did have some issues, though,
- 4:05in the interim. Twofold.
- 4:10The players, we know the players have power.
- 4:14The players have the power to not play games.
- 4:16You know what? It was what I was told agents,
- 4:20it was their agents, but any of the players begin now.
- 4:22This is what I'm told again. And they got the the same person
- 4:25that told me. This was the one that told me
- 4:26that there was contact in October from Matt Campbell and
- 4:30Penn State told me. They got the wrong e-mail
- 4:33address. Well, I don't know whether they.
- 4:34Did you saw that story? I did, yeah.
- 4:36I don't believe for a second in, in fact, there's there's buzz
- 4:39out there that the Penn State AD might have been in Ames when
- 4:42when Penn State was in Iowa City.
- 4:45So we may or may not ever know. But it was apparently the
- 4:50players, some of them wanted to play, but very quickly it was
- 4:54some of the agents of the players that there's going to
- 4:56have some opportunities to go other places.
- 4:58So you're not playing a bowl game, you're not playing a bowl
- 5:00game. It's it's, again, it's college
- 5:03football has major, major problems.
- 5:05And I think if anything, this weekend just exacerbated how big
- 5:10those problems may be with with teams opting out.
- 5:13And I think the only way that you're going to be able to
- 5:16change that is to incentivize the players to play.
- 5:19And instead of, you know, the conference is getting this
- 5:22money, maybe they get half of it, but maybe the other half's
- 5:25put into a big pot. And if you play, you share in
- 5:27that. And it doesn't go to the general
- 5:29fund, which is another story. You know, when it comes to Jamie
- 5:32Potter, the way he's handling NIL, there's so much going on.
- 5:35I mean, I go back to last Monday when Brent Bloom quit.
- 5:38There's something there. There's something there.
- 5:41And I didn't think there was. And I believe that there is now.
- 5:45I appreciate, I appreciate Pollard being as he's got a big
- 5:49ego and he's willing to say anything.
- 5:52I I did you know the fact that agents workshop their coaches
- 5:58that they that they put out feelers for sitting athletic
- 6:02directors and presidents to come join us for a weekend in this
- 6:07case Austin, TX. We'll put you up in a five star
- 6:10hotel and you can and our and our clients you can intermingle
- 6:17with with ADS and and coaches and form relationships.
- 6:21Shake hands, shave a beer. Did you know that existed?
- 6:24I had never heard of that before.
- 6:26I'm grateful that here's what bothered me about Pollard's
- 6:28press conference on Friday. And I could be wrong.
- 6:31I could be wrong. This might have been out there.
- 6:33Matt Campbell might have put that out there.
- 6:34I did not hear it. Why would he bring up the fact
- 6:37that his mom's got cancer, right?
- 6:40Why would he bring up the fact that Pollards are Pollard, that
- 6:44Campbell's mother-in-law or there's both Campbell parents,
- 6:50Mr. and Mrs. Campbell's parents are ill.
- 6:53Why would you bring that up? Now you got to carry that to
- 6:55Penn State. Come on.
- 6:57That's not for you to say. If Matt Campbell wants that out
- 6:59there, he can say that that's not for you.
- 7:01But but at the same time. And to use that as the reason.
- 7:05That's just it, Trent. That's.
- 7:07Part of that's just. Equal getting in the.
- 7:08World if Kalani Sataki takes the job Wednesday, Matt Campbell's
- 7:11quitting. Matt Campbell's taking the job
- 7:14at Pittsburgh State. Come on.
- 7:16No, no, this was the Penn State job was open.
- 7:19He took it because it's a blue blood job, because you can win a
- 7:22national championship at Penn State.
- 7:24That's why he took it because of his sick parents, not because of
- 7:27kids. Not no, that's not the reason.
- 7:30That's the reason that he took the job.
- 7:32He had the opportunity and that's why I I had a big problem
- 7:36with that also of using that as a reason or an excuse.
- 7:40You're also going to tell me the back Cable's still the coach,
- 7:42that they're not playing a bowl game.
- 7:43No, they would have been. But yet they were, well, it was
- 7:47just a player's decision. Mm hmm.
- 7:48And that. And agents, yeah, and agents and
- 7:51agent and Pollard said on on on Monday, are said on Friday.
- 7:56Rather, we're playing in a bowl game.
- 7:58And that's a block in the pack. Look, he's a he is a hands on.
- 8:03He's a meddler is what he is. I was told this once that this
- 8:07guy is is he's got his hands in everything to the fact to the
- 8:12point where, and they use this as an example, that if Matt
- 8:17Pollard sees the janitor sweeping the floor the wrong
- 8:19way, he's going to go up and take the broom and tell him I
- 8:21want you to do it this way. That's how the Campbell's got
- 8:25his hands in everything. And maybe that's OK.
- 8:26Pollard. You mean I'm sorry, Pollard?
- 8:28Yeah, Jamie Pollard. Yeah, Jamie Pollard, he's got
- 8:30his hands in everything. So we'll see.
- 8:34We'll see where it goes on the surface.
- 8:37They hired A climber. Who's to say?
- 8:40And and maybe this isn't a bad thing.
