- 0:05Speaker 1: I'm Zach Power. Military officials say four soldiers were killed
- 0:09Speaker 1: during a training exercise at CFB Mainwright in Alberta on
- 0:13Speaker 1: Saturday as they were overtaken by violent, fast-moving flames fanned
- 0:18Speaker 1: by winds. 39 soldiers were sent to hospital, 19 of
- 0:23Speaker 1: whom are in critical condition as well. Information on the
- 0:26Speaker 1: tragedy is which Prime Minister Mark Carney called the most
- 0:29Speaker 1: serious incident affecting the Canadian Armed Forces on soil, that
- 0:33Speaker 1: was Canadian, on peacetime, was released by Major General Wade
- 0:37Speaker 1: Rutland on Sunday. Officials were aware of the fire beforehand,
- 0:41Speaker 1: but it was not considered to be a threat. That,
- 0:44Speaker 1: until a sudden windstorm blew the flames towards the soldiers
- 0:47Speaker 1: who were training in the area from all over Canada.
- 0:50Speaker 2: What I'll tell you is the fire was a kilometre
- 0:52Speaker 2: away when the wind shifted. It is not normal for
- 0:54Speaker 2: a fire to move fast. a kilometer in 30 to
- 0:57Speaker 2: 60 seconds. What I'll tell you now, though, is that
- 1:02Speaker 2: we've got the right team out there investigating.
- 1:04Speaker 1: It was a harrowing Saturday for the crew of a
- 1:07Speaker 1: fishing boat off the Avalon Peninsula when their vessel began
- 1:10Speaker 1: taking on water. They were rescued, but the FB High
- 1:13Speaker 1: Roller 3 ended up smashing against the rocks in Beta Vert.
- 1:18Speaker 1: The Coast Guard got the men off the boat before that.
- 1:21Speaker 1: No information as to what caused the vessel to begin
- 1:23Speaker 1: taking on water are presently available. The Conservative MP for
- 1:28Speaker 1: the Eastern Peninsula has written Premier Tony Wakeham asking him
- 1:31Speaker 1: to reconsider a decision not to hold a public referendum
- 1:35Speaker 1: on the Churchill Falls Agreement. Jonathan Rowe claims he wrote
- 1:38Speaker 1: the Premier as a concerned citizen in VOCM's Linda Swain.
- 1:42Speaker 3: Reports.
- 1:43Speaker 4: Rowe says Wakeham made a clear commitment to the people
- 1:45Speaker 4: of Newfoundland and Labrador that they would have the final
- 1:47Speaker 4: say through a referendum. Rowe says not only was that
- 1:50Speaker 4: commitment an election promise, but a cornerstone of the PC campaign.
- 1:55Speaker 4: In a letter to Wakeham that was posted to his
- 1:57Speaker 4: Facebook page, Roe says the Premier holds a position of
- 1:59Speaker 4: tremendous public trust, and with that comes an obligation to
- 2:03Speaker 4: demonstrate integrity, accountability and respect for the people who elected him.
- 2:07Speaker 4: Roe says he understands that circumstances can sometimes change, but
- 2:11Speaker 4: he says the question many want answered is, what changed?
- 2:15Speaker 4: He wonders whether the decision not to hold a referendum
- 2:17Speaker 4: was made entirely by Wakeham's government, or by outside influences, pressures,
- 2:22Speaker 4: and or demands. Linda Swain, VOCM, Local News Now.
- 2:27Speaker 1: The next step of twinning a stretch of the TCH
- 2:30Speaker 1: in central Newfoundland has kicked in. VOCM's Mahalia Artis.
- 2:34Speaker 3: Government will twin the highway between Grand Falls, Windsor and
- 2:37Speaker 3: Bishops Falls, but first it has to expropriate land on
- 2:40Speaker 3: the south side of the TCH. The Department of Transportation
- 2:43Speaker 3: and Infrastructure has retained a surveyor and has taken steps
- 2:46Speaker 3: to identify and notify affected property owners within the project area.
- 2:51Speaker 3: Notices will also be posted at various locations around the area.
- 2:55Speaker 3: Property owners who believe they may be affected and who
- 2:57Speaker 3: have not yet been contacted by the department can email ti.gov.nl.ca.
- 3:03Speaker 3: Government will use the same process for a similar expansion
- 3:06Speaker 3: west of Whitburn. Mahalia Artis, VOCM, Local News Now.
- 3:12Speaker 1: People in the tourism and hospitality sector are welcoming news
- 3:15Speaker 1: that the skies over Newfoundland and Labrador are opening up
- 3:18Speaker 1: to seasonal nonstop access to the United States. VOCM's Brian
- 3:22Speaker 1: Medour has that story.
- 3:23Speaker 5: United Airlines will fly daily between St. John's and Newark
- 3:27Speaker 5: from June to September beginning next year. The airline will
- 3:30Speaker 5: use a 76-seater in a trans-border agreement between it and
- 3:35Speaker 5: Air Canada. It has been more than a decade since
- 3:38Speaker 5: Newfoundland and Labrador had nonstop access to the New York
- 3:41Speaker 5: metropolitan region. Hospitality Newfoundland and Labrador says it's an important
- 3:46Speaker 5: step in creating new opportunities for tourism. Chair John Devereaux
- 3:51Speaker 5: says a direct connection to the New York region will
- 3:54Speaker 5: make our province easier to reach, open new opportunities to
- 3:57Speaker 5: attract visitors, and help tourism businesses compete and grow in
- 4:02Speaker 5: communities across the province. He says the potential benefits of
- 4:06Speaker 5: greater air access extend well beyond St. John's. Brian Medore, VOCM,
- 4:12Speaker 5: Local News Now.
- 4:14Speaker 1: The success of the Netflix series Below has resulted in
- 4:17Speaker 1: a lot of new eyes on rural parts of this province.
- 4:20Speaker 1: And to municipalities Newfoundland and Labrador, that underscores the need
- 4:23Speaker 1: to keep infrastructure up in those areas. Successful TV series
- 4:28Speaker 1: like Hudson and Rex, Son of a Critch, and Republic
- 4:31Speaker 1: of Doyle all have been used as St. John's for
- 4:34Speaker 1: their primary backdrop, but Below is pretty unique in the
- 4:38Speaker 1: sense that it uses the rural community of Snooks Arm.
- 4:41Speaker 1: MNL President Amy Coney says that the show highlights the
- 4:43Speaker 1: importance of rural areas to the province's culture and identity.
- 4:47Speaker 1: She uses cell phone connectivity as an example of something
- 4:50Speaker 1: that may need to be upgraded.
- 4:53Speaker 6: We really need to make sure that With the influx
- 4:57Speaker 6: of visitors coming into these areas because of these types
- 5:02Speaker 6: of shows, you know, there's going to be increased business
- 5:05Speaker 6: interest and businesses are going to want to expand and grow.
- 5:09Speaker 1: And that's your news. I'm Zach Power.
