- 0:15Speaker 1: keeping love at a distance. Can a shattered heart be
- 0:18Speaker 1: your doorway to your greatest love story? Robin will give
- 0:21Speaker 1: you practical tools that can be used to heal the
- 0:23Speaker 1: past and help you to safely love again. And now
- 0:27Speaker 1: today's come back to Love.
- 0:31Speaker 2: Hello everyone, and welcome to come Back to Love. We

- 0:45Speaker 2: and this is come Back to Love. I'm Kmet, I
- 0:49Speaker 2: am Robin Vogel. I'm a psychotherapist, a love an intimacy coach,
- 0:53Speaker 2: and the author of the new book come Back to Love,
- 0:56Speaker 2: a Path to Healing that was published earlier this year
- 1:00Speaker 2: buy Coolar Books and you can find it anywhere that
- 1:02Speaker 2: you buy books online. For over twenty years, I've been
- 1:06Speaker 2: helping people do what I had to learn to do myself.
- 1:09Speaker 2: Heal the past, heal my heart, understand the patterns that
- 1:13Speaker 2: were created because of past trauma and create the kind
- 1:17Speaker 2: of love for myself that was real, and create love
- 1:21Speaker 2: in the world that I was so desiring after all
- 1:26Speaker 2: of those years of healing. Not the love that looks
- 1:29Speaker 2: good on paper, not the love that feels like a
- 1:31Speaker 2: roller coaster that you just can't get off, but the
- 1:35Speaker 2: love that feels like finally, this, this is what I
- 1:39Speaker 2: have been yearning for. Welcome, Welcome to my new radio show,
- 1:46Speaker 2: Come Back to Love and Again. We are live on
- 1:49Speaker 2: km e T every Thursday at one thirty pm Pacific
- 1:53Speaker 2: and four thirty pm Eastern time. You can also listen
- 1:56Speaker 2: to this show on all podcast platforms. Thank you so
- 2:01Speaker 2: much for tuning in. Today. Our topic is beyond divorce.
- 2:06Speaker 2: Beyond divorce, the work that I do is supporting anyone
- 2:11Speaker 2: who has gone through a major life transition, whether that
- 2:15Speaker 2: be a heartbreak or a loss, divorce, separation, even just
- 2:21Speaker 2: a major life transition that you're in like a new identity.
- 2:25Speaker 2: Sometimes people go through what we might call a midlife
- 2:29Speaker 2: crisis or a mid life I'd like to call it
- 2:31Speaker 2: a mid life transition, and when that happens, there are
- 2:36Speaker 2: sometimes unforeseeable losses that come to the surface. So although
- 2:42Speaker 2: today's topic is beyond divorce. If you haven't been divorced,
- 2:46Speaker 2: but you've had a major loss or again a major
- 2:49Speaker 2: heartbreak or transition in your life, this show is for
- 2:52Speaker 2: you today. So as we begin to dive into this
- 2:58Speaker 2: topic of beyond divorce, we're actually going to look at
- 3:01Speaker 2: let me say this first, We're going to look at identity.
- 3:04Speaker 2: We're going to look at how as humans we sometimes
- 3:08Speaker 2: hold on to things unnecessarily. We overidentify with our pasts,
- 3:13Speaker 2: and this keeps us stuck. Stuck. Even though you might
- 3:19Speaker 2: be doing therapy, even though you've done tons of coaching,
- 3:22Speaker 2: even though you've spent thousands of dollars if you have,
- 3:26Speaker 2: even though you've cried your eyes out a million times
- 3:29Speaker 2: to your friends, even though it's been years, all these reasons,
- 3:33Speaker 2: we can still be really stuck in the past. And
- 3:39Speaker 2: some people ask me, so I want to address this first,
- 3:41Speaker 2: like how do I know that I'm stuck? Like? How
- 3:44Speaker 2: do I know that I'm not moving forward? Seems like
- 3:48Speaker 2: I am. I've done a lot of work, I have
- 3:49Speaker 2: a new relationship, but it's not so great. It really
- 3:53Speaker 2: resembles the past. Again, I feel like I'm repeating a pattern. Well,
- 3:56Speaker 2: stop right there, that is the way to know that
- 3:59Speaker 2: you're stuck in the past. Sometimes you're not moving forward,
- 4:04Speaker 2: and you're just aware that I'm not moving forward in life,
- 4:07Speaker 2: in work, in relationship, maybe in your health and wellbeing.