- 8:42I don't think it is a bad thing. If I was state, someone goes 20
- 8:44and four in the next two years and Rogers decides to, well,
- 8:48Wisconsin's open, they're in the Big 10 to jump then.
- 8:53Are you disappointed? It's it's I mean, it's it's hey,
- 8:56it's the big 10. You can understand the move.
- 8:58And he just LED your team to 20 and four when half the roster
- 9:01change. Look, he did a great job at
- 9:03Washington State. No, no doubt because he had to
- 9:05replace what what did he say? 70 guys.
- 9:08Yeah. 70 guys at Washington state. 75 I know what it was.
- 9:13A team that not only lost their players, they lost their damn
- 9:16conference, right? And they had to figure out a
- 9:19schedule. I mean, there was there was a
- 9:20lot that went into that in that one season.
- 9:23Brought a lot of guys with him, brought a lot of guys out there
- 9:26to make. Sure, he'll bring some with him
- 9:27here. Yes, there's going to be a ton
- 9:29of movement probably. So in this era it is completely
- 9:32different than than what you're used to.
- 9:34But this is a guy, he said. He's a climber.
- 9:37He's not overly in the press conference.
- 9:42It wasn't rah rah, No wasn't. I can't wait to watch this guy.
- 9:46Caller had to. Coach a smile out of him.
- 9:48He mentioned that he has resting bitch face.
- 9:50Yeah, he's. He's a.
- 9:52Football coach, he's a football guy.
- 9:54I like that about him. I liked about I I like the press
- 9:57conference. You're never going to come away.
- 9:59Oh, he won the press conference. I think it's not what it's
- 10:01about. No, you know, he he came across
- 10:03as Luke. Fickle won the press conference.
- 10:05Yeah. How'd that?
- 10:05Work out right, Right. He's a football coach.
- 10:10He brought up with a great deal of respect his successor.
- 10:14I've never heard a press conference where the incoming
- 10:17coach has as much to say in a positive light as the outgoing
- 10:21coach. That left that way.
- 10:23Not a guy that retired. Right.
- 10:25That left the way he did. He he just took a step forward
- 10:28whether it had to do with Nili do believe it did.
- 10:31And I think that was part of it in some respects.
- 10:33And now we're seeing some of these people that have been on
- 10:36message boards or wherever throughout the throughout the
- 10:38weekend and shared their true feelings.
- 10:40They must have got called to the principal's office because
- 10:43they're walking back a whole lot of stuff that was put on.
- 10:46Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah.
- 10:48There was something said that all of a sudden things.
- 10:50Well, maybe it was just the heat of the moment.
- 10:52No, it wasn't. You were telling the truth at
- 10:54the time and now you now you want to walk things back.
- 10:56And it wasn't just one particular person.
- 10:58It was a whole bunch of them. So if you want to chime in,
- 11:00here's your opportunity to do so.
- 11:02We will keep the phone lines open for the next 15 minutes.
- 11:05Love to hear your thoughts on the hire, whether you think that
- 11:09if it if it matters, you're going to keep the players.
- 11:12I would be shocked, I would be stunned if Rocco Becht is still
- 11:16a cyclone in in the fall or whenever.
- 11:20Because I do believe that I think it's better for Iowa
- 11:23State, quite frankly. And this is not a this is not a
- 11:25reflection of Rocco Becht's ability or lack thereof.
- 11:29It's you've got a freshman quarterback on the roster,
- 11:33right? A freshman quarterback who'd
- 11:34played some. That's a lot of people pretty
- 11:37high on Alex Manske big time, right?
- 11:41Whether Bramer stays, whether Berkel stays, there's a whole
- 11:43bunch of guys in the secondary. Rogers recruited Cooper, Ebel.
- 11:47I think that's a huge feather because I think he's a hell of a
- 11:49player. Oh yes, he is.
- 11:50He's a hell of a. Player of the defensive starters
- 11:53returning. I think he might be top of the
- 11:55list. Yes, yes, Caleb Bacon's got
- 11:59another. Year he does, yes.
- 12:00OK. I put Ebolt in front of them.
- 12:03I think upside wise, yeah, dude, the stud.
- 12:06Is Bacon more of a leader though?
- 12:08I don't, yeah. I mean, he's just solid, right?
- 12:09Yeah, and older and been then programmed longer.
- 12:14We'll see where it goes, but it's going to be an entirely
- 12:17different roster. And here's what I here's what I
- 12:20think I know about Iowa State fans.
- 12:22Yes, they're stinging right now, and yes, they're disappointed
- 12:25right now, but they're a loyal group.
- 12:28You guys are a loyal group. I mean, there's a crappin
- 12:31Blizzard outside, not fit for men or beast.
- 12:34And there's a group of them outside in Ames with their tents
- 12:39up, battling the elements, having some Ames Lager and
- 12:44waiting for the new coach to arrive so you could pat him on
- 12:48the back and say welcome to Ames.
- 12:49You're a hearty bunch. And you guys will.
- 12:51Yeah, it's things right now, but you'll come around.
- 12:54Couple of the calls in here. Let's get to Jeff.
- 12:56First of all, I'm hope we hear from Mike from Waterloo.
- 12:59Hope this weekend didn't kill Mike.
- 13:00No, no, he's good. He's good.
- 13:02I mean he's probably got Rogers 11 and one in Year 1.
