- 0:37Speaker 5: quit saying, Caleb.
- 0:38Speaker 6: Farley, baseball strike zone is a subjective. It's different for
- 0:42Speaker 6: every bad But what.
- 0:42Speaker 5: I'm saying, no, it is, it's it's your strike zone.
- 0:45Speaker 5: Is your strike zone? Paul Perillo strike zone is defined, right,
- 0:50Speaker 5: is it?
- 0:51Speaker 4: You're right? I mean I don't like.
- 0:52Speaker 6: I just like I don't think it's it's the same.
- 0:56Speaker 6: Tennis is not the same as a baseball strike zone.
- 1:00Speaker 1: About five minutes later, but Paul Perilla.
- 1:03Speaker 4: Strike zone can be defined, right? No, why can't it be?
- 1:07Speaker 2: I think dol Russell would still be good no matter what.
- 1:09Speaker 1: Well he's old and dead? Well is he dead?

- 1:28Speaker 1: don't worry. We got the three migos. Is that peeping
- 1:32Speaker 1: the deuce with Lazarre side with our special guests, A
- 1:35Speaker 1: special guest and introducing Evan Lazar.
- 1:38Speaker 4: Yes, introduced.
- 1:39Speaker 2: I've never been here before.
- 1:40Speaker 1: It's Tuesday here at Jillette Stadium and we're grinding through
- 1:44Speaker 1: the off season.
- 1:45Speaker 4: Guys.
- 1:45Speaker 1: It's a little bit of Patriots news today, but otherwise
- 1:48Speaker 1: I feel like we've hit the void. And this is
- 1:50Speaker 1: where kind of all the draft research piles up and
- 1:53Speaker 1: you start silly season starts to happen. You start to
- 1:56Speaker 1: get stupid rumors or things about guys getting pushed down
- 1:59Speaker 1: the board.
- 1:59Speaker 4: We have in a good stupid rule, No, not yet,
- 2:01Speaker 4: I have. I'm a stupid room.
- 2:03Speaker 1: But isn't this the time usually when you hear about well,
- 2:05Speaker 1: you know, this guy has got a terrible attitude. Actually
- 2:07Speaker 1: think Jordan Tyson's the one getting it right now with
- 2:10Speaker 1: his Yeah, I felt like there was a Daniel Jeremiah
- 2:13Speaker 1: clip where it seemed like he was holding back a
- 2:15Speaker 1: little bit, that he might be maybe a little soft.
- 2:18Speaker 1: But this is whenever all that news starts coming out,
- 2:21Speaker 1: the rumors trying to push guys up and down the board.
- 2:24Speaker 1: But I don't know about you, guys. I feel like
- 2:26Speaker 1: I'm starting to get a little bit antsy for the draft.
- 2:29Speaker 1: But I also and this is kind of a topic
- 2:30Speaker 1: I did some show prep. Paul be proud of me.
- 2:33Speaker 1: I like to talk about today just and I think
- 2:35Speaker 1: this happens every year with drafts. Like you look at
- 2:37Speaker 1: it and you say, well, they need this position, and
- 2:38Speaker 1: they told us they got to get a tight end,
- 2:40Speaker 1: and they love the edge class, and you know, when
- 2:42Speaker 1: you really the rubber meets the road, you're like, all right, well,
- 2:45Speaker 1: is this six round tackle pick really going to move
- 2:47Speaker 1: the needle? Or is this six round tight end really
- 2:49Speaker 1: going to be what Mike Rabel was talking about. So
- 2:51Speaker 1: we can get into that a little bit about the
- 2:53Speaker 1: about the needs and how to balance all those lining
- 2:56Speaker 1: up their needs with with what's strong in the draft class.
- 2:58Speaker 1: But just think off the top. Marty Mapu totally released
- 3:03Speaker 1: this morning, so there's some real Patriots News. What do
- 3:06Speaker 1: you think about that one?
- 3:07Speaker 2: Yeah, I think we have been talking about linebackers as
- 3:11Speaker 2: a need for the Patriots, or just at least as
- 3:14Speaker 2: a position they might target to add somebody to the pipeline.
- 3:18Speaker 2: And I feel like I give the same take about
- 3:21Speaker 2: tight end tackle, linebacker, safety, where it's it might not
- 3:26Speaker 2: be a twenty twenty sixth need where there's this hole
- 3:30Speaker 2: on the roster, but you start to look at the
- 3:32Speaker 2: ages and the wear and tear on some of the
- 3:35Speaker 2: guys that are starting for this team, and you start
- 3:38Speaker 2: to think about the next chapter, and you know, Mapu
- 3:41Speaker 2: obviously it just didn't work out for him here, and
- 3:45Speaker 2: I would say the biggest reason being that he was
- 3:48Speaker 2: probably always a linebacker. Then they try to do that
- 3:51Speaker 2: whole hybrid safety thing in the old defense with Kyle
- 3:54Speaker 2: Dugger and Jabriel Peppers, and they never really developed that linebacker,
- 3:59Speaker 2: So then they try to slip him back into linebacker
- 4:01Speaker 2: under girod Mayo. And at that point, once it got
- 4:04Speaker 2: to Vrabel, I think it was kind of too late, right,
- 4:06Speaker 2: like the developmental curve had kind of probably right run
- 4:09Speaker 2: out that he probably wasn't going to be able to
- 4:11Speaker 2: do that now is he ever going to be a
- 4:12Speaker 2: great player? Probably not, But I think that there would
- 4:15Speaker 2: have been a better chance if he had just focused
- 4:18Speaker 2: on one position, And I think that's maybe a position
- 4:22Speaker 2: that was also the one that was best suited for him,
- 4:25Speaker 2: which I always thought was him playing at the second
- 4:27Speaker 2: level at linebacker.
- 4:28Speaker 1: Bulk him up a little bit. I mean his body
- 4:30Speaker 1: always body type SEMT.
- 4:32Speaker 6: Yeah, I think everything Evin said is more than fair.
- 4:35Speaker 6: You know, I just look at it as the the
- 4:39Speaker 6: a the athlete I think is what attracted Bill Belichick
- 4:42Speaker 6: to him. But at the same time, you look at
- 4:45Speaker 6: it and say, well, he's a guy who did a
- 4:46Speaker 6: lot of different things at a you know, at Sacramento State,
- 4:49Speaker 6: at a level of football. I mean, I'm not trying
- 4:52Speaker 6: to be disrespectful, but it's a little less than the
- 4:54Speaker 6: SEC or the Big ten, shall we say so exactly
- 4:58Speaker 6: water he fit. I think he was one of the
- 5:00Speaker 6: those classic tweeners. But you know in the bigger pitcher,
- 5:03Speaker 6: like Kevin said, you know, you still have Spolly and
- 5:05Speaker 6: you still have Ellis. But that's now three guys from
- 5:08Speaker 6: last year's team, Tavai Gibbons and now Maphu who gave
- 5:12Speaker 6: you some quote unquote depth at that position that you know,
- 5:16Speaker 6: I'd be surprised if they didn't come out of the
- 5:18Speaker 6: draft at some point with an.
- 5:19Speaker 4: Off ball linebacker.
- 5:20Speaker 1: Yeah, right, and some extent Anthony Jennings too, not I
- 5:23Speaker 1: know what you're saying, off the ball, but yeah, just
- 5:26Speaker 1: second level edge defender kind of stuff.
- 5:28Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 5:28Speaker 2: You know, they signed kJ Britt, who I think is
- 5:30Speaker 2: going to replace a lot of the special team stuff
- 5:32Speaker 2: that these other guys have left behind and maybe kind
- 5:36Speaker 2: of like a Christian Ellis, there's more there on defense
- 5:39Speaker 2: with kJ Britt and the right system, the right coaching staff.
- 5:42Speaker 2: But like I said, we've been talking about these linebackers
- 5:45Speaker 2: for months now. It's a good linebacker class. There's a
- 5:48Speaker 2: lot of depth to it. I think where that sweet
- 5:51Speaker 2: spot is is an interesting conversation because again, you know,
- 5:55Speaker 2: it's a depth pick. It's not you're not drafting a.
- 5:58Speaker 4: Lot S thirty one. Yeah, so you know.
- 6:01Speaker 2: This week, you know, in September week one, So where
- 6:06Speaker 2: do you take that? I think, you know, you there's
- 6:08Speaker 2: a lot of guys that there are a lot of
- 6:09Speaker 2: positions that you could say, probably like the third or
- 6:12Speaker 2: fourth round, they'll take one of those. It's like, well,
- 6:14Speaker 2: you can only do that at you only have three
- 6:16Speaker 2: picks in the third or fourth round, so you can't
- 6:18Speaker 2: do it everywhere. But when you start to look at
- 6:20Speaker 2: some of the guys, you know, we can name names
- 6:22Speaker 2: and all that good stuff. But I still think that's
- 6:25Speaker 2: kind of the sweet spot. I know a lot of
- 6:26Speaker 2: people really like Jacob Rodriguez at the top, or you
- 6:30Speaker 2: know C. J. Allen or Anthony Hill Junior from Texas.
- 6:34Speaker 2: That's those are going to be probably top fifty guys. Yeah,
- 6:38Speaker 2: And I think that's a little bit too early. So
- 6:41Speaker 2: maybe it kind of starts with like the Jack Gold
- 6:44Speaker 2: days of the world, Jake Gold Days of the World,
- 6:46Speaker 2: and then kind of moves on down to you know,
- 6:49Speaker 2: my guys like Fisher and Betcher from Oregon and you
- 6:52Speaker 2: know that sort of te Harold Perkins maybe in there
- 6:54Speaker 2: somewhere too. So I think that's kind of what you're
- 6:57Speaker 2: looking at, is that mid round range to just get
- 7:00Speaker 2: somebody to add into the pipeline, not necessarily to play
- 7:04Speaker 2: and start right away.
- 7:05Speaker 1: How many positions do you feel like fall under that category.
- 7:08Speaker 2: Though, like all of them, you know, I you know,
- 7:12Speaker 2: we're starting to put our big boards together, Deuce, and
- 7:14Speaker 2: I'm like, I gotta have a couple of corners on
- 7:17Speaker 2: here because it's not a it's not a top one
- 7:20Speaker 2: hundred need most likely, but Carl Davis is starting to
- 7:23Speaker 2: get a little bit older, that third cornerback spot could
- 7:26Speaker 2: probably be upgraded anyways, you know, in terms of outside corners,
- 7:30Speaker 2: no offense to Chucky trees, but like maybe you can
- 7:32Speaker 2: get a little bit better there as well. And so
- 7:35Speaker 2: you corner is kind of one of those safety is
- 7:37Speaker 2: kind of one of those linebackers, kind of one of
- 7:39Speaker 2: those tight end is definitely one of those offensive tackle
- 7:42Speaker 2: is one of those guard with you know on when
- 7:44Speaker 2: he was in a contract year. You never know what's
- 7:47Speaker 2: going to happen with Elijah Vera Tucker in his injury history.
- 7:51Speaker 2: So I just think PA like six possessions, only you
- 7:55Speaker 2: only have five picks that I think are meaningful picks. Right,
- 7:58Speaker 2: you know, once you get past the fourth round, we're
- 8:00Speaker 2: starting to throw We're throwing darts, we're taking lottery tickets.
- 8:03Speaker 1: You just summed up everything that I kind of teed
- 8:05Speaker 1: up at the part of the show, which I think
- 8:07Speaker 1: this happens every year where you especially when you look
- 8:09Speaker 1: at next year's needs and you think about you know, Keisham, Bouti,
- 8:12Speaker 1: Douglas Hollins all going to be free agents. Christian ellis
- 8:15Speaker 1: going to be a free agent. So on one hand,
- 8:17Speaker 1: you're looking at the edge position where I think you
- 8:19Speaker 1: could have immediate help, and we've talked a little bit
- 8:21Speaker 1: about tight end. Maybe there's a spot to have some
- 8:23Speaker 1: immediate help there. But do you look at the good
- 8:26Speaker 1: positions and where you can get immediate help? Are you
- 8:28Speaker 1: looking an eye ahead to next year? Which I think
- 8:31Speaker 1: is what the best teams do, right that's really where
- 8:34Speaker 1: they're looking at. Yes, the thirty one, maybe you get
- 8:36Speaker 1: an impact player, but yeah, you need a balance.
- 8:39Speaker 4: You need to fill the holes that you have too.
- 8:41Speaker 6: Like I agree that there's a lot of you know
- 8:44Speaker 6: down the road, you know needs that they're going to
- 8:48Speaker 6: have to address.
- 8:50Speaker 4: But you should be able to get a guy.
- 8:51Speaker 6: Who can play right away in the first round, regardless
- 8:55Speaker 6: you know, third or thirty.
- 8:57Speaker 4: First you should be able to get a guy who
- 8:59Speaker 4: can play.
- 9:00Speaker 6: Now I'm not talking you know, a ten year starter
- 9:03Speaker 6: and plug him in as a Pro Bowl or five
- 9:04Speaker 6: you know, five time Pro Bowl or yeah that's a hit,
- 9:07Speaker 6: but you should be able to get a guy who
- 9:09Speaker 6: has the ability to play in the NFL reasonably fast. Yeah,
- 9:13Speaker 6: in the first round.
- 9:14Speaker 2: I think I kind of settling on and this is
- 9:17Speaker 2: pretty par for the course, not like anything groundbreaking, but
- 9:21Speaker 2: at thirty one, draft a player that's going to make
- 9:24Speaker 2: an immediate impact. Draft somebody at edge, maybe playmaker, receiver,
- 9:28Speaker 2: tight end, probably receiver. I don't I don't know there's
- 9:31Speaker 2: going to be a tight end there to take, but
- 9:33Speaker 2: one of those types of positions that that's the guy
- 9:36Speaker 2: you're drafting to help the twenty twenty six Patriots. Then
- 9:40Speaker 2: once you get out of the first round, this is
- 9:42Speaker 2: when we start to get into the conversations that we're
- 9:44Speaker 2: having about.
- 9:45Speaker 4: Right pipelines.
- 9:48Speaker 6: Point And it's just I do remember back because you know,
- 9:53Speaker 6: you know, I think everybody remembers how badly the draft
- 9:55Speaker 6: ended for Belichick. But there was a long stretch that
- 9:59Speaker 6: Belichick and his staff did a really good job of
- 10:03Speaker 6: balancing the short and long term. They did a really
- 10:07Speaker 6: good job from say two thousand and you know, one
- 10:11Speaker 6: two all the.
- 10:12Speaker 4: Way through you know, thirteen.
- 10:15Speaker 6: Yeah, you know, it was a good stretch of Yeah,
- 10:19Speaker 6: we can take a Lawrence Moroni in a year, and
- 10:22Speaker 6: you know, we have Corey Dillon, so you know, we
- 10:26Speaker 6: were sort of setting something up, but there was also
- 10:28Speaker 6: guys like Logan Mankins that plugged right in and were
- 10:31Speaker 6: immediate starters.
- 10:34Speaker 4: You know.
- 10:35Speaker 6: Then they also i mean would not have to get
- 10:37Speaker 6: into a whole historical thing, but they also did a
- 10:40Speaker 6: great job of finding diamonds in the rough and and
- 10:43Speaker 6: you know, starters in the third, fourth, and fifth rounds
- 10:46Speaker 6: like Dan Copen and it's Sante Samuel and you know,
- 10:49Speaker 6: all kinds of guys like that. So it's unfortunately for Belichick,
- 10:53Speaker 6: the well just ran dry and all of a sudden
- 10:56Speaker 6: he didn't have it anymore.
- 10:57Speaker 4: But I don't think they were in.
- 10:59Speaker 6: A position, say like they were, you know in eleven,
- 11:04Speaker 6: you know, nine, ten, eleven, twelve, You know, they know
- 11:08Speaker 6: they're going to win twelve thirteen games.
- 11:10Speaker 4: They know they're going to be in the AFC Championship game.
- 11:12Speaker 6: We can take Matt Light's replacement because we don't care
- 11:15Speaker 6: if he doesn't play this year. And Nate Solder turned
- 11:18Speaker 6: out that he had to play that year because they
- 11:19Speaker 6: ended up having injuries. But they didn't take that player
- 11:22Speaker 6: with the idea, you know, the idea that he was
- 11:24Speaker 6: going to start right away. I don't think this team
- 11:28Speaker 6: is in that spot. I don't think they're they're that
- 11:30Speaker 6: good quote unquote that they can just say, well, I mean,
- 11:34Speaker 6: if there was someone there that just blew them away
- 11:36Speaker 6: and they didn't have an immediate need for it, sure
- 11:38Speaker 6: take them. But I don't really think that's the best
- 11:42Speaker 6: course right now for the way the Patriots are situated.
- 11:45Speaker 1: I mean, I'm just thinking about which positions do you
- 11:48Speaker 1: really realistically say they don't need that, they don't need that.
- 11:50Speaker 1: I mean, I could quarter quarterback, right quarterback, maybe running back.
- 11:54Speaker 1: Maybe you can make an argument at running back, and
- 11:56Speaker 1: maybe even you know, and this is getting into what
- 11:59Speaker 1: I want to talk about it like where do you
- 12:01Speaker 1: what do you put put off? You know, do you
- 12:04Speaker 1: I don't want to say put off tight ends because
- 12:05Speaker 1: Verbel's been talking about the tight end group forever. But
- 12:08Speaker 1: you know, I find when I screw around with mock drafts,
- 12:10Speaker 1: it's like, you know, you always miss Kenyan Cidek and
- 12:13Speaker 1: then you got guys start going in the middle of
- 12:15Speaker 1: that second round, and you know, so now you know,
- 12:17Speaker 1: I'm looking at trading up to get one of those
- 12:19Speaker 1: tight ends that you know before you get into developmental territory,
- 12:23Speaker 1: which Evan's got a whole piece on tight ends Paul
- 12:25Speaker 1: that I I had the proofery because Fred and a
- 12:27Speaker 1: choker out today, so I it was all on me
- 12:29Speaker 1: to make sure Evan nailed it. But sure, but it
- 12:31Speaker 1: was good. It was a good way to kind of
- 12:34Speaker 1: I'm happy with this. I was tasked with with young
- 12:38Speaker 1: Bazars right up. But it was really good. And it's
- 12:39Speaker 1: always you know what I like is, especially with the
- 12:41Speaker 1: Beast coming out, is you do all this kind of
- 12:43Speaker 1: draft research and then you get like a new something
- 12:46Speaker 1: to read and kind of consider, and you know, I
- 12:48Speaker 1: thought of that as your piece this morning. But you know,
- 12:50Speaker 1: it's hard to thread the needle on that position you
- 12:53Speaker 1: mentioned linebacker. You know, by the time you get to
- 12:55Speaker 1: the fourth round, it's hard to say, yeah, this guy's
- 12:58Speaker 1: going to come in. And you know, that's why it's like,
- 13:00Speaker 1: I feel like the top half of the draft you
- 13:02Speaker 1: need guys to immediately fill holes. And even though they
- 13:05Speaker 1: have eleven draft picks, that those day three guys, I
- 13:07Speaker 1: think they really got to be good this year, especially
- 13:09Speaker 1: looking towards next year where you're thinking about those positions
- 13:13Speaker 1: that you're going to have, you know are going to
- 13:14Speaker 1: open up you. You know, Hunter Henry, maybe they extend him,
- 13:17Speaker 1: but that's a long term need. Morgan Moses, you know,
- 13:19Speaker 1: maybe he has another full healthy season, but that's probably
- 13:21Speaker 1: going to be a need sooner and later. Go right
- 13:23Speaker 1: down the list, you know. That's that's where it just
- 13:26Speaker 1: gets hard. I think it happens every year, though. You
- 13:28Speaker 1: get to these mock drafts and you're like, well, I
- 13:29Speaker 1: can't get these guys because I'm way down, you know,
- 13:31Speaker 1: and you're trading up, and you're trading down and trying
- 13:33Speaker 1: to make.
- 13:33Speaker 4: It all work.
- 13:34Speaker 2: I think that, you know, I'm larger with Paul and
- 13:38Speaker 2: I have been this whole time that it just feels
- 13:41Speaker 2: a little bit too soon to make a luxury pick
- 13:45Speaker 2: of we're going to draft and stash a guide that's
- 13:48Speaker 2: really a player that we're expecting to start in twenty
- 13:51Speaker 2: twenty seven. I don't know if they're there yet.
- 13:54Speaker 3: Now.
- 13:54Speaker 2: The one exception I think to that is probably tackle,
- 13:57Speaker 2: just because.
- 13:58Speaker 4: I would agree there's just no tackles in.
- 14:00Speaker 2: A draft like this that after the top forty picks,
- 14:03Speaker 2: I would say that I feel great about So if
- 14:07Speaker 2: Yanna Jor or Blake Miller or Lomu or one of
- 14:10Speaker 2: those guys, is sitting there at thirty one that I
- 14:13Speaker 2: can be talked into, But at pretty much every other position,
- 14:16Speaker 2: I really don't feel that way.
- 14:19Speaker 4: You know.
- 14:19Speaker 2: I think you mentioned which positions do they not need?
- 14:22Speaker 2: I still don't really think corners that pressing, even even
- 14:26Speaker 2: if you for like a fourth corner, like we can
- 14:30Speaker 2: do that on day three and throw a flyer on
- 14:33Speaker 2: a trade skuy that's got some speed and some size
- 14:36Speaker 2: and see if he develops on day three, if they
- 14:38Speaker 2: end up needing to move on from Carlton Davis, or
- 14:41Speaker 2: if Marcus Jones starts to catch up, you know, the
- 14:43Speaker 2: wear and tear starts to catch up with him. I'm
- 14:46Speaker 2: assuming that Christian Gonzalez is going to be here long term.
- 14:50Speaker 2: You can make You can make that pick in twenty
- 14:51Speaker 2: twenty seven. You don't need to make that pick this year.
- 14:54Speaker 6: I would largely agree with that. I have a question
- 14:56Speaker 6: for you, guys, so I agree with something haven't said
- 15:00Speaker 6: a little while ago about you know, you have just
- 15:02Speaker 6: those those top picks, you know, once you get past
- 15:05Speaker 6: the two fourth rounders, you kind of yeah, but you
- 15:08Speaker 6: have all those sixth rounders, you know, is that enough
- 15:11Speaker 6: to maybe get another pick into the area that you
- 15:15Speaker 6: deem valuable.
- 15:16Speaker 2: Do you think I think it's enough to slightly move
- 15:19Speaker 2: up the board in one of those rounds, you know,
- 15:22Speaker 2: within the round. Now, are you going to create a
- 15:24Speaker 2: whole new pick out of it? Probably not, But if
- 15:27Speaker 2: you are looking to let's say they're at one twenty
- 15:30Speaker 2: five in the fourth round, right, if they really like
- 15:33Speaker 2: somebody at the back end of the third round, could
- 15:36Speaker 2: they package some picks together to move up back into
- 15:39Speaker 2: the third round so they make two picks in the
- 15:41Speaker 2: third round instead of two picks in the fourth.
- 15:43Speaker 4: I get that. I get that. I agree with you.
- 15:45Speaker 6: What I was wondering is could you somehow package you
- 15:48Speaker 6: know that I know I sound like a I sound
- 15:51Speaker 6: like a caller, and.
- 15:52Speaker 4: I get it.
