Latest / Lisa & Russell / Jasper Harvey: Reindeer. Beautiful Animals But I Would Have Been Eating Them
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Season four of A Lone Australia has moved to quite
- 0:04Speaker 1: frankly a more challenging befitting of the show setting than Tasmania.
- 0:08Speaker 1: They're in the Arctic Circle and Jasper Harvey, who already
- 0:12Speaker 1: lives off grid in a modified bus, is representing w
- 0:15Speaker 1: A good morning, Jasper, morning, Jasper.
- 0:17Speaker 2: Good morning, thank you for having me, thank.
- 0:19Speaker 1: You for joining us. Now was camping on the very
- 0:24Speaker 1: edge of the Arctic Circle? Ever really on your BINGO card?
- 0:27Speaker 2: Well travel wise, my like two plans and I ticked
- 0:32Speaker 2: one of them off. Now is visiting the Tiger so
- 0:34Speaker 2: that the boreal forest on the top of the world,
- 0:36Speaker 2: which Finland has that, So the Tiger, yeah, and the
- 0:40Speaker 2: Amazon so it was actually on the to do list.
- 0:42Speaker 3: Oh good, that's one of them off. That's one of
- 0:44Speaker 3: them ticked off. So now, Jasper, you're a permaculture practitioner.
- 0:50Speaker 3: For those who don't know, explained briefly what that is.
- 0:53Speaker 2: It's just a kind of like holistically living in a
- 0:56Speaker 2: way that is healthy for the planet and your community
- 1:00Speaker 2: as best you can. Basically so has social parts to it,
- 1:04Speaker 2: a heavy emphasis on like animal and animal systems and
- 1:08Speaker 2: gardening and being hyper local as well. So trying to
- 1:14Speaker 2: and trade within your community as much as you can.
- 1:17Speaker 3: So that kind of living minimally certainly would be an
- 1:20Speaker 3: advantage for a loan.
- 1:22Speaker 2: Massively, really really good skill set, super applicable.
- 1:27Speaker 1: What was I was so jealous? Pretty much. One of
- 1:30Speaker 1: the first things that happened to you was an encounter
- 1:32Speaker 1: with reindeer and the baby reindeer. Were you just thinking,
- 1:37Speaker 1: what is happening here? This is amazing?
- 1:41Speaker 2: It was just a state of like awe and wonder. Yeah,
- 1:45Speaker 2: it was just such beautiful, peaceful animals and yeah, it's
- 1:51Speaker 2: actually like a feeling of Christmas.
- 1:53Speaker 1: Ye seen him on a Christmas card, you know, and
- 1:55Speaker 1: there's this little white one who's so cute. Yeah, you've
- 2:00Speaker 1: got great shots. And the thing is that, I'm sure
- 2:03Speaker 1: you anyone that watches the show realizes, but you have
- 2:05Speaker 1: to lug around a heap of recording equipment and do
- 2:09Speaker 1: a crash course to become a cinematographer before you go
- 2:11Speaker 1: in that that's got to be a lot.
- 2:14Speaker 2: It's a lot, and I think that's something that people
- 2:16Speaker 2: don't quite get about the shows. It's actually a bit
- 2:19Speaker 2: harder than survival because you're filming. Yes, there's all these
- 2:25Speaker 2: rules that you can't break as well, if it's a
- 2:28Speaker 2: shipwreck situation, you don't do or do whatever you like,
- 2:30Speaker 2: you know, get where you can redier beautiful animals, but
- 2:34Speaker 2: I would have been eaten. There's there's a lot of
- 2:38Speaker 2: rules and the filming part as well there very very
- 2:43Speaker 2: challenging the scenery.
- 2:46Speaker 1: I'm actually always amazed at how good you all are
- 2:48Speaker 1: at knowing one thing from another when you are foraging, like,
- 2:51Speaker 1: oh this this one, I can eat this one, stay away.
- 2:55Speaker 2: Yeah, I think well the permaculture helped a lot with that,
- 2:58Speaker 2: and I did a lot study before going out and
- 3:01Speaker 2: compared to Australia, like we live in an incredible biodiversity
- 3:06Speaker 2: in especially in Western Australia, in the Southwest region I
- 3:10Speaker 2: live is biodiversity hotspot. It's incredible. And Finland's there's not
- 3:15Speaker 2: many species. It's actually quite a lot simpler. Many in
- 3:20Speaker 2: the understory are on the two species of tree on
- 3:22Speaker 2: my land. Oh wow, except more ones. So I could
- 3:26Speaker 2: learn a lot and get really prepared.
- 3:29Speaker 3: Right, you're the youngest competitor this year, one of three
- 3:33Speaker 3: West Aussies, by the way, So did you find being
- 3:37Speaker 3: the youngest an advantage or a disadvantage? You know when
- 3:41Speaker 3: it comes to experience and decision making.