- 13:05Probably so. Yeah, good point.
- 13:06Hello, Jeff. How are you?
- 13:08Doing well. Let's talk about what I think a
- 13:10lot of Cyclone fans want to talk about and that's the basketball
- 13:14team. Amazing.
- 13:15A couple of a couple of side notes.
- 13:17I'm sure you guys know this some some Cyclone fans or or
- 13:21basketball fans don't know that was the first win versus the
- 13:25number one ranked team on the road in Iowa State history.
- 13:28TJ has won three, three times worse.
- 13:32The number one team in the nation #3 they've only won four.
- 13:35Totalized program. He's won three.
- 13:38That was the worst loss in Maggie Arena Piston.
- 13:43There's another one. Let's get into the game.
- 13:45OK, first. Half Let's get into Killian
- 13:48Torre well. He's going to be.
- 13:50He's an NBA talent, no doubt about it.
- 13:52He is an NBA talent. You go into the first half with
- 13:569 turnovers, Purdue gives you your best shot.
- 14:00Jefferson's in foul trouble. They go up.
- 14:02They go up in the first half, they're up by 4:00.
- 14:06You got the best shot. They did play their best
- 14:08basketball. Lipsey still not 100%.
- 14:10Jefferson in foul trouble. So we get into the second-half,
- 14:14then I look down and I'm looking through some things.
- 14:17They're out rebounding Purdue, which is mind blowing to me at
- 14:20the time. I think they out rebounded them.
- 14:21At one point they were out rebound.
- 14:23I couldn't believe it. Their best.
- 14:25Here's the biggest take away. Nate, I see.
- 14:29Well, it's it's Nate Heisey, it's Nelson giving them big
- 14:32minutes, it's Petra giving them big minutes.
- 14:35They need, they need Bateman, OK, if they're going to play the
- 14:38style that they want to do. And we've all watched this,
- 14:42Cyclone fans have watched this, they fade and they kind of limp
- 14:45in the February. March, what have I said?
- 14:47It's about March for this team. What is going to take them
- 14:51speaking and winning in March? It's their best.
- 14:54TJ likes to cut the rotation, he likes to play seven guys and
- 14:57they get fatigued, they have to play nine guys.
- 15:01Bateman has to stay involved. He can't just be riding the
- 15:04bench. I know he only had 4 minutes and
- 15:06need to play 9 guys. And with that, if we can't talk
- 15:10about health, that who knows? But moving forward, hey, that's
- 15:14the best one in college basketball.
- 15:18Let's do that. Come late February in the March,
- 15:21if the statement wins, it's a phenomenal win.
- 15:24I can talk all day, you guys can talk all day.
- 15:26The number one thing I cannot say enough is their bench
- 15:29movement moving forward. You guys have a good day.
- 15:32Thank you, Jeff. Appreciate the call.
- 15:33I'm glad you brought that up. It was an amazing win, an
- 15:35amazing game. The Cyclone Nation needed it.
- 15:39I mean, they walked into Purdue. What was the quote?
- 15:42I think I wrote it down. What did Painter say after the
- 15:46game? I gosh darn it, let me try and
- 15:48open this damn phone. I wrote it down.
- 15:54They stole our spirit. He's his number one team in the
- 15:59country, right? Right at their place.
- 16:01Matt Painter. They stole our spirit.
- 16:03They did. They absolutely did.
- 16:06And the great news was, as they blew him out, we were able to
- 16:08watch the last three minutes of the Michigan State Duke game.
- 16:10Because it was. Over.
- 16:11That's true. And if you would have told me
- 16:13that 11011 is thinkers or tip it off, I would have called you
- 16:17absolutely crazy. But all right, I don't feel bad
- 16:20about jumping over to Duke, Michigan State because this.
- 16:22Is a blow out. It is a clubbing, they're
- 16:25shooting the ball at such a high level.
- 16:28There is the aggressiveness we have been looking for for two
- 16:32years plus and it's there. Keep it up.
- 16:34A little glimpse. No, not well, there might be a
- 16:37better shot. No, probably the best shot
- 16:39you're going to get is you with just a little bit of space.
- 16:42That's the best shot that you're going to get.
- 16:43And what Jefferson's doing. So Ken Pomeroy, one of the
- 16:47analytic sites you know as his Player of the year standings,
- 16:51Camber boozer #1. Sure has to be.
- 16:54Other guys, the Leno, poor kid from Michigan, he's up there in
- 16:58the top ten. JT Toppen at the Banstead BYU.
- 17:01Braden Smith. Every these names, all these
- 17:03big. Names, right?
- 17:03Yeah #2 who Joshua Jefferson is that right #2 in the country
- 17:08right now in his Player of the Year range, was it?
- 17:10Bill is one of the big brand college basketball guys.
- 17:14Gave him a shout out. A shout out.
- 17:16I beg your pardon? It might have been Bill.
- 17:18I'm not sure. Let's get David in here.
- 17:20Yeah, but I think the country is starting to realize what Iowa
- 17:24State's and what the TJ also burgers built here.
- 17:28Let him have what NIL money is needed to keep this going.
- 17:32JD Pollard, that would be my advice to you, not that you ever
- 17:35sought it. Hello, David, How are you?
