- 0:00Deep within the shadows of our collective consciousness lies
- 0:04the eerie concept of demonic possession, a haunting notion
- 0:10that has lingered through the ages, weaving its tendrils into
- 0:15the tapestry of our faiths. The horrendous thought of being
- 0:20consumed, of succumbing to inscrutable forces that dwell
- 0:26beyond the veil of our comprehension.
- 0:30This idea seems to resonate within the darkest corners of
- 0:35the human mind and even within our very souls.
- 0:40Within this pitch black realm, A profound event unfolds involving
- 0:45a young woman, and what occurs would blur the delicate boundary
- 0:51between the world of the supernatural and the tangible,
- 0:56scaring the curious minds of those who experienced it,
- 1:01causing them to ponder if there certainly is a devil that lurks
- 1:06within the darkness. So join me as I explore the
- 1:11untold story of the terrifying exorcism of Martha Brozier,
- 1:17which took place in the 16th century and France
- 1:33the mid 1550s, a time fraught with prevalent superstitions and
- 1:40deep seated fears of witches and demons, creatures that hovered
- 1:45over mankind as menacing threats.
- 1:50A young woman named Martha Brozier, also known as Marta
- 1:55Brozier, emerged as a mysterious figure in an era characterized
- 2:02by the realms of black magic and the supernatural.
- 2:06Initially perceived as an unremarkable individual, she was
- 2:11merely seen as an eccentric girl, often keeping to herself,
- 2:16avoiding her neighbors, and preferring her own company.
- 2:20However, this unassuming, shy facade was shattered one rainy
- 2:26night. Martha, 20 years old at the
- 2:30time, and began to act exceptionally strange weeks
- 2:35prior to this night, drawing further and further into
- 2:39herself. She began to seem oppressed by
- 2:43something, something that she couldn't see, often being
- 2:48attacked or harassed at night. This night in particular,
- 2:53however, something very different took place.
- 2:57The petite woman, as lightning crashed and rain pelted the
- 3:02outside walls of her home, unleashed a bone chilling
- 3:07demonic howl. This alerted her parents who ran
- 3:12to see just what was happening. Upon opening the door to her
- 3:16room, they found their daughter perched in the corner of her
- 3:21room upon her night stand contorted, her limbs twisting in
- 3:27unnatural directions. She then again opened her mouth
- 3:32and screeched, her God awful screams being so loud that they
- 3:40even pierced the ears of nearby neighbors to the chaos of the
- 3:46storm. Little did the family realize
- 3:49that night that this event would reverberate throughout the
- 3:54tumultuous year of 1576. Word spread like wildfire, and
- 4:00with the heavily religious lives of most Europeans at that time,
- 4:05these rumored otherworldly screams soon sparked immediate
- 4:10suspicion. Suspicion that the young woman
- 4:14could have perhaps been involved in witchcraft.
- 4:18That the devil had made his way inside Martha Brogere.
- 4:24The out of the blue emergence of Martha's inexplicable behavior
- 4:28soon cast a sinister shadow over her neighbor, a woman named Anne
- 4:34Chevreaux. Suddenly, this calm and
- 4:38relatively charming woman found herself unjustly accused of
- 4:43bewitching Martha. Soon the accusations spiraled
- 4:48into a web of superstition, and this paranoia would ultimately
- 4:52lead to Anne's imprisonment. She would be charged with the
- 4:57crime of practicing sorcery, a grim fate sealed by the village
- 5:03folk, whose fear seemed to further taint the air with an
- 5:07aura of malevolence and terror. The bizarre behavior of Martha,
- 5:14which had begun to escalate that rainy night in her room just
- 5:18weeks before, had seemed to only get worse.
- 5:22Alongside screaming in dual octaves and contorting into
- 5:27abhorrent twisted positions, she began manifesting violent
- 5:32outbursts. She would try and attack anyone
- 5:36and everyone near her. Even while contorted, her teeth
- 5:41would gnash. Her voice emitted insults in a
- 5:46deep and guttural tone, as if several men were attempting to
- 5:51speak through her at once. Alongside this, blood curdling
- 5:56screams occasionally burst from her.
- 5:59She began to roll her eyes into the back of her skull.
- 6:02She would extend her tongue to inhuman lengths, often biting in
- 6:09and laughing. She would also begin to converse
- 6:13in unfamiliar languages she couldn't have possibly known.
- 6:17These included English and Greek alongside her native French.
- 6:24And even more disturbingly, she could speak these languages with
- 6:28her mouth closed, as if Martha was being used as a puppet.
- 6:34And alongside all of these unnatural symptoms, she also
- 6:40would boastfully move items without touching them.
