- 0:25Speaker 1: into a July fourth holiday weekend. You can bring us
- 0:28Speaker 1: along with you for your listening pleasure. It is part
- 0:32Speaker 1: two of our annual summer mail Bag episodes, where we
- 0:37Speaker 1: answer your burning questions right here on the show. Simon
- 0:42Speaker 1: doesn't know this yet, but I'm changing an answer from
- 0:44Speaker 1: the previous mail bag episode. Joining me is my co host,
- 0:50Speaker 1: my companion, Mike cam Padre my BFF Professional Better Simon
- 0:53Speaker 1: Hunter et O. Soymon, Hello Chad.
- 0:57Speaker 2: The true dog days of summer. It's in the Northeast.
- 0:59Speaker 2: Became go outside anymore. It's so humid and hot, and
- 1:03Speaker 2: basically all I'm doing is just enjoying football, right, just
- 1:07Speaker 2: getting ready for the season. So yeah, this next month
- 1:09Speaker 2: is the last real push, right chat, It's the last
- 1:12Speaker 2: slow days and then it just starts speeding up.
- 1:15Speaker 1: It's like three weeks until training camp starts great and
- 1:20Speaker 1: it is on us in a snap, and then all
- 1:23Speaker 1: of a sudden, we're gonna have to start making choices.
- 1:25Speaker 1: Are we watching Pennant race potential winning games in baseball
- 1:32Speaker 1: or are we watching a Thursday night preseason game between
- 1:38Speaker 1: the Panthers and the Cardinals to see if we can
- 1:41Speaker 1: get anything learned.
- 1:43Speaker 3: But Bear's got the Hall of Fame game, right, That's right,
- 1:46Speaker 3: that's I mean, come on, hey, listen, I'm a huge
- 1:51Speaker 3: Hall of Fame game guy.
- 1:54Speaker 1: I think everybody knows at this point. One of my
- 1:57Speaker 1: first ever assignments when I was a nineteen year old
- 2:03Speaker 1: intern at Pro Football Weekly was convincing them to let
- 2:08Speaker 1: me go to Canton to write a story for Pro
- 2:12Speaker 1: Football Weekly about the Hall of Fame and the inductions
- 2:16Speaker 1: into the Hall of Fame. I have a very very
- 2:19Speaker 1: special spot in my heart for the Hall of Fame.
- 2:21Speaker 2: Maybe you should go for their first Williams game.
- 2:27Speaker 1: Yeah, I got it, I'll bet it. As a reminder,
- 2:30Speaker 1: the Favorite podcast is presented by bet three six five.

- 3:22Speaker 1: In our previous mailbag, Simon, someone asked about advice, and
- 3:28Speaker 1: you know what, we always get questions about advice, career, advice, life, advice,
- 3:34Speaker 1: whatever it is, and we both sort of landed on
- 3:37Speaker 1: something that I feel like is the same answer everybody gives,
- 3:42Speaker 1: which is take risks, don't be afraid things will work out.
- 3:48Speaker 1: I'm a thousand years older than you. I can look
- 3:51Speaker 1: back and be like, oh my god, I should have
- 3:54Speaker 1: taken even more risks, and like nothing I did before
- 3:58Speaker 1: I turned thirty mattered, and I was too focused on
- 4:01Speaker 1: being perfect and trying to get every job and the
- 4:03Speaker 1: next job in the ladder and doing those jobs well,
- 4:06Speaker 1: and like missing out on other opportunities that might have
- 4:09Speaker 1: been as much fun or led to different or just
- 4:12Speaker 1: as interesting a career. But the answer is I thought
- 4:18Speaker 1: about this when I was walking the dog. After we
- 4:20Speaker 1: answer that it's the fucking people. The number of people
- 4:25Speaker 1: I know who have taken calculated risks on jobs and
- 4:30Speaker 1: then ended up in a trap working with the shittiest people.
- 4:34Speaker 1: I can count on a thousand fingers, and every single
- 4:39Speaker 1: person I talk to who is my age will now
- 4:43Speaker 1: tell you the most important factor when thinking about who
- 4:47Speaker 1: you're going to spend your time with. And this is
- 4:49Speaker 1: really focused on career. It's about the people. Like you
- 4:54Speaker 1: can't even work at a great place if the people
- 4:56Speaker 1: you're working with you can't stand if they're bad people,
- 4:59Speaker 1: if they're political, if they're stab and whatever. But I
- 5:04Speaker 1: got that sort of someone mentioned that to me, and
- 5:06Speaker 1: I'm like, oh, yeah, that totally makes sense.
- 5:09Speaker 2: No, that's yeah, it's probably number one. Right Like this,
- 5:13Speaker 2: I think most people in life would take less money
- 5:17Speaker 2: if they knew they'd be working with people that didn't
- 5:19Speaker 2: make them just dread every day of their existence because
- 5:22Speaker 2: they're having to deal with this person. So I'm right
- 5:25Speaker 2: there with you, Tred. I've worked some horrible jobs with
- 5:28Speaker 2: some horrible people that yeah, like, there's there's nothing worse
- 5:33Speaker 2: than that, right, because then you can't sleep the Sunday
- 5:35Speaker 2: night because you know you're about to spend all day Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday,
- 5:39Speaker 2: Friday with this person. So now that's a great answer.
- 5:42Speaker 1: I remember I had gone away on a trip with
- 5:45Speaker 1: my wife, like in two thousand, you know, we were
- 5:49Speaker 1: barely married, and we were coming back and I was
- 5:52Speaker 1: working on ESPN the magazine, and I was working for
- 5:54Speaker 1: someone I really couldn't stand, who had made my life miserable,
- 5:59Speaker 1: truly miserable. And We're in a cab, we're leaving LaGuardia
- 6:04Speaker 1: on the highway, going over the ben Triborough Bridge, and
- 6:10Speaker 1: I'm like, I can't go back. And this was a
- 6:13Speaker 1: dream job, right, Like I had gone from sid ESPN
- 6:16Speaker 1: the magazine. I was covering the NFL. I like, it's
- 6:18Speaker 1: all I wanted.
