Latest / Clydesdale Media Podcast / Scott Switzer's Stream of Consciousness - New Show of just random thoughts on Random Things
Transcript
- 0:15That's how it went
- 0:35what's going on everybody
- 0:37welcome to a brand new show
- 0:40this is scott schweitzer's
- 0:42stream of consciousness um
- 0:45what that means I don't
- 0:47know kind of like uh
- 0:49letting you inside my head
- 0:52So what I wanted to do is
- 0:53kind of create a show where
- 0:55I could just kind of come
- 0:56on here by myself and chat
- 1:00about what's going on inside my head,
- 1:03what thoughts I have
- 1:04throughout the week of
- 1:07things that have popped up
- 1:09And not necessarily just in
- 1:10the CrossFit space,
- 1:11but that will be part of it.
- 1:13But also like in pop culture, in the news,
- 1:18in sports, in music,
- 1:22all different kinds of stuff.
- 1:23And I think you'll get kind
- 1:24of a little vibe as to what
- 1:28I mean by that in today's show.
- 1:30It's going to be a little eclectic,
- 1:32a little mix.
- 1:34Um, but we'll, we'll jump into it,
- 1:36see how you like it.
- 1:37And if you like it, we'll keep doing it.
- 1:40But really this is a vehicle
- 1:41for me to be able to hop on
- 1:43whenever I need to just by
- 1:45myself to be able to talk
- 1:47about things I'm seeing
- 1:48going on in the space, outside space,
- 1:51whatever.
- 1:53Um, but really just, just me,
- 1:56a chance to talk to you,
- 1:57the audience and you to
- 1:58talk to me and just go
- 2:01through whatever is, is happening.
- 2:03So the first thing I want to
- 2:04talk about is if you didn't
- 2:05see my interview this
- 2:06afternoon with Matt
- 2:07Schegeldecker and Kristen Slaper,
- 2:11they are a part of the nine
- 2:12eleven climb team.
- 2:15It started here in Ohio.
- 2:16It is now being spread more
- 2:19widely because they've
- 2:20partnered with Broken Science.
- 2:23But it's to honor and
- 2:24celebrate the first
- 2:26responders and the four
- 2:28hundred and fifty one first
- 2:30responders who died at nine
- 2:31eleven to honor them and
- 2:33celebrate those first
- 2:34responders who are
- 2:36continuing to do those jobs.
- 2:40But make it aware that
- 2:42physical and mental.
- 2:44health is important to them.
- 2:46And so they have a workout, uh,
- 2:49the CrossFit workout you
- 2:50can do on Wednesday.
- 2:52Um, but essentially what it is,
- 2:54is do anything that helps
- 2:56you move for forty one
- 2:59minutes and twenty seconds.
- 3:01That's it.
- 3:03Um, now they, they got mayhem and rich to,
- 3:06to come up with a workout.
- 3:07Uh, it, it has some steps.
- 3:09It
- 3:13Yeah, and Seema Boobs says,
- 3:17the guy who has state-funded parolees.
- 3:19That is correct.
- 3:20This is another initiative he has.
- 3:22Because of his connections
- 3:24with that program,
- 3:25he is starting this to
- 3:28bring awareness to mental
- 3:30and physical health issues
- 3:32with first responders.
- 3:34So that's happening this week.
- 3:38And it's a short like thirty
- 3:39minute interview we did
- 3:41with him and Kristen earlier today.
- 3:44If you want to go check that
- 3:45out and the workout is
- 3:47brought up during that
- 3:48interview if you want to
- 3:49check out what that is as well.
- 3:52The other thing I'm working
- 3:52on this week is the behind
- 3:53the scenes of the Masters CrossFit Games.
- 3:56Episode one will be out Monday morning,
- 3:59probably eight or nine a.m.
- 4:02I'm thinking it is pretty much finished.
- 4:05Just have to add in two
- 4:07voiceovers and it will be
- 4:08done and then I'll upload
- 4:11it and get it ready to launch.
- 4:13First thing Monday morning,
- 4:14episode one is check in day.
- 4:17Um,
- 4:17so it's basically just Ellie Hiller and
- 4:19myself walking through check-in day,
- 4:21talking to the athletes,
- 4:23finding out what's going on with them.
- 4:24Uh, so that will be episode one.
- 4:27And then next week will be episode two,
- 4:30which is event one, the deadlift run and,
- 4:33uh, the behind the scenes of what, uh,
- 4:35what was happening there and that.
- 4:38And Jonathan Ortega killed
- 4:39it with his videography and editing.
- 4:43I have to also shout out Caitlin Walters,
- 4:45who was a videographer for
- 4:46me at the Masters CrossFit
- 4:48Games and Holly Dugan,
- 4:50our stats and info person,
- 4:51who is always killing it.
- 4:54Ellie Hiller was amazing.
- 4:56She was running everywhere,
- 4:57getting interviews.
