Transcript
- 0:00my guest today is Angie Ang Angie is the
- 0:04vice president of measurement
- 0:06addressability and data center at the
- 0:09IAB she has over 30 years of work
- 0:13experience in digital media and has
- 0:14worked for many years at a number of
- 0:16different places including being an
- 0:18executive at ad
- 0:20agencies more recently she is the
- 0:22creator of Angie's career Gazette a
- 0:26newsletter and forum for job seekers in
- 0:29digital media
- 0:30and that will form the basis for much of
- 0:32our conversation today Angie it is so
- 0:35good to talk to you great to see you
- 0:38James and uh it's been a pleasure we've
- 0:40known each other for quite a long time
- 0:43back in the days of when we were on the
- 0:44adops council at IAB trying to
- 0:47standardize ad verification and
- 0:50viewability that that that feels like a
- 0:53really long time go it does it does
- 0:57those are great times too so we'll get
- 0:59into some of what's changed here in a
- 1:01minute because I I think it's important
- 1:03to talk about the evolution but but
- 1:05before we go there uh or maybe because
- 1:07of the evolution of the industry what
- 1:10prompted you to start Angie's career
- 1:12Gazette and how do you define success
- 1:15for The
- 1:16Gazette yeah so um I I've always had a a
- 1:22good network of people that I've been
- 1:24connected with on LinkedIn and in
- 1:282023 there were a lot of layoffs in our
- 1:30industry and um and a lot of people
- 1:35reached out to me asking me if I you
- 1:39know if I knew anything especially given
- 1:40my role at IAB where I have a good
- 1:43perview of what's happening in the
- 1:44marketplace and due to you know to the
- 1:47fact that I I have a fairly large uh
- 1:51connection networking poll and so I had
- 1:56done a lot of one-on-one interviews
- 1:58giving people advice and all that stuff
- 2:01and then I also had a friend Mark
- 2:02Goldberg who some of you people might
- 2:05know uh who started uh a Pay It Forward
- 2:09uh trend on LinkedIn where he saw a
- 2:13bunch of job postings he started to
- 2:15share those out and I started doing the
- 2:17same and as I was doing that in talking
- 2:20to some of my friends who were uh who
- 2:24were looking who had been laid off uh I
- 2:27noticed that I was giving them the same
- 2:29advice over over and over and over again
- 2:31so I felt it was important to maybe
- 2:34perhaps rather than try and do this
- 2:36individually that maybe to share some of
- 2:39my point of views as well as a lot of
- 2:41these job openings in one one space so
- 2:45that's that's how Angie's career because
- 2:47that kind of came into fruition it it
- 2:50started off as regular LinkedIn posts uh
- 2:54but there's a limitation on character
- 2:55limits for a LinkedIn post and I was
- 2:58posting any where between 50 to 60 Jo
- 3:04listings and so uh the uh I found this
- 3:08great feature on LinkedIn called
- 3:09LinkedIn newsletters that gives me the
- 3:12creativity and flexibility to make the
- 3:15content as long as I want uh and to
- 3:19share different types of content between
- 3:21videos that I see um some of the work
- 3:25that we do at IAB and then um uh
- 3:30allowing me to share my point of view on
- 3:32on different things so there's a there's
- 3:34a section in every newsletter that you
- 3:36see I start off with what we call
- 3:38Angie's thoughts and that can be
- 3:40anywhere from my perspective of giving
- 3:42career advice or anything that's
- 3:45happening in the industry that I think
- 3:46that is important for for people to to
- 3:50understand and learn about perfect thank
- 3:53you so one of the reasons I had reached
- 3:56out to you originally was I had seen I
- 3:58mean you and I had been talking much of
- 4:002023 but at the end of 2023 you posted
- 4:03sort of a look back on some of the key
- 4:05trends and some of the key challenges if
- 4:08you could just summarize what do you see
- 4:09as the biggest challenges that job
- 4:12Seekers faced in 2023 that will probably
- 4:15continue into
- 4:172024 yeah I mean our industry alone uh
- 4:21due to privacy
- 4:23regulations um the roll out of the
- 4:26deprecation of first party uh C uh third
- 4:28party cookies from uh from the Google
- 4:31Chrome team with privacy sandbox the
- 4:34changes from the constant changes that
- 4:36we see from Apple iOS uh in terms of uh
- 4:40user privacy and data
- 4:42protection a lot of that has started
- 4:44impacting our industry where um