- 6:19Speaker 2: What a great day you just said that day or
- 6:21Speaker 2: you get to leave that job. Oh, I'm like, God,
- 6:24Speaker 2: what a great day.
- 6:25Speaker 1: I'm like, I can't go back, And my wife says,
- 6:27Speaker 1: what do you mean? I go. I can't work with
- 6:30Speaker 1: this person anymore. I hate them. They are terrible. And
- 6:35Speaker 1: within a month, with a month, I found a new job,
- 6:38Speaker 1: and you know, that company cratered and I ended up
- 6:43Speaker 1: going back. That was actually right when I was about
- 6:46Speaker 1: to write the odds sports betting book. Got to do
- 6:49Speaker 1: to write the book. Wanted to go write the book
- 6:52Speaker 1: ESPN and this boss would not give me the support
- 6:55Speaker 1: to go write the book. So I found a new
- 6:57Speaker 1: job so I could write the book while I was
- 6:58Speaker 1: doing that job. And that job and it was and
- 7:01Speaker 1: then I went back to Espano and it worked out great,
- 7:03Speaker 1: and that person was no longer there by the way.
- 7:06Speaker 1: So yeah, it's the people people, speaking of which Bill
- 7:12Speaker 1: Walton passed away a few weeks ago, about six weeks ago.
- 7:17Speaker 1: This is a great question. It feels like there are
- 7:19Speaker 1: not enough truly great color and play by play broadcasters
- 7:24Speaker 1: for how much live sports we watch. Now, who are
- 7:27Speaker 1: some of your favorites left favorites of all time?
- 7:31Speaker 2: That's gonna be tough because I honestly watched about ninety
- 7:34Speaker 2: nine percent of sport events with mute on. I'm just
- 7:38Speaker 2: one of those people. Either I'm talking to people, I
- 7:40Speaker 2: got music going, and football it's even worse. I mean,
- 7:45Speaker 2: I just can't do it. Let's'm at a party with
- 7:47Speaker 2: a bunch of people, then I'll listen to it after
- 7:49Speaker 2: the you know, if I'm with people, of course i'll
- 7:51Speaker 2: listen to it. But yeah, for me, this is gonna
- 7:55Speaker 2: be a cop ound. The only thing I listened to
- 7:57Speaker 2: my favorite commentary it's soccer.
- 8:00Speaker 4: So not scratch some eyes, you are really seeing me
- 8:04Speaker 4: must extraordinary fits up. There's no feeling like not feeling.
- 8:10Speaker 2: Just hearing the British or Scottish or Irish accent talking
- 8:13Speaker 2: about soccer. I just love it, and it just they
- 8:18Speaker 2: do it a different style than Americans as well. So
- 8:22Speaker 2: that's that's a cop thought answer. I'm trying to think
- 8:24Speaker 2: my favorite America. I mean, it's depressing when the few
- 8:26Speaker 2: people that make me laugh and I feel like they
- 8:30Speaker 2: provide some knowledge. But I like to talk about him
- 8:32Speaker 2: because it's fun. It's Tony Romo, Like Tony Romo is
- 8:35Speaker 2: turning to this drunk uncle at the party. Well it
- 8:38Speaker 2: looks like it discombobulated themselves.
- 8:40Speaker 5: He's I don't know, Jim, I don't know if he's
- 8:43Speaker 5: gonna do this, Like even the Super Bowl he wouldn't
- 8:45Speaker 5: shut the fuck up, and the most important final play
- 8:48Speaker 5: of the game, like he's talking over him when he's
- 8:51Speaker 5: trying to make themselves important call of the game, or
- 8:53Speaker 5: my home's about to walk off, like, I don't know.
- 8:55Speaker 2: It's fun. Like Tony Romo, he's the perfect type of
- 8:59Speaker 2: he really cares and it feels like he's out partying
- 9:02Speaker 2: all night and he lost his voice the night before
- 9:04Speaker 2: he does a game like. He's just a really fun
- 9:06Speaker 2: balance to me. So yeah, I can't believe it. But
- 9:10Speaker 2: of all the people that cracked me up, Tony rowe
- 9:12Speaker 2: might be number one in sports right now.
- 9:13Speaker 1: So this is a very specific answer, and I think
- 9:17Speaker 1: people who are Bulls fans are from Chicago will appreciate this.
- 9:22Speaker 1: But the Bulls have been very lucky in that they
- 9:25Speaker 1: have had really great broadcasters over the years. During the
- 9:31Speaker 1: Michael Jordan years, Jim Durham and Johnny red Kerr were amazing,
- 9:37Speaker 1: and you would watch a game with Johnny red Kerr,
- 9:40Speaker 1: who was an old time Bulls player and it was
- 9:42Speaker 1: the best of homersm it was the best of inside basketball.
- 9:46Speaker 1: You just fucking loved it. And I feel like Stacy
- 9:50Speaker 1: King is the greatest sort of He carries on that
- 9:56Speaker 1: legacy of Johnny red Kerr as he is so funny.
- 10:00Speaker 1: His gimmicks are so perfect. He will sing a commercial
- 10:07Speaker 1: like You've got a guy who advertises for insurance in
- 10:14Speaker 1: every game and he will sing the jingle. His phrases
- 10:18Speaker 1: are awesome. He loves the bulls and also he's a
- 10:22Speaker 1: mountain of a man. And the Bulls play by play
- 10:25Speaker 1: is Adam Amin And when they go to the to
- 10:28Speaker 1: the table of them together for their shots, you know
- 10:30Speaker 1: before the quarter, it's like an elephant and a mouse.