- 4:12Speaker 2: Sometimes you do notice that you're repeating patterns over and
- 4:15Speaker 2: over again, and you keep attracting the same kind of person.
- 4:18Speaker 2: You keep having short relationships and ending them, or maybe
- 4:21Speaker 2: you have a couple of years of relationship and then
- 4:23Speaker 2: they're over and you're just frustrated and confused and stuck.
- 4:31Speaker 2: Sometimes people say, my heart isn't open. I just don't
- 4:35Speaker 2: feel like my heart is open. If you notice that
- 4:38Speaker 2: about yourself, for one thing, I want to congratulate you,
- 4:40Speaker 2: because for some people that's hard to recognize. But when
- 4:44Speaker 2: you notice that your heart isn't open, then that is
- 4:47Speaker 2: something to on the one hand, celebrate because you're aware
- 4:52Speaker 2: and you're noticing something about yourself that's really important. So
- 4:58Speaker 2: the work of come Back to Love is about he
- 5:01Speaker 2: healing the past, healing the heartbreaks, learning how to stop
- 5:08Speaker 2: repeating patterns and really create what you want in your life.
- 5:14Speaker 2: Create something new, create yourself a new become somebody who
- 5:21Speaker 2: has moved beyond and is ready for again. Love in
- 5:28Speaker 2: the way that you define it, because for me, the
- 5:31Speaker 2: work is about coming back to love with yourself and
- 5:35Speaker 2: looking at that on all the levels emotional, mental, spiritual, embodied.
- 5:42Speaker 2: But you get to then define what you want to
- 5:44Speaker 2: do with that love. Whether you want to be in
- 5:45Speaker 2: relationship or you don't want to be in relationship, that's
- 5:48Speaker 2: up to you. So I'm tuning in right now from
- 5:53Speaker 2: hot and humid Boston, Massachusetts. I'm curious how it is
- 5:58Speaker 2: where you are when you're listening to them. Yes, please
- 6:00Speaker 2: feel free to shoot me an email anytime, Robin rob
- 6:04Speaker 2: y N at comebacktolove dot com. Let me know how
- 6:07Speaker 2: you're doing, let me know how you're enjoying the show.
- 6:10Speaker 2: Please suggest topics that you would like me to address.
- 6:12Speaker 2: I have a long list after twenty five years of
- 6:15Speaker 2: doing this work, and still I am open, of course
- 6:19Speaker 2: to hearing what topics you would like me to address
- 6:22Speaker 2: on this radio show. So please do feel free to
- 6:27Speaker 2: be in touch anytime and you can always find me
- 6:30Speaker 2: at comeback toolove dot com. Okay, so onto the topic
- 6:35Speaker 2: of beyond divorce. I want to take a moment to
- 6:38Speaker 2: invite you to begin noticing something when you think about
- 6:43Speaker 2: what you've been through again, whether it's divorce, separation, the
- 6:48Speaker 2: unraveling of a life that you built. What words come up?
- 6:53Speaker 2: How do you refer to your own experience when you
- 6:56Speaker 2: talk to friends, when you talk to perhaps a therapist,
- 7:01Speaker 2: or when you're talking to yourself at two in the morning.
- 7:05Speaker 2: I'm guessing you say my divorce, my failed marriage, my heartbreak.
- 7:12Speaker 2: I did too, before I understood what that language was
- 7:16Speaker 2: quietly doing to me. I said that exact thing. And
- 7:23Speaker 2: what we know is that when you say, you're identifying
- 7:32Speaker 2: with exactly your experience with the crisis, with the trauma,
- 7:36Speaker 2: with the heartbreak, and it stays in the body and
- 7:40Speaker 2: it creates your life. We're going to go into this
- 7:43Speaker 2: more deeply. So I want to name one thing about
- 7:49Speaker 2: what this time together is about. It's not about rushing
- 7:51Speaker 2: you out of grief or telling you to just move
- 7:54Speaker 2: on and stop saying the word my divorce. It's really
- 7:57Speaker 2: about something more subtle and more powerful than that. And
- 8:01Speaker 2: I know you're listening to me on the radio or
- 8:03Speaker 2: on podcast. If you have a moment to pause what
- 8:07Speaker 2: you're doing, to take out your journal, take out a pen.