- 6:43And when assaulting people or fighting restraints, she would
- 6:48show extraordinary strength, often taking multiple men to
- 6:53hold her down. And not without great struggle.
- 6:58As word spread about Martha, whispers of her alleged
- 7:01possession by demons or even the devil himself began to
- 7:07circulate. And in a surprising and
- 7:10extremely odd move, instead of recoiling in fear, her family
- 7:16embarked on a unique journey with Martha.
- 7:19They transformed her affliction into a macabre spectacle.
- 7:24They began travelling with her village to village to showcase
- 7:28the possessed woman they all kept hearing about and all of
- 7:34her grotesque glory. The alleged entity that
- 7:37inhabited Martha began to induce convulsions, terrifying roars,
- 7:44and a series of otherworldly displays that left spectators
- 7:48both mesmerized and petrified. The bizarre nature of her
- 7:53manifestations, including her ability to speak with a sealed
- 7:58mouth, extending her tongue to unnatural lengths, contorting
- 8:02her body in unimaginable ways, and exhibiting superhuman leaps
- 8:08even while lying down, defied logical explanation and
- 8:13solidified her reputation as a genuine supernatural enigma.
- 8:19This spectacle drew increasingly larger crowds, propelling Martha
- 8:24into celebrity status. King Henry the Fourth was not
- 8:29merely informed of these freakish displays and rumors,
- 8:33but rather he received a detailed account of Martha's
- 8:37manifestations and the growing whispers of alleged demonic
- 8:42possession that surrounded her. Intrigued by the escalating
- 8:46tales of the tormented girl, the king took decisive action and
- 8:50issued a royal decree for an exorcism.
- 8:54This decree set into motion a chain of events that led to
- 8:58Martha being escorted to the hallowed grounds of the Abbey of
- 9:04Saint Junisu, where a sense of anticipation and apprehension
- 9:09hung heavy in the air. It's important to note that I
- 9:13couldn't find information on any prior exorcisms, but rather her
- 9:18family seemed to be profiting off of her spiritual dilemma
- 9:22like a deformed creature at some kind of carnival or circus.
- 9:28Awaiting Martha's arrival at the Abbey was the eminent Bishop of
- 9:32Paris, a figure of authority and piety who stood ready to
- 9:37confront the story that had captured the attention of the
- 9:42entire Kingdom. Accompanying the Bishop was none
- 9:46other and the King's personal physician, Michelle Maryscott, a
- 9:52man whose skepticism towards the supernatural was well known.
- 9:57However, as Martha's case unfolded before him, Maryscott
- 10:02found himself embroiled in a unique experiment that would
- 10:06test the very boundaries of his beliefs and challenge the
- 10:11established notions. Demonic possession.
- 10:15For Maryscott, this extraordinary situation
- 10:18presented an unparalleled opportunity to delve into the
- 10:22realms of the unknown, a chance to scrutinize the phenomena of
- 10:26possession with a keen eye for scientific inquiry.
- 10:31This exorcism, unlike any before it, became a Crucible of
- 10:36investigation where each detail, each reaction in each utterance
- 10:43were meticulously observed and analyzed.
- 10:47As Martha stood on the precipice between the earthly and the
- 10:51ethereal, Mary Scott found himself at the forefront of a
- 10:56ground breaking study that would ignite debates and discussions
- 11:02for years to come. The results of this
- 11:05unprecedented exorcism were not merely contentious, they became
- 11:10a focal point of scholarly discourse and theological
- 11:14deliberation, shaping the very fabric of beliefs and
- 11:19superstitions that permeated society.
- 11:23The revelations that emerged from this bizarre event continue
- 11:27to echo through the halls of history, leaving a lingering
- 11:31mystery that defies easy explanation and challenges the
- 11:36perceptions of those who bore witness to Martha's ordeal.
- 11:42The physician, driven by his growing suspicions, meticulously
- 11:46orchestrated a covert plan to validate his doubts.
- 11:51With the utmost secrecy, he carried out a daring swap,
- 11:55exchanging the sacred relic, believed to be a piece of the
- 11:59True Cross, with a piece of mundane wood.
- 12:04The strategic maneuver aimed to unravel the tale surrounding
- 12:07Martha's eerie episodes and delve into the depths of her
- 12:12unsettling manifestations. Upon Martha's arrival at the
- 12:16solemn Abbey and the subsequent confrontation with the Bishop,
- 12:21the stage was set for a dramatic unfolding of events.
- 12:26As anticipated, with the presentation of holy objects,
- 12:31Martha's demeanor swiftly transformed.
- 12:34In the blink of an eye, she plunged into a tumultuous
- 12:38whirlwind of violence. Her rageful movements shook the
- 12:44very foundations of the Abbey. The contorted form of her body
- 12:50convulsed as she unleashed a torin of vile and profane
- 12:57utterances in multiple languages and in that horrible deep
- 13:02tonality, each syllable dripping with an ominous malevolence.