- 15:52Speaker 6: You have four sixth round picks for is there anything
- 15:57Speaker 6: that you could package to get a you know, a pick,
- 15:59Speaker 6: say round one thirty?
- 16:01Speaker 1: Yeah? Uh, I wish I had my note card because
- 16:04Speaker 1: I just did this exercise. I pulled up and get
- 16:06Speaker 1: Jimmy Johnson board.
- 16:07Speaker 2: It depends on how right. It depends.
- 16:09Speaker 4: Not to be nice because I might be being like
- 16:11Speaker 4: a caller here. I want to trade, you know.
- 16:14Speaker 1: Paul, I did this exercise yesterday, so I might not
- 16:16Speaker 1: make it fun of you at all. I was just
- 16:17Speaker 1: you know, it's fun to play with those numbers to see, well,
- 16:19Speaker 1: what would these two picks?
- 16:21Speaker 6: You know, what would just I was talking about, like
- 16:23Speaker 6: it's really five picks. I one thousand percent agreed, Like,
- 16:27Speaker 6: you're going to get some backup lineman, you know, on
- 16:30Speaker 6: day three, you're going to get some backup defensive backs
- 16:33Speaker 6: on day three, and hopefully if you if you, if
- 16:36Speaker 6: you hit it and you get a little lucky, you
- 16:38Speaker 6: might get a couple of players there. But like, it's
- 16:40Speaker 6: not something necessarily that you rely on. So how do
- 16:43Speaker 6: you get the picks that are a little bit more reliable?
- 16:46Speaker 2: Yeah, I think there's two different kind of trades that
- 16:49Speaker 2: I look at. One is obviously the one I just
- 16:51Speaker 2: talked about, which is to trade from the fourth round
- 16:53Speaker 2: back into the third round, so you make two third
- 16:56Speaker 2: round picks.
- 16:56Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 16:57Speaker 2: The other one that I would say is that you're
- 16:59Speaker 2: at sixty three at the second in the second round,
- 17:01Speaker 2: if you trade sixty three one of your fourth and
- 17:06Speaker 2: one or two of your sixth, you could maybe move
- 17:08Speaker 2: from sixty three back into the top fifty, and now
- 17:11Speaker 2: you can make a pick at thirty one and a
- 17:14Speaker 2: pick at fifty. And I don't know about you guys,
- 17:17Speaker 2: but every time, and maybe this is just my laziness,
- 17:21Speaker 2: four six round picks is egregious. Like, I don't I
- 17:23Speaker 2: don't even know if there's there's like room on the
- 17:26Speaker 2: roster for four six round picks. So if you start
- 17:30Speaker 2: to use those, even though they're not worth a ton, like,
- 17:33Speaker 2: maybe they can be filler in a bigger trade to
- 17:37Speaker 2: try to move up from the end of the second
- 17:39Speaker 2: to the middle of the second or the fourth back
- 17:41Speaker 2: into the third or something along those lines, to kind
- 17:45Speaker 2: of get in on one of these runs at one
- 17:47Speaker 2: of these positions, and so you don't lose out on everybody.
- 17:49Speaker 1: It's like the quality verus quantity exactly exactly the other
- 17:53Speaker 1: trade thing that I was sort of wondering about.
- 17:55Speaker 6: And I think Bill Barnwell wrote a little bit about
- 17:57Speaker 6: this yesterday. He had kind of an interesting piece. He
- 18:00Speaker 6: had every team trading in the first round, you know,
- 18:04Speaker 6: you know, throughout the draft.
- 18:05Speaker 4: I don't know if you guys caught any of this.
- 18:07Speaker 6: Sounds like a bar yeah, I mean it was, you know,
- 18:10Speaker 6: and listen, I think Bill Barnwell does a terrific job.
- 18:12Speaker 6: I've said this many times. I must be I think
- 18:14Speaker 6: he's really really good. I just don't have the time
- 18:16Speaker 6: to read, you know, four thousand words on you know,
- 18:20Speaker 6: trading from thirty one, you know, down to put in
- 18:23Speaker 6: or whatever it is. But just the premise of trading
- 18:28Speaker 6: out of that first round pick for the Patriots, which
- 18:30Speaker 6: could give them, you know, an additional second round pick
- 18:34Speaker 6: if they slid down a few spots. Maybe someone high
- 18:37Speaker 6: in the second round wants to get up and maybe
- 18:40Speaker 6: and you know, Barnwell I think rightly analyzes it by
- 18:45Speaker 6: saying there's some value at the end of that first
- 18:48Speaker 6: round for that fifth year, you get one extra year
- 18:51Speaker 6: of control.
- 18:53Speaker 4: It's not just.
- 18:54Speaker 6: Well, the Jets want to trade because they want to
- 18:56Speaker 6: trade up and you see if they can get Ty Simpson.
- 18:58Speaker 6: It's not just about that. It's not just about a quarterback.
- 19:01Speaker 6: It's about any player to get that additional year of control.
- 19:06Speaker 6: And the Patriots may look at it and say, well,
- 19:08Speaker 6: I can get maybe a two wint of three to
- 19:10Speaker 6: get two with Evans picks that he finds some value
- 19:13Speaker 6: win And how much different is that than thirty one
- 19:15Speaker 6: if you slide down a few spots.
- 19:17Speaker 4: I don't know.
- 19:17Speaker 1: I don't hate the thirty one trade down, and I
- 19:20Speaker 1: this is a recurring theme for me. I feel like,
- 19:22Speaker 1: I don't know if you feel the same way, but
- 19:24Speaker 1: it's always like the guys I love most are going
- 19:26Speaker 1: like ten to twenty five in the second round, like
- 19:29Speaker 1: those just like the middle chunk of the second round
- 19:31Speaker 1: always seems like there's so many, you know, good promising players,
- 19:34Speaker 1: maybe with one potential flaw. But you know, somebody you
- 19:37Speaker 1: look at and you say, I think this guy's gonna
- 19:40Speaker 1: you know, immediately come in and you know, develop into something.
- 19:43Speaker 1: But I also just find myself wondering, like are we
- 19:46Speaker 1: underrating players that we don't know and you you know
- 19:49Speaker 1: mentioned cornerback. I look at like Marcellus Dial who I
- 19:51Speaker 1: thought had a good camp last year before he tore
- 19:53Speaker 1: his ACL. You know, Kobe Minor was a rookie last
- 19:56Speaker 1: year who got brought up to the roster at the
- 19:57Speaker 1: end of the season. You're, you know, you're mentioning, Hey,
- 20:00Speaker 1: let's take a flyer on these guys on day three.
- 20:02Speaker 1: These are guys from the last two years that they've
- 20:03Speaker 1: taken flyers on in Day three. And then by that
- 20:06Speaker 1: same token, you know, are we sleeping on Elijah Ponder
- 20:09Speaker 1: or Braden Swinston. You know, are we not giving them
- 20:12Speaker 1: the credit that maybe the team is giving them saying
- 20:14Speaker 1: we think Elijah Ponter is gonna come in and be
- 20:16Speaker 1: part of a really good three man rotation with Harol Landry.
- 20:20Speaker 1: You know, That's where I'm trying to figure out, what
- 20:21Speaker 1: what's the truth. What do they really actually need? What
- 20:24Speaker 1: is this?
- 20:25Speaker 6: I look at Dial and mine or both, they like
- 20:27Speaker 6: him as special teamers. Yeah, I don't necessarily see having
- 20:31Speaker 6: you know, but you're right, we don't know.
- 20:33Speaker 4: I don't know that. I mean, that's just the way
- 20:35Speaker 4: I look at it. I mean maybe the guy probably yeah, Dial.
- 20:39Speaker 2: Dial to me is a fourth or fifth cornerback that
- 20:42Speaker 2: can play in a pinch on defense.
- 20:44Speaker 6: But his reputation was as an excellent special team player,
- 20:48Speaker 6: not just a guy who played special teams.
- 20:50Speaker 4: But he was really good at what his role was.
- 20:52Speaker 2: Yeah, he was projecting towards maybe competing a little bit
- 20:55Speaker 2: for snaps at corner before he got hurt in camp
- 20:57Speaker 2: last year. So it's it's possible, but just quickly on
- 21:01Speaker 2: the trade down out of the first round, if we
- 21:06Speaker 2: just you know, play a little bit of make believe
- 21:08Speaker 2: here for a second, if you trade out of thirty
- 21:11Speaker 2: one and you trade with the team, I don't know
- 21:14Speaker 2: if you're doing it in the division, but the.
- 21:15Speaker 4: Jets, Yeah, that's one of the ones that barnwell.
- 21:17Speaker 2: The Cardinals, you know, teams like that that need a quarterback.
- 21:21Speaker 2: They want to come up to draft Ty Simpson and
- 21:24Speaker 2: they want to get to the front of the line
- 21:26Speaker 2: and get that fifth year option on Ty Simpson. Can
- 21:30Speaker 2: you get a pick in twenty twenty seven, Because if
- 21:33Speaker 2: you can get a pick in twenty twenty seven out
- 21:34Speaker 2: of this trade, there's a certain receiver in Philadelphia that
- 21:37Speaker 2: might be available post June one, And now you have
- 21:41Speaker 2: extra AMMO to put that pick that you got from
- 21:44Speaker 2: the trade down in the trade for AJ Brown, And
- 21:46Speaker 2: so now you're not giving up one of your own picks,
- 21:49Speaker 2: maybe for AJ Brown, you're giving up somebody else's future
- 21:52Speaker 2: twenty twenty seven picks. So I think for a lot
- 21:55Speaker 2: of reasons a trade down makes sense because if you
- 21:59Speaker 2: can get something in twenty twenty seven eight, it's just
- 22:01Speaker 2: supposedly a better draft, which I think are always valuable picks.
- 22:06Speaker 2: But also if you're thinking still about AJ Brown, then
- 22:09Speaker 2: maybe you have extra AMO to go get AJ Brown
- 22:12Speaker 2: with the twenty seven picks by adding twenty seven picks,
- 22:14Speaker 2: So I don't even know if you need to trade
- 22:16Speaker 2: down necessarily to have, like the prize of the trade
- 22:20Speaker 2: be a twenty twenty six draft pick. I kind of
- 22:22Speaker 2: almost rather it be a twenty twenty seven sure draft
- 22:24Speaker 2: pick at that.
- 22:25Speaker 4: Point, I so interested in all those scenarios.
- 22:27Speaker 2: It can't be twenty twenty six at all. But I
- 22:29Speaker 2: just think that the twenty twenty seven picks are going
- 22:31Speaker 2: to have a little bit more value for those couple
- 22:33Speaker 2: of reasons.
- 22:34Speaker 1: But along those lines, is there a wide receiver that
- 22:36Speaker 1: could be there at thirty one that would make you say,
- 22:39Speaker 1: we can put off this AJ Brown thing. We got
- 22:42Speaker 1: a guy that maybe it's not going to be the
- 22:44Speaker 1: immediate impact that a veteran like AJ Brown might have
- 22:47Speaker 1: because it's hard to see it in that range that
- 22:49Speaker 1: there would be a guy to take him off the
- 22:51Speaker 1: board field.
- 22:52Speaker 2: Yeah, I think if you're looking at positions, like which
- 22:55Speaker 2: positions would move the needle the most if you drafted
- 22:58Speaker 2: them there, edge rusher receiver are the two, Like we
- 23:02Speaker 2: can talk ourselves into tackles and stuff like that. As
- 23:05Speaker 2: a developmental need to replace Morgan Moses. But if you're
- 23:08Speaker 2: looking for a player to come in and help the
- 23:11Speaker 2: twenty twenty six Patriots and move the needle the most,
- 23:13Speaker 2: it's those two spots wide receiver. I think that, you know,
- 23:17Speaker 2: Denzel Boston's a guy I've sort of gone back and forth,
- 23:20Speaker 2: and I've struggled with Denzel get he's not and I've
- 23:25Speaker 2: sworn off those types of players. I've you know, I've
- 23:29Speaker 2: been burned. I've been hurt in the past by that
- 23:32Speaker 2: exact archetype, that exact one to get hurt. But is
- 23:36Speaker 2: he closer and this is what I kind of grapple with.
- 23:39Speaker 2: Is he closer to the Drake London's and the Tep
- 23:42Speaker 2: mcmillans than he is to the Keyon Coleman's and then
- 23:44Speaker 2: Nikhil Harry's. And if you think that he's closer to
- 23:47Speaker 2: that top end of that spectrum, then he's worth a
- 23:50Speaker 2: first round pick because I don't think he's quite as
- 23:53Speaker 2: good as those two, especially after the catch and you know,
- 23:57Speaker 2: the build up speed and all that kind of stuff.
- 23:59Speaker 2: You know, the guy I compared him to his more
- 24:00Speaker 2: of like a Courtland Sutton who's a nice player, but
- 24:03Speaker 2: probably not you know, a number one big time difference
- 24:07Speaker 2: maker like Ted and Drake London. But if he fits
- 24:11Speaker 2: that for you, you know, I think we've talked a
- 24:13Speaker 2: lot about size on the outside and getting a guy
- 24:16Speaker 2: down the field that can win the ball for Drake May.
- 24:18Speaker 2: And you know, there's something enticing about May growing with
- 24:24Speaker 2: the player.
- 24:24Speaker 1: It's appealing to me.
- 24:26Speaker 2: Yeah, as opposed to it's almost like a mercenary thing
- 24:29Speaker 2: that they're doing right now with It would be Diggs
- 24:31Speaker 2: for a year and then it would be aj Brown
- 24:33Speaker 2: for a year or two and then it would be
- 24:34Speaker 2: the next guy. And is that really the pattern you
- 24:37Speaker 2: want to get yourself into with Drake May where every
- 24:40Speaker 2: one to two years his number one receiver is changing
- 24:43Speaker 2: and it's somebody new. Now you have to hit on
- 24:44Speaker 2: the pick, like you can't just say let's just do
- 24:47Speaker 2: it to grow together. It sounds great in theory, but
- 24:51Speaker 2: if it's Jalen Polk then it's not going to work right,
- 24:54Speaker 2: So you have to be right.
- 24:55Speaker 6: That was my schnarky response to Mike. Yeah, like last
- 24:58Speaker 6: week or a couple of weeks ago. Wow, it's great,
- 25:01Speaker 6: Yeah it works.
- 25:02Speaker 2: Yeah, you know, Casey Concepcion is my type of guy. Yeah,
- 25:06Speaker 2: you know, maybe Romeo Dobbs bumps outside a little bit
- 25:08Speaker 2: more than we except Michael Mark Cooper too, Yeah, really
- 25:11Speaker 2: good too. You know all those guys I think are
- 25:14Speaker 2: in shouting distance, you know, are they all going to
- 25:16Speaker 2: make it to thirty one?
- 25:17Speaker 4: No?
- 25:17Speaker 2: But one of them probably will.
- 25:20Speaker 1: Not to jump into emails too soon because we you
- 25:22Speaker 1: know per Fred's usual, you know, order of events that
- 25:26Speaker 1: have to happen. We have to set the table first.
- 25:27Speaker 1: Much of the table is quite say yet. But I'm
- 25:29Speaker 1: going to hop into this just I thought it was
- 25:30Speaker 1: an interesting email from Chris. It's just says, Hey, guys,
- 25:33Speaker 1: it seems like a lot of analysts think conception she
- 25:35Speaker 1: own is out of the question at thirty one shitty
- 25:37Speaker 1: fall because the style of play overlaps with Dobbs. Could
- 25:41Speaker 1: having guys that overlap like that create more versatility organically,
- 25:44Speaker 1: as opposed to a guy like Brazzl or Boston that
- 25:47Speaker 1: will come in and strictly play one spot. Also, one
- 25:49Speaker 1: guy I would like you to look into his Josi
- 25:51Speaker 1: Green from Duke Haia character high motor guy, and he's
- 25:53Speaker 1: also my wife's cousin.
- 25:57Speaker 6: Say, generally, I'm not interested in the high motor guests,
- 26:00Speaker 6: especially at skilled positions.
- 26:01Speaker 4: But in this case, I will make an exceens.
- 26:03Speaker 1: He's a DTAM. He's a defensive tackle. Oh okay, yeah,
- 26:07Speaker 1: but that I mean sums up well. And I mean
- 26:10Speaker 1: I would say that I don't think Boston would be
- 26:12Speaker 1: confined to just outside like I think they could move
- 26:15Speaker 1: him around a little bit. Yeah, Matt Collins Ish, yeah.
- 26:19Speaker 2: You know, maybe play tight splits.
- 26:21Speaker 1: But I do get it. I do get you know,
- 26:23Speaker 1: before the Dobbs signing, Conceptium was a very popular Patriots.
- 26:27Speaker 6: A lot of people have said that, I know Evan
- 26:29Speaker 6: said it immediately, there's there's there might be some duplication
- 26:32Speaker 6: if you think he is good enough. I kind of like,
- 26:36Speaker 6: I mean, I like CONCEPTI on a lot. I liked
- 26:37Speaker 6: him watching Texas A and M during the course of
- 26:40Speaker 6: the season, just the impact that he made on games.
- 26:42Speaker 6: He was one of those guys that when you watch
- 26:45Speaker 6: them play, he impacted the game pretty much every time.
- 26:50Speaker 6: I would take him if you think he's that that
- 26:52Speaker 6: kind of a player, Whether or not it happens immediately
- 26:55Speaker 6: with him and Dabbs together, it might take you a
- 26:58Speaker 6: little while to figure that out. How they but you know,
- 27:00Speaker 6: Evan just said, you know, maybe Dobbs could move and
- 27:03Speaker 6: play a different role.
- 27:04Speaker 4: Who knows.
- 27:05Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, I mean he certainly did in Green Bay.
- 27:07Speaker 2: Like you know, this is I think we see Romeo
- 27:10Speaker 2: Dobbs as uh, you know, kind of in that bigger
- 27:14Speaker 2: Z slot kind of molds you know, kind of like
- 27:16Speaker 2: a Jacobi Meyers type of player. But he does have
- 27:19Speaker 2: that ability to play on the outside. He did it
- 27:21Speaker 2: in Green Bay. Now not necessarily all the time, all
- 27:23Speaker 2: the way outside, but it's you know, semantics.
- 27:27Speaker 5: Uh.
- 27:27Speaker 2: Casey is one of my favorites. I mean, he's he's
- 27:30Speaker 2: probably the best pure separator in the draft, like just
- 27:34Speaker 2: the guy that creates the most separation on his routes.
- 27:37Speaker 2: I don't think that there's any doubt that he's at
- 27:40Speaker 2: least at the top of that list.
- 27:41Speaker 4: You know.
- 27:41Speaker 2: The drop rate is something that people bring up and
- 27:43Speaker 2: are concerned about, But to me, like the drops happen
- 27:46Speaker 2: in these like in like the high traffic areas over
- 27:48Speaker 2: the middle of the field where maybe he you know,
- 27:51Speaker 2: hears some footsteps and stuff like that and you know
- 27:53Speaker 2: kind of alligator arms one here and there. I don't
- 27:56Speaker 2: look at his hands as like, I don't think he
- 27:58Speaker 2: has bad hands. I think he's a guy that's a
- 28:01Speaker 2: high volume guy that' sees a lot of targets and
- 28:03Speaker 2: a lot of chaos in every once in a while
- 28:06Speaker 2: he drops a pass. You know, I don't look at
- 28:08Speaker 2: his hands as bad as Contesta's catcher right as you know,
- 28:12Speaker 2: sixty six percent, which normally tells you that, you know,
- 28:15Speaker 2: he's pretty good finishing through contact and that type of thing.
- 28:18Speaker 2: So I'm not overly concerned about it. He's just you know,
- 28:21Speaker 2: he's six feet one ninety one ninety five somewhere around there,
- 28:25Speaker 2: so he's not he's an inside guy, you know, he's
- 28:27Speaker 2: a guy that needs to play off the line, play
- 28:29Speaker 2: in the slot, you know, do that sort of thing.
- 28:31Speaker 2: I don't think that he's your true ex but other
- 28:34Speaker 2: than that, you know, I think he's one of the
- 28:37Speaker 2: best in this class. And I think that he's probably
- 28:39Speaker 2: closer honestly, and for a lot of people to the
- 28:43Speaker 2: Makayle Lemon Tate, Tyson Tate tier than he is to
- 28:46Speaker 2: like this next tier. People just have concerns about the drops.
- 28:49Speaker 1: Yeah, kind of reminds me a little twenty eleven when
- 28:51Speaker 1: they got rid of Moss and then they had was
- 28:53Speaker 1: twenty ten. Sorry, the branch and Welker, but always thought
- 28:56Speaker 1: we're kind of similar players. Didn't really have a big
- 28:58Speaker 1: outside guy figure. They can move you know, guys around.
- 29:02Speaker 1: But I just I continue to wonder we're going to
- 29:04Speaker 1: come out of this draft and be like, well, they're
- 29:05Speaker 1: definitely getting a J.
- 29:06Speaker 4: Browns.
- 29:06Speaker 1: They didn't touch wide receiver, like you know, and even
- 29:08Speaker 1: if they did touch wide receiver, I don't know if
- 29:09Speaker 1: it necessarily precludes them from getting no because the next year, Yeah,
- 29:15Speaker 1: in a.
- 29:15Speaker 4: Perfect world you'd be able to do both.
- 29:17Speaker 6: But yeah, I mean, if they don't take a wide
- 29:20Speaker 6: receiver in the first, say three picks, and I think
- 29:24Speaker 6: you could write that story, then AJ Brown's coming.
- 29:27Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 29:27Speaker 2: Yeah, I just wonder what you They took a third
- 29:30Speaker 2: round pick on Kyle Williams last year and another mid
- 29:35Speaker 2: round draft pick at that position on a guy that
- 29:38Speaker 2: just you know, has you know, Kyle Williams obviously has
- 29:41Speaker 2: really good speed, really good release ability, like that's a
- 29:44Speaker 2: trade of his, but he's not somebody that had a
- 29:47Speaker 2: well rounded skill set that was going to go higher
- 29:49Speaker 2: up in the draft. That's what you're going to find
- 29:51Speaker 2: in that range of the draft is guys that have
- 29:53Speaker 2: one really high end trade that you're hoping can kind
- 29:57Speaker 2: of build.
- 29:57Speaker 4: A truly instead of tools.
- 30:00Speaker 2: Yeah right, and you know, like you're gonna get like
- 30:03Speaker 2: your Stribblings, your Bryce Lances, like guys that can get
- 30:06Speaker 2: down the field Ted Hurst, maybe, which is exciting, but
- 30:12Speaker 2: it's kind of like redundant to me, like to what
- 30:14Speaker 2: they already have. Like how many more times are you
- 30:17Speaker 2: kind of gonna just throw like a dart at somebody
- 30:19Speaker 2: in the third round and expect that guy to turn
- 30:22Speaker 2: into you know, your guy? Like that just doesn't really
- 30:25Speaker 2: happen very often anymore, maybe like it did once upon
- 30:28Speaker 2: a time, but now that the receiver position has been
- 30:30Speaker 2: pushed up the board so much, it feels like you
- 30:33Speaker 2: have to kind of draft that guy early in order
- 30:36Speaker 2: for him to really turn out to be I know,
- 30:38Speaker 2: everybody always goes back to the twenty nineteen draft and
- 30:41Speaker 2: is like, well, they got Terry McLaurin, And it's like,
- 30:43Speaker 2: I just don't see that happening around the league very
- 30:46Speaker 2: often anymore, because I think teams realize now how important
- 30:50Speaker 2: that position is, and so the Terry mclaurins are just
- 30:53Speaker 2: not not lasting.