- 3:44Speaker 2: Yeah, I think for me it wasn't like a big
- 3:48Speaker 2: factor or didn't come into my mind very often. I
- 3:51Speaker 2: think what's most important is did I feel ready? And
- 3:54Speaker 2: I felt ready going out there, like I had the
- 3:56Speaker 2: skills to give it a really good crack. You know,
- 4:01Speaker 2: there's a little bit to go with, like weighing up
- 4:05Speaker 2: if I was thirty, I would be have more experience
- 4:07Speaker 2: at that point or forty. And you have a slow
- 4:11Speaker 2: metabolism when you're older as well, which is quite significant.
- 4:19Speaker 3: Talking to a couple of practitioners, it slower metabolism right here. Yeah.
- 4:26Speaker 1: Is there ever a moment where you know you're going
- 4:29Speaker 1: to see you sort of maybe think, oh my god,
- 4:32Speaker 1: I've made a huge mistake coming here.
- 4:33Speaker 3: Yeah, to borrow from another show, Was there ever a
- 4:35Speaker 3: moment you said get me out of here? Well, that's yeah.
- 4:40Speaker 2: I had a pretty good mindset of I really went
- 4:45Speaker 2: in there with I've got this opportunity in front of me.
- 4:48Speaker 2: I want to I want to get as much out
- 4:49Speaker 2: of as I possibly can. And I really went in there.
- 4:52Speaker 2: I'm going to test myself. I'm going to see how
- 4:53Speaker 2: far I can go. So that was quite a helpful
- 4:58Speaker 2: mindset for because if you start, if you start getting
- 5:00Speaker 2: that grass as greener mindset, it just it's that's that's
- 5:05Speaker 2: really going to ruin your day sort of thing. So
- 5:07Speaker 2: you've got to stay away from that.
- 5:09Speaker 1: I think the thing that I was sort of most
- 5:13Speaker 1: I mean, I love Tasmania and everything, but the thing
- 5:16Speaker 1: that I was so disappointed about the first couple of
- 5:18Speaker 1: a load Australia's was the most you know, sort of
- 5:21Speaker 1: dangerous animal they were going to come in contact with,
- 5:24Speaker 1: was a paddy melon or whatever. For the mole wallabie thing. Now,
- 5:28Speaker 1: what have we got in the Arctic circle that you
- 5:30Speaker 1: could come up against their bears?
- 5:33Speaker 2: Brown bears? Yes, yes, yeah, okay to me, it was
- 5:39Speaker 2: actually very exciting. I'm sure getting to see any of
- 5:44Speaker 2: those animals is just an amazing opportunity. Yeah, actually dangerous, yes, yeah,
- 5:54Speaker 2: real cranky.
- 5:55Speaker 3: Yes absolutely when you were up there. Now, you're a
- 5:59Speaker 3: man who permaculture and you you you you sort of
- 6:02Speaker 3: live more simply than probably the two people sitting here.
- 6:07Speaker 3: Was there anything that you absolutely craved that you went,
- 6:11Speaker 3: I can't wait until I get out of here and
- 6:13Speaker 3: I get back to this.
- 6:15Speaker 2: But I don't know why. It was the food it.
- 6:19Speaker 2: Burgers did as well, but sausages, sausages, service stations. I
- 6:26Speaker 2: just had like dreams of burgers and sausages and just cheap,
- 6:32Speaker 2: oily terrible meat. Just the energetic density I gain. Yeah,
- 6:38Speaker 2: it was brutal. Actually, you have these dreams of you know, banquets,
- 6:42Speaker 2: and then you wake up to your shelter and your
- 6:45Speaker 2: berries and smoked mushrooms.
- 6:47Speaker 3: And cranky mood and mood.
- 6:50Speaker 1: Yeah, so in summary food, In summary, what was harder
- 6:56Speaker 1: the cold, the hunger, or the loneliness.
- 7:00Speaker 2: Yeah, it's a tricky question to answer that because it's
- 7:03Speaker 2: quite holistically challenging. Yeah, it's like, if you get sick,
- 7:08Speaker 2: you want more support, You want more friends and family
- 7:10Speaker 2: around when you're sick, you know, like someone to take
- 7:12Speaker 2: care of you. So you've got the physical struggles, but
- 7:16Speaker 2: that that plays on your mind and emotions as well,
- 7:18Speaker 2: and it all just it's just one big thing that's challenging.
- 7:21Speaker 1: You know.
- 7:22Speaker 2: I think the probably the physical stuff more than the
- 7:26Speaker 2: mental emotional stuff for me, because I'm quite comfortable by
- 7:29Speaker 2: myself and quite comfortable. Sure.
- 7:31Speaker 1: Yeah right, well, yeah it continues. We we look forward
- 7:36Speaker 1: to seeing where it goes. Thank you for joining us, Jasper.
- 7:40Speaker 2: It was a nice chatting to you.
- 7:41Speaker 3: Thanks thanks Jasper, thank you.
- 7:42Speaker 2: Bye.