- 4:58It's going to be something special.
- 4:59I hope you guys check it out.
- 5:03Because the Masters athletes
- 5:05definitely have some pretty cool stories.
- 5:08So now let's get into the
- 5:09meat of what this program is going to be.
- 5:12And I'm going to start with
- 5:14the events of this week
- 5:16that are related to the
- 5:17death of Lazar Jukic.
- 5:20And it starts with Luca
- 5:23making a statement this
- 5:24week on Instagram.
- 5:26And for those of you who did not see that,
- 5:29I'm going to pull it up.
- 5:30I want to focus on two main
- 5:32issues with this.
- 5:38So, um,
- 5:39Luca put out a statement basically
- 5:42saying that a timeline of
- 5:44events that happened and
- 5:45the conversation that
- 5:46happened with him and Dave
- 5:48Castro with Nicole Carol in the room.
- 5:50Um, I'm sure you've heard about it, uh,
- 5:54repeatedly this week,
- 5:55but I wanted to give a
- 5:56little bit of input.
- 5:57And this is later in the statement.
- 5:59And he says here,
- 6:01while I won't point fingers
- 6:03on this post or try to ruin anyone's name,
- 6:06I feel obligated with my
- 6:07family to do everything
- 6:08that is legally in my power
- 6:09to ask questions,
- 6:10go deeper into this case
- 6:12and try to see whose fault
- 6:14is that there was no
- 6:16reaction from the
- 6:17multimillion dollar
- 6:17organization whose most of
- 6:19the staff's job is to make
- 6:21this one word weekend perfect.
- 6:25He also goes on to say that, um,
- 6:30even if I did want to go
- 6:31deeper in this conversation,
- 6:32I wouldn't because what's,
- 6:34what's it doing other than
- 6:36just taking attention away
- 6:37from where it should be.
- 6:39And that is,
- 6:40how could this happen on
- 6:41competition of this size?
- 6:42How could this happen on a live stream?
- 6:44And to someone who was very
- 6:45easy to keep track of as he
- 6:48was one of the few people in the lead.
- 6:51So,
- 6:54while Luke is mad and I completely,
- 6:56completely understand that
- 6:57if anybody has a right to be pissed off,
- 7:00it is Luka Jukic.
- 7:01He lost his brother.
- 7:03I lost my father just a few years ago.
- 7:05I know what that feeling is
- 7:07like losing a family member
- 7:09so close to you is devastating and it,
- 7:12and it puts you in weird head spaces.
- 7:15And, um,
- 7:17if anybody deserves to go out on
- 7:18the internet and say what
- 7:19they feel and say, uh,
- 7:23that they're upset.
- 7:24It is Luka Jukic.
- 7:25He has every right to do that.
- 7:28The reaction to this has
- 7:30been startling to me, though.
- 7:33It seems like an angry mob
- 7:34immediately took the words
- 7:36of Luka Jukic and made
- 7:40steps toward whose fault it was,
- 7:43who's to blame,
- 7:44whose head needs to be on a platter.
- 7:46And in Luka's own words, he says,
- 7:49I'm not ready to point
- 7:50fingers at this point.
- 7:52I'm ready to ask more questions.
- 7:54I'm ready to dig deeper.
- 7:55Yet, the entire internet, it seems,
- 7:58has become this angry mob
- 8:01ready to go after whoever it is.
- 8:05The other thing I think
- 8:06that's getting lost in all
- 8:07of this is we lost a really
- 8:10great guy in Lazar Jukic.
- 8:14And that's getting lost with
- 8:17everybody's agendas around
- 8:20what has happened.
- 8:21the PFAA going in this direction.
- 8:24And none of it has to do
- 8:26with that event or the
- 8:28safety of that event,
- 8:29but what they've wanted to
- 8:30accomplish for years and
- 8:32what they're blaming CrossFit of doing.
- 8:36And it's putting Lazar out
- 8:38of the story completely, which is wrong,
- 8:44completely wrong.
- 8:45And the reaction to this has been,
- 8:50Luca's reaction was measured
- 8:53for a guy that should be pissed off.
- 8:56Yet the internet's reaction
- 8:58to this is not measured and
- 9:00has become an angry mob.
- 9:02And it seems that the more
- 9:04people that are posting
- 9:06these angry statements about people,
- 9:08about organizations,
- 9:10the more people are jumping
- 9:12on that bandwagon and going forward.
- 9:17I find that ridiculous in this case.
- 9:23So the story moves on with
- 9:26an apology from Dave Castro
- 9:28later that day.
- 9:30I will go ahead and share
- 9:31that screen as well.
- 9:36Um, Dave Castro said,
- 9:37I read Lucas post this
- 9:39morning and would like to
- 9:40apologize to him and the
- 9:42entire Jukic family.
- 9:44I should never have said
- 9:45that the decision to
- 9:46continue the CrossFit games
- 9:47in August was blessed by their family.