- 30:55Speaker 1: I just don't want to lose the plot with this team.
- 30:57Speaker 1: That's why it's I felt coming into the offseason that
- 30:59Speaker 1: they were so obvious and they made some signings in
- 31:02Speaker 1: free agency, a lot of one for one so that
- 31:04Speaker 1: the holes aren't necessarily apparent, nose tackle maybe being one.
- 31:09Speaker 1: Another position we haven't even talked about. That really one
- 31:12Speaker 1: of the only spots they didn't one for one and
- 31:14Speaker 1: that's another spot. Where are we day?
- 31:16Speaker 4: You know?
- 31:16Speaker 1: Day three? Are you gonna get? I mean, I know
- 31:18Speaker 1: the big guys like sometimes they last that long, but
- 31:21Speaker 1: I just find myself regrouping, like what is this team's
- 31:23Speaker 1: biggest need right now? Like what is going to hold
- 31:25Speaker 1: this team back? And how can you solve that problem
- 31:29Speaker 1: or attempt to solve that problem in the draft if
- 31:31Speaker 1: if you even can.
- 31:34Speaker 4: I still think it's.
- 31:34Speaker 2: Probably passing game offensively, whether it's offensive line or receiver.
- 31:39Speaker 2: But with the offensive line, I think that you're hoping
- 31:41Speaker 2: for internal growth, and I don't know what the other
- 31:45Speaker 2: path is, Like I think you're just hoping that Campbell
- 31:48Speaker 2: gets bigger and stronger and better. Jared Wilson moving to
- 31:51Speaker 2: center helps, Verk Tucker going in at guard helps, and
- 31:54Speaker 2: you're just kind of hoping that all of those moves
- 31:57Speaker 2: kind of add up to a better product, you know,
- 32:00Speaker 2: and it push comes to shove when the competition gets
- 32:03Speaker 2: ramped up at edge. I think that there's what they
- 32:07Speaker 2: think of Harold Landry's status, I think is the most
- 32:10Speaker 2: interesting thing there. You know. I think they kind of,
- 32:13Speaker 2: you know, in my opinion, they sort of know what
- 32:15Speaker 2: Elijah Ponder is, you know. I think he's probably a
- 32:17Speaker 2: third pass rusher, play on third down, play in special teams.
- 32:22Speaker 2: If you're expecting an undrafted rookie to be more than that,
- 32:25Speaker 2: I think you're asking a lot. If they feel like
- 32:27Speaker 2: they can get a full season out of Harold Landry,
- 32:29Speaker 2: that that is very different than them thinking I don't
- 32:33Speaker 2: know if that kneed's going to bounce back, right, We
- 32:35Speaker 2: don't know if Harold Landry is going to be healthy.
- 32:38Speaker 2: We don't know if he's going to be the Harold
- 32:40Speaker 2: Landry that he was at the beginning of last season. Like,
- 32:43Speaker 2: we don't know if that player is still in there.
- 32:45Speaker 2: If they think that they have doubts about Harold Landry
- 32:48Speaker 2: and his status, then I think you you almost have
- 32:51Speaker 2: to take an edge early because that player might need
- 32:53Speaker 2: to start, you know, and you're just like looking at it.
- 32:56Speaker 2: That's probably the biggest starting hole if Landry's not ready
- 32:59Speaker 2: to go.
- 33:00Speaker 6: I think your question is an interesting one because I
- 33:02Speaker 6: really think when you said, you know what, what's the
- 33:05Speaker 6: biggest hole?
- 33:06Speaker 4: What might hold them back?
- 33:07Speaker 6: And I think if you look at everything right now
- 33:09Speaker 6: on paper, it's very similar to what you went into
- 33:13Speaker 6: the season with last year.
- 33:15Speaker 4: You know, there's different names in different spots. You know,
- 33:17Speaker 4: guys have.
- 33:18Speaker 6: Come and gone, and I don't think there is like
- 33:22Speaker 6: an enormous hole really anywhere.
- 33:25Speaker 4: I think Evan's right.
- 33:26Speaker 6: I think edge is probably the biggest one in terms
- 33:28Speaker 6: of starter. I worry more about the passing offense. Just
- 33:34Speaker 6: the way he said the question is it worked out
- 33:39Speaker 6: last year? You know, sort of having these kinds of holes,
- 33:43Speaker 6: and everybody said what was I think all three of us,
- 33:46Speaker 6: to you know, individually, all said what to the to
- 33:49Speaker 6: the following question, what is the biggest concern?
- 33:52Speaker 4: Depth never really materialized?
- 33:55Speaker 1: Yeah, the the healthiest team in the league.
- 33:57Speaker 6: Because you know, a they had some guy that quite
- 34:00Speaker 6: frankly played a little bit better in depth roles than
- 34:03Speaker 6: maybe we thought Christian Ellis, Jack Gibbons, some guys like that,
- 34:08Speaker 6: you know, even a guy like Charles Woods I think
- 34:10Speaker 6: contributed at times.
- 34:11Speaker 1: Getting all Morgan Moses all games played, you.
- 34:14Speaker 6: Know, but they didn't really have that depth tested that much.
- 34:18Speaker 6: That's probably unrealistic, you know. So you ask, you know, what,
- 34:21Speaker 6: what hole, what what could hold them back? What could
- 34:24Speaker 6: be their demise? And I would say that is probably it. Yeah,
- 34:28Speaker 6: and I still think the roster lacks depth.
- 34:30Speaker 1: Especially on the offensive line where they signed James Hudson,
- 34:33Speaker 1: who you know has been a swing tackle in the league,
- 34:35Speaker 1: but he's right now your third guy up. And then
- 34:38Speaker 1: you know Ben Brown has filled in at those spots,
- 34:40Speaker 1: so I mean you do have an interior backup, but
- 34:43Speaker 1: you know that those are really the two guys. I mean,
- 34:45Speaker 1: Kate Wallace couldn't really even make it into a game
- 34:47Speaker 1: last year. And then I you know, still have needs
- 34:49Speaker 1: at right guard behind Michael when you for next year
- 34:51Speaker 1: and his his contracts up as a potential replacement, and
- 34:53Speaker 1: then you know the Morgan Moses of it all. But
- 34:56Speaker 1: you know, to Evan's point, you're Will Campbell, Jared Wilson,
- 35:00Speaker 1: Morgan Moses injury away from you know, at this point,
- 35:04Speaker 1: really scrambling, and I don't even know how much a
- 35:07Speaker 1: rookie third round pick, right you know, is going to
- 35:10Speaker 1: make you feel all that much better at both spots.
- 35:13Speaker 2: In the interior, I think you could get away from
- 35:15Speaker 2: them starting a rookie there, or Ben Brown goes in
- 35:18Speaker 2: and the rookie is now backing up instead of that,
- 35:21Speaker 2: you know that sort of thing. But tackle right now
- 35:24Speaker 2: is a little bit scary. And that's why we talk
- 35:27Speaker 2: about tackle at thirty one is because drafting Iana Troy
- 35:31Speaker 2: there isn't just about the future. It could if somebody
- 35:33Speaker 2: gets hurt, it could be now, and it could be
- 35:36Speaker 2: now quickly, and you know, he would probably have a
- 35:40Speaker 2: very very inside track or him or Miller whoever to
- 35:44Speaker 2: being the top swing tackle. And if either one of
- 35:46Speaker 2: those guys gets hurt, and it's gonna probably be the
- 35:48Speaker 2: rookie that gets the call if you wait on it.
- 35:51Speaker 2: You know, I do think that you're looking more towards
- 35:54Speaker 2: the developmental side of things, and you know, drafting guys
- 35:57Speaker 2: like markl. Bell or you know, crown Over or Bowery
- 36:02Speaker 2: or any of those guys, I think you're talking about
- 36:06Speaker 2: their ceiling being swing tackle, not just you know that
- 36:09Speaker 2: they are not ready, but also I'm not really sure
- 36:12Speaker 2: I feel comfortable saying that they're going to be starters
- 36:14Speaker 2: in the league, like they probably are destined to be
- 36:18Speaker 2: like third tackles. There's nothing wrong with that. But if
- 36:20Speaker 2: somebody goes down, you know, for a considerable amount of time,
- 36:23Speaker 2: and you lose somebody for the season, Now you're asking
- 36:26Speaker 2: a rookie that you kind of projected to be a
- 36:28Speaker 2: third tackle anyways. Now he's got to start ten games,
- 36:31Speaker 2: you know, or start in the playoffs or something like that.
- 36:33Speaker 2: It's a lot to ask for. So that's why tackle
- 36:36Speaker 2: at thirty one makes a lot of sense. I think guard,
- 36:38Speaker 2: especially when you start to bake in all of the
- 36:40Speaker 2: tackles that are going to be guards because they have
- 36:42Speaker 2: short arms that are going inside from college, like in
- 36:45Speaker 2: the middle rounds, Like it gets beefy there.
- 36:47Speaker 6: And they made a little bit, I mean, maybe not
- 36:49Speaker 6: you know, a huge investment per se, but they made
- 36:52Speaker 6: a commitment to Ben Brown, so they he's pretty good
- 36:55Speaker 6: about him backing up any of those three spots. Yeah,
- 36:57Speaker 6: so I don't I'm not as worried about that. Now
- 37:00Speaker 6: if they were to say goodbye to Michael Winnu, which
- 37:02Speaker 6: I still think could be on the table, then that
- 37:06Speaker 6: will be a different story than depth everywhere is a
- 37:09Speaker 6: concern but right now, I'm with you guys. You know,
- 37:12Speaker 6: the tackle. James Hudson is an NFL player, and I
- 37:16Speaker 6: think he could replicate, you know, close to what Vederian
- 37:20Speaker 6: Low gave him. But if something were to you know,
- 37:23Speaker 6: you lost Will Campbell for four games, what happens if
- 37:28Speaker 6: you you know, you're losing four games into the season,
- 37:30Speaker 6: and now we've got to go to the balance. And
- 37:31Speaker 6: you know, we saw, like I thought Badarian Low played
- 37:33Speaker 6: really well, but you saw it kind of you know,
- 37:36Speaker 6: I think by the end of those four games, he
- 37:38Speaker 6: was kind of holding on a little bit. Yeah, you know,
- 37:40Speaker 6: so I don't know if James Hudson would make you
- 37:43Speaker 6: feel any better than you did with Vederian Love.
- 37:45Speaker 1: Now, you can't fix everything, and that's what I mean,
- 37:47Speaker 1: and you have to prioritize, and that's why I guess
- 37:49Speaker 1: I'm you know, I mean, Paul, You've always kind of
- 37:51Speaker 1: said it, like after on day three, you're not really
- 37:54Speaker 1: gonna expect anything.
- 37:55Speaker 6: Out of these guys special surprise.
- 37:58Speaker 1: You know, maybe in the interior off offensive line, you know,
- 38:01Speaker 1: you get a surprise maybe that that seems like a
- 38:03Speaker 1: spot a position where sometimes you get those guys.
- 38:06Speaker 2: But yeah, like taking Tom Brady out of it, and
- 38:09Speaker 2: like even like Julian Edelman to an extent too, like
- 38:12Speaker 2: on when it was is the best case scenario. I
- 38:15Speaker 2: think on day three, like a starting caliber guard in
- 38:17Speaker 2: the sixth round is tough to do. But I think
- 38:20Speaker 2: he got drafted there because of his weight, Like I
- 38:22Speaker 2: don't think he got drafted there because of the tape.
- 38:24Speaker 2: I think teams were afraid of his weight and of
- 38:27Speaker 2: his movement. But Kishawan, Boodie, Pop Douglas, like those guys
- 38:31Speaker 2: were six round picks for different reasons. Like that's kind
- 38:35Speaker 2: of what you're hoping to get. You're not now. I
- 38:37Speaker 2: think inside the top one fifty you can you can hit,
- 38:40Speaker 2: like Craig Woodson looks like he might be a hit
- 38:43Speaker 2: as a fourth round pick. You know, I at different positions, guards,
- 38:47Speaker 2: tight ends, you know, tight end usually you bet on
- 38:49Speaker 2: somebody that's big, tall and fast, and like you hope
- 38:52Speaker 2: that it works out, and a lot of times it does.
- 38:54Speaker 2: You know, sometimes you get George Kittle out of that,
- 38:57Speaker 2: Travis Kelce, you know, like those types of players. So
- 39:00Speaker 2: that those are the positions that if there is going
- 39:03Speaker 2: to be guys that fall through the cracks, it's usually
- 39:05Speaker 2: into your offensive linemen, tight ends that are just toolsy,
- 39:09Speaker 2: you know, raw athletes that develop in the NFL like
- 39:12Speaker 2: stuff like that.
- 39:13Speaker 6: That's why I'm always looking at guys in that area
- 39:16Speaker 6: that you know, Belichick used to say, like third rounders
- 39:19Speaker 6: are like first rounders, but they have something on the
- 39:24Speaker 6: draft card that prevented them from going in the first round,
- 39:27Speaker 6: whether it be an injury, whether it be an off
- 39:29Speaker 6: field concern. He always used to say, third rounders had
- 39:32Speaker 6: first round talent, but there's a reason that no one
- 39:36Speaker 6: wanted him in the first round. And I'm always sort
- 39:38Speaker 6: of looking at guys like that in those middle rounds.
- 39:40Speaker 6: The Day three guys. Kayshan Boody is an example of it.
- 39:43Speaker 6: You know, he was, you know, he was the big,
- 39:47Speaker 6: the big thing when he was a freshman, and all
- 39:49Speaker 6: of a sudden, a couple years later, he wasn't the
- 39:51Speaker 6: big thing anymore.
- 39:52Speaker 4: You know, he had fallen out of favor.
- 39:54Speaker 6: And I'm not saying that that's like, well, you got
- 39:56Speaker 6: Justin Jefferson in the sixth round with Kayshan Boody, but
- 39:59Speaker 6: you've got to know a serviceable NFL player who is
- 40:02Speaker 6: a solid member of your wide receiver core in the
- 40:05Speaker 6: sixth round. Those I gravitate to those guys. Why why
- 40:10Speaker 6: is that guy available still? And then you know, in turn,
- 40:13Speaker 6: you have to have good in depth scouting and conversations
- 40:17Speaker 6: about whatever the reason is that that guy is still available.
- 40:20Speaker 6: Is that worth overlooking or is that too big of
- 40:23Speaker 6: a risk to overlook? You know, I'm always fascinated by
- 40:27Speaker 6: those guys, especially skill guys.
- 40:29Speaker 2: Yeah, there's a couple that immediately come to mind, you know,
- 40:32Speaker 2: different parts of the draft, but in that third fourth
- 40:35Speaker 2: round range, like Harold Perkins to me is just super intriguing.
- 40:39Speaker 4: He's a really good player.
- 40:40Speaker 2: I don't know what he is. Is he a linebacker,
- 40:42Speaker 2: is he a safety?
- 40:43Speaker 6: Is he a nickel? I don't know, but he's a
- 40:46Speaker 6: hell of an athletic. Boy, Mike, he already loves him,
- 40:48Speaker 6: he was talking to. I Mean, it's a sweet It's easy.
- 40:52Speaker 2: To see why he's two hundred and twenty five pounds,
- 40:54Speaker 2: he's running a four to three. Like that's if you
- 40:56Speaker 2: get him with the right coaching staff and the right
- 40:58Speaker 2: system defensively, that can sort of figure him out. Then
- 41:03Speaker 2: like you could be a hell of a player. You know,
- 41:04Speaker 2: early on in his career at LSU, they tried him
- 41:06Speaker 2: as a pass rusher. He was a little too undersized
- 41:08Speaker 2: for that. Then they tried to move him to this
- 41:10Speaker 2: star role that they have there, you know, in the
- 41:12Speaker 2: slot and kind of you know, box safety, slot defender
- 41:15Speaker 2: type of role that seems to be like what his
- 41:18Speaker 2: future is, you know, and I think that he's just
- 41:21Speaker 2: got tremendous upside. The guy that I was thinking, you know,
- 41:23Speaker 2: in the pass rush later on is George Gumms junior
- 41:26Speaker 2: from Florida, who started played three different positions at Florida.
- 41:30Speaker 2: They couldn't figure him out either. He played a little
- 41:32Speaker 2: tight end, he played a little bit off ball, a
- 41:34Speaker 2: little bit on the ball. But he's got you know,
- 41:37Speaker 2: those explosive movements of a pass rusher that should be
- 41:40Speaker 2: able to get after the quarterback. He was just late
- 41:43Speaker 2: to it. He tore his meniscus at one point, and
- 41:45Speaker 2: it just his career has never materialized at Florida. But
- 41:49Speaker 2: if you get your hands on him now and develop
- 41:51Speaker 2: him now from where he is as an out rush
- 41:54Speaker 2: linebacker type, like he's got great athleticism, great tools. You know,
- 41:58Speaker 2: those are the types of guys that on Day three
- 42:01Speaker 2: I'm all for, you know, especially I know it's easy.
- 42:03Speaker 2: But like from those big programs, like you're talking like
- 42:07Speaker 2: LSU Florida. You know, Perkins was the next guy like
- 42:11Speaker 2: he was supposed to be the next star defensive player.
- 42:14Speaker 2: I think he wore number seven like he was supposed
- 42:16Speaker 2: to be a big deal at LSU. You know, those
- 42:19Speaker 2: guys are five star recruits and blue chip talents. They
- 42:23Speaker 2: just their careers like Kaishawan Booty, it just didn't go
- 42:27Speaker 2: great for whatever it puts you.
- 42:29Speaker 6: Know, it puts some pressure on you. But if you
- 42:31Speaker 6: can find out and get comfortable with the reasons, I
- 42:35Speaker 6: think there's some value there for Yeah, those guys.
- 42:37Speaker 2: I mean, I don't know anything about those guys off
- 42:38Speaker 2: the field. You mentioned the beast. I'm sure we'll get
- 42:41Speaker 2: that and figure it out, you know, but you know,
- 42:45Speaker 2: those guys are were more about positions injuries like just
- 42:49Speaker 2: you know, kind of just didn't really figure out their
- 42:52Speaker 2: home in the defense quick enough for them to sort
- 42:56Speaker 2: of develop their you know, the technical aspects and the
- 42:59Speaker 2: nuance of those positions. So you know, you hope that
- 43:03Speaker 2: now that you say, hey, we're going to draft you,
- 43:05Speaker 2: George Gumbs, and you're going to play you know, linebacker,
- 43:07Speaker 2: outside linebacker, you're gonna rush the passer and then you
- 43:10Speaker 2: hope that that allows him to focus in on one
- 43:13Speaker 2: spot and develop.
- 43:14Speaker 1: Well, that's my question is do you think that this
- 43:15Speaker 1: defense that Vrabel Terrell Williams is that core running has
- 43:20Speaker 1: that kind of flexibility to maybe blur the line between
- 43:23Speaker 1: because we're talking about they need they have long term
- 43:25Speaker 1: need at linebacker, they have long term need it at safety.
- 43:28Speaker 1: Some of those guys. I mean, in the past with Bill,
- 43:30Speaker 1: you knew that those positions very specific types, right, yeah,
- 43:34Speaker 1: and now with this system, how did would you see
- 43:36Speaker 1: a guy like him fitting it?
- 43:37Speaker 7: Like?
- 43:38Speaker 1: Is there that flexibility within this system? Yeah, to take
- 43:40Speaker 1: a chance on a smaller linebacker or a bigger safety.
- 43:43Speaker 2: I think Perkins in this system would be a week
- 43:45Speaker 2: side linebacker like in Christian Ellis's spot, and you know
- 43:48Speaker 2: that would be a guy that can cover, can go
- 43:51Speaker 2: sideline to sideline, maybe blitz a little bit. You know,
- 43:54Speaker 2: he has that pass rush background, and they used to
- 43:57Speaker 2: they'd put him in these like blitz spots at LSU
- 43:59Speaker 2: or like he's he was in like a staggered stance
- 44:02Speaker 2: and you knew he was blitzing. It was kind of bizarre,
- 44:04Speaker 2: Like there was no disguising it whatsoever. And so now
- 44:06Speaker 2: you get into an NFL defense and you know, you think, okay,
- 44:09Speaker 2: we'll drop guys out and we'll rush him, and we'll
- 44:12Speaker 2: kind of, you know, dress it up a little bit
- 44:14Speaker 2: for him and maybe give him some clear runways to
- 44:16Speaker 2: the quarterback. You know, that type of thing I think
- 44:19Speaker 2: is where he would fit in. And I think he'd
- 44:21Speaker 2: fit in great. But he's not, in my opinion, like
- 44:23Speaker 2: a green dot kind of guy. Like he's not going
- 44:26Speaker 2: to be a Mike linebacker that's going to be Robert
- 44:28Speaker 2: Splaine and run the whole defense and do that sort
- 44:31Speaker 2: of thing. He's you're, you know, you know, off the line,
- 44:34Speaker 2: weak side playmaking linebacker that's going to make splash plays
- 44:38Speaker 2: while a guy like Splaine is doing the dirty work
- 44:41Speaker 2: and cleaning up the trash. So that's not you need
- 44:43Speaker 2: both Like it's not a bad thing, but that's how
- 44:45Speaker 2: I would view him.
- 44:46Speaker 8: You know.
- 44:46Speaker 2: At safety, I think that they they want guys that
- 44:49Speaker 2: can cover yea like they want, you know, guys that
- 44:52Speaker 2: can cover the back end, that have a lot of
- 44:54Speaker 2: range and have a you know, could uh you know,
- 44:57Speaker 2: burst to the football like that sort of thing. I
- 44:59Speaker 2: don't think that they're looking for Kyle Duggar. Yeah, they're
- 45:02Speaker 2: they're looking for guys that can play on the back end.
- 45:05Speaker 1: All right, well, I think we set the table there. Hey,

- 45:40Speaker 1: we will be back this year, Paul, Right, we'll get
- 45:42Speaker 1: you know. You know you're not going on any trips
- 45:44Speaker 1: this year, right, I know there's no need to call him.
- 45:45Speaker 6: I haven't seen the schedule. I think I think I'll
- 45:48Speaker 6: be all right. I think I'll be all right.
- 45:49Speaker 2: Hopefully no prime national right.
- 45:53Speaker 4: Right, it's get three. Thank you for thanking me. I
- 45:56Speaker 4: appreciate it.
- 45:58Speaker 1: Well, we were talking.
- 45:58Speaker 2: Thinking of myself. I don't want any primetime preseason games.
- 46:01Speaker 2: Those are the worst.
- 46:02Speaker 1: Well we had someone mentioned a wide receivers, so you
- 46:04Speaker 1: know what that means. Eldra calling in. What's up? Elder?
- 46:07Speaker 1: Where are you budd afellas?
- 46:09Speaker 9: How y'all doing now? Like I like I told, I
- 46:11Speaker 9: think that Crystal is in the back background back there,
- 46:14Speaker 9: alex one, I'm at home. I've been home for a while.
- 46:16Speaker 10: I had a little health scare, all right.
- 46:18Speaker 9: So I'm going go stir crazy for being at home,
- 46:21Speaker 9: that's for sure, you know, But all right, I'm doing fine.