- 13:09The priests, taken aback by the chilling display before them,
- 13:13struggled to contain Martha, resorting to allegedly using a
- 13:18piece of the real True Cross to subdue her erratic behavior to
- 13:24essentially Dr. the demonic entities back to the point where
- 13:28she could be restrained. Yet after this occurred, the
- 13:32situation escalated once more to full blown intensity, objects
- 13:38hurling about as screams echoed once again.
- 13:44Amidst the chaos, the alleged peace of the True Cross was
- 13:48brought near Martha, and this triggered another visceral
- 13:52reaction, one that sent shivers throughout the witnesses.
- 13:57As the relic touched her, Martha recoiled in sheer terror, her
- 14:03face wincing in agony whilst being restrained and having the
- 14:09demon command it to leave her body.
- 14:12A powerful and final scream came from her lips.
- 14:17She then felt limp. Upon regaining consciousness,
- 14:22tears began streaming down Martha's face.
- 14:26She was seemingly freed from the evil that had taken her.
- 14:31Those who witnessed the events were forever scarred by what
- 14:34they had seen. It was if they had looked into
- 14:37the eyes of the devil himself. While the Bishop interpreted
- 14:43this harrowing scene as conclusive evidence of demonic
- 14:47possession, skepticism loomed the mind of the astute Mariska.
- 14:54His analytical gaze honed in on the discrepancy and the pieces
- 14:58of the cross that were presented to Martha and how she had
- 15:02reacted to the swapped items. She had, interestingly, seemed
- 15:07to have a much more profound reaction to the Decoy Cross than
- 15:12that of the True Cross. This perplexing disparity
- 15:16fuelled Maris Scott's doubts, prompting a deeper introspection
- 15:21into the complexities of the woman's affliction and the
- 15:25underlying forces at play. The intricate interplay of
- 15:29faith, skepticism, and the supernatural unfolded within the
- 15:35hollowed walls of the Abbey, setting the stage for a riveting
- 15:40clash of beliefs and interpretations.
- 15:44As the veil of uncertainty shrouded Martha's condition, the
- 15:49physician's clandestine experiment sparked A contentious
- 15:52debate that reverberated through the corridors of power and
- 15:57piety. Amidst the lingering cries of
- 16:00doubt and conviction, the true nature of Martha's plight
- 16:06remained veiled in mystery, awaiting further revelation as
- 16:11to what indeed had taken place. That night, Mary Scott informed
- 16:15the Bishop and other priests about his actions, stating that
- 16:20Martha's condition might be due to severe mental distress rather
- 16:25than possession. He considered this as evidence
- 16:29that there was no demonic influence involved.
- 16:33Despite Mary Scott's belief, the Bishop adamantly maintained that
- 16:37Martha was under demonic possession, going to the extent
- 16:42of accusing the physician of blasphemy for suggesting
- 16:46otherwise, another horrible charge that carried heavy
- 16:50consequences for that time. The debate raged on and
- 16:54consequently, although Mary Scott held strong suspicions
- 16:59that Martha's affliction was either a charade or a result of
- 17:03mental instability, he struggled to sway the Church's opinion.
- 17:08Thus, the experiment at this juncture faced a set back in
- 17:13achieving its intended outcome. Despite the outcome, Mary Scott
- 17:19in the coming months would find unexpected allies and his
- 17:22beliefs within the Church. Unbeknownst to him, the
- 17:27Archbishop of Lyon, Charles Meron, shared Mary Scott's
- 17:32conviction and chose to push the boundaries of the experiment
- 17:35further devised an elaborate plan to test his suspicions by
- 17:41concealing a key in red silk and presenting it to Martha as a
- 17:45fragment of the True Cross. Additionally, he proposed
- 17:50swapping holy water with regular water to observe her reactions.
- 17:56Adding to the intrigue, he recited passages from Virgil's
- 18:00Anaid and Latin, intended to be nonsensical to a demon but
- 18:05potentially misconstrued as potent scripture by an ordinary
- 18:10individual. In essence, the entire exorcism
- 18:15would be a meticulously orchestrated charade.
- 18:19Martha stood before the Archbishop, her body wracked by
- 18:24spasmatic convulsions that seemed to ripple through her
- 18:28being like violent tremors. As she stood in his presence, a
- 18:33sense of foreboding hung heavy in the air, shrouding the room
- 18:38in silence. Unbeknownst to Martha, the small
- 18:43vial of holy water was discreetly offered to her
- 18:46trembling hand, it's sanctified essence shimmering faintly in
- 18:51the dim light of the chamber. With a trembling grasp, she
- 18:56ingested the holy water, her movements almost mechanical and
- 19:01their desperation for solace. However, the fateful moment
- 19:06arrived when a seemingly identical vial of water,
- 19:10carefully disguised as holy water, was presented to Martha.