- 9:50At the time,
- 9:51the decision was made to
- 9:52continue the games and
- 9:54allow our athletes to compete.
- 9:56and we respected those
- 9:57athletes who decided to withdraw.
- 9:59This decision was made by CrossFit,
- 10:01and I never intended to put
- 10:02the weight of this decision on Luca,
- 10:05the Jukic family,
- 10:06or our CrossFit athletes.
- 10:08I've never been in a
- 10:09situation like this before,
- 10:10and I absolutely made a mistake.
- 10:12I sincerely regret any pain
- 10:14that I've caused.
- 10:18So we have a response from
- 10:19Dave Castro saying that the
- 10:21words he used were wrong.
- 10:25The words that people have
- 10:26been attacking him for using,
- 10:28saying it was blessed by
- 10:30both the athletes and
- 10:31blessed by the Jukic family.
- 10:34He says he made a mistake,
- 10:36he says he was wrong,
- 10:37and he apologized for that.
- 10:43Then, almost...
- 10:45A few hours later,
- 10:47we then get another news
- 10:51story from the barbell spin
- 10:53reporting that an email was
- 10:55sent to athletes from Dawnfall.
- 11:01And here is that you can
- 11:02read the entire email on
- 11:05the barbell spin.
- 11:07And it says, hello,
- 11:08I'm writing to share a few
- 11:09important updates.
- 11:11He basically talks about the
- 11:12third party investigation
- 11:14and that that is still ongoing.
- 11:16Um,
- 11:17he wanted everybody to know that if
- 11:20you're president at present
- 11:22at the games and despite desire,
- 11:25desire to speak with an
- 11:26investigator about the swim
- 11:28and individual event one to do so,
- 11:30we will be following up
- 11:31directly with instructions
- 11:32on how to reach the investigator.
- 11:35So he's telling anybody who
- 11:37wants to speak out about
- 11:39what happened at the event
- 11:40that they will put them in
- 11:41touch with the investigator
- 11:44or the way to get in touch
- 11:45with the investigator.
- 11:48He also then goes into a
- 11:49community dialogue.
- 11:51Separate and apart from the investigation,
- 11:53we've heard many people in
- 11:54our community across a
- 11:55range of topics related to
- 11:57CrossFit as a sport.
- 11:58Over the past three weeks,
- 11:59I personally met with many
- 12:00of our athletes and other
- 12:02members of the community.
- 12:03These conversations have
- 12:04helped me better understand
- 12:06issues that are top of mind
- 12:08and different points of view that exist.
- 12:11And he says he will continue
- 12:12to do that over the coming weeks.
- 12:15He finishes with mental
- 12:17health and trauma support
- 12:18will be available.
- 12:20As promised,
- 12:20we also wanted to share
- 12:21details regarding mental
- 12:23health and trauma support
- 12:24to those who attended the
- 12:25twenty twenty four CrossFit
- 12:27Games and were affected by
- 12:28the death of Lazar Jukic.
- 12:31This resource will be
- 12:32serviced through Lira Health,
- 12:34which offers several
- 12:34confidential support options,
- 12:36including therapy,
- 12:37coaching and unlimited
- 12:38access to self-care apps.
- 12:41If you're on site in Fort Worth,
- 12:44CrossFit is offering access
- 12:46to eight free coaching or
- 12:47therapy sessions within a
- 12:49six-month period starting today.
- 12:52And I can verify that I,
- 12:54as an attendee of the CrossFit Games,
- 12:57got an email stating this
- 12:58exact same thing.
- 13:00So that also did happen.
- 13:05So with all this...
- 13:07I've been very reserved
- 13:08about talking about this
- 13:10and how things should go
- 13:12until the investigation was complete.
- 13:15Um,
- 13:15and the full medical examiner report is
- 13:17back.
- 13:18I know Luca talks about a
- 13:20conversation he had with
- 13:21the medical medical examiner,
- 13:24but I would like to see the
- 13:24full report and,
- 13:26and everything that happened.
- 13:27But regardless of that, a man died,
- 13:30a man should not have died.
- 13:33Um,
- 13:35But the reality is this happens in sport.
- 13:40There is an assumption of
- 13:41risk every time an athlete
- 13:42takes the floor, the field, the track,
- 13:47the pool, whatever it is,
- 13:48there is an assumption of risk.
- 13:51That doesn't mean that you
- 13:52burned down the building
- 13:53because somebody messed up.
- 13:56What it means is you learn
- 13:58from your mistakes,
- 13:59you get better at what you did,
- 14:02and you try to move on.
- 14:05There have been deaths in
- 14:06sport all across the world.
- 14:10And in every case,
- 14:12the organization that runs
- 14:13the sport learns from that, what happened,
- 14:16gets better at what happened,
- 14:18and then moves on from that.
- 14:22Hopefully in a much better place.
- 14:24One large example is the NFL
- 14:26has been sued and lost a
- 14:29billions of dollars in
- 14:30concussion lawsuits.