- 8:09Speaker 2: I really invite you to take some notes, but also
- 8:13Speaker 2: to follow along and do some journaling and do some
- 8:17Speaker 2: writing about this topic. It's really really important because language
- 8:22Speaker 2: creates identity, and identity creates reality. And if you're somebody
- 8:26Speaker 2: right now who's listening in who feels like I am
- 8:28Speaker 2: not living the life I want to be living. I
- 8:30Speaker 2: do not have the love in my life that I want,
- 8:33Speaker 2: I do not have the partner in my life that
- 8:35Speaker 2: I want, or I haven't even finished moving through this
- 8:38Speaker 2: divorce and it's driving me absolutely crazy. Keep listening. We
- 8:44Speaker 2: use the word my very carefully in life, my child,
- 8:47Speaker 2: my home, my body. When we say my, we are
- 8:50Speaker 2: claiming ownership. We are saying this is part of me.
- 8:55Speaker 2: When we say my divorce over and over, we are,
- 8:58Speaker 2: without realizing it, making the divorce part of who we are.
- 9:03Speaker 2: Ongoing now, we do, have, of course, an experience of
- 9:11Speaker 2: acute grief when there's been a loss, any kind of loss,
- 9:16Speaker 2: and then there's processing that hopefully we have time and
- 9:20Speaker 2: space to do. And then there's healing, which again hopefully
- 9:24Speaker 2: you've had time and space to do. But if not yet,
- 9:27Speaker 2: then just recognize where are you in the process. Are
- 9:29Speaker 2: you in acute grief, are you in initial processing, or
- 9:33Speaker 2: are you in healing, or the next phase, which is
- 9:36Speaker 2: the stuck place. We've got five phases here that just
- 9:40Speaker 2: want to name again, acute grief phase one, Phase two processing,
- 9:46Speaker 2: and the early sort of starting to realize what actually happened.
- 9:50Speaker 2: There can be a lot of shock and a lot
- 9:52Speaker 2: of like disillusionment, step three, Phase three, healing, Phase four,
- 9:59Speaker 2: the stuck place, Yes, phase five becoming. So most people
- 10:05Speaker 2: probably are somewhere between healing and the stuff place. You've
- 10:09Speaker 2: done a lot of real work, but still somehow things
- 10:13Speaker 2: aren't moving. You're still identifying divorce. It is part of
- 10:22Speaker 2: your perception. It's part of your identification. You see yourself
- 10:26Speaker 2: as someone who has failed at love, so you unconsciously
- 10:29Speaker 2: look for evidence that confirms it. It shapes your choices.
- 10:33Speaker 2: You stay smaller, You don't put yourself out there. You
- 10:36Speaker 2: protect yourself from another divorce or another loss, rather than
- 10:39Speaker 2: opening up to something new. It becomes your story with
- 10:43Speaker 2: new people that you meet. The divorce becomes chapter one
- 10:46Speaker 2: of how you introduce yourself, and it colors everything that follows.
- 10:50Speaker 2: So without judgment, just take a moment, tune into yourself
- 10:55Speaker 2: and ask yourself, where do you feel you are on
- 10:58Speaker 2: that spectrum right now? Phase are you in? What phase?
- 11:03Speaker 2: Are you in acute grief processing, healing, stuck or becoming
- 11:08Speaker 2: something new? That you'd have a breath with me, And
- 11:17Speaker 2: because you're just listening to me on the radio, you know,
- 11:20Speaker 2: you just get to do this privately. You know you're
- 11:23Speaker 2: welcome to share, obviously, you're welcome to share with me,
- 11:25Speaker 2: welcome to share with you know, your trusted people in
- 11:28Speaker 2: your life. But just acknowledge to yourself with some humbleness
- 11:32Speaker 2: and some honesty about where you are in your life,
- 11:37Speaker 2: and just let that be again without judgment. So healing
- 11:43Speaker 2: is very different than becoming, right, healing is so important,
- 11:47Speaker 2: It's obviously a big part of the work that I do,
- 11:50Speaker 2: but they're two very different journeys. Most people, in some
- 11:53Speaker 2: ways know how to heal. We talk a lot about
- 11:56Speaker 2: healing in our culture, especially in our in our our
- 12:00Speaker 2: Western culture, we speak about it in a very specific way.