- 17:37Good. Hey, several things that
- 17:40bothered me on the whole Campbell thing.
- 17:41First off, we heard all they are not going to the bowl game
- 17:45because of injuries. Well, First off, before the KU
- 17:49game, I don't know if you guys look at that, it's mandated that
- 17:52you put the players who are injured from the Big 12.
- 17:56They have seven guys listed, OK, Four of them were probable.
- 18:01So that was a line of BS to begin with.
- 18:04And then second, why do the players get to decide?
- 18:09I mean, I'm a little confused. By that, they've got, they've
- 18:13got a ton of power now, David. It's different, man.
- 18:14It's different. Well, I understand, I understand
- 18:17that. I mean, but you know, you're on
- 18:20scholarship, you know, you're getting paid NIL money.
- 18:23I mean, I don't know. I mean, it's it's another
- 18:26discussion, but what really upset me about the Campbell
- 18:30deal, 26 guys signed Wednesday committed to Iowa State, the
- 18:34coaches and the staff. Thursday this crap comes out.
- 18:38If I was a player or a parent and things I would be pissed
- 18:43beyond wrecking, no. And you have every right to be
- 18:46so. The timing of it.
- 18:47Yep, you'd have every right to be so.
- 18:50And my last thing is the statue of Campbell is laughable.
- 18:54Remember, they tore down the one of paternal.
- 18:56Well, come on, come on. Let's not go there.
- 19:00Yeah. That's yeah, that's.
- 19:02Sodomizing children compared to leaving for another job.
- 19:05Let's slow down. I understand your hurt David,
- 19:07but that's too much. You'll be revered.
- 19:14Time heals a lot of wounds, not everybody's wounds.
- 19:17Some people will never understand why he left Iowa
- 19:19State. He gave you 10 years.
- 19:22He took you to places you've never dreamt of going.
- 19:25I'm sure you've dreamt of them, but it was unrealistic dreams,
- 19:28right? Big 12 Championships.
- 19:30Fiesta Bowl win, not just getting their win.
- 19:33And to clarify, Joe Paterno looking the other way.
- 19:36Exactly. On the side of me, yes.
- 19:38Yeah, it wasn't him doing it, but.
- 19:40Just clear offensive coordinator sodomized kids in their
- 19:43facilities. It's a.
- 19:44Little different than a guy leaving.
- 19:46Totally different. You were on a roll there, David.
- 19:49It was good till the end. It was good till the end.
- 19:51Indeed it was. All right.
- 19:52Miller and Condon, glad you're with us on a Monday.
- 19:55We'll take a couple more calls, get you in here if you're so
- 19:58inclined. If not, I'm sure that the boys
- 20:01in the afternoon from 2:00 until 5:00 will be.
- 20:04The phone lines will be open all afternoon if you would like to
- 20:07opine on that time. Do you want to get to the
- 20:09College Football Playoff? We'll do that with Bama coming
- 20:11up. The weekend was unbelievable
- 20:14football wise. Indiana knocking off Ohio State.
- 20:17This Hoosiers team, my God, they are something, no doubt about
- 20:21that. All right, let's get a different
- 20:23Mike in here. He wants to join us.
- 20:24Is it our Mike or is it a different Mike?
- 20:28Hello, Mike. How are?
- 20:28You it's a Yeah, it's a different Mike.
- 20:31So you know, I've heard this. I get the players or a bunch of
- 20:35soft babies, and I'm not an Iowa State or an Iowa fan.
- 20:38I'm a college football fan, in fact an SEC fan.
- 20:42But when we look at this, I pay a lot of taxes and it's
- 20:47subsidizing Iowa State. They don't have a choice.
- 20:50That $500,000 is coming out of taxpayer money.
- 20:53It's not though, No, no, no. It's it's Mike to correct you.
- 20:57Taxpayer money does not pay for the athletic department at Iowa
- 21:00State. It is still that could change,
- 21:02but as it is right now, it is self-sustaining.
- 21:06That's a shell game. So Iowa State is a State
- 21:10University. It's not being paid because we
- 21:14get other funding doing that. But somehow the entire Iowa
- 21:18State institution is getting taxpayer money.
- 21:21They're representative of it. You can play your shell games of
- 21:24going, hey, it's not, but they need to put on their big boy
- 21:28pants and get out there and play.
- 21:30That's their job. And now it is a job with.
- 21:33Yeah. Part that I agree with you,
- 21:35Mike, absolutely. You're getting paid now show up.
- 21:40If you want that nil payment you want that check to clear, you
- 21:43need to be. Playing, but if you're if you're
- 21:45thanks, Mike, I appreciate the call.
- 21:46But if you do have if you are quote an agent, I can't believe
- 21:50we're saying agent in college sports and it's legal to do so.
- 21:54If you if you got a kid, you're an agent for the quarterback and
- 21:59quarterback doesn't want to play and you've got another, another
- 22:02guy, another client of yours, you're not going to send him to
- 22:05Iowa State. If if they for or any school, if
- 22:08you're forced to play in these things, I agree with you.
- 22:10They are they are absolute employees, but I don't think you
- 22:15can force them to play. Look, at the end of the day,
- 22:18this is kind of like the TV show on Tuesday night bowl games.