- 14:34They've introduced eight new
- 14:36football helmets this year
- 14:37alone that are helping
- 14:39minimize concussions and
- 14:41the effects of CTE.
- 14:44This is something that they
- 14:45were forced into doing
- 14:47because of things that were happening,
- 14:49and a lawsuit was filed, they lost,
- 14:51and now that they are
- 14:52making things better.
- 14:55My hope is that CrossFit
- 14:57takes what happened,
- 14:59learns from that experience, gets better,
- 15:02and moves forward.
- 15:03Because the one thing that
- 15:04nobody is saying is,
- 15:06but I've talked to several athletes,
- 15:09there is no safer place to
- 15:10compete than the CrossFit Games.
- 15:13Did they mess up in this case?
- 15:15Sure they did.
- 15:17Something went wrong.
- 15:19But you talk to athletes who
- 15:21have been around the sport a long time,
- 15:24The rig setups are better
- 15:25than Waterpalooza.
- 15:26They're better than local comps.
- 15:29They're better than Dubai.
- 15:33Everything at the games is
- 15:35done at such a high level
- 15:36that it is truly the safest
- 15:38place athletes have felt when competing.
- 15:44And that's not my words.
- 15:46That's from other athletes
- 15:48I've spoken to who have said,
- 15:50when CrossFit is running the event,
- 15:52it just feels safer.
- 15:54Everything is done at a higher level.
- 15:57They messed up.
- 15:58They made a mistake.
- 15:59And they need to rectify
- 16:01that mistake and do better.
- 16:06But the truth of the matter is,
- 16:10I look at events that are
- 16:11going on even this weekend and think,
- 16:13oh my gosh.
- 16:16What are they thinking?
- 16:20I'm not going to call any names out,
- 16:22but I've heard things going
- 16:23on this weekend that were
- 16:25just shocking to me that
- 16:27would be allowed at a
- 16:28competition that would
- 16:29never happen at the CrossFit Games.
- 16:33Now, NorCal Classic,
- 16:35if you saw Hiller's Instagram,
- 16:37they have had enough people
- 16:38in the water to make sure
- 16:40that nothing like what
- 16:42happened in Fort Worth
- 16:43happens at the NorCal Classic.
- 16:46There are lifeguards everywhere.
- 16:49There are emergency
- 16:52personnel right on the shore,
- 16:55ready to act if needed.
- 17:02End of the story is, yes,
- 17:05CrossFit messed up.
- 17:06Yes, they need to fix it.
- 17:08It's not time to point fingers.
- 17:10It's not time to divide as a community.
- 17:12It's time to come together
- 17:14and give us a sport that is
- 17:18even safer than it was
- 17:19before and doesn't allow
- 17:21something like happened
- 17:22this year happen again.
- 17:26But dividing as a community
- 17:27is not the way to do it.
- 17:30We need to find a way to come together.
- 17:32And whatever that is,
- 17:33I don't know what the
- 17:34answer is off the top of my head,
- 17:36but we've got to find a way.
- 17:37Because right now,
- 17:38the community itself is split in half,
- 17:41and that's not going to solve anything.
- 17:45And we can't just hate on people to hate.
- 17:47We need to find out a solution,
- 17:50figure out how to do better, and move on.
- 17:55So that's what I have to say
- 17:56about that from that perspective.
- 18:00And now I'm going to dive
- 18:00into some other topics that
- 18:04are less CrossFit related.
- 18:07So the next thing I'm going
- 18:09to jump into is the Hope
- 18:11Solo documentary on Netflix.
- 18:13If you have not seen this,
- 18:15Hope Solo was a goalie for the U.S.
- 18:17women's national team.
- 18:19It is considered by some to
- 18:21be the greatest goalie in soccer history,
- 18:24not just women's soccer,
- 18:26but overall in soccer.
- 18:29There's a documentary on
- 18:30Netflix called Hope Solo
- 18:31versus USA Soccer,
- 18:33and it is part of their Untold series.
- 18:37I know that when documentaries get done,
- 18:40depending on the
- 18:41perspective of the subject
- 18:43and the director and the producer,
- 18:45that it can go in any direction.
- 18:48But the way this woman was
- 18:49treated in the late two
- 18:51thousands to late teens in
- 18:54this country was crazy.
- 18:58She was known for being very outspoken.
- 19:01And she spoke up when she
- 19:03didn't think things were correct.
- 19:06And for that, she got benched.
- 19:08She got suspended.
- 19:11And in most cases, in all cases,
- 19:14I would say,
- 19:15the things she said would not
- 19:17even be blinked at if it
- 19:18was said by a man.
- 19:20And yet, she gets the boot all the time.
- 19:24She gets suspended.
- 19:27And she was the first female
- 19:29soccer player to question their contract.
- 19:31and to question the
- 19:35the equity between men's and
- 19:36women's soccer in the U.S.
