- 0:12Hello friends, it's shown here. It's Thursday, it's the 15th of
- 0:17February. And we have reached the last
- 0:21chapter of this book of First Samuel.
- 0:24And here we are at the end of this little part of our journey.
- 0:26And I am just once again reminded how grateful I am that
- 0:31you each day continue to choose to take a moment out of your
- 0:36day, to open up God's Word with me and go on this journey of
- 0:41hearing more about what our God has to share with us in His
- 0:44living word. Thank you, friends.
- 0:48You really are a blessing to me. And I am so delighted that I can
- 0:52play a small part in your days as we go about this lives of
- 0:57ours. And today's a particularly
- 1:00interesting day because, well, today we're going to read about
- 1:03the death of Saul and life and death in the Bible is just
- 1:07presented in such a matter of fact way so often where the the
- 1:12scope of the narrative of the Bible is so much bigger than
- 1:15each individual life that is included in it.
- 1:18And it reminds me that my life too is but a small thing.
- 1:22And we need to make each day count.
- 1:25And each day that I'm able to share this journey with you is a
- 1:29good day in my books. So thank you.
- 1:31Thank you for being here with me today as we continue this
- 1:35journey together. So let's do just that.
- 1:38Let us continue this journey. Let us wrap up this book of
- 1:41First Samuel as we read together.
- 1:43Chapter 31 Now the Philistines attacked
- 1:56Israel and the men of Israel fled before them.
- 2:01Many were slaughtered on the slopes of Mount Gilboa.
- 2:05The Philistines closed in on Saul and his sons, and they
- 2:09killed three of his sounds, Jonathan Abinadab and Mel Kisha.
- 2:17The fighting grew very fierce around Saul, and the Philistine
- 2:21Archers caught up with him and wounded him severely.
- 2:25Soul groaned to his armour bearer.
- 2:28Take your sword and kill me before these Pagan Philistines
- 2:33come to run me through and Taunton torture me.
- 2:37But his armour bearer was afraid and would not do it.
- 2:41So Saul took his own sword and fell on it.
- 2:46When his armour bearer realised that Saul was dead, he fell on
- 2:50his own sword and died beside the king.
- 2:54O Saul, his three sons, his armour bearer, and his troops
- 3:00all died together that same day. When the Israelites on the other
- 3:06side of the Jezreel Valley and beyond the Jordan saw that the
- 3:09Israelite army had fled and that Saul and his sons were dead,
- 3:14they abandoned their towns and fled.
- 3:17So the Philistines moved in and occupied their towns.
- 3:21The next day, when the Philistines went out to strip
- 3:24the dead, they found the bodies of Saul and his three sons on
- 3:29Mount Gilboa. So they cut off Saw's head and
- 3:33stripped off his armour. Then they proclaim the good news
- 3:37of Saul's death in their Pagan temple, and to the people
- 3:41throughout the land of Philistia.
- 3:43They placed his armour in the temple of the Ashtoreth.
- 3:47Had they fastened his body to the wall of the city of
- 3:50Bethshan? But when the people of Jabesh
- 3:54Gilead heard what the Philistines had done to Saul,
- 3:57all their mighty warriors travelled through the night to
- 4:01Bethshan and took the bodies of Saul and his sons down from the
- 4:05wall. They brought them to Jabish,
- 4:09where they burned the bodies. Then they took their bones and
- 4:13buried them beneath the tamarisk tree at Jabesh, and they fasted
- 4:18for seven days. Load After everything that Saul
- 4:31had done, it's so easy for us to write him off.
- 4:36But here we read of the tenderness and the loyalty that
- 4:40you inspire your people to have to their king and his sons.
- 4:46Lord, soften our hearts so that we too can, instead of writing
- 4:52people off, can hold true with tenderness and kindness to them
- 4:59that we can be your presence. When everyone else is writing
- 5:02someone off because of something they've done or something, they
- 5:05continue to do that. You shape our heart to be like
- 5:09yours, our God of second chances and third chances and fourth
- 5:14chances and so on. That's the only reason that we
- 5:17are still able to be your disciples is because you give us
- 5:20so many chances. So help us to be more like the
- 5:25father of the prodigal son who throws his arms wide open and
- 5:29welcomes again and again and again, rather than that heart
- 5:34hardened older brother who's just so embittered by the
- 5:40injustices that he sees. We offer ourselves to you as a
- 5:46living sacrifice to be used and shaped as your beloved agents in
- 5:52the world. We love you and we praise you
- 5:57and we pray all of these things in your name, Jesus.
- 6:00Amen.