- 22:21And you know that thing's going away.
- 22:22It isn't, thank God. You know what?
- 22:24I'm for the first time friend. It only took six years.
- 22:28Well, that's OK. We got a lot of content and for
- 22:31that reason I'm grateful. It's it's it's a made for TV
- 22:36event. These bowl games.
- 22:37Are they trying? Do they want to be there?
- 22:39Are is the whole team going to be there?
- 22:42Are they backups that are going to play in this game?
- 22:44Some of them do. Some of them will take an
- 22:45opportunity for the first time maybe to see the field seniors.
- 22:49I feel bad for the seniors that aren't going to go, but we'll
- 22:53never know what was behind it. Was it the agents?
- 22:56Was it the players? K State didn't want to go 5 and
- 22:59seven teams that in the past you'd get that list and be
- 23:04looking. You normally be Iowa State,
- 23:06right? That's five and seven.
- 23:07Is there a chance they get to go to a bowl game?
- 23:09How many teams? Well, there's 80 slots.
- 23:12Is there a chance that, you know, one or two teams come off
- 23:14that five and the five and seven teams are saying no?
- 23:18They're saying no. You have that.
- 23:20This is the biggest offseason project, I think, for college
- 23:24sports. Fix the calendar.
- 23:25Fix the calendar and fix the damn bowl games because they're
- 23:29going to go away. They're going to go away and I
- 23:32hate that. It's been the playoff.
- 23:35I think that's part of it. And the and the bowl games that
- 23:37are left, the games before Christmas, Sorry, that's another
- 23:42thing. Campbell let it known that
- 23:43Washington State's going to be playing in a bowl game and it's
- 23:45going to be before Christmas. Why do I keep saying that?
- 23:50Pollard let it be known that Washington State was going to be
- 23:55playing in a bowl game prior to the announcement being made and
- 23:58the games before Christmas. Come on, Jamie.
- 24:01Mike's in Waterloo. Hello, Mike.
- 24:03How are you? Good to hear from you.
- 24:05Are you OK? If I had your phone number, I
- 24:07would have reached out over the weekend.
- 24:09I want you to know. No, I was upset at first because
- 24:11we're not going to a bowl game. I look forward to a bowl game
- 24:14every year. Yes.
- 24:16And I think this move, nothing against the new coach, it's
- 24:19going to set us back 2, two to three years in the timing of it
- 24:23because of the recruit leaving. Yeah, all our good players will
- 24:27probably go to another program and I think, let's face it,
- 24:31cycle fans, we're not going to have a chance to the side Hawk
- 24:35series now we might as well get used to 15 straight loss.
- 24:40But we got a great basketball team.
- 24:42And one thing I want to know is this new coach going to hire a
- 24:46special teams coach because I got I got so sick of our punter
- 24:51punt the ball and one of our guys, it hits one of our guys in
- 24:56the back of them, you know, in the back.
- 24:58How many times did that happen during Campbell?
- 25:00Well, at least well, at least twice this year.
- 25:02Then I can think of twice. This year, there's a big in the
- 25:04Cyhawk game in Ames. I was thinking about at least
- 25:07three or. Four, that was the what?
- 25:09That was the game day game. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 25:11Yeah. Yeah, the rain delay game.
- 25:12Rain delay, Yeah. And one more thing, did you see
- 25:16Halliburton at the game Saturday?
- 25:17I did and his fiance. Yes.
- 25:19I wonder what he's saying saying about that kid from France.
- 25:22Didn't I tell you he might leave the team and dunk?
- 25:25He's amazing, no. Such a great defender.
- 25:27He really is. Yeah.
- 25:29Thanks for the call, Mike. Appreciate it.
- 25:31Yeah, Glad you're well. Was worried about you, James.
- 25:34How are you? And then we'll get to a break.
- 25:35We'll get Bill Seals in here. We'll get the latest from Bill
- 25:37Seals. Hey, James.
- 25:40Hey, how are we doing? Good.
- 25:41How are you? Not well.
- 25:44OK. This sucks.
- 25:46Yep, this really sucks. Yep, it's it's hard.
- 25:51I don't think this program is going to be able to step up
- 25:56after this. Financially or just on the field
- 25:59of play, What do you mean? Well, the field of play, I mean,
- 26:02we're just kind of in limbo now, don't you agree?
- 26:04Kind of goes hand in hand. Yeah.
- 26:08It's hard, you know. What do you do?
- 26:10No, he took you to places you'd never been.
- 26:12James took you places you only dreamt about getting to, and he
- 26:14actually got to those places. You exercised a lot of demons.
- 26:18You won tongue 10 games, you won a Fiesta Bowl.
- 26:22All these bull trips that you guys were going on.
- 26:24You packed the airplanes to go to Ireland to follow this group
- 26:27in August, for crying out loud. It's I get it, James.
- 26:31It had to have hurt this weekend, no question about it.
- 26:36We may never recover. It's.
- 26:38Well, never is a long time and we will see.
- 26:40Good to hear from you, James. Thank you.
- 26:42James brings up a sentiment, though, that I have been very
- 26:45surprised. Loyal sons forever true.
- 26:49The Iowa State fan base is a resilient punch.