- 19:15As the liquid touched her lips, a Primal Scream tore through the
- 19:19stillness of the room, reverberating with a raw agony
- 19:25that seemed to sear her very soul.
- 19:29The Archbishop, his gaze now piercing and unwavering,
- 19:34observed these events, his mind a maelstrom of conflicting
- 19:39thoughts and conjecture. Why did the ordinary water evoke
- 19:43such visceral distress, while the holy water remained
- 19:48untouched by the flames of her torment?
- 19:53What sinister forces lurked beneath the surface of Martha?
- 19:56Did they weave a web of fear and uncertainty?
- 20:00Around her very being, moreover, the moment of truth arrived as a
- 20:07relic resembling a fragment of the revered True Cross was
- 20:11presented to Martha. The mere side of this sacred
- 20:15object triggered a reaction so intense that it laid bare the
- 20:20depths of her inner turmoil with a stark clarity that sent terror
- 20:25through the hearts of those present.
- 20:28From here, the verses were read. Martha's reaction mirrored her
- 20:33encounter with the deceptive waters, blurring the lines
- 20:37between the sacred and the profane in a dance of
- 20:42otherworldly revelation. In the wake of these
- 20:45unexplainable events, Archbishop Miron found himself standing at
- 20:51the crossroads of disbelief and conviction.
- 20:55Is resolve tested by the inexplicable nature of Martha's
- 20:59responses? The intricate puzzle of her
- 21:02reactions to seemingly mundane stimuli raised questions that
- 21:08transcended the boundaries of the natural world, hinting at a
- 21:12presence that defied conventional explanation.
- 21:16As the Archbishop delved deeper into the labyrinth of Martha's
- 21:20eerie manifestations, a cold realization began to dawn upon
- 21:24him. The revelations, unearthed in
- 21:27the Crucible of faith and skepticism marked a watershed
- 21:31moment where the veil of alleged demonic possession was lifted to
- 21:36reveal a complex framework of human frailty or deception.
- 21:43The implications of this groundbreaking revelation
- 21:46resonated far beyond the confines of the Abbey,
- 21:50challenging the very fabric of beliefs that had held sway over
- 21:54the minds of the faithful for centuries.
- 21:59Despite the apparent conclusion and the suggestion that Martha
- 22:03Brogier might have been a mere fraud, a charlatan, or possibly
- 22:09not completely sound of mind, her case still continued to stir
- 22:14controversy. Numerous witnesses attested to
- 22:18witnessing her bizarre episodes first hand, insisting that her
- 22:22actions surpassed human capabilities, making it
- 22:27implausible for her to fabricate everything.
- 22:30Rozier herself maintained her assertion of being possessed and
- 22:35would ultimately persist in her tours and tell her death.
- 22:40Now before we go, the twists and turns of this case have churned
- 22:45up many questions. It's my conviction that this
- 22:49particular case could have influenced the Catholic Church
- 22:52all the way to the modern day, because nowadays a person must
- 22:56be examined by a doctor as well as a psychologist before an
- 23:00exorcism can even be considered. Could Martha's case have caused
- 23:05this? All around pretty interesting in
- 23:08my opinion. If the young woman was
- 23:11possessed, just how did this occur?
- 23:15Was she cursed, bewitched by someone else?
- 23:19Or was she herself dabbling with the dark arts?
- 23:23Despite her anguish and apparent pain, her family took her around
- 23:27like a travelling circus act and no doubt profited from the
- 23:31spectacle. This to me is obscene.
- 23:34If she indeed was under demonic influence, to think that her own
- 23:39flesh and blood could be so exploitative, it's just
- 23:43heartbreaking. Unless she was in on it after
- 23:48word got out and she was properly exercised on the King's
- 23:51orders, just how or why would she show aversion to non holy
- 23:57relics such as the piece of wood resembling the True Cross or the
- 24:02non blessed water? And lastly, if she was seemingly
- 24:06freed during this event, why did she then return to touring as
- 24:11the possessed woman after the debacle?
- 24:14To me, this makes me question whether she was a charlatan or a
- 24:18fake, or perhaps someone who was very mentally disturbed or sick
- 24:24with some kind of illness that was unknown to physicians at the
- 24:27time, or if she was truly possessed in possession.
- 24:32Like most paranormal things we could never fully grasp the
- 24:38truth is up to you to decide. Was the devil in the darkness or
- 24:43was he unmasked to reveal a very clever woman just trying to make
- 24:48a living through strange means? Thank you guys so much for