- 4:48companies aren't generating the the
- 4:50right same amount of Revenue they might
- 4:52have over hired in
- 4:552022
- 4:562021 and so we've seen a the Marketplace
- 5:00kind of start right sizing themselves
- 5:03but at the same time with all
- 5:07these issues with generating Revenue
- 5:10we've seen a lot of layoffs so uh the
- 5:13impact has been privacy regulations the
- 5:15changes from privacy uh the upcoming
- 5:17changes from privacy sandbox um the
- 5:20shift
- 5:21towards uh
- 5:23CTV um and less and and concerns around
- 5:28um a audience targeting and measurement
- 5:32has really kind of created some
- 5:33fluctuation in our Marketplace I think
- 5:36that's going to continue into 2024 as
- 5:39well as into
- 5:412025 and it's really important for
- 5:43people
- 5:45to kind of not live in what I what I
- 5:49consider a bubble right so if you've
- 5:51been at your job for a while or you you
- 5:54you know you you've been doing the same
- 5:57type of job or work work on a a certain
- 6:00type of role like social media
- 6:02programmatic it's really important to
- 6:04now expand your knowledge base to think
- 6:08about privacy regulations technical
- 6:11changes uh and the much bigger picture
- 6:14of what's affecting our industry so
- 6:17learn to upscale uplevel your knowledge
- 6:21base around all things outside of your
- 6:23day-to-day role and responsibility and
- 6:26really start evaluating what's happening
- 6:28uh across the industry and figuring out
- 6:31how that is going to affect your job
- 6:33role uh your organization and what are
- 6:37the things that you need to do to
- 6:38prepare and and uh develop solutions for
- 6:42so so let's drill into a couple of
- 6:45potential things they're in that
- 6:46category of you know major changes to
- 6:48the industry which could be viewed as
- 6:50threats or challenges but also
- 6:52opportunities you've mentioned one of
- 6:54them in privacy because privacy has the
- 6:57potential to create get some constraints
- 7:00on publisher revenue and how advertisers
- 7:03and agencies can operate but potentially
- 7:05it also creates opportunity for those
- 7:07who are experts in in privacy regulation
- 7:10a similar category might be the the rise
- 7:13of of AI where a lot of people are
- 7:16concerned about how it may impact their
- 7:18jobs by taking away or or moving some of
- 7:21the work but it also creates
- 7:23opportunities for those who are actually
- 7:25familiar with how it can be leveraged
- 7:26and impact and potentially even startup
- 7:30so where do you see the opportunity if
- 7:32you're talking about people expanding
- 7:35their skills or moving into new areas is
- 7:37you know you mentioned privacy is
- 7:40a about or and what are the other areas
- 7:43where there's potentially being
- 7:45disruption that people should be
- 7:46thinking about
- 7:48reskilling I think it's it's I think all
- 7:50of these things that are changing and
- 7:52impacting our industry are great
- 7:56opportunities for growth for every
- 7:58single person within our industry indry
- 8:00the more you Embrace these more you
- 8:02Embrace and understand these changes and
- 8:05really think strategically how this can
- 8:07impact certain types of roles certain Ty
- 8:10um an organization the more you become
- 8:13an expert or knowledgeable about these
- 8:15things the the the you can provide
- 8:19better
- 8:20recommendations you can rethink and and
- 8:23come up with some really innovative
- 8:25ideas uh network with various different
- 8:28organiz ations and different solution
- 8:31providers and understand what are the
- 8:33potential capability of those as you
- 8:37know so I would take those things that
- 8:39are frustrating the industry right now
- 8:43right become experts in them or become
- 8:46at least you know knowledgeable about
- 8:48them and and incorporate it into your
- 8:52everyday job right your everyday uh
- 8:55tasks
- 8:58because what what's happening is if if
- 9:00you don't and you keep doing what you're
- 9:03doing dayto
- 9:05day you're not going to understand why
- 9:08things why you can't compare benchmarks
- 9:11year-over-year and so what does that
- 9:13mean why are you seeing a drop in
- 9:16conversions on the back end well it
- 9:18could be because of some of the
- 9:20technical restrictions that we're seeing
- 9:22coming from Apple and from Google and so
- 9:25if you better understand that then you
- 9:27can be more creative on well how am I