- 46:26Speaker 1: All right.
- 46:27Speaker 9: Hey, it's a it's a couple of rumors that we're
- 46:30Speaker 9: hearing in North Carolina and some of those past fans.
- 46:34Speaker 9: So we wonder in about the rumor that we heard
- 46:37Speaker 9: is they're not really trying to sign guns so yet
- 46:42Speaker 9: that they might be in talks, but they are furious
- 46:47Speaker 9: trading for for AJ and letting Gunzo go trade Gunzo
- 46:52Speaker 9: because if AJ comes, he's going to demand another contract
- 46:56Speaker 9: at twenty nine, going to be thirty, And we don't
- 46:59Speaker 9: think that's a damn I'll run keep Gunzo. You know
- 47:04Speaker 9: what do y'all think. Have y'all heard anything like that?
- 47:06Speaker 9: But if what we're hearing down.
- 47:08Speaker 4: Here, I don't know, Yeah, this is you know.
- 47:11Speaker 6: I think Greg Bernard has sort of floated out the
- 47:15Speaker 6: succession theory of if aj Brown comes, they may want
- 47:23Speaker 6: to put off Gonzales for a year. I think they
- 47:27Speaker 6: still you know, Greg, I think still thinks that the
- 47:30Speaker 6: team strongly believes in Gonzales and wants to keep him
- 47:33Speaker 6: long term. But his theory that he's floated, I'm not
- 47:37Speaker 6: necessarily saying I adhere to it, but this is what
- 47:40Speaker 6: he was basically saying is if Brown comes for thirty million,
- 47:44Speaker 6: it's going to be hard for them to then hand
- 47:45Speaker 6: over something in the neighborhood of thirty million annually to Gonzales.
- 47:49Speaker 6: So they want to wait another year, which they could
- 47:52Speaker 6: just because guys like Sauce Gardner and Derek Stingley have
- 47:56Speaker 6: re upped that cornerback after their third year doesn't mean
- 47:59Speaker 6: that everybody has to do that. So that would push
- 48:03Speaker 6: everybody back a year.
- 48:04Speaker 4: Now. The problem with that theory.
- 48:07Speaker 6: Might be the happy Well that's one problem with it,
- 48:09Speaker 6: but I think there's a bigger problem with the theory,
- 48:11Speaker 6: because does it then push back Drake. You know, so
- 48:17Speaker 6: Greg was sort of theorizing that it would be Brown,
- 48:20Speaker 6: then Gonzales, and then May again fourth year for Gonzales.
- 48:24Speaker 6: It would be the fourth year for May instead of
- 48:26Speaker 6: the third year, where that way you could first start
- 48:28Speaker 6: doing that. I think that's a really dangerous game to
- 48:31Speaker 6: play for the reason that Mike just said. Number one,
- 48:34Speaker 6: it's you run the risk of alienating your best defensive
- 48:38Speaker 6: player and you're not really going to play this Russian
- 48:43Speaker 6: Roulette game with your quarterback.
- 48:44Speaker 4: I don't think they will.
- 48:47Speaker 6: I think that you know, there have been times over
- 48:51Speaker 6: the years that we've been a little critical of the
- 48:53Speaker 6: Patriots and their ability to re up these guys. And
- 48:56Speaker 6: I remember, I'm old enough to remember, as the kids
- 48:59Speaker 6: like to say, when it was Chandler, Jones, Dante, high Tower,
- 49:03Speaker 6: and Jamie Collins all coming up at the same time,
- 49:05Speaker 6: and to a leisure extent, Malcolm Butler and everybody's like, oh,
- 49:08Speaker 6: they'll resign those guys. And they ended up like they
- 49:11Speaker 6: basically held onto high Tower.
- 49:12Speaker 1: Yep, that was it, and even let him, like the Steelers.
- 49:15Speaker 6: Right, they let him go out and look and I
- 49:17Speaker 6: think he failed a physical and that's why he ended
- 49:20Speaker 6: up staying here.
- 49:21Speaker 4: But I just think this is different.
- 49:24Speaker 6: I think when you're dealing with Drake May in a
- 49:26Speaker 6: franchise quarterback, I don't think you can do that. So
- 49:31Speaker 6: I think at some point Gonzalis will get done this offseason.
- 49:35Speaker 6: In addition to the the A J. Brown, because I
- 49:38Speaker 6: do think AJ Brown, I think Eldrid's right. Some of
- 49:41Speaker 6: the reports out of Philadelphia have indicated that Brown's going
- 49:44Speaker 6: to be looking for a new deal, you know, but exactly,
- 49:49Speaker 6: I think you can get by with Brown because it's
- 49:52Speaker 6: a short term thing.
- 49:52Speaker 4: It's only a couple of years. So I have faith.
- 49:57Speaker 6: Maybe I'm foolish to have that faith, but that's what
- 49:59Speaker 6: the read I think that Elder is probably referring to
- 50:02Speaker 6: is Greg Bnard has everybody pushed back a year, which
- 50:05Speaker 6: I do not like that that theory at all.
- 50:07Speaker 1: Well, what do you think about the timing right now
- 50:08Speaker 1: with Gonzalez? Is this?
- 50:10Speaker 11: Uh?
- 50:10Speaker 1: I mean?
- 50:10Speaker 2: Or we in the window where a little impatient with
- 50:13Speaker 2: Gonzales right now, like they're not there isn't really a
- 50:18Speaker 2: deadline for them to do this.
- 50:20Speaker 4: No happened in the summer, right.
- 50:22Speaker 2: And so I understand that everybody kind of wants is
- 50:25Speaker 2: obviously we all want to keep the player, and everybody
- 50:28Speaker 2: wants this to get done so that I would love
- 50:30Speaker 2: for it to get done so we get stopped talking
- 50:32Speaker 2: about it and getting asked about it. But like, I
- 50:34Speaker 2: don't don't like confuse inactivity on the negotiation with them
- 50:41Speaker 2: not wanting to sign him long term because there's no
- 50:44Speaker 2: he's under contract, so there's no like rush to get
- 50:48Speaker 2: him an extension. He's under contract. The extension is not
- 50:52Speaker 2: even going to kick in until twenty twenty seven anyways,
- 50:55Speaker 2: because he's going to play on the last year of
- 50:56Speaker 2: his rookie deal and then it will be extended on
- 50:59Speaker 2: top of that. Like, I just think that there's a
- 51:02Speaker 2: lot of time still that they have, you know, Sauce
- 51:04Speaker 2: Gardner and those guys. I don't know about Stinglely, but
- 51:07Speaker 2: like a lot of those guys signed their contracts in
- 51:09Speaker 2: like August.
- 51:10Speaker 4: N These things happened in the summer.
- 51:12Speaker 2: Absolutely rolls back around and everybody gets back in the
- 51:14Speaker 2: building and that sort of thing, and they get it
- 51:17Speaker 2: across the finish line and they signed the contract. I
- 51:20Speaker 2: understand it's hanging over the Patriots right now. But it's
- 51:23Speaker 2: I'm in no like, I'm not sweating it at all.
- 51:26Speaker 2: Like I don't think that we're there in any rush,
- 51:28Speaker 2: norse should they be to like we need to do
- 51:30Speaker 2: this today, Like I don't think it's like that.
- 51:32Speaker 1: Well, just along those lines, this is a question I
- 51:34Speaker 1: have for you guys next year's free agency group. And
- 51:37Speaker 1: this might be a partially and complete list, but I
- 51:39Speaker 1: would just throw this list out there and ask you
- 51:41Speaker 1: guys if there's anybody that you would realistically consider trying
- 51:45Speaker 1: to keep around or maybe giving it an offer to
- 51:47Speaker 1: Kaishan Boody, Hunter, Henry Tomarrio, Douglas, Mike ol One, You
- 51:51Speaker 1: mc hollins, Christian Ellis, Bryce Behringer, some of the deaf guys,
- 51:55Speaker 1: Farms Pettis, Kevin Byern's on one year deal, Jesse Luketta,
- 51:59Speaker 1: kJ Britt, Corey Durden. I mean, Corey Durden might be
- 52:02Speaker 1: the most interesting name on that list to me in
- 52:04Speaker 1: terms of and I don't know what that says about
- 52:07Speaker 1: that list, but is there anybody? I mean, I haven't
- 52:09Speaker 1: heard any we haven't gotten any calls about extending Kaishan Boody,
- 52:13Speaker 1: you know, And I'd be interested in.
- 52:14Speaker 6: A lot of those veterans, But based off of what
- 52:16Speaker 6: I see this year, you know, like Kevin Byrd's on
- 52:19Speaker 6: a one year deal, does he turn in another year
- 52:21Speaker 6: like you did last year for Chicago, because I'd be
- 52:23Speaker 6: interested in re upping that Hunter Henry kind of the
- 52:26Speaker 6: same thing.
- 52:27Speaker 4: My guess right now, probably going.
- 52:30Speaker 6: To move on from both of them because I kind
- 52:33Speaker 6: of think it's going to go the other way. But
- 52:37Speaker 6: you know, Kaishan Boody, what if Fred's right and Paul,
- 52:41Speaker 6: Mike and Evan are all wrong? Right, Yeah, I'd read
- 52:44Speaker 6: up that if he's if he's got another gear to
- 52:47Speaker 6: get to.
- 52:48Speaker 2: If you if you think that though, then you need
- 52:50Speaker 2: you should do that now because if he goes out
- 52:52Speaker 2: and hasn't a thousand yard season next year, then he's
- 52:55Speaker 2: going to be asking for twenty million dollars.
- 52:56Speaker 4: A year, right, But if he does it, I would
- 52:58Speaker 4: want to give it to him. Baby.
- 53:00Speaker 2: Yeah. I look on On you know, Henry and on Winny,
- 53:04Speaker 2: like Henry. If they draft the tight end this year
- 53:08Speaker 2: and Henry comes back with the understanding that that tight
- 53:12Speaker 2: end is probably gonna chip away at some of his
- 53:14Speaker 2: playing time, but he's still going to have a contract,
- 53:17Speaker 2: He's still gonna have a role, and you know, maybe
- 53:19Speaker 2: he's more of his second tight end pass game player
- 53:22Speaker 2: and the rookie is the one that's doing a lot
- 53:24Speaker 2: of the dirty work and heavy lifting. I could be
- 53:27Speaker 2: convinced into that that's a good second tight end, you know,
- 53:30Speaker 2: when you're in certain packages and stuff like that. On Wenny,
- 53:33Speaker 2: who I think is a really good player, and if
- 53:36Speaker 2: he can keep his weight down and keep himself, you know,
- 53:39Speaker 2: in shape and all that kind of stuff, I see
- 53:41Speaker 2: his type of game aging well because I don't think
- 53:44Speaker 2: they you might lose a little bit of foot speed,
- 53:46Speaker 2: but you're not gonna lose power.
- 53:47Speaker 6: That one's the toughest one for me, of because everything
- 53:50Speaker 6: you said about him as a player, I would agree with.
- 53:53Speaker 6: He's in the seventeen to nineteen million dollar range. Yeah
- 53:57Speaker 6: right now, it ain't gonna go down. He has another
- 54:01Speaker 6: good year, like Evan just talked about, he's gonna want
- 54:03Speaker 6: a contract similar or more than that. And I don't
- 54:06Speaker 6: know if I want to pay a guard that much.
- 54:08Speaker 6: I just like that's just there's just a me thing,
- 54:10Speaker 6: like I have these hang ups, like I just don't
- 54:13Speaker 6: think the gods are as important as.
- 54:14Speaker 1: The tackles you got to pick a spot. I mean,
- 54:16Speaker 1: you can't give everybody every position the highest paid. And
- 54:18Speaker 1: I mean you know for guards, you found him when
- 54:20Speaker 1: you were in the sixth round, Like you know that
- 54:22Speaker 1: it's one spot. And I always go back to the
- 54:25Speaker 1: poor right guard spot. Like if you had to pick
- 54:26Speaker 1: one position on the roster that you have to try
- 54:28Speaker 1: to figure out how to fill, like a right guard
- 54:29Speaker 1: would probably be it for me. You know, like you
- 54:31Speaker 1: can find the right guard. I feel like that to me?
- 54:36Speaker 4: Does that go? Like?
- 54:37Speaker 2: I think that that's the that's the fear, the risk
- 54:40Speaker 2: that you take with those types of things, though, are like, oh,
- 54:42Speaker 2: we'll just we'll just draft another one in the fourth
- 54:45Speaker 2: or fifth round and it will be fine.
- 54:46Speaker 4: And then all of a sudden you draft cold strange
- 54:48Speaker 4: and you're not fine, right.
- 54:49Speaker 2: Don't exactly and so like that. That is what happened
- 54:52Speaker 2: to the Patriots at the end, is that they thought
- 54:54Speaker 2: that they were just going to draft him.
- 54:56Speaker 4: But that was the funny part about it.
- 54:57Speaker 6: Bill had this philosophy of and this goes back along
- 55:00Speaker 6: in fairness to Bill, it went back a long way
- 55:02Speaker 6: and it worked for a long time, and it was
- 55:04Speaker 6: I believe it was the year Steve Hutchinson was in
- 55:06Speaker 6: the first round. That's how long we're probably going back
- 55:08Speaker 6: twenty years. Yeah, And I asked him, you know, kind of,
- 55:11Speaker 6: you know, after the press after the the press conference,
- 55:14Speaker 6: said you know, this is back when we used to
- 55:16Speaker 6: be able to sort of he get the guy in
- 55:17Speaker 6: the side a little bit and maybe ask it. And
- 55:19Speaker 6: I was like, why is it that this guy is
- 55:22Speaker 6: a generational guard and guards don't go in the first round.
- 55:25Speaker 4: And he just looked at me.
- 55:26Speaker 6: He's like, well, and he gave me a lot of
- 55:28Speaker 6: billisms and then he goes but a lot of line.
- 55:29Speaker 6: Paul is like, you can always find a guard now,
- 55:32Speaker 6: and then you know, you fast forward ten years later
- 55:34Speaker 6: and we're franchising a guard and we're given a different guard,
- 55:37Speaker 6: you know, this multimillion dollar extension. So the two of
- 55:41Speaker 6: the five most expensive guys in the roster were Shack
- 55:43Speaker 6: Mason and Joe Toney.
- 55:44Speaker 4: Yeah. Right, this is the guy who told me you
- 55:46Speaker 4: could always find a guard.
- 55:47Speaker 2: I think the guard position has changed slightly from what
- 55:52Speaker 2: it used to be because of how many good interior
- 55:54Speaker 2: pass rushers there are in the NFL, and so the
- 55:57Speaker 2: defensive tackle position is maybe fizzling out.
- 56:00Speaker 4: A little bit.
- 56:01Speaker 2: Now, this draft is not particularly good, but it has
- 56:04Speaker 2: been maybe one of the deepest and best position groups
- 56:07Speaker 2: in the league for the last let's call it half decade.
- 56:10Speaker 2: If you have you know your you know, Aaron Donald's
- 56:16Speaker 2: rushing on the other side, Well, somebody's got to block
- 56:18Speaker 2: Aaron Donald and keep them away from Tom Brady in
- 56:21Speaker 2: the Super Bowl, somebody's got to block you know, all
- 56:24Speaker 2: these guys Jalen Carter, Chris Jones, you know, go down
- 56:27Speaker 2: the list. So because of that, because of this sort
- 56:31Speaker 2: of resurgence or whatever you want to call it of
- 56:34Speaker 2: interior pass rushers, now, the really good pass blocking guards
- 56:39Speaker 2: have become more important, and so you see that being
- 56:43Speaker 2: valued a lot more. You know, guys going in the
- 56:46Speaker 2: first round of the draft now pretty routinely, Like I
- 56:48Speaker 2: think this year there's probably gonna be a couple. You know,
- 56:51Speaker 2: obviously Vega is going to definitely go in the first round,
- 56:54Speaker 2: but like Besantes might go in the first round. Also,
- 56:57Speaker 2: you know, Pregnant might go in the top forty. So
- 57:01Speaker 2: I think that that position, not saying that it's it's
- 57:04Speaker 2: still analytically probably one of the least valuable positions in football.
- 57:09Speaker 4: But when you look at it, you need it.
- 57:10Speaker 2: And when you look at it from a coaching angle,
- 57:12Speaker 2: when you have Byron Murphy and you know those guys
- 57:16Speaker 2: in Seattle coming after Drake May in the Super Bowl,
- 57:19Speaker 2: well you want to have some guards that are capable
- 57:21Speaker 2: of blocking those dudes. And it ain't easy.
- 57:25Speaker 1: It ain't easy.
- 57:25Speaker 4: We saw that.
- 57:26Speaker 1: Let's jump back to the phone, Zach new Hampshire. Hey, Zach, Zach,
- 57:34Speaker 1: Zach once twice you hear me. Hey, there you are.
- 57:39Speaker 4: What's up? Zach?
- 57:40Speaker 3: Hey, guys, thanks taking my call.
- 57:42Speaker 4: Sure.
- 57:42Speaker 12: I was just wondering if if you saw the clip
- 57:44Speaker 12: of Daniel Jeremiah talking about Jordan Tyson, he did not
- 57:48Speaker 12: seem very excited about him and his toughness, and I
- 57:52Speaker 12: know Rabel doesn't like the soft tissue injury.
- 57:56Speaker 1: Guys.
- 57:57Speaker 12: I was just wondering if he fell like pretty crazy
- 58:00Speaker 12: on Draft night, do you think the Patriots would pass
- 58:02Speaker 12: on a guy of that talent level.
- 58:04Speaker 1: It's good questions, Zach.
- 58:05Speaker 4: I don't. I don't think he'll drop very far either.
- 58:08Speaker 1: This feels like one of those things we're trying to
- 58:10Speaker 1: drum up and maybe just something that a scout came
- 58:13Speaker 1: upon during the process. And now that's getting the focus
- 58:16Speaker 1: on it right.
- 58:17Speaker 6: I just like you know, Rabel doesn't like guys with
- 58:19Speaker 6: soft tissue injuries. You know who does, John Harbaugh. He
- 58:22Speaker 6: loves guys that all the time.
- 58:24Speaker 2: Like this is also the way, and I'm not Maybe
- 58:28Speaker 2: there's some truth to it. Certainly there was some undertones
- 58:31Speaker 2: with Christian Gonzales last summer that would maybe hint towards it.
- 58:35Speaker 2: But doesn't this all relate back to things that happened
- 58:37Speaker 2: in Tennessee where the Tennessee reporters claimed that Rabel was
- 58:41Speaker 2: anti soft tissues and hamstrings.
- 58:43Speaker 6: I believe that that Rabel gets particularly annoyed with soft
- 58:46Speaker 6: tissue injuries.
- 58:47Speaker 4: I believe that wholeheartedly. Knowing Mike a little bit. I
- 58:51Speaker 4: believe that it could. I believe that all football coaches probably.
- 58:54Speaker 6: Say you missed how many games with the hamstring? I
- 58:58Speaker 6: believe every co that I ever had would be like, like,
- 59:03Speaker 6: I mean, okay, your toy, your rotator cuff, take the
- 59:05Speaker 6: year off. You pulled your hamstring in your off for
- 59:08Speaker 6: two months, Like, but it's a serious injury.
- 59:11Speaker 4: But I think I believe general.
- 59:14Speaker 2: I believe it could be true. I have not heard
- 59:16Speaker 2: any hard reporting or Mike Rabel saying.
- 59:19Speaker 6: It's true, so we're just kind of assuming, which I'm
- 59:22Speaker 6: I'm I get.
- 59:23Speaker 2: That's what we do with Jordan Tyson. There's two camps
- 59:26Speaker 2: with Jordan Tyson right now. One camp is saying that
- 59:29Speaker 2: he played through the hamstring injuries last year and played
- 59:32Speaker 2: pretty well and toughed it out for the program. The
- 59:34Speaker 2: other is saying that he's charming soft, like there's probably
- 59:37Speaker 2: the truth is probably somewhere in the middle, but like,
- 59:40Speaker 2: I think, what and this is a part of this
- 59:42Speaker 2: season that kind of bugs me a little bit. One
- 59:44Speaker 2: is anonymous scout season where like it's just you know,
- 59:48Speaker 2: and I love McGinn. I think he does a great job,
- 59:50Speaker 2: and he's the grim reaper. You don't want McGinn calling
- 59:54Speaker 2: about a player that you like or you're writing about
- 59:57Speaker 2: your player because he's about to find out all the dirt, right,
- 1:00:01Speaker 2: Bob McGinn does a great job. But the other side
- 1:00:04Speaker 2: of that is is, like, you know, all it takes
- 1:00:08Speaker 2: is some guy to get like rubbed the wrong way
- 1:00:11Speaker 2: with an interaction with Jordan Tyson, or maybe he went
- 1:00:14Speaker 2: to his pro day and Jordan Tyson didn't work out
- 1:00:16Speaker 2: at the pro day and because he slept all the
- 1:00:18Speaker 2: way to Arizona State and didn't see Jordan Tyson. Now
- 1:00:22Speaker 2: he's mad about it, And to me, that element of it,
- 1:00:26Speaker 2: I think is crazy. Like if you are upset because
- 1:00:28Speaker 2: you had to travel, which is your job, to the
- 1:00:31Speaker 2: pro day and Jordan Tyson didn't participate, and now you're
- 1:00:36Speaker 2: gonna hold that against him and like leak to the
- 1:00:38Speaker 2: media that he's like this bad dude like that to
- 1:00:41Speaker 2: me is not great. So I just take all that
- 1:00:44Speaker 2: stuff with a grain of sault. Like, like I said,
- 1:00:47Speaker 2: there's you know, Lancerline does a great job with his
- 1:00:50Speaker 2: draft profiles and his draft profile. The blurb from the
- 1:00:53Speaker 2: anonymous scouts says that Jordan Tyson played through injuries at
- 1:00:57Speaker 2: Arizona State, and then dj and McGinn saying that he
- 1:01:01Speaker 2: lacks toughness and you know there's like that sort of
- 1:01:04Speaker 2: issue with him. So which one is it?
- 1:01:05Speaker 1: You know, let's see if Danny and Daytona knows. Hey, Danny, Hey,
- 1:01:10Speaker 1: how's it going?
- 1:01:11Speaker 4: Guys? Good?
- 1:01:13Speaker 3: Hey, I just wanted to chime in. You guys have
- 1:01:15Speaker 3: some really good points today. One question, what happened to
- 1:01:19Speaker 3: fred I didn't get to hear what you guys said.
- 1:01:22Speaker 1: It was time time now he's out. He thinks we
- 1:01:24Speaker 1: think he's on vacation. We believe so, yeah, we don't
- 1:01:27Speaker 1: know where. Parts unknown.
- 1:01:29Speaker 6: It's a very private man. All of a sudden, it
- 1:01:31Speaker 6: doesn't doesn't let me know what's going on.
- 1:01:34Speaker 1: Pickleball vacation.
- 1:01:36Speaker 4: I don't know.
- 1:01:37Speaker 3: That's crazy.
- 1:01:39Speaker 6: Just I'm just letting everybody know now because I'm not
- 1:01:41Speaker 6: as pride, but I will not be on Thursday show.
- 1:01:43Speaker 4: I have a I have a thing. Oh boy, Thursday.