- 19:38And you have to remember
- 19:39from nineteen ninety nine
- 19:41to the mid two thousand
- 19:45fifteen two thousand teens,
- 19:48women's soccer was
- 19:49outdrawing men's soccer by a lot.
- 19:54And the women's team,
- 19:56their percentage of what
- 19:58the men got was probably.
- 20:02Ten percent, ten, fifteen percent, maybe.
- 20:14James W. says,
- 20:15I think we're conflating issues,
- 20:16backing up a touch.
- 20:18Who is to blame for the
- 20:19issues that led to Lazar's death?
- 20:20And Dave's handling of the
- 20:21events after the death are
- 20:23very different.
- 20:24Dave lied to the athletes
- 20:25and everyone after.
- 20:29I think that that's semantics,
- 20:31but I'm sure that there are
- 20:35going to be a lot of people
- 20:36that agree with you, James,
- 20:38and think that it was an outright lie.
- 20:43I think using the word
- 20:44blessing was a mistake.
- 20:47He should not have said that.
- 20:51I'm not sure I can go all the way to lie,
- 20:53but I do understand where
- 20:53you're coming from.
- 20:59So anyway, Hope Solo...
- 21:02pays dearly for a lot of
- 21:03things and is really the
- 21:05first female athlete to
- 21:07question the equal pay for
- 21:10men and women in soccer in
- 21:12a sport where the women
- 21:14were outdrawing the men and
- 21:16actually probably bringing
- 21:17in more money than the men.
- 21:20And she pays very dearly for that.
- 21:22And if you have time,
- 21:23it's a great documentary to
- 21:25kind of check out.
- 21:26The reason I bring it up
- 21:27here is it is very eerily
- 21:30familiar to the Danielle
- 21:33Brandon documentary.
- 21:35They both came up...
- 21:37with very weird,
- 21:39questionable backgrounds
- 21:42that I found eerily familiar.
- 21:46And they both succeeded in spite of that,
- 21:50both with four point oh GPAs,
- 21:52both becoming successes in
- 21:55the sport that they loved
- 21:56and getting college
- 21:57scholarships to be able to
- 21:59get a chance to get out of that.
- 22:11Sorry,
- 22:12allergies are really bad today here
- 22:13in Columbus.
- 22:15So the next topic I'm going
- 22:16to talk about is football
- 22:18season beginning.
- 22:19I'm a huge, huge football fan.
- 22:22I could not be more excited
- 22:24that football is back.
- 22:26I'm a bigger NFL fan than a college fan,
- 22:28but I am a Penn State fan.
- 22:31Today was Penn State looked
- 22:33like trash on defense,
- 22:35but their offense kept them in it,
- 22:37and they were able to pull
- 22:38out a win against Bowling Green.
- 22:40But I am a much bigger NFL fan.
- 22:44And the NFL has kicked off
- 22:45with two great games with
- 22:48the Chiefs and Ravens on Thursday night,
- 22:50the Eagles and Packers last night,
- 22:52the Chiefs-Ravens game
- 22:54coming down to a toe.
- 22:57on the back of the end zone
- 22:59at the end of their game,
- 23:00and the Ravens just missing
- 23:02that touchdown to possibly
- 23:03tie or go ahead.
- 23:05And the Eagles-Packers game
- 23:07almost came down to the end
- 23:08and a very bad injury that
- 23:10seems to be not so bad if
- 23:12reports are correct that
- 23:13I'm getting right now.
- 23:16Um,
- 23:16on Jordan love that he's going to be
- 23:18out three to four weeks
- 23:20with an MCL sprain.
- 23:21It looked like it could have
- 23:22been much worse than that.
- 23:24Uh, but that's, uh,
- 23:26that should be pretty
- 23:26optimistic for Packers fans,
- 23:29but I'm a bears fan.
- 23:30And so I hate the Packers.
- 23:31I was rooting against him last night.
- 23:34Uh,
- 23:34I'm super excited for this season
- 23:35because Chicago may have a
- 23:37quarter quarterback for the
- 23:38first time ever, uh,
- 23:40And I had a question in my
- 23:42head that I wanted to pose
- 23:44to the audience,
- 23:45and I'm curious what you think.
- 23:47Do you ever, in any sport,
- 23:50and your team is playing a rival,
- 23:52do you ever root for the
- 23:54other team to sustain an
- 23:56injury that will help you win games?
- 24:01Because last night as I'm
- 24:02watching the Eagles-Packers,
- 24:04I'm rooting mightily against the Packers.
- 24:08As a Bears fan, I hate the Packers.
- 24:10And at the very end of the game,
- 24:12Jordan Love suffers an injury.
- 24:14And as much as I hate the Packers,
- 24:18I hate seeing people get injured.
- 24:20I think it is...
- 24:26I don't know.
- 24:27I think it just crosses a
- 24:28line to root for that.