- 10:36Speaker 1: And they are fantastic together and then so interesting to
- 10:42Speaker 1: look at as to diametrically opposed size human beings. Love
- 10:49Speaker 1: love love listening to them do Bulls games. They are
- 10:53Speaker 1: amazing at their jobs, So that would be one. I
- 10:57Speaker 1: also mentioned favorite of all time Johnny Redkerr. Look I'm
- 11:01Speaker 1: gonna go way Homer on this. I grew up with
- 11:04Speaker 1: Harry Carey in the Cups games, so like coming home
- 11:07Speaker 1: after school for day games with Harry Carey. It's like
- 11:12Speaker 1: story time every day, and so in fact, I loved
- 11:16Speaker 1: Harry Carey so much. When I left Sports Illustrated, they
- 11:21Speaker 1: had these great this great library of clips and photos
- 11:27Speaker 1: that you could access if you were doing research on
- 11:30Speaker 1: a story or fact checking a story. Again, this is
- 11:33Speaker 1: like when they had librarians, three or four librarians full time.
- 11:36Speaker 1: They're going through every paper, every magazine around the country,
- 11:40Speaker 1: clipping things, putting them in folders you can go check
- 11:42Speaker 1: you like, you don't have the Internet to check this shit, right.
- 11:45Speaker 1: They also had all these pictures and I stole a
- 11:47Speaker 1: picture of Harry Carey in the broadcast booth just in
- 11:53Speaker 1: his boxers because it was so hot, and I brought
- 11:56Speaker 1: it with me to ESPN and then I had it
- 11:58Speaker 1: in my house and it point I made it my
- 12:00Speaker 1: Twitter avatar, and I was edteran chief of ESPN the magazine,
- 12:05Speaker 1: and we did an issue where we had Kobe Bryant
- 12:07Speaker 1: and Nicki Minaj on the cover and uh, Nicki Minaj
- 12:12Speaker 1: and like you're on set with the with the athletes
- 12:15Speaker 1: and the celebrities. You're not giving them like the right
- 12:19Speaker 1: of refusal on a picture, but you're showing them the
- 12:22Speaker 1: pictures as they go so like, if there's something they
- 12:25Speaker 1: truly hate, we're not going to run it. Like they're
- 12:28Speaker 1: not going to see what the final image is, but
- 12:30Speaker 1: they're gonna feel comfortable that I'm only seeing images that
- 12:32Speaker 1: they've at least feel comfortable with. So we do the
- 12:36Speaker 1: cover and Nicki Minaj hates the way her forehead looks.
- 12:42Speaker 1: People would nothing big, get cash make complain of that.
- 12:46Speaker 1: Look at what you just saw.
- 12:47Speaker 4: This is.
- 12:52Speaker 1: Like and like people are going after ESPN the magazine.
- 12:56Speaker 1: So it gets to the point where I have to
- 12:57Speaker 1: put out a statement about not photoshopping Nicki Minaj's forehead
- 13:04Speaker 1: in the issue. So I put out a statement, We're
- 13:08Speaker 1: so thrilled Ms Minaje would do the cover with us.
- 13:11Speaker 1: It's really important. You know, she's an icon, but the
- 13:17Speaker 1: forehead she walked in with is the one that is
- 13:19Speaker 1: on the cover. We don't photoshop covers. And all of
- 13:25Speaker 1: a sudden, my Twitter dms start blowing up and people
- 13:33Speaker 1: are saying, who's this dude? Why is he so fucking old?
- 13:37Speaker 1: Why does he have man boobs? He shouldn't be anywhere
- 13:40Speaker 1: with his shirt off, And I'm like, what are they
- 13:44Speaker 1: talking about? Where have they seen pictures of me? And
- 13:46Speaker 1: then I realize my avatar is Harry Carey with his
- 13:50Speaker 1: shirt off, and NICKI minaj. Fans don't know who Harry
- 13:55Speaker 1: Carey is, so they think I'm Harry Carey and that
- 13:59Speaker 1: I'm in the picture with my shirt off.
- 14:03Speaker 2: Oh man, Well for you on Homer, before we remove topics,
- 14:06Speaker 2: I'll have to go. I'll have to throw John Cruck down.
- 14:08Speaker 2: I'm going one Homer pick. I'll go with John Kruck.
- 14:10Speaker 2: I mean, like you just said, if you have a
- 14:11Speaker 2: good baseball storyteller's a perfect sport. It's just on the background.
- 14:15Speaker 2: You don't even need to watch. And yeah, John Kruck
- 14:18Speaker 2: right now, Philadelphia is by far the best going Simon.
- 14:21Speaker 1: Can you name the fastest growing ticketing app in the
- 14:24Speaker 1: United States?
- 14:25Speaker 2: Game Time?
- 14:26Speaker 1: That's right, It's game Time. I love Game Time for
- 14:28Speaker 1: two reasons. First, they still sponsor this show. Second, I
- 14:32Speaker 1: use game Time all the time. They have amazing last
- 14:35Speaker 1: minute deals, including pro in college sports. I'm actually opening
- 14:39Speaker 1: the game Time app right now from my house here
- 14:42Speaker 1: in Connecticut. Guess what the hottest team in baseball? The
- 14:44Speaker 1: New York Yankees. I can get into see them for
- 14:49Speaker 1: thirty bucks no matter where you live. Download the game
- 14:53Speaker 1: Time App. Get out have some fun this week. You
- 14:56Speaker 1: deserve it. You can redeem code favorite for twenty dollars
- 14:59Speaker 1: off your first purchase. Terms apply again his download the

- 15:12Speaker 1: Football question fresh Start on a minimum contract. Would you
- 15:19Speaker 1: rather have Zach Wilson age twenty four or Joe Flacco
- 15:25Speaker 1: age thirty nine.
