Transcript
- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean. Here it is Thursday.
- 0:16It's the 23rd of October. Thank you for inviting me into
- 0:19your day so that you and I can touch base with our God through
- 0:24His Word and hear what He has to share with us today.
- 0:28And reading through books like Romans, these New Testament
- 0:31epistles, it's not like reading the stories of the Old
- 0:34Testament, is it? It's not like we're following
- 0:36along the narrative. And it's all easy to follow.
- 0:39But sometimes these chapters can feel really dense with all of
- 0:43these sentences that we hear often in isolation, but put
- 0:47together, boy, it is a lot to take in.
- 0:50So rather than feeling bad or berating yourself or thinking I
- 0:55need to capture all of this in this moment, just let these
- 0:59words wash over you. And if something from the Bible
- 1:03reading just speaks to you, then just hold on to that one thing
- 1:06and reflect on that through the day.
- 1:08We read together everyday, friends, so that this can
- 1:11punctuate our days, so that God's words can flow through our
- 1:16ears into our hearts, and bit by bit it can transform us.
- 1:21So choose the bit that you need for your own transformation and
- 1:25let that be yours today. Holy Spirit, let us find your
- 1:30truth in this reading to shape us to be more like you.
- 1:37Let's do it, friends. Let's read Romans chapter 14.
- 1:50Accept other believers who are weakened faith and don't argue
- 1:54with them about what they think is right or wrong.
- 1:57For instance, one person believes it's all right to eat
- 2:00anything, but another believer with a sensitive conscience will
- 2:04eat only vegetables. Those who feel free to eat
- 2:08anything must not look down on those who don't, And those who
- 2:11don't eat certain foods must not condemn those who do, for God
- 2:16has accepted them. Who are you to condemn someone
- 2:19else's servants? Their own master will judge
- 2:22whether they stand or fall, and with the Lord's help they will
- 2:26stand and receive His approval. In the same way, some think one
- 2:32day is more holy than another day, while others think every
- 2:36day is alike. You should each be fully
- 2:38convinced that whichever day you choose is acceptable.
- 2:43Those who worship the Lord on a special day do it to honour Him.
- 2:47Those who eat any kind of food do so to honour the Lord, since
- 2:51they give thanks to God before eating, and those who refuse to
- 2:56eat certain foods also want to please the Lord and give thanks
- 2:59to God. For we don't live for ourselves
- 3:02or die for ourselves. If we live, it's to honour the
- 3:06Lord, and if we die, it's to honour the Lord.
- 3:10So whether we live or die, we belong to the Lord.
- 3:15Christ died and rose again for this very purpose, to be Lord
- 3:20both of the living and of the dead.
- 3:23So why do you condemn another believer?
- 3:26Why do you look down on another believer?
- 3:28Remember, we will all stand before the judgement seat of
- 3:32God. For the Scriptures say, as
- 3:34surely as I live, says the Lord, every knee will bend to me and
- 3:40every tongue will declare allegiance to God.
- 3:44Yes, each of us will give a personal account to God.
- 3:48So let's stop condemning each other.
- 3:51Decide instead to live in such a way that you will not cause
- 3:54another believer to stumble and fall.
- 3:57I know and am convinced on the authority of the Lord Jesus that
- 4:02no food in and of itself is wrong to eat.
- 4:06But if someone believes it is wrong, then for that person it
- 4:09is wrong. And if another believer is
- 4:12distressed by what you eat, you are not acting in love if you
- 4:16eat it. Don't let your eating ruin
- 4:19someone for whom Christ died. Then you will not be criticised
- 4:24for doing something you believe is good.
- 4:27For the Kingdom of God is not a matter of what we eat or drink,
- 4:31but of living a life of goodness and peace and joy in the Holy
- 4:36Spirit. If you serve Christ with this
- 4:39attitude, you will please God and others will approve of you
- 4:43too. So then, let us aim for harmony
- 4:47in the church and try to build each other up.
- 4:51Don't tear apart the work of God over what you eat.
- 4:54Remember, all foods are acceptable, but it is wrong to
- 4:58eat something if it makes another person stumble.
- 5:01It is better not to eat meat or drink wine or do anything else
- 5:05if it might cause another believer to stumble.
- 5:09You may believe there's nothing wrong with what you were doing,
- 5:12but keep it between yourself and God.
- 5:15Blessed are those who don't feel guilty for doing something they
- 5:17have decided is right. But if you have doubts about
- 5:21whether or not you should eat something, you are sinning.
- 5:24If you go ahead and do it for you are not following your
- 5:27convictions. If you do anything you believe
- 5:31is not right, you are sinning. Jesus, you want us to be unified
- 5:47together. You want us to build each other
- 5:51up and not criticise each other for being different.
- 5:57You know that latched deep, hooked deep into our sinful
- 6:02nature is this way of criticism, is this way of seeing how others
- 6:07are different and not liking it. Lord, I pray that you in your
- 6:14transformation of us and in Your Holy Spirit's work in us, that
- 6:19we would not focus on the differences between us, but that
- 6:23we would see each other in the light of You.
- 6:26But we are all fellow sons and daughters of a living God.
- 6:30Brothers and sisters of our loving Saviour, Thank you for
- 6:37all you have done for us. Thank you for the love you have
- 6:40for us. Thank you for the lives you give
- 6:42us, the family, the friends, the good things that you bless our
- 6:46lives with. Our Lord, I pray that we would
- 6:50share them and enjoy them in community so that together we
- 6:55can spur each other on toward You and toward a life of service
- 6:59of Your Kingdom. Rather than following the
- 7:02world's way of pulling down those that are different.
- 7:06We commit ourselves to You. We offer ourselves to You as the
- 7:09living sacrifice that can Live Today in submission to You and
- 7:14your ways. We ask this in your name, Jesus,
- 7:18Amen.