- 24:29But I was curious to find
- 24:30out if anybody else felt the same way,
- 24:34or do you root for injury
- 24:36to occur to your team that
- 24:39helps you win games?
- 24:43And just for shits and giggles,
- 24:45I'm going to make my Super
- 24:46Bowl pick and tell you that
- 24:48the forty niners and Ravens
- 24:50will play in this year's
- 24:51Super Bowl with the forty
- 24:52niners winning the game.
- 24:55And I don't like either one of those teams,
- 24:57but I just think that this
- 24:58is their year to do something there.
- 25:02I'm going to finish up with
- 25:04a little music thing and maybe, well,
- 25:09two more things.
- 25:11Music thing.
- 25:15If you've been in a CrossFit gym,
- 25:16you have heard the music of Linkin Park,
- 25:18I am sure.
- 25:20Linkin Park was a heavy
- 25:24rotation on my gym's
- 25:26playlist when we were
- 25:29really getting at it.
- 25:32Uh, Holly, I knew I liked you,
- 25:34Holly Dugan better to win
- 25:35against healthy teams the right way.
- 25:39Sure.
- 25:40I will go with that.
- 25:42And it means more when you get the win.
- 25:45Uh,
- 25:46so Lincoln park has announced that they
- 25:48are coming back with a new
- 25:51co-vocalist named Emily Armstrong.
- 25:54Uh,
- 25:54and they announced a world tour and an
- 25:56upcoming album to come out this fall.
- 26:01So my question is,
- 26:04because I'm a huge Linkin Park fan,
- 26:06I have a couple of their albums on vinyl.
- 26:08They played in our gym all the time.
- 26:10I still listen to them.
- 26:12I still crank it up when
- 26:13they come on the radio.
- 26:15If a band replaces a lead singer,
- 26:17is it really still the band?
- 26:21So if you don't know,
- 26:22Chester Bennington was the
- 26:23lead singer of Linkin Park.
- 26:26He died a few years ago.
- 26:28The band has not played since.
- 26:30They're now coming back with
- 26:31this new singer, Emily Armstrong.
- 26:38Should it still be Linkin Park?
- 26:41is my question.
- 26:44I can personally only think
- 26:45of two bands who have
- 26:46replaced lead singers and
- 26:48had success after,
- 26:50and that is Van Halen and Black Sabbath.
- 26:54Van Halen had David Lee Roth
- 26:56and Sammy Hagar.
- 26:58Black Sabbath had Ozzy
- 26:59Osbourne and Ronnie James Dio.
- 27:03But in both cases,
- 27:05many of the fandom believe
- 27:08that it was still kind of
- 27:09two separate bands.
- 27:11Like there is the Hagar era
- 27:14and the Roth era for Van Halen.
- 27:16There is the Ozzy and the
- 27:18Dio versions of Black Sabbath.
- 27:20And they're very different.
- 27:22And you can like both,
- 27:24but they were very
- 27:25different bands as... Andrew Sten,
- 27:27thank you.
- 27:28ACDC as well.
- 27:30acdc probably the most
- 27:32successful without people
- 27:35saying the bond scott era
- 27:38or the brian johnson era
- 27:40acdc did it probably the
- 27:42best of all of them now
- 27:44that you bring that up
- 27:48holly said it could work
- 27:50but it'll never be the same
- 27:51and they can't try to be
- 27:54So if you go out on the internet,
- 27:55you can see they did a, um,
- 27:57a live stream where they
- 27:58played a couple songs,
- 28:00one new song and a couple
- 28:02of the old songs,
- 28:03I believe numb and another
- 28:06song where she sang.
- 28:09Um, it's definitely not Chester.
- 28:11It's definitely not.
- 28:13Um,
- 28:14It wasn't bad, but it's different.
- 28:18And I'm just not sure.
- 28:21I'm not sure how I feel.
- 28:23But gosh,
- 28:24Andrew Sten just really put a big
- 28:25wrinkle in this with ACDC
- 28:27because they really made it work.
- 28:30ACDC never missed a beat.
- 28:33And I would say the same
- 28:34fans stayed with ACDC through both.
- 28:41Andrew says,
- 28:41I think it depends on how many
- 28:42original people are in the band.
- 28:44Some bands try to continue
- 28:45when less than half of the
- 28:47band are original.
- 28:48That's a great point.
- 28:50ACDC was pretty much the
- 28:51same band throughout.
- 28:53Van Halen and Sabbath were
- 28:55the same as well.
- 28:58And Linkin Park, everybody but the drummer,
- 29:01I think, is back and the lead singer.
- 29:10helped that the singers of
- 29:11acdc sounded the same I
- 29:13would say similar for sure
- 29:15uh there's definitely a
- 29:16different tone to both um
- 29:19but I appreciate both and I
- 29:21listen to both um and enjoy
- 29:25that so just wanted to
- 29:28that's what this show is
- 29:28going to be about it's just
- 29:29going to be random thoughts
- 29:30that I have and posing
- 29:32questions to you guys about
- 29:33different things that I'm
- 29:36seeing throughout my week
- 29:38The last thing I'm going to
- 29:39leave you with is the new
- 29:43fall shows aren't on.