- 15:30Speaker 2: I would definitely go Zach Wilson, even though I think
- 15:33Speaker 2: he's broken and I have zero faith there's gonna be
- 15:38Speaker 2: upside there. Like the kid's got a great arm, he's
- 15:41Speaker 2: got some athleticism to him. It just to me seems
- 15:44Speaker 2: like it's all mental. And you know, Joe Flacco, we
- 15:48Speaker 2: love him, but let's not get it twisted right, like
- 15:51Speaker 2: he's going to be an up and down quarterback. He is,
- 15:53Speaker 2: what you just said, thirty nine years old. So yeah,
- 15:57Speaker 2: that's it's it's at your question. I love that's when
- 16:01Speaker 2: we've asked it, But yeah, I'll go I'll go with
- 16:03Speaker 2: youth and upside over then a thirty nine year old
- 16:07Speaker 2: that I think, I mean last year was lightning in
- 16:09Speaker 2: a bottle. I don't know if you can ever capture
- 16:11Speaker 2: that again. But I believe it's on the Colts. So
- 16:13Speaker 2: you know him and Shane Steich and you never know,
- 16:15Speaker 2: you never know.
- 16:17Speaker 1: Uh, I would need to know more about the parameters.
- 16:21Speaker 1: Am I thinking for a year or am I thinking
- 16:23Speaker 1: for multiple years? If it's multiple years, Zach Wilson, If
- 16:25Speaker 1: it's one year, Yeah, let's take Joe Flacco. That's because
- 16:29Speaker 1: I've seen him do it often enough in high pressure
- 16:33Speaker 1: situations with the right coaching and understanding his own limits.
- 16:37Speaker 1: That if you need Joe Flacco to go in and
- 16:40Speaker 1: win you two or three games, I would find value
- 16:42Speaker 1: on that. I don't think any of us would find
- 16:45Speaker 1: value in Zach Wilson. I believe he is broken. I
- 16:47Speaker 1: think he's been broken since the day he entered the league.
- 16:50Speaker 1: He was never as good as anybody thought he was
- 16:52Speaker 1: going to be. You and I believed he was a
- 16:56Speaker 1: terrible choice, and that at BYU he got by played
- 17:00Speaker 1: saying inferior competition, with a superior offensive line and a
- 17:03Speaker 1: wicked good arm. But you're not making difficult throws when
- 17:06Speaker 1: you're playing BYU, but behind a line with NFL caliber
- 17:11Speaker 1: offensive lineman. So Joe FLACU or is Bob Scocci likes
- 17:17Speaker 1: to say better. FLACU is the choice there. NFL Hall
- 17:26Speaker 1: of Famer Larry Allen passed away tragically fifty two years old.
- 17:32Speaker 1: Titanically strong, infamously nasty on the field, Many experts have
- 17:38Speaker 1: called him the greatest offensive lineman of all time. Are
- 17:43Speaker 1: there any current offensive lineman who will end up deserving
- 17:47Speaker 1: similar accolades in ten or twenty years. I have someone
- 17:51Speaker 1: very specific in mind.
- 17:53Speaker 2: Yeah, And just to pick back and Larry Owen, I
- 17:55Speaker 2: heard saw a really funny story about when they were
- 17:58Speaker 2: going to run the ball. You sorry, go on cho,
- 18:01Speaker 2: the train's coming, And I can't imagine how scary that
- 18:05Speaker 2: must have been on the other side, that he was
- 18:08Speaker 2: telling you what was coming and you knew you couldn't
- 18:09Speaker 2: stop it.
- 18:11Speaker 6: Hey, this is Matt. Just want to jump in really quickly.
- 18:13Speaker 6: Growing up as a Bill's fan in the nineteen nineties,
- 18:16Speaker 6: I certainly hated Larry Allen's guts because he was an
- 18:21Speaker 6: unbelievable force for a team. I absolutely hated the Dallas Cowboys,
- 18:25Speaker 6: but I certainly believe Larry Allen was the greatest offensive
- 18:28Speaker 6: lineman to ever live, and my favorite Larry Allen's story
- 18:32Speaker 6: comes from noted badass and nine hundred inch neck owner
- 18:37Speaker 6: to Keo Spikes of the Bengals and Buffalo Bills. Here
- 18:42Speaker 6: is his story from the BTM podcast about Larry Allen.
- 18:47Speaker 4: He then took two steps and he threw me back.
- 18:51Speaker 4: As I was going back. Whatever you do, don't fall
- 18:55Speaker 4: because he is going to sur plant you and everybody
- 18:58Speaker 4: in the league is going to see. Spikes got folded
- 19:02Speaker 4: up like a folding chaircake, pancake, Molly w.
- 19:08Speaker 2: Peter, did you that's what I want to do.
- 19:13Speaker 4: When we turned on the field, the cats in the
- 19:15Speaker 4: meeting room was like, Spikes, you can bear, crawl fast cancer.
- 19:20Speaker 2: I did not want to fall.
- 19:21Speaker 4: I was like this on the ground because I was like,
- 19:23Speaker 4: I know he's trying to finish me. I actually crawled
- 19:26Speaker 4: like right off over by the sideline, just to make
- 19:29Speaker 4: sure you know what I'm saying.
- 19:30Speaker 2: I looked up and he was looking at me. Had
- 19:33Speaker 2: a dip in his mouth too. He played with a dip.
- 19:35Speaker 4: Yeah, this he was nasty bro for me.