- 12:02Speaker 2: We're very attached and connected with psychotherapy and other healing modalities.
- 12:08Speaker 2: But the concept of becoming is something different. Healing is necessary,
- 12:12Speaker 2: absolutely necessary. I want to be clear about that. Understanding
- 12:16Speaker 2: what happened, grieving what was lost, making sense of the past.
- 12:20Speaker 2: That work has to happen if you haven't done that yet,
- 12:23Speaker 2: I invite you to consider doing it and think about
- 12:26Speaker 2: how you want to do it. But healing is looking backward.
- 12:30Speaker 2: It's asking what happened to me? Why did it go wrong?
- 12:35Speaker 2: What was my part? What was theirs? Becoming is something different?
- 12:41Speaker 2: Becoming looks forward? It asks who am I now that
- 12:45Speaker 2: I have been through this? What do I actually want?
- 12:51Speaker 2: Not what I thought I wanted before, or what my
- 12:53Speaker 2: family told me I should want, or what the culture
- 12:56Speaker 2: tells me I should want, but what I want now
- 13:02Speaker 2: from this wiser, more honest place. And then you might
- 13:08Speaker 2: ask yourself what do I need to release in order
- 13:11Speaker 2: to step into that. I'm going to ask those questions
- 13:17Speaker 2: again so that you really get them. And also if
- 13:19Speaker 2: you're writing them down, you can write them down again
- 13:22Speaker 2: or like clarify what you've written down. Who am I
- 13:26Speaker 2: now that I've been through this? You can fill this
- 13:28Speaker 2: fill in the blank, right, Who am I now that
- 13:30Speaker 2: I've gotten through the divorce? Or who am I now
- 13:33Speaker 2: that I am used to being perhaps a widow or
- 13:37Speaker 2: a widower? Who am I now that I've reached the
- 13:40Speaker 2: age of sixty and I'm making a big transition in
- 13:43Speaker 2: my life? Or my career. What do I actually want again?
- 13:48Speaker 2: Not what I thought I wanted, but what do I
- 13:50Speaker 2: want now from this wiser, more honest, more open, more
- 13:53Speaker 2: mature place. What do I need to release in order
- 13:56Speaker 2: to step into that? You can be fully healed and
- 14:02Speaker 2: still not ready, and you can be not fully healed
- 14:07Speaker 2: and still be becoming. They're not really a sequence. They're
- 14:11Speaker 2: actually two different questions. So they are different phases. But
- 14:15Speaker 2: it doesn't have to be that one absolutely proceeds precedes
- 14:20Speaker 2: the next. Readiness isn't a feeling that arrives one day.
- 14:26Speaker 2: It's a choice you make, usually before you feel completely ready.
- 14:30Speaker 2: I hear this often with my clients and workshop participants.
- 14:33Speaker 2: I often will hear them say I'm ready, I'm getting ready,
- 14:36Speaker 2: I'm almost ready. It's like we want to say we're ready,
- 14:41Speaker 2: and we're not always completely ready, and that's okay, but
- 14:45Speaker 2: let's say it again. It's a choice you make, and
- 14:48Speaker 2: often it's usually just before you're completely ready, and that's
- 14:51Speaker 2: okay because saying the words actually helps you in the
- 14:54Speaker 2: becoming ready. It's the decision to stop organizing your life
- 14:58Speaker 2: around what happened in the past and start organizing it
- 15:02Speaker 2: around what's possible, what's possible now, what's possible in the future.
- 15:10Speaker 2: So what would it mean for you personally to feel ready?