- 29:44There's no new releases.
- 29:47And so I'm really watching
- 29:49two shows right now.
- 29:51And my question to you is
- 29:54going to be stream or binge?
- 29:57So I'm watching two shows.
- 29:58One is Suits on Netflix.
- 30:01All nine seasons are there.
- 30:03I can start from episode one
- 30:05and I can bang out five,
- 30:07six episodes a night if I wanted to.
- 30:10The other show I'm watching is Bad Monkey,
- 30:13which is great.
- 30:14Weird,
- 30:17but great with Vince Vaughn on Apple TV.
- 30:20And they release one episode a week,
- 30:23just like old traditional TV.
- 30:26So with Suits, I can binge, binge, binge.
- 30:30And then with Bad Monkey,
- 30:32I can watch one episode and
- 30:33then I have to stop and
- 30:34wait for the next one to come out.
- 30:37You as a consumer, what do you prefer?
- 30:41And do you think there's a
- 30:42better way of doing it?
- 30:44Either stream it for binge or...
- 30:48Or put it out one episode at
- 30:50a time and make you watch
- 30:51in the traditional way.
- 30:53I've heard the reason Apple TV does that.
- 30:56They did it with Ted Lasso.
- 30:57They're doing it with Bad Monkey.
- 30:59They do it with some of
- 30:59their other shows is that
- 31:01it keeps the conversation
- 31:02going on great shows longer than a week.
- 31:06So.
- 31:06So.
- 31:37But if you're not watching Bad Monkey,
- 31:38I'm going to finish up with this.
- 31:44Holly,
- 31:44I remember it better streaming each week.
- 31:52Bad Monkey is really good if
- 31:54you're not watching it.
- 31:55It's a Vince Vaughn show on Netflix.
- 31:58It's a quirky show that
- 31:59takes place in the Florida Keys.
- 32:02He is a former detective
- 32:04trying to get his way back
- 32:06into the police department.
- 32:09and back into being an
- 32:12active duty policeman or
- 32:13detective and kind of a
- 32:17murder happens ish.
- 32:19And he's kind of thrown in
- 32:21the middle of it to try to figure out.
- 32:23And,
- 32:24and so that's what we're following is
- 32:28him trying to figure out this, this,
- 32:32this mystery and,
- 32:34The best part of the show is the narrator.
- 32:37There's a narrator over the
- 32:38top of it that talks about
- 32:40what's going on as it's happening,
- 32:43and he makes the entire show.
- 32:45I would call it a dark comedy.
- 32:49There are some really funny moments,
- 32:51but it is about a murder and people dying,
- 32:54and so it is probably more
- 32:57of a dark comedy.
- 33:00Clock says my vote doesn't count.
- 33:02I steal everything from the pirate sites.
- 33:06Well, there you go.
- 33:07That's one way to do it.
- 33:09So when you do that clock, can you binge?
- 33:12Like,
- 33:13if you're stealing something from Apple,
- 33:15can you get the episodes
- 33:16before they're released?
- 33:18Or do you have to wait till
- 33:19they're all released?
- 33:26I have to say, like,
- 33:27I do have a site that I use for sports.
- 33:33to be able to watch the
- 33:35Chicago Bears because I
- 33:37don't live in Chicago.
- 33:44But I'm just curious.
- 33:45I've never used those for TV or movies,
- 33:49but I know people who have,
- 33:51and I've had much success with it.
- 33:52I just didn't know how the
- 33:53episodes worked.
- 33:56Does it have to be active
- 33:57for you to be able to get it?
- 34:02Okay.
- 34:03I have binged,
- 34:04but of course you have to
- 34:05wait until everything's published.
- 34:06If we're currently running series,
- 34:08I watch week to week.
- 34:09Okay.
- 34:10So just like us,
- 34:11you're stuck in the same hole we are.
- 34:17Well, cool.
- 34:18Well, again, this is a new show.
- 34:21Make sure you like,
- 34:22subscribe to the channel, and notify.
- 34:25Right now,
- 34:26I don't have a plan for a
- 34:28certain time these are going to come on.
- 34:30This is just when I have
- 34:30something I want to say
- 34:32about different subjects
- 34:33that are going on.
- 34:35I felt like this week with
- 34:36everything going on and the
- 34:38internet blowing up over
- 34:39the CrossFit thing,
- 34:41I didn't have an avenue for
- 34:43me just to come on here and
- 34:45talk about what I was thinking.
- 34:48and talk to you guys as an
- 34:49audience and get your reaction to that?
- 34:53Or do I just get sucked into
- 34:54the internet and all that it is?