- 26:52Fractured for people in my age demographic, people in their 40s
- 26:56and early 50s. So a lot of losing before what
- 26:59it's turned into and certainly on the football field.
- 27:01How many times have you heard? Well, I was a student from A
- 27:03from A to B and at that time. We won one big ball game or big
- 27:07a game. Right.
- 27:08There was a lot of that and you see this and it's not just
- 27:13losing the coach. That's obviously a major factor,
- 27:16a guy that had the success. But as you mentioned, the
- 27:19message boards and some of the realities, the financial
- 27:21realities of this, this was already happening in the
- 27:24background. This just I think brought it to
- 27:27the forefront for a lot of people in the fan base that
- 27:30aren't a message boards that that don't do that.
- 27:32They they buy their tickets, they go to the games, they're
- 27:35excited when they win, those kind of people.
- 27:37And the reality is they're learning more and more the
- 27:39future of college athletics as it changes, as we see Ben Bruns
- 27:43asking for state help about the financial situation.
- 27:46And we had the caller, Mike, earlier that was talking about
- 27:49the financial. Right now they are self-serving.
- 27:52But the reality having to come up with $20 million a year just
- 27:56for the players, that reality is going away.
- 28:00And the tone that we just heard from our last caller is
- 28:03something I was incredibly surprised talking to a number of
- 28:05my Iowa State friends this weekend.
- 28:07Is that that reality at this new level, this new era of college
- 28:12athletics, that Iowa State, certainly on the football field,
- 28:16maybe we can't compete. We shall see.
- 28:19It's fascinating. You know what the other my other
- 28:21take away and we're obviously going to get to Bill Seals a
- 28:23little late here. I have never seen Iowa State
- 28:29fans at odds with Jamie Pollard like I have this weekend.
- 28:34Usually it's, you know, there's a little push back, but they
- 28:39very quickly come around to, and rightly so, credit Pollard for
- 28:44some of the things that he's done.
- 28:46He's not perfect by any means, nobody is.
- 28:48But there's a there's more fire Pollard and Pollard's to blame.
- 28:54And the the, the story that came to light with the Players Era
- 28:58tournament. And everybody that participated,
- 29:02apparently, with the exception of one school, the players got
- 29:06the money. They got the money for playing
- 29:08in that tournament in Las Vegas. The Men's.
- 29:11Basketball program got the money for playing in that tournament.
- 29:17Jamie Pollard insisted that money not go specifically to the
- 29:23college football program but to the general fund.
- 29:26And I think that is maybe behind one of the main defections from
- 29:32when, when you think of NIL and when you think of we will as
- 29:36much as anything that there was there.
- 29:39There's a lot of folks that don't believe that that that's
- 29:42should have been the case. And unfortunately, I think a lot
- 29:44of people believe that Pollard's got his hands.
- 29:48He's got control, too much control of how this is allotted.
- 29:51Let's get to Steve and Steve in Waukee, if I can get the mouse
- 29:55over there. Steve, Welcome.
- 29:57Steve, how are you? Thanks a lot guys always enjoy
- 30:01listen thank you for I'm a Hawkeye fan tried and true but
- 30:06for Cyclone fan step away from the panic button until Beth gets
- 30:11came. We would have gladly traded you
- 30:13athletic directors and true isn't, isn't this a Big 12 issue
- 30:21just in terms of the availability of TV dollars as
- 30:24much as anything. And anybody that thinks that
- 30:27Matt Campbell wasn't going to go back home for 11,000,000 a year,
- 30:3017,000,000 for his and 30 million to pay players is a
- 30:35little idealistic. But as a Hawkeye fan who was
- 30:38hoping that they'd hire, I don't know, somebody that I, somebody
- 30:45that wasn't worth the darn, I think that they made a great
- 30:47high. I like Rogers.
- 30:49He is. He's Matt Campbell or TJ
- 30:51Opselberg. 2 dot O As Jamie said, I think it's a great hire
- 30:56and candidly, I think that the program's going to be OK.
- 30:59Steve, thanks for the call. Appreciate that one morning and
- 31:02we will go to break and get Bill Seals.
- 31:03Jim, how are you? Good, good.
- 31:05Thank you. Fine, thanks.
- 31:07I just had a had a question for you guys.
- 31:10So I'm kind of curious about the Matt Campbell buyout.
- 31:13My understanding was that that basically the buyout was only
- 31:16around 2 million. That's correct, yes. 2 million
- 31:18and Rogers was 4 million at Wazoo.
- 31:20And so and, and then then on top of that, they had a 55. 100,000
- 31:25Yes. Bowl game.
- 31:27My question is why would Iowa State allow a school to come in
- 31:31and decimate their football program for only and to only
- 31:34walk away with a million and a half dollars?
- 31:35It's a great question, Jim and I, I.
- 31:37Think that was Jamie Pollard question.
- 31:38Yeah, that, that's one of Pollard's, I think biggest
- 31:40misses. Yeah, unless we know something
- 31:42that we don't, but. Maybe he didn't think he was
- 31:44going to leave. It was obviously in
- 31:45negotiations. The Pollard's, Campbell's agent
- 31:49slash attorney was the one that obviously asked for that or made
- 31:53that part of the negotiations and in order to get Campbell to
- 31:56re up I I guess. You have to protect your
- 31:58university as an athletic director.