- 9:29going to find solutions to help me fill
- 9:31in that that information fill in that
- 9:34Gap is it the use of AI is it the use of
- 9:37data modeling do I need to become a
- 9:39little bit more uh analytically Savvy do
- 9:43I need to you know up my skills in SQL
- 9:48in r or you know in in um um in in pivot
- 9:55tables even right
- 9:57so you get to start learning and and the
- 10:00more of the people that
- 10:03actually move towards that kind of
- 10:06mentality are are probably the ones that
- 10:09people are wanting to seek um uh to fill
- 10:13in uh a role within their organization
- 10:16they need people to think differently
- 10:18they need people to come up with
- 10:20different Sol so they're looking for
- 10:23proactive Executives proactive managers
- 10:26to help develop you know a a different
- 10:30approach to because a lot of the stuff
- 10:32that we were doing today isn't going to
- 10:34be around next year so I think it's
- 10:39important so staying on that same theme
- 10:41because you you've just been talking
- 10:43about how people need to expand and
- 10:45change their skill set while they're in
- 10:46a job I was going to ask you a question
- 10:49of what are your sort of top two or
- 10:51three pieces of advice for people in the
- 10:53industry in 2024 as they think about
- 10:57getting a new job whether it's expanding
- 10:59in their Network or what are the sort of
- 11:00things they should do um however you
- 11:03want to answer that and maybe the answer
- 11:04is the same if you're already in a job
- 11:07and thinking about you your job may be
- 11:09in Jeopardy what are the types of things
- 11:11that you should focus on however you
- 11:13want to approach that question yeah so
- 11:15regardless if you're looking for a job
- 11:17right now or you're currently in a role
- 11:22that you're happy with I think it's
- 11:23always good to prepare for the just in
- 11:27case right so um and that
- 11:30is networking is a is I think an
- 11:33important aspect of our industry being
- 11:36able to make connections and um and
- 11:40learn from others uh every day I go on
- 11:43LinkedIn every day I look to see what is
- 11:47trending I read the different Trad is
- 11:49trade uh articles out there I love
- 11:53hearing different perspectives uh and
- 11:55different and learn learn different
- 11:58skill sets from some of these from from
- 12:00some of these uh posts that I see on my
- 12:04network uh many there there's several
- 12:07webinars out there right they're all
- 12:10free um in fact I host a bunch of
- 12:13webinars um ones that are called like
- 12:16the state of data where we touch on a
- 12:18lot of these different things to help
- 12:20ensure that people are informed I think
- 12:23it's important to um there's this
- 12:25feature on LinkedIn called follow and
- 12:28con or
- 12:29connect um so if you're not comfortable
- 12:32always you know a lot of people want to
- 12:35keep their connections to people that
- 12:38they know which is which is great which
- 12:40is fine right but I do think that if you
- 12:44have been in this industry for a long
- 12:47time you should have in my
- 12:49opinion almost at least
- 12:52500 connections for every year that
- 12:54you've worked in this
- 12:57industry right so
- 12:59I've been in this for 30 years it would
- 13:02be great to have 15,000 connections
- 13:04which I do
- 13:07so um and and uh but not only do I do
- 13:10that but um there are some people where
- 13:13hey maybe a connection I I might not
- 13:16want to connect with them but I follow
- 13:17them and when I follow them and I see
- 13:20their post I respond to their post right
- 13:23I like it I make a comment and so those
- 13:27people who I'm following they may
- 13:30reciprocate uh and follow me and so
- 13:33therefore now I've expanded my
- 13:36community um but being very active
- 13:39within your network is really important
- 13:41and that helps you not only prepare for
- 13:44your job in the future but it also helps
- 13:47with your job search right now right so
- 13:50um I've found I've been able to connect
- 13:53several people uh to that don't know
- 13:57each other through this philosophy of
- 14:01like like I had a friend say hey do you
- 14:03know so and so forth from this company
- 14:07they just have a they I just saw a job
- 14:09listing now I might not know that person
- 14:11very intimately but because I'm very
- 14:14active on
- 14:15LinkedIn um I'm sure they've seen my
- 14:18post a lot so when I make connections