- 34:57So that's what this is
- 34:59designed for so that I can
- 35:00pop on at any time and do
- 35:02one of these and just talk
- 35:04about what's going on.
- 35:05It could be ten minutes long.
- 35:07It could be an hour long.
- 35:08I don't know.
- 35:10But I wanted to try it.
- 35:13Maybe we'll hook up the
- 35:14phone for this show and
- 35:16I'll put out the phone
- 35:18number that you guys can
- 35:20call in and participate.
- 35:26So I don't have to do all the talking.
- 35:29But yeah, that's what this is.
- 35:32It's just going to be this.
- 35:33It's going to be my stream
- 35:34of consciousness.
- 35:38And we'll talk about
- 35:39whatever is in this brain of mine.
- 35:43Clark says, for example,
- 35:44I binge the Sopranos.
- 35:51For example,
- 35:51I binge the Sopranos a long time ago,
- 35:53but I felt my soul turning
- 35:54dark and never got past season six.
- 36:00I thought there was only six
- 36:00seasons of the Sopranos.
- 36:06I've seen all the Sopranos.
- 36:10The longer it goes,
- 36:11the worse I thought it got as a show.
- 36:16And the ending was atrocious.
- 36:19I'll never understand the ending.
- 36:21No matter how many times
- 36:23they try to explain it to me,
- 36:25the ending is just atrocious.
- 36:28But the first season of
- 36:29Sopranos is some of the
- 36:30best TV I've ever watched.
- 36:34When his mother is still alive,
- 36:36it is insanely good.
- 36:45But anyway,
- 36:47and I've watched it a few times through.
- 36:53Yeah, first few seasons are dazzling.
- 36:55They are.
- 36:56First couple seasons of
- 36:57Sopranos are so good.
- 36:58So good.
- 37:00And then I was living that live.
- 37:03I was watching it as it was
- 37:04coming out on HBO.
- 37:06And you'd have to wait
- 37:08freaking years for the next season.
- 37:10And I think with all that stuff happening,
- 37:13it just got out over its
- 37:15skis and went to places it
- 37:19shouldn't have went.
- 37:24Holly says, Carolyn's IV story yesterday.
- 37:26Is she doing okay?
- 37:27Do you know?
- 37:28She's doing fine.
- 37:31I talked to Lex a little bit yesterday.
- 37:34I'm sure Carolyn will be on
- 37:36tomorrow night with our
- 37:37normal show to fill you in
- 37:39as to what happened.
- 37:40But yeah, she's doing okay.
- 37:52Okay.
- 37:54So yeah, that's that.
- 37:56That's what this show is going to be.
- 37:57If you guys have any topics
- 37:59you want to talk about to throw out there,
- 38:01shoot them at me.
- 38:02Again, it can be about anything.
- 38:07We can talk about anything.
- 38:08Movies, TV, CrossFit, sports, baseball.
- 38:13If I know about it, I will talk about it.
- 38:17Um,
- 38:18but thank you everybody for
- 38:20participating.
- 38:21Uh, this was fun.
- 38:22That's what this is supposed to be about.
- 38:23It's supposed to be an
- 38:24audience engagement show
- 38:26where we just kind of talk
- 38:27about the stuff that's
- 38:28going on and we'll still
- 38:29have our normal shows.
- 38:31So the round table on
- 38:32Tuesdays still have a cross Sunday night,
- 38:35CrossFit talk tomorrow night, uh,
- 38:37Sunday night.
- 38:39With that, tomorrow,
- 38:41my Bears take the field for
- 38:42the first time this year.
- 38:43I could not be more stoked.
- 38:45I don't know if I'm even
- 38:46going to sleep tonight.
- 38:48I love Chicago Bear football
- 38:51as much as I love anything.
- 38:52CrossFit, Chicago Bear football.
- 38:54Those are my two loves, and my wife,
- 38:57and my daughter.
- 38:58Yeah, those two.
- 38:59But those are the loves of my life,
- 39:01and Chicago Bear football
- 39:02happens tomorrow,
- 39:03and I cannot be any more excited.
- 39:06So I am sure that that will
- 39:08be some of the subject
- 39:09matter as we go through this year.
- 39:12With that, Lynn,
- 39:13so glad you could join us.
- 39:14Hope it was not too late and
- 39:16you got the gist of what
- 39:17we're trying to do here.
- 39:18But just trying to have some fun,
- 39:21talk about stuff that's
- 39:22going on in a safe environment.
- 39:24With that, we'll see everybody next time.
- 39:27And, hey, check us out tomorrow night,
- 39:28Sunday Night CrossFit Talk.
- 39:30Don't forget to jump on.
- 39:32We'll talk about NorCal Classic.
- 39:33We'll talk about all the
- 39:35stuff I just talked about with the –
- 39:38Luca letter, the Dave Castro apology,
- 39:42the CrossFit email,
- 39:43and the fallout from all that.
- 39:45With that, we'll see everybody next time.
- 39:48Bye, guys.