- 1:01:45Speaker 3: See Paul. I appreciate your courtesy. You at least tell them.
- 1:01:48Speaker 6: So Yeah, now, you guys, it's a good time to
- 1:01:51Speaker 6: call in. You won't have to talk over me, good
- 1:01:54Speaker 6: time to get involved with the show.
- 1:01:58Speaker 3: No, I just wanted to give you guys a couple please,
- 1:01:59Speaker 3: you guys some good takes, Evan. Your guy Alex and
- 1:02:03Speaker 3: his friend had some really good takes. I was listening
- 1:02:05Speaker 3: to the podcast together and did take just think of
- 1:02:10Speaker 3: say they brought up. They brought up some good points, Evan. Personally,
- 1:02:16Speaker 3: no one is talking well. I've been the only person
- 1:02:18Speaker 3: I feel like out of all the Patriot nation that
- 1:02:20Speaker 3: has been called and Paul can attest this. I've been
- 1:02:22Speaker 3: calling it all season about the damn. I know, Evan,
- 1:02:24Speaker 3: you don't like special teams and all that, but they have.
- 1:02:29Speaker 3: I told you, I've been putting Bryce Behringer on on
- 1:02:31Speaker 3: blast all seasons. Witness I called it season yeah, and
- 1:02:36Speaker 3: I put I put Behringer on blast the serious contract.
- 1:02:41Speaker 3: I don't care whether they draft or use the U
- 1:02:44Speaker 3: d F A. Your guy Alix was talking about that. Evan,
- 1:02:47Speaker 3: I would prefer them to use the U d F
- 1:02:49Speaker 3: A versus using one of our picks because we just
- 1:02:52Speaker 3: have other needs. But there's some good punchers in this draft,
- 1:02:56Speaker 3: in the draft and whatnot, I think they should do
- 1:02:58Speaker 3: that because Berenger shanked And you're to Alex's point of
- 1:03:03Speaker 3: his friend Taylor that was in the podcast. This counter
- 1:03:07Speaker 3: was phenomenal in the super Bowl. It was like a
- 1:03:10Speaker 3: video game watching him, and I think, if the Patriots
- 1:03:14Speaker 3: can find a good pinner, I mean, I'm sold on
- 1:03:17Speaker 3: the kicker. In the beginning of the season, I wasn't
- 1:03:19Speaker 3: sold on he didn't seem like he was, but he
- 1:03:22Speaker 3: clicked on towards the season as he went on, so
- 1:03:24Speaker 3: I'm sold on him. I'm sold on the long snapper.
- 1:03:27Speaker 3: They need to find upon her. And the last thing
- 1:03:29Speaker 3: I got for you guys, is I think they need
- 1:03:31Speaker 3: to get a safety. Evan to your point, you're right,
- 1:03:35Speaker 3: they don't need to get a corner this year twenty
- 1:03:37Speaker 3: twenty seven, but they need to get a safety if
- 1:03:40Speaker 3: Woodson gets hurt. I don't like the death that they
- 1:03:42Speaker 3: got behind it and the guy bired. He's good, but
- 1:03:46Speaker 3: he's older. I don't like the death that they have
- 1:03:48Speaker 3: in the safety group. So I think they need to
- 1:03:50Speaker 3: get somebody that can play both safety and corner. That's
- 1:03:53Speaker 3: all I have to say, Thanks Danny.
- 1:03:55Speaker 2: Yeah, I think with the punter quickly, like sure, just
- 1:03:59Speaker 2: do it on you like the seventh round, UDFA, Like
- 1:04:02Speaker 2: I just six four sixth round?
- 1:04:06Speaker 1: Is that really for you?
- 1:04:08Speaker 2: It just what I mean, Like I'm not don't care,
- 1:04:11Speaker 2: like I'm not trying to argue about it.
- 1:04:14Speaker 4: But oh no, I mean he was all the time.
- 1:04:20Speaker 6: And you know, I got an addition for the bad list.
- 1:04:23Speaker 6: I mean I wouldn't say every game, but a lot
- 1:04:25Speaker 6: of games.
- 1:04:25Speaker 2: Can we just just get these people a camp competition
- 1:04:29Speaker 2: at punter.
- 1:04:30Speaker 4: I think that should happen absolutely, and get.
- 1:04:33Speaker 2: Somebody that can return kickoffs so like we can stop.
- 1:04:36Speaker 4: We got a long snare in right, this long snapper competition.
- 1:04:39Speaker 4: Why shouldn't it be.
- 1:04:41Speaker 1: I mean, even Jake Bailey is still kicking around.
- 1:04:43Speaker 4: You know.
- 1:04:43Speaker 1: It's like these guys, like the Patriots move on from them,
- 1:04:45Speaker 1: but they continue to like.
- 1:04:46Speaker 2: There's only so many people in the world that and
- 1:04:48Speaker 2: punt at an NFL.
- 1:04:49Speaker 4: Which is exactly why I don't care.
- 1:04:52Speaker 6: Only somebody will punt for the Patriots next year and
- 1:04:54Speaker 6: it will not make a difference in the season. Yeah,
- 1:04:57Speaker 6: much like somebody punted last year and it didn't make
- 1:04:59Speaker 6: a difference in into.
- 1:05:00Speaker 2: The superow The only thing with kickoff returner because that
- 1:05:03Speaker 2: gets brought up a lot too. I'm with you guys,
- 1:05:06Speaker 2: but that guy has to be able to do something else, right, Like,
- 1:05:09Speaker 2: I'm not drafting somebody specifically to return kickoffs like they
- 1:05:15Speaker 2: did with Cyrus Jones when they drafted him to return
- 1:05:18Speaker 2: punts and he couldn't even do that. So can we
- 1:05:21Speaker 2: just draft somebody that plays running back that has a
- 1:05:26Speaker 2: skill set to return kickoffs and put him in in
- 1:05:30Speaker 2: drop his name into the hat, right and see what
- 1:05:32Speaker 2: comes out?
- 1:05:33Speaker 4: You know him. It's another one that I just can't
- 1:05:36Speaker 4: get worked over it. I just can't.
- 1:05:38Speaker 2: I mean, I was reading the stats, the other day
- 1:05:40Speaker 2: to Barth because he's you know, telling me how it's
- 1:05:43Speaker 2: it's an important play. The difference between the best kickoff
- 1:05:47Speaker 2: return team and the worst kickoff return team was six yards. Like,
- 1:05:52Speaker 2: so we're talking about you know, if you're counting.
- 1:05:56Speaker 4: On first, you need to get in field goal range yef.
- 1:05:59Speaker 6: Yeah, you know, Buffalo always gets like Ray Davis and
- 1:06:02Speaker 6: Buffalo always get from the back. In my face, he changed,
- 1:06:06Speaker 6: But Ray Davis, he's running as a backup. So make
- 1:06:11Speaker 6: Henderson the kick return full time and and be better
- 1:06:14Speaker 6: at it. It's not just about Henderson. So I saw
- 1:06:17Speaker 6: all these fifty yard touchdown runs that Henderson had last
- 1:06:20Speaker 6: year on offense. Yes, you mean to tell me he
- 1:06:21Speaker 6: doesn't have the ability to run the ball. No, my
- 1:06:24Speaker 6: guess is the kickoff return unit struggled because of the
- 1:06:27Speaker 6: kickoff return unit, not because necessarily the guy who was
- 1:06:30Speaker 6: doing the returning.
- 1:06:32Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean there's been need to be better. There's
- 1:06:34Speaker 2: a bunch of running backs, you know. Adam Randall from
- 1:06:36Speaker 2: Clemson is the one that always gets the most loved.
- 1:06:38Speaker 4: I love when he checks his notes. Yeah, he literally.
- 1:06:41Speaker 2: Because there's another one that I I can't remember off
- 1:06:44Speaker 2: the top of my head. I write it at the
- 1:06:45Speaker 2: very very end of their of their blurb is returns kicks,
- 1:06:49Speaker 2: like just so that I know that it's in the
- 1:06:50Speaker 2: back of my head, you know. Obviously Adam Randall is
- 1:06:52Speaker 2: the one that gets all the Quarterill Patterson comparisons and
- 1:06:56Speaker 2: stuff like that. Oh here's the other one. Him On
- 1:07:00Speaker 2: Claiborne from Wake Forest is like fourth round pick at
- 1:07:03Speaker 2: running back, but he can play running back.
- 1:07:05Speaker 6: As long as he could play running back. I have
- 1:07:07Speaker 6: no problem right a pick like that, especially with all
- 1:07:09Speaker 6: those Day three picks they have. Yeah, no issues at all.
- 1:07:13Speaker 2: Just make sure that that's his secondary.
- 1:07:15Speaker 6: And I would also submit that I would agree with Alex.
- 1:07:17Speaker 6: I think that was an area that they lacked in
- 1:07:19Speaker 6: last year. I think they kickoff return gave them very little.
- 1:07:22Speaker 4: They had Gibson, they had a couple early.
- 1:07:25Speaker 6: With Antonio Gibson, and then it kind of just dried
- 1:07:28Speaker 6: up over the second half of the season.
- 1:07:30Speaker 2: I think because in some ways, though Paulck, I think
- 1:07:33Speaker 2: that was by choice, because they decided that the sacrifice
- 1:07:38Speaker 2: of putting Trevon Henderson back there on kickoff returns when
- 1:07:42Speaker 2: they lost running back depth wasn't worth the risk it was,
- 1:07:45Speaker 2: you know, the risk wasn't worth. It might be right
- 1:07:47Speaker 2: if they had gone the whole season with Gibson and
- 1:07:49Speaker 2: Travon Henderson returning kickoffs, it probably would have looked like
- 1:07:52Speaker 2: it did at the beginning of the year.
- 1:07:54Speaker 6: Yeah, I mean they had he had a good one.
- 1:07:56Speaker 6: Gibson had a good one in the opener against that
- 1:07:58Speaker 6: I think it might have been the very first one.
- 1:08:00Speaker 6: I think the Raiders got the ball, went down and scored,
- 1:08:02Speaker 6: and they kicked off and I think Gibson took it
- 1:08:03Speaker 6: back to about midfield. Yeah, and then the next week
- 1:08:05Speaker 6: obviously he won the game, right, Yea, but that was
- 1:08:08Speaker 6: kind of it.
- 1:08:09Speaker 2: But they were like, if Gibson doesn't get hurt, then
- 1:08:11Speaker 2: they would have just had that all season long.
- 1:08:13Speaker 4: Maybe, you know, like that's a good point.
- 1:08:14Speaker 2: I think that they decided at some point that they
- 1:08:18Speaker 2: Gibson tore his acl on a kickoff return in Buffalo,
- 1:08:22Speaker 2: and they just were like, we don't want any more
- 1:08:25Speaker 2: of our running backs getting hurt on kickoff returns, So
- 1:08:27Speaker 2: no offense. But we're going to put Terrell Jennings and
- 1:08:30Speaker 2: Dearness Jostin and Eft and Chisholm and like those guys
- 1:08:33Speaker 2: back there.
- 1:08:33Speaker 1: And they kind of punted on kickoffs too, Like they
- 1:08:36Speaker 1: kind of I know that's the wrong way to put it.
- 1:08:37Speaker 1: They kind of punted on the kickoffs.
- 1:08:39Speaker 4: They cover kicks, Grady, I agree with you.
- 1:08:42Speaker 1: No, at a certain point, Memember, they were just kicking
- 1:08:43Speaker 1: him in the end zone. I mean, I know some
- 1:08:45Speaker 1: of that was game related. But let's let's grab one
- 1:08:47Speaker 1: more call before we take a break with Randy in Providence. Hey, Randy, Hey,
- 1:08:51Speaker 1: how's it going?
- 1:08:52Speaker 10: Guys? I have to say that I called it up
- 1:08:55Speaker 10: something entirely different, but real quick, I agree with the
- 1:08:57Speaker 10: earlier caller and the importance of like a good punter.
- 1:09:00Speaker 10: I mean, I think the Super Bowl highlighted it. Like
- 1:09:02Speaker 10: Michael Dixon was ridiculous in the Super Bowl from the Seahawks.
- 1:09:06Speaker 10: Three punts inside the ten, two inside the five, but
- 1:09:09Speaker 10: it was he sets up difficult you know, good punter
- 1:09:13Speaker 10: sets up difficult drives, and like, there's definitely a difference
- 1:09:17Speaker 10: in that. But what I wanted to ask is, you know,
- 1:09:20Speaker 10: there's been obviously a lot of like obsession over a J. Brown,
- 1:09:24Speaker 10: Brian Thomas Junior, et cetera. A lot of people saying,
- 1:09:27Speaker 10: you know, like we need a number one wide receiver
- 1:09:30Speaker 10: and I just like it surprises me that anybody could
- 1:09:35Speaker 10: have watched the last like twenty five years of Patriots
- 1:09:37Speaker 10: football and come to the conclusion that, like, the Patriots
- 1:09:41Speaker 10: offense absolutely needs a number one wide receiver to function,
- 1:09:46Speaker 10: Like we were just in the Super Bowl without a
- 1:09:49Speaker 10: top ten or top fifteen wide receiver. We've won several
- 1:09:54Speaker 10: Super Bowls without that, Like in my experience, and I
- 1:09:58Speaker 10: don't know you guys, if obviously watched as much as
- 1:10:00Speaker 10: I have over the last twenty five years, probably more,
- 1:10:03Speaker 10: but in my experience, like this is the system that
- 1:10:06Speaker 10: creates number one wide receivers out of guys who weren't
- 1:10:10Speaker 10: Welker Edelman guys like that. It's not a system that
- 1:10:13Speaker 10: relies upon bringing in like these top talent wide receivers
- 1:10:18Speaker 10: to function. And I just don't understand, Like, am my
- 1:10:21Speaker 10: entirely off base. I understand there's evolution in the game
- 1:10:23Speaker 10: and all that, but I mean, we've got twenty twenty
- 1:10:26Speaker 10: five years of experience of watching teams win with guys
- 1:10:32Speaker 10: whose names you didn't know prior to the season.
- 1:10:35Speaker 2: Reddy, ready, let me ask you this, because obviously what
- 1:10:38Speaker 2: happened in two thousand and three is a different game right, Like,
- 1:10:41Speaker 2: that's just not.
- 1:10:42Speaker 6: What were those are the only three Super Bowls they
- 1:10:45Speaker 6: won without a number one receiver.
- 1:10:46Speaker 2: By the way, when who was the last team that
- 1:10:50Speaker 2: won a Super Bowl without a number one guy? And
- 1:10:52Speaker 2: I say guy because it could be a tight end.
- 1:10:54Speaker 2: So who was the last super Bowl winning team in
- 1:10:57Speaker 2: the NFL that won the Super Bowl this decade? Let's
- 1:11:00Speaker 2: call it without having one of those top flight playmakers.
- 1:11:06Speaker 10: I don't have the top my head. I don't know
- 1:11:07Speaker 10: the rosters of the Super Bowl winners, but I just mean,
- 1:11:10Speaker 10: like I said, like threw out history here, Like Edelman
- 1:11:14Speaker 10: was not a top draft.
- 1:11:15Speaker 2: Pick, but Rob Van he wasn't the number one guy.
- 1:11:18Speaker 4: Rob Gronkowski was the number one receiver.
- 1:11:20Speaker 10: He was not a top draft pick either.
- 1:11:22Speaker 2: He's the top of the second round pick than God.
- 1:11:24Speaker 6: First of all, why does the number one target have
- 1:11:27Speaker 6: to be a number one draft pick?
- 1:11:28Speaker 4: No one's saying that, That's what I'm saying saying. We're
- 1:11:31Speaker 4: just saying that you need.
- 1:11:32Speaker 6: To have a lead dog on offense. And I agree
- 1:11:35Speaker 6: with Evan. I think in this day and age, yeah,
- 1:11:37Speaker 6: you could go back to two thousand and one and
- 1:11:39Speaker 6: say Troy Brown probably wasn't a prototypical number one receiver.
- 1:11:43Speaker 6: That was a that was light years ago. And the
- 1:11:45Speaker 6: way the game is played now, virtually every good team
- 1:11:49Speaker 6: has a lead dog. I don't know if it's a
- 1:11:51Speaker 6: first round pick or a third round I mean you
- 1:11:53Speaker 6: can make an argument for you don't have to take
- 1:11:56Speaker 6: sure you know, they're not all Jamar Chase and they
- 1:11:59Speaker 6: go in the top five.
- 1:12:00Speaker 2: Sure, I just yeah, I mean.
- 1:12:03Speaker 6: The other thing that's completely missing from this is Tom
- 1:12:05Speaker 6: Brady's not here anymore. So, like you can't just make
- 1:12:08Speaker 6: chicken salad out of you.
- 1:12:09Speaker 1: Know, chicken scrap, thank you.
- 1:12:11Speaker 2: That's why I compare it gets chicken teams recently that
- 1:12:15Speaker 2: don't have the greatest quarterback of all time. Now the
- 1:12:17Speaker 2: Chiefs might have the second greatest quarterback of all time.
- 1:12:19Speaker 2: But semantics like going back and you know, and I've
- 1:12:22Speaker 2: thought about this before, clearly, Like I think the twenty
- 1:12:25Speaker 2: seventeen Eagles are probably the last team that did it
- 1:12:27Speaker 2: without like a true lead dog. Now, they had a
- 1:12:31Speaker 2: good core though, Yeah, Yeah, it was aush On Jeffrey,
- 1:12:36Speaker 2: huge first half in that game. Yeah, and Zach Ertz
- 1:12:38Speaker 2: was a really good tight end you know, before Gronk
- 1:12:42Speaker 2: was you know, on his last leg the first time
- 1:12:47Speaker 2: in eighteen. But like, hey, he was still there and
- 1:12:51Speaker 2: he was still just and I don't mean like it
- 1:12:52Speaker 2: was a really good call. I don't and I don't
- 1:12:54Speaker 2: mean to for I forget his name Randy all the time.
- 1:12:58Speaker 2: It was a really good call, and it was a
- 1:13:00Speaker 2: lot to digest. But to me, it's just like the
- 1:13:05Speaker 2: punter is important, the number one wide receiver isn't. That's
- 1:13:09Speaker 2: the argument we're trying to make here, And I'm like,
- 1:13:11Speaker 2: I'm sorry if I can't get on board with that.
- 1:13:13Speaker 4: King.

- 1:13:27Speaker 2: I would say both teams, like the teams representing each
- 1:13:31Speaker 2: conference usually, And make no.
- 1:13:33Speaker 6: Mistake, Diggs wasn't a top ten or fifteen receiver in
- 1:13:36Speaker 6: the league last year, but he was their lead dog.
- 1:13:38Speaker 6: He's the reason why they got there, right in the

- 1:16:35Speaker 1: All right, it's a big day here for me because
- 1:16:37Speaker 1: it's the Front seven preview. Guys, y'all know me. I
- 1:16:39Speaker 1: love me some defense Mike.
- 1:16:41Speaker 4: I know if you ever heard of Mike's defense, I
- 1:16:43Speaker 4: do you?
- 1:16:43Speaker 1: Indeed, especially this edge class, Am I wrong? This is
- 1:16:46Speaker 1: a really strong edge class. It's a big position in
- 1:16:49Speaker 1: need for the Patriots. So this should be a fun
- 1:16:51Speaker 1: one because I think really all through these positions, I
- 1:16:53Speaker 1: think you could see them potentially taking We're talking of course,
- 1:16:56Speaker 1: defensive tackle, defensive end, edge whatever you want to call it.
- 1:16:59Speaker 1: Ev and of course off the ball linebacker, and I
- 1:17:01Speaker 1: think the best place to start is with this stacked
- 1:17:04Speaker 1: edge class. Patriot's probably not going to have a shot
- 1:17:06Speaker 1: at some of these top guys. But let's first talk
- 1:17:09Speaker 1: about David Baileyan and Ruben Bain, who, of course you
- 1:17:11Speaker 1: watch the National championship, Ruben Bain is a nightmare talk
- 1:17:15Speaker 1: some short arms. But at the same time, those guys
- 1:17:18Speaker 1: going to make a big impact, I think right away.
- 1:17:20Speaker 2: Yeah, I think Ruby Bain is probably the most powerful
- 1:17:23Speaker 2: player in this entire draft, just for cinder blockhands. Obviously,
- 1:17:27Speaker 2: the bend is something that goes around social media. Look
- 1:17:30Speaker 2: at the shin angles, look at the bend, you know,
- 1:17:33Speaker 2: all that kind of stuff is great. But just watching
- 1:17:35Speaker 2: him a little bit, you know, checking out Ramelo Height,
- 1:17:38Speaker 2: his running mate, his wing mate there on the other
- 1:17:41Speaker 2: side of Texas Tech. Both those guys, you know, with
- 1:17:44Speaker 2: David Bailey and Ramelo Height, could really get after the
- 1:17:46Speaker 2: quarterback too. So I both these schools have bookends, right,
- 1:17:50Speaker 2: I mean, we're going to talk about a Keem Mezzador here,
- 1:17:52Speaker 2: I'm sure in a second more in the Patriots range.
- 1:17:55Speaker 2: And he worked, you know, in tandem with with Rubin
- 1:17:58Speaker 2: Bain and then David Bailey has height, so some guys
- 1:18:01Speaker 2: that interest the Patriots. But I think with those two,
- 1:18:05Speaker 2: you just see both of those guys have extremely good
- 1:18:09Speaker 2: explosiveness off the football, power in Bain's case, more athleticism,
- 1:18:15Speaker 2: I would say, in Bailey's case. So it's it's a
- 1:18:18Speaker 2: good class. It's a good class.
- 1:18:19Speaker 1: I think the bigger question, Paul, what are we looking
- 1:18:21Speaker 1: for in this group? There's a lot of different options,
- 1:18:23Speaker 1: and we talk edge defensive end guys that can stand out,
- 1:18:26Speaker 1: guys that are hand down. There's a wide range covered
- 1:18:28Speaker 1: in this position group.
- 1:18:30Speaker 6: I'm having a little bit more of a hard time
- 1:18:32Speaker 6: because of you know, sort of been in that Belichick
- 1:18:36Speaker 6: frame of mind for so long. It's hard because I
- 1:18:39Speaker 6: do think Rabel and Zach Korr played the front seven
- 1:18:42Speaker 6: a little bit differently than what I have been accustomed
- 1:18:45Speaker 6: to me too over the years. So I'm having a
- 1:18:47Speaker 6: hard time sort of identifying. It used to be like,
- 1:18:50Speaker 6: you know, six or four guys that could run you know,
- 1:18:52Speaker 6: a four to six, you know, and they can be
- 1:18:54Speaker 6: Willia McGinnis types on the edge. Well, you know, as
- 1:18:56Speaker 6: Ev likes to say, those are kind of planet players.
- 1:18:59Speaker 6: There's not that many of them. So I think you
- 1:19:01Speaker 6: can open up the lens a little bit more because
- 1:19:03Speaker 6: I think the way that they played last year is
- 1:19:06Speaker 6: a little bit more conducive to different body styles. You know,
- 1:19:09Speaker 6: when you look and you're looking at some of these
- 1:19:11Speaker 6: guys and you know, I think baying in Measudor. You know,
- 1:19:14Speaker 6: even though they're they're teammates, they're really different and they
- 1:19:17Speaker 6: do a different way. Obviously Mezudor is a little bit
- 1:19:20Speaker 6: older too, So I think that's going to be the
- 1:19:22Speaker 6: key for me is trying to find do they want
- 1:19:24Speaker 6: a guy in the first round, and then you sort
- 1:19:27Speaker 6: of identify the guys that are in that area, Chris
- 1:19:29Speaker 6: and try to figure out which ones might fit best
- 1:19:31Speaker 6: for the Patriots.