- 14:20I'll be like sure I'll even though I
- 14:22don't know I'll make the connection and
- 14:23there are tons of people out there in
- 14:26this quote unquote pay it forward kind
- 14:29of movement who are doing the same and
- 14:32so um I highly recommend connect you
- 14:35know I I wrote an article about do you
- 14:37connect or do you follow so read that
- 14:40article from the from the Gazette and
- 14:42make a decision of of doing that but I
- 14:44think networking and creating a brand
- 14:47for yourself out there uh helps you
- 14:50prepare for any job role in the future
- 14:53and proves to your managers that you're
- 14:55on top of your game yeah I mean just
- 14:59building what you said about you know
- 15:01the Pay It Forward Community you know I
- 15:03left my last sort of corporate role just
- 15:05over a year ago and for a number of
- 15:07months was trying to work out what to do
- 15:08with my time and I reached out to
- 15:11hundreds of people and was just
- 15:13overwhelmed by how generous people were
- 15:16by answering questions about what they
- 15:18were doing how they thought about
- 15:21basically working in general and so I
- 15:23think anyone who's concerned about oh I
- 15:25don't want to impose too much on their
- 15:27time they'll tell you if they're too
- 15:28busy they may not make the time but 99%
- 15:31of the people that I reached out to made
- 15:34half an hour an hour for a conversation
- 15:37yeah I think it's it I think there's so
- 15:39many great people out there that are
- 15:41that they see what's going on in the
- 15:43marketplace and uh and and more than
- 15:47willing to help out their fellow
- 15:49colleagues um let me uh ask you a
- 15:52question about sort of the r what at
- 15:55least what I perceive is the rising use
- 15:58of different slack groups within the
- 16:01industry and again I don't it's hard for
- 16:04me to separate whether this is a new
- 16:05trend or whether it's just a trend I
- 16:07became aware of but there's been um
- 16:10certainly in the last sort of six months
- 16:12or Year adtech God started a slack
- 16:15channel for industry I think the uh was
- 16:18it Mark Goldberg who's done the the Mad
- 16:20Tech am I right in that one so what's
- 16:23your thoughts when you because you've
- 16:25been talking a lot about you know sort
- 16:27of the LinkedIn and how to use the
- 16:29newsletters the follow feature as a tool
- 16:33for establishing your brand how
- 16:35important do you think participation in
- 16:38those sort of slack online communities
- 16:40is oh those slack so there's also uh
- 16:44beertech has a Discord it's not on slack
- 16:47it's on Discord but beertech has a
- 16:49Discord I don't know why he doesn't have
- 16:51it on slack I'm gonna have to ask him
- 16:52that so Baylor why do you not have it on
- 16:54slack anyway
- 16:57um those are great forums for helping to
- 17:01answer
- 17:03questions um
- 17:07that you as an individual know that
- 17:12there're because they're I would say
- 17:14they're very cohort-based right so the
- 17:16people that are in those slack channels
- 17:18you have some sort of
- 17:19commonality um at Tech God there's a lot
- 17:22of questions especially For Engineers
- 17:25developers um people who are
- 17:29analytics um especially on the
- 17:31programmatic side where there's lots of
- 17:34questions about how do ad servers work
- 17:37uh issues with supply chain uh uh and uh
- 17:42how do people handle C troubleshoot
- 17:44certain issues so there there it creates
- 17:48some sort of community where you know
- 17:51that hey when I ask a question out there
- 17:53someone's going to
- 17:54respond um and you can have offline
- 17:59conversations whereas I think LinkedIn
- 18:01is more around thought
- 18:03leadership and sharing of events and and
- 18:06networking this is really a community
- 18:09where you get
- 18:11to feel very intimate with a bunch of
- 18:14friends and you can have back and forth
- 18:15conversations and it's hard to do a back
- 18:17and forth conversation in a in a in a
- 18:20post even though you can it's same
- 18:23functionality it's just it's a different
- 18:25vibe yep got it coming back to the
- 18:29growing parts of the industry because
- 18:31I'm I'm a big believer and if you're
- 18:33trying to find a job or or grow your
- 18:35career you want to tie your career in
- 18:38some sense to areas that that are
- 18:41growing and you know what's top of mind
- 18:44for you is it retail media networks is