- 19:40Speaker 2: I'll go Jason Peters, the bodyguard, like the man came
- 19:44Speaker 2: to the league as a tight end. I moved to
- 19:45Speaker 2: tackle and the rest is history. I mean, one of
- 19:48Speaker 2: the best trades he was ever ever made. He was
- 19:52Speaker 2: just incredible every since, even the year we won the
- 19:54Speaker 2: Super Bowl he wasn't playing, you know, Brandon Brooks Slain
- 19:57Speaker 2: Johnson talked about how he was just with them every day,
- 20:00Speaker 2: talking technique, trying to help them out, like just the
- 20:03Speaker 2: Cossumm pro. So, yeah, if I'm thinking of freaks like that,
- 20:07Speaker 2: I mean, obviously, you know, Larry Allen's famous for bench
- 20:10Speaker 2: pressing seven hundred pounds. I don't think. I don't think
- 20:13Speaker 2: that guy exists in the league anymore. I mean, that's
- 20:15Speaker 2: country strong. But yeah, I'll go. I'll go. Jason Peters.
- 20:20Speaker 1: I'm surprised you didn't go with Trent Williams.
- 20:23Speaker 2: I love Trent, I do. I just he never played
- 20:26Speaker 2: for me, so I'm a little biased.
- 20:28Speaker 1: I mean, Trent Williams to me, he's the sort of
- 20:34Speaker 1: cornerstone almost, you know, in the most figurative way to
- 20:40Speaker 1: what has been the most consistently awesome offense. He did
- 20:44Speaker 1: it in Washington, He's done it in San Francisco. It
- 20:49Speaker 1: is a team that is so different when he's not playing.
- 20:52Speaker 1: You hear from everybody you see in the stats, how
- 20:55Speaker 1: much how well he can protect, but also what an
- 20:58Speaker 1: incredible run blocker is, how he can pick up blocks
- 21:01Speaker 1: down field like this guy. To me, he's obviously a
- 21:06Speaker 1: surefire Hall of Famer. And it's the one thing like
- 21:08Speaker 1: I think the I think the Niners every year are
- 21:12Speaker 1: going in. Please give us one more year, Please give
- 21:14Speaker 1: us one more year, Please give us one more year.
- 21:16Speaker 1: If you were to pull players, I bet they would
- 21:18Speaker 1: all say Trent Williams easily the top tackle in the NFL.
- 21:25Speaker 2: I don't know. I would say he's really good, but
- 21:27Speaker 2: he's not as great as you think he is. He
- 21:29Speaker 2: gets beat. He does get beat. So I agree, though
- 21:33Speaker 2: he is incredible run blocking tackle, but you know these
- 21:38Speaker 2: pass rushers they get him. He gets beat, and like
- 21:40Speaker 2: you can't say the same about Peters Man. The dude
- 21:43Speaker 2: was incredible. If you if we go back and look
- 21:45Speaker 2: at the stats, so I say, recency biased, Chad's falling
- 21:48Speaker 2: of the recency bias.
- 21:49Speaker 1: It's possible. It's possible. I'm thinking about last last year
- 21:52Speaker 1: when you love.
- 21:53Speaker 2: That forty nine er. Goddamn do you love though, dude?
- 21:55Speaker 1: When they went in that three hole and they weren't
- 21:58Speaker 1: playing with Trent Williams, and and Debo and then all
- 22:03Speaker 1: of a sudden, like now, that was an.
- 22:05Speaker 2: Amazing stat Evant had. Right. They were like a totally
- 22:07Speaker 2: different team without him.
- 22:09Speaker 1: A different freaking team. Okay, you just mentioned Tony Romo,
- 22:13Speaker 1: which NFL quarterback from the nineteen nineties would achieve even
- 22:20Speaker 1: more in today's NFL. Brett Favre, Troy Aikman, Warren Moon,
- 22:27Speaker 1: Kerry Collins, Jeff George.
- 22:30Speaker 2: I'll go Warren Moon. Just he dealt with racism and
- 22:33Speaker 2: a lot of bullshit that he would never have to
- 22:35Speaker 2: deal with nowadays. And he was so ahead of his
- 22:38Speaker 2: time for what he was, right, I go. People say
- 22:40Speaker 2: the same thing about Raynall Cunninghame. I think Warren Moon
- 22:42Speaker 2: is better than Rayall Cunning him, to be honest with you.
- 22:44Speaker 2: So yeah, warn Moon got such a raw deal. He
- 22:47Speaker 2: would be perfect for this NFL. Like everything he does, well,
- 22:52Speaker 2: you know, the big arm, the athleticism. I mean, Anthony
- 22:56Speaker 2: Richardson's a freak. We all agree, right, Warren Moon was
- 22:59Speaker 2: kind of built like that. He was so big, so strong. Yeah,
- 23:03Speaker 2: just thinking about him, it's it would have been crazy
- 23:06Speaker 2: to see warming playing nowadays. Right, That's just again perfect
- 23:09Speaker 2: name too, got a great name. I would have loved
- 23:12Speaker 2: to see him playing in the league nowadays.
- 23:14Speaker 1: Yeah, it's so interesting you say that, because that was
- 23:16Speaker 1: going to be my first instinct to like his ability
- 23:20Speaker 1: to throw the ball and the stats he racked up
- 23:24Speaker 1: even before like the NFL was what it is today
- 23:27Speaker 1: where it's so passer friendly. I mean, he was truly
- 23:31Speaker 1: prolific as a thrower. But then I think about Brett
- 23:36Speaker 1: Frog was prolific and playing in that era, could he
- 23:41Speaker 1: have won even more Super Bowls?
- 23:44Speaker 2: Right, James Winston? Yeah, that's right, to get another world
- 23:48Speaker 2: he would have been Jameis Winston. Honestly, he just he
- 23:50Speaker 2: Luckily he was on a team filled with Hall of
- 23:53Speaker 2: Fame coaches, right Amy Reid with his QB coach like
- 23:57Speaker 2: you know, Homegren, all of it, like that whole thing.