- 1:19:32Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:19:32Speaker 15: I mean we talked about Messidor a little already, but
- 1:19:34Speaker 15: I think that's my overall favorite of this Yeah, I've
- 1:19:38Speaker 15: really loved in this player. I think age is a
- 1:19:40Speaker 15: little bit of a factor for him because obviously you
- 1:19:43Speaker 15: have your rookie contract going through the first round start
- 1:19:46Speaker 15: at four years, so you play four years, you're already
- 1:19:48Speaker 15: twenty nine years old. And then you're talking extension. Are
- 1:19:51Speaker 15: you talking trade value or are you talking like something
- 1:19:53Speaker 15: like that. Yeah, but I think for overall, balanced edge
- 1:19:58Speaker 15: rushers kind of what I think the PA the most.
- 1:20:00Speaker 15: I think he's a really solid, solid piece of that.
- 1:20:03Speaker 15: But he's got a great movement to get to the quarterback.
- 1:20:05Speaker 15: He's he's quick, he's i mean, his finesse ability is there.
- 1:20:10Speaker 15: You know, he's a really positive edge rusher. Again, I
- 1:20:15Speaker 15: think experience plays a big factor in that, especially playing
- 1:20:18Speaker 15: a power five ball, and Miami went deep in the
- 1:20:20Speaker 15: playoffs here, so I think that was important.
- 1:20:23Speaker 2: But that's kind of my.
- 1:20:24Speaker 6: Time if I'm just curious with with Mike and you know,
- 1:20:27Speaker 6: because Mike is the expert on defense, but I'm also
- 1:20:30Speaker 6: for you just like do you think that like I
- 1:20:34Speaker 6: think in the past Belichick would have maybe sort of
- 1:20:38Speaker 6: eliminated like a pure pass rusher that just rushes the passer. Now,
- 1:20:43Speaker 6: I don't necessarily take those guys off the board. What
- 1:20:46Speaker 6: you know, for for for for Vrabel, is he looking
- 1:20:50Speaker 6: for just a good player or a guy who does
- 1:20:53Speaker 6: one thing. If he doesn't set the edge as well,
- 1:20:56Speaker 6: you know, like that would be off the board for Bill.
- 1:20:57Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 1:20:58Speaker 6: I think this is the hardest part about this entire
- 1:21:00Speaker 6: draft class at this position is it's pick your favorite
- 1:21:03Speaker 6: ice cream flavor, right, like the vanility, like chocolate.
- 1:21:06Speaker 2: Do you like cookies in cream? Do you like coffee?
- 1:21:08Speaker 4: Do what do you like?
- 1:21:09Speaker 2: Because they have all the different types in this edgeresher.
- 1:21:12Speaker 6: Class, you got bigger guys like Zion Young or Keldric
- 1:21:15Speaker 6: falk Or two sixty five plus six six guys, smaller
- 1:21:18Speaker 6: guys like Cassius Howell obviously have great bend and explosiveness
- 1:21:22Speaker 6: and playmaking ability, but they have shorter arms and are
- 1:21:25Speaker 6: a little bit undersized for the position. So I tend
- 1:21:29Speaker 6: to lean with Rabel towards Harold Landry kind of being
- 1:21:34Speaker 6: his prototype.
- 1:21:34Speaker 2: Right, I think that Harold Andry is the type of
- 1:21:36Speaker 2: guy that he is always you know, obviously has loved,
- 1:21:40Speaker 2: has kept with him, you know that sort of thing.
- 1:21:42Speaker 2: And Harold Landry's six two fifty two fifty five, it
- 1:21:46Speaker 2: can really rush the passer, first step explosiveness, bend, fluidity
- 1:21:51Speaker 2: as a pass rusher, heady against the run. But that's
- 1:21:54Speaker 2: not really I would say, his calling card. And so
- 1:21:57Speaker 2: I look at this class in that prism of who
- 1:22:01Speaker 2: are the best Harold Landries of this class, and there's
- 1:22:04Speaker 2: plenty of them, But I would just point out you
- 1:22:06Speaker 2: know right off the top, like to me, Cashus Howell
- 1:22:08Speaker 2: is a Harold Landriy clone. I think he rushes the
- 1:22:12Speaker 2: pass or the exact same way. I think he plays
- 1:22:15Speaker 2: the run and pass with good instincts and good feel,
- 1:22:18Speaker 2: which allows him to kind of play the run at
- 1:22:21Speaker 2: a pretty high level at that size. But most importantly
- 1:22:24Speaker 2: some of the best you know, explosiveness, bend, fluidity, inside
- 1:22:28Speaker 2: out ability to get on the edges of anybody in
- 1:22:30Speaker 2: this class. And I look at him as a player
- 1:22:33Speaker 2: that because of the arm length, he might fall to
- 1:22:36Speaker 2: the Patriots at thirty one, but off the tape he
- 1:22:39Speaker 2: is a top twenty player in this class.
- 1:22:41Speaker 6: And when you pick at the end of the first round,
- 1:22:43Speaker 6: that's kind of what you're hoping to get, yep. Is
- 1:22:45Speaker 6: a guy that slips through the cracks a little bit,
- 1:22:48Speaker 6: whether it's injury, whether it's you know measurables, or whatever
- 1:22:51Speaker 6: the case may be, and you end up getting a
- 1:22:53Speaker 6: top twenty talent at thirty one because the guy's arms
- 1:22:56Speaker 6: measured an inch too short.
- 1:22:59Speaker 15: So I agree with Ash how I really like him.
- 1:23:01Speaker 15: I'm going to kind of go a different angle with uh,
- 1:23:04Speaker 15: excuse me, Kendrick. I don't know why I just bite
- 1:23:08Speaker 15: that had in my head literally a second ago. Kendrick
- 1:23:10Speaker 15: Falk run defender. He's a beast against the run. I
- 1:23:13Speaker 15: think the Patriots lacked that a little bit, especially down
- 1:23:16Speaker 15: the stretch. You saw that, especially in the Super Bowl.
- 1:23:18Speaker 15: You saw it, and I think for the Patriots it's
- 1:23:21Speaker 15: important for them to again, like I said, I think
- 1:23:25Speaker 15: it's a balanced guy. I think you need a guy
- 1:23:26Speaker 15: that can do both. And you mentioned the Harold Landry
- 1:23:30Speaker 15: komp with cash towel, and I agree with that one.
- 1:23:32Speaker 4: But you have the.
- 1:23:33Speaker 15: Ability to sort of grow Falk as a pass rusher
- 1:23:39Speaker 15: as well as he is a run run defender.
- 1:23:44Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, twenty one.
- 1:23:46Speaker 6: You know he'll play at twenty one. I actually looked
- 1:23:49Speaker 6: at him as a guy who might get kicked inside.
- 1:23:51Speaker 6: As a pass rusher, he's got I think Chris is
- 1:23:53Speaker 6: right about his run stopping ability, but that's I think
- 1:23:56Speaker 6: him is more of maybe a sub rusher inside.
- 1:23:58Speaker 4: I think the issue with.
- 1:23:59Speaker 2: Baul him and Zion Young that I have is that
- 1:24:02Speaker 2: their full time role is probably going to be playing
- 1:24:05Speaker 2: straight up over the tackle and a five technique with
- 1:24:08Speaker 2: their hand in the you know, hand in the dirt.
- 1:24:10Speaker 2: The Patriots did not really rush their rushers from the
- 1:24:13Speaker 2: five technique a whole lot. Last year they had inside
- 1:24:16Speaker 2: guys like Barmore and Milon Williams, and then they had
- 1:24:18Speaker 2: true outside guys like Kailo and Chase On and Landry
- 1:24:21Speaker 2: and Ponder and Jennings. So those guys, you know, just
- 1:24:24Speaker 2: looking at the next gen of it all are logging
- 1:24:26Speaker 2: snaps at seven and nine technique, which are all the
- 1:24:28Speaker 2: way outside the tackle. So big guys, like folk, like young,
- 1:24:33Speaker 2: really talented players and like fun players.
- 1:24:35Speaker 6: To watch, have those long levers and they know how
- 1:24:38Speaker 6: to use them. But at the same time, you know,
- 1:24:40Speaker 6: where do they play in a four man front? For
- 1:24:43Speaker 6: Mike Rabel.
- 1:24:43Speaker 2: Are they interior guys? Are they outside guys? They're kind
- 1:24:47Speaker 2: of in the middle. It's not exactly the same, but
- 1:24:49Speaker 2: I just to use a more tangible comparison, Like it's
- 1:24:53Speaker 2: kind of like how they struggled with Keon White last year,
- 1:24:55Speaker 2: Like they know this is a talented player, they know
- 1:24:58Speaker 2: they he has something to offer, but we just don't
- 1:25:01Speaker 2: really have a great role for him within the framework
- 1:25:05Speaker 2: of this defense.
- 1:25:05Speaker 1: Yeah, well, let's talk about some of the guys though,
- 1:25:07Speaker 1: that maybe you know, could bring that on the outside.
- 1:25:09Speaker 1: I just I mean you mentioned Zion Young. He's a
- 1:25:11Speaker 1: he's a popular mock draft pick, but moving you know
- 1:25:14Speaker 1: past him, our Mason Thomas and Gabe Akis are two
- 1:25:17Speaker 1: guys that to me play like Mike Rabel. I like
- 1:25:20Speaker 1: both of those guys really air on fire, aggressive kind
- 1:25:23Speaker 1: of guys.
- 1:25:24Speaker 4: You know.
- 1:25:24Speaker 1: I mean, Akus is six four, two sixty, so I
- 1:25:26Speaker 1: mean he's still in that range. Maybe not quite the
- 1:25:28Speaker 1: length of the other guys, but you know, r Mason
- 1:25:30Speaker 1: Thomas is two forty, so he's going to have that.
- 1:25:33Speaker 1: And Chris, going back to what you said, you have
- 1:25:35Speaker 1: to kind of pick what you want. I found myself
- 1:25:37Speaker 1: gravitating towards these kind of guys, guys that I know
- 1:25:40Speaker 1: has some juice. We'll find someone to stop the run.
- 1:25:42Speaker 1: I think this is Paul rubbing off on me, maybe,
- 1:25:44Speaker 1: but I really like watching those note.
- 1:25:45Speaker 6: But but that's why I brought up the whole kindundrum
- 1:25:48Speaker 6: at the beginning, because if you're looking for more well
- 1:25:51Speaker 6: rounded guys, do you think that's what Raybel wants or
- 1:25:53Speaker 6: are we starting.
- 1:25:54Speaker 4: To get away with that?
- 1:25:55Speaker 6: If you have a you know, an elite skill like
- 1:25:57Speaker 6: I mean, I think most people would say Chase on
- 1:25:59Speaker 6: last year was kind of yeah, just you know, an
- 1:26:02Speaker 6: edge rusher, you know, and he made place you know,
- 1:26:04Speaker 6: against the run too. But I think that you're looking
- 1:26:07Speaker 6: more like an R. Mason Thomas is just a guy
- 1:26:09Speaker 6: who is probably going to be a speed guy off
- 1:26:11Speaker 6: the edge. That's what he that's what he does, and
- 1:26:13Speaker 6: he does it pretty well.
- 1:26:14Speaker 4: Do you want and now great moments in history. You
- 1:26:24Speaker 4: said it's ridiculous for anybody to have that argument.
- 1:26:26Speaker 1: That's my opinion.
- 1:26:27Speaker 4: Yeah, okay, so I'm not I'm certainly not going to
- 1:26:30Speaker 4: have that argument. Just be well, you can be a
- 1:26:33Speaker 4: baby just this is being ridiculous.
- 1:26:34Speaker 8: He could be a baby about it. I'm not being
- 1:26:36Speaker 8: a baby. You said you think you called it ridiculous.
- 1:26:39Speaker 8: You're wearing depends right now. I really I think it's
- 1:26:42Speaker 8: time to have a change. And this is when you
- 1:26:44Speaker 8: you need to be changed. This is when you know
- 1:26:46Speaker 8: you really have Fred.
- 1:26:47Speaker 1: I'm gonna change you.
- 1:26:48Speaker 8: I'm gonna I'm gonna powder you up, and then I'm gonna.
- 1:26:50Speaker 1: Give you a spanking.
- 1:26:51Speaker 4: When Fred goes all Andy Hart, you know you got
- 1:26:54Speaker 4: him bingo. My work is done, and a man in
- 1:26:58Speaker 4: my position cannot be made to look That's another great moment.
- 1:27:06Speaker 1: All right, we're back And that was Eric Scalavino.
- 1:27:09Speaker 4: That was the funniest thing I ever heard him say
- 1:27:10Speaker 4: on one You know what that's from?
- 1:27:12Speaker 2: Right, Yeah, it was the only time I left at something.
- 1:27:16Speaker 1: Wow, Evan on scal crime there not unwarranted, don't warranted. Well,
- 1:27:21Speaker 1: we're back here on Patriots Unfiltered. You were actually watching
- 1:27:24Speaker 1: or listening to a clip there from Patriots Draft Countdown,
- 1:27:26Speaker 1: which if you guys want to hear draft specific stuff,
- 1:27:29Speaker 1: check out. We don't enough on YouTube.
- 1:27:30Speaker 4: I know we dabble here a little bit, but that
- 1:27:33Speaker 4: was a good draft hour.
- 1:27:35Speaker 7: That was.
- 1:27:35Speaker 1: That was and I would say the the edge and
- 1:27:38Speaker 1: defensive tackle and linebacker group that we did in that segment,
- 1:27:40Speaker 1: which I think went about forty five minutes. We probably
- 1:27:44Speaker 1: shouldn't group all those positions together, but uh, but.
- 1:27:47Speaker 4: A good show.
- 1:27:47Speaker 1: We got two more to go and then we'll be
- 1:27:48Speaker 1: live on April twenty third, Thursday, the day of the
- 1:27:51Speaker 1: draft again one to two little live show. See you
- 1:27:54Speaker 1: maybe get some people in here. You know, we're all
- 1:27:56Speaker 1: getting ready for day.
- 1:27:56Speaker 4: Are we doing that?
- 1:27:57Speaker 1: Thursday the twenty took a little happy hour, a little
- 1:28:01Speaker 1: happy hour, you know, you dressed down a little bit.
- 1:28:03Speaker 1: It's like oneish two wish it might be lazy.
- 1:28:08Speaker 4: You won't get I think I'm on ten to two
- 1:28:10Speaker 4: that day.
- 1:28:11Speaker 1: Oh so you won't get Paul's dazzling insights, but you'll
- 1:28:14Speaker 1: get Evan in Mine and maybe Matisa Crystal.
- 1:28:17Speaker 2: This has been, this has been. It's it's been a
- 1:28:20Speaker 2: stressful draft season for me.
- 1:28:22Speaker 1: Yeah, because it's condensed.
- 1:28:23Speaker 2: Because why because we were late to start.
- 1:28:27Speaker 1: Too many prospects at thirty one.
- 1:28:30Speaker 2: In I didn't go And this is I realized I
- 1:28:34Speaker 2: ain't go to the Senior Bowl because so usually, like
- 1:28:38Speaker 2: you know, the guys I saw at the Senior Bowl,
- 1:28:40Speaker 2: I don't have to do as much work on because
- 1:28:42Speaker 2: I learned all about them at the Senior Bowl. So
- 1:28:43Speaker 2: I'm kind of covered there, right If they draft one
- 1:28:46Speaker 2: of those guys didn't go to the Senior Bowl, it
- 1:28:48Speaker 2: was late to it, and then they're picking thirty one,
- 1:28:50Speaker 2: which is like in no Man's Land where it's like
- 1:28:53Speaker 2: we were talking about this before the show started, deuced
- 1:28:56Speaker 2: like I don't really love I'm trying to like fall
- 1:28:59Speaker 2: in love with somebody at thirty one and I just
- 1:29:02Speaker 2: kind of can't, Like I just don't You've been on.
- 1:29:04Speaker 1: The apps, like the Scouting ape, Like, you know, I'm
- 1:29:07Speaker 1: not right.
- 1:29:08Speaker 2: I'm not like you know, I'm not swiping left, like
- 1:29:10Speaker 2: I'm not saying no to anybody. I'm just not you know,
- 1:29:14Speaker 2: I don't have Yeah, Like, obviously I really like Brasle,
- 1:29:17Speaker 2: but I understand that thirty one is a little rich
- 1:29:19Speaker 2: to take a guy like that. So, like, I'm not
- 1:29:21Speaker 2: really in love with anybody at thirty one, and that
- 1:29:25Speaker 2: is troubling.
- 1:29:25Speaker 1: Do you ever find yourself falling in love with somebody
- 1:29:27Speaker 1: but it's not for who they are, it's who you
- 1:29:29Speaker 1: think they could be, like your projection.
- 1:29:31Speaker 4: Don't try to change him, Mike, I know they never change.
- 1:29:33Speaker 1: You know, You're like Denzel Boston.
- 1:29:35Speaker 2: You're like I.
- 1:29:36Speaker 1: You know I've gotten there before.
- 1:29:37Speaker 4: I like him, don't I do like him? I don't.
- 1:29:39Speaker 4: I don't like I don't like him anywhere there as
- 1:29:40Speaker 4: much as you too. I don't hate him. No, No,
- 1:29:43Speaker 4: I don't know. I'm not telling you like Denzel Boston.
- 1:29:46Speaker 2: Denzel Boston is the type of receiver that I hate.
- 1:29:49Speaker 2: I just like have to get over that mental hurdle
- 1:29:52Speaker 2: of he doesn't get open, but he catches everything, Like
- 1:29:55Speaker 2: I just have to kind of get over this felt like.
- 1:29:57Speaker 4: He disappeared in some of their bigger games.
- 1:29:59Speaker 2: That's probab be fair to Uh, you know, I really
- 1:30:02Speaker 2: like Casius Howell's game, but he's an outlier arm length
- 1:30:06Speaker 2: guy again, and I just don't really feel like dealing
- 1:30:09Speaker 2: with that whole thing.
- 1:30:10Speaker 4: Make for a great training camp.
- 1:30:13Speaker 1: Stop it, stop.
- 1:30:17Speaker 2: Though that this is what happens. They drink kid, we kid,
- 1:30:20Speaker 2: they draft somebody, and then everybody becomes an expert on
- 1:30:24Speaker 2: that player in like twelve hours, right, and so then
- 1:30:28Speaker 2: on Friday, you know, it's all of his shows and
- 1:30:30Speaker 2: everything are just going to be They just have a
- 1:30:33Speaker 2: thing for the short arm guys. I guess, you know,
- 1:30:35Speaker 2: like it's just going to be all that. I don't
- 1:30:36Speaker 2: really know if I want to do that. Like, you know,
- 1:30:38Speaker 2: there's no tight end really that I think is going
- 1:30:40Speaker 2: to be in that. It just I don't, you know,
- 1:30:42Speaker 2: I don't have a draft. The reputation for getting into
- 1:30:45Speaker 2: arguments before they happen.
- 1:30:46Speaker 1: The reputation precedes itself.
- 1:30:48Speaker 4: I'm not saying it's a it's an undue, unfair reputation.
- 1:30:51Speaker 4: It's it's accurate. You're ready, But he does it worse
- 1:30:54Speaker 4: than I do.
- 1:30:54Speaker 6: Like I don't want to draft you know, for a fact,
- 1:30:57Speaker 6: you don't want to draft a guy specifically because of.
- 1:31:02Speaker 2: That, because it's not yes, because it's not. They start narratives,
- 1:31:07Speaker 2: like they start a groundswell of this, and then it
- 1:31:10Speaker 2: becomes a thing. You know, they do it with every sport,
- 1:31:13Speaker 2: like they do it all the time with the Bruins.
- 1:31:16Speaker 2: And now you know, Jeremy Swayman is having this like
- 1:31:18Speaker 2: vezin a caliber season. But because Felger doesn't like paying
- 1:31:21Speaker 2: the goalie the goal you know, the goalie sucks, right,
- 1:31:24Speaker 2: So like it just just all this and.
- 1:31:26Speaker 6: Fairness to him. He doesn't say he sucks. He just
- 1:31:28Speaker 6: doesn't think there's a lot of value.
- 1:31:29Speaker 2: In it, right, But that's not how people take it.
- 1:31:31Speaker 8: You know.
- 1:31:32Speaker 6: Then then you know we get into the if they
- 1:31:34Speaker 6: can't understand it, then he's not that deep and then
- 1:31:38Speaker 6: you know, not really all that deep.
- 1:31:39Speaker 2: But it was back to football. If they draft Cash's
- 1:31:42Speaker 2: howl and that once they find out that he has
- 1:31:46Speaker 2: the shortest arms ever measured for an edge rusher at
- 1:31:50Speaker 2: the combine, you know that that's the only thing that
- 1:31:52Speaker 2: they're going to belly.
- 1:31:53Speaker 1: They might hit him on their big board today with
- 1:31:55Speaker 1: their throwing darts at the wall. It's that today. I
- 1:31:58Speaker 1: think that's happening this week. Maybe they get that, they
- 1:32:01Speaker 1: get them there and then they take the other one.
- 1:32:02Speaker 4: That crazy, Yeah, because it just.
- 1:32:04Speaker 1: Comes to the work.
- 1:32:05Speaker 2: This is the point of the whole process. All right.
- 1:32:09Speaker 1: Well, I haven't been doing a great job on the
- 1:32:10Speaker 1: emails here. I've only read one. But let's find some
- 1:32:12Speaker 1: fun emails here for our final half hour.
- 1:32:14Speaker 4: Limited to the emails.
- 1:32:16Speaker 1: No, no, huh, yeah you want to call in too.
- 1:32:17Speaker 4: No, I meant you're not doing a good job. Limited
- 1:32:20Speaker 4: to just the emails.
- 1:32:21Speaker 1: Fair enough. There's some of the comments that would agree
- 1:32:22Speaker 1: with you, Paul, try my hardest.
- 1:32:25Speaker 4: You can make fun of you. That's not right.
- 1:32:26Speaker 1: I'm joking there. They're fine. It's all compliments. But I
- 1:32:29Speaker 1: like this one from Lance and Korea that just said
- 1:32:31Speaker 1: he does know. This question has been asked before, but
- 1:32:33Speaker 1: I've never heard it. The Patriots has six Super Bowl wins,
- 1:32:35Speaker 1: they have six Super Bowl losses. Would you switch them?
- 1:32:39Speaker 1: Before you decide to switch, think about this. Grogan gets
- 1:32:42Speaker 1: a Super Bowl ring, they beat the undefeated. The Bear's
- 1:32:44Speaker 1: more undefeated. There, Uh so crreck you there?
- 1:32:47Speaker 4: But Drew.
- 1:32:47Speaker 1: But let's gets a ring against the Packers. That would
- 1:32:49Speaker 1: have been a big one for you, Paul.
- 1:32:50Speaker 4: I would definitely switch that one.