- 18:47it CTV is it sort of the wall Gardens
- 18:51how do you think about if you're someone
- 18:53trying to redefine your career in in in
- 18:56digital media how do you think about the
- 18:58areas that are likely to grow for the
- 19:00next couple of years yeah so from the
- 19:03from
- 19:06the all all of those CTV is
- 19:10growing
- 19:13podcasting retail media networks or uh
- 19:16and I think retail media networks are
- 19:18going to evolve into Marketplace
- 19:19networks so think of uh where it's not
- 19:22just retailers that
- 19:25are leveraging their data for
- 19:28monetization to enable um to as as a
- 19:32sales to but you're going to also see
- 19:35other other verticals or categories cpg
- 19:39companies will likely get into this
- 19:41travel has already started I think they
- 19:44probably will be financial services at
- 19:47some point um I think the entertainment
- 19:51industry right so I think I have a
- 19:55feeling like the NBC's The Disney Plus
- 19:58is going to leverage their subscription
- 20:00base and not only leverage it to Target
- 20:03people within this their streaming
- 20:04platforms but lightly also create some
- 20:06sort of marketplace for them so that
- 20:08they can Target those in individuals
- 20:11outside of their o o based on some of
- 20:15the shows that people watch and create
- 20:17cohorts around them right um yep so I do
- 20:21think that that that Marketplace
- 20:23networks are going to be a thing um as
- 20:26well as contextual targeting
- 20:28so if you're if you're interested in
- 20:30contextual AI um both from a generative
- 20:34a a creative standpoint creative and
- 20:36content uh tools and platforms that
- 20:39are uh that we're seeing several new
- 20:41tools come into the marketplace but I
- 20:44also see um the use of AI in measurement
- 20:49and
- 20:50attribution um and I think a lot of the
- 20:52companies like data clean rooms cdps
- 20:56cmps any company that Leverage is a lot
- 20:58of data um for analytics and insights
- 21:02they're going to really grow pretty
- 21:05pretty aggressively in 2024 got it um
- 21:10let's talk a little bit about the
- 21:11emotional side of doing uh a job search
- 21:15because it's very easy for you and I to
- 21:16sit back here and analytically say here
- 21:19are the things you do get on you know
- 21:21LinkedIn grow your brand be in slack be
- 21:23part of one of these growing areas in
- 21:25the industry but for a lot of people who
- 21:27have been in a stable job for a long
- 21:29time maybe they're blindsided by being
- 21:31laid off or for whatever other reason
- 21:33they're finding that they're having to
- 21:35do a complete shift in their career what
- 21:38advice do you have for them uh in terms
- 21:41of thinking about the tools or the
- 21:43emotional support network that they need
- 21:46to be able to basically execute against
- 21:49a good job
- 21:50search that's a really hard question I
- 21:53don't know if I'm I'm going to be able
- 21:54to answer that well but I will say that
- 21:58based on some of the conversations that
- 22:01I've had with people they feel very
- 22:04insecure right now if they haven't been
- 22:08building their brand and growing their
- 22:11Network that it's they have what is it
- 22:15called um um impostor
- 22:18syndrome yeah so right so a lot of a lot
- 22:21of people feel very deflated because
- 22:23they've been laid off um they they feel
- 22:26like they maybe you know they second
- 22:29guess their skill sets their knowledge
- 22:32and they're like why would someone want
- 22:33to connect and follow me why would
- 22:36someone accept uh a connection uh
- 22:40request if I send it to
- 22:42them my my advice is get over it get
- 22:46over
- 22:47it build build your brand get out there
- 22:52because I've been in that situation I've
- 22:55been in that situation many many times
- 22:57and
- 22:59I would say that leaning on your
- 23:03network is how many people get their
- 23:07jobs and the fact that you know if I
- 23:10call someone or reach out to someone and
- 23:14they knew me they're like you know what
- 23:15I know the work that you do I've seen
- 23:18you I've seen you at events I've heard
- 23:20what you said I know you know this
- 23:23person um I'm more than happy to
- 23:26introduce you to
- 23:28so and so forth or uh I think you should
- 23:33consider you know consider going to
- 23:36client side which which happened for me
- 23:38right so uh they said you would be a