- 15:15Speaker 2: Not like I'm healed and I feel all you know,
- 15:18Speaker 2: all healed and tucked in and no, Just what would
- 15:22Speaker 2: it mean to you personally to feel ready? What's the
- 15:27Speaker 2: difference in your body between these two words. Let's take
- 15:30Speaker 2: that piece so here, I invite you to have a
- 15:35Speaker 2: breath with me again, deep breath in the nose, exal
- 15:42Speaker 2: through the mouth, maybe a sound or a sigh like
- 15:44Speaker 2: I just did. And I want you to take a
- 15:49Speaker 2: moment to feel these words in your body. Feel the
- 15:57Speaker 2: word healing, and just notice where that lands in your body,
- 16:01Speaker 2: notice how it feels. And if you happen to have
- 16:05Speaker 2: a journal, just write that down. Feel the word ready,
- 16:13Speaker 2: or you might try I am ready for and fill
- 16:15Speaker 2: in the blank. I am ready to love myself more.
- 16:19Speaker 2: I am ready to allow myself to grieve. I am
- 16:27Speaker 2: ready for new love. Wherever you are in your journey,
- 16:33Speaker 2: it's exactly the place that you're supposed to be right now,
- 16:36Speaker 2: no right, no wrong, no good, no bad. I am becoming.
- 16:45Speaker 2: Feel the word becoming in your body. That has a
- 16:48Speaker 2: whole different energy to it, and if you're not in
- 16:52Speaker 2: the phase of becoming yet, just notice how it feels
- 16:56Speaker 2: light and know that you'll get there. And that's an
- 16:59Speaker 2: exciting thing to consider that's coming down the path for you. Okay,
- 17:10Speaker 2: So I want to do something practical right now, not
- 17:13Speaker 2: just talk about it, but actually begin to do this
- 17:18Speaker 2: shifting into becoming and readiness so that you have a feeling.
- 17:26Speaker 2: It's a really simple exercise, but don't let the simplicity
- 17:29Speaker 2: fool you. What we're going to do is interrupt a
- 17:33Speaker 2: pattern that may have been running for years, and that interruption,
- 17:38Speaker 2: even once, even briefly, right here, right now, creates a
- 17:42Speaker 2: new possibility for you. So I want to invite you
- 17:48Speaker 2: to think about a story in your mind, or if
- 17:54Speaker 2: you're writing, please do write down. I am someone who.
- 17:58Speaker 2: Fill in the blank. I am someone who, and if
- 18:01Speaker 2: you're just listening to me on the radio, whatever pops
- 18:04Speaker 2: into your mind, I am someone who. Maybe you're driving
- 18:06Speaker 2: your car and you're listening to the radio right now
- 18:09Speaker 2: and you're on km E T come back to Love
- 18:11Speaker 2: radio and you're like, I am someone who, and let
- 18:14Speaker 2: whatever comes up about the divorce or heartbreak, let it
- 18:17Speaker 2: come up. Don't edit, just notice what your identity currently
- 18:21Speaker 2: says about you in love, and let that be with
- 18:27Speaker 2: you for a moment. Let yourself be with the words
- 18:32Speaker 2: that come up again, without judgment, without filtering. And now, notice,
- 18:39Speaker 2: how does that sentence feel in your body? Where do
- 18:41Speaker 2: you feel it? Do you feel it in your heart?
- 18:43Speaker 2: Do you feel it in your belly? Do you feel
- 18:46Speaker 2: it in your shoulders? Does it feel heavy tight? Does
- 18:50Speaker 2: it feel familiar? That feeling is the identity that is
- 18:56Speaker 2: living inside you and creating your reality. Because your identity, remember,
- 19:01Speaker 2: creates your reality. Now, I want to invite you to
- 19:06Speaker 2: try something. I want to invite you to place one
- 19:10Speaker 2: hand on your heart if you can, in this moment,
- 19:15Speaker 2: take a breath and complete this sentence instead. I am
- 19:20Speaker 2: someone who is becoming. Fill in the blank again, not
- 19:26Speaker 2: who you were, not who you're healing from, not what
- 19:34Speaker 2: you're healing from, not how you're healing, just who you
- 19:39Speaker 2: are becoming. Let yourself reach for it, even if it
- 19:44Speaker 2: feels unfamiliar, actually, especially if it feels unfamiliar, I am
- 19:51Speaker 2: someone who is becoming. Now, notice what came up. For
- 20:01Speaker 2: some of you, It'll feel hopeful and helpful for some,
- 20:07Speaker 2: it might feel scary for some it might feel unbelievable,
- 20:15Speaker 2: like you're just making it up, and all of that
- 20:18Speaker 2: is completely normal. The discomfort that you're feeling is rewiring.