- 1:32:51Speaker 1: Drake May gets a super Bowl ring. You know, Brady
- 1:32:54Speaker 1: beats the Giants twice, the twenty seven team has an
- 1:32:57Speaker 1: undefeated season.
- 1:32:58Speaker 4: You know the downside, Brady only has Rady he has none. Yeah,
- 1:33:00Speaker 4: Brady has one with Tampa.
- 1:33:02Speaker 1: Has three super Bowl rings at the Patriots.
- 1:33:04Speaker 7: Ye.
- 1:33:04Speaker 4: Yeah, he just said if you switch the six wins
- 1:33:06Speaker 4: and six losses.
- 1:33:07Speaker 1: Right, so he would win. He would have won O, seven, eleven,
- 1:33:10Speaker 1: and seventeen, right, so he would have had those moms
- 1:33:12Speaker 1: and they were sorry moron, Yeah, morons. Uh, Belichick only
- 1:33:17Speaker 1: has three rings. There's no twenty eight to three. Joe
- 1:33:19Speaker 1: Wantana still consider the goat.
- 1:33:22Speaker 4: Is considered better than Brady.
- 1:33:23Speaker 1: It is an interesting thought experiment though. I thought immediately
- 1:33:26Speaker 1: in ninety six with you, Paul.
- 1:33:27Speaker 4: That would have been fascinating.
- 1:33:28Speaker 6: Yeah, I would, you know, that would be the only
- 1:33:30Speaker 6: that would be the only one that I would Now,
- 1:33:35Speaker 6: maybe if Drake May's career was over, I might put
- 1:33:39Speaker 6: him in that same category. But like Drew's career is
- 1:33:41Speaker 6: over and you know, he never got never got back
- 1:33:44Speaker 6: to one, you know, as the starter.
- 1:33:46Speaker 1: It's funny with the Brady ones though, because you really
- 1:33:47Speaker 1: don't have to do that much to imagine it going
- 1:33:50Speaker 1: the other way. But with the eighty five one and
- 1:33:53Speaker 1: the twenty you know, twenty five to one, though, those
- 1:33:56Speaker 1: are significant changes in the result of the game.
- 1:33:58Speaker 2: Well, if they had just to touchdown and when they
- 1:34:01Speaker 2: got the ball back down nineteen to seven and put
- 1:34:03Speaker 2: some pressure.
- 1:34:05Speaker 1: Arnold he doesn't do good with that. Uh, keeping the
- 1:34:09Speaker 1: things going here, I do you.
- 1:34:11Speaker 4: Believe I got well? Then Brady wouldn't know what were you?
- 1:34:14Speaker 1: What were you thinking there?
- 1:34:14Speaker 4: For a second point, I wasn't thinking of the three
- 1:34:16Speaker 4: losses that Brady had. I was only thinking of the
- 1:34:18Speaker 4: six wins.
- 1:34:22Speaker 1: I think Dustin here, though, reflects a lot of how
- 1:34:24Speaker 1: a lot of Patriots fans feel. I truly believe Bill
- 1:34:26Speaker 1: Belichick's last few drafts might have given fans PTSD Uh
- 1:34:30Speaker 1: what could have beens are always tough, But Mike Rabel
- 1:34:32Speaker 1: is not Bill. That's kind of Fred right. He reads
- 1:34:34Speaker 1: with that inflection. I believe he recognizes talent and the
- 1:34:37Speaker 1: need to spend money. It's critical that he's defensive minded,
- 1:34:41Speaker 1: and he's a different mind, in my opinion, much more
- 1:34:43Speaker 1: player oriented. Uh, fair enough, but I you know, ultimately
- 1:34:46Speaker 1: the end of the day, you got to make the
- 1:34:47Speaker 1: right picks, right like you just you got to put
- 1:34:50Speaker 1: your money on the table.
- 1:34:51Speaker 4: Player oriented than Belichick for sure. Yeah.
- 1:34:54Speaker 2: The thing I like about with Rabel and this isn't
- 1:34:57Speaker 2: necessarily Bill's fault, but I'm a sucker for him going
- 1:35:01Speaker 2: to the Pro days and working out the guys himself.
- 1:35:03Speaker 2: Oh yeah, And it just it just tells me. There's
- 1:35:07Speaker 2: something that tells me though about it is that, like
- 1:35:10Speaker 2: the trenches, I really trust him. I trust that he's
- 1:35:14Speaker 2: going to work these guys out. I trust that he
- 1:35:16Speaker 2: knows what to look for. I trust that he knows
- 1:35:17Speaker 2: how to scout the position because he played it and
- 1:35:20Speaker 2: played the other side of it, and like that's such
- 1:35:23Speaker 2: a big foundation, especially when you have the quarterback figured out.
- 1:35:26Speaker 2: That's such a big foundation of winning football is being
- 1:35:29Speaker 2: good on the offensive and defensive lines. And I have
- 1:35:32Speaker 2: a pretty good confidence that he's going to be able
- 1:35:35Speaker 2: to draft and not just draft, but also coach up
- 1:35:39Speaker 2: that area of the game. Like, I think that a
- 1:35:41Speaker 2: lot of the guys that they had last year outperformed
- 1:35:44Speaker 2: what we expected, and how much of that was Rabel's
- 1:35:47Speaker 2: ability to coach them.
- 1:35:48Speaker 1: I mean, if you're right, it's a great sign as
- 1:35:50Speaker 1: that's you know where I think me and Evan and
- 1:35:52Speaker 1: I both got to this point where like, just protect Drake,
- 1:35:54Speaker 1: you know, and if you're able to protect Drake and
- 1:35:56Speaker 1: you're able to get pass rush, it seems like you're
- 1:35:58Speaker 1: gonna have a pretty good foundation. Do you have that confidence?
- 1:36:01Speaker 6: Doesn't sound like I have a lot of confidence and
- 1:36:04Speaker 6: would very able put together last year. I'll tell you
- 1:36:07Speaker 6: the things that really impressed me about Mike, you know,
- 1:36:10Speaker 6: the first year that he was here and we got
- 1:36:11Speaker 6: a chance to see him every day, or a couple
- 1:36:14Speaker 6: of things. Number one, just how detail oriented he was
- 1:36:18Speaker 6: beyond you know, just the superficial. Yeah, the superficial is
- 1:36:23Speaker 6: what I was going to say, but that's probably a
- 1:36:24Speaker 6: better way to put it. And the second thing is
- 1:36:27Speaker 6: how in tune he is with offense. I was a
- 1:36:30Speaker 6: little surprised by everybody says he's a defensive mind new coach,
- 1:36:33Speaker 6: and he is. I would say that that's that's accurate,
- 1:36:35Speaker 6: but I think he had, you know, a good grasp
- 1:36:38Speaker 6: on what was going on on offense as well, So
- 1:36:42Speaker 6: I think he's more more of a well rounded head
- 1:36:44Speaker 6: coach than I kind of envisioned coming in. I've been
- 1:36:48Speaker 6: impressed with it. Yeah, I mean I I don't get
- 1:36:50Speaker 6: as you know, I.
- 1:36:53Speaker 4: Love it.
- 1:36:54Speaker 6: I don't get as wrapped up in the physical you
- 1:36:57Speaker 6: know stuff that he does. You know, Bill used to
- 1:36:59Speaker 6: go to you know what before Bill retired, you know,
- 1:37:01Speaker 6: four years before he actually got fired. He used to
- 1:37:04Speaker 6: go to the Pro Days. He used to go to
- 1:37:06Speaker 6: the Pro Days a lot. Yeah, but you know, especially
- 1:37:08Speaker 6: in Alabama running the drills. And no, he didn't lock
- 1:37:12Speaker 6: up with because he couldn't, because you don't have to.
- 1:37:16Speaker 2: No, you go out there, you test his core strengths.
- 1:37:19Speaker 4: Corse strength. He hit the term of course strength one
- 1:37:21Speaker 4: more time.
- 1:37:21Speaker 2: Yeah, his grips is does he have you know, strong hands?
- 1:37:25Speaker 2: Can he reset his hands? Can he move his body?
- 1:37:29Speaker 2: Like you're Rabel?
- 1:37:30Speaker 4: Like, so we're going to be screwed in like five
- 1:37:32Speaker 4: years when he can't do that anymore?
- 1:37:34Speaker 2: Okay, but like Rabel, you know, could Rabel go out
- 1:37:37Speaker 2: and play an entire NFL game right now? Of course not.
- 1:37:40Speaker 2: Could he give him ten snaps? Probably?
- 1:37:42Speaker 6: So, Like it's not like they're totally like it's not
- 1:37:44Speaker 6: like Bill Belichick, like there Actually he's in tremendous shape.
- 1:37:48Speaker 6: They're blocking a guy like, how much longer? I mean
- 1:37:51Speaker 6: he's fifty, I mean how much longer is it's gonna
- 1:37:52Speaker 6: be grappling?
- 1:37:55Speaker 8: I like it.
- 1:37:56Speaker 1: We didn't even see the footage him getting tossed around
- 1:37:57Speaker 1: by Will Campbell too. I guess he hit the deck
- 1:37:59Speaker 1: on that one.
- 1:38:00Speaker 2: So telling you that that stuff catches up, I would
- 1:38:03Speaker 2: love to go on this is where a tour with
- 1:38:06Speaker 2: Mike Rabel, like as a content pitch.
- 1:38:08Speaker 4: That a line in his head. It's actually going to
- 1:38:11Speaker 4: edit himself.
- 1:38:11Speaker 1: That was, well you already let one fly.
- 1:38:13Speaker 6: That was pretty good I did when Bill retired four
- 1:38:15Speaker 6: years before he got fired him.
- 1:38:16Speaker 1: What are we doing a draft here?
- 1:38:17Speaker 2: All right?
- 1:38:19Speaker 4: When he's like, where was he the Barbados.
- 1:38:23Speaker 1: Mapuh? Got a game here from Wes And Well, but first,
- 1:38:29Speaker 1: I think is a good question. I think Evan, that's
- 1:38:31Speaker 1: probably for you. Are there any potential draft prospects for
- 1:38:34Speaker 1: the Patriots that, if taken, would instantly be the best
- 1:38:37Speaker 1: player we have at that position?
- 1:38:39Speaker 2: Oh, if taken would instantly be the best player.
- 1:38:43Speaker 1: And I'm assuming might have to get up above thirty one.
- 1:38:45Speaker 2: I'm assuming we were rolling out like the obvious guys
- 1:38:48Speaker 2: like Ruben Bayne or something like that, right, I don't know.
- 1:38:54Speaker 2: I think that that's tough to say. In their range
- 1:38:56Speaker 2: of the draft. I think they're probably not in that position.
- 1:39:00Speaker 2: Maybe if like Jordan Tyson does have a Aaron Rodgers
- 1:39:05Speaker 2: esque fall and you know, falls to them at thirty one,
- 1:39:08Speaker 2: you could say he'd be the best race.
- 1:39:09Speaker 6: Is there a specific edge rusher that you think could
- 1:39:12Speaker 6: be better than Harold Landry and Draymond Jones right away?
- 1:39:17Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean that's that's a stretch.
- 1:39:18Speaker 12: No.
- 1:39:20Speaker 2: I mean, like, I think Messador and Howell could be
- 1:39:22Speaker 2: better than those guys in the long run for sure.
- 1:39:24Speaker 2: And Mezzador maybe me he's like twenty five, so he's
- 1:39:26Speaker 2: basically already. But you know he started, right, I think
- 1:39:31Speaker 2: that's true. I lost track.
- 1:39:32Speaker 4: I think he started at RGI for a few years
- 1:39:34Speaker 4: and then ended up.
- 1:39:35Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 1:39:35Speaker 2: That's the one thing that I'm not an old prospect guy.
- 1:39:39Speaker 2: I'm not. That's not usually my thing. It's the one
- 1:39:42Speaker 2: flag with Mezzador that I have a tough time with.
- 1:39:45Speaker 2: You're not wrong, but when you're picking with you, when
- 1:39:48Speaker 2: you're picking thirty one, there's always gonna You know, Howell
- 1:39:50Speaker 2: has the arms he has the age like there's gonna
- 1:39:52Speaker 2: be one thing that's probably gonna you're not gonna love
- 1:39:55Speaker 2: about a guy. An agent would be that for Mesador,
- 1:39:58Speaker 2: but I think Mezzador has it, would have a say
- 1:40:01Speaker 2: you'd have a chance.
- 1:40:03Speaker 1: These ones are kind of questions hard to say, might
- 1:40:06Speaker 1: get into the scheme nerdery of it. Maybe we can
- 1:40:08Speaker 1: avoid that, but I'll try. West continues, who of these
- 1:40:11Speaker 1: past Patriots would you start over what we have for
- 1:40:14Speaker 1: the twenty twenty six pats roster?
- 1:40:16Speaker 4: These are really hard to do, but I like I
- 1:40:18Speaker 4: like the exercises.
- 1:40:20Speaker 1: Patrick Chung versus Craig Woodson. Again very different players, of course,
- 1:40:24Speaker 1: but Patrick Chung excellent what he did. Craig Woodson still
- 1:40:29Speaker 1: growing but had a great It's hard for me to
- 1:40:31Speaker 1: say that that one because Chung would have to play line.
- 1:40:34Speaker 6: I would say Chung, but if you're gonna give me
- 1:40:37Speaker 6: Craig Woodson in the super Bowl and like he's ascending
- 1:40:40Speaker 6: to that level, but I'll stick with Woodson.
- 1:40:42Speaker 4: I do want to very well in the super Bowl.
- 1:40:44Speaker 2: He did and he's definitely a better fit for what
- 1:40:47Speaker 2: they want to do now. But I wonder if the
- 1:40:50Speaker 2: next sort of evolution of the defense is to have
- 1:40:53Speaker 2: some more of that nickel big nickel dime stuff, where
- 1:40:57Speaker 2: like a Patrick Chung type player would be perfect for
- 1:41:00Speaker 2: that kind of role. But I don't know if I
- 1:41:02Speaker 2: don't know if they feel that that that's the missing piece,
- 1:41:05Speaker 2: Like I don't know if they feel like that's their thing.
- 1:41:07Speaker 1: Yeah, Brandon LaFell versus kay Sean, butte Jojo LaFell short time,
- 1:41:13Speaker 1: not a long time. Nice.
- 1:41:14Speaker 2: You feel like Fell was better at his peak, So
- 1:41:16Speaker 2: I probably take definitely.
- 1:41:18Speaker 4: Some similarities the problem consistent too.
- 1:41:21Speaker 2: Yeah, twenty fourteen Lafel, I feel like was a little
- 1:41:23Speaker 2: bit better.
- 1:41:24Speaker 6: Yeah, And I would say that Booty gave you some
- 1:41:27Speaker 6: of the big plays, the wild plays more so Booty.
- 1:41:29Speaker 4: Would get the edge. But I think consistency, Yeah, LaFell.
- 1:41:33Speaker 1: Blunt and Dion Lewis or Remandre and Travion, I.
- 1:41:39Speaker 4: Would I would take Remonder and Travi too.
- 1:41:42Speaker 1: I think no Funch, the Blunt who was great.
- 1:41:44Speaker 2: You probably came in that one. I have a soft spot.
- 1:41:46Speaker 2: That's my that's my sweet spot is Blunted Lewis.
- 1:41:51Speaker 1: Lewis, he was another one, like a shooting star in
- 1:41:53Speaker 1: the night sky and like you know, like seven.
- 1:41:55Speaker 4: Games where he was amazing, burned quickly.
- 1:41:58Speaker 2: Yeah, that Houston playoff.
- 1:41:59Speaker 1: Game, Like I always think the Dallas three different waves
- 1:42:03Speaker 1: right Dallas touchdown he had where seven guys underneath six
- 1:42:06Speaker 1: guy went in two more. First Robert Spelaniac.
- 1:42:13Speaker 4: Different players again, different players I would take splain.
- 1:42:16Speaker 2: Yeah, definitely more assignment. Sound that's.
- 1:42:22Speaker 1: Malcolm Butler first, Christian Gonzalez. I don't think debate on that.
- 1:42:26Speaker 2: Don't do that.
- 1:42:27Speaker 1: That one's definitely Gonzales, his last one, he says. It's
- 1:42:29Speaker 1: just as Kyle Williams says, of right now a bust
- 1:42:31Speaker 1: or my way jumping the gun here.
- 1:42:33Speaker 2: History would tell you that as of right now. Yeah,
- 1:42:37Speaker 2: bus is such a strong word.
- 1:42:38Speaker 6: It is a very strong word, and people don't ever
- 1:42:40Speaker 6: want to hear it, and they get really mad if
- 1:42:42Speaker 6: you use it.
- 1:42:43Speaker 2: History would tell you that he might not work out.
- 1:42:47Speaker 4: I'm using.
- 1:42:49Speaker 6: I do not dismiss the possibility that he could, you know,
- 1:42:53Speaker 6: make the ascension next year. I'm not ruling that out.
- 1:42:55Speaker 6: But the question was baf right now? Yeah, like you
- 1:42:58Speaker 6: got very little out of him last year.
- 1:43:01Speaker 2: I think the only argument is, like, you know those
- 1:43:04Speaker 2: Steelers teams that like Antonio Brown didn't have the opportunity
- 1:43:09Speaker 2: until some of those other guys started to move on
- 1:43:12Speaker 2: and maybe feel that way that with more opportunity he would.
- 1:43:15Speaker 2: But statistically there's not a lot of precedent for a
- 1:43:19Speaker 2: guy when he catched ten passes last year, going.
- 1:43:21Speaker 4: From that to yeah, what does it? How many catches?
- 1:43:27Speaker 2: Five? Club gotta have five twenty five plus as a rookie.
- 1:43:31Speaker 2: Those are the guys that go on to have big success.
- 1:43:35Speaker 1: What trans are meant to be broken?
- 1:43:37Speaker 4: Yeah, that's what I'm not dismissed.
- 1:43:38Speaker 2: The other one, yea DeVante Adams, that's the other one.
- 1:43:41Speaker 6: Like if you had told me after the first year
- 1:43:44Speaker 6: that Nikkill Harry and I would have said, no, there's
- 1:43:47Speaker 6: nothing there, There's no there there. At least I can
- 1:43:49Speaker 6: see Kyle Williams running and separating a practice. I didn't
- 1:43:53Speaker 6: see that from nik Kill Harry. I was out on
- 1:43:55Speaker 6: nik Kill Harry like five practices in. Yeah, and you know,
- 1:44:00Speaker 6: got yelled, except that yelled at.
- 1:44:01Speaker 4: For it alone.
- 1:44:01Speaker 2: Remember the training camp where they kept matching him up
- 1:44:04Speaker 2: against Jawan Williams and just both of them weren't good
- 1:44:08Speaker 2: like Nikkil Harry actually like and then you realized that
- 1:44:13Speaker 2: it was because all of his reps were against Jewan.
- 1:44:16Speaker 1: I like this one from Boston Cream. Knowing what you know, now,
- 1:44:18Speaker 1: would you rather have had the fourth pick last year
- 1:44:21Speaker 1: or this year? For fun, Let's assume that if you switch,
- 1:44:23Speaker 1: you get thirty one last year throughout the round. So
- 1:44:25Speaker 1: I did pull up last year. Jehad Campbell went to
- 1:44:28Speaker 1: the Eagles at thirty one, but some picks in that area.
- 1:44:31Speaker 1: Josh Connery, we talked a lot about him, Josh Simmons
- 1:44:33Speaker 1: at thirty two, Maxwell Hairston by the Bills.
- 1:44:37Speaker 6: So I take Josh Simmons and being able to take
- 1:44:42Speaker 6: who so you would fourth overall. I would say that
- 1:44:45Speaker 6: fourth overall now when you could take uh francis.
- 1:44:49Speaker 4: A lot of options. Yeah, two great tackles. Well, you
- 1:44:53Speaker 4: wouldn't have Campbell, right, No, but you'd have Josh Simmons.
- 1:44:56Speaker 6: Oh, if he's great, well I would probably drove somebody
- 1:44:58Speaker 6: else you could that would be in play, right, especially
- 1:45:01Speaker 6: if you think, how do you pronounce me?
- 1:45:03Speaker 4: Is it my Malaga?
- 1:45:05Speaker 14: Yeah?
- 1:45:06Speaker 4: If you think he's that good, all of a sudden
- 1:45:09Speaker 4: you got booked in tackles, yeah, I mean he's a
- 1:45:11Speaker 4: good playing to young guys.
- 1:45:12Speaker 2: I would say the top of last year's draft was
- 1:45:15Speaker 2: maybe a little bit better in the top of this one,
- 1:45:20Speaker 2: but it's close. Neither one of the drafts is Neither
- 1:45:23Speaker 2: one of these is the twenty twenty four draft, which
- 1:45:25Speaker 2: was loaded.
- 1:45:26Speaker 6: I thought he was going to ask who would you
- 1:45:28Speaker 6: if you didn't take Campbell? Who would you have Ted
- 1:45:30Speaker 6: McMillin Bacon. Yeah, I think there were options.
- 1:45:33Speaker 2: I mean I would and I'm the biggest Campbell guy,
- 1:45:35Speaker 2: like I I you know, I.
- 1:45:37Speaker 6: Had dropping, but I would have been off of Tyler
- 1:45:39Speaker 6: Warren too. But that's you know, number four for a
- 1:45:42Speaker 6: tight end. That's that's pretty high. It's a little much.
- 1:45:44Speaker 1: Ye here's one from Brett and Lemonster. First. I got
- 1:45:47Speaker 1: to say a little disappointed in both Paul induced on
- 1:45:49Speaker 1: the quicksand question last week. The reason kids who grew
- 1:45:52Speaker 1: up in the sixties, seventies, and or eighties had trauma
- 1:45:55Speaker 1: about quicksand was because almost every show had a quicksand
- 1:45:57Speaker 1: episode their lists Online you can look up of popular
- 1:46:01Speaker 1: shows that had quicksand episodes aimed at our generation. I
- 1:46:04Speaker 1: think we got some of them, Paul, I mean one of.
- 1:46:05Speaker 4: The shows because maybe I wasn't Maybe I didn't watch.
- 1:46:08Speaker 1: Those shows right, like like those like Western shows.
- 1:46:12Speaker 4: Those I didn't watch a lot of them.
- 1:46:15Speaker 1: I was just I was just mad I missed the
- 1:46:18Speaker 1: Princess Bride because that was a pretty good one. But
- 1:46:20Speaker 1: football question, assume there are four players all ranked exactly
- 1:46:23Speaker 1: the same, literally four best players available. What position would
- 1:46:26Speaker 1: you pick? Wide, receiver, tackle, edge, or tight end?
- 1:46:32Speaker 6: I I think the receiver, tackle, tight end edge edge.
- 1:46:38Speaker 2: I would probably lean receiver with edge B like a
- 1:46:43Speaker 2: very close I think that this is the the part
- 1:46:46Speaker 2: of this draft that makes it so hard is that
- 1:46:48Speaker 2: I think that's kind of what's happening is like you're
- 1:46:51Speaker 2: getting you're drafting at a point of the first round
- 1:46:53Speaker 2: where the talent is leveling off, so like you're not
- 1:46:57Speaker 2: going to be picking there at thirty one, you know
- 1:46:59Speaker 2: where I it's like it's Kenyan Sadik and then it's
- 1:47:02Speaker 2: a bunch of other guys, Like you're gonna be picking
- 1:47:04Speaker 2: at thirty one where there's like a cluster of players
- 1:47:07Speaker 2: that are all kind of the same grade on your
- 1:47:09Speaker 2: board and you just have to kind of decide which
- 1:47:11Speaker 2: position in which player you like a little bit more.