- 23:40great fit for this client role like and
- 23:42I was like I don't have any skill sets
- 23:44in in on client side they're like yeah
- 23:47but you have this knowledge base and I
- 23:49think Morgan Stanley would benefit from
- 23:52having someone like you right so people
- 23:56can see
- 23:58don't I I think especially your previous
- 24:01managers they can see like
- 24:03what you're capable of doing based on
- 24:08their interaction or their perception of
- 24:10you and
- 24:13so try not to be I know it's hard to to
- 24:17to not be negative but you know pick
- 24:20yourself
- 24:23up you have a voice you have
- 24:26experience you know know things and and
- 24:29share those out so that people can
- 24:31actually see uh that you that you know
- 24:35your stuff and it's all about showing
- 24:37what you know and the more you show what
- 24:40you know the more people will have
- 24:42confidence that you know what you're
- 24:44talking about or that you perhaps could
- 24:47fill a role that might be Rel related to
- 24:50it so I wasn't an analytics person like
- 24:53I don't really have a data I'm not a
- 24:55data scientist right I I was an account
- 24:58executive I was a media buyer and I was
- 25:00an adops but I am very analytical and so
- 25:04people have seen that and so which is
- 25:07part of why I think I got this role here
- 25:09at IAB they saw that I have business
- 25:12requirements logistical skills I
- 25:14understand some of the technical stuff
- 25:16and so they were able to piece that
- 25:19perception of me together and so thank
- 25:21you uh Randall rothenberger and U
- 25:24Rothenberg and uh Dennis Binford hir me
- 25:28here at I at the
- 25:30time um just building on that my own
- 25:33personal experience you know because I
- 25:34already mentioned that last year I you
- 25:36know started reaching out to do a
- 25:38listening tour of 50 or 100 people and I
- 25:40found it really difficult at the start
- 25:42to reach out to people hadn't
- 25:43necessarily connected with in the last
- 25:4610 years and I'm be like oh you know
- 25:48they're going to be annoyed if I'm
- 25:49reaching out to them out of the blue it
- 25:51has been a fantastic process there have
- 25:53been people that I worked with 10 years
- 25:55ago lost contact work who I now either
- 25:59work with or see every week and the
- 26:02process once you get into okay I'm going
- 26:05to reconnect with my network can
- 26:07actually be a really energizing thing as
- 26:10I I don't want to downplay the fact that
- 26:12there is um some angst you need to get
- 26:15over to start that process but I would
- 26:18been blown away by how sort of enriching
- 26:21it's been to reestablish some some of
- 26:23those connections from from the last 10
- 26:25years yeah and I would say like don't be
- 26:27embarrassed that you were laid off or
- 26:29fired from a job right um I think a lot
- 26:34of people in our industry understand
- 26:37what's going on in the marketplace and
- 26:39they're not going to count it against
- 26:41you for if you were laid off or
- 26:45fired um this has been a fantastic
- 26:48conversation Angie let let's try to
- 26:50finish with some optimism what are you
- 26:53most optimistic about going into
- 26:562024
- 26:58I love the fact that our industry is
- 27:02Shifting towards a privacy by Design and
- 27:07that we have to be more creative and
- 27:09Innovative so we're g to and the and the
- 27:12the use of AI is just going to make it
- 27:15even more fun we're going to have lots
- 27:18of different tools at at our
- 27:20fingertips lots of different changes are
- 27:23going to happen in the
- 27:26marketplace you're going to have to be
- 27:29creative in the way that you think about
- 27:31your approaches to Operations Logistics
- 27:35strategy
- 27:36media and the advancements of you know
- 27:40with the with h fiber optics with uh
- 27:43cloud-based
- 27:45technology um iots right I think it's
- 27:49going to be a lot of fun I can't wait
- 27:51for AR and VR to be like to blow up
- 27:55right and and be able to like create
- 27:57experiences and bring brand experiences
- 28:00into those environment and have people
- 28:02really engage and interact so I think
- 28:04there's a lot of stuff like I talk we
- 28:06talked a lot about like some of the the
- 28:10uh challenges but I do think like we
- 28:12said earlier there are opportunities and
- 28:14there's going to be the next five years
- 28:16is going to be a fun roller coaster