- 20:25Speaker 2: That's actually happening. Now. I want to take a pause
- 20:29Speaker 2: for a moment here just and go to the concept
- 20:32Speaker 2: of rewiring. There's a lot of talk about rewiring these days,
- 20:37Speaker 2: and for good reason. Rewiring, first of all, wiring, let's
- 20:42Speaker 2: start there, is about how your brain has been holding
- 20:47Speaker 2: and processing what's happened in your life over years and
- 20:54Speaker 2: as a result of, let's say a trauma that has
- 20:59Speaker 2: happened in your life. You make decisions about life, You
- 21:03Speaker 2: create behaviors, you create thoughts, and they get wired in
- 21:08Speaker 2: and they stick with you and sometimes we don't even
- 21:11Speaker 2: notice them. They just stick with you. They become your truth,
- 21:14Speaker 2: they become your reality. I don't have enough money. I'm
- 21:18Speaker 2: never going to have a partner, I'm not going to
- 21:19Speaker 2: have love like that. My job is just okay. I'm
- 21:23Speaker 2: not one who's going to have a really amazing job
- 21:25Speaker 2: and be you know, famous and make lots of money
- 21:28Speaker 2: or you know. We just sit with these limiting beliefs
- 21:32Speaker 2: and they're stuck. This process and the work that I
- 21:36Speaker 2: do and come back to love is deep, deep rewiring.
- 21:40Speaker 2: As I said, this is a simple exercise moving from
- 21:43Speaker 2: I am someone who to I am someone who is becoming.
- 21:48Speaker 2: It may seem really simple, but it's a deep rewiring
- 21:51Speaker 2: because if you put that on the chalkboard in your kitchen,
- 21:56Speaker 2: or on the bulletin board in your office, or on
- 21:58Speaker 2: a little sticky right next to you your computer at
- 22:00Speaker 2: your desk, or in your car, or on the mirror
- 22:03Speaker 2: where you brush your teeth, I am someone who is becoming.
- 22:06Speaker 2: Your body, your mind, your energy all reorganize around this
- 22:12Speaker 2: present and future experience of who you're becoming. So again,
- 22:17Speaker 2: notice what came up for you, notice what you feel
- 22:19Speaker 2: in your body, and make this declaration. Share it. Share
- 22:26Speaker 2: it in the ways that I just described. Share it
- 22:29Speaker 2: with your partner if you have one, Share it with
- 22:32Speaker 2: your friends, share it with your children. Most importantly, share
- 22:38Speaker 2: it with yourself. I am someone who is becoming. Topic
- 22:44Speaker 2: for today has been beyond divorce, and basically we've been
- 22:47Speaker 2: talking about how to let go of the identity of
- 22:50Speaker 2: divorce or other kinds of loss that we continue to
- 22:55Speaker 2: reference and live with until we stop, until we pop
- 23:00Speaker 2: and we say, you know, there's grief there's processing, there's healing,
- 23:06Speaker 2: all extremely important, and there's a place of stuckness that
- 23:12Speaker 2: can show up. And then there's becoming again. As I said,
- 23:17Speaker 2: not so linear, but all very important and distinct phases
- 23:21Speaker 2: to really understand the process that you are in, where
- 23:25Speaker 2: you're in, what phase you're in, and looking towards releasing
- 23:30Speaker 2: the identity with my divorce, my loss, my this, my that,
- 23:35Speaker 2: and again. I was doing that incessantly until I realized
- 23:39Speaker 2: that I was holding onto things that I absolutely did
- 23:42Speaker 2: not want to or need to hold onto, and couldn't
- 23:45Speaker 2: really move forward without letting them go and shifting. So
- 23:51Speaker 2: what you just did that small shift? I am someone
- 23:55Speaker 2: who I am someone who is becoming. That is an
- 23:58Speaker 2: entirely new journey. It might seem micro and small, but
- 24:03Speaker 2: it's big and the work that you're doing, and you
- 24:07Speaker 2: do it again and again in bigger and bigger ways
- 24:09Speaker 2: until the new story is more real to you than
- 24:13Speaker 2: the old one makes sense. I hope so, and if not,
- 24:19Speaker 2: just again, shoot me an email Robin rob y N