- 31:59That has to be at the. Forefront man, thanks for the
- 32:02call. I appreciate it.
- 32:03That was a big mess. It is because it was, it was a
- 32:06different level prior to this last contract.
- 32:09It came down from X to Z or whatever what obviously Z being
- 32:14now $2,000,000. But yeah, I mean this cost, I
- 32:16would take money. Got it.
- 32:17Got to pay the buyout of Wazoo. You have a coach that is wanted
- 32:20across the country, a coach that was opposed to getting the USC
- 32:23job and the Florida State job and a ton of other jobs to not
- 32:26have that language in there or have the language only be 2
- 32:29million, only two million, but we know we're talking about
- 32:32that. They need to be 1015.
- 32:34That thing needed to be monstrous, and he didn't get it.
- 32:37Negotiating ploy. We'll be back with Bill Seals
- 32:40Mill and Condon underway. Glad you're with us, the Iowa
- 32:42Sports Radio Network. Hi, Mory Condon, welcome back.
- 32:47Iowa Sports Radio Network. Let's get right to Bill Seals.
- 32:50Bill, thank you for being patient.
- 32:52Appreciate you coming on. What a crazy weekend.
- 32:55cyclonereport.com, part of the on three media network.
- 32:58I know you guys had a ton of traffic over there this weekend,
- 33:04basketball sadly getting totally overshadowed.
- 33:06That was an unbelievable win against Purdue.
- 33:08Really was just your thoughts on everything, how it went down.
- 33:12You listen to Coach Rogers this morning.
- 33:15You were in the front row of the press conference.
- 33:17Your takeaways from what you heard from the new head football
- 33:20coach. Well, I think he's a, a very
- 33:23impressive guy, to be honest with you.
- 33:26I think a lot of how he speaks is, is like, well, he's what,
- 33:30eight years Matt Campbell's junior?
- 33:32And I mean, a lot of what he is about is what Matt Campbell's
- 33:36all about and what has made him successful at Iowa State.
- 33:40So I mean, I think that he's going to be a good fit there,
- 33:44good cultural fit. But you know, you guys are aware
- 33:49what the rules are now with the transfer portal and and
- 33:52everything, but he's got a hard job ahead of him here.
- 33:55I mean, it's you, you. He's got experience, you know,
- 34:01flipping a roster. He had to do that at Washington
- 34:03State. But you know, one thing that he
- 34:06brought up was he did a lot of that in the spring portal last
- 34:10year. Well, there's no spring portal
- 34:13this year. So you know, he's he's got to
- 34:16he's got to get to work. I think that that was one of the
- 34:19big things about, you know, him coming on board so quickly after
- 34:24Matt Campbell moved on is he had to get it.
- 34:27They had to get a guy in here that could get to work, try to
- 34:30start to keep this nucleus, the players around, you know, that
- 34:35got started last night. Well, you know, I'm sure we'll
- 34:39have a stream of players over the next several days or weeks
- 34:44that depart. But I mean, this was an 8 and 14
- 34:48this year that, you know, they were, you know, a few games
- 34:52away, you know, going 9 or 10. They had a kicker, they got
- 34:55hurt. So I mean, a few things that I
- 34:58mean, this could have been a team that would could have been
- 35:00in Dallas again. So he wants to try to keep this
- 35:03nucleus of players together. And you know that process
- 35:07started last night. Rogers mentioned 75 new guys on
- 35:11that Wazoo team a season ago. I don't know if it'll be 75, but
- 35:14the number seems pretty substantial.
- 35:16You work in the recruiting space.
- 35:18You mentioned it's going to be quick turn around to make this
- 35:20happen. Do you think I mean decimated
- 35:23the roster as we currently know it is?
- 35:25Is that a fair characterization of how you kind of know it right
- 35:28now and the work then the Rogers are going to have to do because
- 35:30you'll believe that a lot of these guys are going to leave?
- 35:34Well, I think that's just kind of the nature of the, the
- 35:36business. But, you know, a lot of the
- 35:39current players kind of have to, to weigh to, you know, not all
- 35:44of them are going to Penn State. You know, they granted Penn
- 35:47State only has two commits, but they've still got I, I'm not
- 35:51sure the exact number of announcements to the portal that
- 35:55they've had, but, you know, they're not bringing this whole
- 35:57roster from Iowa State over here.
- 36:00So a lot of these kids have a decision to make.
- 36:03You know, they can be one of the several thousands that that jump
- 36:07into the portal, or they could give this guy a shot.
- 36:10And I think, again, what I was pointing back to is you
- 36:14listening to Jimmy talk and it sounds a lot like Matt.
- 36:17So I think they've got to give it's it's going to be wise for
- 36:20them to give him a shot, you know, And the other thing is
- 36:23too, yeah, he was at Washington State for a year.
- 36:26But this guy has roots in the Midwest, coaching at South
- 36:30Dakota State so long. You know, one thing that he was
- 36:33one of the first things he brought up was he recruited
- 36:36Cooper Evil. They had Beau Goodwin committed
- 36:39at South Dakota State before he flipped to Iowa State late.
- 36:42So a couple of those guys that are veterans.
- 36:45Well, and several more he didn't mention were guys he recruited.