- 23:59Speaker 2: Mary like Mary like Mary Ucci, Mary Ucci. Yeah, Like
- 24:03Speaker 2: they had so much good coaching on that team. But
- 24:05Speaker 2: I love where you're coming from too, because I just
- 24:07Speaker 2: I mean Brett Farr he was what one of the
- 24:10Speaker 2: most exciting fun players to watch and a guy we're
- 24:13Speaker 2: talking about Flack we are thirty nine, Like that's what
- 24:16Speaker 2: Brett Farv was right on that crazy room with the Vikings.
- 24:18Speaker 2: He was an old man still doing it, so I
- 24:21Speaker 2: can I can see where you're coming from. Brett fav
- 24:22Speaker 2: would be really fun to watch in this day and age.
- 24:25Speaker 1: So Frey Aikman, though, take Carry Collins off the list.
- 24:31Speaker 1: Like Carry Collins was a lucky circumstance, right place, right time,
- 24:40Speaker 1: right team moment. Trey Aikman famously not the guy who
- 24:46Speaker 1: put up amazing numbers. The team was built around defense.
- 24:52Speaker 1: The team was built a brown EMMITTT. Smith. The team
- 24:54Speaker 1: was built around Larry Allen and that offensive line Nate Newton.
- 24:58Speaker 1: Right in this era with offense being much more wide open,
- 25:07Speaker 1: Troy Aikman hire up even more stats and the Cowboys
- 25:11Speaker 1: win as many Super Bowls as they won.
- 25:14Speaker 2: No, I mean they had a Hall of Fame full back,
- 25:17Speaker 2: hall of Fame running back. He just talked about Hall
- 25:19Speaker 2: of Fame offensive lineman, and then a Hall of Famer
- 25:21Speaker 2: on the outside. And they had a bunch of guys
- 25:23Speaker 2: on defense that were great players as well. It was
- 25:25Speaker 2: just and I mean now you mixing that they kept
- 25:27Speaker 2: playing Buffalo. It was just a perfect time for the
- 25:30Speaker 2: Cowboys that they kept you know, then then the Giants,
- 25:33Speaker 2: they got a couple of rings off that Buffalo team.
- 25:36Speaker 2: That's like that changes history, right, that that gives the
- 25:39Speaker 2: Giants a really rich history, and the same with the Cowboys.
- 25:43Speaker 2: So Troy Aikman couldn't have timed it any better for
- 25:46Speaker 2: his skill set, what he did so well, and another
- 25:50Speaker 2: guy who the NFL chewed him up and spit him out.
- 25:52Speaker 2: I mean, you go back and watch the hits he
- 25:54Speaker 2: took in college before he even got to the league,
- 25:56Speaker 2: he was already on his way out. His body just
- 26:00Speaker 2: been so beat up. And those were back in the
- 26:02Speaker 2: day where like you know, you tear something in their shoulder,
- 26:03Speaker 2: they just give you a shot, Like they're not giving
- 26:06Speaker 2: you a surgery, right, They're gonna be like, no, you got
- 26:07Speaker 2: to finish this season kind of deal back then. So Troy,
- 26:11Speaker 2: I always joke I think he's one of the most
- 26:13Speaker 2: overrated quarterbacks ever. But I think for that error, he
- 26:16Speaker 2: was so perfect because he was a good quarterback, a
- 26:18Speaker 2: good game manager, and he didn't need the accolades, right,
- 26:21Speaker 2: Like he just never seem even nowadays, like he doesn't
- 26:24Speaker 2: seem like he's got that type of ego where you know,
- 26:28Speaker 2: some of their guys probably want to dealt with that
- 26:30Speaker 2: great where he knows he's a punching bag, right, Like
- 26:32Speaker 2: everyone talks about Emmett Smith like that's that's the guy
- 26:36Speaker 2: from that team. So now he's the perfect perfect quarterback
- 26:39Speaker 2: in that perfect era he would be In my opinion,
- 26:45Speaker 2: I wouldn't even say he'd be like a Minshew. I
- 26:47Speaker 2: think he'd be worse than Minshew in this era, Like
- 26:49Speaker 2: at least Minshew can get around. I know you think
- 26:52Speaker 2: I'm a hater, do about that?
- 26:52Speaker 1: That is absurd.
- 26:54Speaker 2: I think that's how much harder and better it is
- 26:56Speaker 2: nowadays to play like you have to be so much
- 26:59Speaker 2: more athletic and smarter than you were in the nineties. Like, dude,
- 27:02Speaker 2: the nineties literally ran two defenses. There were it's a joke,
- 27:06Speaker 2: like you go back, sports used to be so dumb,
- 27:09Speaker 2: where now it's so advanced. So I get where you're
- 27:12Speaker 2: coming from. I just I can't read my head around
- 27:14Speaker 2: Troy Aikman succeed in this league. I probably would have
- 27:17Speaker 2: a fifth or six round grade.
- 27:18Speaker 1: On the tray. Agman comp is brock perty.
- 27:23Speaker 2: Fuck No, dude, brock Brady is a good athlete. Like
- 27:28Speaker 2: I don't know what I know. It's because I'm coming
- 27:30Speaker 2: off as a huge hater right now, when I think
- 27:32Speaker 2: of him, it's just like, oh, man, I can't see
- 27:37Speaker 2: him working out, like I just he doesn't have the tools.
- 27:40Speaker 2: But again, that was your era. I could be way
- 27:42Speaker 2: off here. I just I just can't see it.
- 27:44Speaker 1: Yeah, I actually that was my era. I covered that
- 27:48Speaker 1: Cowboys team often. You couldn't be more off on Trey Agman.
- 27:54Speaker 1: Do you care about the Summer Olympics and what is
- 27:58Speaker 1: your favorite part?
- 28:00Speaker 4: Uh?