- 1:47:14Speaker 2: I think teams, you know, they this is where their
- 1:47:17Speaker 2: advantage really comes into play. You know, they have the medicals,
- 1:47:20Speaker 2: they've met with these these kids, they've interviewed these kids,
- 1:47:24Speaker 2: like they have all of these different ways to kind
- 1:47:26Speaker 2: of break ties, whereas for people like us, we're just
- 1:47:29Speaker 2: kind of, you know, very amateur lead just looking at
- 1:47:34Speaker 2: guys and saying this is how we feel. It's harder
- 1:47:37Speaker 2: to break those ties. But that's I think that's what's
- 1:47:39Speaker 2: exactly what's going to kind of happen. Other than maybe
- 1:47:41Speaker 2: tight end like tackle, edge receiver. I think you could
- 1:47:45Speaker 2: see them having like a cluster of five or six
- 1:47:48Speaker 2: guys that are all kind of the same.
- 1:47:50Speaker 1: Matt and Devin Uk kind of along lines of what
- 1:47:52Speaker 1: we've been talking about. I just want to put my
- 1:47:54Speaker 1: name on Paul's poll. I do not want to trade
- 1:47:57Speaker 1: a first round pick Banchie Brown. I would give a
- 1:48:00Speaker 1: second and a fourth, but not a first. So Paul
- 1:48:02Speaker 1: will say, so you don't like the player, then I
- 1:48:04Speaker 1: guess not. I don't want to give a first for
- 1:48:06Speaker 1: two years max of an aging knee injured Brown a
- 1:48:08Speaker 1: couple of years ago. Yes, I would have what I
- 1:48:10Speaker 1: would love to see. Tell me if this is good
- 1:48:12Speaker 1: and realistic trade out of the first trade down a
- 1:48:14Speaker 1: few picks and around thirty five, take Zion Young or similar.
- 1:48:17Speaker 1: Then trade up from sixty five into the forties and
- 1:48:20Speaker 1: select Brazzle Dazzle. You get your young edge player and
- 1:48:23Speaker 1: your ex of the future. What say you?
- 1:48:28Speaker 4: Is that right?
- 1:48:28Speaker 1: You don't like the player and you know so?
- 1:48:30Speaker 6: No, I would say that that email is very very
- 1:48:33Speaker 6: accurate to my mindset. Like when people don't want to
- 1:48:36Speaker 6: pay what it costs for a player, I generally say
- 1:48:40Speaker 6: that you don't really like the player that much.
- 1:48:42Speaker 4: Now that doesn't mean that.
- 1:48:46Speaker 6: If this guy is worth the first round pick, like
- 1:48:48Speaker 6: until someone gives a first round pick, right, Like I
- 1:48:53Speaker 6: generally say that, you know, like Fred does it all
- 1:48:56Speaker 6: the time.
- 1:48:56Speaker 4: He goes, I'll give him a second, but not a first.
- 1:48:58Speaker 6: But then someone else gives him a first, so well,
- 1:49:02Speaker 6: the cost of that player was a first, so you
- 1:49:05Speaker 6: didn't really want them. And now those those stupid teams,
- 1:49:09Speaker 6: we get back to Hatriots fandom of the last twenty
- 1:49:12Speaker 6: five years, those stupid teams that pay a first round
- 1:49:15Speaker 6: pick for good players, Like they're just being dumb and
- 1:49:18Speaker 6: that's why they lose.
- 1:49:19Speaker 4: That's what Fred would fall back on.
- 1:49:21Speaker 6: But if you can get aj Brown for a second
- 1:49:24Speaker 6: round pick, why do you give a first if you
- 1:49:25Speaker 6: can get him for a second.
- 1:49:26Speaker 2: Yeah, I do wonder if that is part of all
- 1:49:28Speaker 2: of this with aj Brown. My guess is if the
- 1:49:31Speaker 2: Eagles had an offer they felt good about that, he
- 1:49:33Speaker 2: would have already been traded. Yeah, and I regardless of
- 1:49:36Speaker 2: the June first thing, I totally agree. I think people
- 1:49:38Speaker 2: are fixated on the June first thing far too much.
- 1:49:40Speaker 2: I think that's a convenient deadline for them now because
- 1:49:42Speaker 2: they didn't get what they wanted, right, So maybe the
- 1:49:45Speaker 2: price isn't going to be a first round pick the
- 1:49:47Speaker 2: trade that he threwout. You know, I'm typically anti hypothetical
- 1:49:52Speaker 2: trades like that because I think it's it's like you how,
- 1:49:56Speaker 2: it's very hard to predict things like that, like why
- 1:49:58Speaker 2: is a team trading up? Why are they trading BacT Like,
- 1:50:00Speaker 2: it's not Madden, right, we can't just like force trades.
- 1:50:03Speaker 2: But that is realistically in the ballpark of something that
- 1:50:08Speaker 2: could happen.
- 1:50:09Speaker 4: When you call him brazzle dazzle on the spot, Yeah,
- 1:50:14Speaker 4: do you know the candy razzles? You ever have those razzles?
- 1:50:16Speaker 1: They kind of start off the.
- 1:50:19Speaker 6: Chalky, but they would they would come in, they would
- 1:50:21Speaker 6: deliver in the end.
- 1:50:22Speaker 2: I would love to know what they think of Zion Young.
- 1:50:25Speaker 2: That's one, you know, he has some off field issues
- 1:50:27Speaker 2: in his past and some stuff, you know, legal troubles
- 1:50:31Speaker 2: in the past, and that's a guy that's either totally
- 1:50:33Speaker 2: their type or not their type at all, and there's
- 1:50:35Speaker 2: like no middle ground of you know that really, So
- 1:50:38Speaker 2: I'd like to know if I need to keep him
- 1:50:40Speaker 2: on the big board or not, because they have a red.
- 1:50:43Speaker 4: Flag on Evan's wondering, Yeah, can I take this guy off?
- 1:50:48Speaker 1: Like twice?
- 1:50:49Speaker 2: It's if you like him, it's a struggle.
- 1:50:51Speaker 1: It's probably good the Fred isn't here today, though. There's
- 1:50:53Speaker 1: a lot of pushback on Fred's take on a Vinitary.
- 1:50:56Speaker 1: This is Paul and the Colony saying Fred's take on
- 1:50:59Speaker 1: Vinitary over Gronk is silly. I'm sorry he's not there
- 1:51:02Speaker 1: to defend himself, but that is the same kind of
- 1:51:04Speaker 1: dumb thinking that kept Belichick out of the Hall of Fame.
- 1:51:07Speaker 1: And and Paul is not the first person to point
- 1:51:09Speaker 1: out perhaps that Fred has a double standard for Bill
- 1:51:13Speaker 1: being kept out of the Hall of Fame and how
- 1:51:14Speaker 1: ridiculous that is. But then going ahead and stumping for
- 1:51:19Speaker 1: vin Terry the last thing he asked, is there any
- 1:51:22Speaker 1: update on Polk's health? Do you think he would be
- 1:51:24Speaker 1: kidding for a job this summer maybe with the Saints.
- 1:51:26Speaker 1: Paul he was traded last year. Was he released? Did
- 1:51:29Speaker 1: they release?
- 1:51:31Speaker 14: Yeah?
- 1:51:32Speaker 1: Yeah, no, no Jalen Polk. No chance for Paul to
- 1:51:34Speaker 1: kick me around on him anymore. I thought he had
- 1:51:36Speaker 1: a good camp.
- 1:51:37Speaker 6: I find it amazing, like Jalen Polk may as well
- 1:51:39Speaker 6: have been a Patriot five years.
- 1:51:42Speaker 4: It feels he was in training camp last year.
- 1:51:44Speaker 14: Yeah.
- 1:51:44Speaker 1: Yeah, Now he was Hurtle, wasn't he all?
- 1:51:47Speaker 6: Like he was on I think to open camp and
- 1:51:50Speaker 6: he came back and he caught a touchdown and all
- 1:51:52Speaker 6: of you told me how wrong I was.
- 1:51:55Speaker 4: That was one of those guys.
- 1:51:56Speaker 2: And I did the same thing with Taekwon, and I
- 1:51:59Speaker 2: kicked myself for it every time. But I didn't really
- 1:52:03Speaker 2: like them in the draft, and if you remember, my
- 1:52:07Speaker 2: reaction on the draft show was kind of subdued when
- 1:52:12Speaker 2: they picked up.
- 1:52:12Speaker 6: I remember, and then you did the friend but it's
- 1:52:15Speaker 6: not just back the next day and you were like,
- 1:52:18Speaker 6: isn't this great?
- 1:52:21Speaker 4: It's just funn of you.
- 1:52:22Speaker 2: I've been there a thousands It's not just the fandom
- 1:52:24Speaker 2: side of it, though it's also like, well, I'm not
- 1:52:26Speaker 2: actually a scout, so like, you know, like if they
- 1:52:29Speaker 2: if they think that this guy can play, then they
- 1:52:32Speaker 2: have a lot more information and knowledge than I do
- 1:52:34Speaker 2: about this. So they probably could be right and I
- 1:52:37Speaker 2: could be wrong. So you like don't have the conviction,
- 1:52:40Speaker 2: you know, like the same thing happened with to kill Harry.
- 1:52:42Speaker 2: Like I was like, I'm not going to tell Bill Belichick.
- 1:52:44Speaker 4: I really didn't like to kill Harry.
- 1:52:46Speaker 6: But I remember being on this show and I'm sure
- 1:52:47Speaker 6: people could find clips and throw them in my face
- 1:52:50Speaker 6: and say, you know, it's a big, strong guy on
- 1:52:52Speaker 6: the outside contested catch. I didn't like them, but you
- 1:52:56Speaker 6: sort of talk yourself into them. And part of it, frankly, is,
- 1:52:59Speaker 6: you know, we just paid, and you know we don't
- 1:53:02Speaker 6: want to sit here and trash the players the team
- 1:53:04Speaker 6: just took. Now if they don't perform, we're going to
- 1:53:06Speaker 6: tell you they're not performing. Yeah, but I didn't like
- 1:53:09Speaker 6: either one of those and the other receiver you know
- 1:53:11Speaker 6: this is going back always was Aaron Dobson.
- 1:53:13Speaker 4: I just was not on board similar and couldn't get open.
- 1:53:17Speaker 2: Yeah, but I I feel like that that you know,
- 1:53:21Speaker 2: Polk was a guy that I was like, I don't know,
- 1:53:23Speaker 2: and then I was, you know, talked myself into it,
- 1:53:26Speaker 2: and then he had.
- 1:53:26Speaker 4: A I thought I was with Dues.
- 1:53:28Speaker 2: I thought he had a solid I liked training camp.
- 1:53:30Speaker 6: I will say there were some I liked sometimes where
- 1:53:33Speaker 6: Thornton in training camp and he did this two different training.
- 1:53:37Speaker 2: Because you can't touch him.
- 1:53:38Speaker 4: Yeah, absolutely, yeah, absolutely.
- 1:53:40Speaker 6: Now I didn't fall in love with the player in
- 1:53:42Speaker 6: training camp, but I did think that he showed some
- 1:53:44Speaker 6: signs of making some plays down the field. And I
- 1:53:47Speaker 6: don't know, maybe I'm wrong, maybe there's something there.
- 1:53:49Speaker 2: And you know, I remember last summer there was a
- 1:53:52Speaker 2: ground swell out of Kansas City about how great Taekwon
- 1:53:55Speaker 2: looked in training camp, and I was like, oh, it's
- 1:53:56Speaker 2: training camp Taekwon. It's five football. Like he's a guy
- 1:53:59Speaker 2: that runs a four two on.
- 1:54:02Speaker 6: The niche that he he can be in and you know,
- 1:54:04Speaker 6: with with Mahomes' ability, but you know, and maybe he
- 1:54:07Speaker 6: would have done this with Drake may too, But Mahomes'
- 1:54:10Speaker 6: ability to go out and like make a make a
- 1:54:12Speaker 6: play out of nothing and throw the ball at country mile. Yeah,
- 1:54:15Speaker 6: twenty times a year, he's going to catch one like
- 1:54:18Speaker 6: I don't think. I don't know what he ended up
- 1:54:19Speaker 6: with numbers, but I can't imagine he had any volume.
- 1:54:21Speaker 2: It wasn't anything crazy, but it was much better than
- 1:54:23Speaker 2: what it all.
- 1:54:24Speaker 6: Big places right and then and like you see them
- 1:54:28Speaker 6: because you know they're long catches and touchdowns and stuff.
- 1:54:32Speaker 4: But he couldn't have had more than thirty catches. I
- 1:54:34Speaker 4: wouldn't know when did.
- 1:54:35Speaker 1: They how did they get rid of him? Did they
- 1:54:36Speaker 1: cut him at cutdowns?
- 1:54:37Speaker 4: Or was did he make it to the end?
- 1:54:39Speaker 1: I'm forgetting exactly.
- 1:54:40Speaker 2: Yeah, he was on the team for a little while,
- 1:54:42Speaker 2: then he was unhappy and then he was bouncing around.
- 1:54:46Speaker 6: Yeah, you know it's like him and who was uh born?
- 1:54:50Speaker 6: I think ended up going right at the around the
- 1:54:52Speaker 6: time of final cuts.
- 1:54:54Speaker 1: That's what's been interesting to me to kind of watch
- 1:54:56Speaker 1: and Mapoo's the latest example is, you know how it
- 1:55:00Speaker 1: was kind of systematically slowly moved the old regime guys out,
- 1:55:04Speaker 1: you know, consistently. You know, it wasn't right out of
- 1:55:07Speaker 1: the shoot just everybody's gone. But you know, even this offseason,
- 1:55:10Speaker 1: you've seen them.
- 1:55:11Speaker 4: Move on from a couple of pretty fast.
- 1:55:12Speaker 1: You know, I mean, I may, I mean, I guess
- 1:55:14Speaker 1: I have nothing to compare it to.
- 1:55:15Speaker 6: Me Bentley Andrews. I mean there were guys that went
- 1:55:18Speaker 6: right away. Yeah, and it's kind of continued, yeah even today.
- 1:55:23Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:55:23Speaker 5: Right.
- 1:55:23Speaker 2: I was thinking about it a little bit, and I
- 1:55:26Speaker 2: think what I like about it is that they had
- 1:55:28Speaker 2: their convictions about these players. We kind of knew about
- 1:55:32Speaker 2: it last summer to buy Anthony Jennings, that they they
- 1:55:35Speaker 2: didn't these weren't really their types of players, and they
- 1:55:37Speaker 2: didn't let the success they had last season like deter
- 1:55:42Speaker 2: their plan, you know.
- 1:55:43Speaker 4: And I think nineteen catches yeah, yeah, I'm on TDS.
- 1:55:47Speaker 1: He had a couple of three.
- 1:55:48Speaker 6: Yeah, he averaged twenty three yards to catch one, nineteen
- 1:55:50Speaker 6: for four thirty eight.
- 1:55:52Speaker 1: I can't remember like all of them. It's just all
- 1:55:54Speaker 1: my homes, like roll out, nobody's open time, come on.
- 1:55:57Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:55:57Speaker 1: But I mean seeing that though, That's why I'm trying
- 1:55:59Speaker 1: to remember back because given his skill set and his side,
- 1:56:03Speaker 1: like I just like, there wasn't anything there with Drake,
- 1:56:05Speaker 1: like I'm misremembering, but like on paper at least with
- 1:56:07Speaker 1: what because last summer we weren't thinking of Drake as
- 1:56:10Speaker 1: like an MVP candidate. You know, you're thinking, well, he's
- 1:56:12Speaker 1: gonna find his way. But you know, when you look
- 1:56:15Speaker 1: at that receiving core, he really had a you know,
- 1:56:17Speaker 1: kind of a unique sense a set of skills.
- 1:56:19Speaker 2: I think that the part about Taekwon that was just killers.
- 1:56:23Speaker 2: He was just way over drafted. Like if they had
- 1:56:25Speaker 2: drafted Taekwon like early on day three, he got it
- 1:56:27Speaker 2: because he ran the four two eighty, just got drafted too,
- 1:56:30Speaker 2: three rounds ahead of where he was supposed to go.
- 1:56:32Speaker 2: And that draft, that's, in my opinion, is sort of
- 1:56:37Speaker 2: the takeaway from that twenty twenty two draft is everybody
- 1:56:39Speaker 2: got drafted two or three rounds ahead of where they
- 1:56:42Speaker 2: should have gone. And so it wasn't that the players
- 1:56:45Speaker 2: were necessarily bad scouts. They just they should have drafted
- 1:56:50Speaker 2: cool Strange in the third round instead of in the
- 1:56:52Speaker 2: first round. And they should have drafted Taekwon early on
- 1:56:55Speaker 2: day three instead of the second round. And if they
- 1:56:57Speaker 2: had done that and they had actually drafted you know,
- 1:57:00Speaker 2: good players in the first and second round instead, then
- 1:57:03Speaker 2: that whole draft, like if Cole Strange was like a
- 1:57:05Speaker 2: third or fourth round pick, and none of us think
- 1:57:07Speaker 2: of it as like this monumental.
- 1:57:09Speaker 4: Right, right, bus it's just such a mess.
- 1:57:11Speaker 1: What a mess like that? Just then you realize you're
- 1:57:13Speaker 1: in kind of this cycle where you can't break out
- 1:57:16Speaker 1: of it, and now you're reaching for needs and this
- 1:57:18Speaker 1: guy didn't work out. And the other part of it
- 1:57:21Speaker 1: was just nobody really developed over those last few seasons.
- 1:57:23Speaker 1: You didn't really see the guys.
- 1:57:24Speaker 6: That's the part that I don't think gets anywhere near
- 1:57:27Speaker 6: the amount of attention it should.
- 1:57:28Speaker 4: The development part. You know, we'll see if it changes now,
- 1:57:31Speaker 4: you know, Mike.
- 1:57:31Speaker 6: I mean I evn't made the point about how you know,
- 1:57:34Speaker 6: these guys played really well, better than a lot of
- 1:57:36Speaker 6: cases last year, better than expected. I put that on
- 1:57:39Speaker 6: the development. Yeah, that's not just because the guys are
- 1:57:41Speaker 6: better players than we thought they were. That's because the
- 1:57:43Speaker 6: coaches are getting something out of them. The other thing
- 1:57:46Speaker 6: that I will never forget with the Thornton pick is
- 1:57:49Speaker 6: the three receivers that went right after him, and two
- 1:57:52Speaker 6: of those three guys hit Pierce Pickings and Piers.
- 1:57:56Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:57:56Speaker 6: So like you know, sky Moore is the only one
- 1:57:58Speaker 6: that really didn't turn into anything, you know, substantial.
- 1:58:01Speaker 4: That's always going to.
- 1:58:02Speaker 6: Be there when you pick a guy conky, you know,
- 1:58:05Speaker 6: and it's and it's a direct comparison at the same position,
- 1:58:08Speaker 6: and those guys are you know productive.
- 1:58:11Speaker 4: That's that's tough to overcome.
- 1:58:12Speaker 1: It just goes back like these guys don't even know
- 1:58:14Speaker 1: what they're doing. Like not to say they don't know
- 1:58:15Speaker 1: what they're doing, but like the hit rate in the
- 1:58:17Speaker 1: NFL for the actual scouts that have all the information,
- 1:58:20Speaker 1: have all of the uh, you know, what their coaches
- 1:58:23Speaker 1: want and need for their and even still full time
- 1:58:26Speaker 1: jobs doing nothing. But this year round people who watch
- 1:58:28Speaker 1: them in person, and they still have misses.
- 1:58:32Speaker 2: Like this human beings, right, like you can't you don't
- 1:58:34Speaker 2: know what's going on between the years. You don't know
- 1:58:36Speaker 2: what the you know, all those different types of things.
- 1:58:38Speaker 2: But I think in that era, you know, Paul made
- 1:58:41Speaker 2: the joke about Bill retiring four years before he actually
- 1:58:44Speaker 2: retired or was fired, and it was a little bit snarky,
- 1:58:48Speaker 2: but at the same time, like I don't know if
- 1:58:51Speaker 2: the coaching staff was putting as much into player development
- 1:58:54Speaker 2: then as it was at different points of the dynasty.
- 1:58:58Speaker 2: Then you get the Drod Mayo year, which is no offense,
- 1:59:01Speaker 2: a waste kind of for a lot of player development,
- 1:59:03Speaker 2: and now you have a third coaching staff, so like
- 1:59:05Speaker 2: a lot of these guys have been on three different
- 1:59:08Speaker 2: coaching staffs in a period of three or four years,
- 1:59:11Speaker 2: and it's different systems, it's different languages, it's different expectations,
- 1:59:15Speaker 2: it's different techniques like and so that revolving door starts
- 1:59:20Speaker 2: to affect player development. So hopefully now that they have
- 1:59:24Speaker 2: you know, Mike Vrabel here for a long period of
- 1:59:26Speaker 2: time and McDaniels is coming back, and Zach Kor is
- 1:59:29Speaker 2: coming back, you're just you're gonna be plugging in play
- 1:59:32Speaker 2: and you know you're going to be developing guys again.
- 1:59:33Speaker 1: Well, Paul said Craig Woodson. I mean, it's just such
- 1:59:35Speaker 1: a great example of a player who played a lot,
- 1:59:37Speaker 1: you know, maybe wasn't really standing out much. I mean,
- 1:59:39Speaker 1: he's out there, but then at the end you started
- 1:59:41Speaker 1: to make him. He start to see him make plays,
- 1:59:43Speaker 1: and you haven't seen that in recent And I would.
- 1:59:45Speaker 6: Say, like there was probably good half of the season.
- 1:59:48Speaker 6: I would be like, yeah, Craig Woodson starts every game,
- 1:59:50Speaker 6: but he's a guy. He's a guy who starts. He's
- 1:59:52Speaker 6: not a starter. That wasn't my opinion of him. As
- 1:59:56Speaker 6: the season progressed and into the playoffs, I you know
- 1:59:59Speaker 6: he was showing up more and more, and I thought
- 2:00:01Speaker 6: in the postseason he was one of the better defensive players.
- 2:00:03Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, Agre sure. Well, one last question, I don't
- 2:00:06Speaker 1: know if I can answer in less than a minute,
- 2:00:07Speaker 1: but Mike, do you have any stories about roughing youth
- 2:00:09Speaker 1: hockey games? Any rowdy parents or kids or coaches?
- 2:00:11Speaker 4: Yes?
- 2:00:14Speaker 1: I might save those for Thursday. When I blew, I
- 2:00:17Speaker 1: blew a goal call. I blew a goal call, and
- 2:00:19Speaker 1: I thought this team from New York was gonna like
- 2:00:21Speaker 1: call from my head. It was a terrible call. There'll
- 2:00:23Speaker 1: be a tease for Thursday, though, so we'll get back
- 2:00:26Speaker 1: to you on that one then. So I think we're
- 2:00:28Speaker 1: gonna wrap it up, guys. Yeah, thank everybody for tuning in.
- 2:00:31Speaker 1: Got Patriots Draft Countdown. It's gonna come out tomorrow as well.