- 36:49He's been in the Midwest. So I think there's some appeal
- 36:52right there for a lot of these guys.
- 36:54I mean, obviously there was a rash of emotions over the
- 36:57weekend, you know, following the announcement, you know,
- 36:59everybody wants to make rash judgement, jump into the portal.
- 37:03I'm gone. But I think there's a value in
- 37:05in kind of seeing this thing play out this week.
- 37:07You'll get to know more of the, the coaching staff this week,
- 37:12the the coordinators, I think the recruiting guys and, and
- 37:16just start to try to build those relationships with those current
- 37:19players because I mean, that's a that's a monumental task right
- 37:23now. That's first and foremost.
- 37:24Yeah, re recruiting the roster and re recruiting the guys that
- 37:27signed last week if at all possible.
- 37:28So a couple of things Bill A, have you talked to a player off
- 37:32the record or or players off the record of what they heard last
- 37:35night? And then B in the in the sake of
- 37:38time, did you do you have any idea of the of Campbell's staff,
- 37:43any of those staff members will be asked to remain as part of
- 37:47Rodgers new staff. So A2 parter.
- 37:50Yeah, nothing, nothing direct from a player off the record.
- 37:54I mean, I've got, you know, contacts that are parent,
- 37:57obviously parents of player. I think all signs were that the
- 38:02meeting went very well. And I think one thing that Jimmy
- 38:05Rogers said that, you know, he had a long line of players
- 38:09outside the meeting last night when it was done wanting to talk
- 38:12to him after after the meeting. So there were, you know, side
- 38:17sessions or whatever after he got done.
- 38:19They, the players just wanted to talk to him a little bit more.
- 38:22So I think there's a good group that's receptive there.
- 38:25I mean, we'll we'll see how that bears out over the over the next
- 38:29couple weeks. And and what, what was the
- 38:32second part of that? Again, just.
- 38:33The coaches, anybody? Campbells former staff staying.
- 38:37Well, yeah. And, and one thing he said in
- 38:39the Jimmy said in the the the presser today is that a lot of
- 38:43those former coaches will have opportunities to remain here.
- 38:47But you know, and unfortunately, I just don't think that's kind
- 38:51of the the nature here. One thing that Rogers brought up
- 38:54was that one thing he liked about Campbell when he came from
- 38:57Toledo to Iowa State is he had the authority, he he brought his
- 39:01guys with him. I think that's just kind of how
- 39:04it goes in the in the current world of college athletics.
- 39:07And Matt's probably going to try and bring a lot of his guys out
- 39:10there. And I think Jimmy Rogers will
- 39:12probably bring a lot of his staff from Washington State
- 39:15here. I think that's just the nature
- 39:16of it. Bill seals Bill, we're short on
- 39:18time. We will try and squeeze you in
- 39:21again this week. Appreciate the contribution
- 39:24cyclonereport.com part of on three media. cyclonereport.com.
- 39:29Bill, thank you. We'll run you down later in the
- 39:30week. Appreciate it.
- 39:31Looking forward to it. Have a good one guys.
- 39:33Good. To talk to you.
- 39:34All right, more from Bill Seals later in the week.
- 39:35We'll take a time out, come back, finish up our number one.
- 39:38I'm Miller and Condon on the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 39:50I'm Miller Condon. Welcome back.
- 39:52Couple of minutes left in our number one just a real quick
- 39:56thing on the NFL and and no, not the ending of the Denver Raiders
- 39:59game, which was an all time bad beat.
- 40:03You got to help me out with Isaiah Likely's touchdown.
- 40:07No, not a. Touchdown.
- 40:08It was a touchdown. It was a touchdown.
- 40:10You're right. What in the world?
- 40:12Trent is going on. He caught the ball with his arms
- 40:15extended. The DP is behind him.
- 40:18He takes a step in the end zone. He takes another step in the end
- 40:23zone on his third step. The DP knocked the ball out from
- 40:28his hands. What are we doing?
- 40:30I don't get it. I was completely baffled by it,
- 40:32coupled with all you have to do is get the break, the plane nose
- 40:37of the football to the very front part of the goal line,
- 40:40that white stripe, the front part, that's it.
- 40:42That's it, Your touchdown, arms up.
- 40:44But you need 3 steps in the end. It's the same thing at
- 40:47completing the process. It's the Kelvin Johnson thing
- 40:49from 15. Years ago now, bubbling the ball
- 40:51at all, he had firm possession. He was holding it like a hot
- 40:55loaf of something right out in front of him, his arms fully
- 40:57extended that. First step down, he has full
- 41:00control touchdown. The second step, full control
- 41:03off the ball. Third step down, it gets punched
- 41:06out. I don't get.
- 41:08It, I don't get it. I don't get it.
- 41:10What a terrible call. What a terrible call.
- 41:14If that's a drop, he'd fit in well with the Chiefs.
- 41:18You know, I should feel better about that.
- 41:20I don't. For some reason I don't.
- 41:24I don't what. Are you softening?
- 41:26Yeah. Right.
- 41:27I should be on cloud 9. I thought you were going to be
- 41:30our two next Bama. Bob Scott Dockerman, Mr. Monday
- 41:33Night. Stick with us.