- 28:01Speaker 2: Yeah, I like the Summer Olympics. I mean as a man,
- 28:06Speaker 2: my favorite thing to watch is definitely the volleyball if
- 28:10Speaker 2: i'm women's volleyball, preferably. Uh. For sport wise, I don't know.
- 28:18Speaker 2: It's tough is table tennis summer because I do love
- 28:21Speaker 2: the table tennis? Yeah, Like I like all the stupid stuff,
- 28:24Speaker 2: but at the end of the day, it's gonna be
- 28:26Speaker 2: track and field. Like the fastest man in the world
- 28:28Speaker 2: that whole you saying, Bolt think too. I was so
- 28:30Speaker 2: caught up that the swimming Michael Phelips, So definitely those
- 28:33Speaker 2: type of sports. I just get all in on.
- 28:37Speaker 1: Love the Summer Olympics. I think it's an amazing I
- 28:40Speaker 1: think the pageantry is amazing, the sport that I've covered
- 28:44Speaker 1: two summer Olympics and one year. I don't know if
- 28:51Speaker 1: I've told this story. Matt Mitchell, knight yell at me
- 28:55Speaker 1: if I start telling it again. Have I told the
- 28:57Speaker 1: story about covering the Atlanta Olympics and the bombing. So
- 29:05Speaker 1: ninety six, I'm working for Sports Illustrated. Sports Illustrated goes
- 29:09Speaker 1: down and they're one of the Olympic sponsors, and we
- 29:12Speaker 1: decided we're going to put out a daily magazine. So
- 29:14Speaker 1: there's a staff of us that are covering sports during
- 29:18Speaker 1: the day, writing about then, and like publishing the magazine
- 29:22Speaker 1: at one o'clock in the morning, and it's being distributed
- 29:25Speaker 1: throughout the throughout Atlanta. That that next day right full
- 29:30Speaker 1: coverage of the Olympics SSI Quality SI Form SI magazine.
- 29:36Speaker 1: And so I'm in the media center, which overlooks Centennial Park,
- 29:43Speaker 1: and it's nearly deadline, and there's this massive boom, like
- 29:50Speaker 1: you hear it, you feel it, you see light, and
- 29:54Speaker 1: nobody knows what it is. At the time, I'm thinking
- 29:56Speaker 1: to myself, that's weird. There was no we all knew
- 29:59Speaker 1: what the weather was supposed to be every day. There's
- 30:00Speaker 1: no rain forecast for today, and So then I start
- 30:05Speaker 1: to walk out of our sort of newsroom into the
- 30:09Speaker 1: main media center, and in my head, I'm really going
- 30:13Speaker 1: to look over Centennial Park. At this point, there's like,
- 30:16Speaker 1: you know, people buzzing that something had happened in Stanglo Park.
- 30:20Speaker 1: So I'm leaving the newsroom to go to the cafeteria
- 30:25Speaker 1: that overlooks Santanagalo Park and get to like be a
- 30:28Speaker 1: gawker through the windows. The editor of the magazine looks
- 30:33Speaker 1: at me and says, Chad, great idea. Take this cell phone,
- 30:38Speaker 1: which is like a brick at this time. Take this
- 30:41Speaker 1: cell phone. When you get into the park, call us
- 30:45Speaker 1: back with the news of what's happening on the ground.
- 30:49Speaker 1: I'll tell you right now. I had no intention of
- 30:53Speaker 1: going to the park. I had no intention of leaving
- 30:56Speaker 1: the media center. But because I happened to be the
- 30:58Speaker 1: first one to walk out so I could a gawk
- 31:01Speaker 1: at what was happening in the park through the safety
- 31:04Speaker 1: of the windows of the media center, the editor had
- 31:07Speaker 1: to me a phone. I go downstairs. I'm at the park.
- 31:12Speaker 1: I'm walking by what happens to be my hotel, which
- 31:14Speaker 1: is right on the edge of the park, and I
- 31:16Speaker 1: see a guy and his knee is busted wide open,
- 31:20Speaker 1: and so like I he like, I sort of pull
- 31:24Speaker 1: him into the hotel lobby, and of course I'm gonna
- 31:28Speaker 1: interview him, but the cell phone at this point isn't working,
- 31:32Speaker 1: and I want to call back to the newsroom to
- 31:34Speaker 1: give an update to my editor, and so I have
- 31:37Speaker 1: to go use a payphone. And when I'm using the payphone,
- 31:40Speaker 1: I'm done with the call. I turn back around and
- 31:43Speaker 1: all of the media is surrounding this dude in an
- 31:46Speaker 1: informal press conference because I brought him back into the
- 31:51Speaker 1: lobby of the fucking media hotel. So I lost my
- 31:55Speaker 1: scoop and for the next decade, I see this guy's
- 31:58Speaker 1: face in the middle of the This is CNN promos
- 32:02Speaker 1: as like an action shot of him being interviewed after
- 32:05Speaker 1: the bombing and Centennial Park. That's my Olympic story today.
- 32:09Speaker 1: It's like Old Home Week. I got all the stories
- 32:12Speaker 1: from like the last twenty thirty years.
- 32:14Speaker 2: No, that's amazing story though, that's crazy.
- 32:18Speaker 1: But weightlifting is an amazing sport. To attend an event,
- 32:22Speaker 1: the intensity, the anxiety, the one moment these athletes have.
- 32:31Speaker 1: They're in the dark for four years, they get one
- 32:34Speaker 1: chance to do this. It is it raises your heart rate.
- 32:39Speaker 1: It is so gut wrenching to watch. Fucking love it.
- 32:43Speaker 1: Love the weightlifting stuff, it's so it's so good, so good,
- 32:48Speaker 1: as well as the swimming and the gymnastics and the trial.
- 32:51Speaker 2: Even the wrestling in the box and all of it.
- 32:53Speaker 2: I mean, it's just you ever get the chance to
- 32:56Speaker 2: go experience. I definitely believe go to the Olympics. You've
- 32:58Speaker 2: ever seen some random game, It's all awesome.
- 33:00Speaker 1: It's it's truly, it's it's it's magical. All right, let's
- 33:06Speaker 1: see we went through interesting, interesting, interesting, Which one if
- 33:15Speaker 1: your co host was a potato, how would he be prepared?
- 33:24Speaker 2: Oh? Man, this is about the good. This is too sexual.
- 33:26Speaker 2: I can't even think of anything as saying with that
- 33:28Speaker 2: doesn't sound weird because I was gonna say, I don't know,
- 33:31Speaker 2: it's stuff i'd stuff. Yeah, I don't know, I don't know.
- 33:35Speaker 2: I don't know how to answer this one chat.
- 33:37Speaker 1: I mean, you'd be our grotten. You know.
- 33:45Speaker 2: I like the Devil's lettuce, So I guess i'd be
- 33:47Speaker 2: a baked potato a.
- 33:48Speaker 1: Lot of flavor. I think it'd be fantastic. Okay, let's
- 33:55Speaker 1: see if we got time for one more. Oh, okay,
- 34:01Speaker 1: here's one. We had seth Rolins on the podcast. Yeah,
- 34:05Speaker 1: before WrestleMania. We had that in early April. Someone said
- 34:09Speaker 1: that was surprisingly fun. Thank you for the backhanded compliment,
- 34:12Speaker 1: even though he isn't a pro sports figure in the
- 34:14Speaker 1: classical definition. Who are some non sports figures we both
- 34:21Speaker 1: love to interview on the show Non sports figures we'd
- 34:27Speaker 1: love to interview on the show. This tough one.
- 34:30Speaker 2: It is easy for me if you know I love comedy.
- 34:34Speaker 2: It's you know, every day I'm like, how do I
- 34:37Speaker 2: get out of bed today?
- 34:38Speaker 1: Chat?
- 34:38Speaker 2: You know, I say to myself to watch some comedy.
- 34:40Speaker 2: That's what I'm getting up to go watch today. So
- 34:43Speaker 2: it's it's everything, Like anytime I'm down, I know a
- 34:46Speaker 2: lot of people like music that brings me other funk.
- 34:48Speaker 2: For me, it's comedy. So anytime Chad wants to have
- 34:51Speaker 2: a comedian on here, I would love it. But you know,
- 34:55Speaker 2: the comedians that do sports bet not many of them
- 34:58Speaker 2: talk about it. So the couple we do know about
- 35:01Speaker 2: were it would definitely try to get him on here eventually.
- 35:03Speaker 2: But yeah, you know, my number one if if he
- 35:07Speaker 2: still listens, Daniel Tosh, dude, come on here, We'll talk
- 35:10Speaker 2: Miami football whatever you want. I mean, me and Chad
- 35:13Speaker 2: will say two is the greatest quarterback ever. If that
- 35:15Speaker 2: gets you on here, just just any comedian that sports
- 35:19Speaker 2: bet I would love it because even talking about Ron's like,
- 35:22Speaker 2: you could see he was a really diehard Bears fan.
- 35:24Speaker 2: And that's what me and Chad like. We don't have
- 35:26Speaker 2: to talk to just football experts. We talked to fans.
- 35:29Speaker 2: It's just as fun, right, Like, at the end of
- 35:31Speaker 2: the day, that's all of us are. It doesn't matter
- 35:33Speaker 2: if you're the greatest expert in the world, you're gonna
- 35:35Speaker 2: be a fan the end of the day. So yeah,
- 35:38Speaker 2: I would go comedy for the next next person I
- 35:41Speaker 2: had one on.
- 35:43Speaker 1: I think Alfred Hitchcock would be really interesting.
- 35:47Speaker 2: Would can't go wrong with that one.
- 35:50Speaker 1: With that one, I wouldn't mind. Bono would be great.
- 35:56Speaker 1: I'd love to have Bono on the show.
- 35:58Speaker 2: No, you wouldn't you kidding, asshole? Isn't he fuck that?
- 36:04Speaker 1: I think he's so much more self aware now. I
- 36:08Speaker 1: think he jokes about sort of.
- 36:11Speaker 2: Putting all of his put his album on all of
- 36:13Speaker 2: our iPhones.
- 36:14Speaker 1: Like about his ego and his god complex, and I
- 36:17Speaker 1: think he totally I think he totally makes fun, uh,
- 36:22Speaker 1: makes fun of all that. But I like the idea
- 36:24Speaker 1: of I like the idea of Hitchcock because he's so
- 36:30Speaker 1: revolutionized a genre and would have the best freaking stories
- 36:35Speaker 1: to tell about Hollywood that like at a time where
- 36:40Speaker 1: I feel like everything went in a way that it
- 36:43Speaker 1: doesn't today, and like that was a Ryebald time. Oh yeah,
- 36:53Speaker 1: my wife would say comedy too. My wife's whenever my
- 36:57Speaker 1: wife is in a bad mood. Uh, she like, she
- 37:03Speaker 1: watches stand up comedy all the time. It's her favorite thing.
- 37:07Speaker 1: And but whenever she's in a bad mood, she watches
- 37:11Speaker 1: Justin Timberlake Andy Samberg Dick in the Box. I can't
- 37:17Speaker 1: tell you how many times I've walked in on her
- 37:20Speaker 1: watching that and just laughing, and it puts in her
- 37:23Speaker 1: much better.
- 37:23Speaker 2: Mon just made me think of I saw a great
- 37:25Speaker 2: before we go one last joke. I saw a roast
- 37:28Speaker 2: and Andy Samberg was there, and the comedian said, I
- 37:32Speaker 2: can't wait for Laura Michael's open casker funeral. So Andy
